Yacht & Catamaran Charter in Arrecife, Lanzarote

We can help you find the perfect yacht or catamaran to sail from Arrecife, Lanzarote!

Lanzarote, Spain yacht and catamaran charter

Sailing from Lanzarote

Lanzarote has it all: great beaches, lots of cute villages to sail to and explore, good marina facilities, plenty of wildlife, and, of course, good sailing weather all year round – the sailing literally never stops here. Throw in some sunshine, fantastic Spanish cuisine, and regular flights to mainland Europe and you have an outstanding place to sail.

From our base in Arrecife, near to the airport, you can hop south to the neighbouring party-island of Fuerteventura, north to find dolphins and seals and other wildlife in the remote Chinijo islands, or even do a full three-sixty of the island. They call the weather here ‘the eternal spring’ and the season runs from January to December, with the peak being in the summer months. We can help you find and book your ideal yacht or catamaran, with one of our trusted Charter Partners - just get in touch or search in the pink box with live prices and availability !

Must See if you're Sailing from Lanzarote

SAILING RATING:  Intermediate / Advanced - unlike the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands have tidal water, so you’ll need to be comfortable with tides to sail here. It’s also less sheltered than the Med, so winds can be a little strong - we’d recommend Lanzarote for sailors with some experience.

MUST-SEE:  Check out our full suggested itinerary below. We'd highly recommend taking in the remote tranquillity of La Graciosa , the beaches of Playa Blanca , and the lively nightlife of Puerto del Carmen .

WHAT WE CAN OFFER:  We have a great range of yachts and catamarans available for charter from our trusted Charter Partners, all available bareboat or Skippered. We can also arrange a Hostess, Personal Chef and other crew.

GETTING THERE:  From Lanzarote airport to our base in Arrecife it’s just a 15 minute drive. We can help arrange private transfers.

WHY BOOK WITH US?  We only work with the very best professional charter operators , who we have met, know, and trust to give you the same outstanding customer service as you'll get from PlainSailing.com.

WHAT NEXT?  Use the pink box to search for yachts or catamarans with LIVE pricing & availability - if you have any other questions or requests, get in touch via Live Chat, the Contact Form , or by phone.

Suggested sailing itinerary, wind & weather conditions, marina details, sample prices   -   lanzarote sailing itinerary  -   wind & weather  -   marina details, 6-day sailing itinerary from lanzarote.

From Arrecife you’re well positioned to head north to the remote wilderness of the Chinijo islands in search of dolphins and other wildlife, head south to neighbouring Fuertaventura, or just bimble up and down the better (East) coast of Lanzarote, enjoying the beaches and marvelling at the volcanic landscape.

Lanzarote - 6 day Sailing itinerary

The itinerary is only a six-day itinerary because you likely won’t get on the boat until late on Saturday afternoon, so it makes sense to get provisions in and to be familiar with the boat (and to see a little of Arrecife before setting sail on Sunday morning. At the other end of the week, you’ll need to return the boat to Arrecife on the Friday night, before overnighting in Arrecife and disembarking on Saturday morning - which gives you six days of fantastic sailing.

Caleta del Sebo

We could talk about continents and self-autonomy all day, but we’ve got some sailing to do, so let’s get the crew and the provisions on board, drop the lines, and let’s get out there! Today we’re sailing north, likely close-hauled against the prevailing northeasterly winds.

Today we’re off to Caleta del Sebo, the capital of La Graciosa island, and the Chinijo islands as a whole. We’re some way off the beaten track - the island has a population of 700, and the village is very basic (but has a few shops and a restaurant) so you’ll feel a bit like Robinson Crusoe when you arrive here.

Without human interference, the island is thriving with wildlife - including dolphins and seals, all sorts of aquatic life, and many birds, including flamingos and, as you might expect, canaries (but beware, the Canary islands names was derived from Latin ‘Canaria’ - meaning dog). Life moves at a slower pace around here, so it’s the ultimate place to stop at on the first day of the holiday.

Playa Blanca

You’ll start to appreciate the vast barren and volcanic terrain of Lanzarote as we sail along it, with craggy cliffs along much of the coastline. This is the side of the island which faces the Atlantic, so waves come literally thousands of miles to crash against these cliffs. The highest point on the island (which is before Caleta da Famara) is Peñas del Chache, is 671m above sea level and is one of the best places in the world for stargazing.

Keep following the coast down and around to reach Papagayo bay on the south coast, which is a sprawling beach and (quiet) tourist resort area, and a return to civilisation. There’s a choice of marinas here, and whilst the Rubicon marina offers a more comfortable place to stay, Playa Blanca is closer to the old town and feels a bit more authentic. There’s plenty of choice of places to eat and drink here, some with stunning views.

Corralejo

Assuming you have time, sail over and round the Isla de Lobos on the way to Corralejo. It’s now a nature reserve to protect the species that live here – people can visit during the day, but there’s no accommodation on the island. You can walk up to the crater on the island if you fancy a hike.

Isla de Lobos means ‘Isle of Seals’ and it was named when explorers first arrived at the island in the fifteenth century. Sadly, there isn’t a single seal left here, after they were all killed for their meat, blubber and skin. And then on to Corralejo. In the 1960’s it was just a handful of fishermans houses, but it has grown massively into a mecca for land-lubbing tourists. It’s the second largest town on the island of Fuerteventura and has a lively nightlife, fine beaches, and even a water-park.

Puerto del Rosario

In contrast to the rest of the island, Puerto del Rosario is still an authentic working town, and the main harbour of the island – it’s been used for centuries as a stopping point for ships traveling across the Atlantic, including those shipping sugar cane, bananas, cotton and, gruesomely, was involved in the very first Spanish shipments of slaves from Africa to the Americas.

Nowadays, there is also some tourism trade, including a few beaches and pleasant places to stroll along the waterfront. There’s also a good range of tapas joints and places to eat – if you want to eat like a proper local, then you need to try the local speciality: goat stew.

Puerto del Rosario

To get there, we’re sailing northwards – in the prevailing wind conditions, it should just about be possible to make it on a single tack, close-hauled all the way – but it’s more fun to keep the crew active anyway. If you’re making good time, you can hit the beach at Playa Quemada, but it’s almost not worth heading into the coast for.

The main road or strip of Puerto del Carmen is 7km long and has something for everyone – from beaches to sunbathe on or architecture to marvel at, from fine dining to McDonalds, from quiet tavernas to pulsating dance clubs, and pretty much everything in-between. There’s a real holiday atmosphere in the air, and it’s a nice place to sit and watch how other people choose to enjoy themselves. Particularly if you’re sat in the sunshine with a nice cool drink. Bliss!

It’s only a short sail around the coast to Arrecife, so you can take your time to explore more of Puerto del Carmen to see what your land-lubbing friends were raving about, particularly if the longer leg of sailing yesterday meant you didn’t get to see much of it. If you want to look super-slick, you can sail the yacht around the corner and throw the anchor down on Playa Grande, which is THE main beach on Lanzarote (and the one you will see on the front of all the brochures).

Once you get sailing, then you could also consider stopping at Playa Honda, where you can watch the aeroplanes landing nearby whilst you enjoy the beach, or head to Castillo de San Gabriel, which used to be the main castle protecting Arrecife from pirates. There’s a walkway back from the castle to the island, and it certainly looks impressive (the other castle to protect Arrecife from pirates was built of wood in 1573, but was burnt down a few years later, by pirates…).

And then it’s time to refuel and to moor up the boat one last time. Hopefully you’ve had a wonderful time in the sunshine, both on-board and exploring the islands, and you’re returning home with better friends than you arrived with. Enjoy one more night in Arrecife, and have a safe flight home. Come to PlainSailing.com when you’re ready to start planning your next adventure. See you online soon :)

Sailing Conditions

Spain Sailing - Wind Conditions

The winds are reliable pretty much all year long, which make getting around by boat quite quick and easy. Be aware that there are spells when they will be quite strong – which, coupled with the boisterousness of the Atlantic seas and the tidal waters means that this is a challenging (and exciting) sailing area that we’d recommend for intermediate sailors and above.

Lanzarote - Sea Temperature

Marina Details - Marina Lanzarote

Marina Lanzarote is a brand new purpose-built marina built within walking distance of Arrecife, the capital of Lanzarote island. It has all the mod cons, including an array of fancy boutique shops and multiple bars and restaurants (including a Burger King!). Everything is new and shiny.

If you're looking for somewhere to spend the night near-ish to the marina, then we recommend the El Charco Aparthotel hotel.

The province of Las Palmas combine the eastern islands, with flat  landscapes and long virgin beaches. Not every island can offer secure  anchorages or comfortable marinas and there is little organized  entertainment or sightseeing on some of them. But more and more sailors  are discovering this most unique cruising area, where everyone can find  any type of sailing vacation to their liking. Each island has plenty of  sunshine and splendid beaches, but also acquires its own  characteristics.

Tenerife yacht charters

Tenerife means “Snowy Mountain”, a tribute to its dormant volcano  of Mount Teide, Spain's highest peak. Due to its unusual rough and steep  shape of landmass, Tenerife has two different climate zones: lush  vegetation and rainfall you will fined sailing to the north, while sunny  and dry in the south. Tenerife has the most of yacht charter  attraction: spectacular volcanic scenery, water sports, extravagant  luxury resorts and vibrant nightlife.

La Palma boat rentals

This is the world's steepest island. It lies on the northwestern  tip of the archipelago and has a cool, moist climate and lush  vegetation. The mountains are covered with forests of pine and giant  fern. The center of the island is dominated by La Caldera de Taburiente,  a volcano's massive crater. National park status is a sign of its  botanical and geological significance. The international Observatory  crowns the summit.

Sailing el Hierro

Sailing to the furthest west island you will fine El Hierro, the  smallest in Canaries. It is not so popular with a holiday crowd, but has  got its fame with naturalists for its unusual fauna and flora. The  turquoise seas of the south coast attract a lot of scuba divers, who  base themselves in the small fishing village of La Restinge.

La Gomera sailing

This island is the most accessible. It's scenery is glorious: Rock  pinnacles protrude out steep slopes covered with ferns; terraced  hillsides glow with palms and flowering creeps. Sailing to La Gomera do  not miss the best part of this island – the Parque Nacional de  Garajonay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Some places are associated with  Columbus, who got his water supplies here. According to legend he also  prayed in the Iglesia de la Asuncion, and stayed at a local house. The  Eastern Islands (Gran Canaria, Lanzarote and Fuerteventure ) belong two  the province of Las Palmas.

Gran Canaria bareboat charter

It is the biggest Canarian Island and is the most popular  sailing destination with vast variety of boat rentals. It's capital La  Palmas de Gran is the largest city in the Canaries. And Maspalomas, in  the south, is one of the biggest resorts in Spain, which consist of  several separate complexes. Set sails and head to San Agustin one of the  serene places with dark sand beaches, sheltered by low cliffs.

Playa del Ingles is the largest and liveliest, with 50 discos and 300  restaurants. Unlike most of the hotels you will have a great sea view  from the board of your sailing yacht or catamaran.

Dumas de Maspalomas

The name speaks for itself: dunes form a nature reserve and are  protected from further development. This sailing destination will offer  you hard-to-resist packages: excursions, go-karts, camel safaris and fun  fairs. Best of these include Palmitos Park, with exotic birds in  subtropical gardens; and Sioux City, a fun-packed Western theme park.

Lanzarote yacht charter itinerary

Set sails and explore the 4th largest of the Canary Islands.  Although it has no trees, there is no lack of visitors, due to its  amazing shapes and stunning colors of its volcanic landscapes. Despite  low rainfall, crops flourish in its rich black volcanic soil. This yacht  charter destination claims to be the most family-oriented place.  Sailors come here mostly not for nightlife and loud fiestas, but for  tranquility and relaxation. They can find both: either sunbathing on  fine beaches and skin diving in eerie emerald-colored lagoons, or  exploring the most impressive volcanic sites in the Montanas del Fuego  (Fire Mountains) and taking camel rides across the mountains.

Sailing to Fuerteventura

It is the second largest of the Canary Islands, after Tenerife,  and the most sparsely populated: it’s 69,500 inhabitants are  outnumbered by goats. Just 60 miles (100 km) off the Atlantic coast off  Morocco, the island is under constant attacks by coastal winds. No  wonder that every summer the island hosts the windsurfing and kite  boarding World Cup.

The island used to be densely wooded, but European settlers cut down  the timber for shipbuilding. Now the only significant income for the  islanders is tourism, though it is not at its high peak yet. However,  sun-lovers are beginning to flock to its more than 150 pristine beaches.  It is one of few islands where it will be easy to find privacy and  seclusion. The island is popular with water sports fans and naturalists,  as well.

Cuisine of the Canary Islands is incredibly unique, because it  uses the most unusual exotic fruit and vegetables and seafood, unknown  to most of us: wreck fish, damselfish, dentex, parrot-fish.

Over the centuries the local cuisine has been under Spanish,  Portuguese and North African influence, but it has managed to retain its  main feature - simplicity and freshness. Delicacies, like lapas  (limpets), are available only for a few months during summer, and are  served simply grilled (a la plancha). Other types of fish are usually  fried, baked in salt crust or dried in the sun. Meats, like pork or  beef, are prepared according to the ancient local tradition.

The islanders grow a certain type of potato unknown elsewhere and are  proud to deliver its favorite dish - "papas arrugadas" (wrinkly  potatoes), made by boiling potatoes in their skins in very salty water,  sometimes even in seawater. One of many Canarian creations is "soap de  pescados tinerfena: it is Tenerife fish soup of sea bass and potatoes,  seasoned with saffron and cumin. There are so many more dishes to try  here: succulent tropical fruits, delicious honey pastries, traditional  cheeses, roasted maize meals, etc.

Where to rent a boat in Lanzarote?

Renting a boat in Lanzarote , or anywhere else, is very similar to renting a car or any other vehicle. So, it’s crucial to always do so through a reputable and legal company or platform. Avoid renting a boat from an individual without a contract, insurance, or any proper documentation, as this is both dangerous and illegal, potentially resulting in significant fines.

One of the top platforms you can use to rent a boat in Lanzarote is SamBoat . This platform connects boat owners with renters, ensuring that all available boats meet specific requirements, are safe, and adhere to environmental standards. Moreover, the rental process is entirely legal, so you have nothing to worry about.

What do you need to rent a boat in Lanzarote?

To hire a boat in Lanzarote , you may need a permit or license, depending on the size and power of the boat. If you don’t possess a license, alternatives include renting a smaller and less powerful boat or opting for a rental with a skipper.

Rent a boat in Lanzarote without a license

You can operate a rental boat in Lanzarote without a license if the boat is less than 20 feet in length and has a maximum power of 15 HP, which typically applies to smaller boats.

Sailboat rental, self drive boat hire lanzarote

If you want a larger boat with more power and you lack a license, you have the option to hire a boat in Lanzarote with a skipper . In this case, you won’t face any limitations as the skipper will be responsible for managing the boat at all times.

Rent a boat in Lanzarote with a license

If you have a license, you have the option to rent a boat in Lanzarote without a skipper. It’s essential to note that there are different types of licenses, each authorizing you to operate boats with specific characteristics. Here’s a breakdown of the boating license categories and what they allow you to do:

  • Navigation License : This is the most basic license, allowing you to handle boats up to 20 feet in length with no power limit. However, navigation is restricted to daylight hours and a maximum distance of 2 miles from the coast.
  • Basic Navigation Pattern : With this license, you can operate boats up to 26 feet in length with no power limit. Navigation is permitted both day and night but within a maximum distance of 5 miles from the coast.
  • Recreational Boat Pattern (PER) : This license enables you to handle boats up to 50 feet in length with no power limit. Day and night navigation is allowed, with a maximum distance of 12 miles from the coast.

Yacht rental, boat hire lanzarote playa blanca

  • Yacht Skipper License : This license allows you to manage boats up to 78 feet in length without a power limit. Both day and night navigation are permitted, with a range of up to 150 miles from the coast.
  • Yacht Captain License : This is the most comprehensive license, granting you the ability to operate any type of boat without length or power restrictions. Day and night navigation are allowed, and there is no limit on the distance from the coast.

Please take note that these are the boating licenses issued by Spain. If you’re from a different European country, you can probably apply for an International Certificate of Competence (ICC) to supplement your existing boating license. Similarly, for individuals from the United States, obtaining an International Sailing License and Credentials (SLC) certificate is an option.

If you hold any of these licenses, ensure that the rental boat in Lanzarote aligns with the limitations specified by your license.

Types of boat hire in Lanzarote

There are various types of rental boats in Lanzarote , each suitable for different activities and passenger capacities.

Keep in mind that if you plan to hire a boat in Lanzarote without a skipper, you must possess the appropriate license corresponding to the boat’s characteristics. Additionally, only the person holding the license is permitted to operate and pilot the boat.

Sailboat rentals in Lanzarote, the best option for a boat trip

Sailboats are the perfect choice for groups of 6 to 8 people, offering a serene sailing experience along the entire coast of Lanzarote. Whether you wish to watch whales and dolphins in Lanzarote , indulge in snorkeling or diving, or simply enjoy the sun and the tranquility of the ocean, a sailboat provides an ideal way to do so.

Sailboat, private catamaran lanzarote

It’s important to note that while there are small sailboats that can be operated without a license, handling a sailboat is not a task to be taken lightly. If you plan to rent a sailboat in Lanzarote with the intention of being the skipper, it’s better to have experience with this type of boat and possess basic navigation knowledge. As a vessel powered by the force of the wind, navigating a sailboat can be challenging, even risky, for those without prior experience. Therefore, I recommend renting a sailboat with a skipper if you don’t feel fully prepared to handle it, whether you have a license or not.

Catamaran boat hire in Lanzarote, a fun option for groups and families

A private catamaran in Lanzarote is an ideal boat for families, offering a remarkably smooth and stable sailing experience. With some catamarans accommodating up to 12 people, it proves versatile for various group sizes.

Catamaran rental, boat hire lanzarote puerto del carmen

This type of boat is perfect if your plan includes exploring the coast, making stops at scenic beaches in Lanzarote , and engaging in activities like diving or snorkeling. Just remember that the catamaran’s design allows for navigation in shallow water areas.

It’s important to note that when renting a catamaran in Lanzarote , having a skipper is mandatory. Given its unique characteristics as a sailing boat, handling a catamaran can be challenging, making the presence of an experienced skipper essential.

Motorboat rental in Lanzarote, a small and practical option

Opting for a motorboat can be an excellent choice, especially if you don’t have a license and want a compact vessel for exploring the coast freely and visiting some of the best beaches in Lanzarote . Motorboats are easy to handle, making them suitable even for those without experience or navigation knowledge.

Zodiac boat, boat hire playa blanca

You can easily find rental boats in Lanzarote that are less than 20 feet in length and have less than 15 HP. However, there are also larger and more powerful options, some even equipped with small cabins for overnight stays, which would require a license. Be extra careful when selecting a rental boat, and pay close attention to its specifications.

These boats are designed for easy maneuverability around the island, allowing you to disembark practically anywhere. While they offer opportunities for water sports and various activities, these boats may not be the best choice for whale or dolphin watching, as the noise generated by the engine can often disturb these marine species.

Other types of boat rentals in Lanzarote

Apart from choosing the type of boat, another crucial decision when renting a boat in Lanzarote is whether to opt for a skipper, go without one, or have a guide on board.

Hire a boat in Lanzarote without a skipper

Choosing to hire a boat in Lanzarote without a skipper means that either you or one of your companions will be responsible for managing the boat and deciding on the itinerary.

Zodiac boat rental, small boat hire lanzarote without skipper

To rent a boat in Lanzarote without a skipper , you need to meet one of two requirements: either rent a boat less than 20 feet in length with a maximum power of 15 HP, for which no license is necessary, or possess the license corresponding to the type of boat rental. Additionally, if you are planning to rent a sailboat or catamaran, it’s advisable to have basic experience and knowledge in navigation due to the complexity of handling these vessels.

Hire a boat in Lanzarote with a skipper

Opting to hire a boat in Lanzarote with a skipper means you’ll have the expertise of a licensed sailing professional accompanying you. In this scenario, you can choose any type of boat without limitations, as the skipper will be solely responsible for navigation and the one handling the controls.

Sailboat rental, boat hire lanzarote puerto del carmen

This option is undoubtedly one of the best if you lack a license or experience in navigation. It’s also one of the safest ways to sail, particularly on sailboats and catamarans, which can be more complex to handle. However, it’s worth noting that renting a boat in Lanzarote with a skipper tends to be more expensive than opting for a boat without a skipper.

Hire a boat in Lanzarote with a guide

Another option for renting a boat in Lanzarote is with a guide. This is the best choice if you have a license but lack navigation experience and want to be accompanied in case any issues arise during the trip.

In this case, either you or someone in your group will be responsible for the controls and navigation, with the guide present for support and assistance in case you need help or have any questions at any point in the journey.

Lanzarote boat rental prices

The cost of renting a boat in Lanzarote depends primarily on factors such as dates, the type of boat, its characteristics, the number of available boats, and whether or not a skipper is included. Motorboats are among the most budget-friendly options for boat rentals in Lanzarote , although the price can vary based on size and power.

Speedboat rental, lanzarote rent a boat

The smallest motorboats, with a length of less than 20 feet and 15 HP, can be rented starting from €160 per day. Operating this type of boat doesn’t require a license or skipper, providing you with the freedom to explore the coast of Lanzarote without any problems.

For more powerful motorboats, you typically need a Navigation License, and the price starts at €550 per day. There’s also an option to rent a motorboat in Lanzarote with a skipper, but this comes at a significantly higher price.

Sailboats are a popular choice in Lanzarote, offering a variety of rental options.

Sailboat in Canary Islands, private catamaran lanzarote

You can rent a sailboat in Lanzarote starting at €400 per day, or €500 if you opt for a skipper. Keep in mind that a minimum rental period of 7 days is usually required, so expect to pay at least €2,800. To rent this type of boat, a license, as well as experience and knowledge in navigation, are necessary. Alternatively, you can choose to rent it with a skipper.

Catamaran rentals in Lanzarote start from €280 per day, including the skipper, with a minimum rental duration of 7 days. This brings the total weekly rental cost to €1,960. I highly recommend finalizing your booking in advance as the availability of catamarans may be limited compared to sailboats.

Hourly boat hires in Lanzarote

While sailboats and catamarans typically have a minimum rental period of 7 days, you have the option to rent a boat in Lanzarote by the hour, with a minimum duration of half a day.

The half-day option is ideal if you want to explore all the attractions in Lanzarote and dedicate a morning or afternoon to activities such as diving or snorkeling. Additionally, if you’re in a group, this option might be more cost-effective than some of the popular boat excursions in Lanzarote .

It’s important to note that not all boats offer half-day rentals, so make sure to check out the SamBoat website to find all the available options. For your reference, here’s a table showcasing three different hourly rental options.

Important ports in Lanzarote with boat rentals

If you’re set on renting a boat in Lanzarote , you might be wondering where on the island this is possible. Below, I’ll share the ports that offer boat hires in Lanzarote :

Boat hire in Playa Blanca (Marina Rubicón)

The Marina Rubicón , located in Playa Blanca in the south of the island, is one of the most popular sites for renting a boat in Lanzarote . This location offers a variety of options and is surrounded by a beautiful environment, perfect for an enjoyable sailing experience.

Playa Blanca, where to rent a private catamaran in lanzarote

From the port of Playa Blanca, you can easily access some of the most stunning beaches on the island, including the renowned Papagayo Beach , situated in the Los Ajaches Natural Monument. I also suggest sailing west from this port to explore Timanfaya National Park and continuing north to see the Chinijo Archipelago. Moreover, there’s a short distance of just over 0.60 nautical miles between the Risco de Famara in Lanzarote and Caleta de Sebo in La Graciosa. If you plan to have the boat for several days and wish to circumnavigate the entire coast, you can easily travel between these two islands.

Boat hires in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote , typically start at €420 per day. There is a wide availability of motorboats, sailboats, and catamarans throughout the year, ensuring you can find the vessel that best suits your preferences. However, if you are traveling during the high season, I recommend booking well in advance to secure your desired boat.

Boat rentals in Puerto Calero (Puerto Calero Marina)

The Puerto Calero Marina is another excellent option for renting a boat in Lanzarote . Just keep in mind that the selection of boats here may not be as extensive as in Playa Blanca, with sailboats being the primary choice available.

Puerto Calero, a place to hire a boat in lanzarote

Sailboat rentals in Puerto Calero start at €400 per day, with a minimum rental period of 7 days, bringing the total minimum cost to €2,800. If you require a skipper, the rental price may increase. Given the required skill level to handle these types of boats, I strongly recommend against operating a sailboat without experience and knowledge in navigation.

Puerto Calero is an ideal location for boat rentals in Lanzarote if you plan to explore the east coast of the island. You can head south to navigate along the pristine beaches of the Los Ajaches Natural Monument until you reach Playa de Papagayo. Alternatively, you can travel north to visit Puerto del Carmen , Arrecife, and other points of interest. Moreover, the proximity to the north of the island enables easy access to La Graciosa, located just over 0.60 nautical miles away.

Boat rentals in Marina Lanzarote (Arrecife)

Another viable option for boat hires in Lanzarote is Marina Lanzarote , situated in Arrecife . While the selection here may not be as extensive as in Playa Blanca, you can still find both sailboats and catamarans.

Arrecife, another place to rent a boat in lanzarote

Despite the limited availability, prices start at €280 per day, which adds up to €1,960 per week. Keep in mind that sailboats and catamarans typically require a minimum rental period of one week.

From Marina Lanzarote, you can explore various beaches and navigate along the entire east coast. I recommend venturing to the Costa Teguise area by heading north. If time permits, you could even reach the Risco de Famara and, from there, extend your journey to La Graciosa.

Places to sail with your Lanzarote boat rental

With a boat rental in Lanzarote , you have the opportunity to explore the entire coast freely and without constraints, limited only by the maximum distance allowed by your license or the skipper’s license.

This is an excellent chance to reach some of the best beaches in Lanzarote by sea, such as the stunning Papagayo Beach to the south, the virgin Caletón Blanco Beach to the north, or Famara Beach, surrounded by cliffs and renowned for its excellent surfing conditions. Hiring a boat in Lanzarote is particularly advantageous for accessing beaches from the sea, providing increased maneuverability compared to other modes of transportation.

Papagayo Beach, private catamaran lanzarote

Additionally, you can disembark in some of Lanzarote’s notable coastal towns, each offering unique attractions. Puerto del Carmen boasts a vibrant nightlife, Playa Blanca features beautiful beaches, Arrecife serves as the administrative and commercial center, and Costa Teguise offers a plethora of water activities. If you opt for a sailboat or catamaran rental, venture a bit further from the coast to search for cetaceans and enjoy watching dolphins and whales in Lanzarote all year round. Alternatively, you can rent a boat with a skipper for this excursion, as they are probably better familiar with the areas frequented by these marine animals.

If you border the coast of Lanzarote, I recommend heading to the western region to witness the entirety of Timanfaya National Park , home to some of the most famous volcanoes in Lanzarote .

La Graciosa, speed boat hire lanzarote

Where to rent a boat in Lanzarote, Canary Islands

You can also consider a trip to La Graciosa since the northernmost point of Lanzarote, Risco de Famara, is just over 0.60 nautical miles from Caleta de Sebo in La Graciosa. This short distance allows you to reach the island with any boat and license and enjoy its paradisiacal beaches, abundant nature, and breathtaking landscapes.

Depending on your boat type and license, you might also venture to Fuerteventura , located 9 nautical miles away. A minimum requirement for this journey is the PER (Recreational Boat Pattern) license. This is a great plan, especially if you wish to visit Isla de Lobos , situated between Lanzarote and Fuerteventura, a short distance from the port of Corralejo .

Things to do on a Lanzarote rental boat

If you’ve decided to hire a boat in Lanzarote , understanding what activities are allowed on board is crucial. Each boat owner may have their own specific rules, and certain activities, such as parties, may not be permitted by some.

Permitted activities on Lanzarote rental boats

You can rent a boat in Lanzarote to explore the island’s coastline and uncover its hidden coves and pristine beaches. Island hopping to other Canary Islands is also an option, provided you adhere to the maximum distance limits specified by your navigation license. You can also engage in various water activities like snorkeling, diving, and whale watching, as long as these activities don’t pose risks to passengers, damage the environment, or harm the boat.

Whale watching tour, boat hire lanzarote playa blanca

Some boats come equipped with sleeping spaces, a living room, a kitchen, and a bathroom, essentially offering an on-water apartment experience.

With the boat owner’s approval, you can host parties on board. However, it’s crucial to do so responsibly, ensuring the safety of passengers and preventing any damage to the boat or the surrounding environment.

Prohibited activities on Lanzarote rental boats

Some boat owners explicitly prohibit parties or events on board. If you plan to rent a boat in Lanzarote for celebrations such as bachelor parties or birthdays, it’s crucial to inquire with the owner beforehand or carefully review the rental conditions to ensure compliance.

In cases where hosting a party on the boat is not permitted, you can explore the option of disembarking in one of the island’s towns and enjoying the vibrant nightlife at one of the best nightclubs in Lanzarote .

Heineken Bar, a place to visit in a lanzarote rental boat

On a rental boat in Lanzarote , engaging in illegal activities or actions that could harm the local flora, fauna, or the environment is strictly prohibited. Additionally, activities that generate loud music or excessive noise, potentially disturbing the area’s wildlife, are not allowed.

Compliance with navigation rules is imperative, and operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or other substances is strictly forbidden. It is also essential to follow the directives of the skipper to ensure a safe and responsible boating experience.

When is the best time to hire a boat in Lanzarote?

For the best time to rent a boat in Lanzarote , I personally prefer the period from May to October. During these months, you can enjoy calm and pleasant sailing conditions. However, from November to April, the winds become more unpredictable. If you plan to rent a boat during this period, you will definitely need more experience and knowledge in navigation, or you can choose a rental with a skipper.

Other tips for renting a boat in Lanzarote

Now, here are some tips to ensure you have a fantastic time while renting a boat in Lanzarote :

  • Always wear sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses to protect yourself from prolonged sun exposure.
  • Bring sufficient water and food on board in case you need it.
  • If you plan to spend the night on board, pack warm clothing , as nights at sea can be cold.
  • Wear comfortable, rubber-soled shoes or go barefoot on board. Some skippers may prefer passengers to be barefoot.
  • Stow all objects securely , and ensure the deck is clear of anything that could fall into the water.
  • Book your boat rental well in advance , particularly during high season.

  • Carefully read the details of each boat before making a reservation , and check if a license is required to operate it. Contact the owner through the SamBoat website if you have any questions.
  • Conduct all rental and procedural activities through the SamBoat platform so the company can handle any issues or incidents that may arise.
  • Avoid touching any equipment on the boat without permission from the skipper or the person responsible for its management . Always follow their instructions for safe navigation.
  • Refrain from jumping into the water while the boat is moving , as it can be extremely dangerous. Only jump if the ladder is in place.
  • Always bring some extra money to cover any additional expenses .
  • Do not throw anything into the water ; the sea is not a trash can!
  • Rent a boat in Lanzarote with people you get along with, trust, and can have fun with since it is a confined space where you will be living together.

I am confident that you will truly enjoy the experience, as the waters of the Canary Islands are perfect for a boat rental. Don’t hesitate to hire a boat in Lanzarote and make the most of your unique holiday experience.

Top 10 Things To Do And See In Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

lanzarote segelyacht charter

Located about 400km east of Moscow , Nizhny Novgorod is one of the most important centers of cultural, economic, and political activity in European Russia . Widely considered, after St Petersburg and Moscow, to be Russia’s ‘third city’, Nizhny is fast becoming a hot-spot for Russian and global tourists alike, attracted by the city’s up-and-coming reputation and stunning landscape.

The view over Nizhny Novgorod from the city’s Kremlin walls

The Kremlin

Jutting out from the cliffs that overlook the meeting point of the great Volga and Oka rivers, Nizhny Novgorod ‘s ancient Kremlin boasts of some of the best views in the city. Designed by an Italian architect, the 13 magnificent towers and the 12 meter high walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin date back to 1500. On this very spot in 1612, heroes of Russian history Kuzma Minin and Count Dmitry Pozharsky defeated the invading Polish army in extraordinary circumstances. This moment has become legend in Russian history and a statue in honor of these two lies at the foot of St Basil’s in Moscow. The Kremlin is the historic center of the city where you will find an art museum and the lovely Cathedral of the Archangel Michael, as well as a striking monument to those that fought in the Second World War and its flame eternally flickering on in their memory.

Ride on the cable car

Completed in 2012, taking a ride on Nizhny Novgorod’s cablecar has fast become a favorite activity of tourists. The trip offers unparalleled opportunities to view the city’s gorgeous natural landscape from this bird’s eye position. The 3660m long gondola lift connects Nizhny to the town of Bor and stretches across the Volga River for 900 panoramic meters. The gondola acts as both a convenient means of transportation and a fantastic sight-seeing expedition – come at sunset for a golden-bathed view of the river and surrounding landscape.

The house-museum of Maxim Gorky

During the Soviet era, Nizhny Novgorod, birthplace of celebrated Russian writer Maxim Gorky , was renamed ‘Gorky’ in honor of this national hero. This home has been preserved in a state as accurate as possible to how it was left by Gorky and is so successful in this that it would seem as though the writer still lived there. The museum ‘s historic interiors and authentic furnishings will transport you back to the 1900s and the creative world of this icon of Russian literature. Come and make the most of this unique experience to delve into the childhood world of this Russian father of social realism. Museum booklets and guided tours are available in English.

Nizhegorodskaya Yarmarka

A yarmarka is something akin to a fair, and this historic former market place was restored in 1991, the site now playing home to a superb modern exhibition center. The city’s yarmarka plays host to international events, fairs, and conventions. In 2011, for the 20 year anniversary of the fair’s refounding, a vast array of exhibitions were organized, attended by thousands including members of the British royal family, Vladimir Putin, Mikhail Gorbachev , and Margaret Thatcher . The fair is not only a buzzing center of business and culture, it is also one of the city’s most impressive sights.

One of Nizhny Novgorod’s stunning parks

The Nizhegorodsky State Art Museum

Located inside Nizhny Novgorod’s ancient Kremlin, the building that houses this art gallery was once the home of the governor of the city. The exhibits are wide-ranging and include everything from 14th century religious icons, to work by 20th century contemporary Russian masters. Particularly dazzling is the collection by Russian painter Nicholas Roerich. There is also a large arts and crafts collection which demonstrates the exquisite handiwork of Russian artisans throughout history.

1. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street

Bolshaya pokrovskaya street.

An excellent spot to soak up the best of the city’s atmosphere, this pedestrian street lies in the heart of Nizhny Novgorod. The beautiful Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street is constantly buzzing and provides new and exciting sights at every turn. Gorgeous buildings and fountains tower on all sides – showcasing the best of Nizhny’s architecture. Quirky shop fronts and lovely local souvenirs will have you pausing at every window while the charming cafés will draw you in with their tempting aromas. Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street transforms by night into a vibrant hub of evening activity and is the place to come for a night-out in the city. The bars of this street are favorites with Nizhny Novgorod’s student population.

The Chkalov Staircase

An idyllic spot from which to watch the sun’s rays set over the city, this monumental creation was constructed by the Soviet government and is unique to the city of Nizhny Novgorod. The staircase derives its name from pilot Valery Chkalov who, in 1937, became the first man to fly from Moscow to Vancouver through the North Pole. A monument to Chkalov stands at the top of the stairs. The construction of the staircase cost almost 8 million rubles – an immense sum at the time. Over 1,500 stairs connect the city center with the river embankment – making Chkalov’s landmark the longest flight of stairs along the Volga. Nowadays the staircase is a favorite meeting place and relaxation spot for locals.

The Rukavishnikov Estate Museum

The Rukavishnikovs were a family of immensely wealthy merchants originating from the region around Nizhny Novgorod. This superbly restored palace , their former home, has been transformed into a museum of Russian history and gives a realistic snap-shot of life for the wealthy under tsarist rule. The ornate 19th century interiors and exquisite facade are sure to dazzle with their beauty while the lush green of the surrounding natural landscape provides a tranquil getaway from the city center. Lavish furnishings, priceless antiques, and glistening gold will transport you back in time to a world of balls, carriages, banquets, and tsars. Join the world of Russian noble ladies and gentlemen for a day in this stunning palace.

The memorial statue to Valery Chkalov by the Chkalov Staircase

The Sakharov Museum

Nizhny Novgorod’s Sakharov Museum is dedicated to dissident Russian scientist Andrei Sakharov . The nuclear physicist and human rights activist was exiled for six years to the very flat in which the museum is now housed. Sakharov’s support for civil reform and improved human rights in the Soviet Union earned him harsh persecution from the Russian government, but also, in 1975, a Nobel Peace Prize . Sakharov was incarcerated here until 1986 when a KGB officer arrived to install a phone in the flat. Just after the phone was installed it began to ring: the caller was Mikhail Gorbachev, ringing Sakharov to inform him of his release. This phone is now one of the museum’s most treasured artifacts.

The stunning architecture of Nizhny Novgorod

The National Centre of Contemporary Art

Inside the walls of Nizhny’s Kremlin can also be found one of the best modern art galleries in Russia. Linked to galleries in both St Petersburg and Moscow, this top-ranking exhibition center houses regularly changing displays of both Russian and international art as well as interactive exhibits and a media library. Progress is also on-going of adding a concert hall, extending the exhibition areas, and creating a restaurant. These additions aim to make art contemporary, not simply a detached, unrelatable concept, but bring it closer to the Russian people.

The Top 12 Things to Do in Nizhny Novgorod, Russia

Take a first-rate trip to Russia's fifth city

Ershov_Maks/Getty Images

Although it's Russia's fifth-largest city, you could be forgiven for never having heard of Nizhny Novgorod. Notwithstanding that another Russian city is simply called " Novgorod ," the current name of the city just doesn't have a memorable ring to it. (By contrast, its name during the Soviet years — Gorky, like the famous author — was much more iconic.) At any rate, this city of just over a million around six hours east of Moscow is more than worth a visit. These are just 12 reasons why!

Tour the Kremlin's 13 Towers

Like most every other city in Russia, Nizhny Novgorod is home to a Kremlin. (The word "kremlin" means "citadel" in Russian, and has nothing to do with the modern Russian government) One thing that elevated the Kremlin of Nizhny Novgorod above others in Russia (with the possible exception of the Moscow Kremlin and one or two others), however, is the fact that its wall has 13 towers. During the summer months, at least one free walking tour per day operates from the main entrance of Nizhny Novgorod's Kremlin.

Climb Russia's Longest Staircase

Named for one of the most famous Russian pilots of the early aviation age (Valery Chkalov), the Chkalov Stairs connect two of Nizhny Novgorod's public squares, which sit on the upper and lower embankments of the Volga River, respectively. Built in 1943 (during the period when Nizhny Novgorod was known as Gorky), the Chkalov Stairs currently have the distinction of being the longest staircase in Russia.

Go Wild at Limpopo Zoo

One thing that surprises many travelers to Nizhny Novgorod is how amazing its zoo, colloquially known as Limpopo is. In addition to being home to a tropical botanical garden (which, not surprisingly, is indoors), the zoo hosts a variety of reptiles, mammals and birds. There's also a small sculpture park on the grounds of Nizhny Novgorod's zoo, including both original and replica pieces.

Shop (or Just Stroll) Along a Storied High Street

Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street has been the de-facto "Main Street" of Nizhny Novgorod for more than 200 years. Well, minus the Soviet Union period, during which the cafes that once (and now) lined it became somewhat worthless, since intellectual conversations were basically forbidden. These days, you can come here for a cup of Russian tea then shop at the dozens of boutiques you'll find on either side of the street.

Sun Yourself at the Spit

Nizhny Novgorod sits at the confluence of the Oka and Volga Rivers, with the triangle of land at the point they meet being known as the Nizhny Novgorod Spit. Ignoring the unfortunate double-meaning of its name for a moment, this is actually a wonderful place to get a tan, if it's summer in the city and the sun happens to be shining. Even if not, photographers will enjoy a trip here for a view of the Kremlin and city center across the Volga.

Marvel at the Open-Air Museum of Rozhdestvenskaya Street

Like Bolshaya Pokrovskaya Street, Rozhdestvenskaya Street has long been one of the most important streets in Nizhny Novgorod. However, while the former has become a primarily commercial artery in recent decades, the charm of the latter is in its well-maintained buildings, which hearken back to the mid-18th century. In fact, some locals go so far as to consider Rozhdestvenskaya Street an "open-air museum."

Ride Russia's Newest Cable Car

Russian investment in infrastructure isn't quite as dramatic as that of, say, China, but the Federation has nonetheless built a selection of interesting and modern transportation systems since the fall of the USSR. Among them is the just-opened cable car, which travels from the center of Nizhny Novgorod over the Volga River to suburban Bor. At any rate, a ride over the river and back is definitely worth inclusion on your list of things to do in Nizhny Novgorod.

Taste Traditional Shchi Soup

Shchi is one of Nizhy Novgorod's most delicious local specialties, available in most every local restaurant that serves Russian food. From above, a bowl of shchi seems incredibly complicated, with a colorful palette that suggests the inclusion of dozens of diverse ingredients. In fact, the magic of shchi is in its simplicity. Building on the traditional pan-Russian recipe of cabbage, pork fat and salt (yes, just three ingredients), locals in Nizhny Novgorod sometimes add minced meat or egg whites as bonus items, then top the tangy soup with a dollop of sour cream.

Survey Amazing Russian Orthodox Architecture

Think the only amazing Russian Orthodox churches are in Moscow and St. Petersburg? Think again. Nizhny Novgorod boasts several amazing examples of Russian Orthodox architecture. From the brilliant golde domes John the Baptist Cathedral near the Volga River, to the expansive grounds of 14th-century Pechersky Ascension Monastery, Nizhny Novgorod is an architecture buff's dream!

Take a Look Back in Time

Nizhny Novgorod's historical center is relatively large and well-preserved, but a stroll (or 10) through it isn't the only way to get a feel for the city's centuries-long past. Head to the Russian Museum of Photography, which not only showcases a variety of images of Nizhny Novgorod that date back a century or even longer, but also spotlights the equipment Russian photographers have used throughout the years, and notable figures in Russia's photography history as well.

Visit the Convent from the Movie "Salt"

You'd be forgiven if you've entirely forgotten the 2010 film "Salt." However, if you remember any destination from this spy thriller, it's likely the facade of Makaryev Convent, which is located within day-trip distance of Nizhny Novgorod. Having served as a monastery from its consecration in the early 15th century up until the beginning of the Russian Revolution, Makaryev became a convent after the fall of the Soviet Union , and is now home to 22 nuns.

Take an Excursion to a 12th-Century Tea Town

Another worthwhile day trip from Nizhny Novgorod is to the town of Gorodets, which sits about an hour to its northwest. With a history dating back to the 12th century, Gorodets boasts an interesting array of architecture and museums, including one dedicated to samovars.
