What is a pond yacht.

A Pond Yacht is a toy or model yacht made using a buoyant hull of a suitable size, that can be launched by hand and that has been suitably balanced with a weighted keel to allow adjustable working sails to provide free sailing on the open water.  

The term Pond Yacht has today become wrongly generalised to cover all types of model boats, including speedboats. Some 150 years ago craftsmen like shipwrights and shoemakers would spend the winter months in their sheds carving and making a one-off artisan yacht, ready for the spring, these model yachts would have been carved out of hollow selected timber or carved from laid up planks all glued together (Bread and Butter construction) using gouges and hand planes. These yachts would have followed the shapes of full-sized cutters and trawlers of the time as these were beautifully shaped craft designed to make good sail and were then at the cutting edge of technology. Fitted with topsail cutter Riggs, a long-weighted keel and a deep hull, the yachts would have originally been fitted with a gaff sail rig with doubleheader sails fitted to a long bowsprit. Some of these early yachts were works of art with superbly crafted fittings.

As the Victorian era came to an end, yacht designers began experimenting with sleeker hull shapes and began using the Bermuda rig. The sport once having been the select reserve of the wealthy became popular with working classes. Clubs had by now established racing classes to standardise the hull length, displacement and sail area. Municipal yacht ponds were springing up everywhere and had become popular around the world. A model yacht became the must-have Christmas or Birthday present of many boys and girls. Mum and Dad and even Grandma and Grandad would all go down the park and spend a sunny Sunday afternoon watching children sailing their model yachts, Dad or Grandad might even have brought along their big 10 raters, often pulled along on a specially made cart.

After the Great War, the popularity of sailing had come to the attention of many entrepreneurs and many companies sprang up manufacturing model yachts to sell on the high street in many toy shops including Gamages and Hamleys. Some of these yachts are now highly collectable. Between the two world wars, sailing Pond Yachts became the most popular hobby of them all, even more, popular than angling. Sadly the advent of cheap clockwork and battery-operated toys saw the popularity of this pastime decline, today there is a resurgence in interest with specialist companies like Haycroft Pond Yachts and Grove Pond Yachts building beautiful craft once again. Tirot of France and Gunther of Germany are still producing beautiful new toy yachts to this day.

I will be back, honest. Let me tell you a story, when we had the 'Covid' shutdown I wound up at home with all the time in the world, just not allowed out. So I picked up a model yacht that had been around for years. I started to restore it, I had a great time, got it finished and started another boat. As we came out of Covid, I bought some more models, and some more, and some more, I was living the dream. Then we got back into the real world, I started going to work again, well sort of, my son is now running our yacht maintenance company, so I go in a couple of days a week to do ?? then we started RC yacht racing again, then I had to start keeping them working. Then we thought it would be a good idea to get a Ceccarelli design for IOM model yachts, and lets build 9 of them in red cedar !! then I had work to do on my full size boat. Basically the world came back with a vengeance and I did not have time for the Classics. That is going to change, I will start updating the site next week and get back into showing you the new boats and what has happened to some of the others.

Stan Witty WASP

I have got my Stan Witty Wasp sailing. She is my first Marblehead Vane steered boat, that I have actually  raced, now called WaZp. I originally  bought her to do the Vintage open event at Fleetwood, as I did not want to risk damaging my Kittywake on the bank, more info on the bottom of the Stan Witty Wasp page. She sailed really well, but we, the Skipper and Mate, took a while longer to get going, she now needs a repaint! Our first sail was a VMYG meeting at Gosport, pictures below of Gosport and Fleetwood, with a link to the page.

WaZp at the vintage day in Gosport, I took a few boats that day, nice light winds and sunshine  with friends, a lovely day.

'Wazp' sailing at Fleetwood in the Classic and Vintage Marblehead Regatta 21 & 22 May. A great weekend, as I put these words together a couple of weeks later, I can almost walk again, they made us walk over 13 km on Saturday  alone. As mentioned above 'WaZp' sailed very well, hindered by us learning how to set her up, our first Vane meeting, we are really Radio guys, but we will be back next year, a great experience, a few more words on the Stan Witty Wasp page.

Gosport VMYG day, I took Wazp my Stan Witty Marblehead, Laura my 5 Tonner, XPDNC and a couple of Toy models for the grandsons, a lovely day.

As always with VMYG meetings a lot of fascinating  boats and interesting people.

A model Ship was spotted and recovered from the bottom of the lake, looks like she was set fire to and sunk! but a welcome new model for a young  lads bedroom, now called the 'Titanic', his mum will be so pleased!!

The Story of Pierre Paudeau and the Paris Pond Yachts and Paris Pond Boats!

Long before we began making our beloved Tippecanoe Boats, the famous Paris pond yachts sailed across the sailing ponds in Paris, France. In 1922, Pierre Paudeau's father, Clement Paudeau, began the family business with a wooden boat shop in Rue Visconti. The Paudeau family acquired the rights from the French Senate to rent model sailing boats in Paris. Pierre took over the shop from his father in 1929 and, in 1972, moved the shop to Rue Claude-Bernard and began selling and renting wooden model sailboats in the Jardin de Luxembourg.

The Jardin de Luxembourg is directly in front of the Luxembourg Palace. Two years after King Henry IV was murdered in 1610, his son, Louis XIII, became king when he was only 9 years old with Henry's wife, Marie de Medicis as Regent and Cardinal Richelieu as Chief Minister. During this turbulent time, Marie commissioned the Luxembourg Palace and gardens to be built in 1612. The Luxembourg Palace and its beautiful gardens were then constructed in the years 1615-1627. In 1612, work began on an aquaduct completed in 1624, when the Jardin de Luxembourg pond was first filled. History does not tell us when the first pond boat was launched in this now famous Paris sailing pond.

Today, the gardens of Luxembourg make up the largest park in Paris, France. The French Senate meets in the Luxembourg Palace and the senators enjoy going outside to watch the Paris pond boats sailing on the pond. Children still rent model boats to sail on the pond from a wooden model sailboat cart just like Pierre Paudeau's.

Several more sailing ponds located in Paris are in the Jardin de Tuileries in the Tuileries garden. While the Luxembourg gardens make up the largest park in Paris, the Tuileries garden is the most central. The Jardin de Tuileries sailing ponds are located just in front of the Louvre palace at one end of the Tuileries garden. The garden is one long strip stretching from the Louvre museum to the Concorde Square along the Seine river. The garden was designed by Le Notre in 1664 under King Louis the 14th and was added to by many subsequent kings of France, with the intent to improve the Louvre Palace and the city of Paris. The image of the beautiful Paris pond yachts sailing across the tranquil waters of these lovely ponds has become one of the fondest memories for hundreds of thousands of visitors to Paris.

Whether you're at the Jardin de Luxembourg pond or the Jardin de Tuileries ponds, you're sure to see skippers - young and old - sailing classic handmade wooden Paris pond yachts on the water. The famous Paris pond yachts were an inspiration for our own, handmade wooden model sailboats here at Tippecanoe Boats. The famous Paris ponds were also the inspiration for Frederick Law Olmsted when he was designing Central Park in New York City in the late 19th century. The city ran out of money for the plant conservatory that was planned as part of the park but the foundation had already been laid. Olmsted had recently been to Paris and had been fascinated by the sailing ponds in Paris so he turned the foundation of the conservatory into a sailing pond that has been one of the central attractions of Central Park ever since. You'll see many Tippecanoe boats racing across the pond now called Conservatory Water in Central Park and you'll find several Tippecanoe boats proudly stored inside the boat house at Conservatory Water.

A Pond Yacht Restoration

I am restoring a pond yacht, built by my grandfather , James Melville and a Mr. Ingram in Tayport, Scotland, in the early 1930s. The hull is 55 inches long x 13 inches at it's widest point ( beam ). The mast is 62 inches tall and the boom is 33 inches long. She weighs 26lb. The measurements and weight and classic lines are consistent with a classic 6 Metre yacht design, popular with model yacht builders in the 1930s.

Over the nearly 20 years Jill and I have lived here, Dennis has built six ponds, some for pleasure, some for watering livestock, agriculture, and wildlife. Songbird populations have rebounded and over a half mile of deep gully has been restored to gentle swales. Such is the power of the humble pond. As cattails grow up with willows and poplars, insects are less dominating. Instead, the music in a spring morning of robins, thrushes, juncos, and red-wing blackbirds with their pure liquid golden tone fills the air. Sand filters and under the dam pipelines allow gravity flow irrigation of our family orchard and garden. We can feed cows on eroded hills and rebuild the soil by working in manure and bedding, and for our neighbors, the water that flows off in spring thaws is clear and clean as the thaw is filtered through ever-deepening sod and humus-rich soil. The ponds have not leaked and the rock overflows have not eroded. The three ponds that are aligned to our homestead cost less than our well and provide water year-round for irrigation and fire protection as well as fun play on a hot day. Build a pond? Definitely!

WASHINGTON – NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg ripped Chinese leaders Monday for publicly claiming to support Ukraine in its war against Russia, but quietly backing Moscow and sending it military supplies .

“China is fueling the largest armed conflict in Europe since World War II,” Stoltenberg said during an event at the Wilson Center in DC. “At the same time, it wants to maintain good relations with the West.

“Well, Beijing cannot have it both ways.”

Since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022, China has publicly stated its desire for peace and maintained a publicly neutral position.

As recently as June 3, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning claimed Beijing “values its strategic partnership with Ukraine.”

“Since the full escalation of the Ukraine crisis, China has maintained communication and cooperation with Ukraine,” she said. “China is still Ukraine’s largest trading partner. Our Embassy in Ukraine continues to function normally.”

However, China is also Russia’s largest trading power – a position that has been solidified after dozens of countries around the world sanctioned exports and imports to and from Russia.

While China claims it has not sent Russia any weapons for use in Ukraine, US officials say Beijing has rendered the distinction meaningless by supplying Moscow critical technological components for war.

“Publicly, [Chinese] President Xi [Jinping] has tried to create the impression that he’s taking a back seat in this conflict to avoid sanctions and keep trade flowing,” Stoltenberg said Monday.

Beijing has also sent material that is used in the production of weapons, including “missiles, tanks [and] aircraft,” according to the NATO chief.

“Beijing is sharing high-end technologies, like semiconductors or dual-use items. Last year, Russia imported 90% of its microelectronics from China,” he said. “China is also working to provide Russia with improved supplied capability and imagery.

“All of this enables much death and destruction on Ukraine, bolsters Russia’s defense industrial base and evades the impact of sanctions and export controls.”

The US has taken notice, sanctioning seven China-based companies last week for shipping millions of dollars worth of material to Russia, including items which could be used in weapons systems.

“This idea that we can distinguish between the threats we see in Europe posed by Russia and the threats and the challenges of Xi in the Asia-Pacific posed by China – that we can separate those is wrong,” Stoltenberg said. “Our security is global, not regional, and that’s very clearly demonstrated in Ukraine.”

China has said it respects Ukraine’s territorial integrity – an argument Beijing uses to justify its illegal claims on large swaths of land in the South China Sea, including Taiwan.

However, China has neither pushed Russian tyrant Vladimir Putin to return Crimea to Ukraine nor implored his proxies to restore the eastern Donbas region to Kyiv.

China has also made other pro-Moscow moves, including pushing a controversial peace plan last year that would have seen Ukraine submit to Russian demands with little gained in return.

The US decried the mooted truce, with National Security Council spokesman John Kirby saying that while a peace plan “may sound good … any proposals from [China] … would be one-sided and reflect only the Russian perspective.”

This past weekend, China snubbed a peace summit held in Lucerne, Switzerland that was attended by representatives of more than 100 nations and international organizations.

Beijing declined an invitation after learning that Moscow would not be represented.

“China has repeatedly stressed that the international peace conference needs to meet the three important elements – namely, recognition from both Russia and Ukraine , equal participation of all parties and fair discussion of all peace plans,” Mao said. “As far as China is concerned, the meeting does not yet seem to meet these three elements and that is exactly why China would not be able to take part in the meeting.”

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky told summit attendees Saturday that he hoped Russia – and by extension, China – would attend the next iteration of the event.

Greece is turning an abandoned airport into an $8 billion smart city. Take a look at Ellinikon.

• Greece is building what's billed as Europe's largest and greenest smart city close to Athens.
• Ellinikon's developers say they're trying to construct a "zip-code paradise."
• At the center of the project is the Riviera Tower, set to become Greece's first skyscraper.

Greece is building Europe's largest and greenest smart city in an $8 billion project that's been more than a decade in the making .

Located on the site of a former Athens airport, Ellinikon is set to feature Greece's first skyscraper, a high-end mall, and a sports park.

Its developers told Business Insider they're trying to construct a "zip-code paradise" that merges scenic coastline views with tech-savvy and eco-friendly infrastructure. They're estimating that the project's first phase, which is expected to be completed by 2026, will attract a million new tourists and boost the Greek economy by 3.3 billion euros ($3.6 billion).

Ellinikon is one of several high-tech new cities being built across the world — although they're typically in China or the Middle East rather than Europe.

Ellinikon is being built on the site of Athens' former airport

The smart city gets its name from the disused Ellinikon International Airport 4 miles south of Athens, which closed in 2001. Construction was initially supposed to start in 2008 but was significantly delayed by the global financial crisis that left the Greek economy on the brink of collapse .

It's on the Aegean coast

Work on the project, which developers describe as Europe's biggest urban regeneration project , finally began in July 2020.

Its developers are touting Ellinikon's stunning views of the Aegean Sea . They've made regenerating the two-mile coastal front a priority.

High-end villas

Construction started last year on the Cove Residences, a set of luxury villas. Lamda Development, named as one of Time Magazine 's 100 most influential companies, says it's already sold 350 coastal-front properties and recently revealed plans to start work on another site called Little Athens , which will have another 1,115 residential units.

Large coastal park is a key part of the development

The idea of opening a metropolitan park on the site of the abandoned airport has been in the works since 2005. The site is 650 acres, a similar size to Alley Pond Park in Queens, New York City.

Riviera Tower will be Greece's first skyscraper

Developers have described the Riviera Tower , which is under construction and will have 180 apartments across 50 floors, as the "crown jewel" of the Ellinikon. At about 650 feet it will be Greece's tallest building and first skyscraper when completed.

The Ellinikon Experience Center aims to showcase the project's history

The smart city's experience center , which opened in 2022, is a restoration of one of the abandoned airport's original hangars. It aims to celebrate the site's history and showcase some of the eco-friendly tech that the site's founders believe will be central to the cities of the future.

Ellinikon will also have a super-luxury shopping district.

Lamda and other contractors have made building the Riviera Galleria , a high-end shopping district that sits next to the Riviera Tower, another priority. The site will be home to 70 leading fashion brands, according to Retail Insight Network.

Greece's prime minister is among the officials to visit the site

Kyriakos Mitsotakis visited Ellinikon earlier this year to mark the opening of Lamda's first completed building, a center for disabled people. He's made boosting Greece's economy one of his main priorities as prime minister.

Not all Athenians are thrilled about Ellinikon

Lamda CEO Odisseas Athanasiou has previously said that Ellinikon is "putting Greece on the map for the right reason" — but not all Athenians agree. Some locals fear the project will turn Athens into a " mini-Dubai " full of mega-yachts and casinos, while others have complained about the destruction of historic buildings linked to the old airport.
