Yacht Week vs Sail Week: Which Is Better?

Yacht Week and Sail Week Croatia are both well-established travel companies offering various sailing routes around Croatia. This article is a side-by-side comparison of the two.

As a former yacht crew member, I get asked two questions pretty often:

1️⃣ First, is working on a superyacht really like what you see on Below Deck ? 2️⃣ What’s the difference between The Yacht Week and Sail Week Croatia?

The Yacht Week, the original company in this space, essentially invented this type of holiday. And Sail Week offers excellent value for money.

They both provide instagramable opportunities at every turn, and the best option for you will depend on your individual needs.

Let’s get started with what set’s these brands apart!

The Yacht Week is heavily focused on the party and music festival crowd . Their website offers a tasty selection of floating festivals and unique events by partnering with festival organisers and record labels.

If you are looking for remote island shenanigans soundtracked by some of the world’s best underground DJs, then The Yacht Week is a solid choice.

Sail Week is an ABTA member in the UK, and they offer financial protection on all their travel products. They strongly emphasise creating a memorable party atmosphere but with the added twist of offering chic excursions to sweeten the deal .

⚖️ Product Range Comparison

A few sailing routes can be compared directly, and they are in Croatia and Greece. However, for the sake of this article, I have only compared routes that are similar to each other.

The Yacht Week (TYW) Sailing Route Range

The Yacht Week features eight different sail routes for you to choose from . All of The Yacht Week routes are listed below:

  • Hot Creations
  • Original Route
  • Athens Route , Greece
  • Ultra Festival Route
  • Hideout Festival Route
  • Tahiti Route , Polynesia
  • BVI Route , Caribbean

All the routes last for 7 days (6 nights), keeping with the mantra ‘yacht week’. The majority of the routes are in Croatia, and they follow the same itinerary except for the Hideout Festival route.

The Hideout Festival route begins and ends near the seaside city of Zadar. In comparison, the other Croatian routes start and finish in the town of Split.

Sail Week Croatia Sailing Route Range

All these routes last an entire week, and there 6 to choose from depending on if you want to party flat out or find a more balanced vibe. They can be seen below:

  • Party Route
  • Ultra Route
  • Dubrovnik Route
  • Montenegro Route

The Party Route and Ultra Route are party-focused routes. And the balanced vibes are on the Dubrovnik, Athens and Montenegro routes.

Route Range Winner – The Yacht Week

📦 Package Comparison

Both brands have similar package options. However, the most significant difference is that Sail Week offers a Bring Your Own Booze (BYOB) option , which considerably impacts the price you pay for a given package.

The Yacht Week Packages

You can select from 4 different package types, namely:

  • Build your own

Monohull (43-46ft); Capacity 9 (4 cabins)

  • Air-conditioning

Monohull(47 – 60ft); Capacity 10(5 cabins)

Catamaran(40-45ft); Capacity 10(4 cabins)

The difference is the type of yacht your money gets you here. Classic packages offer monohull yachts in the 43-46ft range, and Luxury packages afford you access to catamarans in the 40-45ft range.

The luxury packages also include all the amenities available like air-conditioning, a host and half board meals. You can add a host and air-conditioning to the Build Your Own package.

Sail Week Croatia Packages

The options are below:

  • Deluxe Catamaran
  • Full Yacht (ideal for larger groups)

Monohull (43-50ft); Capacity 8-10 (4-5 cabins)

  • Food package

Monohull (43-50ft); Capacity 8-10 (4-5 cabins); Built 2016+

Catamaran(40-45ft); Capacity 8(4 cabins)

The standard packages get you a cabin on a monohull yacht in the 43-50ft range. Unfortunately, there is no option to add amenities like air-conditioning or a host to these packages.

The Deluxe Catamaran offers air-conditioning, a host, food package, and half-board included. The yacht size is in the 40-45ft range.

If you are a group, you can select between monohull or catamarans when using the Full Yacht Package with the option to add any of the Sail Week amenities.

Package Option Winner – Tie

🏝️ Route Comparison

*To compare apples to apples, this article will focus on similar routes between the two brands. First up is the flagship routes of each brand, namely; Original Route (TYW) vs the Party Route (SWC). Followed by both Athens Routes.

Original Route vs Party Route

Tyw – original route.

The direction of sailing/travel for the week is: Trogir > Bol > Natural Bay > Hvar > Vis > Trogir.

bol beach croatia week

There are 10 weeks that this route runs, beginning on the last weekend of May and ending in mid-September.

Prices for peak summer (July) are considerably more than the end of the season (September), which is to be expected due to the demand.

You can select from 4 different package types: classic, premium, luxury, or BYO.

It’s hard to beat this route if you are looking for a party. The week lineup is simply jam-packed, and nobody does this better than The Yacht Week.

For your money, you’ll get an array of party shenanigans to experience:

  • Opening party in Trogir
  • Circle rafts floating festival
  • Dockside disco at Fort George
  • Buzz Boat party (a boat with DJ booth and Void Acoustics)
  • Carpe Diem party in Hvar
  • Tunnel raft party (like you see in the videos)
  • Headline DJs, including the like of Claptone and Gorgon City

Add in seaside yoga sessions, a castle hike in Hvar and even convertible VW Beetle exploring in Vis , and you have more than enough to keep you entertained for an entire week.

Yacht Week prides itself on being able to throw the best parties you’re likely to experience, and it makes them different in this regard from Sail Week Croatia.

SWC – Party Route

The direction of sailing/travel for the week is: Split > Supetar > Makarska > Bol > Vis > Vinogradisce Bay > Hvar > Split .

hvar harbour sailing yachts at anchor

This route has 13 different weeks for you to choose between. For example, beginning the first week of June and ending the first week of September.

Each week, you can choose different packages depending on your budget or group size. The package options are:

The party atmosphere is also up there with the best, and you can expect everything from cave parties & beach parties to the infamous circle raft floating festival in the busiest weeks.

What makes Sail Week different from Yacht Week is the diversity of extra activities they offer. Everything from Sky Diving to Fly Boarding is an option for you, although not included in your package price.

Flagship Route Winner – The Yacht Week

Athens Route (TYW) vs Athens Route (SWC.)

The direction of sailing/travel for the week is: Athens > Poros > Porto Heli > Ermioni > Natural Bay > Hydra > Athens.

You can choose from 10 available weeks from the end of May until the first week of September. This route begins and ends in Athens, where you will get to visit the Acropolis overlooking the city below.

There is a good dose of partying thrown in with the infamous Yacht Week circle raft (think boutique floating festival), day parties at Cavo Bianco, and beach parties on sandy beaches, complete with cocktail-sipping DJs.

In addition, there are wellness elements to enjoy in the form of sunset hikes and water volleyball to keep the hangover at bay.

The emerald waters of the Greek islands are famed for their marine wildlife, so dolphin spotting is almost certainly something you can bank on.

The direction of sailing/travel for the week is: Athens > Agistri > Hydra > Ermioni > Spetses > Dokos > Poros > Athens.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by SailWeek (@sailweek)

In total, there are 14 allotted weeks available, and they start in June and run through until the middle of September.

The focus of this route is more toward the activity side, with the option to do stand up paddle boarding, wine tasting, quad biking, hiking and even donkey riding if you desire.

There is nightlife and partying on the islands you visit, but these are not organised by Sail Week, unlike Yacht Week on this same route.

If you are looking for hidden gems in the Greek archipelago, then this route will delight you with secluded coves, charming villages and unique coastal pine forests to explore.

Atehns Route Winner – TYW

💸 Price Comparison

Okay, so here we are at the all-important price comparison of the two. For simplicity sake, I’ve compared apples to apples again and taken the first week of August (6th-13th) for the Original Route (TYW) and the Party Route (SWC) and staked them side-by-side.

To keep it as balanced as possible, I’ve further compared each of their package tiers, and prices are per person (p.p)

  • Classic – €1000 p.p
  • Premium – €1725 p.p
  • Luxury – €2360 p.p

For the build your own package, the yacht selected was a 50ft Catamaran for a group of 10 people – a total of €2919 p.p (host and skipper included).

Local payment of 600 Croatian Kuna (~€80) per person applies to all bookings.

  • Standard – €826 p.p
  • Premium – €1058 p.p
  • Deluxe – €1490 p.p

For the build your own package, the yacht selected was a 50ft Catamaran for a group of 10 people – a total of €2413 p.p (host and skipper included).

Winner – Sail Week

🏆 Overall Winner

This Yacht Week vs Sail Week review demonstrates that The Yacht Week is the superior party holiday week due to its strong following and 15-years of experience.

TYW features more unforgettable parties and world-class DJs than any of its competitors. But, those factors also make TYW significantly more expensive.

Both premium brands provide similar experiences, and SWC is an excellent choice for fun-seeking revellers on a stricter budget. Their mix of parties and chic extra activities offers fantastic value when considering their premium options.

You could argue that you get better value for your money with Sail Week from the fact it’s 7 days & nights, as opposed to Yacht Week’s 6 nights.

Both are aimed at those who love travel and music festivals. The Croatian music festival scene is well renowned in Europe. With the option of these floating festivals, it is now truly world-class.

Well over 100 yachts participate each year, ranging in size from 24 feet to over 100 feet. The Regatta attracts all types of yachts from serious racing boats including state-of-the-art, high-tech racing machines to a variety of performance cruising and cruising boats and even features a Club Class for less serious racers who want to be part of the on-the-water action.

The sight of all these yachts is unforgettable, both from vantage points on the shore and from spectator boats carrying onlookers alongside the races. The reputation of Antigua Sailing Week allows the event to attract some of the world’s top racing and performance cruising boats and some of the most famous professional sailors in the world.  You don’t need to own a personal yacht as it’s easy to ‘Rock up and Race’ with one of many available race charter outfits.  If the highly competitive race class isn’t what you are looking for, luxurious bareboats can be booked through  Sunsail Moorings and Dream Yacht Charter.

For five days crews are challenged with a variety of coastal race courses encouraging tacking duels around the buoys – all in the picture-perfect setting of the deep blue Caribbean Sea off Antigua’s south coast with the ever-present trade winds. The idyllic racing is enhanced by sailors retiring to Antigua Yacht Club for passionate post-race analysis and daily prize-givings which carry on into the evening. Hundreds of locals and visitors will continue partying well into the late hours but yacht crews know there is another day of racing so they leave the late night revelry for the others to finish.

After the week of ever-exciting racing, Antigua Sailing Week draws to a close in the romantic historic Nelson’s Dockyard with the final awards presentation attended by owners, skippers and crews, with their friends, well-wishers and race officials, alongside Antigua’s government representatives including the Governor General to present the awards.

This exciting event is followed the next day by Dockyard Day and the Beating of the Retreat as the Antiguan flag is lowered to signal the close of Antigua Sailing Week for yet another year.  It is a truly fitting end to a week of glorious racing.

The Notice of Race, Sailing Instructions and other official documents can be found on Yachtscoring, com.

To enter Antigua Sailing Week 2024 click here.

This Class is open to sailors who want to participate in the on-the-water action but who may not take their racing as seriously as others and don’t want to incur all the usual expenses. If you are racing to win, this is not the class for you!

  • The entry fee is US $9 per foot of measured overall length.
  • Acceptance of entries into the Club Class is solely at the discretion of the Organising Authority. High performance boats, boats using high tech sails or spars, boats that have previously done well under CSA racing or boats with highly trained crews will not be accepted into the Club Class.
  • The Class will be scored using Variable Simplified CSA Handicap. Boats that already have full CSA Ratings may enter the Class but will still be issued a CSA Simplified Rating, at no cost. Boats without a CSA Rating must request a CSA Simplified Rating at a cost of US $50 by accessing this link . All boats should endeavor to have their Simplified CSA Handicap a few days BEFORE the close of registration.
  • Boats may enter as jib and main (pole or no pole) only or with spinnakers.
  • After each day’s racing, individual ratings will be adjusted up or down according to the following formula: New Rating = Old Rating X Equalizing Factor X Reward Factor . Yachts that do well (better than 4th place) will have their rating adjusted up while yachts that do not do as well (worse than 4 th place) will have their rating adjusted down. The newly adjusted rating becomes your rating for next day’s race. This will result in tighter racing as the week progresses with more opportunities for all teams to experience the thrill of a podium position. Equalizing Factor : Calculated as the ratio of each finisher’s corrected time to the 4th place boat corrected time to a minimum and maximum amount of 0.950 to 1.050, inclusive. Performance Reward Factor : This does not vary for the duration of the regatta. 1 st = .990, 2 nd = .994, 3 rd = .997, 4 th = 1.000, 5 th = 1.003, 6 th = 1.006, 7 th = 1.010, 8 th = 1.011, 9 th = 1.012, 10 th = 1.013, 11 th = 1.014, 12 th and below = 1.015 If the boat has no finish time (DNC, DNS, DNF, etc), then New Rating = Old Rating . For the top three finishers, the New Rating will not be less than the Old Rating. For finishers below fourth place, the New Rating will not be more than the Old Rating.
  • All class participants must accept the Variable Simplified CSA Handicap procedures.
  • The CSA Simplified Rating or the Variable Simplified CSA Handicap procedures are not subject to competitor protest.
  • There will be one race per day for the Class with no throw-outs.
  • Courses will be 2-3 hours long with less emphasis on windward/leeward performance in as much as that is possible within our geographic and mark placement limitations.
  • Club Class entries will not be eligible for The Royal Southern Yacht Club Challenge.
  • This list of rules is NOT final. Please check back for possible updates.

New 23.5-metre Explorer Sailing Yacht Amundsen Launched

KM Yachtbuilders Pelagic 77 Amundsen

Last week, KM Yachtbuilders launched the 23.5-metre sailing yacht ‘Amundsen’, built at the shipyard in Makkum, Netherlands. Following in the footsteps of her sister ship, ‘ Vinson of Antarctica ‘, Amundsen is the second hull in this series .

The name ‘Amundsen’ is a tribute to the great Norwegian polar explorer Roald Amundsen. Constructed with an aluminium hull and superstructure, she features naval architecture by Tony Castro (the supervisor is Peter Wilson of MCM Newport). Amundsen has a 6.2-meter beam accentuated by a distinctive red stripe near her waterline. Featuring two carbon masts meticulously designed to evenly distribute her sail area, complemented by manually operable sail systems such as winches and jib rollers. Inside, she offers a dedicated pilothouse and spacious sitting room with a galley.

KM Yachtbuilders Pelagic 77 Amundsen

She can accommodate up to eight guests comfortably. Distinguished from her sister ship, ‘ Vinson of Antarctica ‘, ‘Amundsen’ is an enhanced iteration with several modifications. Notably, her propulsion system sets her apart, boasting modern, eco-friendly engines aimed at minimizing environmental impact.

Additional enhancements include: ● Increased standing height in the pilothouse ● Removal of the centerboard from the fixed keel ● Integration of two Volvo engines instead of Yanmar engines ● Expanded engine room capacity

Team effort

This project represents the collective effort of an incredible team, united by a shared spirit of adventure and a dedication to innovation and sustainability.

sailing

Eeuwe Kooi, founder of KM Yachtbuilders: “ This project represents the collective effort of an incredible team, united by a shared spirit of adventure and a dedication to innovation and sustainability. ”

Both Skip Novak, the renowned ocean sailor and commercial director of Pelagic Expeditions, and owner Nicolás Ibáñez Scott, a Chilean entrepreneur and adventurer, were also present during the launch. Skip Novak explains the idea behind the second Pelagic 77 Amundsen: “ The decision to build a sister ship for the Vinson of Antarctica was based on the success of this design concept. This yields valuable projects that contribute to education for schools in Chile and Spain. These include a north-south crossing of the Atlantic Ocean to the southern hemisphere, where the Vinson now calls South America its home territory. “

KM Yachtbuilders Pelagic 77 Amundsen

Nicolás Ibáñez Scott adds the vision and values for Vinson of Antarctica and Amundsen: “ In an era where much of the world has been mapped and explored, Amundsen’s journeys remind us that the true essence of adventure lies not just in discovering new places but in the courage to dream, to dare, and to embark on journeys that test our limits and expand our horizons. ”

Wallywind110 Sailing Yacht

Founded by Italian entrepreneur Luca Bassani in 1994, Wally initially specialized in sailing boats but has since expanded into building high-tech motor yachts . The new wallywind110, which was fittingly launched on the yard’s 30th anniversary, honors that sailing legacy yet is thoroughly modern in design.

Measuring 100 feet from sheer bow to open stern, the newcomer features a sleek carbon hull, a low-profile coachroof, twin rudders, and a telescopic keel. Showcasing naval architecture German firm Judel/Vrolijk & Co, the first hull is finished in a bright metallic paint that changes color depending on the light.

Wally’s in-house design team worked with Italian firm Santa Maria Magnolfi to create an exterior and interior with a spacious feel. The team decided to relocate all the technical equipment to the stern in order to create a large, 860-square-foot cockpit comparable to that of a sailing superyacht of 197 feet or more. The interior layout includes multiple entertaining areas, an open-plan salon, a full-beam owner’s cabin, three guest cabins, an office, and accommodation for five crew.

The second wallywind110 is already under construction, with delivery expected soon.

The NBA champion Boston Celtics will be celebrated in Boston on Friday, June 21, with a rolling rally parade.

The parade will begin at 11 a.m. on Friday in front of the TD Garden at the corner of Causeway Street and Legends Way. It will then pass by City Hall Plaza and the Boston Common on Tremont Street before ending on Boylston Street near the Hynes Convention Center, city officials said.

Celtics players will ride in the city’s Duck Boats, which has become a tradition this century. The 2024 Celtics are the city’s 13th champions among its four major sports teams — the Celtics, Patriots, Red Sox and Bruins. The Celtics’ win was the first champion from that group of teams since the 2019 Patriots won their sixth Super Bowl.

Officials said parking on some streets will be prohibited starting just after midnight Friday morning, and vehicles will start getting towed after that point. Streets along the route will be closed to vehicles starting at 9 a.m.

The MBTA will have additional service on all lines, and a modified commuter rail schedule will be in place. Anyone heading into the city for the parade or for any other reason was urged to take public transportation. Officials said riders should consider buying roundtrip tickets in advance.

The parade will happen at the end of an expected heat wave this week. High temperatures are expected to be lower Friday than earlier in the week, but it is still expected to be hot. Officials urged people to hydrate properly and seek out shade if they start feeling bad.

Police and other first responders will be stationed along the route if anyone needs help, officials said.

The victory Monday night was the team’s first in 16 years and the franchise’s 18th overall, which is an NBA record.

A man jumps into Lake Michigan with the Chicago skyline behind him

The Chicago heat is no joke this year. Here are some tried and true ways to stay cool in the city — and the suburbs — this summer.

Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Sun-Times

Hot? Here's a guide to how to cool off in the water, from public and private pools to water parks to paddle board rentals

These are the best ways to stay cool right now without spending too much or going too far..

There really is nothing like summertime, but now the temperatures are here and you may find yourself looking for some respite. One tried-and-true way to stay cool through this heat wave is diving into the water, from jumping in the lake to learning a new skill such as sailing or paddleboarding.

Here are eight ways to soak up the cool without spending too much or going too far:

Sip_TheRobey 14.JPG

1. Find a pool to jump into

The Chicago Park District manages 50 outdoor pools across the city, along with 27 indoor pools. The city’s outdoor pools opened Monday and close just before Chicago Public Schools resume in August, according to the park district. Open swim is free, while lap swimming requires a membership ($25 for one month or $42 for three months).

Single day pool passes for purchase

  • Some Chicago hotels sell day passes to their pools. At the InterContinental, a day pass to enjoy one of the oldest pools in the city is $40 for adults and $25 for kids. The pass also includes access to the hotel’s sauna and fitness center. 505 N. Michigan Ave.
  • The Robey in Wicker Park sells day passes to its Cabana Club, a rooftop bar that has a small pool — better suited for a quick dip than a full pool day. Adult tickets are $15 during the week and $30 on the weekends (kids are $10 any day of the week) and include access to amenities such as Wi-Fi, towel service, a welcome drink and more. 2018 W. North Ave.
  • Some gyms, like Life Time at One Chicago, also offer a day pass for $50 , which includes pool access. 15 W. Chicago Ave.

Suburban water parks with nonresident passes

  • Orland Park’s Centennial Park Aquatic Center has water slides and a lazy river. Day passes for non-Orland Park residents are $25 Monday–Thursday and $26 on weekends and holidays. 15600 West Ave, Orland Park.
  • The Heritage Park Family Aquatic Center in Wheeling is a massive outdoor water park featuring large, faux rock structures and waterfalls. There are diving boards, a sand play area and waterslides. Day passes are $15, and kids younger than 2 get in free. 105 Community Blvd., Wheeling.
  • One of the largest water parks in the area, Mystic Waters Family Aquatic Center in Des Plaines, has multiple water slides, cliff dives and a zero-depth pool to soak in. General admission is $20 for adults, and $17.75 for kids 17 and younger and seniors 60 and older. 2025 Miner St., Des Plaines.

Millennium Park's Crown Fountain

Millennium Park’s Crown Fountain offers a way to stay cool while experiencing public art.

2. Play at a splash pad

From June to August, dozens of local parks offer spray features — AKA splash pads — that are perfect for the young (and young at heart) to cool off on a hot day.

Perhaps the most visible splash pad in the city is the Crown Fountain in Millennium Park , which includes two 50-foot towers with a shallow pool in between. Designed by artist Jaume Plensa, the fountain is a boost to both public art and a welcome chance to cool off. 201 E. Randolph St.

The city also has a handful of water playgrounds , many of which are adjacent to outdoor swimming pools.

3. Take a trip to the beach

One of the best — and easiest — ways to cool off in the summertime is to hop in Lake Michigan. With 26 miles of lakefront access to enjoy, there is no shortage of options. The city’s beach season runs through Labor Day.

Some favorites include:

  • Montrose Beach , where there’s a dog-friendly beach and ample bird watching alike. Montrose is also Chicago’s only beach that allows kiteboarding. 4400 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • Ohio Street Beach , which offers lockers for swimmers to protect their belongings. Whether just taking a dip or training for the triathlon, bring your own lock. 600 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • Margaret T. Burroughs Beach — AKA, 31st Street Beach — boasts some of the best views of the skyline. 3100 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive .
  • Promontory Point in Hyde Park has lake access and trails for walking or biking. Check out this full WBEZ guide to the park . 5491 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • 63rd Street Beach is one of Chicago’s largest beaches and also features one of the city’s biggest and oldest beach houses, which was completed in 1919. The beach also has a nonmotorized boat launch. 6300 S. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.

4. Rent a boat

Whether on the river or the lake, getting out on a boat is the perfect way to enjoy a summer day. Luckily, there are so many options, from the adventurous to the laid back.

Chicago Electric Boat Company ’s diverse fleet of boats ranges from comfortable cruisers such as the Duffy electric boats (rentals from $155), which are prime for sitting back and relaxing with drinks and snacks on the water; to modern classics like the Retro Boats, which are refurbished and retrofitted with eco-friendly electric motors (rentals from $145). Chicago Electric Boat Company has four locations on the river: at Marina City , the Chicago Water Plaza , the Chicago Riverwalk downtown and at the new Rockwell on the River on the North Branch. 300 N. State St. Marina Level – Unit EE. You can even hire a certified captain to drive if your whole crew wants to take advantage of a day on the water without the stress of manning the ship.

Chicagoans are likely familiar with one of the most popular boat experiences on the Chicago River: The Chicago Architecture Foundation’s boat tour (from $54). 112 E. Wacker Drive.

Kayakers in the water.

Multiple companies offer kayaking tours of the Chicago River and Lake Michigan.

Manuel Martinez/WBEZ

5. Go paddling

Kayak Chicago , Urban Kayaks and Wateriders offer tours at multiple locations along the river and Lake Michigan.

The city’s boathouses are also a great place to rent a kayak or canoe to paddle the water. You can rent a canoe or kayak from Chicago River Canoe & Kayak at the Clark Park Boathouse (3400 N. Rockwell); a canoe, kayak or stand-up paddle board from the Lincoln Park Boat Club at the Lincoln Park Boathouse (2341 N. Cannon Drive); and kayaks from REI at Ping Tom Memorial Park Boathouse in Chinatown (300 W. 19th St.).

This WBEZ guide to kayaking outside the city includes more than a dozen other recommendations.

Chicago’s yacht clubs offer sailing lessons to kids and adults.

Chicago’s yacht clubs offer sailing lessons to kids and adults.

6. Take a sail

Chicago’s yacht clubs offer sailing lessons to both adults and kids brand new to the sport. All the courses get new sailors out on the water and cover the basic skills you’ll need to be comfortable setting sail.

  • Chicago Corinthian Yacht Club has four-week adult sailing lessons at different levels. They also offer a “women on the water” course, designed by and for women sailors. Courses are $385 for non-club members. The club also offers a variety of youth sailing programs ; prices vary. 601 W. Montrose Ave.
  • Columbia Sailing School ’s learn-to-sail introductory course teaches all the sailing basics over two sessions ($220). Youth summer sailing programs are also offered. 111 N. DuSable Lake Shore Drive.
  • The Chicago Yacht Club ’s sailing education program is spread out across three sessions and costs $730 for non-club members. Summer sailing school for youngsters is broken up by age group. 400 E. Monroe St.
  • Jackson Park Yacht Club ’s learn-to-sail program is led by seasoned sailor Erica Trejo. The three-session courses include both classroom and on-the-water instruction and cost $499 for non-club members. Junior sailing classes are also available. 6400 S. Promontory Drive.

7. Try out rowing

No matter if you’re an experienced rower or brand new to the sport, you can join the city’s vibrant rowing community. The Chicago Rowing Foundation (CRF) hosts camps, clinics and seasonal teams from its location out of the Clark Park Boathouse . Adults can sign up online for a learn-to-row class (from $200); youth can join the summer or fall camp to prepare for teams that run during the school year. 3400 N. Rockwell St.

The Lincoln Park Boat Club , which rows out of the Lincoln Park Boathouse, Clark Park Boathouse and Lathrop Homes Boathouse, also offers youth teams and camps. Its nine-session learn-to-row courses for adults (from $310) are popular for beginner rowers. 2341 N. Cannon Drive.

HEAT-061724-17.jpg

You can take stand-up paddleboarding, or SUP, lessons on Lake Michigan.

Tyler Pasciak LaRiviere/Chicago Sun-Times

8. Stand up for paddleboarding

If you’re up for a different kind of challenge, give stand-up paddleboarding — also called SUP — a go on Lake Michigan.

If you’re new to the sport and want to give it a try with some help, local outfitter Chicago SUP offers private lessons ($100) and group lessons (from $75) from its locations at North Avenue Beach and Diversey Harbor.

Further north at Montrose Beach, Kayak Chicago also rents stand-up paddleboards on the lakefront. Closer to downtown, Urban Kayaks offers rentals at Monroe Harbor.

If you’re a yoga fan, Chicago SUP’s on-paddleboard yoga class (from $75) challenges your balance while stretching your body. You can even take their full moon SUP yoga class on Lake Michigan under the glow of the night sky.

Tip for first-timers: You’ll want to pick a nonwindy day to avoid the waves. We also recommend bringing a dry bag for your wallet and phone, waterproof sandals (such as Chacos ) and a carabiner to clip your keys to your belt loop so you don’t drop them in the lake.

Lake Michigan death: Woman who died after boat capsized near Winnetka ID'd

Teen boy also died Monday after falling from raft near Montrose Beach

WLS logo

CHICAGO (WLS) -- The woman found dead after a boat capsized Sunday night in Lake Michigan near Winnetka has been identified.

The Cook County Medical Examiner's Office identified the woman whose body was recovered Monday morning as 53-year-old Cristen Bolan.

ABC7 Chicago is now streaming 24/7. Click here to watch

The office did not immediately provide any additional information about Bolan.

On Sunday, Bolan and another woman sailed from Evanston in a 12-foot sailboat, before it capsized at dusk.

Around 2 a.m. Monday, the other woman swam about 2 miles to the shore of Tower Road Beach, asking for help, according to Winnetka fire officials.

The woman told authorities Bolan was still missing.

The Winnetka Fire Department began a search-and-rescue mission shortly after the first woman was found.

After hours of searching, the Coast Guard found Bolan's body around 7 a.m., about a mile off shore, north of Winnetka. She was taken into Chicago's Montrose Harbor.

The sailboat was found about 2 to 3 miles off shore, according to the fire department.

This comes as crews have not yet found a man, who reportedly fell off a boat on Saturday afternoon near the enclosed boating area, also known as the "Playpen," close to downtown Chicago.

A teen boy also died Monday, after falling off a raft near Montrose Beach on Chicago's North Side.

Later Monday, a couple was rescued by a passerby after struggling to swim near Montrose Harbor .

Melvin, Findlay and Burnham head the National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024

NEWPORT, Rhode Island (AP) — Pete Melvin, who helped design breakthrough boats for the America’s Cup as well as the Nacra 17 used in the Olympics, and Conn Findlay, who won Olympic medals in sailing and rowing, head the list of 12 inductees in the National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

As part of the firm M&M, Melvin helped design the giant trimaran that tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s BMW Oracle Racing used to win the 2010 America’s Cup in a one-off regatta against Alinghi of Switzerland’s giant catamaran. M&M also drafted the design rules for the 72-foot catamarans used in the 2013 America’s Cup, which ushered in foiling in sailing’s marquee regatta.

M&M designed the Nacra 17 catamaran that debuted in the 2016 Olympics. For the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, the Nacra 17 added foils. Melvin sailed in the 1988 Olympics and has won numerous national and world titles.

Findlay won a total of four Olympic medals, including a bronze medal with Dennis Conner in the Tempest class in 1976. In rowing, he won two golds and one bronze in coxed pairs. He sailed in the America’s Cup three times, including with winning skipper Ted Turner aboard Courageous in 1977.

Also entering the hall is Kevin Burnham, who won a silver medal in the 470 class in the 1992 Olympics with Morgan Reeser and then won gold with Paul Foerster in 2004.

In one of the most memorable races in Olympic history, Foerster and Burnham aggressively match-raced the British boat to the back of the fleet and stayed ahead the entire race to win the gold medal. At the finish line, Burnham, then 47, waved to race officials, let out a whoop and then did a backflip into the Saronic Gulf off Athens, barefoot and still wearing his sunglasses. Burnham died in 2020.

The induction will be Oct. 4-5 at the Chicago Yacht Club.

Among the other inductees are Jan C. O’Malley, a three-time US Sailing Yachtswoman of the Year and the first winner of the IYRU Women’s World Sailing Championship; Charles Ulmer, a national champion and race winner throughout the 1970s and 80s; and Richard Tillman, the 1965 Sailor of the Year who held national, North American and world titles in the Snipe, Finn, Laser, Sunfish and Windsurfing classes.

Also going into the hall are Franklin Wood; Allegra Mertz; brothers Eric Hall and Ben Hall; Gary Mull; and Carl Alberg.

Russian military exercises in the Caribbean: Here's what to expect

By Alex Sundby

Updated on: June 12, 2024 / 8:15 PM EDT / CBS News

Three Russian ships and a nuclear-powered submarine arrived in Cuban waters Wednesday ahead of military exercises  in the Caribbean. While the exercises aren't considered a threat to the U.S., American ships were deployed to shadow the Russians, U.S. officials told CBS News.

The Russian warships  were seen arriving in Havana's harbor on Wednesday morning and were expected to stay in Cuba until Monday. White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan told reporters on Air Force One on Wednesday the U.S. was closely monitoring the Russian ships.

"We have seen this kind of thing before and we expect to see this kind of thing again," Sullivan said.

The U.S. intelligence community has assessed that the submarine is nuclear powered but it isn't carrying nuclear weapons, CBS News national security correspondent David Martin reported. White House national security spokesman John Kirby told CBS News senior White House and political correspondent Ed O'Keefe last week that there was no indication nuclear weapons would be "at play" during the vessels' time in the Caribbean.

What Russian ships are in Cuba?

According to the Cuban Foreign Ministry, the three Russian ships are a frigate, a fleet oil tanker and a salvage tug. The three ships and the submarine headed across the Atlantic separately, Martin reported.

The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov, part of the Russian naval detachment visiting Cuba, arrives at Havana's harbor, June 12, 2024.

Russia has used the frigate, the Admiral Gorshkov, to test its Zircon hypersonic cruise missiles , according to the Reuters news agency.

Two American destroyers and two ships that tow sonar equipment behind them were shadowing the submarine, Martin reported. Another destroyer and a U.S. Coast Guard cutter were shadowing the three Russian ships. The U.S. Navy also used little sailboats fitted with cameras, known as sail drones, to shadow the Russian ships as they got close to Cuba.

The Admiral Gorshkov and the submarine carried out drills in the Atlantic that simulated a missile strike on enemy ships, the Russian Defense Ministry said Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.

The Russian frigate Admiral Gorshkov takes part in an exercise on the use of high-precision weapons in the Atlantic Ocean, in this still image from video released June 11, 2024.

While the Russian ships are in Cuba, the U.S. Navy ships shadowing them are expected to wait for the Russians and continue shadowing them when they leave port, Martin reported.

The ships' arrival in Havana — which the Cuban Foreign Ministry said was expected to include the fanfare of one Russian ship firing 21 salvos in a salute to Cuba — comes ahead of Russia carrying out air and naval exercises in the Caribbean in the coming weeks, Martin reported.

The exercises, which will include long-range bombers, will be the first simultaneous air and naval maneuvers Russia has carried out in the Caribbean since 2019, Martin reported. The exercises will be conducted over the summer, culminating in a worldwide naval exercise in the fall.

"Clearly this is them signaling their displeasure about what we're doing for Ukraine ," Kirby told O'Keefe. "So we're going to watch it, we're going to monitor it, it's not unexpected. … But we don't anticipate, we don't expect that there'll be any imminent threat or any threat at all, quite frankly, to American national security in the region, in the Caribbean region, or anywhere else."

The Russian ships are expected to head to Venezuela after Cuba, but it's unclear what the submarine will do, Martin reported.

The Russian nuclear-powered submarine Kazan and the frigate Admiral Gorshkov, part of the Russian naval detachment visiting Cuba, arrive at Havana's harbor, June 12, 2024.

What was the Cuban missile crisis?

The events in the Caribbean are different from the Cuban missile crisis that happened over 60 years ago. The 1962 crisis unfolded after the U.S. discovered launch sites in Cuba for Soviet ballistic nuclear missiles.

Over the course of 13 days, the crisis brought the Soviet Union and the U.S. dangerously close to nuclear war. A potential conflict was averted when the Kennedy administration reached a deal with the Kremlin for the missiles to be removed from Cuba.
