The Incredible Features Of Steven Spielberg's $160 Million Superyacht

In 2021, the Seven Seas, the luxury yacht belonging to billionaire movie director Steven Spielberg, was sold to billionaire steel magnate Barry Zekelman after being listed for almost $158 million earlier in the year (via Bloomberg ).

Spielberg first commissioned the 282-foot yacht in 2010. The superyacht was designed by Oceanco, a luxury shipbuilding company from the Netherlands. If the name sounds familiar, this company has also recently built a superyacht for Amazon founder  Jeff Bezos . The Seven Seas was custom-made for the award-winning film director and has lots of amenities and high-end features. It's a powerful ship that can hit a top speed of 20 knots and a cruising speed of 15 knots. The yacht also has two MTU engines, which provide a walloping 4,680 horsepower each, according to Robb Report .

In the past, this yacht has been sailing all over and has been seen cruising off the coast of France during the Cannes Film Festival, and in the Caribbean near the islands of Antigua and Barbuda.

It's decked out inside

The Seven Seas has four spacious decks and plenty of room for relaxing and entertaining guests. It features nine cabins that can accommodate up to 20 people, plus 28 crew members. The owner's suite for Spielberg is gorgeous and has a deck with a jacuzzi, office, and private terrace. It also has a full-beam VIP stateroom on the main deck with several other cabins on the lower deck (via Robb Report and Superyacht Times ).

Designers Nuvolari Lenard and Molly Isaksen collaborated to create the boat's lush wooden-themed interior (via Architectural Digest ). As would be expected, a yacht as opulent as the Seven Seas is jam-packed with amenities for Spielberg and his guests to enjoy. Published photos of the Seven Seas show jumbo screens in every room and a home cinema onboard. You can also find a sauna, steam room, gym, massage room, lounge areas, bars, and a swimming pool. This yacht is so large it can even accommodate a helipad. Like other superyachts, it comes with the standard garage where you can fit speedboats, water toys, and diving gear.

Now that Steven Spielberg has sold his yacht, fans just have to wait and see if another mega yacht is coming in the future.

Does this 357-Foot New Yacht Belong to Steven Spielberg?

Oceanco is keeping details of the mammoth vessel’s owner under wraps.

By Irenie Forshaw

Steven Spielberg yacht

Oceanco is used to catering for the fabulously wealthy; earlier this year the Dutch shipbuilder delivered Jeff Bezos’s gleaming new ship , Koru. Now, the rumor mill is going into overdrive once again. This time, Steven Spielberg is reportedly the billionaire behind its newest yacht: Seven Seas.

Spanning 357 feet, the mammoth motoryacht isn’t as long as Koru – which scooped the title of the longest sailing yacht on the planet at 417 ft – but she does cut an impressive figure. This isn’t Spielberg’s first foray into the yachting world – the Hollywood director had his first ship (also called Seven Seas ) delivered by Oceanco back in 2010.

The original Seven Seas – whose name is inspired by Spielberg’s seven children – measured 282 feet and boasted an expansive spa , gym, beauty salon, and, of course, movie theatre. But the four-time Academy Award winner sold the ship to Canadian billionaire Barry Zekelman in 2021 for a cool $151m (the ship has since been renamed Man of Steel).

It seems Spielberg has caught the superyacht bug; the new Seven Seas is even bigger and more lavish than her predecessor. So, what do we know about the director’s latest ship? While Oceanco has remained relatively tight-lipped on the project, a few key details have emerged which we’ll dive into here.

Who is building Steven Spielberg’s new yacht?

The superyacht – previously known as project Y720 – was commissioned back in 2022 for a whopping $250m. She was built by Oceanco – the same shipyard that made Spielberg’s old boat in Alblasserdam, a town in the western Netherlands around 12 miles from Rotterdam. Omani billionaire businessman Mohammed al Barwani bought the luxury shipyard back in 2010 (he also owns Turquoise Yachts in Istanbul).

How to Design an Amazing Superyacht Interior

Oceanco has an impressive track record when it comes to building jaw-dropping superyachts. As well as recently unveiling Bezos’s Koru, four years ago the shipbuilder delivered Black Pearl – a striking three-mast vessel which, at 350 ft, became the largest sailing yacht in the world at the time, and garnered attention for its cutting-edge eco-credentials.

What do we know about the design?

steven spielberg yacht

Oceanco collaborated with Dutch firm Sinot Yacht Architecture Design to build Spielberg’s new yacht. The project was overseen by Lateral Naval Architects, with the team carrying out an “extensive optimization process” to ensure Seven Seas met the highest performance standards (she is the first LY3-compliant yacht to feature a Marine Evacuation System).

Powered by twin MTU 20V 4000 M73L diesel engines, she is able to reach top speeds of up to 20 knots and weighs in at 4,444 GT. Her sleek steel hull, teak deck, and lightweight aluminum superstructure give her a graceful silhouette; this is certainly a yacht to turn heads.

Considerably larger than Spielberg’s former yacht, Seven Seas 2.0 can host up to 14 guests across seven cabins (so there’s plenty of space for his entire family). There’s also room onboard for up to 30 crew, plus a gym, pool, spa, beach club, helipad and tender garage. Oh, and there’s a movie theatre too. Obviously.

The fourth largest project delivered by Oceanco to date, she was glimpsed for the first time in March 2022 being rolled out of the construction shed at the shipyard and was spotted in the Port of Gibraltar in early July.

How about the interiors?

Spielberg yacht exterior

It’s extremely unlikely we’ll get to see inside Spielberg’s new yacht anytime soon, but we do know the interiors onboard Seven Seas have been crafted by Beverly Hills-based designer Molly Isaksen (in a telling sign she was also brought in for the interiors onboard Man of Steel ).

While details remain sparse, Oceanco did reveal we can expect plenty of “natural materials and glass onboard, offering guests an unparalleled outward-looking experience”.

Oceanco claims Seven Seas also offers “outstanding performance and seakeeping ability.” The folks at Lateral Naval Architects carried out an extensive optimization process to ensure the 4,444 GT cruiser excels in all areas, and even partnered with Oceanco to develop the propulsion system. Seven Seas is powered by twin MTU 20V 4000 M73L diesel engines that can produce 4,813 hp each and propel the vessel to 20 knots. She is also the first LY3-compliant yacht (the British government’s classification for big commercial craft), to feature a marine evacuation system, according to Oceanco. Such systems make it easy and quick for you to slide into a lifeboat should an emergency situation arise.

The original Seven Seas, now known as Man of Steel , was delivered to Spielberg in 2010. The four-time Academy Award winner, who ranks as the most commercially successful director in history with a net worth of $4 billion, spared no expense when designing his dream machine. He opted for nine generous staterooms, a spa, a gym, a pool, a beach club, a helipad, a tender garage, and a full movie theater, of course. Over the past decade, the OG Seven Seas has lived up to its moniker, sailing the coast of France during the Cannes Film Festival and the waters of Antigua and Barbuda. The high-profile 282-footer will certainly be a tough act to follow, but the new 357-footer could well steal the spotlight.

Steven Spielberg Lists His Superyacht for $160 Million

By Isis Briones

Beyond his West Coast megahomes , Steven Spielberg also owns a 282-foot-long superyacht. The legendary film director bought it in 2010, but after a decade of ownership, Dirt reports that he’s putting his custom-crafted vessel, Seven Seas, up for sale with a high asking price of around $160 million.

The massive mansion-sized vessel was named after his seven kids and his former wife, actress Kate Capshaw. Built by Oceanco, it features four decks, 45,000 gallons of fresh water, and a 77,000-gallon fuel tank with a range of up to 5,200 miles, which is more than enough for a transatlantic trip. Apart from all the space and power, the yacht is equipped with a swimming pool, multiple spas, a total of 17 televisions, easy-to-control smart-home technology, and much more.

In order to operate things safely, the listing says it takes a crew of 28 people. When it came to design and decor, Spielberg called on the expertise of Nuvolari & Lenard and Molly Isaksen. Upon entering, there’s a wood-paneled common area that has elegant built-in shelves lined with books and even a bar set up with Guinness on draft.

The moviemaker’s main suite is on the upper level with a private study, an extensive wardrobe, and a decked-out bathroom that’s bigger than most New York City studio apartments. Naturally, one of the standout amenities is the ship’s state-of-the-art screening room complete with plush sofas and a baby grand piano. Finally, we’d be remiss not to mention the one-of-a-kind views all around the Jaws director’s boat—though, of course, they are ever-changing.

Inside steven spielberg’s real estate portfolio—including his mega-yacht, the iconic filmmaker’s love for world-building extends way beyond the big screen.

By  Joyce Chen

Though he’s been in the movie business for more than 50 years, Steven Spielberg only recently shared his own story through the award-winning autobiographical drama  The Fabelmans.  The iconic director has largely kept his private life out of the spotlight, preferring his professional accomplishments to take center stage, but what is known about his off-screen pursuits is that he has a deep love for real estate and luxury vehicles.

“The only difference between redoing the house and making a film is that I paid for it,” he once  told  Architectural Digest of turning his Pacific Palisades estate into his dream home. In other words, the intentionality and attention to detail that the director is so well-known for onscreen extends into his vast real estate portfolio. Over the years, he has bought and sold properties in Malibu, New York City, East Hampton, and Naples, Florida (though details on his homes there are scarce), among other locales. Here, we’ve rounded up a few of the places he’s called home.

A view of the main house from inside the guesthouse at Spielberg’s East Hampton compound. Photo: Norman McGrath

In the earlier years of Spielberg’s career, he and his then wife, Amy Irving, lived between an apartment in Manhattan and a summer cottage in the Hamptons. Spielberg had reportedly purchased the main property for the 3.9-acre Hamptons compound at the recommendation of his mentor, media mogul Steve Ross. The director worked with architect Charles Gwathmey to reimagine the main house from an 18th-century Dutch barn (the family later dubbed the house Quelle Barn). Spielberg’s favorite feature of the home? “The statement of the staircase,” he told  AD  in May 1988, of the zigzagging stairs that run through the middle of the barn.

Spielberg’s cedar-shingle guesthouse at his Hamptons property. Photo: Norman McGrath

In 1991, Spielberg called upon Gwathmey to construct an additional cedar-shingle modern guesthouse, which  was featured in  AD.  “Working with Steven is great because he is visual, yet he also believes in collaboration,” Gwathmey told  AD  at the time. The building is single-story and features two primary bedrooms that each have their own fireplace, window seat, and outdoor terrace. At the opposite end of the skylit gallery are the children’s bedrooms, outfitted with bunk beds. Several years later, the director and the architect collaborated again after Spielberg purchased several more acres, this time constructing a second guesthouse, a garage with staff rooms above it, and stables. Spielberg still owns this property.

The San Remo in New York City. Photo: Noam Galai/Getty Images

Spielberg’s longtime Manhattan apartment is located in the San Remo building, easily one of the most expensive and coveted apartment co-ops in the world. Though it’s unclear when and for how much the director purchased his home in the prewar Beaux Arts building designed by Emery Roth, what is known is that  he owns  a pad on the 17th floor measuring 6,000 square feet and overlooking Central Park West. In 2000,  the  Times  reported  that fellow residents in the 27-floor luxury building were unhappy with the “jackhammering and renovation” that was going on, so it is safe to assume that Spielberg has made some upgrades to the unit since his purchase. Other celebrities who have lived in the San Remo include Steve Jobs, Bono, Diane Keaton, Bruce Willis, Mary Tyler Moore, and Tiger Woods.

Before Spielberg purchased the five-bedroom, six-bathroom Pacific Palisades property that would become his primary residence, he  already owned two other places  in LA—a bachelor pad in Coldwater Canyon and a beach house in Malibu. When he and Irving decided to look for a more permanent home on the West Coast, however, they went with something slightly larger: a 10,000-square-foot tile-roof stucco mansion situated on three hillside acres overlooking the city. “It was like going to Hawaii and finding the perfect cove,” he  told  AD  of the residence’s prime location. The Mediterranean-style mansion, which was previously owned by Cary Grant and David O. Selznick, among other Hollywood luminaries, was already impressive, but Spielberg took it upon himself to  further reimagine parts of the property, enlisting the help of architect Harry Newman.

Steven Spielberg’s Pacific Palisades home on the May 1989 cover of Architectural Digest . Photo: Mary E. Nichols

He doubled its size to 20,000 square feet; created a hobbit-themed TV room with mushroom-shaped windows, a retractable television screen, and curved walls; and installed a 14,000-gallon curved aquarium in the primary bathroom. In the mid-’90s, he added two important structures to the property: a guesthouse and a study, which he wanted to integrate “as if they had always been there,” he told  AD  in April 1994. The three structures are connected via a spiral ramp reminiscent of Frank Lloyd Wright’s late work. Spielberg also  added a vineyard  to the property in 2013. The director and his current wife, Kate Capshaw, still consider this compound their primary residence, and  it has been estimated  to be worth upwards of $100 million by the website Celebrity Net Worth.

Spielberg purchased the first of two Malibu properties that would become a mega-compound for $3.375 million this year. More than a decade later, in 2000, he would buy the second for $3.2 million. The two-parcel spread comprised 1.41 acres with a 7,237-square-foot main house and a separate, self-contained guesthouse.  Built in the Arts & Crafts style,  the seven-bedroom, eight-and-a-half bathroom residence included a media lounge with a fireplace, a dining area with a bay window, and a spacious home theater. The second-floor primary suite boasted an oceanside terrace, a massage room, and a private library. Spielberg and Capshaw put the sprawling residence  up for rent in 2013,  asking $125,000 a month (later, it rose to $150,000 a month) before finally  selling it in an off-market deal  for $26 million in 2015.

Spielberg next expanded his East Hampton holdings with the purchase of  a 1900s home for $20 million.  The Hollywood icon promptly razed the existing house and planned to build a new mansion in its place on the three-acre pond-front lot, but nothing came of the building plans for years. Finally, in 2014, he  quietly listed the empty  Georgica Cove lot for $24.5 million. It  sold for $21.25 million  several months later.

Spielberg then turned his attention from land to sea, commissioning the construction of a 282-foot mega-yacht he named  Seven Seas  after his seven children and his wife. The oceanic behemoth was built by Netherlands-based company Oceano, and featured four decks, a swimming pool, multiple spas, full cinema, and helipad. It  could easily accommodate up to 20 guests  in its nine staterooms, as well as up to 28 crew members, and with its 77,000-gallon fuel tank, could potentially make a transatlantic trip. The main suite on the upper level featured a private study, a walk-in closet, and a spacious bathroom with spa. Spielberg  listed  Seven Seas  for $160 million  in spring 2021 and  sold it several months later  for  a reported $150 million,  to billionaire steel baron Barry Zekelman. The yacht has since been appropriately renamed to  Man of Steel . It has been rumored that in 2019,  Spielberg commissioned Oceano  to build a new, even larger yacht measuring 358 feet.

Steven Spielberg’s Superyacht Could Be Yours For $206 Million

Steven Spielberg’s Superyacht Could Be Yours For $206 Million

Chris Singh

Legendary film director Steven Spielberg has listed his mansion-sized superyacht, the immense 86 metre-long Seven Seas, with plans to palm it off to anyone with a spare US$160 million (AU$206 million) lying around.

Assumedly, the director is selling before he climbs even higher in the world of superyachts – reports indicate that the Hollywood behemoth has commissioned an even bigger boat (insert obvious Jaws reference) for future delivery.

Seven Seas is big enough to accommodate 15-20 people across 7 cabins and 4 decks, including a private owner’s deck with a supersized master bedroom that’s big enough for a study, a bar (reportedly with Guinness on tap), an apartment-sized bathroom, and a private area with an outdoor pool. Space is maximised throughout all interiors, including 4 other large guest suites and a VIP statement on the main deck which measures the full width of the 14.2 metre beam. Another VIP stateroom is located on the terrace deck, sporting a similar size.

inside steven spielberg's yacht

The 4 decks are connected both by a vintage glass elevator and a winding stairway, giving guests easy access to amenities like an outdoor swimming pool and two spas, a special screening room, and a gorgeous wood-panelled main saloon which is located on the same upper deck as the owner’s suite. Aft of this watering hole is a lush circular dining room with floor-to-ceiling glass windows that slide open and expand onto a 250 square metre teak deck that has no doubt seen plenty of post-dinner cocktails being toasted to the wide open seas.

Elsewhere on the uppermost deck is the bridge and captain’s quarters, as well as a fitness & wellness centre that spans a gym, massage room, sauna, and steam room.

RELATED: The Ridiculous Requests Of Superyacht Owners

The screening room of Steven Spielberg's superyacht

The Steven Spielberg superyacht also features a trio of onboard tenders that are fitted to the highest standards of luxury, spanning a 9 metre sports boat, and a 10 metre limo-esque tender. The Seven Seas’ garage also features three Wave Runners and various diving equipment.

RELATED: Planet Nine: Inside The 73-Metre Tenet Superyacht

As for what’s driving the entire thing, the Seven Seas is capable of maximum 19.5 knots, with a cruise speed of 14-15 knots. The specs are driven by twin 4,680 horsepower engines, allowing for a range of 8,368km which is more than enough for one easy transatlantic crossing.

Celebrity-owned Megayachts have been plastered all over the internet lately due to a swift uptick in the industry, assumedly driven by the COVID-19 pandemic and the fact that all these mega-rich figures didn’t actually lose much (if any) money during the lockdowns. Just about everyone on the internet would know by now that Jeff Bezos is awaiting a new superyacht from Oceanco which is big enough that it needs its own support yacht, just to fit a helipad and other essentials

If you’ve got a cool $206 million lying around, you could join this list of seafaring moguls. Although most of us will have to contend with picture-induced escapism. As such, check out more images of the Steven Spielberg superyacht below.

The World’s Most Expensive Yacht Charter: Steven Spielberg’s The Seven Seas

Roger Scoble blogs about the latest gadgets, travel and luxury…

After taking delivery of his amazing $200 million megayacht, the 282-foot Seven Seas, you’d think that director Steven Spielberg would want to keep it to himself.

Now it seems as though the famed director wants to recoup some of his impressive investment – he’s offering the ultra-luxurious yacht for charter at $1.3 million per week. That makes it the world’s most expensive yacht charter, leaving the likes of P. Diddy and Simon Cowell’s crafts in the dust.

Steven Spielberg's The Seven Seas

The 282-ft. vessel, custom built by Dutch shipyard Oceanco, features an elegant and tasteful interior design scheme by Nuvolari & Lenard. The Seven Seas is equipped for the most demanding Hollywood mogul. It’s most striking feature is an infinity pool with a 15-foot glass wall that doubles as a movie screen so Spielberg and guests can watch his latest production while swimming or lounging poolside.

Celebrity guests on the megayacht have included Leonardo DiCaprio and Blake Lively, who were pictured on board when the yacht was in the French Riviera.

It also boasts accommodation and extensive amenities for 12 guests along with a crew of 26, including a private owner’s deck with a large separate master stateroom featuring a study and private deck area with a Jacuzzi and VIP cabins for his movie star pals. Other luxury touches include a fully equipped gymnasium, a spa and massage room and another indoor cinema – all fitted out with tons of walnut, teak and rosewood.

Steven Spielberg’s The Seven Seas: The World's Most Expensive Charter

seven-seas-yacht-1

How much would you give to spend a week aboard Steven Spielberg’s $184 million super yacht? Few people expected the famed film director to open his yacht’s doors to strangers. However, even fewer people will afford to hire this sweet yacht considering the fact that it is the world’s most expensive charter; Steven Spiegel is chartering off his super yacht for a whopping $1.3 million per week. But, is a week on The Seven Seas worth that much? Here is a comprehensive review of everything that goes into making the world’s most expensive charter.

A Brief Overview

The Seven Seas was custom built to suit Steven Spielberg’s high standard of comfort and luxury. It was custom built by Dutch Shipyard Oceanco , and it is considered one of the renowned yacht making company’s best projects. Its opulent and elegant design is courtesy of Nuvolari & Lenard, but much of the layout has been conjured by the renowned director’s custom requests.

Expectedly, The Seven Seas has hosted some of the biggest names in Hollywood; in fact, this is one of the reasons why people are surprised about Steven Spielberg’s decision to charter out the yacht. Some of his visitors include Blake Lively and Leonardo DiCaprio . Apparently, this super yacht is so inviting that the dedicated director spent his first holiday in years on it during the summer of 2015, in spite of describing himself as ‘not much of an ocean lover’.

Exterior Design Review

The Seven Seas’ exterior is all about good looks, and it easily gives hints of the opulence and comfort that lie within. The super yacht measures 282 feet and features a sleek and flashy appearance typical of super yachts in its category. The platforms hosting the upper decks are white in color, and they blend in well with the blue hull. The steel hull also features an aluminum super structure with a 14m beam and 4m draft.

Interior Design Review

The interior of this super yacht is everything and more you would expect. Its designers collaborated with Steven Spielberg is designing the interior, and, as you may imagine, it almost pushes the boundaries of luxury to the limit. The walls is every room in the super yacht are lined with rich rosewood, walnut, and teak planks that give it an exotic look and feel. The organic wood, coupled with the exclusive décor and rich colors, makes the interior of this yacht every bit serene and gives it a homey feel.

What’s more, the rooms are spacious so that movement is easy, but there are rumors that Steven Spielberg may be setting his sights on an even bigger super yacht. The highlights of The Seven Seas lie in its numerous amenities that are designed solely for luxury and comfort. The biggest highlight is an infinity pool as it is fitted with a 15-foot dual-purpose glass screen that gives unhindered access to movies on a large HDTV; it is not a common feature in super yachts, but it reflects the dedication that one of the world’s greatest directors has to his career.

The infinity pool is also convertible to a helipad. Additionally, there is an indoor cinema room with an even bigger screen, and this, too, comes as no surprise. The mega yacht also features a fully equipped gym with floor-to-ceiling glass windows for panoramic views of the sea. There is also a spa and massage room where guests can get full-body pampering for utmost comfort. Of course, this mega yacht features a fully stocked bar where visitors can unwind over a drink or two.

The Seven Seas also comes with a wide range of water sport toys in case one wants to get intimate with the ocean. The water sport toys include wetsuits, snorkeling equipment, laser picos, inflatable kayaks, sea bobs, inflatable toys, water skis, as well as a knee board.

Accommodation

There is plenty of room for visitors as well as crew members aboard The Seven Seas. In total, the mega yacht can house up to 35 people: 12 guests (plus owner included) and up to 23 crew members. The guest rooms are spacious and fitted with high-end décor. Expectedly, the owner’s cabin is the biggest and most exotic of all the rooms as it features such amenities as a study room and private Jacuzzi.

The other six double cabins are also spacious and fitted with high-end décor fit for Steven Spielberg’s Hollywood friends. The crew rooms, on the other hand, are not as large but nevertheless comfortable especially considering that super yachts in The Seven Seas’ category carry a handful crew members.

Performance

The Seven Seas is just as powerful and fast as it is luxurious thanks to its powerful engine. It has a cruising pace of 15 knots and can achieve a maximum speed of 20 knots. What’s more, this mega yacht comes fitted with a special stabilizing system that prevents a bumpy ride even at top speed; apparently, Steven Spielberg is highly prone to sea sickness. Its range, on the other hand, stands at 5000 nautical miles.

Chartering The Seven Seas

The Seven Seas is no longer exclusive to Steven Spielberg and his inner circle of actors and film directors, but it will still remain a reserve for the rich considering its charter price. The Hollywood mogul recently announced that the mega yacht is available for higher for a steep price of $1.3 million per week with all expenses accounted for. This figure has stirred a lot of buzz, but it has not kept ardent super yacht admirers from spending some time, and having some fun, on one of the world’s best super yachts.

Recently, the famed film director has stirred even more buzz in the media after he hinted that he may upgrade to an even bigger mega yacht. There are rumors that Steven Spielberg may sell The Seven Seas and buy a new yacht measuring 300 feet, which is only 18 feet more than his current gem. However, while the difference in size might not be significant, it is expected that the new super yacht will pack even more comfort and luxury as it will cost a cool $250 million. In the meanwhile, most people cannot get enough of The Seven Seas, and many more cannot wait to see Steven Spielberg’s rumored new yacht.

“Darker storyline than E.T.?”: Emily Blunt’s Possible Casting in Steven Spielberg’s UFO Film Has Peaked Fans’ Interest

E mily Blunt’s stars are clearly aligning, as evidenced by her recent stellar performance in Oppenheimer , which has left her enjoying her first Oscar nomination. But could her next artistic venture be just as enthralling? Yes, indeed!

With Deadline’s recent reports, excitement grows as it is revealed that Blunt may appear in another cinematic gem—a forthcoming UFO project helmed by none other than the legendary Steven Spielberg for Universal Pictures. This film, envisioned by Spielberg, written by the talented David Koepp of Jurassic Park fame and produced by Kristie Macosko Krieger, is shaping up to be a must-see “ two-hander” spectacle.

Given Spielberg’s golden touch and with an icon like Emily Blunt front & center, dare we say that this film might just be the next cultural phenomenon? That being said, this has certainly got fans talking.

Inside Steven Spielberg’s Next Untitled Movie with Emily Blunt

According to THR ’s May report, Steven Spielberg ’s upcoming movie will hit theaters on May 15, 2026, as announced by Universal Pictures. With Kristie Macosko Krieger producing, the untitled project was described as a “new original event film” by the studio.

“This isn’t the flex she thinks it is”: Emily Blunt Upsets Marvel Fans With Her Condescending Remark Despite Almost Joining The Avengers

David Koepp, who wrote the scripts for Jurassic Park, Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, and War of the Worlds , is going to write the screenplay. Moreover, with a prominent actress circling a lead role in this project, things are heating up right now. Yes, w e learned from Deadline that Emily Blunt is reportedly in talks to star in the highly anticipated film, which has fans buzzing with excitement.

Given that the project is characterized as a “ two-hander” , the Oscar-nominated actress , 41, is expected to portray one of the two leads. Though the report does not specifically mention it, it was previously reported that Spielberg’s next film with Koepp is a “UFO film ” (see Screen Rant ).

While details about the plot are being kept secret, some fans are speculating that the movie may have a darker storyline than Spielberg’s beloved E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial. After all, the legendary director has a knack for blending sci-fi elements with suspense & drama, as seen in classics like Close Encounters of the Third Kind and War of the Worlds.

“There’s tremendous support with the actors”: Despite Failing Box Office, Both Emily Blunt and Ryan Gosling Support The Fall Guy Leading an Oscars Revolution That May Introduce a New Category

And obviously, after her stellar performances in films like The Devil Wears Prada, A Quiet Place, and The Girl on the Train , Blunt is no stranger to tackling complex and intriguing roles. So, with Spielberg at the helm , fans can only imagine the magic to be created on screen.

Fans React To Emily Blunt & Steven Spielberg’s Potential (Sci-Fi) Collaboration

As Emily Blunt appears to be on track to land her first partnership with one of Hollywood’s greatest directors, her possible involvement in Steven Spielberg’s project is already creating a lot of buzz. Not to be overlooked is the fact that she has had a successful partnership with Universal, having recently starred in Christopher Nolan’s critically acclaimed & Oscar-winning film Oppenheimer .

Blunt also worked with Universal on David Leitch’s The Fall Guy, which starred Barbie star Ryan Gosling and was quite well received by critics but was a box office bomb.  Having said that, fans are excited to see her bring her charm and skill to the untitled movie.

Here are a few comments from fans:

If the deal is finalized, this would mark the first and most fruitful collaboration between the actress and the director. As we eagerly await more details about Spielberg’s mysterious UFO project, we can expect a stellar performance that will leave audiences on the edge of their seats.

The film is scheduled for release on May 15, 2026.

Steven Spielberg at the 2024 Tribeca Festival.

Most of the action in Steven Spielberg ‘s 1974 directorial debut, Sugarland Express , unfolds over the course of an extended car chase as Goldie Hawn and William Atherton’s characters try to evade a long convoy of police vehicles in an effort to regain custody of their young son from foster care.

While the film predated high-speed freeway car chases, modern audiences might be reminded of such events, including O.J. Simpson ‘s infamous white Bronco chase, which unfolded roughly 30 years ago, on June 17, 1994.

Speaking after a 50th-anniversary screening of Sugarland at the 2024 Tribeca Festival , Spielberg jokingly said he thought, “Shit, they’re stealing my thunder,” when he saw the Simpson chase.

Elsewhere during the post-screening Q&A, Spielberg reflected on making the film, including casting lead Hawn and its struggles at the box office as well as how it led to his next film, Jaws .

After a brief video message from Hawn, who shared fond memories of working with the Hollywood legend, Spielberg spoke about how he thought of her for his lead role when studio Universal said they wouldn’t make the movie without a star.

“She has a pure and honest heart,” said Spielberg. “The movie wouldn’t have gotten made without her.”

Though Hawn wasn’t previously known for projects like Sugarland , Spielberg felt she was right for it. However, he noted expectations backfired as he argued audiences expected to see a Goldie Hawn movie and got his film, complete with its tragic ending.

Indeed, Spielberg recalled how the film got great reviews but performed so poorly at the box office that the studio yanked it after two weeks.

So, he joked, “You’re the first audience to ever see Sugarland Express in 50 years.” The BMCC venue in lower Manhattan was packed, with the audience even giving Spielberg a standing ovation when he took the stage.

Sugarland producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown went on to bring Spielberg to Jaws through a serendipitous turn of events.

The director also revealed a fun Easter egg for film fans: Zanuck’s son plays baby Langston, whom Hawn and Atherton’s characters are trying to get back, in Sugarland Express .

Sugarland Express failed at the box office per Spielberg, as audiences wanted to see a lighthearted Goldie Hawn in the movie, not to mention, it had a tragic ending.

Here are some of the memories Spielberg shared this afternoon in a conversation with Variety’s Brent Lang:

-Spielberg based the movie on an article he read in an LA Valley paper, The Citizens News , with the headline “Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde.” “It was the story of this couple in Texas, Bobby and Ila Fae Dent, who, to get their baby back from child welfare, led a multi-car police chase through Texas, and “it just seemed like an incredible story,” said the filmmaker. He sent the article to screenwriters Hal Barwood and Matthew Robbins, and off they went.

–Spielberg made the movie after the TV movie Duel , which prompted the town to send him feature scripts. “It wasn’t like I fell of the turnip truck and fell into Sugarland Express, ” said Spielberg who had five years of TV directing under his belt. However, Sugarland Express was the movie he wanted to make. Universal at the time was being run by Jennings Lang. The pic was produced by David Brown and Richard Zanuck who had a new deal at Universal, the duo having just left Fox. The filmmaker would promptly reteam with Brown and Zanuck for Jaws.

–Legendary DP Vilmos Zsigmond was Spielberg’s first choice. The director simply phoned up the McCable and Mrs. Miller cinematographer. They shared the same taste in movies. Zigmond shot Sugarland Express in daylight, sans lights. The movie also repped Spielberg’s first collaboration with composer John Williams, a working relationship now in its 51st year. Similar to Zsigmond, Spielberg was a fan of Williams’ scores, the composer relying on a harmonica player Toots Thielemans for the pic’s main theme.

–There was a disagreement with the studio over the ending. Spielberg discussed reshooting the ending with the scribes who told him he’d be crazy to do so. “They talked me immediately out of it,” said Spielberg. Univeral suits were upset by the finale, and demanded that a legend be placed at the end which read that Hawn’s character wound up with her baby. Spielberg refused. Execs insisted as audiences wouldn’t see the film unless they knew the mom and baby were safe at the end. Spielberg protested as far as he could. The studio got their way and “people still didn’t come out to see the movie!” exclaimed Spielberg.

–Spielberg loved working with Brown and Zanuck. When Zanuck first watched Sugarland Express, he came into the screening with a big notepad and a pencil. When the movie ended, he handed the notes to Spielberg, and they were all blank. “I’ll never forget that. I did the same thing when Barry Sonnenfeld directed the first Men in Black and showed me the rough cut, I did the same thing, I gave him blank peach paper of notes.”

Despite Sugarland Express being a dud, it put him back to work with Zanuck and Brown on Jaws. Spielberg discovered the galleys of Jaws in their office. Their assistant let him read it, and Spielberg soaked up the novel in a weekend. “I was floored by it,” he said. They already had a director on it, but a month later, the filmmaker fell out and Spielberg was offered the movie. The rest is $477M-plus box office grossing history. Trivia: Richard Zanuck’s son is in Sugarland Express, he plays Baby Langston.

Did Spielberg think of his movie during the O.J. Simpson Bronco chase? “I did! I did! I said, ‘Shit, they’re stealing my thunder!'”

SPOILER ALERT:  This story discusses major plot points, including the ending for “ Inside Out 2 ” now playing in theaters.

“Inside Out 2” director Kelsey Mann and producer Mark Nielsen held “a good 25 meetings” in preparation for the film’s climactic scene — when Riley, the movie’s teenage protagonist, suffers an anxiety attack. But these weren’t any average production discussions, they were “the gatherings of the mind council,” which summoned all the department heads together to strategize the execution of the scene.

Popular on Variety

Related stories, xbox dominated summer game fest — but game pass remains tricky bet, kevin costner refused to shorten his eulogy at whitney houston's funeral just so cnn could air commercials during the telecast: 'they can get over that'.

“Inside Out 2” follows a now 13-year-old Riley who must grapple with a new set of overbearing emotions while staying at a sleepaway hockey camp — with the most controlling emotion of all being Anxiety (voiced by Maya Hawke ). In the film’s third act, Riley’s nerves bubble over when her coach banishes her to the penalty box during her final scrimmage. Inside her head, a tornado of anxiety forms around the central controls, while in the real world, Riley breaks down into a panic.

Because the film was produced “more or less in show order,” the anxiety attack scene was tackled toward the end of the production schedule. With a hard deadline on the horizon, the Pixar team needed to hustle up if they wanted to make the June 2024 release date.

“You want to make sure that it feels real and authentic,” Mann says of the scene. “To come up with a look that achieves that is really hard. It took lots of different departments all working collaboratively in order to pull that off. We also did it right at the end. Time was running out.”

“We started doing a lot of things like tightening up the shutter angle, so, suddenly, everything’s a lot sharper and the focus got a lot deeper as Riley’s putting more and more pressure on herself,” Habib explains. “Then, when the anxiety attack hits, suddenly we flip everything. The focus goes extremely shallow and the world drops away.”

Adds Pytko: “That moment in particular was interesting because we had talked about, what if we start vibrating the background as Riley gets deeper into this panic attack? We overexposed the light a lot and really flooded this light coming around Riley as she’s going through this moment. Then adding that [vibration] in there really sold what happened.”

As “a person who has had an anxiety attack,” Hawke brought that personal experience to her voice performance, leaning into the voice she created in her own head when she gets anxious. “I broadened her and strengthened her as a character for this movie, so I felt really connected to it,” she says. And when it came time to shoot the scene, Hawke focused on her breathing to capture the feeling of panic.

“Your breath moves to a different place and you can’t breathe as deeply as you want to,” Hawke adds, explaining that she worked with filmmakers to determine the right amount of breath to use to portray Anxiety’s spiral. “I saw it as the air not going down into her breath. It was like a tornado, and you can’t breathe when you’re stuck in the middle of a tornado.”

Amy Poehler described the moment as “painful” for her character, Joy, who tries to calm Anxiety down as the mother figure to Riley and her emotions. As a mother to two teenage boys, Poehler related to Joy’s struggle to help despite not having the answers.

“That’s a hard thing, when you’re a parent and you don’t know what to do when you’re trying to help your child. If Riley is Joy’s kid, then Joy is kind of like ‘What’s happened to my kid?'” Poehler says. “Pixar is so smart to have Joy take her foot off the gas, and by doing so, and not pushing so hard, Riley just soothes herself, which is the hard lesson of growing up.”

As Riley regains control of her emotions (and inside of headquarters, her emotions embrace each other), there’s a touching moment where the console calls Joy back to it, to pilot Riley through the remainder of her playing time in the scrimmage.

“It’s so deep,” Poehler says of the moment and the larger metaphor it represents as the teenager learns to play with joy again. “It’s an adult lesson – you keep forgetting why you even started doing anything once you get caught up in all the other stuff.”

In reprising her role from 2016’s Oscar-winning film “Inside Out,” Poehler was particularly intrigued by the big feelings the sequel asked Riley and Joy to navigate.

Hawke sees Riley and Anxiety on similar missions in the film. “Or maybe I’m just projecting that,” she quips, “But it’s a lot about control: Anxiety really wants to take control over the console and believes that if she were able to have that kind of control, she’d be fine. And Riley is trying to control the outcome of whether or not she gets onto this team, control where her friends are going to go to school, control how she feels, control how she plays.”

Their lesson by the end of the film is learn to let go and lean into their being present and joyful. It’s understanding that “I can’t control everything, but what I can control is myself and how I’m behaving,” Hawke explains. “Am I treating the people around me with respect or not?”

That sentiment resonates with Poehler, who chimes in with more food for thought. “What does a win look like?” she asks, posing another existential question the film explores. “What is winning? Is it enjoying what you’re doing? Is it beating the other team? … I love that question. It’s a good one to keep thinking about for your whole life.”
