Crocker Keelboat -  Wakarere

Wakarere holds a significant place in the history of the Wellington area. Commissioned by The Elliot's in 1939 and built by Jack Morgan in Picton, she carries a rich legacy. Correspondence between Sir Randle Elliot and Jack Morgan during the construction process adds to her historical value. Wakarere was the first yacht in the Wellington area to feature winches and a toilet. The introduction of these amenities was such a milestone that a "Toilet party" was held to celebrate. Sailing out of the RPNYC, she raced in all the inshore offshore races even participating in the ill-fated Wellington to Littleton race in 1951. Despite encountering difficulties, she persevered and made a memorable journey. Her resilience during this race caught the attention of documentary filmmakers, leading to her appearance in "Descent from Disaster," with Peter Montgomery filming her on the water.

She boasts a carvel plank design, crafted from Kauri with copper bolts, rivets, roves, black beech ribs, and Jara for floors, mast beams, and deadwood. She was built to stand the test of time.

Cheap (?) yachts on Trademe

By Pugwash , February 5, 2014 in MarineTalk

I am always looking on Trademe at yachts for sale. There seems to be quite a few that look good value, cheap even, and I wonder what may be wrong with them. One that caught my eye recently was a Chico 30 for $25k and there are many others. Some have been for sale for ages. Is there a glut and that is why these boats are not selling and some prices are lower?

I have a hankering for a keeler to go a bit further afield than I can in my trailer yacht, but I am a bit bewildered by all the different yachts for sale. What is good value and what is a whole lotta trouble?

Hi Pugwash a good start is to know what you want to do ie race/cruise, how fast, how far ie inner gulf, coastal, offshore and with how many adults, children for how long. You can do a search to find past discussion on this topic. Others will correct me but the big $ are in engine, teak deck or rig replacement. Ask on here for advice. When you find the boat you think you want get a survey done and do a seatrial - you will find info on surveyors here. This will help you avoid expensive surprises. Happy boat hunting

The cheap yachts on trade me are cheap and still for sale for a couple of good reasons...

A,. They require a lot of work to get them to a level that would make them a good reliable and safe vessel.

B. The cost of doing so makes it very risky of actually making the vessel worth the expenditure.

In my mind you are better costing the boat plus any work you want to do then comparing this total cost against a better boat of this value.

Take the $25 k Chico. By the time you have upgraded her you may be able to but a $70k boat. But you still have an old Chico with low value and thus will sell at a low price later on.

The best bang for Buck at the moment is buying out of America or the Med ( Greece/turkey...) and sailing it back. But you will buy few boats in $80k

NZ's market is full of a lot of rubbish at the moment.

These are a few I've been looking at, as well as the Chico. I understand what you're saying and agree with the statement about a lot of rubbish.

Is there anywhere in particular to look in America or Europe, ie sites like Trademe? This is something I've thought of doing.

Yacht World is a great time waster

Here is a 2008 Hanse 370 with a raft that has been listed for two years at least.

Perhaps $100,000 as an offer?

What would that buy you in NZ?

When buying in Greece be sure of the owner details as well as the usual stuff like taxes etc...

The market is at its bottom and there are some good condition boats. The ones owned by the non Greeks are the best and the ones out in the islands are the best as they spend all winter on the hard (shortage of moorings)and most only do two to three weeks cruising a year.

They are also the hardest to sell as the islands are forgotten about and most people have no idea how easy it is to getting out to the islands. Yet the ferries (Hellenic...) are regular and well priced.

Slight problem, Greece is a long way from New Zealand and shipping a yacht is very expensive. Turning a production cruiser into a bluewater boat capable of sailing back to NZ isn't cheap either. When you get back your up for some duty and GST. Sure you would still come out looking good, the europeans consider brands like beneteau, bavaria etc to be cheap charter yachts, they are also cheap to buy new over there. Kiwis seem to have a slightly higher opinion of them. if you look at quality brands in the med like Hallbery Rassy, Moody etc they aren't that cheap.

This Chico is a wee way from home but well fitted out. http://www.yachtworld.com/boats/1986/Ch ... i/Malaysia

There is an intrinsic and quality value in a lot of the old boats though and thats something worth considering or at least weighting. You might be happy to deal with some of the extra maintenance in order to have that row away factor. I'm like that, I get a lot of satisfaction out of owning a 1975 one off cold moulded kauri boat, built to world standard or better by kiwi boatbuilders.

Incidentally , Sheryl, which is #2 on your trade me list, was extensively rebuilt and refitted by a CREW member to a very high standard only what? 3 years or so ago ( 5 max) She went back in like a new boat. And actually that # 3 on your list looks very interesting as well, but a totally different animal as far as the way you would or could use it.

Sheryl gets you into all the classic events and a couple of specialist clubs( CYA, Woolacott assn). and a great small gulf and coastal cruiser, whereas the #3 boat has an equipment list which could point you offshore.

Steve Pope 251

I was given an estimate to ship a boat to Europe from NZ $40.000, to ship from Europe to NZ it was $20.000, why the difference I have no idea but if you don't want to spend a couple of years sailing it back the Eu to NZ price isn't too bad.

Thanks for all the replies.

The Chico in Langkawi does look good value. If I bought offshore, I would be sailing it back, eventually, the long way round. That's the plan anyway.

The Nimbus, 3rd on my list, worries me slightly as it's only a foot, 30cm in new money, longer than my trailer yacht, but it sounds like it's been built pretty tough.

I do like the classic yachts and Sheryl is a wee beauty. As you say, owning a distinctive one-off or rare yacht would be great.

Europe to NZ is only a years sailing time. As long as you get to the Canaries by October it is all a standard run home.

The boat has to be exceptional value to be worth shipping as you pay duty (if applicable) and GST (if not NZ built) on both the purchase price and the shipping.

If you sail it you pay duty and GST only on what you paid for it LESS 10% a year for depreciation.

Pretty good wages for a years holiday

That is cheap. It costs $30,000 US to ship a 38fter from Phuket to Turkey
