This is Helly Hansen’s most rugged dry bag and the perfect bag for ocean sailing.

It’s made from super durable, waterproof materials and can withstand a good dunking (though we guess this hasn’t been properly tested as they say it’s not waterproof when fully submerged!)

It has a removable shoulder strap which makes it easier to carry for long distances if you need to. The only slightly annoying thing about this dry bag is that it opens from the top, so it’s hard to find things at the bottom.

Earth Pak are top sellers when it comes to dry bags. They come in a range of colours and sizes, and they’re 100% waterproof and rugged too.

The great thing about this design of a dry bag is that it will float because it’s full of air. So you don’t need to worry as much about it going for a swim!

They come with a shoulder strap, which we don’t love for everyday use, but they are the perfect bag to have on board and stow in the cockpit or use as a grab bag (we attach the strap to the binnacle so it can’t go anywhere!

This is a rugged and waterproof bag designed to be used outdoors. It has an outer zip pocket for quick access to things like your mobile phone which is really handy.

Personally, we wouldn’t choose the bright orange colour for trips ashore but it’s perfect for use as a grab bag or for storing things in the cockpit, as it’s easy to see if it goes overboard by accident.

Dry bags don’t have to look like dry bags anymore!

We love the fact you can now buy waterproof sailing backpacks that look like normal rucksacks – they’re perfect for trips to shore where you don’t necessarily want to be lugging around a bright red shiny duffle bag.

Your cockpit bag can probably double up as a day bag for shore, but if you live on board or sail regularly then it’s much easier to have a bag that all your sailing stuff just lives in so you can grab and go.

The Mier dry bag is a great option for a sailing day bag. They have a roll-top closure so you don’t have to worry about metal zips and salt water and they’re 100% waterproof.

They have a compartment for a laptop or tablet which is really handy if you work from the shore. They also have several outer pockets which we find perfect for a water bottle. You can even carry extra things in the bungee cords on the front making this bag bigger than it seems.

This is one of the more comfortable waterproof bags for sailing we’ve reviewed here, with padded straps and the option to hand carry with the fold-down rubber strap at the top.

Geckobrands have a nice backpack for sailing day adventures on shore. It’s super lightweight but still pretty tough, and it’s waterproof of course! It has a water-resistant pocket to store smaller items, and 2 D rings to attach things like water bottles if you need.

The straps aren’t as comfortable as other bags on this list but we like the way it looks, and it’s useful that it’s so lightweight!

#10 Waterproof Bags For Smaller Items

There’s always something that you want to protect from the sea and rain that’s a little smaller – usually your mobile phone.

• Waterproof bag for your phone

Having lost a mobile phone to the damp of the sailboat I thoroughly recommend regularly storing your phone in a waterproof case. They’re very cheap and they work brilliantly, so it’s a win-win really.

They’re also really handy if you want to swim to shore or you can even take photos in the sea (though the quality doesn’t come out great through the plastic!) There are a million different ones to choose from and I’m sure most work great, but we love this one .

The other option you have which is especially useful for electronics is a waterproof box . We’d recommend having a few of these onboard for longer-term storage of things like hard drives and memory cards.

• Cheap waterproof bags for small things

You should also consider getting some smaller, cheaper waterproof bags for other random things like items from a medical kit (the clear ones are great for this as you can write on them in permanent marker and see the contents too).

• Lightweight waterproof bags

You can fill these with air before you roll them up – great for carrying things like keys and shoes to shore when you want to swim there and head off on a short hike.

I managed to stuff in a summer dress, my phone, keys, and wallet, then I swam to shore with my flip flops on my hands, dried off on the beach, and had a lovely day exploring the town!

Larger waterproof bags for sailing are perfect for getting luggage on and off a sailboat. They’re also really handy as grab bags if you have a larger sailboat. They have to be able to store easily, and be easily moved on and off the boat.

#11 Peak Design Duffel

We are massive fans of Peak Design and especially their duffel bag . It’s the perfect luggage bag for sailing and feels as though it’s been designed for life on the water.

We’ll get stuck straight into the features that make this bag so well suited to sailing. Firstly, the weatherproof nylon canvas shell does a great job of keeping the splashes out. It might not be fully waterproof like some of the bags on this list but unless you’re going swimming with it, it’s going to do the job. It’s 100% recycled nylon too so no feeling guilty about the environment.

The bottom liner is waterproof, so it will be fine on leaky dinghy floors. But what we really love is the weatherproof ultrazip which is probably the most rugged zip we’ve ever come across. It won’t fail in days due to the saltwater, and it’s super rugged. It’s possibly the best feature of the bag (though that’s a tough one to decide when it has so many great features!)

The duffel comes in two sizes, 35l or 65l, so you can pick your poison depending on how long your trip is. The 35l is a great size for a weekend away or a week or two if you pack light. It folds small so will fit easily in little cabins, and it’s easy to carry too.

What Is A Bag Designed For Sailing?

A bag for sailing is exactly what it sounds like. Any bag suitable for days out sailing – something practical, waterproof, and lightweight that you can protect your belongings in when sailing.

What you use it for exactly will be pretty personal, but here are a few things we use a bag for onboard Hot Chocolate.

Before we head off sailing I always grab our designated bag to keep up in the cockpit. It’s specifically for sailing days and I store in there things like binoculars, a horn, sun cream, water, and snacks.

Basically anything I think I might need if the weather gets rough and I don’t want to keep heading down below. It’s been amazing to have to hand in a number of situations.

I also have a sailing bag for day trips to the shore, to take in the dinghy. I learned quickly never to jump in the dinghy with anything less than a waterproof bag when the weather turned choppy and all my electronics got soaked on one of our first dinghy rides back!

If you’re working from the sailboat (and also local cafes and co-working spaces), then you’re going to need a decent waterproof backpack for digital nomads that has protection for your laptop and other key features.

The other things we use a waterproof bag for are our grab bag should we ever have to abandon ship, and our medical kit so that things like plasters and bandages don’t suffer from dampness.

There are dozens, if not hundreds, of sailing bags out there. Whether you need a big duffle to store your gear for a week-long charter, a fashionable tote for a daysail, or a waterproof case for your phone, we’ve rounded up all the best sailing bag options.

A liveaboard boater who commutes via dinghy every day will need something waterproof–something that can get their laptop to shore and back safely through splashes or rainstorms. A charter sailor who flies into the BVI for a week’s vacation needs something completely different–they need duffels that will allow them to keep their gear tidy from home to the plane to the yacht.

The only way to pick the right sailing gear is to step back and look at exactly what your needs are. And in the end, most sailors will wind up with a variety of pouches, bags, backpacks, and duffels to suit every occasion.

What to Look for in Sailing Luggage

First, you should always buy a soft-sided bag if you’re going on a sailboat. Those hard-sided wheeled suitcases are great for marching through airports but are impossible to stow on a sailboat. Even if you are sailing on a large yacht, sailboats have small, strangely sized storage areas. A soft-sided bag is easier to store and manage on a sailboat.

This applies just as much to being kept dry on the interior of the boat as it does getting splashed in a dinghy–just being in the salt air is enough to do in most bags.

Also, avoid natural untreated fibers and leather of any kind. These will mold and mildew faster than you could ever imagine. Look for high-quality plastics that won’t degrade in UV and stainless steel hardware that can stand up to saltwater. And even if you invest in the best waterproof zips, take care of them by treating them occasionally with some zipper lubricant.

Sail bags come in different levels of waterproofness. Standard bags sold for daily use aren’t waterproof. However, these bags will be less expensive and often have breathable fabric, which is great for mold resistance. If you plan on transporting your bag straight into a secure storage area or want to put it in an additional waterproof bag, a standard bag might meet your needs.

Water-resistant bags resist water but aren’t submersible. A water-resistant bag should keep rainwater or salt spray out of your bag. However, if you drop your bag in the water, don’t expect your items to remain dry. A water-resistant bag might not be crafted with waterproof construction and additional water pressure. Water might start seeping in through seams and zippers.

Life on a sailboat is about minimalism and enjoying time with your crew instead of showing off the latest fashions. Storage is always an issue on a boat, so it’s often best to pack lightly so that you can more easily manage to transport and stow your gear.

In addition, you’ll often have to lug your gear through multiple stops to get to your boat. You might well board an airplane, take a taxi, and get in a small dinghy before arriving at your boating destination. The fewer items you have to carry, the better.

The salt air and sun exposure might dry out your lips, so pack lip balm too. In addition, a lightweight cardigan or sweater is a good idea for breezy evenings or cold airport lounges.

Space in the bathroom (called a head on a boat) is limited, so consider a hanging toiletry bag. This will help you keep your items organized instead of haphazardly managing items on the floor. A toiletry bag also keeps your items private, and you can keep your toothbrush separate from the other crewmember’s things.

When you sail a boat of any kind, you understand the importance of a good sailing bag to hold all your belongings. My personal sailing kit bag is a sailcloth duffel bag. I bought a sailing jacket and pants years ago from a local sailmaker, and he shipped it to me in a bag made from old sails – well it wasn’t actually “old” sailcloth , I assume it was offcuts of new sailcloth from sails that he just made or repaired.

I thought “ What a great idea! This is one of the best sailing bags I’ve seen… simple but effective. ”

Rather than throwing offcuts of the sailcloth into the trash, he stitched up these bags made from sails and offered them to local sailors. It’s a win for him, in that it cuts down on waste he has to get rid of, and it’s free advertising for him (he puts his logos on the bags and straps). After a day’s sailing, quite often you don’t take your sails back up into the club, but you almost always take your bag with you, so it’s advertising for him wherever you go.

They probably don’t take too long to make – they’re stitching 100’s of yards of sails every day, so a bag would be pretty quick and easy. He might have even got his apprentice to do it.

The bags are made out of sailcloth, so they are super strong. It also has long straps which makes it easy to carry. Mine has a really sturdy zipper and heavy-duty stitching as well, and the whole bag just feels like it will last a long time.

A few downsides – it’s not a waterproof sailing bag, and it doesn’t have any compartments, but for me, it’s not a massive deal. Having these features would be good sometimes though.

When I go sailing on yachts, I’m a bit paranoid about water getting into my car remote, phone, and wallet. Bags often end up all over the place when sailing in yachts – there’s often water in the bottom of the boat and you can get it coming in from rain, waves, or sail changes, so I just slip all of these important water-sensitive items into a zip-lock freezer bag and so far, it’s worked fine for me.

We sailors know a thing or two about soft luggage. The best duffel bag though is really a matter of functional practicality fused with personal taste. I've picked out a range of the best duffel bags for sailors from 30L to 130L in this sailing luggage buyers guide.

Packing our bags to go sailing requires a bit of creative space saving and calls into action our best duffel bag for the occasion.

Are we going for a long time offshore or around the cans? Are we carrying a full set of foul weather gear a lifejacket, sailing boots and safety gear? I carry a 90L Helly Hansen bag with my foul weather gear and lifejacket and then in a smaller 30L Helly Hansen bag I carry my smaller daily essentials.

The Helly Hansen 30L duffel is made from a sturdy plastic canvas. so it is water resistant to a degree. Though the seams aren’t waterproofed, so it isn’t advisable to dunk this bag for any length of time. The rucksack straps neatly stow away into the zip flap on top, though this makes it a bit stiff to handle, it does get those straps out of the way, especially when you’re onboard and you want them flailing around. Under the top flap there’s a mesh pocket too. I find this useful to stow my sailing gloves, buff and hat. In the cold the material on this bag can get quite stiff. But, mine has stood the test of time so far, as can be seen in the pics at the top of this buyer’s guide. The purple bag is the earlier model to this one. They’ve improved the bag by adding webbing straps and handles on each end which is handy for strapping it down to stop it flying off a bunk.

This 30L dry bag duffel from Lomo is incredibly good value for money. You get fully welded seams and a roll top closure. This gives all the advantages of the wide mouthed duffel with waterproof submergibility.

I personally love a white bag when I’m heading into dark spaces, such as yacht cabins. It means you can see the contents inside your bag more easily. Whilst this duffel doesn’t have the practical additional pockets of the other non-waterproof duffels, the trade-off is worth it if you are planning on going for a wet ride or need to put your luggage where it will get wet. Those of you sailing smaller J boats, I’m looking at you…

The other trade-off with this type of waterproof bag is that by its very nature, to enable toughness and strong welded seams, the material must be a certain thickness. This can make the bag feel quite stiff. Particularly in colder weather. This duffel doesn’t have rucksack style shoulder straps but does have a removable single shoulder strap and plenty of webbing to cinch it tighter and places you can tether it to your bunk to keep it in place. Some folks have used this as a pillow by trapping air inside.

This small holdall from Gill is made from PVC with welded seams and roll top to give a waterproof duffel. It has a removable shoulder strap, but as with the other waterproof bag in this size, it doesn’t have rucksack straps. The roll top keeps a watertight seal and can be used to trap air inside the bag making it buoyant or useful as a pillow.

It features some handy webbing loop handles on each end plus additional webbing loops to attach other bits of kit to. On one side it also had a label window so that you can put your name on it to identify its owner.

The welded PVC is a little stiffer in the cold and can be tougher to handle, but when warm it’s handles very nicely.

Overboard have this rated to IP66 so you can be confident that if you’re luggage is sitting a pool of water in the wet locker of a boat, your kit will still be dry inside. Equally if it gets repeatedly dripped on by a leaking hatch, as long as the top is rolled over correctly and fastened, then your kit will remain dry.

It’s been designed for a bit of rough handling and should stand up well to the rigours of frequent use in wet conditions. Ideal for carrying wet gear back with you too, so if you go open water swimming, surfing, or kayaking and find yourself needing to pack a wetsuit and wet gear, then shove them in this for the journey home and your car will remain dry.

The attachment points on this bag also enable you to strap it down, so it either won’t fly out of a bunk or it will remain strapped to your touring kayak or paddleboard.

Best Duffel Bag for Sailors 40L – 65L

Helly Hansen Offshore Waterproof Duffel bag, 50L

Helly Hansen do a fair range of waterproof kit bags. This middle of the size range duffel is a waterproof version with welded seams and a roll top.

It can sit in pools of water all day and your kit will stay dry.

They suggest it can be strapped to a car top and it remain waterproof too, though I haven’t tried this so can’t verify whether kit will stray dry with rain pelting it at 70mph on a motorway.

As per other welded waterproof bags, this one isn’t designed to be fully submersible but it is as waterproof as you can get without full dunking.

It has end handles which are useful for strapping the bag down, but very few other bells or whistles.

There’s no rucksack straps with this, but there is a removable shoulder strap.

– Lots of room to put your gear in

– You can load and unload the bag effortlessly

– The duffel doesn’t guarantee complete protection if submerged in water

– Some compartments would be beneficial for storing smaller tools and essentials

Red Original Kit Bag

If you watch the Red marketing hype you’d think this bag will make you a paddleboard, camping and hiking expert and all round wilderness guru.

In this bag we are given a waterproof zip closure rather than the roll top of other 100% waterproof bags. It has welded seams as the others do, but it is made from a slightly lighter weight material.

It has a waterproof padded mat inside it which can be removed and used as a changing mat to stand on.

The Red Equipment bag has a range of strap options, including rucksack straps and shoulder strap.

There’s some mild eco credentials on this as it is made from recycled TPU. Though I guess those credentials need thoroughly scrutinising as who knows where this bag was made and how many air miles it took to get to you.

The bag does pack some seriously good organisation and innovation though, with high quality components used and sturdy long lasting fasteners.

– If you’re looking for a lighter option, this is the duffel bag for you

– Plenty of storage for a first aid kit, towel and more

– It’s easy to forget to pack the waterproof padded mat

Typhoon Osea Dry Duffel Pack 60L

The Typhoon Osea Dry Duffel is made from 500D tarp which is 100% waterproof.

This roll top bag is 100% waterproof and comes with removable rucksack straps as well as waist straps, which is very handy in any rucksack with a larger capacity.

This duffel also comes with an unusual buckle attached to a chest strap that has a built-in whistle. This is a nod towards Typhoons origins as a commercial safety gear manufacturer.

A feature I really like on this duffel is a compression valve, which means you can sit on this bag and squash the air out of it, close off the valve and you’ve saved a ton of space in the cabin.

I like the understated functionality of this bag and whilst it doesn’t shout style appeal, it really is a great duffel for keeping your kit dry, or for keeping your wet kit from leaking all over the place.

Lomo Blaze Expedition

This Lomo orange duffel is made from waterproof material with welded seams on the sides. This means the bag can sit in a pool of water without letting any in.

It isn’t submersible though as this has a zipped closure on a large top flap. There’s a mesh pocket inside and some useful webbing loops externally mounted for clipping on gear.

The duffel is fitted with a strong D shaped dual zip closure and bungee loops for strapping the bag down. Excellent value for money this bag has decent capacity and there’s a huge range of complimentary other dry bags and pouches available from this Scottish based manufacturer. They keep their prices lower by cutting out the middle-seller and they sell direct to customer using popular platforms such as Amazon and Ebay and their own website.

– This duffel is good option if you’re on a budget

– It has bungee loops to help you secure your bag

– You can fit plenty of essentials in it thanks to its large capacity 

– Not fully submersible with its waterproofing

Lomo Dry Bag Duffel

This 60L dry bag duffel from Lomo is incredibly good value for money. You get fully welded seams and a roll top closure. This gives all the advantages of the wide mouthed duffel with waterproof submergibility. It’s the larger version of the one I featured at the top of this buyer’s guide.

I love a brightly coloured bag, as they cheer up dark spaces, such as windless yacht cabins. they also allow you to see the contents within your bag more easily. Whilst this duffel doesn’t have the practical additional pockets of the other non-waterproof duffels, the trade-off is worth it if you are planning on going for a wet ride or need to put your luggage where it will get wet.

The other trade-off with this type of waterproof bag is that by its very nature, to enable toughness and strong welded seams, the material must be a certain thickness. his can make the bag feel quite stiff. Particularly in colder weather. This duffel doesn’t have rucksack style shoulder straps but does have a removable single shoulder strap and plenty of webbing to cinch it tighter and places you can tether it to your bunk to keep it in place.

– Bright design makes the bag easier to locate

– Good waterproofing for a budget duffel

– It doesn’t feature any additional compartments for essentials

Zhik Holdall

You can trust Zhik to make something that looks sporty even when it’s designed to hold your sweaty salt encrusted clothes.

Made from 600 denier fabric, this bag has a softer handle or feel than the PVC welded waterproof bags I’ve featured elsewhere in this buyer’s guide. If ever I have the choice, if I am sailing on a less sporty, less dunking wet boat, I will always choose the softer feeling bag as it’s nicer to deal with in my cabin.

This duffel from Zhik has those stowable rucksack straps as many others have in this best duffel bag buyers guide making it easy to schlepp your gear from shore to ship and back again.

Due to its construction this bag can be described as water resistant but not waterproof. It can deal with a bit of spray and a bit of errant water, but you won’t want to leave it in a pool of water festering away.

The base has anti slip, which is great if you have this resting on a bunk or other dry surface and want it to stay put.

There’s also organisational pockets and zipped areas to help keep smaller things where you can find them easily.

– Easier to carry than other options on this list as it has a lighter denier fabric material

– The pockets and zipped areas are great for storing belongings you’ll need

– It’s not waterproof, meaning the contents will get wet if it falls into the water

Best Duffel Bag for sailors 90L -130L

HH Duffel Bag 2

This Helly Hansen 90 Litre duffel offers versatility and conversion between bag and backpack as per the smaller model I introduced at the top of this buyer’s guide. The material is hardwearing and waterproof, though as per the others in this range, it isn’t 100% waterproof as the seams aren’t welded.

This allows for an internal and external pocket and this model also comes with a pack away bag that can be used for other things when the bag is out. I use this bag for flying with a lot of kit, as seen in the image at the top, in the white version. I’m not sure if they sell white ones anymore. I’ve manged to get most of my foul weather gear plus a very neatly folded asymmetrical spinnaker for a 36 foot yacht in this bag. My back did not approve of the weight though. Beware of overloading large bags and doing your back in.

Gill Rolling Cargo Bag

I had to include on wheeled duffel in this buyer’s guide, but I have to confess to you, that if someone turns up to my boat with a duffel on wheels, I will make them sleep with it in their bunk. I have a personal apoplexy every time I head wheeled bags being pulled along a pontoon and the noise they make is particularly unsociable when flying in or out during the small hours. Having got that off my chest, I will contradict myself entirely by saying this is an excellent bag!

It has a padded shoulder strap, some sturdy handles and a huge zip opening to access kit through. There are webbing loops on the sides and all manner of organisational pockets internally and at one end externally.

Whilst the material is waterproof, the construction is not, so it will withstand a bit of rain and spray, but it shouldn’t be left sitting in pools of water.

It has good handles on each end too, so passing this bag up and over a rail to a fellow crew mate or skipper is easy.

– Instead of carrying the duffel, you can wheel it on your boat 

– Excellent features such as a large zip opening and sturdy handles

– Not fully waterproof. It will only protect against a small amount of spray

Made from water resistant and durable nylon diamond ripstop shell with 600D TPU base, this extra-large bag will fit a fair amount of bulky kit and still squash down quite small when it’s empty.

It has stowable backpack straps to help you haul this beast around too.

The end pocket is a zipped section where you can shove some wet shoes or kit.

There’s an additional zipped exterior pocket to the side. The structured ends help the bag to maintain its shape as with some of the larger bags they can go wildly misshapen when half filled, making them hard to zip and unzip.

– It’s a large bag that a lot of tools and essentials will fit in

– Easy to store away in a cabin when the duffel is empty

The Crewsaver holdall or duffel is made from an abrasion resistant nylon type of material. Unlike so many of the others in this best duffel bag buyers guide, this one doesn’t have the cold plastic outer feel.

It isn’t 100% waterproof but it is water resistant so you can get rained on or place it on a wet deck while you transfer it from shore to ship or ship to shore.

This holdall is a simple but functional design that packs down very small when empty.

The end pocket is semi translucent so you can see the outline of stuff in there. It comes a range of sizes too.

Thule Chasm Sport Duffel Bag

Seriously huge, they named this bag Chasm. I can’t help but snigger at that name, but I’m a puerile eejit. So, Thule, they do luggage for the top of cars and roof racks right? Yes, and they do some great duffels too.

The top flap on this is huge. It not only opens the top, but down the side too. This makes fitting and finding bulky sailing gear a doddle.

As with most of the duffels I’ve chosen to show you, this one also converts to a rucksack. Though given the size of it, if you really do stuff this thing full to capacity, your spine might need a bit of a decompression after hauling this load around.

Internally it has mesh pockets to help with organisation and externally it has compression straps to help keep the bag snuggly fastened and not flopping around if it is only half filled.

The bag has a carry case pouch which it folds down to fit into for storage, but the pouch can be used too, such as for your dirty undies or other kit.

The bottom of the bag is padded and there’s a lockable zip which means this bag is a good candidate for flying with your gear and will withstand being handled and thrown into and out of plane holds.

The mag isn’t 100% waterproof, but it is made from waterproof material. You might not want to go laying this around in pools of water all day long, but it will slide into a bunk space easily and compress down once you’ve removed all of your bulky sailing gear to hang up.

very impressed with the polycotton cover I ordered for my Laser Vago. It is well-made and in the UK too which takes a big box for me and was delivered well within the timescales that I anticipated so all round five big stars from me

One minor gripe Is that I wish there were two loops to lift the cover at the back to prevent water pooling rather than just the one.

But that’s me being really picky

I bought this to repair a campervan canvas pop top and it worked a treat because it is strong and weather proof. I've used on other outdoor fabrics since so came back for a second roll. I came back to Sailing Chandlery as they were quick and efficient and had just what I wanted.

The cover looks good, and feels good quality. It fits great and has the peace of mind of the 5 year guarantee.

My hatch is 25 years old but works fine apart from the seal shrank and kept dropping out of the slot. Fitting this new seal makes the hatch tighten nice and snug and the seal stays in place. Also saved me changing the whole hatch with the work that involves.

The numbers were just what I wanted; numbers which stuck to my sail. Don’t be surprised I left this review as I have purchased numbers from other places which didn’t stick well and came off on the first outing, but these ones have held fast.

Then unpack, and take only half.” Nearly everyone overthinks about what’s necessary while away from home. They pack as if they’ll spill a glass of wine on every piece of clothing they own – like t-shirts and shorts aren’t sold everywhere around the world. You should prepare for numerous scenarios, though, and we’re here to help you find the right balance for your week on the water.

Consider the following for your trip:

(4-5) shirts.

These can be t-shirts, cutoffs, long-sleeved, or anything suitable for daytime in your chosen location. If you’re heading for tropical, sunny destinations, you should consider picking up a few moisture-wicking shirts. Not only will this help manage the smell of your sweat-soaked tops, but they will also dry incredibly fast in the sun. Perfect for re-use or quick hand-washed laundry.

(2) Pairs of Shorts :

You really won’t need more than two pairs of shorts, leggings, or whatever other bottoms you think you’ll spend your time in on the boat. In fact, you may not be wearing them at all beyond the transit to and from the dock. Remember, board shorts and bikinis will be the go-to nearly every day, and unless you find yourself out for a night in the city, shorts and pants won’t be necessary. 

(5) Pairs of Underwear :

One of the few items we don’t like to skimp on is underwear. You should do yourself – and your boat mates – a favor and pack several pairs for your time onboard. You’ll spend most of your time in or near the water, though, so if you do need to re-use something, you can always give them a quick hand-wash with your travel detergent – which we cover below as a carry-on item. 

(2-3) Swimsuits :

Depending on your style, you may want a few diverse sets of swimsuits, be it board shorts or bikinis. For men, board shorts can easily double as daytime walking shorts in less formal settings. It even helps to narrow down the list of items you carry with you on a day trip. Women can wear bikinis under their clothes, sure – but why not bring a couple of different swimwear styles for different occasions. Class up one of your suits for the beachside bars and restaurants, and get yourself something more simple for the days on the boat.

(1) Light Jacket or Sweatshirt :

If it’s your first time heading to the tropics on a boat, you may be surprised to know just how chilly it can get at night, especially when there’s a storm rolling in. We recommend taking a light jacket, preferably waterproof, to keep warm on a less-than-ideal evening. Further, boat cabins can get cold, and you may not have the option to change the temperature. Pack a light sweatshirt or pair of sweatpants to avoid an uncomfortable situation. 

(2-3) Pairs of Shoes :

Having the proper footwear on a week-long boat trip is surprisingly important. We suggest bringing two pairs of shoes: one for day excursions, and the other for onboard the boat. Remember, you’ll likely be taking a few walks through town or going on short outings, so having a more rugged pair of shoes is ideal. We suggest a nice pair of hiking sandals such as Tevas or Chacos. The second pair of shoes will be used on the boat. Rubber-soled boat shoes offer the comfort you need without risking your personal safety. Travel Sized Toiletries

As with any holiday, travel-sized toiletries can be a lifesaver – or they can be a total waste of space. Throughout our years spent on the water, we’ve realized that some things should stay on the store shelves.

Let’s take a look below at a few toiletries we always recommend bringing for first-time sailing holidays. 

Hanging toiletry bag:.

For anyone who has traveled outside of the country before, you’ll probably understand just why this item is so important. A waterproof, hanging toiletry bag makes bathroom life incredibly convenient, eliminating the need to set your personal hygiene products down on shared spaces. Nearly every shower and bathroom will have a hanging hook, and these bags are the perfect match. 

Toothpaste/Toothbrush :

Of the more apparent toiletries not to leave behind, oral care products take the first spot. Don’t wait until your sailing out of the marina to realize you left these essentials behind. 

Reef-Safe Sunscreen :

Sailing holidays and coral reefs go hand-in-hand, and those of us that love spending time above these teeming underwater communities want to do everything in our power to protect them for years to come. Reef-safe sunscreens lack the chemicals present in standard sunscreens that destroy these living ecosystems from the inside out, making them the ideal choice for a sailing holiday. 

Aloe Vera :

If you plan on spending a significant amount of time in the sun, aloe vera should be somewhere at the top of the list of essentials. Don’t let a little too much time in the sun or a lack of sunscreen ruin your entire holiday. 

Necessities

You might not think you’d need a ton of different documents for a simple week-long vacation on the water, but there are certainly a few that are helpful if you’re heading out of the country or onward to new destinations.

Even if you’re only traveling domestically, you’ll need at least a couple of the following.

As expected, you’ll need to have your passport with you when leaving and re-entering the country. Customs and immigration officers will be checking you in and out of seaports just as they would in an airport, so be sure to check the passport eligibility requirements before leaving home. Some countries require a specific number of passport pages to be blank, while others simply want to know where you’ve been and where you’ll be heading. 

Some countries require you to arrange a visa before entering through immigration, although most countries have some sort of “Visa on Arrival” service. Either way, check with your embassy in the country of intended travel, or simply visit the tourism website for different destinations. All information regarding immigration and customs will be available on government sites. 

Secondary ID :

It’s always best to carry some form of secondary identification, such as a driver’s license or I.D. card. This allows officials to quickly verify your identity and can make for a much smoother traveling experience.  * Pro Tip : Copy, print, and laminate the I.D. page of your passport in color. Use this copy in place of your invaluable paper passport, something you want to avoid exposing to the salty, humid tropical air. 

Cash and Cards :

This will depend entirely on the destination, but most places will allow access to at least a few ATM machines. Still, it’s a good idea to keep some cash on you for emergencies and to bring a backup card with you – stored in a separate location from your primary card. If anything happens while abroad, having a spare card or cash can be a life-saver. 

* Make sure you notify your bank of your travel plans well before departure. If you try to use one of your cards outside your home country or even your home town – the fraud department may flag your card for fraud. If there’s a time difference or happens on the weekend, some banks can be difficult or impossible to reach quickly. Do yourself a favor, and make sure you register your plans with the bank – even if you only plan to use the card for emergencies. 

Rental Documents :

Not everyone will have to carry rental documents for their trip, but some will. When chartering a boat, always take at least one copy of the rental agreement with you for requests from immigration authorities, police, or insurance agents. Our suggestion – if it’s not yours, keep the rental agreement with you during your entire trip. 

Medications :

If you or anyone traveling with you has a medical condition that requires medication, this is a no-brainer. Consult with your doctor or pharmacist before leaving the country, and try to fill up your prescriptions in case you get stuck abroad for longer than expected. Some medications aren’t available in foreign countries, and some may be considered illegal.

Entertainment

We get it – a long, uneventful weekend on the water listening to waves roll in sounds like paradise. Who says that time isn’t also good for socializing or reading that book you’ve been trying to finish, though?

We have a small list of things we enjoy taking with us on holiday, so consider the following items for your trip – especially when traveling with kids.

If you like to read, there’s no better place to do it than on the water or lounging on the beach. The sun perfectly lights the pages, you’re warm and relaxed, and you’re surrounded by the sounds of bliss. Even if you only get a couple of hours of reading in, it’s worth the luggage space. Feeling like you may want to own a sailboat of your own someday? Take along some of the best books to prepare you for the cruising lifestyle – you’ll be reading them in the perfect setting to get you motivated.

We’re so used to having music at our fingertips that it might be hard to remember – there isn’t always wifi while at sea. What’s your next best bet? Download some of your favorites, or take advantage of the ship’s CD player if they have one (most do). It even gives you the chance to brush the dust off of some of your old favorite albums.

Classic card games are good fun, whether with friends or family. Kids love to play cards when camping, during sleepovers, or any time they aren’t bothered by modern technology – so why would a boat be any different? Just make sure you print out or screenshot the rules to a few games before setting sail. In any case, even if you don’t draw a single card from the deck, you won’t be taking up any space that will be missed. 

Miscellaneous

The items on this list are not all-inclusive, but over the years, we’ve been able to make use of them a few times each.

Pick and choose as you wish – but remember, packing light is the name of the game for a week-long sailing holiday. 

This goes right up at the top of our list – nearly everyone will want to document their trip somehow. In this day in age, there’s really no need to go out and buy yourself some extravagant camera just for a holiday, but if you have the desire for it and the cash to blow – by all means. An alternate consideration to make is buying an action camera that can be used underwater. If you’re headed for vibrant coral reefs, that’s one scenario that will make for some pretty epic memories. If you’re just starting out with underwater photography, be sure to study up some of the best underwater cameras, housings, and techniques to capture the perfect images under the waves.

Microfiber Towels :

To preface this, remember – there will be towels on board the boat. If you have a little extra space, though, consider using it to store a microfiber towel for day trips and excursions. These towels dry incredibly fast in the sun, and they don’t hold sand like most other towels, so if you’re headed for a day on the beach – it might be worth the space. 

Polarized Sunglasses :

While polarized shades may not be necessary for everyone’s list, many would call them a requirement. Not all sunglasses are created equal, and polarized lenses make a world of difference – especially around the water. Apart from the added protection for your eyes, polarized lenses are a great way to cut through the glare and reflection on the water. In any case, make sure you protect your eyes with something during your days in the sun. 

International Outlet Adapter :

Depending on where you’re headed, you may want to bring an international outlet adapter for your electronics. 

Home Country Flag :

Many people in the sailing community like to bring their home country’s flag to fly during their journey. It’s just a fun way to represent where you’re coming from, and you’ll be sure to see plenty of other sailboats flying their flags as well.

All that time in the sun can take a toll on your skin, and if you’re not careful, your lips are in line to see the worst of it. SPF lip balms are your best bet for combatting chapped and sunburned lips while on holiday. 

Travel Detergent :

This may be one of the most valuable items you can bring, depending on your style and how you pack. If you want to pack like a minimalist, bring detergent so that you can hand wash clothes in the sink. For drying, simply hang items on a hanger or attach them with a clip to the boat’s deck for quick dry times.

What Not to Pack – Leave the Valuables at Home

Probably the most essential consideration to make is what NOT to bring on your sailing holiday. Too often, people bring valuables and items of sentiment that are lost or damaged forever.

Do yourself a favor, and leave the following items waiting safely at home for your return.

Valuable and jewelry :.

Valuables and jewelry only serve one purpose at sea – search and recovery missions. Trust us when we say you don’t need these things on the ocean. Even if you are heading inland for a night on the town, you can do without them. Don’t believe us? Ask around to see what others have to say about it. We wouldn’t steer you in the wrong direction. 

Items Made of Iron :

For obvious reasons, anything made of iron should be left at home. The moist, salty air will rapidly degrade and corrode iron products. 

Dress Shoes :

Who wears dress shoes on a boat? The only reason you’d need a nice pair of shoes, be it leather or fancy high heels, is for a night on the town. Let’s just say this – you won’t find many people walking beachside in stilettos. Keep them in the closet – they’ll be waiting for you when you get back.

Anything of Sentiment :

It should go without saying, the ocean can be unforgiving. If you have a ring, bracelet, or necklace that means the world to you, don’t risk bringing it near the water. Valuables that end up overboard often become permanent possessions of the sea.

A 40 ft sailboat hit the Memorial Bridge in Portsmouth Saturday evening after losing its rudder, according to U.S. Marine Patrol.

They say two people were on the boat and were uninjured as a result of the crash.

Members of the U.S. Coast Guard were able to remove the boat off the bridge and it was later transported to Badgers Island Marina by Tow Boat U.S.

The New Hampshire Department of Transportation says the Memorial Bridge did not suffer any damage. They added that the boat saw some damage to the mast.

The U.S. Coast Guard was assisted by Kittery Harbor Master.

These are the best ways to stay cool right now without spending too much or going too far..

There really is nothing like summertime, but now the temperatures are here and you may find yourself looking for some respite. One tried-and-true way to stay cool through this heat wave is diving into the water, from jumping in the lake to learning a new skill such as sailing or paddleboarding.

Here are eight ways to soak up the cool without spending too much or going too far:

1. Find a pool to jump into

The Chicago Park District manages 50 outdoor pools across the city, along with 27 indoor pools. The city’s outdoor pools opened Monday and close just before Chicago Public Schools resume in August, according to the park district. Open swim is free, while lap swimming requires a membership ($25 for one month or $42 for three months).

Single day pool passes for purchase

• Some Chicago hotels sell day passes to their pools. At the InterContinental, a day pass to enjoy one of the oldest pools in the city is $40 for adults and $25 for kids. The pass also includes access to the hotel’s sauna and fitness center. 505 N. Michigan Ave.
• The Robey in Wicker Park sells day passes to its Cabana Club, a rooftop bar that has a small pool — better suited for a quick dip than a full pool day. Adult tickets are $15 during the week and $30 on the weekends (kids are $10 any day of the week) and include access to amenities such as Wi-Fi, towel service, a welcome drink and more. 2018 W. • Some gyms, like Life Time at One Chicago, also offer a day pass for $50 , which includes pool access. 15 W. Chicago Ave.

Suburban water parks with nonresident passes

• Orland Park’s Centennial Park Aquatic Center has water slides and a lazy river. Day passes for non-Orland Park residents are $25 Monday–Thursday and $26 on weekends and holidays. 15600 West Ave, Orland Park.
• The Heritage Park Family Aquatic Center in Wheeling is a massive outdoor water park featuring large, faux rock structures and waterfalls. There are diving boards, a sand play area and waterslides. Day passes are $15, and kids younger than 2 get in free. 105 Community Blvd., Wheeling.
• One of the largest water parks in the area, Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center in Des Plaines, has multiple water slides, cliff dives and a zero-depth pool to soak in. General admission is $20 for adults, and $17.75 for kids 17 and younger and seniors 60 and older. 2025 Miner St., Des Plaines.

2. Play at a splash pad

From June to August, dozens of local parks offer spray features — AKA splash pads — that are perfect for the young (and young at heart) to cool off on a hot day.

Perhaps the most visible splash pad in the city is the Crown Fountain in Millennium Park , which includes two 50-foot towers with a shallow pool in between. Designed by artist Jaume Plensa, the fountain is a boost to both public art and a welcome chance to cool off. 201 E. Randolph St.

The city also has a handful of water playgrounds , many of which are adjacent to outdoor swimming pools.

Chicago’s beach season runs through Labor Day.

3. Take a trip to the beach

One of the best — and easiest — ways to cool off in the summertime is to hop in Lake Michigan. With 26 miles of lakefront access to enjoy, there is no shortage of options. The city’s beach season runs through Labor Day.

Some favorites include:

• Montrose Beach , where there’s a dog-friendly beach and ample bird watching alike. Montrose is also Chicago’s only beach that allows kiteboarding. 4400 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
• Ohio Street Beach , which offers lockers for swimmers to protect their belongings. Whether just taking a dip or training for the triathlon, bring your own lock. 600 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
• Margaret T. Burroughs Beach — AKA, 31st Street Beach — boasts some of the best views of the skyline. 3100 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive .

• 63rd Street Beach is one of Chicago’s largest beaches and also features one of the city’s biggest and oldest beach houses, which was completed in 1919. The beach also has a nonmotorized boat launch. 6300 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

4. Rent a boat

Whether on the river or the lake, getting out on a boat is the perfect way to enjoy a summer day. Luckily, there are so many options, from the adventurous to the laid back.

Chicago Electric Boat Company ’s diverse fleet of boats ranges from comfortable cruisers such as the Duffy electric boats (rentals from $155), which are prime for sitting back and relaxing with drinks and snacks on the water; to modern classics like the Retro Boats, which are refurbished and retrofitted with eco-friendly electric motors (rentals from $145). Chicago Electric Boat Company has four locations on the river: at Marina City , the Chicago Water Plaza , the Chicago Riverwalk downtown and at the new Rockwell on the River on the North Branch. 300 N. State St. Marina Level – Unit EE. You can even hire a certified captain to drive if your whole crew wants to take advantage of a day on the water without the stress of manning the ship.

Chicagoans are likely familiar with one of the most popular boat experiences on the Chicago River: The Chicago Architecture Foundation’s boat tour (from $54). 112 E. Wacker Drive.

Multiple companies offer kayaking tours of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

5. Go paddling

Kayak Chicago , Urban Kayaks and Wateriders offer tours at multiple locations along the river and Lake Michigan.

The city’s boathouses are also a great place to rent a kayak or canoe to paddle the water. You can rent a canoe or kayak from Chicago River Canoe & Kayak at the Clark Park Boathouse (3400 N. Rockwell); a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddle board from the Lincoln Park Boat Club at the Lincoln Park Boathouse (2341 N. Cannon Drive); and kayaks from REI at Ping Tom Memorial Park Boathouse in Chinatown (300 W. 19th St.).

Chicago’s yacht clubs offer sailing lessons to kids and adults.

6. Take a sail

Chicago’s yacht clubs offer sailing lessons to both adults and kids brand new to the sport. All the courses get new sailors out on the water and cover the basic skills you’ll need to be comfortable setting sail.

• Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club has four-week adult sailing lessons at different levels. They also offer a “women on the water” course, designed by and for women sailors. Courses are $385 for non-club members. The club also offers a variety of youth sailing programs ; prices vary. 601 W. Montrose Ave.
• Columbia Sailing School ’s learn-to-sail introductory course teaches all the sailing basics over two sessions ($220). Youth summer sailing programs are also offered. 111 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
• The Chicago Yacht Club ’s sailing education program is spread out across three sessions and costs $730 for non-club members. Summer sailing school for youngsters is broken up by age group. 400 E. Monroe St.
• Jackson Park Yacht Club ’s learn-to-sail program is led by seasoned sailor Erica Trejo. The three-session courses include both classroom and on-the-water instruction and cost $499 for non-club members. Junior sailing classes are also available. 6400 S. Promontory Drive.

7. Try out rowing

No matter if you’re an experienced rower or brand new to the sport, you can join the city’s vibrant rowing community. The Chicago Rowing Foundation (CRF) hosts camps, clinics and seasonal teams from its location out of the Clark Park Boathouse . Adults can sign up online for a learn-to-row class (from $200); youth can join the summer or fall camp to prepare for teams that run during the school year. 3400 N. Rockwell St.

The Lincoln Park Boat Club , which rows out of the Lincoln Park Boathouse, Clark Park Boathouse and Lathrop Homes Boathouse, also offers youth teams and camps. Its nine-session learn-to-row courses for adults (from $310) are popular for beginner rowers. 2341 N. Cannon Drive.

You can take stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, lessons on Lake Michigan.

8. Stand up for paddleboarding

If you’re up for a different kind of challenge, give stand-up paddleboarding — also called SUP — a go on Lake Michigan.

If you’re new to the sport and want to give it a try with some help, local outfitter Chicago SUP offers private lessons ($100) and group lessons (from $75) from its locations at North Avenue Beach and Diversey Harbor.

Further north at Montrose Beach, Kayak Chicago also rents stand-up paddleboards on the lakefront. Closer to downtown, Urban Kayaks offers rentals at Monroe Harbor.

If you’re a yoga fan, Chicago SUP’s on-paddleboard yoga class (from $75) challenges your balance while stretching your body. You can even take their full moon SUP yoga class on Lake Michigan under the glow of the night sky.

Tip for first-timers: You’ll want to pick a nonwindy day to avoid the waves. We also recommend bringing a dry bag for your wallet and phone, waterproof sandals (such as Chacos ) and a carabiner to clip your keys to your belt loop so you don’t drop them in the lake.

SailGP Christchurch will not return in 2025 as league withdraws from hosting agreement

SailGP will not return to Christchurch in 2025 after the league withdrew from its hosting agreement with ChristchurchNZ for the event.

The Herald understands a New Zealand event is still expected to be included on the calendar.

“SailGP continues to work with its partners in New Zealand and internationally to finalise its Season 5 schedule, which will be announced imminently,” a SailGP spokesperson said.

“This includes an expanded event calendar, with exciting new and return venues and a minimum 13-event schedule. At this stage, it is too early to confirm specific venues beyond those cities already announced, which include a return to Abu Dhabi and New York and the first-ever SailGP event in Geneva, Switzerland.”

SailGP’s move away from Christchurch comes on the back of an event impacted by marine life in March, with the opening day of racing called off due to a dolphin sighting on the race course.

While the second day of racing was able to go ahead without a hitch and served up one of the best days of racing in the league’s history, SailGP chief executive Sir Russell Coutts cast doubt on the league returning to the venue.

Lyttleton Harbour was voted as the league’s best location to sail in an anonymous poll conducted among SailGP athletes following their event in Dubai late in 2023. However, speaking to the Herald earlier this year, Great Britain strategist Hannah Mills said there were pros and cons for whether the league should return to the venue in 2025 after the way things played out this year.

“It’s the most amazing place to sail. It’s really beautiful, so many people came to watch, the conditions were incredible – for a sailor it’s perfect. But we have to be more conscious around the places that we go and the effects that we have and the traces that we leave,” Mills said.

“For me, if a venue, any venue, is not suitable from an environmental or species point of view, then it really has to be a huge part of the conversation and made sure that the right decision’s made.”

Initially, it was expected Christchurch would host the event for the third straight year in 2025, after taking it on at short notice this year when Auckland was deemed unsuitable as a host because the land wanted for use as a spectator zone on Wynyard Quarter was not cleared for use.

When SailGP announced it would bring events to New Zealand, the league signed a four-year agreement which would see Christchurch and Auckland hosting on alternate years beginning with the Christchurch event in 2023. That iteration was also halted by dolphins on the course however, racing was able to get underway on both days.

Auckland has been discussed as a potential host for 2025, and Tataki Auckland Unlimited Head of Major Events Michelle Hooper said those conversations were still ongoing.

In a release, ChristchurchNZ said after the intention to host two events in New Zealand had been fulfilled, it accepted SailGP’s decision to withdraw from the 2025 hosting agreement.

“The decision follows two iterations of the ITM New Zealand Sail Grand Prix in Christchurch, as part of a four-year partnership with ChristchurchNZ, Tātaki Auckland Unlimited and New Zealand Major Events. The original agreement, which included Christchurch and Auckland alternating as hosts between Seasons 3 and 6, was varied in 2023 when SailGP shifted from Auckland due to land restrictions surrounding the venue. With the original intention to host two events fulfilled, ChristchurchNZ has accepted SailGP’s decision to withdraw from the 2025 hosting agreement.”

A post-event report by Deloitte outlined the benefits of the March event, which amassed a total economic impact of US$20.7 million ($33.7m) for the host region, with a gross expenditure of US$9.5m by SailGP and competing teams. It was the largest-ever ticketed sailing event, with more than 20,000 fans across the weekend.

The current season heads into its penultimate event this weekend, with the teams taking to the waters of New York, before the season finale in San Francisco in July. As it stands, the Black Foils hold an 11-point buffer on the season leaderboard, with Spain and Australia currently rounding out the top three.
