• Sleeping on a Boat: The Ultimate Overnight Boating Guide
  • Sailing Hub
  • Sailing Tips

Have you ever been sleeping on a boat before? And we don't mean just a casual nap in the sun. When you charter a yacht for your holiday getaway, you can skip the overcrowded and overpriced hotels by spending the night aboard your very own home-at-sea.

Not sure if spending the night on a boat is really your style? When you book a private yacht charter, there are enough different choices to suit everyone's unique style of travel—from elegant, five-star accommodations to casual, do-it-yourself adventure.

Get ready for sleeping on a yacht rental overnight with our Ultimate Overnight Boating Guide:

Why sleep aboard?

How to sleep on a boat, what our overnight yacht rentals can offer you.

If it's your first time considering sleeping on a boat overnight, then you might be wary of getting started. We get it. But whether you're looking for a boat for camping or a boat for luxuriating between beach trips, the best overnight accommodations is your yacht. Here's why:

Get an early start to your day

If you're spending the night in a hotel, then setting sail early in the morning means you have to hit the ground running. You've got to wake up early enough to assemble your gear at the hotel and spend time physically getting to the docks—all before the rest of the crowds do.

But when you spend the night aboard your boat, you're ready to go from the moment you get out of bed. This spells less time wasted trying to get to your destination and more time on the open water enjoying your holiday.

Enjoy more amenities at a cheaper price

Sleeping on a boat overnight doesn’t just save you time—it also saves you money! After all, you're already chartering a boat for your holiday, so why add additional hotel (and travel) fees to the mix?

And while spending the night aboard your yacht is cheaper than staying in a hotel, it can actually be more luxurious. Why shell out the cash for a hotel room with a waterfront view when you can enjoy your own on-the-water view from your private yacht charter?

Settle in with all your luggage

With views that can't be beat and a nonexistent hotel bill, sleeping on a yacht rental overnight is one of the biggest insider tips from pro-travelers—and at the end of the day, it’s just more comfortable, too.

As you sail from one hot locale to the next, why would you want to keep unpacking and packing your bags at every different hotel you have to check into? When you decide to sleep on your yacht overnight, you can fully settle in for your holiday. This means you won't have to worry about forgetting anything in hotels, and you won't have to waste time going back and forth between hotels and your yacht. Instead, you can truly get comfortable and make your cabin your cozy home-away-from-home for your holiday.

Escape loud neighbors and street noise

Perhaps the number one reason for sleeping on a boat during your holiday is to skip out on the crowds, the loud neighbors, and the street noise.

When you charter your own yacht, you can truly enjoy a tranquil getaway, where the gentle sound of the waves can lull you to sleep at night—not your annoying neighbors in the hotel who won’t stop partying. For a relaxing holiday that's peaceful and calm, sleeping aboard your boat can't be beat.

Sold on spending the night sleeping on your yacht rental? Get ready for a good night's sleep with our boat camping tips:

Make sure you're well anchored

It might go without saying, but if you're going to be sleeping on a boat overnight, make sure that you're well anchored before you're ready to get under the covers, so you don't drift during the night. (No matter how adventurous you are, no one wants to wake up the next morning somewhere unknown out at sea!)

Don't forget extra layers

Even if you're sailing in a warm climate, like the Mediterranean or the Caribbean, it's a good idea to bring some extra layers with you. At night, your body temperature will naturally drop, which can make you feel cold while sleeping, so make sure you pack an extra sweater and socks to stay cozy at night.

If it's your first time sleeping on a boat, you may be feeling a little uneasy, as it's a new and unusual experience. Try to remember that sleeping on a boat is just like sleeping anywhere else. It also helps to maintain your normal pre-sleep routine (like having a cup of tea, reading, etc.), so your body knows it's time to get to sleep.

We also recommend bringing earplugs in case the splashing water or creakings from the boat distract you at night.

At Yacht4less, we know not everyone's idea of a dream holiday is the same, which is why we offer a host of different yachts for charter, so you can find the perfect match for your tip. Here's what some of our yacht rentals can offer you:

Fully-crewed yacht

Looking for five-star luxury? We deliver with a fully-crewed yacht .

This kind of charter comes staffed with a captain, hostess, and private chef. Imagine waking up after spending the night on your boat with a gourmet breakfast prepared to your liking by a private chef. No need to go to a restaurant—instead, enjoy your custom meal on the deck of your private boat with the view of the sunrise.

By the cabin

Want the feel of that five-star luxury with a smaller price tag? We have options. Charter a yacht by the cabin .

With a by-the-cabin yacht charter, you're booking a cabin aboard a yacht, much like booking a room in a hotel or on a cruise ship. You'll still enjoy a private room and bathroom, and you'll have free range of the common spaces, such as the kitchen, living room, and deck. This is also a great choice for those who like the more social atmosphere of a hotel.

Are you really looking for a boat for camping? It's time to go bareboat !

Bareboat is for those who want to be the captain of their own vessel, chartering a fully-equipped yacht to sail without the assistance of a skipper. If you're an experienced sailor, this is a great way to enjoy maximum freedom and privacy while you spend the night aboard a private yacht.

Need something a little more stripped down, but don't know how to sail? Choose a skippered yacht charter .

With a skippered yacht, you can enjoy sailing and sleeping aboard a boat stress-free with a private skipper who's at the helm to take care of the legwork. An added bonus is that you can stay at unique anchorages and bays that you wouldn't have access to on a bareboat, as they're only open to a crew with expertise.

Sleeping on a yacht rental overnight takes a sailing holiday to the next level.

Explore boat rental options in Miami

Want to charter a luxury yacht but don't know where to start? We've got you covered. There are a few areas to choose for your sailing experience: Miami Beach, Downtown Miami, Key Biscayne, Haulover Sandbar, and Coconut Grove.

The type of rentals available can vary from location to location, but you can expect anything from catamarans , sailboats , party boats and, of course, motor yacht charters . Use our advanced filters to find the vessel that best fits your style and expectations.

Miami Beach

For a taste of the lifestyle of the rich and famous, combined with early-20th-century Art Deco architecture, and effervescent nightlife, this iconic island city connected by bridges to the mainland is your go-to place. Miami Beach marina includes up to 400 berths and state-of-the-art amenities, from a heated swimming pool and laundry facilities to both casual and fine dining locations. The marina's close proximity to Miami's famous beaches make this location a must-do for any out-of-town visitor looking for a great time. If you decide to rent from Miami Beach, we recommend spending some time taking advantage of the dining and leisure in the area before or after your yacht rental. You won't regret it.

Downtown Miami

The Downtown Miami Marina is much smaller with only 130 slips, but don't let that stop you from checking out this location. This marina offers convenient access to all of the well-known yachting destinations around Miami and South Florida, including mainland Miami, Miami Beach, Virginia Key, Key Biscayne, and the Florida Keys. If you want to be in the center of everything, this is a great choice. If you plan to charter a luxury yacht here, you won't want to miss a sunset cruise. There's nothing quite like the evening views of the cityscape while relaxing at sea on a private cruise, with great company.

Coconut Grove

The southernmost location available for Miami boat rentals is Coconut Grove, the ideal spot for leisure and relaxation. Here, you'll have convenient access to the hustle and bustle of the downtown area and Miami Beach to the north and the island lifestyle of the Florida Keys to the south. If you want the home base of your boat rental in Miami to be more laid back and off-the-beaten-path, Coconut Grove is the location for you. If you have time, sail south to the Florida Keys and snorkel at the nearby coral reefs for a taste of paradise.

Weather in South Florida

Of course, you should keep in mind the weather when planning your experience on the water. Miami is the ideal location for a yacht charter while on vacation because of the incomparable weather. With winters ranging in the 70°s and summers in the 90°s, there's no wrong time to visit. But while the climate is typically mild and blissful, pay attention to the weather forecast leading up to your trip. If you're traveling to South Florida in the cooler months of the year, be sure to pack some layers to wear while on your sailing trip, especially if you plan to go sailing in the evening. If you're traveling during the summer months, remember to take extra precautions when it comes to sun care, and keep in mind the high chance of showers.

When planning to rent a boat in Miami, you should also pay attention to the wind patterns, which can vary from light and breezy in the summer to slightly stronger throughout the rest of the year. Dress accordingly if you plan to travel during those months. The wind shouldn't have much of an affect on your time on the water as long as you prepare yourself for what to expect while out on your charter.

Other popular Sailo destinations close to Miami

Don't forget: Miami isn't the only boating paradise available on Sailo! The yachting capital of the world is within a close vicinity of several other destinations with boat rentals and yacht charters available on Sailo. If you'd like to check out other areas while on vacation, we recommend visiting Fort Lauderdale or West Palm Beach , both of which are just a quick drive away. Testimonials

I have attended several events on the Yacht Justine. The plush furnishings and careful interior layout produce an atmosphere that is both elegant and intimate. Clean, comfortable, and spacious. A truly memorable way to experience the New York harbor.

Mike Mallner

We spent the first night of our honeymoon on Yacht Justine. It was the ten year anniversary of 9/11, and the tour around lower Manhattan was sobering and reflective, but also heart-stoppingly beautiful. It was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to celebrate our country and one of its greatest cities, and made the first day of our marriage magic and memorable. The accommodations were also very chic and comfortable, preparing us for the five-star resorts we had booked for the rest of our honeymoon. On top of spending the night in luxurious accommodations, we got a kick out of the novelty of knowing we were on a boat. All in all, it was a cherished experience, and one we would recommend to anyone looking for a truly special night.

Rachel Darwin , Communications Manager at Taft and Partners

Justine is beautiful, outside and in; and her crew is tremendous. I have been on many leisure trips on New York waterways on all types of boats from rustic sailboats to cruise ships, and can say that the aesthetic and ethos of one's immediate surroundings greatly impacts the experience. The elegant look of Justine, and the friendly unpretentious feel of her crew has been the number one factor in my enjoyment.

Sidney Oolongo , Events Coordinator

I had the great pleasure of coming aboard Yacht Justine for a cruise on NYE. Justine is a beautiful vessel and the staff was extremely accommodating and nice. I was very impressed by how attentive the staff was and all their efforts to make sure that I enjoyed my time aboard Justine. I will definitely book another cruise in the near future. If you are looking for a classy retreat from the city in the company of an incredible staff, this is where you want to be.

YACHT CHARTERS

Q What is different about your company?

Although everything that floats in New York City is marketed as a "luxury private yacht," Zenith actually owns and operates high-end, beautifully maintained yachts. Our photos, videos, and TV clips are accurate. For ten years, Zenith has served a global elite of CEOs, celebrities, and VIPs from the highest echelons of power. We are the top of the market. We encourage you to visit and see the yachts you are interested in yourselves, and compare. Please ask any local charter agent about our reputation.

Q Who will be on the yacht with us?

All cruises will have a minimum of three crewmembers aboard to assure your safe and enjoyable cruise. A Captain will helm the yacht at all times. All of our captains bring a lifetime of experience and are happy to answer questions and share stories. Two mates will assure safe docking and while aboard will assist guests with comfort, food, and beverages. Cruises booked with a private chef, bartender, or NYC tourguide will have these in addition.

Q Justine is a huge yacht! What is up with the 12 guest limit??

It's the law! The Justine is a private yacht. Under federal regulations any private boat taking paying passengers is only allowed SIX GUESTS, or TWELVE GUESTS for much larger boats – like the Justine - generally over 80 ft long. There are no exceptions; no passenger can be a "friend" or "crewmember" other than paid staff such as your event photographer, tourguide, or wedding officiant. Children do count as passengers. Our company is fully licensed and insured to take guests in a safe and compliant manner. We have been in business over 10 years. Charterers should be VERY wary of any operator telling you to put down excess passengers as "crew" or offering a "bareboat" contract in which the guests claim to be hiring the crew and taking liability for the cruise. None of that is legal nor insured. The Juliette is a unique vessel in NYC - an actual private luxury yacht which has been upgraded to meet Coast Guard commercial standards and legal for up to 40 guests. It still offers a private yacht look and feel.

Q I represent a client who has special security and privacy concerns.

We have broad experience in handling these concerns. All of our guests are entitled to 100% privacy and discretion. We never share any guest information. Crew do not carry phones or cameras. Private and diplomatic security personnel are welcome to travel with guests. Please contact us with any specific concerns or NDA's.

Q What can I bring?

Comfortable shoes and clothing and non-spray sunscreen. Cameras, phones, chargers. We will have towels, ice, and nonalcoholic beverages for every cruise. High heels and shoes with hard black soles are not allowed. Please do not bring any pollution hazards such as confetti, glitter, or streamers; fire hazards such as sparklers. hookahs, fireworks, or sternos; messy food items such as stews, soups, curries, chicken wings, ice cream cakes, bloody mary's, etc.

Q Can we bring children?

Yes, you are welcome to bring your children - HOWEVER they must be under constant adult supervision. We highly recommend bringing your nanny.

Q Can we bring pets?

We do not permit any pets aboard, other than authorized service animals assisting guests with a disability. We love furry guests but keep in mind they get scared, confused, and seasick on yachts.

Q Is there Wi-Fi?

No, but cell phones and streaming data will work throughout all of our routes.

Q What is the music situation?

Both yachts have speakers on all decks. Stereo systems play XM/Sirius radio or guests can Bluetooth their favorite music. You can bring a DJ with their own equipment as well.

Q Do I have to remove shoes aboard?

We do allow guests to wear their shoes aboard. We recommend comfortable options such as sandals or sneakers. High heels and mens' dress shoes with hard black soles are not permitted.

Q Are any parts of the yacht off-limits?

Guests are not allowed into the engine room or other clearly-marked restricted areas. However, anyone who wants an educational tour of the engines and machinery of the yacht is welcome to request this of the captain before or after a cruise. Staterooms with attached bathrooms are available on both yachts for private conversations, changing, hair/makeup, etc.

Q Where do you sail from? Where do you go?

Our home dock is Newport a private and upscale marina in the heart of the Jersey City Waterfront. It is located directly across the Holland Tunnel from Manhattan with PATH Train and garage parking onsite. We can pickup and dropoff guests at Chelsea Piers, North Cove (World Financial District), Dyckman Marina in uptown Manahttan, Liberty State Park (Jersey City), and One15 downtown Brooklyn Marina for varying fees. We can also serve the Hudson River Valley, Long Island, Connecticut and the Hamptons. Our typical 3 cruise covers all of Manhattan's iconic skyline, including the Empire State Building, Freedom Tower, Intrepid, Brooklyn Bridge, Ellis Island, and a close-up at the Statue of Liberty. Full day cruises can explore the Northern Hudson Valley, Sandy Hook, or Long Island Sound. The Hamptons, Montauk, Mystic, Newport RI, and Block Island require multiday bookings.

Q Which times/dates are available or recommended?

All of our cruises are custom and yachts are available any time, any day. Holidays and weekends are generally booked early. Some guests prefer spending all day under the sun, others prefer watching the city lights from the comfort of a private yacht at night. The most popular option is to book during sunset, 6-9pm or 7-10pm to experience daylight, sunset, and a bit of NYC after dark.

Q What if the weather is bad?

If the weather is unsafe to sail, we offer a no-fee rescheduling or if no mutually agreeable date is available, full refund. If the weather is not perfect but not unsafe (i.e. rain) we do our best to accommodate all guest requests. It is our goal to provide the best experience possible and in these situations we will try to work with you and see if better times/dates are available. The yacht interior is climate controlled and we do sail in rain. The contract does not provide for no-fee rescheduling or refund for inclement weather but we try to work with everyone to come up with mutually agreeable solutions.

Q I see the same boats listed everywhere? Where should I book this?

Our pricing is standardized and you should feel comfortable booking with any authorized agent or broker, or directly. Online "Airbnb"-style booking services may levy additional fees.

Q How do we pay for a cruise?

We take deposits on credit cards to reserve dates and expect the balance to be paid online via Zelle/ACH/"E-check". We also accept wires, bitcoin, cash, and company or bank checks.

Q What discounts do you offer?

Our pricing is based upon the substantial overhead costs of maintaining and professionally staffing multimillion dollar private yachts. We cut no corners and provide luxury service. Generally speaking, we do not offer discounts. We offer an experience which is often less expensive yet vastly superior to private service at exclusive Manhattan landside venues.

Q What is a customary tip?

Tips for hardworking crew are not included unless specifically added in advance. Tipping is appreciated and customary at the end of your cruise for an amazing experience. One tip for the entire crew, recommended at 18% of total charter fee, can be handed to the Captain and will be split evenly among the crew. Cash is preferred but credit cards, Zelle, and Venmo are also accepted.

Q I am an influencer! Please give me a free cruise so I can post photos of your yacht and get you tons of business!

Thank you but pass.

Q Are we allowed to swim from the yacht?

New York Harbor and the Hudson River have fast currents and heavy boat traffic and are NOT safe for swimming. We do permit swimming from the Justine yacht only, as part of full-day or overnight cruises. We will take you to a more protected area such as Croton, Coney Island, Manhasset Bay, or Sandy Hook. There is no swimming from the Juliette yacht, or as part of any half-day cruise.

Q Can I fly my drone?

We allow guests who wish to take a drone photo or video to do so from a dock only, either before or after the cruise. Any aerial videography from a moving yacht MUST be discussed and cleared with management well in advance (not during boarding). We must discuss homepoint settings, EMF interference, and have insurance and a damage deposit on file.

Q Are there any kayaks, jetskis, etc?

We operate primarily in New York Harbor, which is not a safe place for kayaking, wakeboarding, etc. We can bring water toys upon request for overnight or fullday charters leaving the metro area. Any jetskis require coordination with a third party rental company, which requires advanced planning.

Q Can we film aboard?

You are welcome to photograph/film and share whatever you like. Commercial film and photo shoots should be aware that we do not require permits to film aboard but marinas and docks will require permits for dockside filming. Our crew can help with layouts, positioning, and recommend locations and angles. All commercial film and photoshoots are subject to a $1250/hr flat fee, 4 hour minimum, with a credit card on file for overtime. We can assist with chase boats. Staterooms are available for monitors, hair/makeup/wardrobe, etc.

HEALTH AND SAFETY

Q What are your policies regarding masks and the Coronavirus?

We will fully comply with state and federal regulations which apply. Our guests are not currently required to mask and social distance aboard during the 2023 season.

Q Am I allowed to smoke on the yacht?

Smoking and Vaping is permitted on outside decks only. Ashtrays will be provided. Guests are not allowed to bring any smoking device with hot coals, such as hookahs, which present a fire hazard.

Q Are you Handicap-accessible?

No , these yachts are not ADA-compliant. All guests must ascend stairs to board and to access the top deck. However, we have hosted many guests with limited mobility, who board with the assistance of crew and family members. Please contact us with any specific concerns or requirements.

Q Will I be seasick?

New York Harbor generally is fairly calm although waves can be made by criss-crossing ferries. If you are prone to seasickness we recommend taking an over-the-counter medication such as Dramamine one hour in advance, not drinking alcohol, and spending time on outside decks. Crew cannot dispense medications.

Overnight Yacht Rentals In Miami

Book a yacht rental in Miami! It’s arguably one of the best boating destinations in the world. Crystal clear waters, stunning beaches, and perfect weather all year round – no Miami vacation is complete without a day on the water! That is why you have to book a yacht rental in Miami.

Looking to plan an incredible vacation on a yacht?

One of our most popular trips is an overnight yacht rental to the Bahamas!

How it Works

  • Choose your yacht
  • Choose your dates
  • Pick your Itinerary

Choosing Your Yacht

The most important thing to keep in mind when planning your overnight yacht rental in Miami is the number of beds. Most yachts over 60ft will come with at least 2 staterooms. Larger yachts will have more staterooms and more beds.

You’ll need to choose a yacht with enough beds and enough staterooms for your entire group. Also, make sure you note the sleeping arrangements on the yacht. Some yachts have staterooms with one queen bed and other rooms with two twin beds. Depending on the makeup of your group, you will want to choose different sleeping arrangements so that everyone is comfortable.

Choosing Your Dates

When you’re looking to book an overnight yacht rental in Miami, it’s best to plan at least 6-8 weeks in advance. This will help ensure that you get the yacht you are looking for on the exact dates you are looking for.

If you are looking to book around Christmas or new year’s, it’s best to try and plan at least 8-12 weeks in advance. The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year for overnight charters so be sure to plan in advance.

Pick Your Itinerary

When you arrive at the yacht in Miami, you will be welcomed by the crew and chef with drinks to start your trip. We’ll depart from Miami at 12pm and arrive in Bimini around 4pm.

When we arrive at Bimini we will stop off at Bimini Bay Resort where you can enjoy drinks and our crew will reserve a cabana for your. Our crew will also rent a golf cart and give you and your group a quick tour of the island. You can stop and see Ernest Hemingway’s house or visit the village and head to village beach which is a very popular beach club with a DJ.

When you arrive back to the boat, you can have a sunset dinner prepared by our chef and party on the yacht .

On the second day of the charter we will head to shipwreck SS Sapona. This is one of the best snorkeling locations in the Bahamas. You will see a plethora of fish and other wildlife since coral has developed on the SS Sapona. Guests absolutely love snorkeling at this location. It’s without a doubt one of the highlights of all of our Bimini charters.

After exploring shipwreck SS Sapona, we will head over to Honeymoon harbor where you can go swimming with stingrays. Honeymoon harbor also has water toys, jet skis, and paddleboards that you can use.

Final Thoughts

Feel free to reach out to one of our agents by calling 954-299-5455. Any of our charter specialists will be more than happy to answer any questions you might have and setup the ultimate overnight yacht rental from Miami.

Choose a vacation boat rental for a unique break

Searching for a unique vacation idea? Put a vacation boat rental at the top of your list and you’re all but guaranteed to earn some serious brownie points from family and friends. This is a vacation that serves up an ideal pace and tempting opportunities to either kick back and enjoy the scenery or “drop anchor” and head to shore for a while. Tempted? Here’s what you need to know about vacation boat rentals, along with a few handy hints as to the best destinations for on-the-water escapes.

Things to know about vacation boat rentals

The inviting interior living space on a modern houseboat

If you’ve decided to enjoy your next vacation on the water, there are a few things to know first. Read on for some top tips to ensure smooth sailing and a memorable experience.

What are vacation boats like?

Many vacation boats to rent in the USA fall into the category of houseboats – these floating vacation home rentals offering ample living and sleeping spaces, along with sun-drenched decks, full kitchens, and a water slide, of course. If you decide to go a little more upmarket, you’ll be able to enjoy amenities like hot tubs and jet skis, too. Floating homes and yacht charters can also be considered when planning a getaway on the water.

Are captain’s credentials needed?

If you opt for a traditional houseboat for your next boating vacation, then you won’t need any prior experience to take on the captain’s duties. On the contrary, a quick boating lesson is more than enough to see you navigating in confidence. On the other hand, if you decide to rent a yacht, then you’ll need to prove you have the necessary qualifications from the American Sailing Association – either that or rent a skippered yacht.

How much does it cost to rent a vacation boat?

The cost to rent a boat varies according to several factors, not least where and when you plan to enjoy your getaway but also how long you want the boat for. An overnight boat rental is going to set you back a lot less than a weekly boat rental, for example. Similarly, the cost of boating vacations also depends on how luxurious you want to go – the superyachts of this world commanding a hefty price even for an overnight rental.

Top destinations for vacation boat rentals

A houseboat enclave in the California city of Sausalito

The US is not exactly short of places to enjoy a boating vacation, though there are some firm favorites. Here are three of the top spots for boating vacations around the country.

Vacation boat rentals in California

The Golden State boasts oodles of exciting destinations for boating vacations you won’t forget in a hurry. Head first for Sausalito, home to some of the oldest houseboat enclaves in the country. Most of the boats here are permanently docked, though that just leaves plenty of room for checking out the city’s studios, shops, and galleries. If you’d prefer to do your exploring on the water, Shasta Lake , with its 400 miles of sumptuous shoreline, makes an excellent choice for boating breaks.

Vacation boat rentals in Kentucky

Heading to the Bluegrass State for your next boating vacation? The double delight served up by Kentucky Lake and Lake Barkley ensures you won’t be disappointed. The former is known for its rewarding sports fishing and exciting lineup of water sports, while the water park in the latter makes it an equally popular pick for summer rentals. In between the two, the Land Between the Lakes Recreation Area offers plenty of reasons to explore on land too.

Vacation boat rentals in Florida

Boat rentals in Florida are a tried-and-tested way to discover the Sunshine State – and, whether it’s a charming houseboat on the wildlife-rich St. John’s River or a sleek yacht in sultry Miami, there are countless options on the menu. Cocoa boat rentals, as well as those from Fort Lauderdale, are ideal for exploring Florida’s east coast, while a yacht rental from either of those launch spots gives you enough oomph to get to the Florida Keys and beyond.

Remember Me

Want to try something off the beaten path? Here are some weird things to do in Iowa.

yacht rental overnight

  • Spend the night at one of the most haunted places in the Midwest in Monticello
  • Appreciate the life of a hobo in Britt

Just curious:  This occasional feature in the Des Moines Register aims to answer your questions about Iowa. Is there some place, event, lore, history or cultural quirk you're just curious about? Email your question to the Des Moines Register's Bill Steiden at  [email protected] .

You can only make so many day trips to Adventureland before wondering, "What am I missing?" Thankfully, Iowa is home to an endless supply of weird, wacky and skin-crawling pastimes that'll make the most seasoned traveler do a double take.

Here are five tourist attractions for those looking to get off the beaten path.

Get all strung out on puppets in Mason City

Ever heard of Bill Baird? No?

You probably know Jim Henson though. Henson of Muppets fame interned with Baird before going on to create "Fraggle Rock" and the characters for "Sesame Street." The influence of Baird on Hensen's Muppets is clear at the Charles H. MacNider Art Museum in Mason City, which houses a special collection of his marionettes and hand puppets, including those used for "The Lonely Goatherd" scene in the film "The Sound of Music ."

Baird himself moved with his family as a teenager to Mason City, where he gave performances of “Treasure Island” in their attic, then returned there in his retirement. In between, Baird created thousands of puppets, including Charlemane the lion ( which played sidekick to legendary TV news anchor Walter Cronkite on a short-lived morning show), performed on Broadway and helped design floats for the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade .

The museum received its puppet selections directly from Baird.

Previously: Mason City museum improves display of puppet collection

The MacNider Museum building alone is worth a visit. The Tudor-style mansion is a former convent remodeled into a museum in 1965 with the goal of retaining the original home's personality. It now houses a permanent collection of American art, traveling exhibitions and an Imagination Playground for children.

The MacNider Museum is open Tuesday through Saturday, and admission is free.

Spend the night at the haunted Edinburgh Manor

Many people have heard of Edinburgh Manor in Monticello, a former mental institution and retirement home rumored to be one of the most haunted places in the Midwest. It's been featured on Zak Bagans' show "Ghost Adventures " and the Travel Channel's "Destination Fear ."

But did you know you can stay there overnight?

The manor offers private rooms for one to five people starting at $275 a night, with each additional person costing $55. Guests can explore the bedroom of “Susie” the ghost , listen for voices or look for the shadowy figure that lives in the basement. The owners claim to have had ghostly hands touch and squeeze them at night, the Cedar Rapids Gazette reported .

More: These 9 creepy Iowa ghost stories will give you goosebumps

It's not a hotel though; the building has electricity but no heat or running water. Overnight visitors have access to a house on site that has a bathroom and kitchen. Plan to bring your own sleeping bag because bedding isn't provided.

If that sounds too extreme, the owners offer a one-to-two-hour tour during daylight hours. Visits must be booked in advance and are typically offered on Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Admission to the day tour is $10 per person.

Or, visit the slight less spooky Spook Cave

If you're looking for an excursion for all ages, Spook Cave and Campground, about 7 miles west of McGregor in rural Clayton County, gives guided boat tours through a flooded cavern .

Early settlers near McGregor heard strange noises coming from a spring and originally called it Spook Hole. Only when local resident Gerald Mielke blasted into the bluff where the spring was in 1953 did he discover the flowing water that made the sound. He opened the cave to commercial touring in 1955 with an unusual underground boat tour — the only one in Iowa.

Spook Cave is open from May to October with reservations available on weekdays . Rides cost $16 for visitors 13 and older and $11 for children ages 4 to 12. There is no charge for children 3 or younger.

You also can turn your visit into a sleepover. Spook Cave offers camping nearby and a range of cabins to rent , all of which have electricity, heating and air conditioning. Swim at Camp Spook Lake, try your luck fishing at the Bloody Run trout stream or visit the nearby Railroad Employee Cemetery. A little more off the grid is Bloody Run Park, which has 19 primitive campsites for rent in a campground that is notably a home to Iowa’s largest woodpecker, the pileated .

Wander over to the Hobo Museum

Once a year in Britt, population 2,017, the largest documented annual gathering of hobos, rail-riders, and tramps in the United States takes place.

Since 1900, the city has been hosting the hobo convention — a weekend festival that includes a parade, entertainment, food and the election of the king and queen of the hobos. The hobos set up a hobo jungle, selling crafts and chatting with visitors.

The history of this relationship between Britt and its annual guests is documented at the National Hobo Museum, which began as the dream of three lifelong hobos determined to preserve the history of the American hobo, according to the museum's website . Opened in the 1980s, the collection housed in a former movie theater celebrates the lives of traveling laborers.

Make the most of your time in Britt by stopping by the Queen’s Garden across from the Hobo Museum and the National Hobo Cemetery in the northeast corner of Evergreen Cemetery.

The Hobo Museum opens after Memorial Day and closes after Hobo Days weekend, Aug. 8-10 this year. The museum will open during the off season, but only by appointment.

Get wheely into wheels at the L.J. Maasdam Wagon Wheel Sculpture

Leonard Maasdam of Pella loved unusual things.

He had a collection of more than 4,000 elephant figurines, a chandelier made of birthday balloons and a disco ball, and a model train that circled his home. One of his most eccentric creations, a 60-foot tower made of roughly 220 wagon wheels, can still be seen near a soybean field just a few miles off Interstate 80 north of Sully.

"The wheel is one of the oldest inventions of mankind. It goes back to Bible times," Maasdam told the Register in 1996. "I thought, 'There's a surplus of these wheels. Why not make use of them?'"

With the help of a hydraulic crane from Marshalltown, the 91 year old erected the rusty sculpture on a concrete base and surrounded it with a fence made of — wait for it — more wagon wheels. Maasdam's family maintains the site to this day at the intersection of South 48th Avenue East and East 140th Street South .

After you appreciate the art, head back to Sully for a bottle of almond mead at the Van Wijk Winery or grab a piece of coconut cream pie at the Coffee Cup Cafe , where Lance Armstrong stopped for a slice during his 2006 RAGBRAI ride.

Israel-Hamas war latest: Israeli military announces 'tactical pauses' in parts of southern Gaza - as minister says cabinet was not informed of decision

The IDF says it will hold daily tactical pauses in parts of southern Gaza to allow more aid to flow into the territory, where international aid organisations have decried a worsening humanitarian crisis. Itamar Ben-Gvir says the military did not seek cabinet approval for the plan.

Thanks for following our live coverage, that's all for today.

The Israeli state will continue to pay for the temporary housing and hotels for citizens caught up in the 7 October Hamas attacks and the resulting conflict with militant groups in Gaza and Lebanon.

Thousands of Israelis, particularly in the areas bordering Gaza and Lebanon, have been put up at the expense of the state since their displacement - allowed to return to their homes only when the security situation allows.

Earlier this year, our international correspondent Alex Rossi   visitedKiryat Shmona, an evacuated Israeli settlement near Lebanon, and described a ghost-town like scene...

Some of those in temporary living situations were hoping to return soon, but today the government's extension of the scheme seems to have poured cold water on that.

"The government, today, approved Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's proposal... to extend the period of lodging for residents who have been evacuated from their homes, in the hotels and temporary housing solutions, which are being financed by the state, until 15 August 2024," a statement from Mr Netanyahu's office read.

"This is according to professional considerations and an assessment of the overall conditions that would allow for the residents to return to their homes."

The Israel Defence Forces has struck what it says are Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon.

It said the air force had "intercepted a suspicious aerial target over southern Lebanon" and fighter jets were dispatched in response.

"IDF fighter jets struck a Hezbollah military structure in the area of Yaroun in southern Lebanon," it said in a statement, adding: "IDF [also] artillery fired to remove a threat in the area of Amra."

For context: Iran-backed, Lebanon-based Hezbollah, which means "Party of God" in Arabic, openly calls for the destruction of the "Zionist regime in Palestine" and is deemed a terror organisation by most Western powers.

The militia has long aligned itself with Hamas and Islamic Jihad and has frequently clashed with IDF forces on the Israel-Lebanon border since the most recent conflict broke out on 7 October.

But the violence has largely been contained to areas at the border, shaped by what observers have called unwritten rules of engagement between adversaries that have long threatened each other with catastrophic damage in the event of war.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has previously warned that Beirut would be turned "into Gaza" if Hezbollah started an all-out war.

These images show Muslims in Jerusalem praying outside the Al Aqsa mosque, known to Jews as the Temple Mount.

Access to the mosque has been strictly supervised by the Israel Defence Forces in recent months, with many worshippers complaining about unnecessarily tight rules for a holy place.

As we outlined in our 7.12am post, today Muslims are holding prayers for Eid al Adha.

The holiday, commonly translated as the Feast of Sacrifice, is the second of the two main Islamic holidays alongside Eid al Fitr.

The US Navy has shared details of how its sailors rescued the crew of a commercial ship struck by the Yemeni Houthi group.

The Liberian-flagged, Greek-owned bulk cargo carrier M/V Tutor was struck by a Houthi "unmanned vessel" in the southern Red Sea on 12 June, which "caused severe flooding and damage to the engine room".

"A helicopter from helicopter maritime strike squadron 74 airlifted 24 civilian mariners from Tutor to Ticonderoga-class guided-missile cruiser USS Philippine Sea," the navy said.

"From there, helicopters from helicopter sea combat squadron 7 transported the group to USS Dwight D Eisenhower."

After being medically checked on board, the mariners were flown ashore for follow-on care.

One civilian mariner remains missing, however.

For context: The Yemen-based, Iran-backed Houthis say they are targeting any and all ships they believe are linked, operated, owned, flagged or travelling to or from Israel.

US and British destroyers are among an international naval taskforce set up to combat the Houthi attacks in the area.

Earlier, we brought you the words of Israel's far-right security minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who dubbed the "tactical pause" plans for parts of southern Gaza "delusional".

Finance minister Bezalel Smotrich, who chairs the ultra-nationalist Religious Zionist Party, has similarly criticised the plan.

Mr Ben-Gvir and Mr Smotrich are two of the biggest supporters of the war in Gaza, but often suggest the military or those controlling it do not go far enough.

"The 'humanitarian aid' that continues to reach Hamas keeps it in power and may put the achievements of the war down the drain," Mr Smotrich said.

"The problem is that the [IDF's] general headquarters is completely disconnected from the existence of the forces in the field," he added.

Reports have swirled that neither cabinet nor the prime minister and his defence secretary were made aware of the IDF announcement before it went public.

By  Alistair Bunkall ,  Middle East correspondent

The decision to pause fighting for 11 hours a day along two main routes in Gaza comes as a result of international pressure on Israel and the desperate need to get aid flowing around the Strip.

The Rafah crossing, between Gaza and Egypt, has been closed ever since Israel began military operations there some weeks ago.

As well as humanitarian aid, it was also the main route for fuel into Gaza.

The US floating pier has been unsuccessful and is again being temporarily dismantled due to rough seas.

Aid has been piling up on the Gaza side of the Kerem Shalom crossing with too few lorries to collect it.

When the trucks do move, they're often looted before getting far.

This localised pause does not mean an end to the fighting.

In fact, the fighting around Rafah has been particularly intense over recent days and Israel has made it clear operations will continue there and elsewhere.

The corridor, although limited, should help movement of aid, however, and could be expanded if successful.

These images show the scale of recent protests against Benjamin Netanyahu's government in Tel Aviv.

As we reported earlier, protests are increasing in frequency, attendance and tension as parts of the Israeli public voice their anger at the lack of movement on a ceasefire and hostage deal with Hamas (see 8.59am post).

These pictures were taken by a drone last night.

Tactical pauses near Rafah are "delusional", Israel's far-right security minister has said.

Itamar Ben-Gvir said: "The one who decided on a 'tactical truce' for the purpose of a humanitarian transition, especially at a time when many of our soldiers are falling in battle, is evil and a fool who should not continue in his position.

"Unfortunately, this move was not brought before the cabinet and is contrary to its decisions."

Mr Ben-Gvir has repeatedly called for Israel to stop aid deliveries to Gaza during the war and to re-occupy the territory.

"It's time to get out of the concept and stop the crazy and delusional approach that only brings us more dead and fallen," he concluded.

There are also reports among Israeli outlets that the announcement this morning also came as a surprise to the remaining war cabinet ministers - defence minister Yoav Gallant and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Hamas's response to the Joe Biden ceasefire proposal was largely consistent with the US president's plans, the group's leader has said.

Speaking to mark Eid al Adha, Ismail Haniyeh said: "The movement, along with all the resistance factions, has shown great seriousness and great flexibility in order to reach an agreement that will spare the blood of our people and stop the aggression.

"Our response... is compatible with the foundations contained in Biden's speech and the Security Council resolution regarding the three stages of the deal and the terms of the ceasefire," he added.

Haniyeh then blamed Israel for not showing any flexibility and attempting "to circumvent and deceive through proposals and ideas aimed at obtaining prisoners and returning to resume the war of extermination again".

For context:  Joe Biden's proposal, outlined at the end of May, was accepted by Israel on Tuesday night - but not publicly.

Hamas initially suggested it had accepted the deal, but on Wednesday, Antony Blinken spoke in Qatar and said Hamas had requested changes to the deal.

"Some of the changes are workable, some are not," he said.

Reports suggested Hamas wants written guarantees from the US over a permanent ceasefire and withdrawal of Israeli forces from Gaza before it signs off on the deal.

What is the proposed deal?

The first of the proposed three-phase deal would be a ceasefire lasting six weeks, during which Israel and Hamas would negotiate a permanent end to the fighting in Gaza, Mr Biden said when outlining the plan at the end of May.

If the negotiations take longer than six weeks, the ceasefire would continue for as long as it takes to strike a deal, he added.

Phase two would involve Hamas handing over the remaining hostages and Israel withdrawing all of its forces from Gaza.

The final phase would be about a "major reconstruction plan" for Gaza, according to the president.

It was backed by the United Nations Security Council on Monday.
