The Historic Seaport offers many options for dining, shopping, and sightseeing. Take a trolley or tour train for a quick overview of the island. The well-known bars and restaurants are a short walk from the docking area.

Tips to Make Your Afternoon in Key West a Pleasure

The island is very small. The streets in the older sections of town are narrow, and parking is limited. The best way to get around is on foot or by bicycle.

If you’re going to spend the day on foot, be sure to bring comfortable shoes, and pack only a light bag. Think of it like walking a big theme park like Disney World. You’ll do far more walking than you will sitting, and you will be carrying anything you brought with you all day.

Make sure you have a hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen. The topical sun at this latitude can be very intense in the early afternoons.

Keep your camera handy, there are lots of interesting sites and people that you will want to share with friends and family. For those of you that like to post to social media instantly, your ability to do so will depend on your cellular carrier and where you are at the moment. You might want to shoot lots of pictures and upload later.

Tip from the conchs that know, there is a Walgreens on Duval and Southard just a few steps down from Jimmy Buffet’s Margaritaville. Any essentials from film to bottled water can be picked up easily there, and if you have a discount card, they’ll honor it just like any other Walgreens in the country.

If you’d rather not do so much walking, try a bicycle. There are several bicycle rental shops all over Key West. Or if you have your bike with you in Florida, the Key West Express will let you take it along on the ferry.

If you’re taking the Key West Express back to Marco Island, the ship begins boarding at 4:00 p.m. The return trip to Ft. Myers boards at 5:00 p.m.

Table of Contents

Short Answer

A catamaran ferry is a type of ferry boat that is designed with two hulls connected by a frame.

It is generally used for passenger and freight transportation in shallow waters.

Catamaran ferries are typically much faster and more efficient than traditional monohull ferries, and can carry a larger number of passengers and cargo.

They are also more stable in rough seas , making them an ideal choice for ferry routes with a lot of choppy water.

What is a Catamaran Ferry?

A catamaran ferry is a type of vessel that is designed with two hulls, or pontoons, for increased stability and capacity.

This unique design not only allows for larger carrying capacities, but also allows for a more comfortable and smoother ride.

The two hulls provide improved buoyancy, which makes the vessel more stable and able to handle choppy waters.

Catamaran ferries are typically larger than other types of ferries, such as mono-hulls, and can typically carry more passengers and heavier cargo.

Additionally, the two hulls provide increased space for passengers to move around, which is ideal for larger groups.

Catamaran ferries are typically powered by diesel engines, and are capable of reaching higher speeds than traditional ferries.

This makes them ideal for short journeys, such as island hopping or as a commuter ferry, as they can get passengers to their destination quickly and efficiently.

Additionally, catamaran ferries are more fuel efficient than traditional ferries, allowing them to save money on fuel costs.

Catamaran ferries are also able to access shallow waters, which makes them a great option for exploring remote locations.

Additionally, their unique design allows them to easily maneuver in tight spaces, making them ideal for docking in small harbours or marinas.

Catamaran ferries can also be used for sightseeing tours, allowing passengers to get up close and personal with nature.

Overall, catamaran ferries provide a safe and efficient way for passengers to travel over water, and their unique design makes them ideal for a variety of uses.

Whether youre looking to explore a remote location, commute to work, or take a sightseeing tour, a catamaran ferry is an excellent option.

Benefits of Catamaran Ferries

catamaran ferry trips

The advantages of using a catamaran ferry are plentiful.

Firstly, they are incredibly stable, even in the roughest of seas, due to their multiple hulls, or pontoons, which provide excellent buoyancy and stability.

This makes them an ideal option for transporting large groups of people and goods, such as for island hopping or as a commuter ferry.

Catamaran ferries are also fast and fuel-efficient, often reaching higher speeds than traditional ferries and consuming less fuel in the process.

This makes them a popular choice for ferry operators, as they are able to transport more people in less time.

Catamaran ferries also provide a smoother ride than traditional ferries, thanks to their lightweight yet sturdy build.

This makes them ideal for those who are prone to seasickness, ensuring a comfortable journey for all.

Finally, catamaran ferries are able to access shallow waters, making them a great option for exploring remote locations or areas which are otherwise inaccessible.

This makes them an ideal choice for those looking to explore the worlds most remote and untouched places.

In conclusion, the benefits of using a catamaran ferry are clear.

The stability, speed, fuel efficiency, smooth ride, and shallow-water access make them the perfect choice for island hopping, commuting, or exploring the worlds most remote places.

Types of Catamaran Ferries

Catamaran ferries come in all shapes and sizes, ranging from small pleasure craft to large commercial vessels.

The most common type of catamaran ferry is the high-speed catamaran, which is designed to travel quickly over water, often at speeds of up to 40 knots.

These vessels are ideal for quick transport across short distances and are often used for island hopping or as a commuter ferry.

The other type of catamaran ferry is the larger, more traditional type, which are used for longer journeys.

These vessels are designed to provide a comfortable ride and are often equipped with amenities such as lounges, restaurants, and entertainment rooms.

They are also able to carry larger numbers of passengers and cargo, making them ideal for transporting large groups or goods.

For those looking for a more luxurious ride, there are also luxury catamaran ferries available.

These vessels are typically much larger and are equipped with all the amenities of a luxury cruise, such as private suites, a spa, and a wide variety of entertainment options.

These vessels are perfect for special occasions or luxury trips.

No matter what type of catamaran ferry you are looking for, there is sure to be one to suit your needs.

With the wide variety of sizes, speeds, and features available, you are sure to find the perfect vessel for your needs.

Advantages of Catamaran Ferries

catamaran ferry trips

Catamaran ferries offer a number of advantages over traditional ferries, making them an attractive option for water transportation.

The most notable of these advantages is their increased stability and capacity.

The hulls, or pontoons, of a catamaran ferry are wider than those of a traditional ferry, allowing them to carry larger loads with greater stability.

This makes catamaran ferries ideal for transporting large groups of people and goods, and they are often used in coastal and cross-water transportation, such as for island hopping or as a commuter ferry.

Catamaran ferries are also faster and more fuel efficient than traditional ferries, allowing them to cover greater distances in less time.

This makes them a great option for travelers looking to explore remote locations, as they are able to access shallow waters that traditional ferries may not be able to reach.

Additionally, the increased stability of catamaran ferries means they provide a smoother ride than traditional ferries, making them more comfortable for passengers.

Finally, catamaran ferries are often more eco-friendly than traditional ferries, as they require less fuel to operate and emit fewer pollutants.

This makes them a great option for environmentally conscious travelers who want to reduce their carbon footprint.

Overall, catamaran ferries offer a number of advantages over traditional ferries, making them an attractive option for water transportation.

They are more stable and can carry larger loads, are faster and more fuel efficient, and provide a smoother ride.

Additionally, they are often more eco-friendly than traditional ferries, making them a great option for travelers looking to reduce their environmental impact.

Disadvantages of Catamaran Ferries

While catamaran ferries offer many advantages, there are also some disadvantages to consider.

For example, while catamaran ferries are generally more stable than traditional monohull ferries, they do not have any lateral stability and can be subject to strong winds and waves, making them less suitable for long-distance journeys.

Additionally, catamaran ferries are more expensive to build and maintain than monohulls, and require regular maintenance to ensure the hulls remain in good condition.

Finally, catamaran ferries may not be able to access some areas due to their shallow draft, which limits their ability to navigate certain waterways.

Where to Find Catamaran Ferries

catamaran ferry trips

Catamaran ferries can be found all around the world, and they are increasingly popular for both recreational and commercial purposes.

In the United States, catamaran ferries are frequently used for inter-island transportation in Hawaii, as well as for transportation between coastal cities in the Pacific Northwest and Alaska.

Catamaran ferries are also popular in the Caribbean, where they are used for island hopping and coastal transportation.

You can also find catamaran ferries in Europe, Asia, South America, and many other regions of the world.

In addition to traditional ferry services, many private operators also offer charter services on catamaran ferries.

These services can range from private day trips to longer excursions, and they can provide an exciting and unique experience for those looking to explore the open waters.

Private operators may also offer specialized services, such as wildlife tours or dinner cruises.

If you are looking for a unique and relaxing way to explore the waters, a charter catamaran ferry may be the perfect choice.

Common Uses of Catamaran Ferries

Catamaran ferries are a popular choice for many different types of transportation needs.

These vessels are often used in coastal and cross-water transportation, such as for island hopping or as a commuter ferry.

They are also used for transporting large groups of people and goods, as well as for exploring remote, shallow waters.

Catamaran ferries are also gaining popularity as a popular mode of transportation for tourists and adventurers.

Catamaran ferries are commonly used for sightseeing tours, whale watching, and other recreational activities.

They provide a smooth and comfortable ride, and their design allows them to access shallow waters and small ports.

This makes them a great option for visiting remote locations and exploring places that traditional ferries cannot go.

Catamaran ferries are also often used for ferrying passengers and goods between islands, or from the mainland to an island.

These vessels are often equipped with amenities such as restrooms, seating, and snacks, making them ideal for longer trips.

Additionally, the multiple hulls of catamaran ferries provide a higher level of stability than traditional ferries, making them a safer option for transporting large groups of people and goods.

Catamaran ferries are also becoming increasingly popular for cargo transportation.

Their speed and fuel efficiency make them a cost-effective option for transporting goods, and their ability to access shallow waters makes them ideal for navigating tight channels and harbors.

Additionally, their large capacity allows for the transportation of larger cargo loads, making them a popular choice for commercial shipping operations.

Overall, catamaran ferries are a versatile and efficient type of vessel that can be used for a variety of transportation needs.

Their stability, speed, fuel efficiency, and ability to access shallow waters make them a great option for coastal and cross-water transportation, recreational activities, passenger and goods transportation, and commercial shipping operations.

Final Thoughts

From island hopping to exploring remote locations, catamaran ferries offer a unique and efficient means of transportation.

With increased stability and capacity, greater speed and fuel efficiency, and access to shallow waters, catamaran ferries provide a range of advantages for travelers.

Whether you’re looking to explore the world or just commute, catamaran ferries provide a great option for transportation.

So if you’re looking to find out more about catamaran ferries, be sure to explore the different types and uses available, and find the right option for your travel needs.

🏆 OUR TOP PICK FOR A CATAMARAN DAY TRIP IN PUERTO RICO – Icacos Deserted Island Catamaran & Picnic Cruise

What to look for in a Catamaran Trip?

There are several things you need to check before finding your perfect catamaran trip. What is “perfect” for me, may be different than what is “perfect” for you.

  • Are you feeling social? Check to see if the tour is private (just your party) or a small group made up of different parties.
  • What is your budget? When shopping for catamaran tours, be sure and check the price. Specifically, check to see if the price is total, or per person. Enter the number of people you want to bring and see what the price is.
  • How much time do you have? Are you in Puerto Rico for 4 days ? Do you have only a few hours as a cruise stop? Make sure the tour you are looking at correlates with the time you have allotted.
  • Where are you? Check the details of the tour to see if the departure point is near where you will be staying.
  • What kind of vibe do you want? Are you looking for a party boat? A luxurious or romantic dinner? Do you want to swim? Check the details to make sure there are no unwelcome surprises on the day of your catamaran trip.
  • Read the reviews. I always read reviews before making a decision. Keep in mind, you can’t please everyone, so there will usually be at least one negative review for the tour operators. Don’t let one review discourage you, but instead, read through a few reviews and notice any patterns. If one subject comes up consistently, it is likely accurate.

What to pack on a Catamaran Day Trip in Puerto Rico

Now that you have decided which catamaran trip to book, you’ll need to know what to bring with you! Never fear, I’ve got you covered.

🤿 MASK AND SNORKEL

Most of these tours include snorkeling equipment, and that is totally fine to use theirs if you wish. However, if you want to bring your own for sanitary reasons, or to ensure they fit the way you like, you can do that too!

This mask and snorkel set is very popular, my kids love this one. I prefer this mask and snorkel combo with a GoPro attachment. I love how it frees up both hands while snorkeling!

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B092DM7SG1&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Shop Snorkel Masks

📱 Waterproof Phone Holder

Even though a lot of cell phones are water resistant, salt water can damage them. If you are wanting to take photos from the catamaran or while snorkeling get one of these inexpensive phone holders .

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B09PBB9MJQ&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Shop Waterproof Phone Holders Now

📸 Waterproof Camera

A cell phone can take pretty good photos, but if you want to snorkel and get incredible videos of tropical fish, bring a GoPro ! My GoPro is a must on all snorkeling trips! I even took it with me to swim with sharks in the Bahamas.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B0B96H7LGX&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Check out GoPros Here

🏝 Fast Drying Towel

One of the best things to bring on your catamaran trip is a lightweight and fast drying towel . These don’t take up much room in your bag and will be a great item to have for the ride back to land.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07VVNJMRG&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Purchase a Light Weight Fast Drying Towel

☀️ Reef Safe Sunscreen

If you are heading anywhere in the Caribbean you definitely need sunscreen. Be sure to only wear reef-safe sunscreen to help protect the reefs and marine life. I love this combo because it comes with an after-sun gel too! Don’t forget chapstick with SPF protection!

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B07BJBP7JN&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Buy Reef Safe Sunscreen and Chapstick Here

👙Rash Guard or SwimSuit

Of course, you will need a swimsuit if you planning on spending the day on the water. Another good thing to think about is purchasing a rash guard . This can be in place of your swim suit, or over the top. Rash guards are lightweight, dry quickly, and help protect you from sunburn. This limits the amount of sunscreen you need to put on as well!

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B08ZCMVV7C&Format= SL160 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Purchase a Rashguard for Men or Women by Clicking Here

🧢 Hat

Grab a hat to help keep the sun off your face, but also to control your hair after being in the water and wind! This one is super cute, or this one may be more your style.

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B079NC3YK4&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Check this hat out , or this one instead

🎒Beach Bag

Grab a cute beach bag to carry all of your things on to the catamaran and beach! I like to bring a pretty large bag , and that way I can keep everything in it and have room for a few souvenirs too!

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B09QBZY38F&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

➡️ Click Here to Buy a Beach Bag

🏖 Floaties

Some tours provide floats or tubes to get in the water with, but you cant guarantee they will have enough for everyone or they will be one you like. I know a float isn’t something most people get excited about but let me tell you how OBSESSED I am with these floaties !

They pack up so small, weigh nothing, are easy to inflate, and are so comfortable in the water. They are a must for me when making my Caribbean packing list !

q? encoding=UTF8&ASIN=B073WMLBGP&Format= SL250 &ID=AsinImage&MarketPlace=US&ServiceVersion=20070822&WS=1&tag=ckincy 20&language=en US

Everything was well organized. The crew was super friendly and professional. Even lunch break, which is usually “plain” was very good. The snorkeling was a fun experience but the highlight of this excursion was definitely the flamenco beach! It’s a trip I recommend.

Will definitely use East Island Excursions again

Very well organized and punctual, staff were professional and knowledgeable. Will definitely recommend East Island Excursions for Culebra trip.

Food and drinks were excellent lots of it plus snorkeling equipment was in excellent condition. Culebra trip was fun and will definitely use East Island Excursions again.

Full Day Snorkeling & Beach Trip to Culebra

This was a FANTASTIC excursion & my family & I (3 adults) would do this again in a heartbeat. The boat is clean, beautiful & well maintained. The crew is so nice & professional, & they take passenger safety & satisfaction seriously while ensuring FUN! Our trip had a diverse mix of ages, which was nice.

The boat ride from the m arina to the snorkeling spot in Culebra took about 1 hour 15 min. to get to & we left promptly at 9am. We snorkeled for about an hour with the lunch buffet put out during that time. An hour was plenty IMO & we did not feel rushed or unable to enjoy our lunch, which was a nice spread. There were even options for my vegetarian husband to enjoy. The beverages did not disappoint. The snorkeling was so beautiful & everything is provided.

Our captain was unable to take us to Flamenco Beach safely due to conditions, so instead we were taken to Culebrita island to spend about 2 hrs +/- for beach time. It was GORGEOUS! We swam, relaxed, & had the best time & it appeared that everyone else did as well. The return trip back to the marina took about the same time as going out.

Highest ratings for Capt. Javi & his crew – Dani, Angel, Adrian, & Diego (sorry if I missed anyone). I was truly impressed with the level of service they provided to everyone on board. I was initially hesitant to book this trip out of concern for it being too crowded or too much of a younger, party-hard crowd, but that was not at all the case. East Island Excursions does a top-notch job & I highly recommend them based on my experience.

This experience is one to remember

I was extremely pleased with the customer service on this excursion. Anyone can take the ferry in Puerto Rico and have access to culebra beaches, but this experience is one to remember and not one to miss. I came with my family (6 people) and at first we were hesitant about the price compared to just taking the ferry but it was worth every $. I vacation often and take many excursions and not often do I feel like you get the true value of what you pay for, but with this company you do.

We did the half day tour to culebra (flamenco beach) and snorkeling. Everything you need is provided for you expect sunscreen and a towel. I will definitely be back.

World’s First Entirely Hydrogen-Powered Ferry Welcomes Passengers on July 19 in San Francisco Bay

San Francisco, CA — July 12, 2024  — Today San Francisco Bay Ferry and a group of private and public sector partners launched the MV  Sea Change , the world’s first commercial passenger ferry powered 100% by zero-emission hydrogen fuel cells. The vessel will begin service to the public on July 19, offering free transportation between Pier 41 and the Downtown San Francisco Ferry Terminal.

The  Sea Change  represents an enormous milestone toward efforts to decarbonize the maritime industry. It will operate as a part of the San Francisco Bay Ferry network for a six-month demonstration period designed to showcase the application of fuel cell technology as a viable strategy for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and improving air quality. The vessel emits only water vapor, a portion of which is remineralized and used in the onboard water fountain, making it the only vessel in the world with drinkable emissions.

The vessel is owned by SWITCH Maritime, and was developed by the company with support from a grant provided by the California Air Resources Board (CARB). The demonstration service is made possible thanks to sponsorships from a group of partners including Chevron New Energies; the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway, and Transportation District; and United Airlines. The service will be operated by San Francisco Bay Ferry’s contract operator, Blue & Gold Fleet.

“California is a global leader in the fight against the climate crisis, pioneering new technologies to ramp up clean energy and cut pollution — that’s why the zero-emission  Sea Change  is so exciting,” said California Governor Gavin Newsom. “I’m proud of our state’s role in advancing these innovations, and of our state’s public and private sector partners for bringing them to market and demonstrating their viability.”

“The  Sea Change  is a real-world, practical example of how the government and private sector can work together to help demonstrate the commercial viability and increase consumer confidence in hydrogen,” said Austin Knight, vice president, Hydrogen, Chevron New Energies. “Hydrogen can play a key role in achieving a lower carbon future for public transportation. At Chevron we are focused on building partnerships to develop a large-scale hydrogen business to help advance energy progress.”

According to the  Congressional Budget Office , transportation is the largest source of carbon dioxide emissions in the United States. Advances in hydrogen fuel cell technology and other lower carbon or net neutral technologies come at an important time as  2024 is projected  to be one of the hottest years on record.

The  Sea Change  is part of  California Climate Investments , a statewide initiative that puts billions of cap-and-trade dollars to work, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, strengthening the economy, and improving public health and the environment, particularly in disadvantaged communities.

The  Sea Change  was developed in California and built by All American Marine in Bellingham, WA. “We’re very proud that this state-of-the-art vessel was built in Washington, and we are thrilled that it will be put into operation in the San Francisco Bay Area,” said Washington Governor Jay Inslee. “The  Sea Change  is a great example of Washington and California collaborating toward our shared goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and create a more sustainable future. I look forward to taking a ride next time I’m in San Francisco.”

“Providing access to this world-first technology for the thousands of future  Sea Change passengers is a key step toward protecting the environment,” said Jim Wunderman, Chair of the San Francisco Bay Ferry Board of Directors. “We have worked hard alongside our partners to make this groundbreaking ferry a reality, but it will be the passengers who bring it to life.”

"As a long-time advocate of Bay Area transit innovation and a member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, I am thrilled to support the launch of the world's first commercial hydrogen fuel ferry. The  Sea Change  will be a national model and represents a bold milestone in the future of clean energy transportation and infrastructure,” said U.S. Rep. Kevin Mullin, CA-15.

"The launch of the one-of-a-kind MV  Sea Change  represents a historic investment in the future of clean energy transportation and infrastructure in the United States,” said U.S. Rep. Jared Huffman, CA-2. “It should come as no surprise to see the Bay Area ferry service on the forefront of green transit innovation.“

“The California Air Resources Board (CARB) is excited to witness the clean transportation future in action with the launch of the MV  Sea Change  and is proud to be part of the partnership that made this vessel a reality. Thanks to cap-and-trade dollars at work through our California Climate Investments, innovative and sustainable transportation options like the  Sea Change  are being developed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve public health, particularly in California’s most vulnerable communities,” said CARB Chair Liane Randolph.

“We are thrilled to partner with San Francisco Bay Ferry and others to bring the first hydrogen passenger ferry to the Bay Area,” said Denis Mulligan, General Manager of the Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District. “This demonstration project provides an exciting glimpse into the clean and bright future of Bay Area water transportation.”

“The  Sea Change  represents an exciting transition to carbon-neutral fuel sources, charting a new course toward a cleaner future,” said Patrick Murphy, President of Blue & Gold Fleet.

“This is not just the start of service for the  Sea Change , but hopefully also the start of much more active investment in the energy transition of the maritime industry in California and beyond,” said Pace Ralli, CEO of SWITCH Maritime.

MV  Sea Change  is a 70-foot, 75-passenger catamaran ferry featuring an integrated hydrogen power system from Zero Emission Industries (ZEI) with 360kW of PEM fuel cells,100kWh of Li-Ion battery storage, and 600kW of electric motor propulsion, providing a top speed of 15 knots and service speed of 8-12 knots.

ABOUT SAN FRANCISCO BAY FERRY San Francisco Bay Ferry is a regional public transit agency tasked with developing, operating, and expanding ferry service on the San Francisco Bay and with coordinating the water transit response to regional emergencies. The agency operates ferry routes connecting the cities of Alameda, Oakland, Richmond, San Francisco, South San Francisco, and Vallejo. San Francisco Bay Ferry operates the cleanest ferry system in the country and is poised to reduce emissions even further with the launch of the nation’s first network of high-speed, rapid-charging, zero-emission ferries as part of its Rapid Electric Emission Free (REEF) Ferry Program. New Isles of Scilly ferry service postpones launch

The launch of the new trips has been postponed by the new company set up to rival the sole existing service

Atlantic Wolff, a new ferry between Penzance and Isles of Scilly operated by Scilly Ferries, part of the Harland & Wolff Group, arrives in Newlyn harbour in the evening of Wednesday, July 17, ahead of the first sailings next week.

The much-anticipated launch of a new rival ferry service to the Isles of Scilly has been postponed. The new company, Scilly Ferries, has cancelled its crossings that were scheduled for Monday at the last minute.

A passenger who was due to travel on Monday confirmed they were sent an email about the cancellation. There is no mention on the company's Facebook page where the last post is about the arrival of the new ferry, Atlantic Wolff, in Penzance Harbour this week, and there is no mention on its website.

For months shipbuilder Harland & Wolff (H&W) has been making waves with its plans to take on Isles of Scilly Steamship Group (IOSSG) which had a monopoly on travel to the archipelago via its Scillonian III ferry and flights from Land's End airport until the launch of Penzance Helicopter's flights a few years ago. H&W planned a new passenger and freight ferry of its own.

The firm has since acquired local freight firm KMS, which was rebranded Harland & Wolff Marine Services, providing two freight vessels between the islands, via main island St Mary's, and mainland Cornwall .

After some delays the Atlantic Wolff passenger catamaran sailed from a shipyard in Portsmouth to Newlyn on Tuesday (July 16) ahead of its intended maiden voyage to the Isles of Scilly on Monday (July 22), as new firm Scilly Ferries, promising a 90-minute trip, over an hour quicker than Scillonian III's at two hours and 45 minutes. It also claimed it would be cheaper but that's not always the case, as you can see in our direct comparisons here .

Now it seems this will not happen until at least Tuesday. Scilly Ferries has not yet replied to CornwallLive's request for comment.

However when we asked about Monday's trips via the Scilly Ferries contact page, it confirmed the postponement. It replied: "Unfortunately, we have has to alter our timetable slightly. The Atlantic Wolff is now in Penzance and is currently undertaking berthing trials both at Penzance quay and St Mary's Harbour over the weekend, however, operations have advised these will not be quite complete by 22nd and we are now looking at a start date of 23rd."

catamaran ferry trips

I took a $10 ferry to a scenic island just a few miles from Seattle. Its cute shops and restaurants make it a must-visit for tourists.

  • I took two ferries to get from Bremerton to Bainbridge Island in Washington .
  • Both ferries were clean, spacious, and comfortable, so I enjoyed the journey.
  • I loved downtown Bainbridge Island's independent stores and restaurants.

Insider Today

Since I moved to Washington, I've been trying to explore my area more . Recently, I took two ferries to Bainbridge Island, a popular spot for daytrippers.

Bainbridge Island is home to about 25,000 people , and the downtown area is full of independent stores, museums, restaurants, and bars. The island, located only a few miles from Seattle, is also known for its natural beauty and scenic nature trails.

Like many excited visitors, I looked forward to seeing the beautiful waterways and shops on the island, which USA Today readers named one of the best small towns in the West .

I took a day trip to the island from my home in Bremerton, which is about 16 miles from Seattle. For this trip, I took two vessels through the Washington State Department of Transportation, which operates the largest ferry system in the US.

Here's what the journey was like.

I started my journey to Bainbridge Island in Bremerton, the city where I live.

catamaran ferry trips

Despite being separated by less than a mile of water, it takes about an hour to drive from Bremerton to Bainbridge Island. I didn't want to drive, so I figured the ferries would be the best option.

For the first part of my journey , I headed to the ferry terminal in Bremerton and boarded the Walla Walla Ferry.

The ferry from Bremerton to Seattle took about an hour.

catamaran ferry trips

Traveling via the Washington State Ferries from Bremerton to Seattle was free, and no ticket was required for a single ride.

The ferry was pretty large and could carry up to 2,000 passengers , with a maximum of 188 vehicles able to fit on board. I didn't want to bring my car along on this journey, but it's good to know I have the option for future trips.

The Walla Walla ferry had plenty of seating and other amenities.

catamaran ferry trips

I noticed plenty of seating options inside and outside the cabin, including booths and individual seats.

The ferry was accessible with ramps and elevators, and had an outdoor deck, restrooms, and vending machines. However, there was no WiFi.

I enjoyed the views from my booth.

catamaran ferry trips

My favorite part about taking the ferries in Washington is the scenery. On a previous journey from Bremerton to Seattle, I spotted a pod of orcas.

This time, I chose a window seat in a booth and admired the view throughout the hourlong journey. I even thought the large cushions were quite comfortable for a commuter ferry.

Though it was a long journey, it was a peaceful and relaxing ride thanks to the slow speed and the views of glistening water, evergreen trees, and, eventually, the Seattle skyline.

I needed a ticket to board the next ferry for the second part of my journey.

catamaran ferry trips

When I arrived in Seattle, I disembarked the Walla Walla ferry and went inside the terminal building to wait for the next vessel.

Tickets for walk-on passengers could be purchased online or at the terminal booth. They cost about $9.90 for adults and $4.90 for those 65 and older, though they were free for passengers under 18.

There was a 20-minute wait between the ferries, so I sat in the terminal lounge, which had lots of seating, visitor information, vending machines, and restrooms.

The ride from Seattle to Bainbridge Island took 35 minutes.

catamaran ferry trips

My journey from Seattle to Bainbridge Island was aboard the Tacoma vessel , which frequents this route along with the Chimacum ferry.

The Tacoma is slightly larger than the Walla Walla and can fit 2,499 passengers and a maximum of 202 vehicles.

The Tacoma ferry featured a full-service restaurant, bar, and coffee shop.

catamaran ferry trips

Both ferries were similar, but this vessel had more amenities, including a coffee shop, bar, and restaurant. I noticed many tables, booths, and armchair-style seats.

Like the Walla Walla, this boat had an outdoor deck and was accessible with elevators and ramps. Unfortunately, this ferry didn't have WiFi either.

I grabbed a coffee and enjoyed the comfortable ferry ride.

catamaran ferry trips

I decided to grab a cappuccino at the on-board café before sitting down. Like my first journey, I opted for a window seat in a booth — but this time, I had a table.

Despite the shorter journey, this part of the trip was more comfortable due to the ferry's amenities, like the table and coffee shop.

Once we arrived, I spent four hours exploring Bainbridge Island's downtown area.

catamaran ferry trips

Downtown Bainbridge Island, also known as Winslow, seemed very walkable. The area is home to many independent stores, cafés, restaurants, bars, and the Bainbridge Island Museum of Art.

Pickleball was invented on Bainbridge Island, so many of the local shops played into this theme.

catamaran ferry trips

Most gift stores I visited carried pickleball-themed goods, like paddles, clothing, homeware, and stationary, because Joel Pritchard, Bill Bell, and Barney McCallum invented the game on Bainbridge Island in 1965.

I stopped for a tasty lunch, too.

catamaran ferry trips

After checking out some stores, I headed to a seafood restaurant called Proper Fish for lunch. I ordered the British fish and chips , which closely matched the dish I would enjoy in my native England.

Overall, the ferries were a great way to explore Bainbridge Island.

catamaran ferry trips

Although the journey times were long, the ferries were a great way to explore Washington, especially without a car.

Both ferries were clean and comfortable, and the free Walla Walla ferry and low prices for the Tacoma made them accessible for many budgets. Depending on the season, passengers may even get lucky and spot some wildlife on the rides.

I can't wait to take the ferry and see more of my state again.

NYC Ferry set to increase ticket prices in September

It’s about to get more expensive to ride NYC Ferry.

Starting Sept. 9, the cost of a ten-trip bundle will rise from $27.50 to $29, making each ticket $2.90 to align with subway and bus fares. Single-trip tickets will also see an increase from $4 to $4.50, the New York City Economic Development Corporation said in a release.

What You Need To Know

The cost of a ten-trip bundle will rise from $27.50 to $29, making each ticket $2.90 to align with subway and bus fares single-trip tickets will also see an increase from $4 to $4.50 in addition to fare changes, nyc ferry is enhancing its services with free wifi on all vessels, expanded language support and more.

Discounts will remain available through the NYC Ferry Discount Program — which is modeled after the city’s Fair Fares initiative for buses and subways — providing rides at $1.45 for seniors, people with disabilities and low-income riders.

Beginning Sept. 1, high school students citywide can also access reduced fares for weekday travel to and from school. Applications for this program open Aug. 1 on the New York City Student Account portal, the release said.

NYCEDC President Andrew Kimball noted that while fares are increasing, service and vessel upgrades can also be expected, including the return of the Rockaway Rocket, a summer-exclusive route offering trips from Long Island City and Greenpoint to Rockaway Beach.

"We will continue to build upon NYC Ferry Forward’s successes with new initiatives that support our mission of increasing access while fostering a fiscally sustainable citywide ferry system. And with the return of the Rockaway Rocket and other improved vessel upgrades, there is no better way to get around New York City this summer than aboard a NYC Ferry,” Kimball said in a statement.

In addition to fare changes, NYC Ferry is enhancing its services with free WiFi on all vessels, expanded language support on its app and website and automated audio-visual announcements for upcoming stops, according to the release.

Later this summer, riders will also be able to access real-time schedule updates via text or automated voice services, with future updates allowing real-time availability checks for seats on vessels and bike parking spots through the NYC Ferry app.

Operating six routes with 25 landings and 38 vessels covering more than 70 nautical miles, the NYC Ferry system already hit record ridership numbers in 2024, with over 7.1 million riders.

Lack of boats leads to canceled trips, long ferry lines in Anacortes

catamaran ferry trips

Three of the four boats that ply the waters between Anacortes and the San Juan Islands were out most of Thursday, leading to hourslong waits and headaches for travelers.

“It’s been a rough day,” said Justin Fujioka, a Washington State Ferries spokesperson.

By 3 p.m., all but one boat had returned to service, but more than 200 vehicles remained at Anacortes, the busiest of the terminals on the northern ferry circuit, which includes Friday Harbor and stops on Orcas, Shaw and Lopez islands.

“We are prioritizing people who have reservations. We started turning away people on standby,” he said, noting that he couldn’t say if all waiting passengers would get to sail by day’s end. “It’s hard to estimate how things will go the rest of the night. The crew that works [at Anacortes] said it will be close.”

The four boats on the Anacortes-San Juan Islands route usually run a fairly complex route, with one boat going between Anacortes and the islands; two boats serving Anacortes, Friday Harbor and some of the other island terminals; and one boat running only between the islands.

Trouble began when the captain of the Tillikum needed to get to Friday Harbor, where his boat began service. But he couldn’t because both the Samish and Yakima were out with mechanical issues. He eventually boarded the Kaleetan, the only boat of the four in service, which took him on an unscheduled trip to Friday Harbor to get a second boat up and running.

At that point, the two boats still out of service, the Samish and Yakima, were the only two scheduled to stop at Friday Harbor. So WSF changed the schedules of both the Kaleetan and Tillikum and had them sail to all terminals, leading to longer sailings and longer waits.

Just before 3 p.m., the Samish, which had an issue with an engine cylinder and was deemed unsafe to sail by its captain, was returned to service. The Yakima remains out of service with propulsion generator issues. Fujioka couldn’t say when it would return.

With three boats back, regularly scheduled service on the Anacortes-San Juan Islands route has been restored. But the final interisland sailing of the day is canceled, as it has been since July 1.

Correction: In an earlier version of this story, the names of the Kaleetan and Tillikum were mistakenly swapped, based on information from Washington State Ferries.
