Still a decent portable with the muting mod (described) | Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I know that the YP400PE is now long-in-the-tooth, but I was looking for something inexpensive (on Ebay) for camping trips or just general listening, and liked the size and specs and the reviews. I have a 150ft end-fed long-wire and am about 600ft up a cliff, so it hears almost everything that's out there :). As such, I can't say anything bad about the sensitivity. On the rather long telescopic antenna it doesn't do as well unless you have a very electrically-quiet environment (low, low RFI), such as in a camping setting, etc. Otherwise, an external antenna well away from the house by coax will work very well for you. There is a 3.5mm phone jack for such an antenna connection. The YB400PE is as good as any radio of that era (early 2000s), such as the (much-larger) DX-390/392, or Sony SW7600GR, etc. (all of which I've had at one time or another). I can't assess down to dB differences on sensitivity, as all three seem to work equally well, but there is definitely less image rejection capability on the YB400PE. But the selectivity for SSB for casual listening using the "narrow" setting works just fine, and is serviceable for CW. The fine-tuning control -- much maligned by some -- is actually quite effective and has a good range and reduces the need to tap the main tuning those +/- 1kHz all the time. The sound from the 1.5W 16ohm speaker is quite enjoyable, with a decent roundness to the audio (esp. compared to the Sony). The radio is continually tunable from 150kHz to 30MHz, with some gaps in the LW portion that don't bother me. And now -- Yes, the biggest complaint I've read about this radio is the "whooshy" step tuning. There is no "analog" tuning "dial" (other than the fine-tuning one) and so there is an annoying mute and corresponding "whoosh" sound as the mute kicks in and out. It's heard after every tuning step that you tap, and is especially annoying for the 1kHz step. Unlike the DX-390/392, I didn't find a ready-made mod on the internet to eliminate the muting function. But it is possible to do similarly as on the DX-390/392, and is extremely effective. I was able to do such a mod by downloading the Service Manual (which is readily available on the internet) and find the muting "connection" from the MCU to the audio board. Lo-and-behold, it's shown as clear as day on the schematic, and is actually easier to accomplish than cutting a trace on the PCB, which you have to do with the DX-390/392. On the YB400PE, the mute function connects via a wire from the main PCB to the display/audio PCB and is done by a white wire that goes between pin1 on connectors CN1 and CNW1. All you have to do is snip that white wire and the "whoosh"/mute effect goes away. The step tuning is then completely smoothing-sounding, with absolutely no pops or drop-outs between frequency steps. With that mod, my enjoyment of this radio increased exponentially. As such, if you are looking for a portable/battery-operated SW/SSB receiver of that early 2000s era and are willing to do this simple mod, then this radio is well recommended. |

VERY SMALL, BUT PACKED WITH LOTS OF FEATURES INCLUDING SSB!! | Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I took my YB400PE to the northern Yucatan when I stayed at a beach resort a few years ago. The radio is so small and light it's easy to pack. It came with a tiny covered spool of antenna wire that could be clipped to anything. At night the receiver picked up HF-SSB conversations from private yachts anchored around the Caribbean. Is this why they called it the 'Yacht Boy' radio? Then airline pilots reporting their positions at 38,000 feet to New York Radio also on HF-SSB. The receiver is dual conversion, LW, MW, SW and even FM stereo if you use stereo ear buds. A small wheel on the side works to further fine tune the PLL synthesized digital tuner. Without it you would never copy sideband signals. I used the handy internal light at night so I could see what I was doing. On a long night-time drive west from Cancun on the federal highway, I passed the time listening to a college baseball game on a small town Texas AM station by holding the radio up to the side window of the van. That signal skipped about 700 miles across the water. This is still the perfect radio for a traveller (it has a built in alarm clock) or for a child heading off to summer camp. It's a great little 'heavy-weight' of a shortwave radio. This model may be hard to find used but well worth the effort. By the way, the SSB signals were faint and noisy but I found them intelligible with ear buds. |

Time Owned: more than 12 months. I have had my Yachtboy 400 since 2003; bought refurbished from Universal Radio for $99.00. I have used this radio at home and camping, with internal and external antennas, on MW, FM and SW bands; this radio has been great. It performs well beyond the expectations of a $99.00 radio.
The Grundig YB 400 'Yacht Boy' and YB 400 PE Review By Tech833 Introduced nearly 10 years ago, the Grundig YB 400 hit the shortwave receiver market filling a niche that did not yet truly exist. For a long time, you had full coverage large receivers and you had small feature-poor portables.

The Yacht Boy 400 was launched at the end of 1993 in North America. In fact at £105 across Europe, the Yacht Boy 400 turns out to be a great value package. Our example is clearly made for Grundig in the Peoples' Republic of China. Grundig has designed the unit and supervised the quality control. The Yacht Boy 400 looks like many travel ...

Aug 29, 2004. #9. I don't think you can go wrong with the Yacht Boy 400PE. It's very sensitive, relatively immune to overloading, and it's a nice small package. It does a better job on most frequencies than my RS DX440, which is a pretty good radio but it's the size of a tank compared to my YB.
It's little portable that costs less than $200 and performs brilliantly in its intended use. I've owned my Grundig Yacht Boy 400 since 1996 and still use it frequently --mostly as a travelling companion. It's a darned good little radio. Its noise floor is low and selectivity and sensitivity amazingly high.
GRUNDIG YACHT BOY 210. 70's FINERY. Thought some visitors might like to see my olde-worlde radio from the 1970's. It's the beautiful (in my eyes) Grundig Yacht Boy 210. The Yacht Boy 500 appeared in most of the Grundig outlets in Europe in the course of October 1993. In North America the situation was different. Some of the US radio dealers we spoke initially disappointed that Grundig North America gave the exclusive distribution rights in the USA for the Yacht Boy 500 to a mail-order house called Willabee & Ward.
The Grundig Yacht Boy 360 is slightly larger than the SW40 at 178 by 120 by 40 mm and it is heavier, 598 grams including six penlight batteries that snap into the back. The radio comes complete with a simulated leather carrying case and a book about shortwave written by Deutsche Welle's engineering department.
