The cover photo is a picture of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club at the end of Eleventh Street (NE First Street in today’s address scheme), on Biscayne Bay. The clubhouse was built on a dock at the end of the street leveraging riparian rights donated by Henry Flagler. The club was constructed in 1909 and opened on February 15, 1910.
The club unofficially began in February 1887 when Coconut Grove resident Kirk Munroe suggested a boat race on Biscayne Bay to celebrate Washington’s birthday. The race was considered a great success and Kirk and Ralph Munroe, no relation, decided to form the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club in May of 1887. Ralph Munroe was named the first Commodore and Kirk Munroe was named Secretary of the club.
According to the club’s website:
“The first permanent clubhouse, in 1892, was the second floor of Commodore Munroe’s boathouse where it remained until 1905. It then moved into its own building, a two-story structure built on pilings on the end of a dock, a few feet southwest along the shore from the original site, but still on the Commodore’s property.”

The club made its move to downtown Miami in 1910 where it resided until the process of dredging to create land for a park began in 1924. Once Bay Front Park was complete, a new clubhouse opened on the southeast corner of the park in 1925. However, the great hurricane of September 1926 damaged the building, the club’s property, and records and led to the abandonment of the building shortly after the storm. Given the devastation of the hurricane and the end of the building boom of the 1920s, many of the club’s members sold their yachts and resigned from the club.
The remaining members continued to meet at Commodore Matheson’s office on S.W. Second Avenue and the Miami River for the next six years. In 1932, Matheson was instrumental in acquiring land along South Bayshore Drive in Coconut Grove to build the clubhouse that is still in use today.

Miami Yacht Club Racing
The Miami Yacht Club is one of the 5 sailing yacht clubs making up the Biscayne Bay Yacht Racing Association (BBYRA) . We host MYC regatta’s, BBYRA regattas, and of course weekly Wednesday Beer Can Races. We are the only club with a white sand beach for easy launching of racing dinghies, beach catamarans, and windsufing boards. The club is an incubator for dinghy racing platforms and our fleet includes foiling platforms, ranging from the Nacra 15, Nacra 17, iFLY15, Waspz and UFO.
Our sailors have represented the Miami Yacht Club all over the world: from youth events to the Olympics. Through the efforts of our internationally recognized coaches, dedicated sailors and MYC families, we are truly the “Home of Sailing Champions!”

Wednesday Beer Can Races
Beer Can races take place every Wednesday from 4PM to sundown. Members and guest are welcome to join with their own boats or use the MYC Rental Fleet.
Non-members can rent as long as they are the guest of a current MYC member.

With 33 teams representing 7 nations, the event showcased fantastic Star boat racing over three intense days of competition. Six races in two days for the 2024 Star Western Hemisphere in Miami Another three races were sailed on Day Two of the 2024 Star Western Hemisphere in Miami, Florida. A wavy Biscayne Bay offered a great stage for a regatta with a steady Northeasterly breeze blowing from 11 knots in the first run (race 4 of the Championship) to 18 in the last one – sixth overall. Three races on Day One in Miami despite the changing wind conditions Day One of the 2024 Star Western Hemisphere wasn’t an easy one, both for the competitors nor for the Race Committee. The first race was sailed with a dying breeze still coming from 330 that didn’t even allor all of the 33 teams to finish within the time limit, then, after quite the wait on the water, the wind switched and for race 2 and 3 came from 130, starting light and then picking up. Miami Awning Shade Solutions Since 1929. Biscayne Bay Yacht ClubJuly 5, 2017 by SERENE GATO Custom AwningCoconut grove, fl. This client had individual awnings over the east elevation of the building that were not aesthetically appealing and in very bad shape. They wanted weather and shade protection for those dining inside. They also wanted something totally different. This project consists of one long continuous awning that highlights the arches of a historic building for the Biscayne Yacht Club on Bayshore Drive in Miami, FL. The awnings were custom designed to follow the arches of the building’s façade. The frame work was very custom, as well as the fabric to follow the arches, since the middle arch was different from the other two arches on each side. The anchorage needed to bolt into a coral rock structure that is very close by the water. Special adhesive chemical anchors were used to anchor the awnings to the wall. There are also ceiling liners covering the undersides of portions of the long awning that cover the framework of the awning. The fabric used is Sunbrella Firesist Regatta Blue. The OutcomeThe clients are extremely pleased with the new awnings. This is a historic building, on the bay with a beautiful setting that is used for sailing and social events. Located on beautiful Biscayne Bay, a lot of sailing and social events as well as weddings are scheduled throughout the year. The new awnings give the illusion of waves and blends well with the architecture of the structure. The selection of Regatta blue by Sunbrella Firesist highlights that they are a Yacht Club. One of the members is architect C. Frasuer Knight, a member of the Biscayne Bay Yacht Club since the 1940’s. These awnings are the something different that they wanted for the Club. 1946, the Coconut Grove Sailing Club was started by a group of Miami residents based on a shared love for sailing, a passion for Biscayne Bay and, a spirit of volunteerism in providing community service.
