Please don't bother Jeff Bezos on vacation

  • Jeff Bezos has been spending a lot of time on his $500 million mega-yacht, Koru.
  • Koru recently made a stop at Antigua in the Caribbean.
  • Local officials have asked the public to give the billionaire some privacy.

Insider Today

Jeff Bezos' yacht is such a spectacle to behold that local authorities have had to ask the public to give the billionaire some privacy while he's on vacation .

The Amazon founder and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez recently docked at Falmouth Harbour in Antigua and Barbuda aboard Koru , a 417-feet-long, $500 million megayacht that requires a crew of about 40 people to manage, local outlets reported on Tuesday.

People on the island of Antigua have taken notice of the world's largest sailing yacht , prompting Antigua and Barbuda's Minister of Tourism Charles Fernandez to issue a notice to the locals.

Related stories

"The allure of the Koru is undeniable, but we kindly ask for everyone's understanding and utmost respect for their privacy during this special time," Fernandez said, according to Antigua Observer .

Bezos does appreciate the solitude.

In October 2021, he purchased a home in an isolated part of Maui's south shore for $78 million . The 14-acre estate is surrounded by even more acrage of dormant lava fields.

"Jeff and Lauren love Maui, have a home on the island, visit frequently, and want to be a part of supporting the local community," an unnamed source close to the couple told Pacific Business News .

Before that, Bezos broke a California record by purchasing a $165-million estate built by Warner Bros. cofounder Jack Warner in 1937. The Beverly Hills estate provides privacy with tall hedges that hide the home from the street.

He then purchased a $10 million home next door in a sign that the tech founder was building a compound — just typical billionaire things .

Even in the way he conducts his businesses, from Amazon to Blue Origin, Bezos has cherished privacy, keeping some of the company projects secret for years, The Washington Post reported.

So, we may never know what goes on aboard the Koru.

Must be nice, though.

As the world’s tallest sailing yacht, the Koru, owned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, graces Falmouth Harbour, Tourism Minister Charles Fernandez has emphasised the need for privacy for the high-profile visitor and his wife during their vacation. https://t.co/FSIaEqfPXZ pic.twitter.com/7zNOwWQKzh — Antigua Observer by NewsCo Ltd (@ByNewsCo) December 27, 2023

Koru is a 127-metre sailing yacht currently delivered from Oceanco in the Netherlands. Reportedly commissioned for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , the superyacht is a three-masted schooner built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The yacht is the world’s largest sailing yacht and the longest yacht built in the Netherlands. The yacht was constructed at Oceanco’s Alblasserdam facilities and later moved to Rotterdam where she waited to complete sea trials at a dock in Eemhaven.

The yacht was delivered to Mallorca in April 2023. The price of Koru has never been disclosed. She is expected to have a gross tonnage of 3300 GT. The yacht is powered by kinetic energy generated by the sails, but like most sailing yachts, she will have engine power as well.

She will join five other Oceanco yachts measuring over 100 metres and ten other superyachts built in the Netherlands measuring over 100 metres.

Koru main features

Koru has a navy hull, red bootstripe, and double-deck wooden coach house. Her profile is characterised by a long bowsprit and a classic canoe stern which will provide enhanced privacy while the yacht is in port. There is also a sizeable dip pool visible on the aft, as well as a crow’s nest on the mizzenmast.

Koru and the De Hef bridge

In 2021, the yacht was the subject of considerable controversy when it emerged that the historic Koningshaven Bridge, also known by the name De Hef, would need to be dismantled to allow the masts to pass under. However, in August 2022, one of the yacht’s masts was seen being transported along the Nieuwe Maas to be stepped elsewhere and the bridge remained untouched. The height of the mainmast is thought to be between 65 and 85 metres.

Koru's secondary yacht

Koru will be accompanied by a support vessel which is thought to be built by Damen Yachting, another Dutch yachtbuilder, which specialises in ocean-going shadow vessels and explorer yachts This yacht will be used to carry toys, tenders and additional crew.

In 2019, there were a number of rumours speculating that Lürrsen’s 136 metre Flying Fox was built for Jeff Bezos; however an Amazon spokesperson refuted the claims.

About KORU , brought to you by BOAT Pro

KORU, a 125.82 m Sail Yacht built in Netherlands and delivered in 2023, is the flagship of Oceanco .

Her power comes from two MTU diesel engines. She can accommodate up to 18 guests in 9 staterooms, with 36 crew members. She has a gross tonnage of 3493.0 GT and a 16.95 m beam.

She was designed by Dykstra Naval Architects , who has designed 20 other superyachts in the BOAT Pro database.

The naval architecture was developed by Lateral Naval Architects (6 other superyachts architected) and Dykstra Naval Architects (28 other superyachts architected), and the interior of the yacht was designed by Mlinaric, Henry & Zervudachi , who has 4 other superyacht interiors designed in the BOAT Pro database - she is built with a Teak deck, a Steel hull, and Aluminium superstructure.

KORU is in the top 5% by LOA in the world. She is one of 4 sailing yachts longer than 100m.

KORU is currently sailing under the Cayman Islands flag, the 2nd most popular flag state for superyachts with a total of 1401 yachts registered. She is known to be an active superyacht and has most recently been spotted cruising near Greece. For more information regarding KORU's movements, find out more about BOAT Pro AIS .

Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Koru, a very large sailboat with three masts and a dark navy hull, sails on a calm blue sea.

By Kevin Koenig

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

The World’s 2nd Largest Sailing Yacht, Built by Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos, is Currently Here

jeff bezos yacht antigua

You know you live in an amazing place when the world’s 2nd largest, newly-built sailing yacht chooses your backyard as its first vacation destination in the United States.

Koru is a 416-foot sailing yacht that was commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. It reportedly cost $500 million to build and is accompanied by Abeona, its 246-foot support vessel. Both boats are currently anchored near Mingo Cay, which is roughly a five-minute boat ride from Cruz Bay. This is the same area where The Rising Sun, David Geffen’s 453-foot mega yacht, spent time last month. (Click here to read that story.)

Koru, a Maori word meaning “new beginnings”, is the largest boat ever built in the Netherlands. It was delivered in April and spent time in the Mediterranean before making the 4,400-mile crossing to the United States. It arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on November 22nd where it was forced to dock in a seaport beside oil tankers and a cruise ship due to its massive size. It arrived in St. Thomas on December 5th and spent five days in Charlotte Amalie before sailing over to us.

Koru is reportedly one of the most ecological megayachts in the world due to its sails and technology on board.

Abeona, its “dinghy”, will serve as a support boat, essentially a toy hauler. It will carry luxury cars, smaller boats, a helicopter, and additional crew.

jeff bezos yacht antigua

Is this boat excessive? Yes. Did many of us shop way too often on Amazon, which in a way contributed to its creation? Yes. However it is a beautifully-designed sailboat, and it’s pretty darn cool that they chose to come here for their first vacation on this side of the world. Those of us who call St. John home are pretty darn lucky, and those of you who are able to visit this beautiful island are pretty darn lucky too.

Have a beautiful day everyone, and a big thanks to Palm Tree Charters for these great pics.

Antiguans are not star stuck and I have never heard of any incident of persons not giving celebrities, high profile or A listers their privacy when they visit, so not sure why the need for this WARNING! from disrespect of privacy, details divulging and intrusion?

Is they the ones who are star struck, fighting the urge to push up themselves in the man and woman private space 😄 probably thinking of a way to make the Bezos’ Ambassadors for A&B…

@Natasha It’s reverse psychology. They are star struck, and probably trying to figure out how to get money.

They want to go beg in peace only them should be close up 😁😁😁you are so right writer above…. Antiguans not frightened about celebrities. There are more pressing issues plaguing our country than the focus on Mr. Bezos and his dear beautiful wife.

U ever see how they act when those dancehall stars are on island? Many, especially females, have been accused of seducing and robbong some of these stars. So u all quit with the crap talk about Antiguans arent star struck. Some are and it also depends on the celebrity.

Will the government give Bezos his privacy? I bet you will hear the PM says that it is his friend and they met and he will invest millions in opening up an Amazon distribution center in Antigua and Liat 2020 could transport the cargo to the relative countries within the OECS

Deeemmmm you know real good the situation with the pm

Max Fernandez,if you have nothing to say just shut your arse up.Celebrities have been coming into Antigua for decades. No one gives to dungs, who cometh or goeth. The people like to buy from Amazon. That does not mean they are fond of Bezos. He is not even involve in the day to day operations of AMAZON.

We are well accustoned to seeing expensive yachts in our harbours, whether they is at the Nelson’s Dockyard or at Falmouth Harbour. If the powers that be didn’t bring this particular vessel and owner to the publics attention, we would have just passed this off like we have passed off all the other visiting vessels. The luxury yacht, the cost and its owner was deliberately publicized for public relation purposes.

You hit the nail on the head

@Audley Phillip December 26, 2023 At 10:07 pm https://antiguanewsroom.com/jeff-bezos-500-million-koru-worlds-largest-sailing-yacht-docks-in-falmouth-harbour/ Was it the government that put out this article on the 24th of December? Don’t lose your objectivity because you want to sound relevant. Obviously the minister is reacting to those socalled. Real News reporters whi fly drones illegally in this country only to have news to put on Social Media.

F**k Max and whomever. Trupz.

🌊⛱️🏝️🏝️#Spliff time!🦶🏿🦶🏿

The idiot is the problem. Privacy means mind you damn government business, shut you damn mouth and let privacy reign. A you de Minister a talk out de man business😳

We are accustomed of seeing hundreds of Mega yachts owned by celebrities docked up here to inc that of Opera Winfrey and so what is the difference with Jeff’ ‘s..Pleaseeee Chupz.. making it a news item only cauaing more attention. ..chupz chat too much

Mr Bezoz is back in the US his yacht is here.

https://www.tmz.com/2023/12/25/jeff-bezos-lauren-sanchez-nature-stroll-walk-christmas-eve-miami-family/

Seems like Mr. Max is the one who is awe struck by the passing visit of Bozos and his Yacht . I’ve watched it enter and egress my native swimming pool without battling an eye: as I see no tangible effect impacting on my local community of Falmouth 🇦🇬 English Harbour as the spinoff from all the reptilian visitors and Trojans vessels that struts in at winter’s time to frolic in my pristine abode. There should be an anchorage tax derived from all visiting yachts deposited solely for the benefit of Falmouth 🇦🇬 English Harbour indigenous people’s enhancement. It is not that the yachting folks don’t spending: ((I’m quite sure that they do) but for the fact of their conscious bird-of-a-feathers mindset syndrome that benefit the interloper’s at the expense of the local entrepreneurs; who only offer rental spaces, and no direct cash flow services except for “liquor and groceries” at expense that the locals must complete, and are saddled with at the end of their winter’s respite retreat. Ah! It’s just a photo-opt for myself, and many indigenous; who don’t beg for anything but good health and fair weather.

While the GOAB is asking the public to give Mr. Bezos and his wife their privacy It’s unfortunate that the Tourism Minister is so out of touch.

Ms. Sanchez is not his wife.

Secondly, these type of yatch owners have their boats ferried in by the crew ahead of themselves except in places where their private planes isn’t able to land.

The GOAB promotes high end tourism and how no clue how these people live.

It was Government officials who were nuff and edge up with Angela Bassett which ended in a fiasco. Maybe the warning should be directed to them. Antigua and Barbuda working class are more concerned with making ends meet, not celebrity gazing.

De Niro is on Barbuda right now. Does anyone care?

@dwaine !!!!! You nailed it buddy!!!!! You nailed it .. Antiguans aren’t so backwards .. we see celebrities all the time .. while overseas , while traveling .. we leave them well alone … so the gov needs to calm down.. they seem backwards and out of touch !!!

Not only nobody cares that he is in barbuda…..couple of years ago he invited every barbudan to his birthday…….only ONE person showed up!! Lol

If max never say any thing I would not even know how the man look I guess his shit smell better than mine is he just a man like all The rest of you money means nothing ask the Steve job man about money

Max is obviously out of touch with Antigua and Barbuda. In fact, Max is out of touch, period. When this man talks, most of what he says is just nothing. Has tourism made any strides under this clown? Most of the tourist attractions are in need of a face-lift. Antiguans and Barbudans have NEVER been starstruck. You would think Max should know this.

Wowww So much for Privacy! The ordinary Antiguan doesn’t give a flying “F” about Jeff Bezos!!! What a Fawking Joke!!!!

White man Max believes that we likkle black people don’t know how to behave. Maybe he is afraid that we so hard up under this Labour party government that we will go beggie beggie to Bezos and embarrass him and his high society friends and colleagues. This is what Max really thinks about us indigenous Antiguans!!!

The Government press release is a day late and a dollar short. Bezos’ yacht pulled out Christmas Day.

What is Tourism Minister talking about, he thinks Jeff Bezos us a God?

Bezos's Maritime Disappearing Act: How A $500 Million Yacht Goes Dark

How do you make a $500 million sailing yacht disappear? If you are Jeff Bezos , you turn off the ship's tracking system.

Bezos's 417-foot yacht Koru is no longer transmitting location data, with the last location ping noted on July 19 near Sardinia, Italy. The system that is no longer functioning is the automatic identification system (AIS), a standard feature on ships over a certain size.

An AIS data tracker sends and receives information about a ship's course and navigation. It improves at-sea safety by enabling vessels to share information with each other and with stations on shore. When turned on, the AIS data transmits a range of data such as the yacht's name, position, speed, heading and other points. It also receives nearby vessel information that is displayed on the navigation system, helping captains maintain safe distances and follow maritime travel regulations.

When You Need A Support Ship For Your Yacht

Bezos's disappearing act extends to another ship. The mega-rich that operate yachts of this scale sometimes need a support ship . Bezos operates a 246-foot ship called Abeona that follows Koru from port to port. It offers extra space for crew members, a helipad and additional supplies that passengers and crew might require on their journeys. The ship is a yacht in its own right and carries many of the water toys that do not fit on the massive Koru sailing vessel.

Koru features an array of lavish comforts, including multiple decks, lounges, a swimming pool and a movie theater. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, built by esteemed yacht builder Oceanco beginning in 2021 with delivery in April 2023. It offers Bezos and his frequent traveler partner and fiancée Lauren Sanchez a spacious gym and spa area along with opulent meeting areas and lounges.

Billionaires Looking To Travel Anonymously

AIS trackers help captains and crew avoid collisions, giving them a chance to take evasive actions based on location and heading data. It integrates with most yacht navigation systems and highlights AIS data on charts so ship operators can make optimal navigation decisions. Emergency responders and rescue operators also rely on AIS tracking data to respond effectively to emergencies, so they can make the right course toward a ship that needs help.

In 2022, several Russian oligarch yacht owners turned off their AIS systems to avoid sanctions and scrutiny after Russian forces invaded Ukraine. In late 2022, Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH and one of the richest people in the world, sold his private jet, with reports stating he did so out of frustration with people tracking his flights and sharing the journeys through social media.

Bezos, founder of Amazon.com, Inc. , frequently travels on his yacht. He is not under scrutiny but likely grew tired of the attention his massive yacht and support ship attract. Despite these efforts, a nearly 500-foot three-masted yacht is hard to miss. Many people on social media channels report the ship's locations as it travels around the world.
