Australian supermaxi Andoo Comanche secured a fourth line honours victory in the gruelling Sydney-Hobart ocean race Wednesday, but fell short of setting a new course record.

The 100-foot yacht, skippered by John Winning Jnr, triumphed in a nail-biting finish in the early hours of Wednesday after leading the blue water classic for much of the race.

It completed a quartet of line honours wins for the boat in the prestigious event since 2015 under a third different owner.

Andoo Comanche crossed with a time of one day, 11 hours, 56 minutes and 48 seconds -- about 20 minutes in front of rival supermaxi Law Connect -- and just under three hours short of its own record.

The current race record of one day, nine hours, 15 minutes and 24 seconds was set by the same Comanche boat under a different skipper in 2017.

Winning Jnr was part of the team that won the event in 2016, but said it was something special to skipper his own crew.

“To do it in a campaign that I was part of putting together is really quite exceptional,” he told national broadcaster ABC.

Last year’s defending champion Black Jack crossed third, followed by Wild Oats, which fell behind after tearing one of its sails earlier in the race.

The 109-strong racing fleet set off from a sun-splashed Sydney Harbour on Monday afternoon, charting their way through the 628-nautical mile course (1163km) to Hobart.

Favourable weather early in the race raised the prospect of toppling that mark, but the strong winds faded as the boats barrelled towards the finish line in Hobart.

The Bass Strait, which separates Tasmania from the mainland, can unleash perilous conditions.

A deep depression proved catastrophic for the fleet in 1998, when six sailors were killed and 55 more were rescued after five boats sank.

Race officials on Tuesday evening said only three of the starting fleet had been forced to retire so far.

One of them, 40-foot yacht Yeah Baby, withdrew less than four hours into the race after reportedly colliding with a massive sunfish.

Dozens of smaller yachts were still in the water Wednesday morning, competing for the handicap prize, which compensates for boat size.

Comanche held a consistent lead of 20 nautical miles throughout the afternoon as it moved towards the Derwent with LawConnect telling the Nine papers they expect to arrive at Constitution Dock in Hobart at around 2am AEDT.

As darkness neared, Wild Oats XI fell back into fourth having suffered sail damage overnight while reigning line honours winner Black Jack was third, some five nautical miles behind LawConnect.

Comanche led the fleet into Bass Strait in the early morning, but slipping well behind LDV Comanche’s race record from 2017. Three of the four supermaxis (100-plus-footers) ran well east of the rhumbline to take advantage of marginally stronger winds, before turning back towards the coast of Tasmania around midday.

There were two retirements on the first day, with two-hander Avalanche the first to pull back to shore with a damaged bowsprit after a collision with Llama II just outside the Sydney Heads. Llama II escaped with only superficial damage.

Yeah Baby then retired in the evening after sustaining rudder damage near Wollongong due to a collision with a sunfish, but returned safely to Sydney.

Koa then became the third retirement after breaking her rudder, and is set to be towed to Eden on the NSW south coast, leaving 106 yachts still in the race. Enterprise Next Generation put in a request for redress after helping their stricken rival.

WILD OATS COPS DAMAGE OVERNIGHT

Hamilton Island Wild Oats came within 0.3 nautical miles of Black Jack around 2am overnight in the hunt for third position, before Black Jack surged in the early morning.

The pair traded positions throughout the day, with Wild Oats taking a line significantly closer to rhumbline.

It followed a wild start where both Comanche and Wild Oats were forced to take penalty turns following a series of near-misses in Sydney Harbour (more below).

Wild Oats - hunting a record tenth line honours win - then suffered damage to one of their two largest sails overnight.

Their veteran crewman Chris Links told NewsLocal a seam across one of their large downwind sails split, requiring running repairs on deck.

“It is not an easy job,’’ Links said.

“It has a cable in it and we had to do the repair on deck.

“It took around one and a half hours to repair.’’

WILD START CAUSES CHAOS

“Protest, get the flag up, that was f***ing bull***t,” someone yelled on Andoo Comanche in the first two minutes after being cut off by rival supermaxis LawConnect and Black Jack.

URM and LawConnect were also “inches” away from crashing into each other, according to URM skipper Ashley-Jones.

Less than a minute later, one of the crew was heard barking: “you’re asking for a clusterf***, we’re going to be in a collision,” and labelled one rival a “f***ing idiot”.

Comanche hit a turning mark as it exited the heads and was later spotted flying a protest flag of their own, after another boat protested them.

On Wild Oats, which took two penalty turns, skipper Mark Richards could be heard yelling “furl, furl, we are going to do a 720 (penalty turn)”.

Wild Oats famously lost the win in 2017 upon arrival in Hobart, after being handed a one-hour penalty for a rule breach over an incident with Comanche.

That race saw the record time set, with 2022’s Comanche roughly eight nautical miles behind the 2017 edition’s pace late on Monday night and falling further back overnight.

EARLY RACE UPDATES AND PREVIEW (via AFP)

More than 100 yachts set sail Monday on the Sydney-Hobart race as favourable winds raised hopes for a record time in one of the world’s most punishing ocean events.

Fans gathered at coastal vantage points and on spectator boats in a sun-splashed Sydney Harbour, which hours earlier had been shrouded in a thick fog that halted all ferry traffic.

The starting cannon fired to release 109 yachts on the 628-nautical mile (1,200-kilometre) blue water classic.

Crews dashed to get out of the city’s harbour on the first leg of the race down Australia’s eastern coast and across the treacherous Bass Strait towards the finish line in the Tasmanian state capital.

A final weather briefing on race day predicted “fresh to strong” north to northeasterly winds in the next day or so, giving the fastest, 100-foot supermaxi yachts a chance to challenge Comanche’s 2017 record of one day, 9 hours, 15min and 24sec.

Mark Richards, skipper of nine-time line honours-winning supermaxi Wild Oats, said his crew was buoyant after preparing for exactly these conditions.

“We put all our eggs in one basket and we put all our money on black for a downwind forecast and we have ended up getting it,” he told public broadcaster ABC.

“I think Wild Oats is going to be very fast,” Richards added. “The world is going to find out who is the fastest boat downwind.”

Wild Oats is competing for line honours against three rival supermaxis: Andoo Comanche, last year’s line honours winner Black Jack, and LawConnect.

Weather is a critical factor in the race, which was first held in 1945. Though the supermaxis are expected to be powered by northerly winds to a quick finish as early as Tuesday, slower mid- to small-sized boats will still be in the water in the following days facing possible gales and changes in wind direction.

In 1998, when a deep depression exploded over the fleet in the Bass Strait, six men died, five boats sank and 55 sailors were rescued.

Black Jack took line honours last year after a tight tussle with LawConnect, ending years of frustrating near misses to cross the finish line on the River Derwent after two days, 12 hours, 37min and 17sec.

Ichi Ban, which is not racing this year, was the 2021 winner of the overall handicap prize, which takes into account the yachts’ sizes. The boat pipped rival Celestial in a race where dangerous waves and weather conditions saw many withdraw.

International boats are making a return after the race was cancelled in 2020 for the first time due to the pandemic, and Covid hit the fleet last year.

Entrants come from Germany (Orione), Hong Kong (Antipodes), Hungary (Cassiopeia 68), New Caledonia (Eye Candy and Poulpito), New Zealand (Caro), Britain (Sunrise) and the United States (Warrior Won).

Sunrise is a proven ocean racer, winning the 2021 Fastnet Race in Britain, while Caro has been tipped to take out overall handicap honours, although skipper Max Klink played down his prospects ahead of the race saying: “I do not think we are the favourite.”

Sydney to Hobart yacht race sees first electric yacht J-Bird enter, taking on Wild Oats and Black Jack

Crusader co-founders and J-Bird co-skippers Annika and Ian Thomson, behind the wheel of their renewable vessel.

An electric yacht will race in this year's Sydney to Hobart for the first time — making history as cannons fire at the starting line.

Non-profit conservation group Ocean Crusaders will launch 'J-Bird' in the 77th edition of the world-famous race.

Massive diesel engines power household names like Wild Oats and Black Jack, but Ocean Crusaders co-founder, and J-Bird co-skipper, Ian Thomson, wants to show that isn't necessary.

"We just want to prove that we don't need fossil fuels to go sailing," he said.

"There is a cleaner way to go out there and enjoy our waterways and especially in a race when all you're using your diesel engine for is charging batteries.

"We don't need that, we've got solar panels, wind generators, hydro generators, we can use the elements to recharge our power so that we can actually communicate and do all the safety stuff."

J-Bird is powered by six 22-kilogram batteries, situated at the centre of the vessel, making it the heaviest part of the yacht outside of the keel.

The six 22-kilogram electric batteries responsible for powering J-Bird in the Sydney to Hobart Race.

J-Bird is no stranger to the Sydney to Hobart race.

It has competed twice before, using a diesel engine, but failed to finish both times.

Ocean Crusaders co-founder, and J-Bird co-skipper, Annika Thomson said just entering the race this year was an achievement.

"It is a big deal and we are nervous, very nervous," Ms Thomson said.

"We are on board a yacht that we spent three years building ourselves.

"Just getting to the start line is a win for us, we are very, very excited."

Top: J Bird is blue and white. Bottom: J Bird is almost all white

A touch of Hollywood on board

J-Bird was destined for landfill, rotting on a mooring in Pittwater when the Thomson's bought it in February 2020.

New additions include a convection oven, fridge and a new deck with a new core made from recycled PET bottles and bio-resins.

It also has a couch, made by the designer team who worked on Baz Luhrmann's epic Elvis biopic.

J-Bird's grey couch

There's one thing the Thomsons haven't changed though — and that's the name on the boat.

"There's a bit of a superstition that you should never change a boat's name unless you change it properly," Mr Thomson said.

"This boat has always had its original name J-Bird written on it and the superstition is you're meant to remove all of the names."

In the 2012 Sydney to Hobart, Mr Thomson said the vessel competed (with a diesel engine) as "Free Fire 52" with Sam Chan from Hong Kong and it didn't finish the race.

The year after, it competed as "Dodo", but also didn't finish.

"So, let's hope it's the third time lucky," Mr Thomson said.

As for whether J-Bird will be competing with the likes of Comanche and Wild Oats, he remains humble.

"I'm sure those guys will be sailing over the horizon on us," he said.

"At the end of the day, to be on the same straight line as these guys, I mean they're multi-million-dollar campaigns and ours is certainly not that, running a charity.

"We don't have bucket loads of cash. If anyone wants to jump on board as a sponsor, we'd certainly talk to you."

J-Bird moored on a dock at sunset.

Mammoth effort clearing tonnes of trash

J-Bird has been the Thomson's passion project in between charity work.

They've been cleaning rubbish from waterways for over 12 years and believe there will be a lot more work to do in the face of another big wet season.

"[It] is going to create a lot more rubbish and debris in the waterways," he said.

In the past few years, they've removed 595 tonnes of rubbish from waterways, from Tasmania to the Whitsundays.

This year alone, they did 272 tonnes in the aftermath of the Queensland floods.

Ocean Crusader co-founders and J-Bird co-skippers Annika and Ian Thomson, standing alongside their renewable vessel.

Ms Thomson said the pair were sailing on the back of that work and like-minded individual's support.

"We pick up trash in our water and we have made that our life because our life is on the water," Ms Thomson said.

"We work on it. We play on it.

"We have had an amazing community of volunteers supporting us all around and I want to thank all of them because, without our volunteers, we would not stand here today."

The annual Sydney to Hobart race starts on Boxing Day and runs through to New Year's Eve.

Black Jack and Hamilton Island Wild Oats pleased with progress after “tricky” Noakes Sydney Gold Coast

Skipper Mark Bradford believes Black Jack’s second place finish over the line in the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race is another sign the crew knows how to “get the best out of the boat”.

Peter Harburg’s Reichel/Pugh 100 finished just over 1 hour 15 minutes behind Line Honours winner Andoo Comanche.

Black Jack led out of Sydney Heads and stayed at the front of the fleet for much of the race until Andoo Comanche went further out to sea and picked up speed on Sunday afternoon/evening.

"The first part really suited us and Hamilton Island Wild Oats ," Bradford said of the light breeze at the start of the 384 nautical mile race.

"When the wind comes up, Andoo Comanche gets going. It appears they can roll at about nine knots. They can get on their way and at that point you can’t really hold them back.

"The plan is just to try to get as far ahead as you can and hope you can jag a little puff here and there.

"For the most part, it went well for us, but they got going in the end and full credit to them."

But Bradford was pleased with Black Jack’s performance as the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Line Honours winner continues her good form.

"We've now got this boat on rails," he said. "We know what to do in every condition, what sail pack to go with.

"There are a whole lot of scenarios with sails you can use and balance.

"It’s taken us quite a few years to get here. That sensation of when the boat is really rocking is fantastic."

The Oatley Family’s Reichel/Pugh 100 Hamilton Island Wild Oats, formerly named Wild Oats XI, returned to the Australian race track for the first time since 2019.

She finished third over the line, just over an hour behind Black Jack.

Skipper Mark Richards reflected: "It was a really tricky race, a lot harder than people think. It was very tactical, a lot of sail changes. It was cold, it was rough.

"A lot of the time we had 15-20 knots of breeze on the nose and very confused seas, so it was a lot more challenging than we all expected at the start

"We haven’t sailed the boat for three years. Black Jack have been out there doing a lot of sailing and they really showed that in the race against us.

" Andoo Comanche was in amazing form. I think they went past us at Port Stephens upwind doing an extra three knots. It’s a pretty incredible machine which is fascinating to watch but not too good when you’re on another boat."

Hamilton Island Wild Oats holds the record for Line Honours wins in the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast (6) and Rolex Sydney Hobart (9).

Richards and co. will look to build more momentum ahead of their return to the Rolex Sydney Hobart.

"I’m just super happy we got here in one piece; we didn’t break any gear and the team did a great job," he said.

"We made the most of the situation, it just wasn’t good enough this time.

"The reality is these boats are hard to sail and when you haven’t sailed a lot, it comes home pretty quickly how challenging it can be.

"I was really proud of everyone. It was a good result and we’re happy to get back into the saddle."

Sean Langman’s Reichel/Pugh 69 Moneypenny was fourth across the line, finishing strongly to move into the overall lead on IRC.

The 52-footers, mostly due in later this evening, are Moneypenny’s main competition, with Gweilo, Zen, Ichi Ban, Celestial, Quest and Patrice all looking to challenge for the Peter Rysdyk Memorial Trophy.

Fleet locked in for 2022 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race

A fleet of 70 boats has been locked in for the 2022 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, which returns on Saturday 30 July.

Three 100-foot maxis will lead the charge for Line Honours.

John Winning Jr will skipper Andoo Comanche (formerly Comanche) as the three-time Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Line Honours winner returns to the Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s offshore racing program for the first time since 2019.

Peter Harburg’s Reichel/Pugh 100 Black Jack, the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart Line Honours winner skippered by Mark Bradford, will look to reclaim the Line Honours trophy she won in 2018.

And Hamilton Island Wild Oats (formerly Wild Oats XI) is back on the race track after a two-year absence, with Mark Richards to skipper the six-time Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Line Honours winner.

Matt Allen’s Botin 52 Ichi Ban, winner of a record-equalling third Tattersall Cup in the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart, is one of 10 52-foot boats in the fleet.

TP52s Celestial, Frantic, Gweilo, Highly Sprung (Mark Spring’s new boat preparing for her offshore debut), KOA, Patrice, Quest, Smuggler and Zen add to an exciting list of overall contenders.

There are 13 two-handed boats competing, including the inaugural Two-Handed Division winners from the 2021 Rolex Sydney Hobart – handicap winner Disko Trooper_Contender Sailcloth (Jules Hall/Jan Scholten) and Line Honours winner Sidewinder (Rob Gough/John Saul), as well as Avalanche, Crux, Joker on Tourer, KD4, Local Hero, Philosopher, Rum Rebellion, Rumchaser, Shearwater, Solutions and Transcendence Crento.

While the bulk of the fleet is based in NSW, there are 10 interstate boats entered, including four from Queensland (Black Jack, Mayfair, MGD Mad Jack and Stratacare Flyaway Paul), three from Victoria (Chutzpah, Joker on Tourer and White Noise), two from Tasmania (Huntress and Sidewinder) and one from Western Australia (Enterprise Next Generation).

The small but mighty Gun Runner, the Army Sailing Club’s Jarkan 925, is the smallest boat in the fleet.

Bruce Taylor’s Caprice 40, Chutzpah, is the most recent Overall winner competing, having taken out the 2018 race.

White Bay 6 Azzurro, Shane Kearns’ S&S 34, will have her eye on a third Overall win, following her triumphs in 2015 (as Quikpoint Azzurro) and 2017 (as Komatsu Azzurro).

Sean Langman, Managing Director of Race Sponsor Noakes Group, returns with his Reichel/Pugh 69 Moneypenny, which was second over the line as Naval Group in the 2019 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast.

Langman is a multiple-times winner of both Overall and Line Honours in this race, with Grundig Xena and Grundig.

11 boats are entered into the PHS handicap category, including the 2019 PHS winner Pekljus, David Suttie’s Radford 50.

Avalanche, Ciao Bella, Mako, MGD Mad Jack, Mondo, Penzance, Reve, Shearwater, She’s the Culprit and Wonderland are also vying for PHS honours.

CYCA Director David Griffith returns with his JV62 Whisper, which won IRC Division 0 in the 2019 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast and was fifth overall in last year’s Rolex Sydney Hobart.

The battle between the 60-70 footers is one to keep an eye on, with Moneypenny, Whisper and David Gotze’s Reichel/Pugh 63 No Limit separated by just 24 minutes over the line in the 2019 race.

The 2022 Noakes Sydney Gold Coast begins in Sydney Harbour at 1300hrs (AEST) on Saturday 30 July.

The start will be streamed live on the Noakes Sydney Gold Coast Facebook page and CYCA TV YouTube channel.

This is the first of six races in the 2022/23 Audi Centre Sydney Blue Water Pointscore, which culminates in the 2022 Rolex Sydney Hobart.

The Sydney Hobart Yacht Race Has a Boat-Size Absence

Wild Oats XI, a crowd favorite that is one of the most successful yachts in the event’s history, will not compete this year pending repairs and rethinking.

A white yacht racing on blue water has black sails and the name Wild Oats on it in red. A dolphin leaps out of its way.

By Kimball Livingston

When the hundred-foot Maxi yachts hit the starting line for the Rolex Sydney Hobart Yacht Race, one absence will loom as a powerful presence.

There will be no Wild Oats XI, and Wild Oats XI is more than a boat.

Speculation is inevitable when a crowd favorite is missing. The report from the boat’s skipper, Mark Richards, is straightforward, but it won’t put an end to wondering. Of the boat and its owners, Richards said: “We had a structural failure in the bow and are having that addressed. The Oatley family are re-evaluating how to progress forward in our sport and they have just decided to have a break this year while they work it out.”

That resonates because in this race, Wild Oats XI has taken line honors (first boat to cross the finish line) nine times, set records three times and, beyond that, won the hearts of Australians.

“Kids 6, 7, 8 years old know the name,” Richards said.

No one dares use the past tense in speaking of Wild Oats XI, but questions arise when a boat that is synonymous with the Sydney Hobart, and that has been rush-repaired in the past to make a race, is absent.

Last year, the boat finished fourth at the Sydney Hobart after a sail ripped underway. It was in August of this year during a race in Australia’s Whitsunday Islands that the hull failure occurred.

In 2005, Bob Oatley commissioned the build of Wild Oats XI and set the standard — the boat swept all honors in its first Sydney Hobart race, only two weeks after launch. The boat would win line honors seven more times before Oatley’s death in 2016. His son Sandy, also passionate about sailing, carried on.

“I’d love to get one more crack,” Richards said. “I guess we’ll know more next year.”

Steve Quigley got his first crack as a crewman in 2012 and felt “daunted” joining the famously accomplished crew. Then, “We were first over the finish line, we set another course record, and we won our division on handicap,” he said. “I should have retired from racing then and there, but it wasn’t until I went walking around Hobart in my team shirt, with strangers asking for autographs, that I understood that Wild Oats XI had become the people’s boat.”

What next? Richards said, “The boat is still very capable.”

Quigley, a naval architect, was part of a team responsible for a bold 2015 redesign that bought the boat some time. In Quigley’s recollection, “I was the one in the meeting who had to tell Bob, ‘You may have the fastest Maxi in the world, but if you want to keep it that way, let’s chop it in half,’” he said.

Then they chopped it twice.

To respect the 100-foot maximum limit for the Sydney Hobart race, length was removed from the stern and added in a new bow section that accommodated bigger sails. Wild Oats XI.2 proved effective across the wind range, and success continued as the boat won line honors again in 2018.

Imagining a 2024 race, Quigley said, “Given the right combination of wind strength and direction, we could find a window to win, but the newer boats have a wider window.”

Design DNA in 2023 is different from 2005. Boats are now wider, yielding stability to carry taller masts and more sail. The maximum width of Wild Oats XI, 17 feet, is 45 percent less than LawConnect, winner of the most recent lead-up regatta series and yet not the newest or widest.

Sandy Oatley did not respond to a request for comment. More than one member of his crew spoke of the team as a “family,” so any decision is charged with emotion: Do you throw money at an unlikely Wild Oats XI.3, or would it satisfy if the boat slipped into the role of sentimental favorite and long shot?

The citizens of Hobart cheer for all, but it doesn’t hurt to arrive on Wild Oats XI. Andrew Henderson, part of the crew since 2005 and a 25-race veteran, said: “Anyone who can get a boat to Hobart deserves respect. The town offers the warmest reception in Australia. All of us understand how special that is.”

This year, however, after many years racing, he said, “I’m spending Christmas with the kids.”

Take a look inside the waterfront Florida home of Food Network superstar Guy Fieri

wild oats yacht 2022

It's not Flavortown , but it might be an embassy.

If you've ever wanted to live in restaurateur, author and television personality Guy Fieri's house, he's selling one in Lake Worth, Florida. The waterfront home on a corner lot was recently reduced by $755,000 to a steal at just $7,995,000.

That's more than twice what the host of "Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives" paid for it ($3.9 million) in March 2021 . Fieri has added new air conditioners and upgraded the spa and pool with new tile, a pool heater and exterior speakers.

The spiky-haired, bleach-blonde celebrity chef and multiple food show host isn't leaving Palm Beach County, though.  In June 2023,  he bought a waterfront home  on Riviera Beach's Singer Island for $7.3 million.

What's Guy Fieri's Palm Beach house like?

According to Zillow , the two-story block and stucco house at 10 Bella Vista Ave., Lake Worth, is just under 6,000 square feet on a 0.29 acre lot with six beds and five full baths. It sits on a corner with 210 feet of direct waterfront intracoastal frontage. The Fieri home features an outdoor kitchen, an elevator, a pool with spa, a boat lift and a private dock that can accommodate a yacht.

Annual HOA fees are $3,000. Tampa-area Realtor Charlie Bodine of the Real Estate Firm of Florida is representing Fieri in the sale.

"It's a very unique little enclave on a wonderful stretch of water," Bodine said in an interview earlier this year. "It's very hard to find 210 linear feet of dock and seawall on a property."

The house was originally listed in September for $8.75 million, then reduced to $8.5 million in October and the current price of $7.99 million in March, according to multiple listing service records.

Who is Guy Fieri ?

Guy Ramsey Ferry, 56, may have been born in Columbus, Ohio but he grew up to be the self-proclaimed Mayor of Flavortown in his seemingly endless appearances on the Food Network.

Fieri, who later changed his name to the original family spelling, began selling pretzels from a cart when he was 10 years old until he could spend a year studying in France at 16. After earning a degree in hospitality management from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas he worked in multiple restaurants and opened his own with partner Steve Gruber in 1996. Fieri and Gruber had opened four restaurants — three Italian "Johnny Garlic's" eateries and "Tex Wasabi's" — when friends convinced Fieri to try out for the Food Network's reality show "The Next Food Network Star."

The chef who said he likes to  "live big, laugh hard, and cook wild" in his audition video, according to Biography.com , won in 2006 and did, in fact, become the network's next star, starring in six shows for the network, including " Diners, Drive-ins and Dives " and " Guy's Grocery Games " and multiple shows and TV appearances elsewhere.

Fieri has published several best-selling books, and he continues to open restaurants. "I have about 90 restaurants right now," Fieri  told  Variety  in 2022 . "Plus the shows, two boys, 500 goats, a bunch of cars, a bunch of projects, a bunch of hobbies."

How do you pronounce 'Fieri'?

Guy pronounces his family name the Italian way, "fee-ET-tee" or possibly "fee-ED-dee."

Does Guy Fieri like Florida?

“Even a cloudy day in Florida is an awesome day,” Fieri said at the opening of the Chicken Guy! location in Winter Park. “I will be in Florida way more than you know.”

Over the years Fieri has filmed at multiple Sunshine State restaurants for his shows. As of 2023, more than 80 Florida restaurants have been featured on  Fieri's "Diners, Drive-ins and Dives ."

Guy Fieri in Florida: Where to find 35+ restaurants seen on 'Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives'

Four of Fieri's 18 "Chicken Guy" chicken tender restaurant locations are in Florida: Disney Springs in Lake Buena Vista, Miami, Wesley Chapel and Winter Park. Fieri also runs Flavortown Kitchen,  a delivery-only restaurant that's available in Florida, and even on cruises you can find his food. Guy's Burger Joint  and  Guy's Pig & Anchor  are available on various Carnival Cruise liners, which sail out of Jacksonville, Miami, Port Canaveral and Tampa.

The rock-n-roll foodie regularly makes appearances around the state. According to past  TCPalm reports , the celebrity cook is a regular at the South Beach Wine and Food Festival, which takes place at the beginning every year.

In 2022, Fieri made a $20,000 donation from his Guy Fieri Foundation to Lake Worth Community High School’s culinary program.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Keywords: Tuva, Early Iron Age, early Scythian period, Aldy-Bel culture, barrow, burial in the coffin, mummy, full genome sequencing, aDNA

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery and Museum

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

wild oats yacht 2022

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.

wild oats yacht 2022

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

wild oats yacht 2022

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

wild oats yacht 2022

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

wild oats yacht 2022

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

wild oats yacht 2022

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

wild oats yacht 2022

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

Macky Weathers, 7, with a big northern pike from northern Wisconsin.

Provided by Mike Jacoby

Mike Jacoby emailed the photo at the top last week and this:

Hey Dale, . . . I took my nephew Macky Weathers (7yrs old) from Highland Park musky fishing up in the Eagle River/Three Lakes area over the weekend, and he landed a 36” Pike. We were trolling crankbaits and it hit right on a weed point. He did an amazing job battling and getting the fish to the boat for me to net! After releasing the pike and getting everything reset, we lost a nice musky that jumped a few times and threw the bait. It was an awesome fish! Thanks for the consideration Dale! I hope all is well with you! Mike

Jay Damm with a bluegill from Lemont Quarries.

Jay Damm emailed the photos above and below, and this:

Hi Dale,I managed to get out to the Lemont Quarries today, and was not disappointed. The bluegill fishing was fantastic, with the action being almost nonstop from the first cast. It was rather challenging to get around, as the algae bloom made it difficult to row my personal pontoon boat through, so I had to navigate breaks in the vegetation to get to my preferred panfish spot in the quarries, “Bluegill Bay”. I was not disappointed, for from the first cast many hand-sized fish were nailing my Rocket (slip) bobber rig baited with live red worms on the drop. I do love fighting bluegill on ultra-light tackle, it feels like pulling in a sheet of plywood sideways. I could see and hear large surface “plops” all around me, apparently fish taking advantage of the abundant insect offerings, namely (but not exclusively) cicadas. Call it a cicada frenzy, call it post spawn, but it was a stellar bluegill day like none other at the quarries. Too many gills to count, all released.Tight lines,Jay

Hey Dale, Here is a recap of this past weeks fishing. Area lakes-The frog rod got the call for the first time this season. I had a short window so it was early on and early off. Weed growth is heavy on flats with lily pads filling in nicely. It’s the perfect conditions for kermit to catch some bass. I went 2 for 4 on blowups. With this weeks temps of 90 plus through next weekend, this bite will only continue to get better. Bass will be looking for shade and an easy meal. FINS Braids infinity braid in 50lb test was the perfect line to get those bass out of heavy cover. . . . TTYL Ken “Husker” O’Malley Husker Outdoors Waterwerks fishing team

Rob Abouchar with a largemouth bass from Island Lake.

Rob Abouchar messaged the photo above and this:

Hi Dale I’m back from a whirlwind couple of days after heading to Merrill to cut the grass check the house and then on to Milwaukee for Zappa rehearsal. I had a little time to fish from shore in town where I launched for years with Bella. The weather was ominous and the river had the kind of swift current that makes for an almost non existent bite. Possibly from dams being open further down river. I reembarked on my quest to catch a musky on a senko. A kayak fly fisherman was at the launch and also was after musky. I dared not tell him of my follie. He pointed out an osprey nest on the baseball field lights. The rain storm was imminent as I headed back to the house. In island lake the bite for bass remained good as the hot sunny weather set in. Texas rigged neko worm and wacky rigged senko in baby bass and green pumpkin under dock a and in shade AR we s produced nice largies. Anglers Fly fishing for bluegill having success. On the music front I had a great time joining indika reggae band last Saturday on melodic and a little freestyle. Tonight I may bring the melodic to join Gizzae in Libertyville at independence Grove where we saw some huge bass hanging under the lakeside deck feeding on pan fish. It’s 3 weeks to go till the zappa shows. Midnight mile June 29 at Morgan’s in Libertyville. A and not last of all the conscious rockers at the Montrose beach dock this Saturday 7pm. Here we go! Tight lines and good health! Rob

Pete Lamar emailed:

Hi Dale, I’ve braved the heat a couple of times for some pretty average fishing. I wanted to try a cicada pattern before it becomes irrelevant in a couple of weeks and stuck with it to the point of stubbornness. I got into some big bluegills on a Kane County F. P. pond, but only a few. If I’d really wanted to match the hatch, a dragonfly pattern would’ve been much better. As for wildlife, the highlight was startling a mink near a footpath. He got back to the water in a hurry when he saw me. This is a forest preserve pond but there is a local homeowners association involved too. I bumped into a professional trapper earlier in the Spring the HOA had hired to remove excess muskrats. That probably accounts for the mink colonizing this place. In addition to the muskrats, the place is full of bullfrogs as well as rabbits in the native grasses nearby. It must seem like a Golden Corral to a mink. Pete

Provided by Eugene NeSmith

Eugene NeSmith had an early outing with his dad Gene that resulted in the Fish of the Week, but there was other fish than just walleye, as Eugene noted:

We caught a ton of fish and this 16in crappie he caught

Art Frisell at Triangle Sports and Marine in Antioch said catfish are excellent in 5-10 feet with crawlers, stinkbait or roaches; carp are good; walleye good around bridge areas or main lake points, leeches, large fatheads or crawlers with walleye rigs; crappie are fair toward evening on glow Custom jigs and small minnows; bluegill fair in 8-12, ice jigs waxies or spikes; seek white bass in 8-15 with Mepps spinners with a split shot.

DELAVAN LAKE, WISCONSIN

Arden Katz said bluegill were 13-15 feet deep on the drop-shotting jigabit jigs with maggots (some bonus walleye, too); but guys using trout worms did even better.

Capt. Dave Duwe emailed:

Delavan Lake 6/17/24 through 6/24/24 With the warm weather, I have been positioning myself on the deep weedlines in 20-25 ft of water. Due to the cold spring, the largemouth bass are a couple of weeks behind schedule, the bass are not very thick on the weedline yet. They are in the medium weeds between 8 and 10 ft of water. Northern pike fishing has been fantastic. If you can’t catch them now, you should quit fishing. The biggest pike are in 27 ft of water. The largest concentration of fish is between 18 and 22 ft of water. The best presentation has been lindy rigging suckers or using Thill slip bobbers about ½ way down the water column. Look for the fish by Browns Channel or by Willow Point. The key I have found is keeping your bait moving. I’ve been electric motor trolling almost exclusively. Largemouth bass have been a bit slow. I’ve been on the deep weedline. If you are targeting largemouth bass you need to be in and around the docks in 6-8 ft of water. You want to fish split shot rigged nightcrawlers or a black and blue All Terrain jig. The best location has been the North Shore from the Yacht Club down to Willow Point. The few weedline fish I’ve been catching have been over 5 lbs. I’ve been catching them by the Yacht Club or over by Browns Channel. In the next week or so, the bass will be schooled up and be very easy to catch. Bluegill fishing has also been fantastic. The fish are in 15-18 ft of water. Look for the fish just west of the Yacht Club or by Willow Point. I’ve been catching a lot of fish throughout the lake, location doesn’t seem to matter but the depth is crucial. Walleye Pike can be caught using two different methods. The first is trolling deep diving crank baits along the weedline in 18 ft of water. You want to use a crankbait in perch or crappie pattern. The second method is lindy rigging jumbo leeches right around the weedline also in 18 ft of water. Look for the fish by the Village Supper Club or by Browns Channel. The one key has been making sure you are fishing the windy side of the lake. Crappie fishing has been sporadic. They are suspended over deep water. The fish are concentrating on the pods of small bait fish. They can be caught on purple or chartreuse plastic with a 1/32 oz jig. Look for the fish just east of Willow Point or just west of the Yacht Club. Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. For guide parties, please call Dave Duwe at 262-728-8063.

Vince Oppedisano emailed this report from Len Cajic: :

Hey Dale, I wasn’t able to get out this week, but here’s a report and photo from Len Cajic: “The river is still at a high level. Tough to wade safely. The water is stained/dirty. The heat has made the fishing difficult. Finesse presentations have been key. Hairjig, ned rig, etc. Have been getting them on crankbaits also. Topwater works in the early morning or late evening. The smallmouth have been caught mostly in current seams, dam area, and close to shore in shade pockets / slack water.”

fotw06-19-24blackberries.jpg

Blackberries along the Fox River system.

Pete Lamar emailed the photo above and this on Thursday:

Hi Dale, I fished the Fox last night before the extreme heat builds and possible upcoming rain muddies it up. Water was high but clear and cool-prime conditions. I got a few smallmouths, but I must be getting jaded by recent success: I didn’t bother to photograph a 16 inch fish. I was more interested in the blackberries ripening. Also, a bald eagle flew right over me. He circled mid-river briefly, then swooped down and picked off a fish and continued on his way. The turkey monitoring you wrote about today is a pretty cool program. I got into it last year after our conversations with Mr. Garver. I see turkeys occasionally during my wanderings on the Fox watershed in Kendall and western Kane County. You have great taste in comedic movies. Pete

I like my tastes in comedic movies, too. I also need to get serious about doing the turkey monitoring in my ramblings.

Then on Tuesday, he updated:

Hi Dale, . . . The Fox has returned to normal Summer levels, much lower than it was for the past week. It’s also as clear as I’ve seen it during the Summer. It was a great backdrop, but all I got were some small smallmouths. Water temps are rising quickly in the extreme heat, so it may be time to focus on oxygenated water near dams and fast water, or go back to the spring-fed tributaries. Pete
The hot weather has helped the catfish bite on the Fox River cut bait, suckers and stink bait.

GENEVA LAKE, WISCONSIN

Arden Katz said largemouth are being caught in 8-12 feet with a dropshot; pumpkinseed in the same 8-12 feet, they’re using on the bass beds.

Lake Geneva Fishing Reports 6/17/24 through 6/24/24 Lake Trout are biting in the main lake basin. Most of the fish are suspended off the bottom between 50 and 90 ft down in 115-130 ft of water. Most of the fish are caught at first light or right at dusk. With the longer days, you need to get up very early to get the best bite. Fish can be caught on nickel/green or nickel/blue spoons fished on down riggers. I’ve been trolling the spoons at 2 to 2 ½ mph. Smallmouth bass have finished spawning and have moved out on the break lines. The best depth has been 12-18 ft of water. They can be caught on nightcrawlers fished on a split shot rig or drop shotting small finesse worms. My best success has come by Linn Pier or by Belvidere Park in Fontana. I’ve caught a lot of post spawn females in excess of 20 inches in the past few weeks. The smallmouth bass bite this spring has been one of the best in the past 3 years. Rock bass remain everywhere on the lake. Lake Geneva is an awesome place to take a first time angler for a lot of action. The highest concentration of fish is from 10-12 ft of water. The bigger fish seem to be on the break line in 12-18 ft of water. My best location has been by Linn Pier by what is known as the duck hole. The best bait has been a split shot rigged nightcrawler. If you don’t want to spend a lot of money on live bait, white hair jigs have also been producing a lot of fish. Largemouth bass have not moved to deep water yet. They are still in the weed flats. My best location has been by Trinkes or in Geneva Bay by the boat launch. The bass can be caught on split shot rigged nightcrawlers, wacky rigged Senkos or split shot rigged green pumpkin lizards. My biggest fish this past week was 4.3 lbs. caught in Trinkes bay. The next couple of weeks should be some of the best largemouth bass fishing shallow that Geneva has to offer. Bluegills and Pumpkin Seeds have been sporadic. The biggest fish I’ve caught has been in Trinkes Bay in 12-13 ft of water. I’ve been catching the fish by accident on split shot rigged nightcrawlers. If you wanted to key on them, I would use leaf worms fished on a slip bobber while anchored. Some of the pumpkin seeds this past week were over 10 inches. Perch still remain in the shallow waters. They are on the hard bottom near points. On Saturday last week, the average size was very good. There was one keeper per five small ones, which is pretty good for Lake Geneva. I’ve been catching them on nightcrawlers pieces fished on a Thill slip bobber or a split shot rig. Good luck and I hope to see you on the water. GREEN LAKE, WISCONSIN

Brennan Zimmy, 15, from Geneva caught his personal-best largemouth bass of 20 1/2 inches Friday on Fox Lake with guide Mike Norris.

Mike Norris

Guide Mike Norris emailed the photo above and this:

Big Green Lake: Water clarity is extremely clear for this time of the year. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are post-spawn and have moved to deeper water. Work quarter-ounce tube jigs and drop shot rigs in 10 to 15 feet of water. The better areas are where gravel extends from shallow water to deep water. Try trolling spinner rigs over the top of the deeper weeds for walleye. Troll crankbaits for white bass are suspended near the Heidel Bar. You can find rock bass everywhere. I’m catching them with a drop shot and a red worm around cribs in 17 feet of water. Fox Lake: A bloom has formed on the surface due to the warmer lake temperatures. This allows largemouth bass to stay shallow. The dam separating the Fox Lake from the Beaver Dam Lake is open and creates a flow that flushes bait through the system. This results in excellent fishing for largemouth bass. The rocky points from Brushwood, Elmwood, and Dead Island are key fishing areas for bass. My lure of choice is a wacky worm, and I am casting them to the edge of the rocky points which come off the islands. Crappies are good out on the basin for those drifting with a split shot and minnow. Walleyes remain active in 10 to 15 feet of water off Maple Point. Troll spinners with a piece of crawler or vertically jig with plastics to catch them.

Hey Dale, Here is a recap of this past weeks fishing. . . . Kankakee River-river is slightly up and stained but very wadable. Smallmouth are setting up into their summer pattern. Focus on current seams and moving water that has larger boulders. Lipless cranks have been the most consistent bait. Dave Strobel with a nice bass. . . . Dan Edwards at Bridgeport Bait and Tackle said beautiful smallmouth are being caught on Rooster Tails; some big catfish at night.

Stacey Greene at Park Bait at Montrose Harbor texted:

Hi, good morning. Perch opened Sunday, and as is with summer Perch catches, some guys had their limit, others had few or none. The ones that were caught are nice sizes. Hitting crayfish and minnows. The weekend was also hot at Diversey for Steelhead. We heard one guy had caught 4 as well as a few guys having 1’s. They were hitting shrimp and hair jigs with wax worms. Sheephead are hitting when winds are north. Our hours are now 4am to 8pm 7 days a week. Have an awesome week.

Dan Edwards at Bridgeport Bait and Tackle said a buddy caught eight keepers at Montrose on opening day and another customer four behind McCormick Place Tuesday morning. The shop is having a free big perch contest (by weight) with a $100 first place prize and other prizes.

Capt. Bob Poteshman of Confusion Charters said out of North Point, good big coho in 40-100 from the state line to the hotel at Illinois Beach State Park. Out of Chicago, all along the lakefront in 55-75 is loaded with coho; best are Dodgers and flies (Stubbys and Aqua flies are a favorite).

Rob Wendel , proprietor of Lake Michigan Angler in Winthrop Harbor, said fishing was good for coho the last several days in 60-110 with baby Spin Doctors or Stubby dodgers and flies; a few more kings on wire divers and Dragonslayer flashers with Bullfrog flies; a few steelhead on the coho rigs.

They were only fishing a couple hours, and his daughter, Becca, Netted the fish!!! It’s his personal best Wisconsin Muskie and a Father’s Day to remember forever!!

Kurt Justice at Kurt’s Island Sport Shop in Minocqua emailed:

Heading into the first day of summer and it continues to be a wet, windy season so far. Lots of fronts moving through keeping anglers off the water or making it tough to stay with the winds we keep getting. Those able to wet some lines doing well with good reports from gamefish anglers. Musky: Good-Very Good – Keep in mind the “bite” window for these long fish is sometimes short. Some very nice fish over the past week, topping 50” have been boated. Bucktails over deep weedlines along big drops. Double bladed to push water and rubber baits were key. Muggy, warm evenings have been hot for top-water action. Smaller bucktails such as #500, #700 Buchertails and Wizards doing best in mornings over shallower weeds producing mid-30” to low-40” fish. Largemouth Bass: Good-Very Good – No reports of bedding to our knowledge, yet good reports of nice LMB in 6-10’ weeds on Wacky Worms, jig/creature, pre-rigged worms and top-water baits (evenings). Casting big weed flats with chatterbaits and spinnerbaits also effective. Smallmouth Bass: Good-Very Good – First move off the beds has been out in 8-14’ weeds. Ned rigs and Wacky Worms best. As waters warm up, we should see more movement out to rock bars. Walleye: Good – Signs of Mayfly (hexagenia) hatches moving up the water columns over the weekend and now actual reports of hatches reaching the surface has slowed those waters. Yet on waters not ready, nice fish being caught using redtails or full crawlers along coontail edges of 14-16’ on larger lakes. Lots of reports of protected “slot” fish and those larger being caught and released. Northern Pike: Good – Best on 4-5” swimbaits over cabbage flats of 6-12’. Nice averages of 25-30” fish with two over 36” this past weekend. Bluegills: Good – Lots of reports of staging Gills, lots of heavy egg laden fish in 6-9’ outside shallow spawning areas. Most on worms with floats on tiny jigs. Wind making small/light presentations tough. Yellow Perch: Good-Fair – Wind biggest factor as fishing pockets in shallow flats tough. Beavertails, medium fatheads or leeches under weighted floats best. No concentrations, but some very respectable (9-11”) fish scattered about. Crappies: Fair – As with other panfish, tough to sit on productive spots and use viable presentations. Live Crappie minnows or small tubes under weighted floats in 8-14’ narrow leaf cabbage best. More weather expected through this weekend, coming in small waves. The following week looks to get very summer-like with highs in the upper 70s to mid-80’s should get the summer patterns locked in. Mosquitos have been heavy, especially on the calm, humid spells. Out away from shore, no skeeters – just some flies. Kurt Justice Kurt’s Island Sports Shop – Like us on FaceBook

Coho action still good most days fishing in 65 to 85ft of water from east Chicago to Michigan city. Stubby dodgers and flys best fishing 25 to 60 down. A good number of steelhead over the weekend fishing portage Riverwalk and Michigan city pier. Shrimp and crawlers did best but some caught on a variety of other baits Trail creek in Michigan city giving up steelhead using shrimp, spawn saks and some on spinners. Catfish of all sizes being caught at night fishing burns ditch and deep river using triple s stinkbait, skipjack and shad.

Ken Maggiore messaged:

Not sure if you have heard about the cohos this year on the lake but it’s shaping up to be like the run in 2019. I have a good feeling there may be a few records beat this year. The charter(Schools Out Sport Fishing out of Racine,Wi) I work for has been getting them in the 10lb plus range already. I wouldnt be shocked to see one go 25lbs this year.

As regular readers know, I live for stuff like that. Maybe this is the year we finally bust a coho record.

SOUTHWEST MICHIGAN
