Bayliner Founder Sells Westport Yachts to Chouest Family

Westport Shipyard, the largest yacht builder in North America, announced in an emailed statement they have been acquired by Westport, LLC, an ownership group that includes Gary Chouest and members of his Louisiana-based family.

The company’s management team led by Daryl Wakefield along with the 400 employees of Westport will remain in place however, with no expected changes according to the statement.

Since 1997, Westport’s majority shareholder has been Mr. John Orin Edson, the billionaire founder of Bayliner Marine.

“Similar to the history of the Chouest family business, Westport began five decades ago with a fishing fleet, and has diversified into many other core businesses, focusing on customer satisfaction and the pursuit of excellence,” said Gary Chouest.

Westport has facilities three locations in Washington state, as well as a marina and sales office in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. The company has built more than 120 yachts since 2000, including one for Gary Chouest.

“Gary has always been passionate about our industry, and we are honored to count him as a customer, and now our majority owner, as well,” commented Westport president, Daryl Wakefield.

Westport is not the Chouest family’s first venture in the yacht-building business; they also own American Custom Yachts of Stuart, Florida.

Westport 164: Boardwalk

Westport 164

There are repeat yacht buyers, and then there’s Tilman Fertitta. Fertitta is chairman, president and CEO of Landry’s Restaurants, one of the largest privately owned restaurant, entertainment and gaming firms in the United States. Given that his company owns eateries ranging from the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co. to the Chart House, as well as operating the Golden Nugget casinos, Fertitta knows a thing or two about hospitality. And in his role as a father of four, he understands how to keep kids entertained.

No wonder, then, that his 164-foot Westport Boardwalk reflects a mix of spaces meant for grown-up fun and family-friendly gatherings. Fertitta made Boardwalk fully his own, and different from the six deliveries in the Westport 164 series that came before her. He took full advantage of the customization that the Pacific Northwest builder offers, a level that other series builders rarely permit.

Prior to commissioning his 164, Fertitta owned a Westport 112 and then a 130, both christened Boardwalk . While each of the three models differs from the others they share some similarities. You’ll spy the first upon stepping inside from the main afterdeck doors. Directly to port, there’s a stone-top wet bar with leather-clad bar chairs. The setup worked well aboard the smaller Westports, without impinging on the rest of the salon’s space, so why not incorporate it aboard the 164, especially given the extra floor space afforded by the length overall and nearly 31-foot beam?

The other major similarity is also on the main deck. Boardwalk ‘s galley has a dining spot much like a country kitchen does. Fertitta’s 112- and 130-footers featured Westport’s standard country kitchen arrangement, and he preferred this to the stainless-steel commercial look that Westport offers as the standard galley design on the 164. Whether cruising stateside or in the Med, as Boardwalk did this summer, Fertitta wanted an open, warmer ambience where he and his family could feel welcome while the chef and stews were at work. As a result, the galley is rich with stone-top counters and wood-clad cabinetry. The welcoming feel is aided by bar stools that pull up to the island cooking area, ideal for observing the pros at work or for sneaking samples out of the pots when the chef isn’t looking.

Boardwalk incorporates a handful of other customized touches as well. There are loose furnishings on the afterdeck, easily moved when entertaining large groups or rearranged into intimate relaxation areas on private trips.

Normally an elevator rises through the trideck 164, but Fertitta specified a stairway instead, something that a few other 164 owners also chose.

Aboard Boardwalk , the stairway treads are floating affairs, with a sturdy yet elegantly curving stainless-steel handrail outboard, along the mahogany-lined walls.

To lessen the formality of the dining area, Fertitta requested a smooth flow-through from the salon, skipping the customary central buffet that acts as a room divider. The arrangement still avoids the “bowling alley” look, and it’s simultaneously family-friendly and suitable for big gatherings.

In the master, rather than have the standard separated his and her heads, Fertitta wanted one full-beam bath. In another change, the vista bar, a standard wet bar tucked forward to port off the skylounge, is more like an intimate wine-tasting area, since Fertitta has it equipped with glass-front bottle stowage. Plenty of extra televisions are aboard as well, from the main afterdeck bar to the full-beam master bath (the TV is camouflaged as artwork when off) to the galley’s dining spot. And to help set various moods day or night, plus highlight the colorful, specially commissioned artwork throughout Boardwalk , a great deal of attention was paid to lighting.

Of course, some areas aboard Boardwalk follow the standard Westport 164 layout, which has both typical and atypical features. A good example of the latter is the upper-deck VIP stateroom, which benefits from a private sun deck. There are four more guest staterooms, all on the lower deck. Fertitta can stay in touch with his various businesses while in the office within the main-deck master suite. The room doubles as a lounge, with comfortable seating opposite the desk. Doors connecting it to the owner’s foyer just aft and the sleeping area just forward can close for more privacy. And guests can watch the captain at work from a raised observation settee in the pilothouse.

The crew also benefit from keeping some things the same aboard Boardwalk . The crew’s quarters (accommodations for 10 in five cabins, in addition to the captain’s stateroom) have service access to the guest staterooms via a dedicated housekeeping area. An automatic door leads from the galley to the formal dining area, and a dumbwaiter makes serving hors d’oeuvres or full meals easier while dining abaft the skylounge. Also, when Fertitta, his family or guests want to explore an anchorage, the crew can retrieve fishing rods and dive gear and launch the tender from the garage.

The toys were put to good use this summer while Boardwalk was exploring the Mediterranean. She also put her own propulsion package to the test: twin MTU 16V 4000s, which permit a reported 20-knot cruising speed and 24-knot top end (each at half load). Range at cruising speed is reported to be 1,700 miles, though it naturally increases to 5,200 miles when speed is reduced to 12 knots.

As a repeat yacht owner, Fertitta knows what works well. Being a repeat Westport client, he also knows that a turnkey construction approach can still successfully offer tailor-made options. When a buyer and builder understand each other as well as these two do, the end result is a yacht as custom as you can get without compromising production principles.

Inside the Westport Owners' Weekend in Maine

Westport Yachts hosted a fun-filled weekend in Boothbay Harbor, Maine July 26 to 29. Ten yachts, their owners and guests, were rewarded with sun, warmth and a schedule of fun activities.

A few penalties for speeding were issued after a spirited kayak race through Boothbay Harbor.

The location

A boat excursion to the Cuckolds Lighthouse is a must do in Boothbay Harbor. Decommissioned a few years ago, the lighthouse was turned into an inn with rugged charm.

Her interior is styled by American designer design house Westport Yachts and she was delivered to her owner in October 2015. This luxury vessel's exterior design is the work of Gregory Marshall.

Top Dog has been designed to comfortably accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 suites. She is also capable of carrying up to 7 crew onboard to ensure a relaxed luxury yacht experience.

Built with a GRP hull and GRP superstructure, with teak decks, she benefits from a semi-displacement hull to provide exceptional seakeeping and impressive speeds. Powered by twin diesel MTU (12V 4000 M90) 12-cylinder 2,735hp engines running at 2050rpm, she comfortably cruises at 20 knots, reaches a maximum speed of 24 knots with a range of up to 2,500 nautical miles from her 9,530 gallon fuel tanks at 10 knots. Her water tanks store around 1,780 Gallons of fresh water. She was built to ABS (American Bureau of Shipping) ✠A1, Commercial Yachting Service, ✠AMS classification society rules, and is MCA Compliant.

The History of the Westport Shipyard:

Flames ravage Lake Mead marina, dozens of boats destroyed in fiery tragedy

Las Vegas (KSNV) — The National Park Service is taking the lead on the investigation after dozens of boas were recently totaled or damaged at Lake Mead.

On Thursday, insurance adjusters reached the dock to help boat owners figure out what's next .

"Lake Mead is heaven, it's just a way to get away."

This is how Mary Alice Rasmuson pictured her summer on Lake Mead, with friends and family out on their boat 'Waviation.'

Their first big outing of the season was set for Sunday but instead, tragedy happened.

A fire swept through the dock , with more than two dozen boats damaged or destroyed, including Rasmuson's, who was sent pictures from the scene.

"Our boat was in I-37 so were on I dock and we basically had a front-row seat to what seems to be the fireworks show. So the front end of our boat is melted and burned," Rasmuson says.

According to investigators, the fire started on one houseboat, with the flames then spreading to others.

Boulder City Assistant Fire Chief Joshua Barrone says the location of the fire, a marina on the lake, was an unusual challenge.

"Most people think there's water in the lake it should be pretty easy, it's really not," Barrone says.

"Those kinds of fires aren't the bread and butter of southern Nevada fire departments, suctioning or having hard suction on the fire engines isn't something that occurs. So we have to go find the closest fire hydrants which happened to be two and a half miles away which requires a huge operation just in itself to get there."

Another issue was the amount of fuel onboard each vessel.

He says that just as one hot spot was extinguished, it would quickly reignite.

As for Rasmuson, she says the full scope of the damage to her boat won't be fully understood until it's brought out of the water.

One thing is certain, her family's summer fun is merely delayed, not canceled.

"We will definitely be back whether it be in this boat or another we will always be at Lake Mead."

Deemed an “offshore battlewagon” and “sportfisher on steroids,” by Vripack, the 171-footer features six decks, a distinctive long bow, a graceful sheer, and high bulwarks. It also showcases a signature tuna tower that doubles as a prime fishing spot and a viewing platform for guests. The hull and superstructure were both made from Alustar aluminum to keep the yacht as lightweight yet strong as possible.

“This motor yacht project showcases our ability to create custom solutions that perfectly align with our client’s vision,” Royal Huisman CEO Jan Timmerman said in a statement .

Designed to meet the needs of a discerning, angling-loving owner, Special One showcases a low and uncluttered aft cockpit with a fighting chair, an open foredeck with oversized sun pads, and a scenic sky lounge. Vripack says the latter is like an extraordinary “theater” in which guests can watch big-game fish leap out of the water. There is an actual outdoor cinema on the foredeck, too. In addition, the vessel is equipped with live bait wells, rod holders, fish freezers, tuna tubes, and a bait-and-tackle room.

Once again penned by Vripack, the interior evokes a penthouse with contemporary decor and sweeping views. The exact layout is still a highly guarded secret, but there is obviously plenty of space for multiple cabins and living areas.

Billfish best be prepared for this predator.
