You could also try www.grove-ent.com . They also carry the Sangean 505p, a similar radio when compared to the Yacht Boy 400 PE.

I don't think you can go wrong with the Yacht Boy 400PE. It's very sensitive, relatively immune to overloading, and it's a nice small package. It does a better job on most frequencies than my RS DX440, which is a pretty good radio but it's the size of a tank compared to my YB. I've seen the YB on sale for as low as $149 and it's a steal at that price.

I have looked at other radios and I still like the yb400pe. Donald Harkins

I also have a YB 400 PE (have had it since last Christmas). It's a good radio with good sensitivity, and I think it was worth the money. I've lately been using it to monitor the Hurricane Watch Net (14325 kHz) for each hurricane that comes around. It performs decently on SSB but requires patience and practice using the fine tuning knob. It also has very good FM and commercial AM (mediumwave) reception. The internal AM antenna is nearly 6" long, and the telescoping FM/SW antenna is 36" long, plus you can use an external antenna (a ~20ft reel antenna is included). This is my second SW radio (my first was an analog tuning RS DX-397 that I bought a couple of years ago in college).

An amazing radio. I came across this page as I am playing with my faithful 210. I am forever in awe of this great radio that has a presence that no other has. I have all sorts of vintage radios, from Philips to Roberts, Hacker or Sonys, but this one has a special place, and I miss its sound and a build quality that is felt when you use it.

Hi there and thanks for the visit and nice comments. Yes, it's a lovely old radio and I enjoy it most every day. Regards, Tom, M7MCQ.

The 210 is awesome, isn't it? I've restored a couple and have one in our kitchen. It's used everyday and sounds just great! Like you, I remember relatives having one when I was a kid. Fond memories. https://www.flickr.com/gp/9927085@N03/i1215h

Looks nice that Tony! Thanks for the visit. 73, Tom, M7MCQ

Hi, Nelson here from Portugal. Really nice to find your blog, i have one of those beauties myself, and i love it, not only for the sound, the looks, but also for the nostalgia, it have been in my family since forever, and i have pictures listening to it as a baby :-) I proudly display ti in my living room. I was wondering about your echo connected to it, can you use this radio to play music from Alexa/Spotify? I would love to to so, to listen to my collection/playlists trough this little baby :-) Thanks a lot in advance and keep your good work Best regards

Nice this to read have the 210 today like new price 20Euro great sound have also all the Grundig Satellit s one by one Art thx anyway gl 73, de ON3MK Mor

Lovely to see all your appreciative comments on the 210. I too have one that I bought new in about 1972. Still works beautifully on a home made power supply of a similar date. Only problems have been a cracked volume knob, which I replaced from a scrap Ferguson TX9 TV, and the loss of the top extension of the aerial. It can still thump the floor so I assume all its electrolytic are in good order despite having a few periods of disuse. The major bus word has already been mentioned, and that is -------------------QUALITY! I even love just looking at it. I'm getting on a bit now so I suppose it's next event will be my kids or grandkids chucking it in the bin. UGGGGGH! Best wishes to all you lovers of truly good things. Peter.

grundig: Grundig Yacht-Boy 230: Design choices

Despite being an analog receiver design, the management is done by a Sanyo LC5850 -738 CMOS Single Chip 4-bit Micro-Computer with LCD Driver ( IC101 on the PCB), that also supports the Clock, Alarm,  Wolrd Map Time Zones, and Sleep functions.

The LC5850-738 receiver management functions are:

  • RF Band selection with the help of a  74HC154 4-16 line decoder ( IC5 ) whose output lines enables one of the 16 RF bands available in this radio model.
  • Power ON/OFF control. This receiver design do not offer regulated power supply to the Management Processor, therefore the CR2016 3V is the single power source for both Clock and Receiver functions.
  • Light control. Neither the Dial Scale nor the  LCD feature ilummination, although the offered Light function allows to clearly see the clock time area with a nice green color thanks to the included single green LED ( D101 ).
  • Show Tuning and Stereo indicators on the LCD, by reading these signals from the Toshiba TA8122AN AM/FM Tuner IC.

The RF front-end uses discrete active buffer/amplifier devices together with pairs of tuned circuits, one transformer for RF tuning and the other for local oscillator, resulting in the use of a large number of RF transformers and switching devices for RF band selection. This is a good design choice imho.

The filtered RF signal is passed to the Toshiba TA8122AN AM/FM Tuner IC ( IC1 ) that handles the RF amplification, local oscillators and mixers, as well as signal decoding with FM Stereo.

The dual channel audio signal is shaped for Tone Control, actively buffered and then passed to a Sanyo LC7534M Electronic Volume Control ( IC3 ). A Toshiba TA7376P dual channel Audio Power Amplifier ( IC2 ) will drive the stereo earphones while the internal 16 Ohm speaker appears to be connected in bridged mode.

The source of power supply (4.5VDC dry cells, or external adapter) is then used by:

  • The IC3 thrugh a transistor switch ( Q10 )
  • The LCD Clock zone green LED thrugh a transistor switch ( Q17 )
  • The Sanyo LA5003M 3V LDO power regulator ( IC4 ) thrugh a transistor switch ( Q19 ).
  • The transistor switches are controlled by IC101
  • A smart protection circuit, built around a PNP power transistor Q18  is inserted when using a external power adapter.
  • The regulated 3VDC from IC4 powers all the remaining devices, where some of them uses a 2.3VDC power source obtained by inserting a series diode ( D34 ) at the output of IC4.

Still a decent portable with the muting mod (described) Time Owned: 3 to 6 months.
I know that the YP400PE is now long-in-the-tooth, but I was looking for something inexpensive (on Ebay) for camping trips or just general listening, and liked the size and specs and the reviews. I have a 150ft end-fed long-wire and am about 600ft up a cliff, so it hears almost everything that's out there :). As such, I can't say anything bad about the sensitivity. On the rather long telescopic antenna it doesn't do as well unless you have a very electrically-quiet environment (low, low RFI), such as in a camping setting, etc. Otherwise, an external antenna well away from the house by coax will work very well for you. There is a 3.5mm phone jack for such an antenna connection.

The YB400PE is as good as any radio of that era (early 2000s), such as the (much-larger) DX-390/392, or Sony SW7600GR, etc. (all of which I've had at one time or another). I can't assess down to dB differences on sensitivity, as all three seem to work equally well, but there is definitely less image rejection capability on the YB400PE. But the selectivity for SSB for casual listening using the "narrow" setting works just fine, and is serviceable for CW. The fine-tuning control -- much maligned by some -- is actually quite effective and has a good range and reduces the need to tap the main tuning those +/- 1kHz all the time.

The sound from the 1.5W 16ohm speaker is quite enjoyable, with a decent roundness to the audio (esp. compared to the Sony). The radio is continually tunable from 150kHz to 30MHz, with some gaps in the LW portion that don't bother me.

And now -- Yes, the biggest complaint I've read about this radio is the "whooshy" step tuning. There is no "analog" tuning "dial" (other than the fine-tuning one) and so there is an annoying mute and corresponding "whoosh" sound as the mute kicks in and out. It's heard after every tuning step that you tap, and is especially annoying for the 1kHz step.

Unlike the DX-390/392, I didn't find a ready-made mod on the internet to eliminate the muting function. But it is possible to do similarly as on the DX-390/392, and is extremely effective.

I was able to do such a mod by downloading the Service Manual (which is readily available on the internet) and find the muting "connection" from the MCU to the audio board.

Lo-and-behold, it's shown as clear as day on the schematic, and is actually easier to accomplish than cutting a trace on the PCB, which you have to do with the DX-390/392. On the YB400PE, the mute function connects via a wire from the main PCB to the display/audio PCB and is done by a white wire that goes between pin1 on connectors CN1 and CNW1. All you have to do is snip that white wire and the "whoosh"/mute effect goes away.

The step tuning is then completely smoothing-sounding, with absolutely no pops or drop-outs between frequency steps.

With that mod, my enjoyment of this radio increased exponentially. As such, if you are looking for a portable/battery-operated SW/SSB receiver of that early 2000s era and are willing to do this simple mod, then this radio is well recommended.

VERY SMALL, BUT PACKED WITH LOTS OF FEATURES INCLUDING SSB!! Time Owned: more than 12 months.
I took my YB400PE to the northern Yucatan when I stayed at a beach resort a few years ago. The radio is so small and light it's easy to pack. It came with a tiny covered spool of antenna wire that could be clipped to anything. At night the receiver picked up HF-SSB conversations from private yachts anchored around the Caribbean. Is this why they called it the 'Yacht Boy' radio? Then airline pilots reporting their positions at 38,000 feet to New York Radio also on HF-SSB. The receiver is dual conversion, LW, MW, SW and even FM stereo if you use stereo ear buds. A small wheel on the side works to further fine tune the PLL synthesized digital tuner. Without it you would never copy sideband signals. I used the handy internal light at night so I could see what I was doing. On a long night-time drive west from Cancun on the federal highway, I passed the time listening to a college baseball game on a small town Texas AM station by holding the radio up to the side window of the van. That signal skipped about 700 miles across the water. This is still the perfect radio for a traveller (it has a built in alarm clock) or for a child heading off to summer camp. It's a great little 'heavy-weight' of a shortwave radio. This model may be hard to find used but well worth the effort. By the way, the SSB signals were faint and noisy but I found them intelligible with ear buds.
