Jeff Bezos' yacht is such a spectacle to behold that local authorities have had to ask the public to give the billionaire some privacy while he's on vacation .

The Amazon founder and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez recently docked at Falmouth Harbour in Antigua and Barbuda aboard Koru , a 417-feet-long, $500 million megayacht that requires a crew of about 40 people to manage, local outlets reported on Tuesday.

People on the island of Antigua have taken notice of the world's largest sailing yacht , prompting Antigua and Barbuda's Minister of Tourism Charles Fernandez to issue a notice to the locals.

"The allure of the Koru is undeniable, but we kindly ask for everyone's understanding and utmost respect for their privacy during this special time," Fernandez said, according to Antigua Observer .

Bezos does appreciate the solitude.

In October 2021, he purchased a home in an isolated part of Maui's south shore for $78 million . The 14-acre estate is surrounded by even more acrage of dormant lava fields.

"Jeff and Lauren love Maui, have a home on the island, visit frequently, and want to be a part of supporting the local community," an unnamed source close to the couple told Pacific Business News .

Before that, Bezos broke a California record by purchasing a $165-million estate built by Warner Bros. cofounder Jack Warner in 1937. The Beverly Hills estate provides privacy with tall hedges that hide the home from the street.

He then purchased a $10 million home next door in a sign that the tech founder was building a compound — just typical billionaire things .

Even in the way he conducts his businesses, from Amazon to Blue Origin, Bezos has cherished privacy, keeping some of the company projects secret for years, The Washington Post reported.

So, we may never know what goes on aboard the Koru.

Koru is a 127-metre sailing yacht currently delivered from Oceanco in the Netherlands. Reportedly commissioned for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos , the superyacht is a three-masted schooner built with a steel hull and aluminium superstructure. The yacht is the world’s largest sailing yacht and the longest yacht built in the Netherlands. The yacht was constructed at Oceanco’s Alblasserdam facilities and later moved to Rotterdam where she waited to complete sea trials at a dock in Eemhaven.

The yacht was delivered to Mallorca in April 2023. The price of Koru has never been disclosed. She is expected to have a gross tonnage of 3300 GT. The yacht is powered by kinetic energy generated by the sails, but like most sailing yachts, she will have engine power as well.

She will join five other Oceanco yachts measuring over 100 metres and ten other superyachts built in the Netherlands measuring over 100 metres.

Koru main features

Koru has a navy hull, red bootstripe, and double-deck wooden coach house. Her profile is characterised by a long bowsprit and a classic canoe stern which will provide enhanced privacy while the yacht is in port. There is also a sizeable dip pool visible on the aft, as well as a crow’s nest on the mizzenmast.

Koru and the De Hef bridge

In 2021, the yacht was the subject of considerable controversy when it emerged that the historic Koningshaven Bridge, also known by the name De Hef, would need to be dismantled to allow the masts to pass under. However, in August 2022, one of the yacht’s masts was seen being transported along the Nieuwe Maas to be stepped elsewhere and the bridge remained untouched. The height of the mainmast is thought to be between 65 and 85 metres.

Koru's secondary yacht

Koru will be accompanied by a support vessel which is thought to be built by Damen Yachting, another Dutch yachtbuilder, which specialises in ocean-going shadow vessels and explorer yachts This yacht will be used to carry toys, tenders and additional crew.

In 2019, there were a number of rumours speculating that Lürrsen’s 136 metre Flying Fox was built for Jeff Bezos; however an Amazon spokesperson refuted the claims.

Jeff Bezos’ New Yacht Is Finally Ready to Set Sail

Amazon’s founder has been spotted on Koru, a massive schooner with a design that evokes the golden age of sailing in the early 20th century.

Just in time for the high season of yachting in the Mediterranean, when multimillion-dollar megayachts descend on ports like Monte Carlo and St. Tropez, Jeff Bezos, the founder of Amazon, has been photographed with his partner Lauren Sánchez on his new boat, Koru, off the coast of Spain.

Mr. Bezos’ vessel is a sailing yacht, a departure from the diesel-powered, floating palaces popular with other billionaires. But it is still massive. At 417 feet, Koru is the world’s largest sailing yacht, according to Boat International , and it cost an estimated $500 million to build, Bloomberg reported . (Parsifal III, the boat featured on Bravo’s reality series “Below Deck Sailing Yacht,” is 177 feet long — less than half the length of Koru — and cost $18 million , according to the website SuperYachtFan.)

A spokesperson for Mr. Bezos did not comment for this article; neither did Oceanco, Koru’s builder. Here is what to know about the boat.

For traditionalists, Koru is refreshing. At a time when yacht design skews outrageous — see the lizardlike, 262-foot Artefact or the otherworldly 463-foot Yas — Koru stands out as a schooner, a sailing vessel with two or more masts. Photos reveal a large sailboat with three masts, an on-deck pool and a voluptuous mermaid on the bow, that bears a resemblance to Ms. Sánchez. But otherwise, the sleek, classic lines suggest the patrician age of yachting in the early 20th century, said Robert B. MacKay, author of “The Golden Age of Newport Yachting: Between the Wars.”

“With the clipper bow and the dark hull and the masts,” Mr. MacKay said, referring to Koru’s concave, pointy forward section, “it reminds me of a boat built in 1930 for J.P. Morgan Jr., Corsair IV. It is almost like a reincarnation. It’s certainly at odds with the stuff the oligarchs are building — those look like bloated Clorox bottles.”

Compared with the world’s very largest motor yachts — built for sheer size and the accompanying bragging rights — Koru could almost be considered quaint. Azzam, one of the world’s largest motor yachts, is nearly 200 feet longer.

The Experience

Koru will be propelled primarily by the wind. “Sailboats are usually greener than most powerboats,” said Don Anderson, a former captain of M5 , the world’s largest single-masted sailboat, at 256 feet. “I’d like to think that Koru will be one of the most ecological yachts out there, with its sails and also with the technology that will be aboard.”

“When you’re on a sailboat, you’re more in touch with the wind and the waves than on a powerboat,” he continued. “You’re more susceptible to the elements, too. But you can leave California, and once you get past the Catalinas you can basically surf downwind all the way to Hawaii. All you need to do is run with the waves.”

Mr. Bezos has been a guest on similar boats, according to Bloomberg: In 2019, he was spotted on Eos , a 305-foot sailing yacht owned by Barry Diller and Diane von Furstenberg.

Bill Tripp, a Connecticut-based naval architect, said the appeal of this type of boat is clear: “When you are on a powerboat, you ask, ‘Are we there yet?’ and on a sailboat, you’re enjoying the ride and the ocean so much that you don’t ask that question.”

Koru will be trailed by Abeona, a 246-foot support vessel. Superyachts often have support vessels following along behind them. These “shadows,” as they are colloquially known, are for the “toys” — the ATVs, supercars, seaplanes, motorcycles, smaller boats, scuba gear, personal submarines and even helicopters that pleasure boaters might bring on a trip. According to its builder, this model of boat can carry these gadgets along with dozens of crew members. (Ms. Sanchez flies helicopters, and the couple was recently photographed taking a helicopter to board Abeona and then Koru.)

Abeona, a motor yacht, will have enough range to follow Koru from the Mediterranean to the Caribbean — a common course for yachts — on a single tank of gas.

The Kerfuffle

Koru set off a controversy last year — before it was even completed — in a face-off with the Dutch city of Rotterdam. The boat was built at Oceanco’s facility in Alblasserdam, the Netherlands, and needed to pass the historic Koningshaven Bridge, known as “De Hef,” in Rotterdam, to undergo testing in the North Sea.

When the city announced it would dismantle the bridge to allow the boat and its mainmast — an estimated 230 feet tall — to pass through unscathed, locals were angry. They planned a protest to throw eggs at the yacht as it cruised by. In the end, the bridge was not taken apart, and the yacht was towed to a different location to have its masts attached.

Koru is Maori for “coil” or “loop” and refers to the unfurling of a fern frond. The koru design is common in traditional Maori art, where it symbolizes new life, growth and peace. Mr. Bezos included a photo of a koru frond in an Instagram post on Jan. 1, 2022.

Brad Stone, who was the first to report on Koru, in his 2021 book “Amazon Unbound: Jeff Bezos and the Invention of a Global Empire,” said the name was “consistent with where we see him today.”

“He is no longer this single-minded tech guy,” Mr. Stone said. “He’s in media and Hollywood and has a new relationship.”

The World’s 2nd Largest Sailing Yacht, Built by Amazon Founder Jeff Bezos, is Currently Here

You know you live in an amazing place when the world’s 2nd largest, newly-built sailing yacht chooses your backyard as its first vacation destination in the United States.

Koru is a 416-foot sailing yacht that was commissioned by Amazon founder Jeff Bezos. It reportedly cost $500 million to build and is accompanied by Abeona, its 246-foot support vessel. Both boats are currently anchored near Mingo Cay, which is roughly a five-minute boat ride from Cruz Bay. This is the same area where The Rising Sun, David Geffen’s 453-foot mega yacht, spent time last month. (Click here to read that story.)

Koru, a Maori word meaning “new beginnings”, is the largest boat ever built in the Netherlands. It was delivered in April and spent time in the Mediterranean before making the 4,400-mile crossing to the United States. It arrived in Ft. Lauderdale on November 22nd where it was forced to dock in a seaport beside oil tankers and a cruise ship due to its massive size. It arrived in St. Thomas on December 5th and spent five days in Charlotte Amalie before sailing over to us.

Koru is reportedly one of the most ecological megayachts in the world due to its sails and technology on board.

Abeona, its “dinghy”, will serve as a support boat, essentially a toy hauler. It will carry luxury cars, smaller boats, a helicopter, and additional crew.

Is this boat excessive? Yes. Did many of us shop way too often on Amazon, which in a way contributed to its creation? Yes. However it is a beautifully-designed sailboat, and it’s pretty darn cool that they chose to come here for their first vacation on this side of the world. Those of us who call St. John home are pretty darn lucky, and those of you who are able to visit this beautiful island are pretty darn lucky too.

Het is inmiddels alweer bijna een jaar geleden dat Koru, het enorme jacht van Jeff Bezos, voor het eerst op het water gezien werd . En dat betekent dat de hele wereld inmiddels van de foto's, video's en soms zelfs in levenden lijve heeft kunnen genieten van dit 127-meter lange staaltje Nederlands vakmanschap. Het jacht is gebouwd door Oceanco en deed vooral in het begin nogal wat stof opwaaien, vooral bij het 'gewone' volk dat rijksmonument De Hef in Rotterdam liever niet ontmantelt zag worden voor de reus. Maar de vraag is: wat denken de experts uit de wereld van de jachtbouw nu eigenlijk van dit kolossale jacht? Business Insider deed navraag bij verschillende makelaars, jachtbouwers en superjachtexperts.

Het kon ook bijna niet anders maar over het algemeen is iedereen behoorlijk te spreken over dit specifieke werk van Oceanco. "Absoluut beeldschoon" zei Federico Rossi, de COO van luxe jachtbouwer Rossinavi. Een andere expert noemde het jacht "geweldig" en "heel goed gemaakt". Wat vooral verbaasde was het feit dat het jacht, ondanks haar lengte, nog steeds klassiek is: "Toen ik in 2018 hoorde dat er een klassiek zeiljacht van 125 meter gebouwd werd, dacht ik: dat kan nooit een klassiek zeiljacht zijn. Maar dat is het wél." Eerlijk is eerlijk: het jacht vaart voornamelijk op haar motoren en de zeilen zijn voornamelijk voor de show, maar ze heeft zeker de look van een klassiek jacht. In de woorden van een kapitein van megajachten: "Prachtig".

Toch zijn er natuurlijk altijd mensen met een andere mening; sommige mensen vinden het jacht namelijk een beetje too much . Zo vertelt een jachtmakelaar: "Het is echt over de top. Een verschrikkelijk belachelijke boot." Ook een van de experts die over het algemeen te spreken was over het jacht, noemde het royale gebruik van teak aan boord "bizar" en met het oog op duurzaamheid is een enorme hoeveelheid aan teak aan boord natuurlijk ook steeds minder goed te verantwoorden. Al helemaal niet wanneer men ook het geld heeft om te investeren in – misschien duurdere – alternatieven.

Toch is het grote deel van de jachtwereld onder de indruk van het luxe jacht. En met een jachtbouwer als Oceanco kan het ook bijna niet anders. Anders Kurtén, CEO van Fraser Yachts, voegt toe: "Ik ben blij voor de mensen die de mogelijkheid hadden om aan dit jacht te mogen werken."

Antiguans are not star stuck and I have never heard of any incident of persons not giving celebrities, high profile or A listers their privacy when they visit, so not sure why the need for this WARNING! from disrespect of privacy, details divulging and intrusion?

We are well accustoned to seeing expensive yachts in our harbours, whether they is at the Nelson’s Dockyard or at Falmouth Harbour. If the powers that be didn’t bring this particular vessel and owner to the publics attention, we would have just passed this off like we have passed off all the other visiting vessels. The luxury yacht, the cost and its owner was deliberately publicized for public relation purposes.

I’ve watched it enter and egress my native swimming pool without battling an eye: as I see no tangible effect impacting on my local community of Falmouth 🇦🇬 English Harbour as the spinoff from all the reptilian visitors and Trojans vessels that struts in at winter’s time to frolic in my pristine abode. There should be an anchorage tax derived from all visiting yachts deposited solely for the benefit of Falmouth 🇦🇬 English Harbour indigenous people’s enhancement. It is not that the yachting folks don’t spending: ((I’m quite sure that they do) but for the fact of their conscious bird-of-a-feathers mindset syndrome that benefit the interloper’s at the expense of the local entrepreneurs; who only offer rental spaces, and no direct cash flow services except for “liquor and groceries” at expense that the locals must complete, and are saddled with at the end of their winter’s respite retreat. Ah! It’s just a photo-opt for myself, and many indigenous; who don’t beg for anything but good health and fair weather.

While the GOAB is asking the public to give Mr. Bezos and his wife their privacy It’s unfortunate that the Tourism Minister is so out of touch.

Secondly, these type of yatch owners have their boats ferried in by the crew ahead of themselves except in places where their private planes isn’t able to land.

The GOAB promotes high end tourism and how no clue how these people live.

Bezos's Maritime Disappearing Act: How A $500 Million Yacht Goes Dark

How do you make a $500 million sailing yacht disappear? If you are Jeff Bezos , you turn off the ship's tracking system. 

Bezos's 417-foot yacht Koru is no longer transmitting location data, with the last location ping noted on July 19 near Sardinia, Italy. The system that is no longer functioning is the automatic identification system (AIS), a standard feature on ships over a certain size. 

An AIS data tracker sends and receives information about a ship's course and navigation. It improves at-sea safety by enabling vessels to share information with each other and with stations on shore. When turned on, the AIS data transmits a range of data such as the yacht's name, position, speed, heading and other points. It also receives nearby vessel information that is displayed on the navigation system, helping captains maintain safe distances and follow maritime travel regulations.

When You Need A Support Ship For Your Yacht

Bezos's disappearing act extends to another ship. The mega-rich that operate yachts of this scale sometimes need a support ship . Bezos operates a 246-foot ship called Abeona that follows Koru from port to port. It offers extra space for crew members, a helipad and additional supplies that passengers and crew might require on their journeys. The ship is a yacht in its own right and carries many of the water toys that do not fit on the massive Koru sailing vessel.  

Koru features an array of lavish comforts, including multiple decks, lounges, a swimming pool and a movie theater. It is the largest sailing yacht in the world, built by esteemed yacht builder Oceanco beginning in 2021 with delivery in April 2023. It offers Bezos and his frequent traveler partner and fiancée Lauren Sanchez a spacious gym and spa area along with opulent meeting areas and lounges.

Billionaires Looking To Travel Anonymously

AIS trackers help captains and crew avoid collisions, giving them a chance to take evasive actions based on location and heading data. It integrates with most yacht navigation systems and highlights AIS data on charts so ship operators can make optimal navigation decisions. Emergency responders and rescue operators also rely on AIS tracking data to respond effectively to emergencies, so they can make the right course toward a ship that needs help.

In 2022, several Russian oligarch yacht owners turned off their AIS systems to avoid sanctions and scrutiny after Russian forces invaded Ukraine. In late 2022, Bernard Arnault, CEO of LVMH and one of the richest people in the world, sold his private jet, with reports stating he did so out of frustration with people tracking his flights and sharing the journeys through social media. 

Bezos, founder of Amazon.com, Inc. , frequently travels on his yacht. He is not under scrutiny but likely grew tired of the attention his massive yacht and support ship attract. Despite these efforts, a nearly 500-foot three-masted yacht is hard to miss. Many people on social media channels report the ship's locations as it travels around the world.

Getting a yacht has become a status symbol as its picturization in popular culture has shaped the image. Among the ultra-wealthy, superyachts stand as the pinnacle of status symbols, providing exclusive settings for leisure and networking. Tech moguls like Jeff Bezos, Mark Zuckerberg, and Oracle co-founder Larry Ellison have embraced this trend, each owning superyachts that are essentially floating palaces. 1. Mark Zuckerberg

Earlier this year, there were widespread rumors within the yachting community suggesting that Mark Zuckerberg had acquired Launchpad, a 118-meter superyacht initially intended for a sanctioned Russian businessman. The superyacht was bought around the techie's birthday. In March, the vessel embarked on her maiden voyage from Gibraltar to St. Maarten, eventually docking in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. While the exact price tag has not been disclosed, sources suggest it reaches into the nine-figure range. Though not many pictures are available, it is supposedly spacious, as Business Insider reported.

2. Jeffrey Bezos

Last year, Amazon founder Jeff Bezos' $500 million megayacht, the 127-meter Koru, garnered attention as it navigated the Mediterranean during its inaugural summer at sea, accompanied by its 75-meter support vessel, Abeona as reported by Dutch Yachting. This sizable sailing yacht, known for its unique design, hosted Bezos and his fiancée Lauren Sanchez's prominent friends. Even in its pre-completion stage, Koru stirred up headlines, provoking debate among certain members of the Dutch public. Concerns arose when it was proposed that a historic bridge in Rotterdam might need dismantling to accommodate the passage of the Oceanco vessel. The shipyard devised alternative strategies to prevent any potential incidents involving egg-throwing.

3. Eric Schmidt

Former Google CEO Eric Schmidt caused a stir last year when he initially agreed to purchase the Alfa Nero, previously owned by a sanctioned Russian oligarch, for $67 million in an auction conducted by Antigua and Barbuda. However, he withdrew from the deal due to legal complications regarding the true owner. Schmidt subsequently opted for the purchase of Kismet instead. This 95-meter-long Lürssen-built vessel, formerly belonging to Jacksonville Jaguar's billionaire owner Shahid Khan, was quietly acquired and renamed Whisper. Accommodating up to 12 guests and a crew of 28, Whisper boasts a master deck featuring a private jacuzzi, full-service spa, lap pool, movie theater, and outdoor fireplace per Yacht Charter Fleet.

4. Barry Diller

Barry Diller, chairman of digital media company IAC, and his wife, fashion designer Diane von Furstenberg, co-own the megayacht Eos, adorned with a figurehead sculpture by Anh Duong. As one of the largest private sailing yachts globally, this three-masted Lürssen schooner spans 93 meters in length. Following a three-year construction period, Eos was delivered to Diller in 2009, and details about her interior and features have remained largely undisclosed. The influential couple often hosts celebrities on their yacht Eos, which usually sails around the Mediterranean in the summer and celebrates New Year's Eve in St. Barts per Business Insider.

5. Larry Ellison

Over the years, Oracle founder Larry Ellison has possessed a series of superyachts, including the Katana, the Ronin, and the Rising Sun — the latter he later sold to fellow billionaire David Geffen. In 2011, Ellison acquired his current vessel, Musashi, for a reported $160 million from custom-yacht giant Feadship. Taking inspiration from the renowned samurai warrior, Musashi, an 88-meter-long yacht, showcases a fusion of Japanese and Art Deco design influences per Business Insider. Its amenities include an elevator, swimming pool, beauty salon, gym, and basketball court.

6. Laurene Powell Jobs

Laurene Powell Jobs, investor, and wife of Steve Jobs, inherited the nearly completed 78-meter yacht named Venus upon the passing of the Apple co-founder in 2011. Having previously enjoyed vacations on Larry Ellison's yachts, Jobs desired a yacht of his own. Collaborating with renowned French architect and designer Philippe Starck, he designed Venus, valued at $130 million upon completion. "Venus comes from the philosophy of minimum. The elegance of the minimum, approaching dematerialization," Starck said of her design. According to Vanity Fair, Jobs and Starck initiated their collaboration in 2007, engaging in monthly meetings over four years. The result was Venus, delivered in 2012 according to Jobs' specifications: featuring six identical cabins, meticulously crafted to maintain areas of complete silence, and equipped with state-of-the-art technology.

7. Charles Simonyi

Charles Simonyi, an early Microsoft employee, has acquired two megayachts from the German shipyard Lürssen: the 90-meter Norn and the 71-meter Skat. Delivered in 2023, Norn boasts luxurious features, including an outdoor cinema and a pool floor that transforms into a dazzling dance floor. It shares a militaristic style with Skat, which Simonyi sold in 2021. Skat derives its name from the Danish word for treasure and was launched in 2002 with a listing price of 56.5 million euros. "The yacht is to be home away from my home in Seattle, and its style should match the style of the house, adapted for the practicalities of the sea," Simonyi said as reported by Boat International.

8. Sergey Brin

Google co-founder Sergey Brin has assembled a collection of yachts, boats, and recreational watercraft known as the "Fly Fleet." The flagship of Brin's fleet is the sleek Dragonfly, named after a once-secret Google project. This 73-meter-long creation from the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts boasts luxurious features like a movie theater and a helipad. It can accommodate up to 18 guests and 16 crew members, as reported by SuperYacht Times. Among Brin's collection is also the superyacht Butterfly, measuring a modest 38 meters in length. Often seen in the Bay Area, the crewmembers of Butterfly enjoy leisure activities like kitesurfing and providing swimming lessons to local children during their downtime.

Hersteller ist demnach die niederländische Werft Oceanco. Aktuell werden Testfahrten mit ihr durchgeführt, wie auf einem Video zu sehen ist.

Zuvor erregte die Yacht bei Einwohnern Rotterdams Aufsehen, da eine historische Brücke für sie zwischenzeitlich weichen sollte.

Jeff Bezos ist kein Mann, der klein denkt. Das wird auch bei seinem neuesten Spielzeug deutlich. Der Multimilliardär soll demnach Auftraggeber und Eigentümer der Segel-Yacht „Koru“ sein, die nach Streitigkeiten mit Einwohnern in Rotterdam nun bei ersten Testfahrten gesichtet wurde. Ihr Wert wird auf 470 Millionen Euro geschätzt, wie der „Spiegel“ berichtet.

Der Name der Yacht steht bei den Maori, dem indigenen Volk Neuseelands, für den entrollenden Wedel des Silberfarns, der Nationalpflanze. Zu sehen ist die Luxus-Yacht auf einem Video des Segel-Kanals „Dutch Yachting“.

Der 127 Meter lange Dreimaster gehört zu den längsten und teuersten Schiffen seiner Art. Die Yacht soll sich seit 2018 in Auftrag befinden. Hergestellt wird das Schiff von dem niederländischen Megayacht-Spezialisten Oceanco.

Normalerweise greift Bezos mit seinen Projekten nach den Sternen. Beim Bau seiner Yacht musste er sich jedoch bereits einer Brücke in Rotterdam geschlagen geben. Für den Transfer des Schiffes sollte die historische Koningshaven-Brücke (auch De Hef genannt) zwischenzeitlich abgebaut werden. Nach Protesten gegen das Vorhaben wurde die Yacht jedoch ohne ihre bis zu 80 Meter hohen Masten zur Fertigstellung in eine andere Werft verlegt.
