Spirit Yacht Regatta

A six-race series and a week of social events exclusively for Spirit yachts' owners, crew and guests.

Building on the success of the 2022 Spirit Regatta, the 2024 event programme has been designed to deliver fast paced racing for Spirit yachts from 37ft to 100ft+.

The fleet will take on a variety of passage, long inshore, and windward/leeward courses, providing a spectacle on the water for spectators and Corinthian-style competition for sailors. 

Taking inspiration from the Nioulargue match races at Les Voiles de St Tropez, this year’s race programme incorporates an exciting new addition and pays homage to a historic sailing tradition. A day has been allocated for Spirit owners and skippers to challenge fellow yachts to a match race, adding a new level of competition to the week.

Spirit Yachts Regatta 2024

Spirit Yachts has announced entry is open for its upcoming regatta, to be held in partnership with Locate Guernsey

Taking place in Guernsey in the Channel Islands, from 15 th  – 22 nd  June, the event is exclusively for Spirit Yachts’ owners, crew, and guests.

This year’s Spirit Yachts regatta builds on the successful platform of the inaugural regatta in Guernsey in 2022. Hosted in partnership with Locate Guernsey and based at Guernsey Yacht Club in St Peter Port, the regatta comprises a six-race series alongside a programme of varied social events.

Spirit Yachts Managing Director Karen Underwood commented, “Our bi-annual regatta is a unique opportunity to bring together the Spirit community for a week of unforgettable sailing and socialising. Guernsey offers some of the best sailing grounds in Northern Europe with good breeze, challenging tidal conditions, interesting courses, all against a backdrop of picturesque coastline and the surrounding islands.”

Jo Stoddart, Director at Locate Guernsey, added, “We are delighted to welcome the Spirit fleet back to Guernsey for their second owners’ regatta. The yachts create a fantastic spectacle on the water and a real buzz on the island. It will be a pleasure to showcase everything Guernsey has to offer."

The regatta programme has been designed to deliver fast paced racing under IRC rating for Spirit yachts from 37ft to 100ft+. The event is partnered by Locate Guernsey, with additional sponsorship from trusted suppliers WEST SYSTEM, Lewmar, OneSails, Pantaenius, and Oceanskies.

Spirit Yachts opens the entry for its inaugural regatta

Leading modern classic yacht design and build company Spirit Yachts has revealed the details of its first ever regatta.

Taking place from 25 th June to 2 nd July in Guernsey, the event will see a fleet of Spirit yachts take on a six-race series.

Hosted by Spirit Yachts in partnership with Locate Guernsey, the Spirit 2022 Regatta is now open for entries.

Sean McMillan, Spirit Yachts CEO commented, “The idea for the Spirit Regatta was driven by our owners expressing interest in the opportunity to race and socialise exclusively with other Spirits.  There is a fantastic community spirit and friendship amongst the Spirit owners and crews, so whilst the racing will no doubt be competitive, the socialising will also be a lot of fun.”

Based in Guernsey’s capital St Peter Port, the regatta will comprise a six-race series of passage, round the cans, and windward/leeward courses organised by the Guernsey Yacht Club (GYC).

Commodore of the GYC, Anna Rivers, said, “We are thrilled to be welcoming Spirit Yachts and its fleet of stunning modern classic yachts to Guernsey.  Our famously tidal waters and navigational challenges will make for a competitive series and a spectacle on the water.”

Once ashore, regatta competitors and guests will be treated to a varied programme of social events in iconic locations.  From welcome drinks at the 800-year-old Castle Cornet to sunset BBQs, and a glamorous prize-giving dinner, there will be plenty of opportunities for socialising.  The regatta will also raise funds for the Guernsey Sailing Trust.

For its inaugural regatta, Spirit Yachts has partnered with Locate Guernsey, a Guernsey government agency established to promote the benefits of Guernsey to potential relocators.

Director of Locate Guernsey, Jo Stoddart, commented, “With its beautiful beaches, bustling marinas and thriving community, Guernsey is a wonderful location for yacht racing and cruising.  The Spirit 2022 Regatta provides a fantastic opportunity to showcase everything Guernsey has to offer to those who enjoy life by the water.”

The St. Barts Bucket Race

One of the most popular and prestigious invitational sailing yacht races is St. Barts Bucket race in the Caribbean , generally held in March. During this event, you will see a variety of beautiful sailboat brands, luxury yachts and superyachts – all in one place, which makes quite a spectacle. Perini Navi, Pendennis, Fitzroy, Dubois, Alloy Yachts, Holland Jachtbouw, Baltic, Palmer Johnson, Farr, Vitters, J Boat, Royal Denship, Royal Huisman – you name it, classic and contemporary, all the yacht designs and builds can be seen at the race. The invitational regatta is held along the island of St. Barthelemy or St. Barth in French or St. Barts in English for short.

St. Barts Bucket Race is an invitational regatta and is especially known for the spirit and demeanor the racers almost automatically take on during the race: they race merely for the love of sailing yachts. The race usually limits its participants to a maximum of 30 yachts and each one must have a length over all (LOA) of a hundred or more feet. But being a bucket regatta, whose foremost concern is fun, authorities usually forego the fastidiousness of formal LOA measurements and often make allowances for the inputs in the Velocity Prediction Program (VPP) of participants. This is a truly fun and carefree yacht race where yacht owners and crews can experiment on the capabilities of their yacht without worries. For this event, you can charter yachts or bring your own. The entire event is chiefly 3 full days of sailing where the starting point is usually held at Port Gustavia, which at the time of the event will be exclusively reserved for the yachts to dock on.

Interesting Rules: • Essentially, this regatta is a pursuit race so some slower yachts may start first. Of course, the first yacht to cross the finish line is the winner. • In starting, all yachts will have to rely on sail power only (except when power is needed to steer clear of other yachts). • If any yachts start ahead of time, 5 minutes will simply be added to their elapsed time because recalls are not allowed. • Those who maneuver and handle their yachts out of the congenial spirit, meaning they are being too competitive and aggressive, will be excluded from the race. • Teams and crews can make protests especially as long as it will come with champagne! This year’s bucket race ended with three yachts finishing almost at the same time. Just like in the race conclusions of the past three years, it ended with party, party, party while giving charity concert and a large donation to the island’s hospital.

Join the Great Bay Yacht Club for the 3rd annual Ned McIntosh Small Boat Regatta on Saturday, June 22. Merry Macs, Oyster River Cats, Handy Cats, Nutshell Prams, small sailing boats, and dinghies are all welcome.

The race is open to entrants of all ages. Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. at Hilton Park. 

It was in the spring of 1954, when a group of sailors gathered with a simple purpose, “to organize and provide rules for racing this summer on Great Bay, or other places designated.” By 1958, Great Bay Yacht Club was officially registered with the State of New Hampshire as a non-profit organization whose purpose was “to foster the spirit of sailing in the community around the Great Bay area."
