The world's largest superyacht Azzam

10 facts about Lürssen's 180m superyacht Azzam

Related articles, superyacht directory.

Mario Pedol, founder of Nauta Design, gives Elaine Bunting the inside view on what it was like working on one of the world’s biggest private boats.

For six years from her launch in April 2013, the superyacht Azzam stood as the world’s largest private yacht. At 180m overall, Azzam was eclipsed only in 2019 when the research and expedition vessel REV Ocean was unveiled – and then by only three metres.

To Azzam’ s owner – and exterior designer Nauta Design – size was never the ultimate goal. Instead, the objective was to create a sleek vessel with elegant, timeless lines. Originally, the superyacht was designed to be 145 metres, but in the process of optimisation it grew, and to this day, Mario Pedol, founder of Nauta Design, takes it as a great compliment when admirers say the yacht looks smaller than her size.

Nauta, famed as the studio behind some of the most graceful sailing yachts afloat, was asked to create an exterior design for Azzam . “There was already a GA [general arrangement plan of the interior layout] but they were missing the exterior design, and that was quite something,” says Pedol.

Previously, Nauta’s largest project had been 80 metre Project Light , a modern yet graceful motor yacht that drew on sailing yacht aesthetics and blended the boundaries between outdoor and indoor living. Azzam was to be different in style and intent, but Nauta was brought in to shape how the vessel would look.

“It was a challenging brief,” says Pedol. “The ship – and actually it is a ship – was due to reach 30+ knots. So one of the fundamental characteristics was the speed, quite unusual for this size, and I wanted to give a sense of that speed even in the design. Fortunately enough, the requirement of interior volume was not excessive for the length, so it did allow us to design a balanced and elegant yacht with good proportions. I’ve had many comments that, from some distance, you can’t tell she is a 180 metre yacht.”

The yacht accommodates a large, open plan main saloon, accommodation for 36 guests and up to 80 crew, complex ‘dual mode’ engine systems and the fuel required, despite having a comparatively shallow draught of just 4.3 metres.

The challenging design and engineering accounted for around a third of the four-year construction schedule, while arriving at the long, lean shape was in itself a challenge, needing detailed Finite Element Analysis to give the required longitudinal strength.

The interior style remains a closely guarded secret, but heritage was of prime importance. French designer Christophe Leoni , who had previously worked on some of the owner’s residences and palaces, brought similar styles on board, including a wealth of wood furniture intricately veneered with mother of pearl marquetry.

One of Pedol’s most vivid memories is of Azzam ’s first sea trial, when the builders, designers and engineers could finally appreciate the results of their work and calculations. “We boarded at midnight because the Lürssen yard is 60 miles upriver from the sea, and we spent the night at three knots,” he says. “At 07:00 in the morning the project manager called me and said: ‘Come and see.’ It turned out we were already travelling at 32 knots, but it didn’t feel like it. The four waterjets created a very high wake, and [to see the yacht in action], it was a very emotional moment. It was just spectacular…”

10 facts about the superyacht Azzam

1. Azzam was never conceived as the world’s largest superyacht

The design was to be high speed and accommodate a certain interior plan and number of guests, but it was originally envisaged as 145 metres overall. As the need to optimise the structure, and create space for complex engine systems, fuel and tenders developed, together with an elegant exterior sporting a long, sweeping bow and swept back stern, the design grew by another 35 metres to become a recordbreaker.

2. It took more than 4,000 people to build

Rightly thought of as a gigayacht, Azzam took four years to build at German shipyard Lürssen and is said to have cost more than US$500m. Some 4,000 people were involved in the build over four years, clocking up six million man-hours before her launch in April 2013. The builders calculated that had the yacht been built by one person, work would have had to start in 1737BC.

3. Azzam is one of the world’s fastest superyachts

The brief for Azzam was for a vessel that could travel as fast as possible to the owner’s private island off the coast of Abu Dhabi, and she can cover the journey in a matter of hours at her top speed of 33 knots.

4. Azzam is as fast as a Navy frigate and uses similar technology

Top speed is produced by two gas turbine engines and 2 x MTU diesel engines driving two Wartsila axial flow Modular waterjets and two boosters. Altogether they produce 97,000hp and consume 13 tonnes of fuel per hour at top speed.

5. There is a long range mode as well as a ‘sprint mode’

Azzam also has two conventional diesel engines for longer distance voyaging and extended range. Two 9,000kW MTU engines produce a speed of 18 knots over long distances – she could comfortably cross the Atlantic without refuelling.

6. You can practice golf on board

Guests can stay fit by using the onboard gym, pool or practising their swing in a special ‘golf training room’.

7. Over 100 people can live aboard

Azzam accommodates up to 36 guests in supreme comfort, and to look after them there is a crew of between 70 and 80 people.

8. There is a huge open plan main saloon

The large open plan main saloon measures 29 metres long by 18 metres, with no pillars to obstruct the views inside, and it is flanked by full height windows for an expansive view outside. “It was quite a challenge to make this space with no pillars,” observes Mario Pedol, adding that the beams on the ceiling had to be 1 metre in width. Making sure the huge windows were fully stormproof meant the glass had to be specially engineered in Italy and it is over 7cm thick.

9. The interior boasts a wealth of mother of pearl

The furniture on board features intricate marquetry in mother of pearl – such a wealth that it equates to a year’s worth of worldwide production

10. The chandelier doesn’t rattle

A huge amount of work was put into ensuring that the noise and vibration levels of Azzam were very low, even at full speed. Designers and engineers had to ensure the chandelier in the main salon didn’t tinkle underway. “It was difficult to know in advance how this would behave, but it was tested in every possible way with sophisticated software and set up challenging targets and it was not a problem,” says Mario Pedol.

THE world's biggest superyacht could soon gain a new owner - but they'll need to fork out more than $600million to get it.

The Azzam yacht immediately took the record for world's most lucrative vessel when it was constructed in 2013.

The Azzam yacht is the largest in the world at almost 600 ft

Toppling Roman Abramovich's superyacht from the top spot was no small order, with the ship being valued at $605million and taking four years to build.

The titanic vessel's last owner, former UAE President Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, passed away in May 2022 .

This could mean the record-shattering ship may soon change owners, according to Yacht Harbour .

The Azzam is almost 600ft long and can accommodate over 100 people - but they can't all be guests, as it needs at least 60 crewmembers to maintain.

Alongside being the largest superyacht in the world , it is also one of the fastest, with a top speed of around 33 knots (40mph).

The superyacht took over 4,000 people to to construct.

In fact, it was so massive that the builders calculated that had the yacht been built by one person, work would have had to start in 1737BC.

But if the Azzam is snapped up, it would be half a billion well spent, as it comes equipped with some luxury features.

The new owners could enjoy amenities including an onboard gym, swimming pools, a golf training room, private submarines and a helipad.

Azzam: World's largest superyacht sails into the record books

The superyacht azzam is the biggest vessel of its kind. the owner is still a mystery, but the name, which is arabic for 'determined', suggests it will be heading for the middle east..

The residents of Bremen, north Germany, are used to seeing some incredible sights emerging from the gigantic yellow Lürssen Yachts dry dock on the bank of the Weser river. But no one had seen anything quite like the massive vessel that was slowly tugged out into public view for the first time on the overcast morning of April 5.

This was Azzam, not only the latest superyacht to grace the water but at 180 metres long also the largest, leaving the previous title-holder - Roman Abramovich's 162.5m Eclipse - trailing in its wake.

It was not the first glimpse of the new queen of the oceans. In May last year, speculation about the latest Lürssen project flared when, minus her bow section, she was moved quietly to the covered dock from her construction shed - for the simple reason that, at 170m long, the shed was too short to accommodate the full length of what would soon be the world's largest superyacht.

Speculation about the identity of Azzam's owner has been rife for much of the three years it has taken to build her. Initially, it was assumed that she had been ordered by a member of the Saudi royal family - the name of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal, one of the richest people in the world and a known super-yacht enthusiast, was suggested.

Other rumours have placed the home port of Azzam - which is Arabic for "determined" and also the name chosen for Team Abu Dhabi's entry in the Volvo Ocean Race - in the Arabian Gulf.

This month's launch, conveniently in time for the 2013 Mediterranean superyachting season that begins at the end of May with the Monaco Grand Prix , has caused waves in an industry not easily impressed.

Quite apart from her world-beating size, the yacht was built in a record three years. Powered by four engines - two diesel and two gas turbines pushing out 94,000 horsepower - she is capable of reaching speeds in excess of 30 knots (55kph), more usually associated with fast military-patrol vessels.

This means that if the owner desires, Azzam could cover the 4,000 nautical miles from the Mediterranean to Martinique, for the start of the Caribbean season in November, in a little more than five days.

Not that most owners would make such a voyage, instead choosing instead to fly to meet their yacht when it relocates to a distant destination.

In fact, most owners of the very largest yachts do not spend a huge amount of time on them, says Don Hoyt Gorman, the business editor of TheSuperyacht Report.

"They tend to be very busy individuals who are running a series of corporations," he says.

But when they and their often extensive families are on board "they are really away from the public eye, which is one of the main reasons owners of large yachts want them. And they are also obviously fantastic as well for entertaining clients and business partners".

Size, he says, is not merely a product of billionaire one-upmanship, but there is no doubt that super-yachts, like tall buildings, are growing larger. In the 1980s, a 25m yacht would have been considered large, but now there are about 30 superyachts afloat that are more than 100m long.

For the sake of scale, even Aristotle Onassis's famous Christina O - which was converted in 1954 from a former Canadian navy Second World War convoy escort, and in its heyday the definitive superyacht - falls relatively short at 99m, a little more than half the length of Azzam.

"There was plenty of speculation about 10 years ago, when yachts that were about 120m were being produced, that they were going to be the exception to the rule and there wouldn't be any need to go any larger," says Gorman. "But then there was a significant series of orders placed for very large yachts."

One of the key drivers of the new trend has been the new Passenger Yacht Code, which was introduced in November 2010 by the Red Ensign Group, a collaboration of international shipping registers under whose flag - the British Red Ensign - most superyacht owners choose to sail. It created a separate category of pleasure yachts of any size that carry between 13 and 36 passengers.

It had, said the group, become "increasingly impractical" to apply to pleasure yachts the rules and regulations of the International Maritime Organisation, which had been developed chiefly for cargo ships and passenger vessels.

"Until that code was passed, private yachts were only allowed to have 12 guests aboard, no matter how large the vessel," says Gorman. "And it has allowed much larger yachts."

Any vessel carrying more than 36 passengers would need to be classified as a cruise ship and all the cruise-ship regulations would then apply, such as those dictating the width of the staircases, the fire retardant materials used and, indeed, the design of the vessel itself.

The result, Gorman says, would restrict how designers could work and how superyachts could operate commercially - "and you'd end up with vessels that looked like cruise ships".

So does that mean Azzam's record is safe? Probably not, says Gorman. According to the industry rumour mill, nothing is being built at the moment that comes close to it.

"But there's really no question, I think, that someone will come along and decide to build something larger, just because they can, and there are a number of yards that can build to that size," he adds.

How much Azzam cost to build remains confidential, although media estimates of the cost of Abramovich's smaller Eclipse, built by Blohm + Voss in Hamburg, Germany, and launched in 2010, have ranged from US$500 million (Dh1.8 billion) to $1bn.

Whatever the cost, says Gorman, running the ship will put a further - and continuing - dent in any billionaire's finances.

"There's a rough rule of thumb we use, that it's about 10 per cent of the cost of the original build to operate and maintain a vessel every year," he says. "It's a significant cost. But of course, we are dealing with people for whom, if they are going to be buying a yacht in the first place, these costs are within their ability to manage."

Besides, he adds, a superyacht is a good investment. "A vessel that is well maintained will keep its value for ever - there have been no yachts that have been scrapped," he says.

The industry, Gorman says, is determined to grow, by tempting more billionaires to sample life on the ocean wave.

"You'd be surprised," he says. "But a very small proportion of people who can afford yachts actually own them." The reason is straightforward. "Just think about your group of friends - how many people would be seasick? The thought of going on a boat isn't necessarily appealing to everybody."

What many people do not realise, he says, is that modern superyachts "are incredibly stable".

"The technology that goes into keeping them flat on the water, even when there are waves and swell all around, is amazing."

The industry's goal is to encourage more people to think about purchasing a yacht by getting them to charter, says Gorman. "Charter is really the first step to see whether you enjoy excellent service, all the privacy you can imagine, a really adventurous lifestyle, a fantastic holiday," he says.

One of the main charter portals is SuperYachtsMonaco - whose website, tellingly, is available in only three languages: English, Arabic and Russian.

Most of us, of course, are unlikely ever to sample the high life on board an Azzam or an Eclipse - but that does not mean we do not stand to benefit from the very existence of these maritime monsters, according to the superyacht industry.

High-profile vessels such as Azzam are seen as flag-bearers for an industry keen to broaden its appeal and to demonstrate that it is a key economic driver.

"There are thousands of people involved in the construction of such a yacht," says Peter Lürssen, Lürssen's managing partner, after Azzam's launch. "A thousand at our group and many more thousands in the industry supporting us."

As part of the industry's drive to win recognition of its role as a generator of wealth and employment, Superyacht Intelligence last year published the first comprehensive economic analysis of the super-yacht industry.

It found that superyachts - vessels defined by the Superyacht Intelligence Agency as more than 30m in length - contributed no less than $31.5bn to the global economy in 2010, creating 33,000 crew jobs, and supporting more than 6,000 companies employing as many as 150,000 people.

The country that benefited most was the US, where suppliers and manufacturers accounted for more than half of the near $6bn generated in national revenue, and in excess of 28,000 jobs depended on superyachts.

But the UAE - where Abu Dhabi is developing yards and related services, including ADM Shipyard, which in 2011 launched the 141m superyacht Yas - also featured in the report, with almost 1,000 jobs and revenue of $220m linked to the superyacht industry.

The analysis, concluded the authors, "should clearly demonstrate that the economic impact of superyachts is, undefinably, vast and should not be underestimated. Countries the world over gain economic contribution from superyachts, and as an industry it must be seen as a source of jobs and positive impacts".

Should you find yourself wondering whether the high life on the high seas is for you, why not charter before you buy? It is, of course, now only the second largest superyacht in the world but, unlike Azzam, Eclipse is at least available to rent - yours for $2m a week through SuperYachtsMonaco.

Enjoy the Grand Prix.

Gigayacht, “Azzam” Reaches 31.5 Knots For New Owner

azzam yacht new owner

She was officially unveiled for the first time in April following 3 years at Lurssen’s docks in Bremen.

Azzam has taken pole position as the world’s largest yacht off Eclipse, a 533′ boat owned by Roman Abramovich. Shecan travel in excess of 30 knots, with power coming from a combination of two gas turbines and two diesel engines with a total of 94,000 horsepower.

Peter Seyfferth, from TheYachtPhoto.com, said: “During the 3 days of trials, Azzam reached an amazing top speed of 31.5 knots, making her not only the longest but also by far the fastest megayacht in the world. Such a speed is absolutely exceptional for a yacht of this size. Her elegant, sleek lines are another feature which distinguish Azzam from all the other yachts above 150 meters.”

Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi was the engineer behind the gigayacht , and assembled a team to work on the ultra-sophisticated project.

He was told by the yacht’s secret buyer to build a vessel which was innovative and had a timeless design which would be able to travel at high speed and in shallow waters.

The exterior design, which has been described as ‘surprisingly slender’ was carried out by Nauta Yachts, with interior designer Christophe Leoni working on Azzam’s inside.

Azzam is expected to be delivered to its owner later this year.

UAE president’s megayacht Azzam is world’s longest, one of most luxurious

azzam yacht new owner

Azzam, owned by UAE’s president, has held the record for world’s longest privately-owned superyacht since 2013 at 180 metres. It is considered as one of the most luxurious and among the most mysterious. It is also the biggest project ever undertaken by world-famous German shipyard, Lurssen Yachts.

The megayacht has a steel hull and aluminum superstructure, with a generous interior volume of 13,136 GT spread across five decks.

Azzam is listed for charter, though a price was never mentioned. Urban legend has it that the listing is merely for tax purposes since chartered vessels are not subject to property tax.

azzam yacht new owner

Accommodation on board is for up to 36 guests and up to 70 crew, and while no photos were ever released of the interior, it is said to be dripping in luxury. The owner’s suite is said to be bulletproof and the ship is believed to have an anti-missile system.

Azzam was designed to be capable of catering large parties with zero compromises on performance. It had to be big and accommodating and still be able to zoom to and from at a high speed so guests could travel with ease and maximum efficiency. The goal was never to deliver the longest yacht in the world.

Its price is estimated at $605 million, with a $60 million reported figure going into annual maintenance alone.

It is not the most expensive in the world, and also not the biggest, but currently holds onto the title of world’s longest. It will lose the title once REV Ocean is delivered.

The world’s largest private yacht, Project Azzam, has been launched!

At just over 590 feet, the yacht known as “Project Azzam” has been launched and is now the largest privately owned yacht in the world. She beats out the current title holder, “Eclipse,” by an amazing 54′. Engineer Mubarak Saad al Ahbabi personally assembled a world-class team and lead them in all areas of development of this sophisticated project. It was under his leadership that Azzam was developed from her original concept to her final requirements in general layout, performance, size and exterior style. The ideas started as a thought to build a luxurious large yacht which would feature a timeless and innovative design and could travel at high speed, even in warm and shallow waters, while still providing sophisticated and luxurious accommodation for guests. Working alongside Mr. al Ahbabi, Azzam’s techincal engineering was developed by Lurssen, her exterior by Nauta Yachts, and her interior styling by Christophe Leoni, which all combines to present the most challenging and complex yacht ever built.

This yacht breaks new ground in many ways. From technology, to diemensions, and performance this yacht is state-of-the-art. Aside from being the largest yacht in the world (at an unprecedented 180 meters) and aside from being built in a record amount of time (having spent just three years in build followed by one year of engineering) she can still hit speeds of over 30 knots! Azzam truthfully  represents a milestone for not only Lurssen’s history but for the yachting industry as well.
