Most people know two things about Tiger Woods' yacht: It's big, and it is named Privacy . As you would expect from someone who names his boat Privacy , Woods has never revealed much information about his yacht. But we can put together a profile of the yacht based on other sources of public information about it.

How Big Is Woods' Yacht?

There are some basics about the Woods' yacht that are known to be true. For example, it's 155 feet long. That's a big boat for an individual owner, but it's nowhere near the size of the biggest yachts on the seas (which top 500 feet in length), and it's not even the biggest yacht owned by a golfer: Greg Norman has a yacht that is nearly 230 feet in length.

But hey, give him a break: Woods purchased the boat in 2004. He can always get a new one if a 155-foot, 2004-vintage yacht starts to feel a little cramped in size.

How Much Woods' Boat Cost to Buy

Woods bought his yacht from Christensen Shipyards in Vancouver, Wash., for a reported $20 million. According to Power and Motor Yacht magazine, Tiger's yacht is a "155 Trideck Motor Yacht known as Hull 026."

(Ironically, the shipbuilders of Woods' Privacy allegedly violated the golfer's privacy, according to a subsequent lawsuit that Woods filed against Christensen. Woods claimed in his suit that the shipbuilders, contrary to agreement, used Woods' name and photos to promote their business. MSNBC.com reported in 2006 that the suit was settled in Woods' favor for $1.6 million.)

Woods took delivery of his yacht in time for his wedding to Elin Nordegren in 2004; the couple spent their wedding night aboard the Privacy . The Palm Beach Post has reported that it was Nordegren, prior to the wedding, who made most of the interior decorating choices for the boat.

Tiger's yacht is docked at a marina in North Palm Beach, Fla. (It is believed that Tiger Woods' house in Jupiter Island, Fla., has enough room on its Intracoastal Waterway frontage to berth Woods' yacht, although, as far as we know, Woods has never docked it there.)

Amenities, Crew and More Details About Woods' Yacht

Power and Motor Yacht magazine has reported that the Privacy has a 12,000-gallon fuel tank that will take the boat 4,000 miles, with a top speed of 17 knots.

The yacht is reported to have 6,500 square feet of living and work space and a capacity to sleep up to 21 people in a master suite and five guest rooms. It includes, according to various sources, a gym and theater, and carries multiple watercraft such as jet skis. It takes a crew of nine to operate.

People magazine has reported of Woods' yacht that it "offers all the comforts of home and then some: a 2,000-gallon water tank, five guestrooms, a Jacuzzi, a gym, an elevator, a sky-lounge bar, a walk-in refrigerator, a deck dining area that seats 12, and two built-in wall safes."

That's a nice boat!

Tiger's Other Boat: The Solitude

Woods also owns another boat, a 61-footer named Solitude . The Solitude is a dive boat: a boat scuba diving enthusiasts use to to get out to their diving destinations. It's not a yacht, in other words, but it's a good guess that as dive boats go the Solitude is a mighty fine one. It was custom built, according to People Magazine , for a cost of from $2 million to $3 million, by a company named Garlington Landeweer Marine. According to the magazine, the Solitude is docked at Pirate’s Cove Resort & Marina, about 10 minutes from Woods' estate in Jupiter Island, Fla.

Tiger Woods’ yacht: 11 numbers to know about Tiger’s insane $20 million yacht

Kevin Cunningham

You may have heard about Tiger Woods’ yacht before. In fact, if you live in Oyster Bay, Long Island, you might have seen its hulking frame sitting in a local marina recently . That’s because Woods sent it and its crew to New York two weeks before the 2019 PGA Championship to wait for his arrival.

If you’re one of the few golf fans who isn’t familiar with the finer points of Tiger’s yacht, here are 11 numbers to know about the massive boat, which Woods has dubbed “Privacy.”

TIGER WOODS’ YACHT BY THE NUMBERS

Did we mention that Tiger’s yacht is big? Well, it is. Really, really big . The boat stretches out to an insane 155 feet.

… as in floors. That’s right, Tiger’s yacht consists of three levels. Most of the action occurs on the main deck, but there’s a second level, too, and an observation deck on top.

Tiger Woods' yacht "Privacy" is already on Long Island two weeks before the PGA Championship.

… other times Woods has stayed on his yacht during majors. He’s stayed on it for this year’s PGA Championship , which is why it was docked on Long Island . But this isn’t the first time Tiger has slept on the water at a major. Tiger took Privacy to the 2006 U.S. Open at Winged Foot, as well as the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills last year.

A yacht like Tiger’s is going to cost you big-time. Woods reportedly paid around $20 million for Privacy when he purchased it in 2004. With an estimated net worth around $800 million, he can afford it.

Tiger’s yacht can hold up to a whopping 12,000 gallons of gas. That may sound like a lot, but that type of fuel is necessary to power the huge twin 1,800-horsepower engines on the craft.

Tiger Woods roasts John Daly at PGA Championship.

As noted before, Tiger sleeps on Privacy during majors on Long Island. But his isn’t the only bed on the boat. The vessel features five bedrooms that are capable of sleeping up to 10 people. That number, though, does not include the crew’s quarters…

It turns out it takes a lot of people to operate of yacht of this size. How many? Nine to be exact. That’s right, Tiger needs nine employees just for his boat. The crew members share four separate cabins while they’re aboard, bringing the total number of bedrooms to nine.

What’s a massive luxury yacht without some amenities to entertain the ritzy guests? Tiger’s yacht is full of them, including a jacuzzi on the deck that fits eight people, along with a bar to provide libations to any soakers who wish to imbibe. It also features a gym and a decompression chamber for scuba diving .

Tiger’s yacht has a total range of 4,000 nautical miles, which is more than enough for a round-trip from Tiger’s home in Jupiter Island, Fla., to Bethpage Black on Long Island.

Privacy is obviously not designed for racing, but it can still reach to some respectable speeds. The cruising speed for the yacht is 16 knots, and she tops out at 18 knots.

Given its size, Tiger’s yacht has plenty of room to fit a bunch of smaller crafts to help pass the time. Those include two motorized scooters, two ocean kayaks, and three jet skis.

So there you have it. Now you’ll have something to impress your friends with while watching Tiger vie for the title at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage Black. You can check out photos of Tiger’s yacht below.

Tiger Woods' $20M Yacht Named "Privacy" Is Chock-Full of Awesome Amenities

Back in 2004, 82-time PGA Tour event winner Tiger Woods decided to make a sizable purchase on a 155-foot yacht, which he named "Privacy." It cost him a cool $20 million, but he's certainly gotten his use out of it. Honestly, Tiger Woods has been one of the most successful golfers in the world, and with his net worth of $800 million today, it probably didn't hurt his wallet too much.

Most recently last year, he sent the massive superyacht to Oyster Bay in Long Island, New York, just two weeks before the 2019 PGA Championship, so that when it was over, he would have a luxurious ride back to his home in Jupiter Island, Florida.

Tiger Woods' yacht is pretty epic, as you might expect from the price tag, so let's check out some of the details about this spectacular vessel.

A Look at Tiger Woods' Yacht

View this post on Instagram A post shared by L World Yachting Group (@lworldyachting)

Let's start off by talking about the fact that this beauty has three floors with a three-person elevator to easily move you from the main deck to the observation deck. Because of its sheer size, it comes equipped with a pair of 1,800-horsepower engines and a huge tank capable of holding 12,000 gallons of fuel. Although they are thirsty, these engines can take the vessel to a top speed of 17 knots.

There are nine bedrooms total, however, four of them are used by the nine crew members that work onboard the luxury yacht. Of course, Woods' boat features tons of entertainment and amenities for the guests, including a bar, a VIP stateroom, a full gym with all the free weights you'll need, and even an eight-person jacuzzi. If you're looking for a real adventure, you'll even find a decompression chamber for scuba diving. Even with all this, there's still additional room to store all of Woods' toys like ocean kayaks, Sea-Doo jet skis, a dinghy, and some Vespa scooters. There's pretty much no cooler way to show up to a golf club or the U.S. Open than this thing.

If I were to guess, I'd assume Tiger spent a good amount of time on his yacht Privacy during this whole COVID-19 pandemic, since it really doesn't get more ideal than this. Woods has won four different PGA championships, and he's been proving his talent on the course for many years, so next time you're at a major golf event, just look for the 155-foot yacht, and you'll know the legend has arrived.

The Most Extravagant Features Of Tiger Woods' $20 Million Luxury Superyacht

tiger woods smiling

When you're a billionaire athlete like Tiger Woods, owning a fancy superyacht comes with the territory. The 15-time major winner is the owner of a 155-foot luxury yacht he bought in 2004. The yacht is aptly named "Privacy," and is reported to have an eye-watering $20 million  price tag.

Woods is known to stay on his yacht during various golf tournaments. In an interview, he told Business Insider that the yacht gave him a needed break from the tournament and helped to avoid traffic chaos when traveling to the competition. Over the years, the vessel has been frequently seen docked in New York whenever he competes at PGA championship events on Long Island , or in the Bahamas where he hosts his annual golf tournament , Hero World Challenge, on the capital island of New Providence. When he's not traveling, the vessel is usually found at his home base in Jupiter, Florida.

An inside look at Privacy

Privacy is a bit smaller compared to other superyachts owned by wealthy celebrities such as Steven Spielberg or business tycoons like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos (who allegedly is going to be the owner of the world's largest sailing yacht). Business Insider once reported that a journalist had teasingly asked Woods if he felt weird about his yacht not being the "biggest yacht in the yard." Woods cheekily responded: "I'm not opposed to that."

Nevertheless, it is still an impressive luxury yacht that features three decks and is powered by twin 1,800-horsepower engines. As expected, it comes with all the amenities that a boat of its caliber has. It comfortably fits 10 to 12 people plus nine crew members on board. Additionally, this high-class cruiser has cherry woodwork in its interior.

There is lots of entertainment for everyone on board as well. Reports say that the deck has a large jacuzzi that fits up to eight people, a VIP stateroom with two queen-size cabins and a twin cabin bar, a personal gym, and even an inflatable decompression chamber for scuba diving (via USA Today ). Besides that, it also comes with a garage to fit jet skis, motorized scooters, and kayaks to have some ocean fun for both Tiger Woods and his guests.

Does Tiger Woods need a bigger boat? His yacht Privacy is dwarfed by others in Bahamas

Tiger Woods traveled by yacht to the Hero World Challenge in the Bahamas this week.

Yes, that would be the $20 million luxury vessel dubbed Privacy.

Woods, who bought the boat in 2004, has taken it around the world, including the 2018 U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills in New York.

Now, it's parked in the Bahamas, which is not surprising.

What might be surprising is how this 6,500-square-foot craft is dwarfed by other boats in dock. The one on the far left is Tiger's.

The Golf Channel's Dan Hicks quipped that it "might be time for Tiger to trade that in" when comparing Privacy to other absurdly large and much more expensive watercraft.

Privacy sleeps between 10 and 12, has a crew of nine and reportedly costs $2 million a year to operate.

It includes:

  • Large deck bar
  • Eight-person Jacuzzi
  • Scuba-tank fill station
  • Inflatable decompression chamber
  • Cherry woodwork in the interior
  • VIP stateroom with two queen size cabin amidships and a twin cabin
  • Gym with a treadmill, exercise bike and free weights
  • Three-person elevator

Privacy has a 4,000-mile range thanks to a 12,000-gallon fuel tank, and can travel at a maximum speed of 17 knots.

Tiger Woods has been living life in his very own 'heaven-on-earth' yacht, named Privacy, during the U.S open. Docked near the Shinnecock Hills in New York, Woods chose the more convenient yet costly approach to steer clear of the horrendous traffic golfers encounter on their way to the game. Privacy has affluently given in Five staterooms for guests, four rooms for the crew, a gym, an eight-person hot tub, kayaks, scooters, and whatnot. This absurdly large and exotically expensive watercraft has been one of Tiger’s most significant investments . Besides traveling to the Bahamas for the Hero World Challenge, Tiger has taken this lump-some beauty in many different locations.

The Privacy yacht of Tiger Woods has a palatial prominence in the large luxury club of big boats. One must be aware of Privacy’s multifaceted facilities and amenities it tags along with for Woods and his ventures.

Privacy, as what Tiger titled the mega 55 million dollar custom-built watercraft he owns, was kept that name so he could keep his personal life relatively private. Emerging a website for the same, Tiger Woods and his alleged affairs and life have always been a private game for the world.

This 100-footer has been crafted and modeled after James Bond’s submarines and was made very clear about his prime-time derived inspiration. Woods’ Privacy yacht is no less than luxury on the water for a capacity of more than one person’s needs with its crew pack of nine members, a three-person-elevator, and an eight-person jacuzzi fitting. The yacht inhibits a travel speed of approximately 17 knots, making the watercraft an excellent choice of Woods, eschewing away the road traffic.

This commodious 47-meter creation also covers a large bar, a station to fill scuba tanks, and an inflatable decompression chamber, making it plush and posh for the up-market. The cherry woodwork has beautifully encompassed the interiors of this big boat with a VIP stateroom aft and two queen-size cabins amidship and a twin cabin, making ample room for Woods and his frequent tour buddies, as rightly mentioned in USA today .

The workout room has been converted into the fitness space from the lush cabin it originally was crafted as. Tiger’s workout necessitates a treadmill, exercise bike, and free weights being ornately equipped in the arena. The transparent stairs and a cherry handrail add the oomph to the yacht from an aesthetic point of view.

Tiger’s open floor plan entails a main living area with only a single divider between the saloon and the dining room. The functionalities cost up to 2 million dollars a year to operate smoothly. Tiger, the highest-paid athlete's yacht, is a trifold fiberglass motor yacht with a numbing 9-meter beam up in the roar. The motor force on the yacht derives from a pair of 1,800 hp MTU/Detroit Diesel motors, while two 99 kilowatt Northern Lights generators providing electrical power are the substantial swanking components.

Tiger Woods’ yacht can carry three SeaDoos, two ocean kayaks, and two Vespa scooters, and that’s not all it. This massive boat can hold up to a whopping 12,000 gallons of gas. Powered by twin 1800-horsepower, the type of fuel aggravates the support the best of this booming boat craft, as stated in the Yacht Harbour .

The golf player surely doesn’t face costing issues for his water mansion. Privacy costs around 2,40,000 dollars per week which count up to 1.6 million dollars gushing in water, technically per year. Wood’s numbers plummet quite a bit if the boat's utility has extended periods.

Tiger’s net worth pulls all strings to maintain such a luxury lifestyle with the Privacy boat, as he’s made more than 100 million dollars single-handedly during his career. Residing his heart near the boundless beauty, Antigua - right on a beach with his own beautiful home, thus privacy is safe, secured, and un-stowed when he’s not using it.

The 14-time major champion in golf with a net worth of approximately $700 million has a stunner crew for this super-boat. The ship’s operating budget floats around for the yacht maintenance and crew member salaries - two-thirds of operating expenses, excluding the benefits. The shining nine members help the boat afloat and manage the supplies, food, and other miscellaneous costs such as paying off fines imparted on by authorities - which also takes away one-third of the cost as revealed in Wheels inquirer .

Being an ultimate lump of luxury on the water, Privacy has not failed to shock and surprise us with the available amenities and provisions for Tiger and his ventures.

Tiger Woods goes full Bond-villain, pulls up to U.S. Open in $20 million yacht

Tiger Woods Boat Docked In Palm Beach County

Carlos Marino

At this point you'd think Tiger Woods would be tired of power moves, maybe even a little bored, considering he spent nearly 20 years flexing on his peers Thursday-Sunday, February-October. The 2018 Tiger is a new Tiger, too—a kinder, softer, gentler apex predator with some real, capital-P Perspective. But it's U.S. Open week—the 10th since his dazzling, peg-legged battle with professional belt-buckle collector Rocco Mediate at Torrey Pines—and if you thought Tiger was just gonna roll up to Shinnie in the ol' Buick and get to work, you were wrong. Very, very wrong.

Instead, Tiger has announced his presence at this year's U.S. Open with all the subtlety of Ernst Stavro Blofeld , docking his $20-million-dollar, 155-foot yacht off the tip of Montauk on Tuesday. The fittingly titled "Privacy" will reportedly serve as Tiger's base of operations as he hosts a high stakes poker game for the world's most powerful criminals vies for his first major victory since that fateful afternoon back in 2008.

According to Page Six , the 17-person escape pod—which has been graced by the likes of Bill Gates, Oprah, and MJ—is berthed at Gurney’s Montauk Yacht Club, about an hour east of Shinnecock Hills Golf Club. With a theater, gym, and Jacuzzi on board, Tiger should have plenty to keep him occupied outside of, you know, trying to win the most difficult golf tournament on earth, though those plans could easily go up in smoke if Mr. Bond somehow escapes the shark tank again.

Tiger Woods Yacht: Everything You Want To Know

Ian Fortey

Tiger Woods is one of only three professional athletes in the world who has achieved billionaire status alongside LeBron James and Michael Jordan. As you can imagine, with that kind of cash comes the ability to buy a very nice boat and in 2004 he shelled out for an impressive toy. He purchased the yacht with his ex-wife just before their 2004 wedding and they apparently spent their wedding night on board, so it was something of a wedding gift to themselves.

What’s the Name of Tiger Woods’ Yacht?

how much is tiger woods yacht

Woods chose to name his yacht Privacy, and you may know the story behind that one to a greater or lesser degree. When the yacht was commissioned back in 2004, Woods actually ended up suing the yacht maker Christensen. The company, at the time a fairly well known and reliable shipyard, had been using Wood’s name and images of the yacht and Woods himself in their promotional materials. So, basically, trying to get business off of his name and the work they did for him.

Woods sued the company and by 2006 the case was settled out of court. The yacht makers had nothing to say on the record regarding the case, the yacht or Woods after that.

In addition to this scandal, Woods has been constantly in the eye of the media and the paparazzi for most of his career, including some well known scandals that happened even after he bought the yacht, so the Privacy name was well chosen.

How Big is Tiger Woods Yacht?

how much is tiger woods yacht

Tiger Woods’ yacht is a respectable 155 feet in length with a 29.5 foot beam. It features three decks and while it’s nowhere near one of the largest yachts in the world , it’s actually one of the biggest celebrity-owned yachts on the water. Most of the larger vessels out there are owned by industrialists, royalty and other titans in the business world.

How Fast is Tiger Woods Yacht?

Word is that Privacy has a cruising speed of about 16 knots with a top speed of 18 knots. Not a speed demon by any means, but no one buys a 155-foot long yacht for racing. It’s powered by two 1,800-horsepower MTU engines and features a 12,000 gallon fuel tank. The yacht has a range of 4,000 nautical miles.

How Much Did Tiger Woods’ Yacht Cost?

In 2004, Woods is said to have dropped about $20 million on his super yacht. Again, not nearly the most expensive yacht in the world but clearly quite an expensive vessel in its own right. Because it’s such a large vessel it requires a crew of 9 to keep it operating. That, along with the fuel costs for that big 12,000 gallon tank and various other costs of operation means it costs Woods an additional $2 million or so per year to keep the boat running.

What’s the Interior of Tiger Woods Yacht Like?

With a name like Privacy it’s no surprise that there aren’t a ton of details about Woods’ yacht but, that said, it’s been nearly 20 years so it’s been around long enough that we do know a good deal of what’s going on inside the ship. He once gave the Golf Channel a tour and they were able to snap some still images that give an idea of what it’s like inside which you can check out in the video above.

The boat was designed to accommodate up to 10 guests in 5 staterooms. There’s an additional four cabins that can handle the crew members. The VIP stateroom is aft and there are two queen size cabin amidships as well as a twin cabin. All told there’s said to be about 6,500 square feet of living space on board. The upper deck of the vessel is also an observation deck for those looking to just relax and enjoy the view.

how much is tiger woods yacht

Woods has been known to live on the yacht when he’s golfing, rather than staying at hotels like some other golfers. He first lived on board during the 2006 US Open at Winged Foot Golf Club. Later, he was aboard Privacy during the 2018 US Open at Shinnecock Hills Golf Club on Long Island in New York, and then again during the 2019 PGA Championship.

how much is tiger woods yacht

There’s a gym as you’d probably expect for the yacht of an athlete. It’s said to house a treadmill, exercise bike, and free weights. There’s also a jacuzzi tub big enough for eight people at a time. In addition, there’s a movie theater on board as well as a well-stocked bar.

The dining area is large and opulent, as you’d expect, and there is room for 12 guests to enjoy a meal. With so many people eating you’d need a well-stocked kitchen and it seems like the yacht has a walk-in fridge in the galley so there’s little worry about not having enough on board to keep everyone fed.

how much is tiger woods yacht

When it comes to having fun, the yacht has a few water toys available for Woods and his guests. There are three jet skis on board as well as a pair of ocean kayaks. When you reach land there are even two Vespa scooters you can take out. There’s also scuba gear and apparently an entire decompression chamber. You can also fill up the air tanks on board as well.

As for the finer details, that stuff is still kind of up in the air as Woods has not let many people on board to photograph anything in the years he’s owned the vessel. Some of those who have been aboard describe the interior as being pretty classical as far as yachts go. Features are done in cherry woodwork and there’s supposed to be a staircase connecting the three decks with transparent steps and a cherry handrail. Of course, if you’re not inclined to be doing any stair climbing on a yacht, there’s an elevator on board as well.

how much is tiger woods yacht

The main floor is designed with an open concept to take advantage of the flow of the whole vessel and, of course, ensure that passengers get to enjoy the most of not just the features but the views while they’re out on the water.

Alongside that 12,000 gallon fuel tank, there’s a 2,000 gallon water tank to keep freshwater on board for crew and passengers. Two 99-kilowatt Northern Lights generators provide electrical power to keep the lights on for everyone.

Details on any security features are definitely scant, but it’s been said there are at least two safes on board for passengers to store valuables if need be.

What is the Solitude?

You may have heard that Woods has a boat named Solitude as opposed to Privacy. Well, as far as we can tell, he owns both. Solitude was purchased back in 2010 and the rumored price was $3 million. Solitude was bought as a dive boat as opposed to a luxury yacht that Woods planned to be living on while he’s golfing in coastal cities.

As we mentioned above, the Privacy has a decompression chamber, scuba gear and more scuba-related amenities. Woods is an avid scuba diver as was his ex-wife. He even learned free-diving and spearfishing. The dive boat seems to have been purchased to more specifically focus on the hobby for his ex, with whom he is still friends.

The Bottom Line

Tiger Woods’ yacht called Privacy cost him around $20 million back in 2004. It’s a 155-foot vessel with room for 10 passengers and 9 crew including an interior VIP stateroom. It features a good deal of fun water toys like Sea Doos, two ocean kayaks, and scuba gear for the scuba diving fans, as well as a full twin cabin gym, a jacuzzi, a sweeping staircase, and more. Woods still makes frequent use of the yacht and even lives on board when he’s working various golf tours and opens.

Tiger Woods just confirmed he's avoiding US Open traffic by staying on his $20 million, 155-foot yacht — and he called it a 'dinghy'

  • Tiger Woods confirmed to the media on Tuesday that he is indeed staying on his huge yacht during the US Open, one of golf's biggest competitions.
  • Woods even called his $20 million, 155-foot yacht a "dinghy."
  • You can check out the yacht — as well as a photo of Woods in its actual dinghy — below.
  • The US Open begins Thursday.

Tiger Woods just confirmed to the media that he is indeed staying aboard his $20 million, 155-foot yacht during the US Open — and he even called it his "dinghy."

Page Six was first to report on the rumor that Woods had berthed his yacht, called Privacy, in the Hamptons last week.

The yacht is now in Sag Harbor, a 30-minute drive from Shinnecock Hills Golf Club, the site of this year's US Open, one of the biggest competitions in golf. It begins on Thursday.

Woods said that staying aboard the yacht is a huge plus because it provides the perfect respite from the "tournament scene" and reduces traffic chaos en route to the competition.

"Sag Harbor is a cute little town," he told journalists at a pre-tournament USGA event on Tuesday. "I've only been there for a few days now. I haven't really got a chance to walk about a little bit, but I certainly will this week. So far it's been nice to kind of get away from the tournament scene and go there to my dinghy there and just really enjoy it."

Check out the yacht:

Here's Woods in the yacht's actual dinghy:

One journalist jokingly asked Woods whether he felt weird that Privacy was not even the "biggest yacht in the yard." Woods laughed and said, "I'm not opposed to that."

Woods bought Privacy in 2004. It has a top speed of 17 knots, is big enough to sleep 17 people, and has a theater, a gym, and a Jacuzzi.

What Tiger Woods purchased Solitude?

According to sources, the marriage between Woods and Elin Nordegren was struggling to survive in 2010. However, after facing difficulties in his married life, the golfer was looking forward to something in February 2010. It was a new dive boat specially designed to cater to the needs of Woods’ wife, Elin. The golfer named the ship ‘Solitude’. A source told ‘People,’  “Solitude is a dive boat designed for Elin, who loves the sport.”

Fans might not be aware, but the golfer is known for his diving skills and often indulged in diving with his ex-wife, Elin. Another unknown fact about the pro is that he is interested in spearfishing. The PGA member learned free-diving to pursue his passion for spearfishing without an air tank.

Do the former couple talk to each other?

Tiger Woods and his ex-wife Elin Nordegren are now friends , as reported by ‘People’ in 2018. According to sources, the former couple is now closer than they ever were during their marriage. Their friendship is on good terms, mainly because they never wanted their kids, Charlie and Sam, to face any issues due to their split. Therefore, they decided to be friends and are going strong, sharing custody of their kids.

2025 Ryder Cup: Tiger Woods explains why he turned down U.S. captaincy for Bethpage Black

Woods was the presumptive choice to captain the united states but simply had too much on his plate.

tiger-woods-presser-2024-open-g.jpg

Tiger Woods was the presumptive favorite to captain the red, white and blue into the 2025 Ryder Cup at Bethpage Black next fall. Considered the obvious next-in-line choice to spearhead the Americans' efforts with the event returning to the United States, Woods' work away from the golf course has proven to be too much for the 48-year-old to give his undivided attention to the team.

"The decision was very difficult for me to make," Woods said. "My time has been so loaded with the [PGA] Tour and everything and what we're trying to accomplish. I'm on so many different subcommittees that it just takes so much time in the day, and I'm always on calls.

"I felt -- I told Seth [Waugh, PGA of America president] that I just didn't feel like I could do the job properly. I couldn't devote the time. I barely had enough time to do what I'm doing right now, and add in the TGL starts next year as well as the Ryder Cup. You add all that together, and then with our negotiations with the PIF, all that concurrently going on at exactly the same time, there's only so many hours in the day.

"I just didn't feel like I would be doing the captaincy or the players in Team USA justice if I was the captain with everything that I have to do."

Instead of Woods, it will be Keegan Bradley serving as the U.S. Ryder Cup captain. Bradley was surprising selection given his lack of leadership experience and his current playing prowess; the 38-year-old currently ranks No. 19 in the Official World Golf Rankings.

"With Keegan, I think Keegan is going to be a great leader. He's very passionate about what he does. He's very passionate about the event," Tiger said. "This is going to be probably a turnover year for us for the captaincies, whether it's the captain itself and his vice captains. This is the natural progression, one we've been looking forward to."

Given Bradley's youth and the gravity of the role he has now taken, he is expected to lean on the experience of those around him.

During his introductory press conference, he expressed interest in serving as a playing captain -- should he qualify for the team on his own volition. Bradley also mentioned the possibility of adding more automatic qualifying spots and an influx of younger vice captains. However, he made it clear that Woods could hold any and as much of a role as the 15-time major champion desired.

Asked whether Bradley has made such overtures at this juncture, Woods replied Tuesday: "He hasn't asked me."

Whether Tiger is ultimately part of the U.S. team at Bethpage Black will be revealed in due time; the competition is still 14 months away.

What is known is that Woods, one day, will eventually serve as captain for the United States. When he does, he will be sure to give it everything he's got.

"As I said, I'll put my hat in the ring again when I have more time and I feel like I can devote myself to a Ryder Cup," Woods said. "As of right now, I've got so many different things I'm juggling and trying to get right at the same time for all the players that are a part of the PGA Tour. It's one of those things where you just can't get it wrong."

Outside projected cut line into Friday at Royal Troon

Change Text Size

Tiger Woods showed glimpes of promise Thursday at The 152nd Open Championship, but he failed to maintain a rhythm in any facet. The result was a frustrating 8-over 79 at Royal Troon, well outside the projected cut line into Friday's second round on the Scottish coast.

"I didn't do a lot of things right today," Woods said afterward. "I didn't hit my irons very close, and I didn't give myself a whole lot of looks today. I need to shoot something in the mid-60s tomorrow to get something going on the weekend."

Woods, 48, began Thursday's opening round with a flourish, making two straight pars followed by a birdie from just off the green at the par-4 third, punctuated with a subtle yet hearty fist pump. He was in red numbers on a breezy Thursday and poised for an ascent toward the top of the leaderboard. Or so it seemed. The three-time Open champion played his next five holes in 5 over, including a double bogey at the par-3 fifth that included a pitch-out sideways from a pot bunker, and he turned in 4-over 40. His back nine featured just one more birdie (the par-4 13th), which came after a double bogey-bogey stretch on Nos. 11 and 12. Woods closed with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 17 and 18 for an 8-over 79, playing alongside Xander Schauffele (69) and Patrick Cantlay (73) at Royal Troon.

Shane Lowry opened in 5-under 66 on Thursday afternoon, putting Woods a distant 13 strokes off the lead. Woods ranked slightly above field average Thursday off the tee and around the green, but he lost more than two strokes to the field in both approach play and putting, ranking near the bottom of the field in both categories.

This marks the first year in which Woods has competed in all four majors since suffering severe injuries to both legs in a 2021 car crash. He made the cut at the Masters, finishing 60th, but missed the cut at the PGA Championship at Valhalla and U.S. Open at Pinehurst No. 2. The 15-time major champion will likely need something in the 60s on Friday to earn weekend tee times in his 95th career major-championship appearance.

Woods admits that his physical condition isn't what it once was, but he strongly believes that he can still contend for major titles under the right conditions. After an uneven Thursday at Royal Troon, contention will likely have to wait another year. He'll look to ascend inside the cut line Friday on the Scottish coast, where he played his first Open as a pro in 1997 (finishing T24) and also competed in 2004 (finishing T9). The top 70 and ties will make the 36-hole cut at The Open.

"I'm physically feeling a lot better than I did at the beginning of the year," Woods said. "At the end of last year, it was tough, and I haven't played a whole lot. I think that, as the year has gone on, I have gotten better. I just wish I could have played a little bit more, but I've been saving it for the majors just in case I do something pretty major and then take myself out of it. Hopefully next year will be a little bit better than this year."

Read below for updates on how Woods' opening round unfolded at The 152nd Open Championship.

2:50 p.m. ET: Woods' finish is the epitome of his day. After a well-placed drive down the middle at the par-4 18th, his 172-yard approach releases just over the back of the green, leaving a slippery 35-footer from the back fringe. His birdie attempt slides past to leave a 6-footer for par, which he misses on the right side, a theme of the day. Woods taps in for bogey and a disheartening round of 8-over 79. He'll need something special Friday morning in order to play the weekend at Royal Troon.

2:30 p.m. ET: It's more misfortune for Woods at the long par-3 17th hole, as his tee shot releases down the green's left side and funnels off into the second cut of rough. He's unable to do much with his pitch shot, as the ball checks up 37 feet short of the hole, and his par putt rolls on a good line but has too much pace; it hits the hole, pops up and races 6 feet past. Woods composes himself to convert the bogey putt, but he falls to 7 over for the day with one hole remaining.

2:20 p.m. ET: It's an adventurous par-5 16th hole for Woods, but he comes away with a scrambling par.

Woods flushes his tee shot down the middle, leaving a 277-yard second shot where he can give the green a go, but he pushes it well right to leave a gnarly third shot from thick rough. He can't advance it to the green, and the ball kicks into a pot bunker. The 82-time TOUR winner, though, displays his generational short-game prowess with a smooth up-and-down, as he blasts to 4 feet and converts for par. He remains 6 over for the day with two holes to play.

1:55 p.m. ET: Woods is precise with a tee shot down the middle at the par-4 15th, and he plays a safe 157-yard approach to the green's left side, leaving a 28-foot birdie try. His birdie putt moves across the hole and misses on the left side; he cleans up his par from 4 feet past. Woods remains 6 over through 15 holes Thursday at Royal Troon.

1:40 p.m. ET: His playing partners Xander Schauffele and Patrick Cantlay miss the green at the long par-3 14th and make bogey, while Woods plays a proper iron to the green's right side and two-putts for par from 34 feet. Woods remains at 6 over with four holes to play in the opening round. Several variables will change regarding Friday's eventual cut line (top 70 and ties), but Data Golf currently projects 5 over as the likeliest cut line (35.5%), with 6 over the next likeliest (31.6%).

1:24 p.m. ET: Woods has a bright moment at the par-4 13th, as he smokes a drive 330 yards down the fairway's left side to leave an inviting approach from 133 yards. He takes advantage with a crisp short iron to 7 feet, and he converts the birdie putt for his second circle of the day. He returns to 6 over through 13 holes, with visions of more birdies down the stretch to claw back a bit.

1:10 p.m. ET: Woods is properly positioned off the tee at the par-4 12th, but he tugs his second shot into dense rough left of the green. His pitch shot settles 24 feet short of the hole, and his par putt is on line but lips out hard on the left side. He makes bogey, falling to 7 over through 12 holes. The 15-time major winner drifts further from the projected cut line and might need to scrap just to break 80 on this Thursday.

12:55 p.m. ET: After a lengthy wait at the nasty par-4 11th, known for the railway line that parallels the hole, Woods pushes his shot into a thick bush right of the fairway, requiring him to take an unplayable lie. He drops and plays his third shot to 37 yards short of the hole, in the fairway, but he can't get up-and-down as he misses a 12-foot bogey try on the right side. Pushed putts are becoming a troubling theme for Woods on this Thursday, and the ball striking hasn't been strong enough to compensate. He falls to 6 over through 11 holes.

It's a tough day for all at Royal Troon, but Woods' showing so far is less than desirable.

12:20 p.m. ET: Woods makes an easy par at the par-4 10th, smoking a drive to nearly the end of the fairway and playing a safe 133-yard approach to 25 feet. His birdie attempt tracks toward the hole but stops just a few rotations short of the cup. He taps in for par, a satisfactory start to his second nine. He remains 4 over for the day.

12:05 p.m. ET: Woods stops the bleeding at the mid-length par-4 ninth, playing a safe approach to just short of the green and getting up-and-down from 24 yards by converting a 4-footer for par.

It's a 4-over 40 for Woods on the opening nine at Royal Troon, not an ideal result after a promising start at 1 under through three. He turns to the second nine at Royal Troon's out-and-back design, looking to crawl a bit closer to level par and to clubhouse leader Justin Thomas (3-under 68).

11:48 a.m. ET: Woods' front nine is slowly descending from bad to worse, as his tee shot at the famed "Postage Stamp" short par-3 eighth careens off a slope just off the green's right side and kicks into thick rough. He has no choice but to play his second shot well right of the hole to avoid pot bunkers; it funnels off a slope to leave a closer par putt from 14 feet, but it misses on the right side. Woods is now 4 over through eight holes at Royal Troon, a distant seven strokes back of leader Justin Thomas. It's way too early to think about the cut line, but Woods is not trending in the correct direction at the moment.

11:35 a.m. ET: Things are getting bleak fast for Woods, who has a reasonable 15-foot birdie try from just off the par-4 seventh green's left side but races it 6 feet by. He can't convert the par putt; it's another bogey for the three-time Open champion. He's now 3 over for the day, and he has played his last four holes in 4 over. It's a summer day on the Scottish coast, but it could easily be confused for a rainy fall afternoon, and Woods' score is aligned with that gloomy vibe.

11:20 a.m. ET: Woods gets back on track at the par-5 sixth, playing three smart shots to leave a mid-range birdie try. He can't convert but makes a routine par to stay at 2 over for the day.

10:55 a.m. ET: Woods slightly tugs a long iron at the long par-3 fifth, but it catches a nasty pot bunker that requires him to chip out sideways. His third shot is no picnic either, requiring a flop shot back over the bunker that he does well to stop 10 feet past the hole. The bogey putt narrowly misses on the right edge, and it's a discouraging double bogey for Woods. He falls to 2 over through five holes. A promising start has turned sour in the blink of an eye.

10:43 a.m. ET: Woods' first miscue of the day comes at the par-5 fourth hole, and it comes despite a well-placed driver down the middle and a proper layup to leave a 125-yard approach for his third. He tugs that approach to the green's left side, leaving a cross-country 62-footer for birdie which he races 8 feet by. His par putt burns the edge, and it's a bogey on Royal Troon's second easiest hole of the day, a frustrating square on the scorecard. Woods is back to even par through four holes.

10:21 a.m. ET: Woods is a tactician, splitting the fairway on the short par-4 third hole with a fairway metal, leaving 149 yards to the hole. He plays an aggressive second shot toward the middle-left hole location, but it settles in the fairway just beyond the green, leaving a 35-foot birdie effort.

It's vintage Woods from there, as he delivers an early highlight-reel moment at Royal Troon. He selects putter from the fringe and starts the ball well right of the hole; it breaks perfectly down the slope and drops into the cup. Birdie for Woods, who delivers a subtle yet hearty fist pump. He's in red figures, 1 under through three holes. Game on.

Tiger Woods drains long birdie putt from off the green at The Open

10:10 a.m. ET: Woods tugs his tee shot into thick rough left of the fairway at the short par-4 second, but he plays a sublime second shot from 177 yards that narrowly carries a front greenside bunker and safely settles 60 feet left of the hole. He two-putts for his second straight par to begin the opening round at Royal Troon.

Tiger Woods opens with par at The Open

9:51 a.m. ET: Tiger Woods is underway at The 152nd Open, sporting a black cap, grey sweater and black neck warmer in his Sun Day Red branding. He selects fairway metal off the tee at the par-4 first and finds the first cut of rough just off the fairway's right side, leaving 166 yards to the hole. He plays a smart iron to the green's front portion and two-putts for par, a fine start to this tricky Thursday at Royal Troon.

Long Holes Look Intimidating, but It’s the Short Ones That Often Befuddle Golfers

At the British Open at Royal Troon, a short hole called the Postage Stamp has ended many title runs.

Justin Thomas prepare to putt with Tiger Woods and another man standing behind him.

By Paul Sullivan

The British Open at Royal Troon in Scotland this week might help answer a question vexing professional golf. Is the antidote to golfers hitting increasingly long drives creating holes that are even longer? Or is it the opposite: incredible shortness?

Troon, which is hosting its 10th Open this week, is famous for the Postage Stamp , the name given to its par-3 eighth hole, which is 123 yards on the card but may play under 100 yards this week if the tees are moved up and the pin is put in the front of the green. A tiny green surrounded by five bunkers, the hole has been a feature of the course since 1909.

It’s also a hole length that any golfer can hit. But under pressure, with the wind blowing and a tricky pin position, it’s a length that tests the skill of the most elite golfers.

This year, Troon will also have its opposite. It will have the longest hole in Open history , the par-5 sixth hole that will measure 623 yards. It beats by three yards the 15th hole at Royal Liverpool in last year’s Open.

In some ways, lengthening holes for top pros is akin to billionaires competing to have the longest yacht: It doesn’t really matter at the end of the day. Pros hit the ball so far that length alone doesn’t deter them.

What does is the strategy inherent in the design of the hole. This is where these two opposites at Troon open up a robust debate among top architects as to which matters more today: extreme length or extreme shortness?

“Short holes just fascinate me,” said Ben Crenshaw , a two-time major champion turned golf course architect with his partner Bill Coore. “Some of the great short holes in the world provide a test of accuracy and bravery in a way that a lot of other holes don’t. The Postage Stamp at Troon has been the scene of a lot of carnage and bravery.”

“The long holes are always a test over there because of the conditions,” Crenshaw added. “You only hope that you don’t reach a long hole that’s into the wind. Then it becomes a very difficult proposition. It’s a test that you will see over there.”

There was a time not so long ago when some par-5s were considered unreachable in two shots. (Hitting a par-5 in two, instead of three, is an advantage for players looking to make up ground on the rest of the field, with a birdie or maybe an eagle.)

In 1991, John Daly captivated the golfing world with how far he hit the ball in winning the P.G.A. Championship as a rookie. Two years later, when the U.S. Open was played at Baltusrol Golf Club’s Lower Course, Daly electrified the crowd when he reached the 630-yard 17th in two shots, then the only person to have done that in a tournament.

Some clubs have gone to extreme lengths to protect their holes. The 12th hole at Oakmont Country Club is one. Oakmont, which has hosted nine United States Opens and three P.G.A. Championships, is considered among the toughest golf courses in the United States. And the par-5 12th, always over 600 yards, was considered unreachable in two shots — until it wasn’t. So the last time the club hosted the U.S. Open in 2016, that hole was stretched to 684 yards, making it the longest U.S. Open hole ever.

Not everyone is a fan of that strategy.

“It’s almost impossible now to build a hole that’s unreachable in two, short of making it 700 yards, and I wouldn’t want to do that anyway,” said Tom Doak, who designed the Renaissance Club where the Scottish Open was played last week. “It’s better when the long hitter thinks he can get there, so he will risk getting in trouble to do it.”

Michael Hurdzan, a designer of Erin Hills, the longest course to ever host a U.S. Open at 7,845 yards, said being uncertain or uncomfortable is a better way to challenge elite players.

“If one were silly enough to play the maximum yardage on every hole, Erin Hills would total over 8,500 yards,” he said. “Legend has it that Patrick Reed did that on a practice day and shot 73. Length is not a strong deterrent to scoring among the elite players of today, but making them think is, and that is what a short hole can do.”

The ninth at Erin Hills is just 135 yards with bunkers surrounding it; it made many players at the 2017 U.S. Open unsure.

“The thing about Troon that I love is the capriciousness of the fairways,” Hurdzan said. “That ball can land and scoot one way or the other. They’re trying to hit it hard but now they have to hit it hard and true.”

While holes that are too long can open up a player to shooting many shots over par, they can also have the opposite effect in: removing the temptation to make a heroic shot.

So what needs to be done to keep these championship courses challenging?

Doak had several suggestions. One was a tee-shot hazard so challenging — say a deep, high-walled bunker — that it almost certainly costs players a stroke. Another is to penalize pros with a shot even they don’t like.

“My preference is to have the green bunkered more loosely on a par-5, so the player trying to hit driver off the deck might leave himself a 40-yard bunker shot,” he said. “Even pros hate those. That same bunker shouldn’t bother the guy playing three careful shots.”

A common feature is to put water near the green to claim any errant shots, but Hurdzan criticized that idea as uncreative.

“You want to reduce the margin of error as much as you can at the green, and you can do it with slopes,” he said. “We saw it at Pinehurst for the U.S. Open with all those roll offs. We’re going to see some of that at Troon because those greens have a lot of roll off. You want to design the Saturday and Sunday pin placements with small margins for error.”

Crenshaw, who restored Pinehurst No. 2 in 2011, said those sloping greens were what Donald Ross, the original designer who came from the links of Dornoch in Scotland, intended for championship golf even 100 years ago.

“Those greens defend it so well in so many different ways,” Crenshaw said. “An honest shot has to pull into that green with the proper strength. There are so many [curved] false fronts, if you don’t get the ball up into the green it will roll back on you. You have to play a conservative shot and not go for as many flagsticks. And when you do miss the greens, you’re faced with many delicate shots.”

This is where Crenshaw, a two-time winner of the Masters Tournament, said short befuddled great players more than long.

“Think of the 12th hole at Augusta.,” he said. “That will test you no matter what. It’s the shortest hole on that golf course. And it gets all the attention.”

Of course, at a championship venue like Troon, sometimes both short and long, can be problematic.

In 1982, Bobby Clampett playing in his first Open Championship at age 22 led by five after two rounds. He was off to a solid start with a few more birdies in the third round.

Then at the sixth, the longest hole back then at 577 yards, he carded a triple-bogey 8 that sent him reeling.

In 1997, Tiger Woods, who had turned professional the year before, was in contention at Troon until he took a 6 on the par-3 Postage Stamp hole. “That eighth hole at Troon tests you in all conditions,” Crenshaw said, “because the target is so small.”

And that may make it the better defense to today’s length debate.
