Eclipse – The World’s Most Expensive Private Yacht

Eclipse mega yacht

In the world of soccer, Roman Abramovich is a popular figure as he owns the leading English club, Chelsea. The Russian businessman helped the Blues become a big spender in the transfer market, bringing brilliant players like Arjen Robben, Didier Drogba, Fernando Torres, etc. to offer the beautiful game to club supporters across the world.

In addition to the Chelsea football team, which is a beauty on soccer fields, Abramovich owns another marvel: a private yacht named Eclipse.

The 162.5m-long beauty Eclipse is the world’s second-largest and one of the most expensive superyachts. Its estimated cost is 590 million (€340 million), and its current owner has owned it since December 2010.

A synonym for luxury, this superyacht is best suited for all adventure and water sports activities and provides splendid trips to cultural and historical destinations.

Built by renowned German shipbuilder Blohm + Voss, the Eclipse was launched in June 2009 after five years of design, development, and testing. Before its final delivery, several sea trials were conducted starting in May 2009 at Kristiansand, Norway.

When delivered, Eclipse won the spot for the largest superyacht in the world, beating the 162m-long M/Y Dubai of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates. Eclipse retained the title until the arrival of the 180m-long Azzam, UAE President Khalifa bin Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan’s private yacht in 2013. Currently managed by Blue Ocean Yacht Management, Eclipse was selected as the Motor Yacht of the Year in 2011 at the World Superyacht Awards.

Specifications of Eclipse Yacht

As mentioned earlier, this tremendous superyacht measures 162.5m (533’1″ft) in length, 22.00m (72’2″ft) in width and 5.90m (19’4″ft) in the draft, offering a vast area for luxurious leisure activities. The Bermuda-flagged Lloyds Register class yacht has a Gross Tonnage of 13000 tonnes.

Eclipse is powered by a diesel-electric, dual propulsion system with four MTU 20V 1163 TB93 marine diesel engines, offering the latest propulsion technology for maximum speed performance. These engines power the rotating Azipod drives, giving the yacht a maximum speed of 25 knots and a cruise speed of 22. Featuring 1,000,000 litres of fuel tanks, Eclipse can travel up to 6,000 nautical miles at 21 knots before refuelling. The boat also can store about 150,000 litres of freshwater abroad.

Interior and Exterior Design

While Blohm + Voss provided the naval architecture, Terence Disdale Design carried out the superstructure design of the Eclipse. The UK-based award-winning firm was also responsible for interior design, deck layouts, and construction supervision.

Incidentally, the vessel’s construction was performed with great secrecy, and due to this reason, the project was named Project Luxury Yacht M 147 throughout the construction period. However, the details of the technical design and construction of the yacht have not been revealed to the public; the design and layout are available for people to marvel at.

Divided into nine decks, the top deck of Eclipse is taken up by the helicopters and garage. The swimming pool and sundeck go on level eight, while level seven features a pool, atrium and an open deck. The salon, main dining hall and a 40ft X 60ft full-beam loggia are located on the sixth level, and the fourth floor features the main entrance of the yacht. While the next level of the yacht divides the cabins and suites of the owner, guests and crew, the second deck of the vessel acts as a docking port for the submarine. Level one accommodates the engine room, machinery, and a small disco club.

The superyacht with a displacement steel hull has an aluminium superstructure, while its decks become magnificent, featuring teak woods. To offer a smooth cruising experience, the yacht features an ultra-modern stabilization system that minimises the roll motion effect and is equipped with ‘at anchor stabilisers’ to increase comfort when the boat is stationary. Featuring the Art Deco interior design, with an innovative, technology-rich environment and the use of soft metallic fabrics, Eclipse offers a splendid living experience for its owner. With diverse facilities across the decks, the yacht meets the optimum standard of offering a leisure time platform.

The entire yacht has been bejewelled with features to make it more luxurious. Spread across many decks, Eclipse facilities abroad include a gym, dance floor, underwater lights, beach club, wifi connection, beauty salon, tender, garage, deck jacuzzi, etc. Further, the Eclipse holds two helipads and a 16 m swimming pool that can be converted into a dance floor. This motor yacht can accommodate three helicopters, two on both helipads and the third one in a storage hangar below the foredeck. Moreover, Eclipse also flaunts internal lifts, six tenders and an exterior fireplace on-board. The boat also features a place for a three-person private submarine that can go up to a depth of 160ft.

Eclipse is also one of the most technologically advanced yachts around the world.  The boat boasts the latest technology safety features, including motion sensors, bulletproof glass and antiballistic missile defence.  In fact, each cabin in the yacht comes with a private 6ft home cinema screen, a Jacuzzi, a spa and specialized security systems. According to reports, Eclipse has an anti-paparazzi system that detects the use of digital cameras to click photographs of the boat. Using lasers, the system detects digital cameras and disrupts a potential picture of the yacht, as those infrared lights can make it unstable.

Accommodation

The yacht has 11 staterooms and suites, totalling 6000 square feet. With this facility, Eclipse can house 30 guests and a 92-member staff crew abroad. The master suite, located on level five of the yacht, is 5000 square feet alone. In addition, the boat also has a pilothouse on level seven.

With all these facilities incorporated, maintaining the Eclipse is not a less expensive matter. An annual expense of over $60 million is reportedly required to maintain this luxury boat. According to media reports, Abramovich charges its customers around £ 175,000 to rent the vessel for a day.

Motor Yacht

Motor yacht Eclipse, completed at the end of 2010 at the Blohm + Voss Hamburg shipyard, features interiors by Terence Disdale Design and is the world’s second largest superyacht.

At  her launch in 2010 the 164m Eclipse’s unprecedented size had ensured her construction had been shrouded in secrecy, and as such, subject to much rumour and speculation from both the international press and superyacht enthusiasts.

Although details of the luxury megayacht are being extremely well hidden, it is known that her interiors feature designs by the renowned London-based team at Terence Disdale Design.

Russian Billionaire Roman Abramovich is the owner of this giant yacht which is believed to accommodate 36 guests in 18 cabins and also cater for a staggering 70 crew members.

Amongst the armada of lavish extras thought to be onboard are a three-man leisure submarine, two swimming pools, one of which is 16-metres long with an adjustable depth feature that allows it to be converted into a dance floor. Other extras include an exterior fireplace and six tenders as well as accommodation for three helicopters.

Cast your vote in the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts

Eclipse crowned the winner of the first World Cup of Superyachts

After a gruelling week of competition and over 47,000 votes cast, the 162 metre Blohm+Voss superyacht Eclipse has been crowned the winner of the inaugural World Cup of Superyachts.

The competition began with 16 of the greatest yachts drawn from a hat and the number was swiftly whittled down to a face-off in the grand final between Eclipse and Octopus - two of the most impressive yachts ever built.

  • Step on board the 162.5m Eclipse - the second largest superyacht in the world

At 162 metres in length, Eclipse had size on her side as one of the largest yachts in the world (second only to Azzam who she knocked out in the semi-finals). With nine decks and the design talents of the legendary Terence Disdale touching every curve and corner, she is a truly remarkable vessel. But what Octopus may lack in size at a comparably modest 126 metres, she more than makes up for in her pandora's box of toys, from the two helicopters sitting side by side in the hangar to the 10-person Pagoo submarine (not to mention her globetrotting 12,500 nautical mile range.)

The competition was tough and the battle well fought, but it was Eclipse that came out on top after a week of voting across social media and boatinternational.com.

You can listen to the draw as it happened on our BOAT Briefing podcast .

Inside the ‘Scenic Eclipse,’ the World’s Most Luxurious Expedition Megayacht

Referred to as a “discovery yacht,” the cutting-edge boat features its own helicopters, a fleet of zodiac boats, a submarine and a near-endless list of high-end amenities.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours' Scenic Luxury discovery yacht

There’s no reason why scientific discovery and luxury have to be mutually exclusive. That’s the thinking of Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours , whose just-launched expedition cruise ship, Scenic Eclipse , attempts to wed the two in one massive, 551-foot megayacht .

After years of delays, the 228-passenger ship finally launched last month and was christened by Dame Helen Mirren in New York on Tuesday. Referred to by Scenic as a “discovery yacht,” the cutting-edge boat features its own helicopters, a fleet of Zodiac boats, a submarine and a near-endless list of high-end amenities, all of which help it set a new high-end standard for expedition-style travel. It will travel to 68 ports around the world, spending half the year in Antarctica and the Arctic , the two main expedition cruise destinations.

“In terms of innovation, technology and design, [ Scenic Eclipse ] is second to none,” the company’s chairman and founder Glen Moroney said last month. “The onboard helicopters and submarine and our handcrafted itineraries that take our guests to 38 countries in some of the world’s most stunning and remote locations.”

And it would appear that no expense was spared to take ocean exploration to the next level. For instance, the boat boasts 114 cabins, each of which is a sizable suite—including a living room, veranda and a butler service. The $10,000-per-night, two-bedroom Owner’s Penthouse Suite reportedly measures a staggering 2,659 square feet. Spa suites, meanwhile, include a double-sized Philippe Starck-designed jacuzzi, steam shower and light therapy.

The luxury doesn’t stop inside the rooms, either. The Scenic Eclipse features 10 different restaurants—with cuisines ranging from French to Japanese—overseen by executive chef Tom Goetter. There are also eight bars, one of which serves over 100 top-shelf varieties of whiskey. If you’re an aspiring chef yourself, the yacht boasts a cooking classroom, where guests can learn how to make the delicious dishes they’ve eaten. A built-in theater offers films and lectures. There’s also plenty of beauty and health amenities, like the 5,920-square-foot Senses Spa, which includes Scandanavian-style pools, a gym and a Pilates studio, as well as a hair salon.

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours' Scenic Luxury discovery yacht

Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours’ Scenic Luxury expedition cruise ship  Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours

In addition to the onboard amenities, the yacht will also actively help you explore the areas away from it. The Scenic Eclipse   includes two six-passenger helicopters, a first for an expedition cruise ship, and a fleet of Zodiac boats for adventuring. There’s also a six-passenger submarine, the Scenic Neptune , that can reach depths of 1,000 feet. And because this is an expedition cruise ship, it was built to withstand the elements. It holds the preeminent ice-class rating for a passenger vessel, Polar Class 6, which means passengers have nothing to worry about during voyages in Antarctica and the Arctic.

With all these luxury and technology features, it’s easy to see why a trip on the Scenic Eclipse doesn’t come cheap. Fares start at at $6,395 per person based on a double occupancy, though polar expeditions can cost much more. But that fare does come with a lot, including air travel, pre-departure hotel, all meals and drinks. Helicopter and submarine rides, of course, are extra.

TPG's first look at expedition cruise ship Scenic Eclipse: What I loved and what needs work

Ashley Kosciolek

Editor's Note

Scenic Eclipse, the James Bond of ships, is elegant yet formidable.

The ship is the first expedition-focused vessel from Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours, a cruise line known for its upscale river cruises and land-based trips.

Until recently, expedition ships were spartan, offering only bare-bones amenities and less-than-swanky accommodations. However, Scenic is among a number of lines bringing luxury to the adventure cruising scene. I expected the line would get the upscale touches right, and indeed, Eclipse is over-the-top elegant without trying too hard. However, does the ship blend style and function?

The answer: Yes. Seamlessly.

I've just disembarked my first-ever expedition cruise, an 11-day voyage to the Arctic, and I'm in love. Not just with the stunning scenery and cute animals, but with this ship which, like the polar bears we watched from its observation decks, commands respect because it's built to survive the terrain and is fully capable of doing so.

Scenic Eclipse is small in size, holding only 200 passengers. It's able to visit remote places that many other cruise ships can't. In that, it feels exclusive.

However, its welcoming interior belies a reinforced hull that can break through first-year ice with ease. I soaked in the magic of the region in absolute comfort while surrounded by landscapes many early explorers found to be deadly. The disparity was thrilling.

Nearly three years after it first set sail — and more than two years after its initial voyages were cut short by the COVID-19 pandemic — the ship quietly arrived in the Arctic for the first time, bringing with it improvements from initial rounds of passenger feedback. Here are my impressions of the first in Scenic's line of luxury expedition vessels.

What I loved

Form and function.

eclipse yacht wiki

Scenic Eclipse resembles a large yacht rather than a standard cruise ship — and its aura of sophistication and exclusivity made me feel like royalty. A powerhouse in the luxury space, Scenic knows a thing or two about pampering its passengers, so I wasn't surprised that the line nailed that part.

What fascinated me more was how well the ship was built to handle the wilderness of polar cruising and how successfully practical spaces were incorporated into its gorgeous design. In other words, the vessel isn't merely pretty; it's functional. The juxtaposition doesn't go unnoticed.

Underneath the ship's sleek exterior are a slew of amenities. They include a central lounge and bar serving 130 different whiskies (all of them free), a theater with cushy leather lounge chairs instead of standard seating, a high-end spa, a specially designed kitchen space for cooking classes and even a submarine and pair of helicopters for passengers who want to take their excursions to the next level.

eclipse yacht wiki

Mudrooms are standard on expedition ships. However, I was surprised by how Scenic Eclipse made this mundane room feel fancy with its leather seating, simple-but-polished design and orderly cubbies for storing Muck boots, which are provided to passengers for use during sailings.

It also doubles as well-organized storage for kayaking suits, booties, gloves and life jackets, which are doled out by the kayaking leaders before each excursion.

eclipse yacht wiki

Everything — mudroom, laundry room, boot cleaners and water sports equipment storage on the lowest decks — is laid out to maximize efficiency and keep the grime away from other areas of the ship, allowing intrepid exploration to harmoniously coexist with the leisurely way of life on board.

Even the superstructure is designed to allow for upscale functionality, with the vessel's aft exterior walls able to fold in to allow room for the helicopters to take off and land. (Note: Scenic Eclipse is not allowed to use the helicopters in the Arctic.) It's also outfitted with stabilizers, so efficient we barely felt any movement during the voyage.

In an effort to be more environmentally friendly, the ship runs on cleaner-burning fuel. It also employs some fancy technology, such as a dynamic positioning system (instead of anchors, which can harm the ocean floor and wildlife living in the off-the-beaten-path places where it sails) that uses GPS coordinates and thrusters to keep the ship in one spot when it stops.

Public spaces

eclipse yacht wiki

My favorite space on the ship was the Scenic Lounge, where passengers can sprawl out in alcoves in what feels like a cozy living room flanked by the guest services desk and the aforementioned whiskey bar. It made me want to curl up on a couch and read in my pajamas, but I resisted the urge.

With furnishings crafted from sustainable materials, the lounge is the central location for daily trivia hosted by the entertainment staff, as well as the meeting point for daily excursions, which are organized by color groups.

eclipse yacht wiki

The observation lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows and comfortable sitting areas, was my second-favorite onboard area. It was almost always underused, which meant I could find a quiet place to work, read (it's also the ship's library) or grab a cup of coffee while staring out at the scenery.

Sadly, the self-serve coffee machine was often empty, and when it worked, the drinks tasted watered down. The full wall of gourmet Kusmi teas made up for it, though.

eclipse yacht wiki

My only gripe (and it's been echoed by passengers before me): The sightlines here are truncated by the vessel's bow, so it doesn't offer the uninterrupted views you'd expect from an observation lounge.

eclipse yacht wiki

One of the other complaints passengers reported when Scenic Eclipse debuted was an ill-placed indoor pool found smack in the center of the ship's buffet. The line took note and removed the buffet pool, replacing it with an open seating area. (The move did leave the ship without a main pool, though passengers can take a dip in either of the two tiny plunge pools in the spa.)

Seeing what the venue looks like now, I can't imagine how cramped, humid and loud it must have been trying to eat with fellow passengers splashing away in the same enclosed space. Now, the area has much more seating and offers one of the most aesthetically pleasing buffet experiences I've ever had at sea, along with superb food.

Expedition guides and entertainment leaders

eclipse yacht wiki

Normally I shout out the crew on ships where service is stellar. On Scenic Eclipse, my butler, room steward and the guest services team were phenomenal, as one might expect on a cruise vessel of this caliber. However, here I want to focus on two groups of staff who truly set this cruise apart: the entertainment leaders and the expedition guides.

eclipse yacht wiki

Cruise director Amy and her assistant, Pablo, led daily trivia, often with fun twists like musical clues that they sang themselves.

On a ship so tiny, there were trivia regulars, including the people in my group and me. On days when we missed the quizzes because they conflicted with excursions, they found time to read us the questions later in the day and provided additional brain teasers like word scrambles and rebus puzzles.

Additionally, the ship's expedition guides, who were friendly and exceedingly knowledgeable about all things flora, fauna, rocks and ice, were quick to answer questions and share their vast wealth of facts. Everyone I encountered was accommodating and insightful.

eclipse yacht wiki

They led us on daily Zodiac sailings, kayaking excursions and hikes, where they pointed out wildlife and remnants from previous visitors to the areas where we landed. They discussed flowers and the differences between local birds. They talked about why female polar bears are the ones to wear collars and how long they stay with their young. They also gave daily enrichment presentations, where they shared information about the history of Svalbard and quirky tidbits like how many McDonald's Big Macs an adult human would have to consume for enough energy to trek through the Arctic.

They were allowed to be more social with passengers than on more mainstream vessels, which created an extra layer of personalization. If invited, they were permitted to join us for dinner, which they did on several occasions. It was during mealtimes that we learned more about how they started their careers and what continues to draw them back on board.

eclipse yacht wiki

What might not be immediately apparent is that Scenic Eclipse offers an outsized number of dining options for a ship of this class. Each venue is small, but the menus are practically perfect in terms of selection. They're also delightfully fancy — but no egos get in the way of special requests or substitutions.

As a somewhat picky eater, I'm not a fan of certain types of meat and was worried I'd be hard-pressed to enjoy some of the restaurants on the ship. It turns out my fears were completely unfounded, and the culinary staff couldn't have been more gracious in accommodating my likes and dislikes.

At the reservation-only venues — including French restaurant Lumiere, Koko's Sushi and Night Market teppanyaki, as well as the chef's table (by invitation) — I was able to either find something I liked on the menu or request a vegetarian substitute. At Lumiere, I opted for a fabulous plant-based steak, and before dining at the chef's table, a quick call to the front desk meant my candied foie gras was replaced by an exquisite candied date instead.

eclipse yacht wiki

A vegetarian travel companion commented that she was impressed with the selection for people who don't eat meat at all, grateful that it extended beyond merely steamed vegetables and French fries.

My favorite food items from this trip were a Mediterranean tuna taco and falafel with beetroot and yogurt from the Night Market, which featured a new cuisine each night; a beef stick made to look like a cigar at the Chef's Table; and chicken tikka masala from the Yacht Club buffet.

eclipse yacht wiki

Other standouts included Swedish pancakes with lingonberries from the room service breakfast menu; cookies, a hamburger, fruit pavlovas and Margherita pizza from the Azure Cafe; and truffle fries and daily risotto creations in Elements, the Italian restaurant.

Oh, and whatever you do, don't miss the out-of-this-world grape cotton candy from Koko's, which houses two Asian dining options, including a sushi venue that has all of its fish flown in from Japan.

eclipse yacht wiki

For travelers who like to cook their own meals, there's also a special kitchen where passengers can sign up to cook with the chef.

eclipse yacht wiki

As for drinks, remember to ask your expedition guide if you can grab a chunk of ice from a nearby glacier to take back on board after a Zodiac tour. The bar staff will rinse it and break it up for use in your favorite cocktails. (You can hear it snap, crackle and pop as it melts in your glass and releases air bubbles trapped inside.)

eclipse yacht wiki

In line with the rest of the ship, the cabins on Scenic Eclipse are ritzy but somewhat dark. Most of the time, that wasn't a problem for me, as it created a feeling of calm.

Everything is high-end, from the beds that adjust with remote controls and Illy coffee machines to the rainfall showerheads and Dyson hair dryers. (Finally, a ship hair dryer that actually worked — perhaps a little too forcefully, given how thoroughly it knotted my hair.)

All cabins are suites, offering far more space than what you'll find on most other ships — especially expedition vessels — and they're gloriously soundproof. I could barely hear any noise from the hall, and I couldn't hear any at all from above, below or next door.

eclipse yacht wiki

I'm not a big drinker, but with just about all onboard beverages included, it was nice to see a minifridge stocked with soda, beer and other libations. There was also a decanter set that could've been filled with my favorite liquors, had I asked for them. Carafes of water, replenished as they ran low, rounded out the choices.

My butler — yes, every cabin has one — also got into the habit of bringing me daily treats like bowls of potato chips or plates of cheese.

Other cabin flourishes include a surplus of outlets and USB ports for charging, as well as bathrobes, umbrellas and binoculars for use during the sailing.

eclipse yacht wiki

I had a large balcony, which was lovely, but I only used it a handful of times during my cold-weather cruise. It provided a terrific vantage point for photos on most days, and it allowed me to take some wonderful videos when we found ourselves in the middle of an ice field.

The balcony has an electronic blackout shade that lifts and lowers with the push of a button. It's immensely useful in polar regions, where you'll get 24 hours of light at times of the year.

eclipse yacht wiki

Most standard bathrooms are shower-only, and the ship provides its own brand of Espa toiletries: two-in-one hair and body wash, conditioner and lotion. I appreciated the nightlight at the base of the sink, too. (I never did figure out how to turn it off, though.)

What still needs work

eclipse yacht wiki

While we're on the subject of cabins, I'd be remiss if I didn't point out some elements that don't work as well.

The first is the bathroom sink. The entirety of the top is a slope down which the water flows to a trough at the bottom. There is absolutely no counter space, which is particularly frustrating for anyone trying to do their hair or put on makeup, or for men who like to shave by filling up the sink basin.

eclipse yacht wiki

Oddly, the cube-shaped pewter handle on the shower makes it difficult to open said door, as it provides no grip and hurts if you hold it a certain way. To get in the shower, I had to grab the top of the door and pull to get it open.

And then there is the television. Its placement in front of the couch isn't ideal because it catches a glare from the overhead lights and the balcony (especially when the midnight sun shines during summer in the Arctic). It's also cleverly hidden inside of a floor-to-ceiling glass mirror, which means it can't be angled to allow for in-bed viewing. The ship's first passengers complained bitterly about this, but the line has yet to correct the problem.

Shoreside operations

eclipse yacht wiki

I can't overstate how amazing the staff was on my cruise. They were friendly, knowledgeable and anticipated our every need. Shoreside operations still need quite a bit of work, though. The most critical issue Scenic needs to address right now is its off-ship logistics and communications.

For example, all fares for Scenic's expedition voyages include a pre-cruise hotel stay. The accommodations arranged by the line were fine for me. However, passengers expecting luxury (and with fares starting at $13,000 per person for a 10-day sailing, who wouldn't?) were disappointed.

Check-in took a very long time, the rooms were fairly basic (at least I got one that wasn't already occupied, unlike some travelers) and the embarkation-day breakfast was a brown bag with an apple and yogurt.

eclipse yacht wiki

Again, just about everything involving the onboard experience was top-notch, so the irritation among passengers quieted until the disembarkation briefing, which was held on the second-to-last night of the cruise.

A future-cruise consultant who was running the presentation told everyone the charter flight from Svalbard back to Olso, originally scheduled to depart around midday, had been changed to 7 p.m.

eclipse yacht wiki

Passengers demanded to know why they weren't informed sooner, given that many of them had dinner reservations in Oslo that evening or, worse, connecting flights home that they would miss due to the new later departure time.

Scenic knew about the change just a couple of days into the voyage (the public relations team that organized the press trip I was on told me as soon as they found out), so it was unclear why other passengers weren't immediately informed. Also, the fact that the line scheduled two tours in Svalbard to help cruisers pass the time until the later flight only seemed to anger them more.

"I don't want to spend six hours at some stupid museum that only takes me an hour to see," said one woman.

Several people from the U.S. and U.K. then raised their hands to complain that they emailed customer service with various questions prior to sailing but received no response.

Another said he got two confirmation emails for a helicopter booking, despite the fact that the ship's helicopters are not allowed to be used in the Arctic. (That was also not clearly communicated to passengers before embarkation, leading to much disappointment.)

eclipse yacht wiki

As more passengers weighed in, a trend became clear: The onboard team has its act together; shoreside operations does not.

On the last day, the shipboard staff rallied to allow us to stay on board until it was time to leave for the airport, stretching their resources thin as they prepared breakfast and lunch for us and turned over all the cabins for the next group of cruisers embarking later that day.

However, the folks handling land-based logistics dropped the ball again when a member of our travel party, who requested wheelchair assistance in advance, had no chair and no attendant waiting for him when we landed in Oslo.

eclipse yacht wiki

A few days after arriving home, my fellow passengers and I received an email from the line's founder and executive chairman, Glen Moroney, offering an apology for the scattered nature of the pre- and post-cruise experiences and explaining why certain aspects of the trip had gone awry.

He blamed a recent hacking incident, which necessitated a full website rebuild, delaying communications between the line and passengers.

To solve the issues, the letter said the line has beefed up its cybersecurity, and is currently working to hire and train additional reservations staff. It wasn't done quickly enough to stave off problems on my sailing, but, hopefully, logistics and communication will improve going forward.

What's next

eclipse yacht wiki

Overall, Scenic Eclipse is a luxurious vessel run by helpful and knowledgeable staff who go above and beyond to make sure passengers have the best time possible. The line has listened to its passengers and made onboard improvements to areas like the buffet, but there are still some quirks to be worked out, particularly in the way of shoreside logistics.

Looking ahead, Scenic's next expedition ship will be Scenic Eclipse II, a sister vessel to Scenic Eclipse. Although the general layout will be similar, and the ship will still have two helicopters, the line plans to make tweaks to the ship's design. They include the addition of an outdoor pool and an upgraded submarine with an expanded capacity of eight passengers, plus a driver. Scenic Eclipse will also replace its submarine with a newer model.

eclipse yacht wiki

In terms of new activities, one of the expedition guides let it slip that the cruise line is considering offering added-fee heliskiing. The expedition ships would use their helicopters to take cruisers to the top of a mountain and allow them to ski back down. There has been no official word yet on when this might be available and whether passengers would need to bring their own gear.

Scenic Eclipse II floated out at a shipyard in Croatia in July and is due to make its debut in April of 2023. After Scenic Eclipse II, the line has ordered three additional ships.

Scenic Eclipse 2 Review

Review of scenic eclipse 2.

The 2023-built Scenic Eclipse 2 cruise ship is Croatia ( Rijeka )-built superyacht. The same-designed sistership Scenic Eclipse 1 was inaugurated in 2019.

The vessel (IMO number 9850460) is currently Bahamas- flagged (MMSI 238269640) and registered in Nassau . Curiously, during its construction, the vessel was Croatia-flagged and named "NOVOGRADNJA 101" (MMSI 238269640) and "BRIONI" (MMSI 238000000).

This is a top-luxury superyacht with max passenger capacity 228 (plus 192 staff-crew) and a 10-deck design, more resembling a billionaire yacht than a passenger ship. The ultra-modern design features an ice-strengthened hull, top-deck helipad (with two on-deck stored helicopters / in hangars), 12x Zodiacs (high-speed, large-capacity RIBs / rigid inflatable boats), 1x submersible (9-person mini-submarine/model "Triton 660-9 AVA"), 1x ROV (camera-equipped Remotely Operated Vehicle). The aft-located Marina Platform is used for launching water sports equipment (aqua quad-bikes, seakayaks, snorkeling and scuba diving activities).

Scenic Eclipse II cruise ship

With the top-luxury expedition superyachts Eclipse 1 and Eclipse 2, Scenic Cruises and Tours (1987-founded river cruisetour company) entered the ocean-cruising market. The first boat (Eclipse 1) was launched in August 2018 and inaugurated in September 2019. The second vessel (Eclipse II) was scheduled for inauguration in 2020 but postponed to 2022-Q3 and eventually, to 2023 (April).

Besides Scenic Luxury Cruises and Tours, the shipowner Scenic Group also owns the subsidiary and travel brand Emerald Cruises .

Scenic Cruises yacht design

Scenic's new ships are advertised as "discovery yachts". The hull has the highest passenger ship ice-class (1A-Super) allowing the vessel to operate on polar cruises (Arctic and Antarctica itineraries) for 3 months a year. On polar voyages, the ship's passenger capacity is limited to 200 in order to allow several Zodiac landings per day.

Scenic Cruises yacht submarine

The ship's 2 helicopters Airbus H130 (single-engine aircraft, each with capacity 7 passengers) can be booked/hired at extra charge. Helicopter tours allow passengers to get closer to the wildlife in comparison to the Zodiac landings. Also at an additional charge can be booked the ship's Triton submarine. The 9-person submarine (1 pilot plus 8 passengers) is named "Scenic Neptune" and is capable to submerge up to 660 ft (200 m).

Decks and Cabins

Scenic Eclipse 2 staterooms (114 total) are all double-occupancy Suites in total 14 categories. Cabin sizes range between 345 ft2 / 32 m2 (Veranda Suite) to 2745 ft2 / 255 m2 (2-Bedroom Penthouse Suite, with included 645 ft2 / 60 m2 wraparound terrace). Owners Penthouse Suites are sized 1990 ft2 / 185 m2 (balcony included). Each cabin has a private step-out balcony. The vessel has an almost 1:1 passenger-to-crew ratio and each stateroom are served by a dedicated butler.

The boat has 10 decks , of which 8 are passenger-accessible and 5 with cabins.

Four Lifts (midship-located Elevators) interconnect all cabin decks.

Shipboard facilities

Other features and all-inclusive amenities include:

  • 9 restaurants (including Asian Fusion, steakhouse, seafood, contemporary French and Italian venues, poolside grill, 24/7 room service
  • four bars and lounges
  • 240-seat Theater Lounge
  • 2 (indoor and outdoor) swimming pools
  • heated pool (indoor, with retractable glass roof)

Senses SPA (5900 ft2 / 550 m2) is the wellness complex with a heated indoor pool, outdoor Jacuzzies, plunge pools (temperature-controlled), treatment rooms (for massages), male and female areas, Hair Salon, Nail Studio (manicure/pedicure), Sauna Rooms, Steam Rooms, an outdoor terrace (with padded loungers), Aerobics Studio (for Yoga and Pilates), Gym (fitted with premium-brand fitness equipment). In comparison to Eclipse 1, Eclipse 2's steam room area is larger/expanded and features an aromatherapy room, ice fountain, experience showers (water at different temperatures and intensities, a KLAFS salt therapy lounge (with infrared chairs/color light therapy).

In comparison to Scenic Eclipse 1, Scenic Eclipse 2's swimming pool and sundeck (Deck 10) are larger-sized. There is also a new poolside bar (with indoor-outdoor seating) and the swimming pool is oval-shaped.

Scenic yacht cruise deals are inclusive of butler service (regardless of cabin category), flights, all tips/gratuities, Discovery Team leaders (professional tour guides on all cruise itineraries), shore excursions (all land tours and organized events at ports of call and beaches along the itinerary route, expert-led Scenic Free choice activities, discovery excursions by Zodiacs / large-capacity inflatable boats), onboard dining (all dining venues are complimentary / fee-free), onboard entertainment, e-biking, water sports (sea kayaking, snorkeling, scuba diving), premium beverages (at bars and cabin mini-bars).

The ship has "zero speed stabilizer fins" (50% larger than typical on a similar-sized vessel) allowing it to navigate in rough seas with just little movement. Voyages to Antarctica include passing Drake Passage - a notoriously rough waterway between South America and Antarctica.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Scenic Eclipse 2 Wiki

The Malta- flagged vessel Scenic Eclipse II (IMO number 9850460) was designed with the latest technological advancements in order to ensure the highest safety standards. It has custom-built fin stabilizers (50% bigger than on other vessels with similar GT tonnage) and an ice-strengthened hull.

The yacht's state-of-the-art fins are able to adjust themselves, enabling the boat to handle the strongest water currents and to remain stable. Unlike other ships that use traditional anchors, Scenic's mega-yachts are fitted with a dynamic positioning system. It uses GPS data to accurately maintain the ship's position - an eco-friendly way to control the vessel. The other environmentally sustainable systems implemented are efficient marine engines and advanced water treatment system.

The ship's integrated navigation and automation/control system was provided by the company Kongsberg Maritime. This modern technology combines the following systems - Navigation, Dynamic Positioning, automation, Emergency Shutdown, Power Management, Safety Management, and Control. The system is integrated with online diagnostics and remote service facilities.

Both vessels operated by Scenic Yacht Cruises are owned by Scenic Group and Croatia-built - Eclipse 1 in Pula (Uljanik Shipyard), Eclipse 2 in Rijeka (3 Maj Shipyard). Eclipse 2 yacht's construction officially started on April 24, 2020, with the steel-cutting ceremony held at Rijeka's 3 Maj Shipyard (Treci Maj Brodogradiliste).

With Eclipse 2, Scenic Group established a new fully-owned subsidiary company (MKM Yachts) that manages newbuilds' construction. In late-April 2020 Scenic Group also announced plans to build in Croatia 5x new superyachts in the next 6 years. For these shipbuilding projects was dedicated a separate section at Rijeka's Maj 3 Shipyard. In early-July 2020, MKM Yachts was granted a sub-concession at Rijeka's shipyard. This way, the company became the prime contractor for all Scenic Group's newbuilds.

In August 2020, Scenic Group (shipowner) contracted Viking Crew (part of the Dover UK -based Viking Maritime Group Ltd) as the vessel's crew managing company. Viking Crew is responsible for the Scenic Eclipse 2 yacht's crew recruitment, management, deployment and placement, including officers and staff-crew from the onboard Engine, Hotel and Deck departments. Viking Crew was also contracted for the crew management of the superyachts Scenic Eclipse 1 (2019) and Emerald Azzurra (2021).

The vessel's construction officially started with the keel-laying ceremony held on May 12, 2021, at Rijeka's Maj 3 Shipyard. The special event was attended by Glen Moroney (Scenic Group's founder, owner and Chairman), Andrej Plenkovic (Croatia's Prime Minister), Tomislav Coric (Croatia's Minister of Economy and Sustainable Development) and Oleg Butkovic (Croatia's Minister of Maritime Affairs, Transport and Infrastructure).

The superyacht was launched/floated out from drydock on June 25, 2022. The ceremony was attended by Glen Moroney.

In December 2022, Anna Wolfsteiner (Scenic Group's Chief Sales & Marketing Officer) announced the name of the ship's godmother - Kathryn Dwyer Sullivan (1951-born American scientist/geologist and oceanographer, and a former US Navy officer and NASA astronaut).

The Adriatic Sea trials were in two phases and successfully conducted in February-March 2023. The superyacht was officially delivered on April 6, 2023, when it left the Croatian shipyard. The delivery ceremony was attended by VIP guests like Andrej Plenkovic (Croatia's Prime Minister), Sasa Cokljat (Managing Director MKM Yachts), Glen Moroney (Scenic Group's Owner, Founder and Chairman). In April 6-13th started the relocation voyage around Italy (from Rijeka to Lisbon) from where started the 11-day Maiden Voyage ("Incredible Iberian Discovery" itinerary, Lisbon to Barcelona).

Scenic Eclipse II's christening ceremony was on June 3, 2023, held dockside in Port Malaga (Spain) during the 10-day voyage from Barcelona to Lisbon. The official naming ceremony was led by godmother Kathryn Sullivan and attended by Glen Moroney, travel industry professionals, media representatives, VIP guests (Dutch dignitaries and government officials) as well as the current voyage's passengers.

The following YouTube video is a timelapse of the Scenic yachts construction process.

In late-September 2021 Scenic Group contracted Triton Submarines for the construction of a new-design submersible for the Eclipse 2 yacht.

  • The Scenic-Triton deal was for the construction of one submarine (model "Triton 660-9 AVA". The submersible has max capacity 8 passengers (plus the pilot), max operating depth 200 m (660 ft), patented hull design (elliptically shaped,metallic-acrylic).
  • The long-term agreement was signed by Rob Voss (Scenic Group's COO) and Patrick Lahey (Triton Submarines' President).
  • The Vero Beach Florida-based Triton Submarines specializes in designing and manufacturing of commercial and privately-owned submersibles. These vessels are usually used for scientific researches, filming, as well as equipment for private superyachts and smaller-sized cruise ships. The company has a fully-owned subsidiary in Barcelona Spain (Triton Submarines EMEA).
  • In 2017, Triton started (via partnership with Aston Martin) the ultra-luxury submarine project "Neptune". The new model "Triton 1650-3 Low Profile" mini-sub was designed after Aston Martin's Valkyrie (aka "Nebula"/limited production hybrid sports car) and features improved hydrodynamics and more powerful propulsion system/thrusters.

In January 2022, Scenic Group contracted De Wave Group (global contractor for cruise ships and superyacht interiors) for Eclipse 2's outfitting. By the contract, De Wave Group provided and installed all the 114 staterooms (including cabin bathrooms), passenger decks' hallways/corridors, all crew deck areas (including crew cabins and hallways), all dining venues, catering areas and storage rooms (galleys/kitchens, cold rooms).

Inside the $318 Million Ultra-Luxury Scenic Eclipse II

W hen you think of a cruise, I bet you’re probably thinking of a monstrous, oversized party boat loaded with spiralling waterslides, silent discos, and large groups wearing matching t-shirts. If that’s your vibe, by all means, pop off. But if luxury travel is more your beat, you’ll find none of that on board the ultra-luxury ‘6-star’ discovery yacht, the Scenic Eclipse II.

The $318 million ‘giga-yacht’ is the second of its kind from Scenic Cruises. It is currently sailing its inaugural trip around Australia, embarking on a two-year series of voyages in the Oceania region. What sets the Scenic Eclipse II apart is not only its elevated sense of luxury at every touch point, but its ability to offer guests unique expedition experiences in some of the earth’s untapped regions.

After leaving Sydney Harbour in a Scenic Eclipse II hosting a series of discovery voyages exploring the stunning Kimberley, Top End, Eastern, and Western coastlines of Australia. Guests on board will be able to enjoy unrivalled exploration with the yacht housing two on-board helicopters, a suite of coastline Zodiacs, and an electric submersible,  Scenic Neptune II  – which can transport up to eight guests and dives up to 200 metres below the surface, providing 270-degree panoramic views.

Scenic Eclipse II caters to only up to 228 guests with an impressive 1:1 crew-to-guest ratio, allowing for a true personalised, all-inclusive service. I was fortunate enough to spend a night on board the ship as it sailed out of Sydney Harbour for the first time and made its way up to Newcastle. Here is an inside look at everything you’ll find onboard the ultra-luxury discovery yacht.

Table of contents

All-inclusive premium whiskey bar, world class fine dining, luxury rooms, unique expeditions & discover tours, state-of-the-art submersible, a trip of a lifetime around australia, is the scenic eclipse ii for you, how much does it cost.

With over 135 premium bottles in its elegant lounge, Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours’ Eclipse II is the first Australian expedition to cater to whisky enthusiasts. The bar features a diverse selection from major whiskey-producing regions worldwide with a stunning bar-display fully stocked with top-shelf bottles.

Highlights include Hakushu Japanese single malt, age-statement scotches from Mortlach, Dalmore, and Springbank, prized Irish labels like Redbreast and Green Spot, and exclusive American offerings such as WhistlePig rye and Eagle Rare bourbon. Even unique whiskies from Sweden, India, and Taiwan are available. The best part is that they’re all-inclusive. So, no one is stopping you from sitting at the bar and working your way through the top-shelf bottles (responsibly, of course).

You wouldn’t be able to call this an ‘ultra-luxury yacht’ without world-class dining to match. On board, there are up to 10 unique dining experiences with a range of flavours and cuisines with menus curated to reflect the region they are sailing in. From a Sushi & Sake Bar to a more casual Yacht Club and an all-inclusive In-Suite dining – one thing’s for sure: guests will never be hungry with this all-inclusive service.

During my time on board, I was lucky enough to dine at the invitation-only Night Market @ Koko’s, which is an intimate and interactive Teppanyaki-style experience inspired by the lively night markets of Asia. Set around a bar-style table, the chef prepares dishes right in front of you, all while telling unique stories behind the cuisine. My dining experience was led by the charismatic and talented chef Strawberry Gutierrez, who prepared a delectable Filipino degustation, highlighting key Filipino flavours in a way I’ve never experienced before.

The rooms and suites on the Scenic Eclipse II are surprisingly spacious and designed to be an indulgent haven for guests. For anyone who’s been on a commercial cruise before, the rooms are often quite tight and designed to mainly just rest after a big day availing of all the ship’s activities. However, the rooms on board the Scenic Eclipse II are designed to be a truly luxurious retreat and are generously spacious, and furnished with the finest amenities.

Inside, you’ll find a fully stocked mini-bar with your choice of drinks, a Nespresso machine, premium bedding and electronic controls, a spacious walk-in closet, and an exceptionally large in-room safe. All 114 suites from entry-level to top-tier are balcony suites with floor areas ranging from 32 to 240 square metres. Even in the entry-level suites, a curtain separates the sleeping area from the living space, ensuring privacy. Blackout curtains ensure a peaceful night’s sleep, even during Midnight Sun conditions.

The larger suites aboard the Scenic Eclipse II elevate luxury to new heights, resembling upscale hotels rather than typical cruise ship accommodations. For instance, the Spa Suites feature a Philippe Starck-designed bathtub, while the Panorama Suites boast separate bedrooms, living areas, and dining spaces.

As for the pinnacle of indulgence, the Owner’s Penthouse Suites offer a lavish retreat spanning 2,098 square feet. Here, you’ll enjoy exclusive amenities such as your own outdoor Jacuzzi, a dining table accommodating eight, an expansive bathroom, and unrivalled views. Keep an eye out on our social feeds for a Suite Spot episode, where we take you inside the Owner’s Penthouse Suite.

What sets Scenic Cruises apart from your average holiday cruise ship is that it offers guests a range of unique discovery experiences. Whether it’s submarine diving to observe underwater wonders, scenic helicopter flights over the Kimberly, or intimate Zodiac excursions through Antarctic ice caps. The ship’s expert Discovery Team guides guests through each adventure, ensuring insightful and enriching experiences. The Scenic Eclipse II is equipped with two resident Airbus H130 helicopters, a fleet of Mark V Zodiac boats, and a one-of-a-kind submersible that is capable dive to depths of up to 300 metres (984 feet) and accommodating up to six guests plus a pilot.

Unlike your average tour guide on a cruise, what sets Scenic Discovery Cruises apart is their highly experienced and knowledgeable ‘Discovery Team’ made of up to 15 experts and specialists, along with local guides, to provide guests with deep insights and safely guide you throughout the journey.  The expertise of members of the Discovery Teams spans fields like history, biology, archaeology, naturalism, geology, and photography, so guests can be confident they’re in good hands while out on an expedition.

This cutting-edge vessel, aptly named the ‘Scenic Neptune II’, plunges guests into the depths of the ocean, offering an intimate and immersive underwater experience. With its advanced capabilities, the Scenic Neptune II can dive to depths of up to 300 metres, offering guests panoramic views of vibrant coral reefs, marine life, and underwater landscapes. Guided by experienced pilots, these submersible excursions offer a rare opportunity to explore the ocean’s depths.

Speaking to one of the Neptune II pilots, he says “It’s brand new but we have been diving it in French Polynesia on the way over here. We had sharks, sting rays, and all kinds of fish, we had a reef wall that was down 100m. It was just teaming full of life.”

Rest assured, the vessel undergoes rigorous testing and certification to ensure compliance with industry standards and regulations. Upon taking a close look myself on a ship tour, I can confirm there were no Logitech controllers in sight.

The Scenic Eclipse II sailed out of Sydney Harbour spectacularly on 21 April 2024, with cruise director, Natalie Sexton treating guests to a vocal medley of beautiful musical numbers as the vessel passed under the Harbour Bridge and beside the Sydney Opera House during sunset. Out of the Harbour, the luxury yacht begins its inaugural expedition of the remarkable coastline of Australia. The journey begins with a series of discovery voyages along the East Coast, featuring highlights such as the Great Barrier Reef, Fraser Island, and iconic destinations like Gladstone and Magnetic Island.

From there, the ship will continue to the Northern Territory, exploring the rugged beauty of the Kimberley region, including the Hunter River, Montgomery Reef, and Talbot Bay.

In 2025, the Scenic Eclipse II will navigate the Western Australian coast before venturing further to destinations in the South Pacific, Southeast Asia, Japan, South Korea, New Zealand, and the remote East Antarctica and Ross Sea regions.

Scenic Eclipse expeditions tend to attract a discerning and adventurous clientele. This unique crowd appreciates the finest luxuries while seeking extraordinary experiences that go beyond the offerings of a typical cruise. Many of the guests are well-off retirees who are eager to explore the farthest reaches of the earth, combining their passion for travel with a taste for sophisticated elegance. Speaking to director of Discovery Operations, Jason Flesher, about who the Scenic Eclipse II is for, he says “Probably 40 per cent retired guests, but then a good 60 per cent are still very active. Age, anywhere from 30s on up, average age, around 50, 55 or so.”

“So it’s really for the guests that prefer to have a place to come back to, that luxurious ship, and then at the same time be able to have that luxury, ultra-luxury excursions off the ship as well. So we’ve figured out how to manage both on and off the ship.”

The cost of a cruise on the Scenic Eclipse II varies widely depending on the itinerary, duration, and suite selection. Prices for shorter, regional voyages can start at approximately AUD$15,000 per person, while longer, more exotic expeditions, such as trips to Antarctica or the South Pacific, can range upwards of AUD 50,000 per person. These fares typically include all meals, drinks, excursions, and even gratuities, providing a truly all-inclusive luxury experience.
