The Pedigree and Performance of Riva’s 66’ Ribelle

  • By Patrick Sciacca
  • Updated: January 15, 2019

riva 66 ribelle

Pre-dawn rain faded as the sun split the horizon in Cannes, France. The late summer’s bright light reflected off the Riva 66’ Ribelle’s sapphire-blue hull, illuminating the deep hue at quayside. It was an ocean blue, the kind of color I only see when I’m cruising offshore, where the fathom depths have commas. It was opulent. And it set the stage for all that followed on this sporty cruiser built in Sarnico, Italy. The 66’s lines, inspired by the builder’s 76’ Perseo, have movement. The yacht seems to run while sitting still. This visual accomplishment is in part thanks to an aggressive bow design. Her entry is like a fillet knife: fine and honed to teach the sea a lesson when it acts up. Gleaming stainless-steel rails wrap around the yacht, complementing the straight-edge sheer line from bow to stern. The stainless steel also accents the hull color while adding to the yacht’s sinewy, athletic appearance.

riva 66 ribelle

She’s set up as a flybridge yacht yet appears more of an express cruiser at first glance. Her profile is set low thanks to that sheer line, and she has nearly full-length hullside glass with a raked hardtop, making her reminiscent of a sprinter set in the blocks, itching for the starter gun to go off.

And the gun went off.

Twin 1,550 hp MAN diesels in a V-drive setup roared to life as my test 66’ Ribelle got up and out quickly. She tracked true, and she felt stable and effortless as we cruised across a placid Gulf of Napoule. As the engines spooled up to 2,320 rpm (within 20 rpm of their rating), she hit an average 36.8-knot top-end, which is just 0.2 knots shy of her builder’s projected wide-open-throttle speed. Cruise speed was 31.5 knots at 2,000 rpm, within 1.5 knots of the builder’s 33-knot expected number. My test 66’ Ribelle was fully loaded: 1,004 gallons of fuel, 188 gallons of water and a dozen people on board. The yacht’s full-load displacement is 102,515 pounds.

riva 66 ribelle

At wide-open throttle, those MAN diesels burned about 160 gph. Considering a 10 percent reserve, the yacht’s fuel capacity gives the 66’ Ribelle a 207 nm range at top speed. At cruise, the motors consume 120 gph, increasing range to 237 nautical miles. Drop the throttles back to 1,800 rpm, and the 66 makes 28 knots while the diesels consume 99 gph, increasing range to 255 nautical miles.

But this vessel is about driving, not long-range voyaging. It’s a 66-foot-long sports car on the sea, a design approach that makes sense when you consider that Piero Ferrari (yes, that Ferrari) was involved in the creation process, along with Officina Italiana Design and the Ferretti Group’s engineering department. The yacht runs like she is being chased. She carves S-turns like an Olympic slalom skier, and she offers serious driving thrills.

I drove her from the lower helm, which is to port and forward of the salon. There’s a bench seat for two, but given the boat’s agility, I liked standing and feeling the movement under my feet. An electric hatch overhead opened when fresh air was desired. Single-lever MAN controls fell right under the palm of my right hand as I eased the throttles forward. A MAN-Böening integrated monitoring system provided vital engine data on flush-mounted displays, with the helm console framed in stainless steel.

The 66’ Ribelle planed easily. Her steering was real-time responsive, and the yacht had a moderate inboard heel on hard-over turns. She has beefy mullions in the corner of the raked hardtop that restrict visibility when turning hard over, but the flybridge helm has clean sightlines in all directions.

riva 66 ribelle

Inside, the yacht’s interior is luxurious. High-end leathers from Penelopeoggi and Mastrotto work in concert with richly toned mahogany, stainless-steel accents, and light-tone upholstery from Mariaflora, creating a contemporary, inviting style. House-length windows, a cockpit door that disappears belowdecks, and 6-foot-7-inch salon headroom bring in light and create a sense of spaciousness.

Low-back, L-shaped salon seating to starboard keeps guests within earshot of the helmsman while offering unobstructed views of the sea. An electric high-low table adjusts for morning coffee, lunch or afternoon cocktails. With the cockpit door stowed, the space from the transom sun pad to the helm becomes an indoor-outdoor entertainment zone.

The 66’ Ribelle is arranged for cruising families, with three staterooms and three heads. The master is full-beam amidships with 6-foot-7-inch headroom and an en suite head, and offers ocean views out the hullside windows that flank the centerline berth. A settee is to port for time on the hook with a book.

riva 66 ribelle

The forepeak VIP has a step-up berth and en suite head, and the third guest stateroom is abaft the VIP to port, with twin berths and an en suite head. This third head also acts as the day-head with companionway access.

As sleek as the Riva 66’ Ribelle’s exterior looks, her interior is equally impressive, perhaps rivaled only by the yacht’s performance on the salt. She is a chic sport cruiser with a thoroughbred’s heart.

Foredeck Fun

The Riva 66’ Ribelle’s foredeck sun-pad space measures about 75 square feet, ensuring that everyone on board has a spot to catch some rays or enjoy sundowners on the hook.

Ship to Shore

This yacht’s transom garage accommodates a Williams Sportjet 345. The Sportjet measures 11 feet 3 inches length overall, has a 5-foot-8-inch beam and fits five guests on board. Power is a 90 hp BRP Rotax ACE engine, and top speed is about 40 knots. Additionally, the tender garage can house a Seabob.

For those looking for a nearly roll-free ride on the 66’ Ribelle, a Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer is available.

Reinventing Iconic: On Board the Riva 110 Dolcevita

Iconic style on a larger scale – Riva brings the feel of its famous runabouts to its 33.5-metre superyacht. Risa Merl learns how...

Since Brigitte Bardot was first spotted on board her Riva Super Florida Nounours off Saint-Tropez in the 1960s, the Riva brand has been synonymous with glamour, speed and classic good looks. It’s a heady combination that has earned the Italian builder a loyal fan base. Vintage Rivas are so legendary, in fact, they are some of the few yachts to increase in value as they age – the last wooden-hulled Aquarama to be built was sold at auction for $975,000 (£763,000) nearly 40 years after its launch.

The question was, as Riva moved into building fibreglass motor yachts in the 2000s, could the style, grace – and success – of a classic Riva ever be replicated on a larger scale? The builder’s latest fibreglass flagship, the 33.5 metre 110' Dolcevita, is specifically designed in the hopes of answering this query with a resounding yes.

“Bringing the iconic Riva styling into a larger boat was the target since the beginning of the project,” says Giordano Pellacani, head of sales and marketing at Riva, under the Ferretti Group umbrella. “If you look at the previous [large] Riva models, they were not exactly in that style.” The Dolcevita is a step up from the 29.9 metre Corsaro model that, while good-looking in its own right, did not carry forward the trademark Riva styling to the same extent that the Dolcevita aims to.

Riva embarked on a thorough review and development process, spending twice as long in the planning phase as they usually would on a project. “We interviewed many customers and found they wanted something that reminded them of smaller Rivas, with attention poured into our classic details – but on a megayacht,” Pellacani says, referring to Riva’s trademark use of mahogany wood, gleaming stainless steel and rich leathers. These features loom large on the Dolcevita, but with a modern twist. The team at Officina Italiana Design – the exclusive designer of Rivas since 1994 – was inspired by classic Rivas but was careful not to create a retro boat. The new Dolcevita had to perfectly balance modern styling with the timeless luxury that clients associate with Riva.

“Riva design centres around clean, spare lines, resulting in elegant boats,” says the CEO of Officina Italiana Design , Sergio Beretta. “The 110' Dolcevita is in the spirit of Riva tradition. The lines are clean and elegant, including throughout the model’s interior, where the style was personalised to suit the owner’s requirements.” With an integrated flybridge and a silver-grey paint job, the 110' Dolcevita has a sporty look. Gaze closer, however, and you’ll notice sinuous exterior lines that are detailed yet well-balanced, providing just enough handsome Riva styling while meeting the design team’s maxim that less is more. The black windows on the main deck form a continuous band, a feature that defines the exterior but is best appreciated from inside, where such glazing allows for 270-degree views.

“The saloon has unusual windows that run for most of the yacht’s profile, creating a sense of visual space and breadth aft because there is no structure,” says Mauro Micheli, chief designer of Officina Italiana. “From an engineering point of view, it was an interesting challenge. The idea was, how can we give something to owners that no one else has in this size range? You might see windows like this on a much larger yacht, like Vava 2 or Musashi . But how could we create this atmosphere on a smaller yacht? When we told the engineers what we wanted, they said, ‘You’re crazy’.”

To conjure up an open feeling reminiscent of a Riva runabout inside a superyacht was no small feat. Riva’s engineers devised a “spider structure” that allowed for huge windows supported by minuscule mullions. Four transversal and four longitudinal pieces of stainless steel combine to make a frame that is attached to the hull, supporting the stress of the yacht and connecting the hull and superstructure. The result is what Pellacani calls “the crystal palace” – a light-filled interior with seamless windows, remarkable indoor-outdoor continuity and panoramic views.

The abundance of glass lets in massive amounts of light to the wood-filled interior, illuminating the high-gloss joinery. “We used a lot of wood, as per Riva tradition, but in this case we went for rosewood,” Micheli says. Rosewood is similar to mahogany, but has darker veining and a dense grain that makes it very durable, and the wood takes a polish well.

For 70 per cent of its boats built these days, Riva uses pre-engineered woods to avoid mistakes, knots or misalignments showing in the veneer. “For Dolcevita, we opted to use real wood and keep the defects in, we wanted to see them, then apply our love of detailing,” Pellacani says. “We use more material this way – because sometimes you need quite a big piece for the furniture – which is reflected in the price point.”

The wood is refined by a team of in-house carpenters, the same craftsmen who work on smaller Rivas. Real wood, in all its natural glory and coated in gleaming varnish, certainly elicits the richness of a classic Riva launch. Deckheads are raised and the ceiling inset with shining rosewood, which gives a warmth to the spacious saloon.

To complement the light-reflecting rosewood, Officina Italiana Design brought in a pale-grey matte finish for the walls, which matches the light grey sofa. The interior has an understated elegance. Classic nautical materials combine with modern furnishings, such as the glass dining room table paired with leather and stainless-steel chairs. “There are a lot of details in leather and stainless steel that is the leitmotif for the interior and exterior,” Micheli says. The Riva branding is signalled in this and in more literal detailing, like the curved silver door handles imprinted with a Riva logo.

Nine Dolcevita hulls have been sold so far, heading off to locations ranging from Asia and the Middle East to Europe and the US. Half of those owners already have a smaller Riva and were looking for something to represent their love of the brand on a bigger scale. Hull five was the first to be seen by the public at the Monaco Yacht Show last September; the first four were delivered quickly and are being enjoyed by their owners. The new offering seems to appeal to both to Riva loyalists and to those looking for interesting amenities in a smaller package.

Feedback from one owner, who was looking for “big boat features but on a smaller scale” inspired Dolcevita’s unusual layout. While nearly every large yacht has the guest passageway to starboard and the crew to port, this Riva has the hallway leading to the full-beam owner’s cabin on the port side.

“We looked at our bigger 40- to 50-metre boats, and one of the things they must have is a dayhead near the main saloon, because owners throw dinner parties and do not want people in the guest cabins,” Pellacani says. “So we decided to have a very large dayhead on the left side of the main deck.” This dayhead is tucked under the port-side superstructure, set in a wide hallway just before the door to the owner’s suite.

Like the saloon, the master cabin is adorned with rosewood, grey soft goods and carpeting, and chocolate-brown leather chairs. Stainless-steel details also decorate the raised ceiling and are used for the wardrobe door handles. A smoked glass wall across from the bed adds depth and conceals a television. This recurrent theme of “Riva details”, reaffirming the yacht’s ties to its heritage, is carried through into the guest cabins as well. Four are found below, with the layout customisable. The owner of hull five opted for three VIPs and one cabin with twins and a Pullman berth. The rosewood details are even seen in the guest bathrooms.

Exterior spaces aim to recreate the feeling of flying jauntily around the harbour on a much smaller Riva. One such space is the foredeck lounge, accessed via a stairway leading forward from the starboard side. This sunpad-laden spot encapsulates the feeling of sprawling out on the back of an Aquarama, but with even more comfort. The foredeck lounge can also be customised to the owner’s wishes: this one has a rumble seat all the way forward, while another Dolcevita has a spa pool built on the bow.

The stylish helm stations bear the hallmarks of a classic Riva with more wood, leather and stainless details. A second helm is found on the sundeck, which also brings in carbon fibre detailing in the hardtop.“The Riva tradition also is for the exterior area to have a lot of details,” Pellacani says. This presented another challenge, as all the exterior elements of the yacht – from the ceiling of the flybridge to the inside of railings to the bases of (fixed) deck furniture – are painted to match the hull and perfectly polished and flawless to meet Riva’s standards. “It’s very expensive and very detailed, and to paint these items and protect them from scratching during construction is challenging.”

Intense attention to detail is what makes Riva stand out, for instance installing screws and then painting their heads in the same colour as the hull. So it makes sense when Beretta says, “We don’t think of 110' Dolcevita as a ‘superyacht’ – she is simply a yacht built in the spirit of iconic Rivas.”

Iconic is an overused word. Many claim it, yet few are truly deserving. The undoubtedly iconic Riva runabouts like Ms Bardot’s are an exception. Only time will tell if the 110' Dolcevita will reach such legendary heights. So far she is certainly making Riva fans sit up and take notice – and place their orders, too.

Riva Aquarama

There are boats that look cool for a year. Others have such classic looks that can be reinvented from generation to generation. Then there are a handful that stand the test of time. The Riva Aquarama is one of those. Carlo Riva’s creation, celebrating the 60th anniversary of its launch in August, was an instant hit when it arrived in 1962.

Three years later, no other boat enjoyed the Aquarama’s elevated brand status; the owners included movie stars like Sophia Loren and Rex Harrison and a small group of royals, which added to the mystique in the public’s eye. But most owners were high-net-worth individuals who were willing to buy an Aquarama for about the same price as a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, Italy’s most expensive car in the mid-’60s.

The boat’s beautiful mahogany exterior, sexy curves, and American engines made it an unbeatable proposition for the rich and famous at a time when the world was searching for new, modern status symbols after World War II. The Aquarama—which took its name from the cinematic technique panorama—quickly found a home along the French and Italian Rivieras. But eventually it became synonymous with Monaco. The principality was fast becoming the upscale, James-Bondish gathering point of celebrities and royalty that seals its reputation today. A harbor of gleaming mahogany Rivas added to the allure.

Riva Aquarama

The Riva Aquarama was an instant hit when it arrived in 1962.  Riva/Assouline

“I know it’s an inanimate object, but if you have a passion and love for beautiful machines, as I do,” says Bruce Paddock, who owns the Aquarama Special Mistral II, “then you’ll identify with the design, performance and quality of the work. When you put those elements together, it creates a mystique and desire between the owner and the object.”

The Aquarama has been named the “Best Runabout Ever” by multiple boating magazines. I had the opportunity to write a book that will be published later this summer about the Aquarama’s history for the centenary of Carlo Riva’s birthday and the 60th anniversary of the first Aquarama, Lipicar—named after Riva’s three daughters, Lia, Pia and Carla. Before researching the book, I’d assumed the Aquarama was a typical Italian boat, long on style, short on engineering and performance.

How wrong I was. One of the highlights of the project was spending a day at the helm of Gala , an Aquarama Super (the second model in the series), which was hull number 425 built in 1970 on Lake Iseo, near Riva’s historic Sarnico factory.

Riva Aquarama

The boat was meticulously crafted from wood.  Riva/Assouline

Owned by Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi, Gala was a stunning wooden boat, with ivory-colored upholstery, a Calax-style steering wheel inspired by a 1958 Chrysler 300, and side throttles. Unlike most boats, the helm is on the left side. Riva had decided early on to model the Aquarama after the finest luxury cars with throaty American marine engines ( Gala had twin 320 hp Rivas, which were modified Crusaders). The hand-built wooden hulls were built on a production line like cars for quality control and timely delivery.

At the dock, Gala had a stately presence, with pinstripes on the light-colored mahogany foredeck, a beautiful reddish-tinted hull, gleaming chrome, and a wraparound automotive-style windshield which was radical for the day. The oversized steering wheel felt perfect for a boat that would’ve been compared to a Cadillac or Lincoln in its day. And the side throttles were also modeled on a car to make it more intuitive for new owners who were not necessarily boaters. The hull had been designed for ocean running—after Riva had been chided by a longtime friend for building “lake boats.”

We didn’t find any big seas running around Lake Iseo, but the lake, with mountains in the distance, was a perfect backdrop to this 52-year-old beauty. Galassi, who had wanted an Aquarama as a child, believes that the Aquarama is the most perfect design ever. “The sound of the engines, the wood, the beautiful sweep of the hull, the performance,” he says, listing the attributes.

Riva Aquarama

Carlo Riva’s creation is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its launch in August.  Riva/Assouline

He forgot the word fun. It was such an enjoyable boat to drive, turning sharp with the twin engines. When the hull slapped it was a much softer sound than fiberglass. There was a sense of grace and performance, especially considering its age, that I hadn’t felt before. I had the helm a few hours but let the captain dock it, as the mahogany finish was flawless and I didn’t want to leave any scratches. I know it’s over-hyping it, but I have to say my day aboard Gala— probably because I knew so much about Aquarama’s history—was one of my most memorable days on the water after 30 years of testing boats.

Beyond the beautiful, varnished wood and chrome work, features like the bow anchor locker, with a clever self-retrieving anchor system, and the soft canvas top had a huge spring inside to make it easy to raise and lower the canvas when it started to rain. Wicker drink trays were built into the backs of the forward seats, and a beautiful sunpad was designed over the engines. The transom was sloped to allow easy access to the water. The details had clearly been set and then reset by Riva and his team.

Riva Aquarama

The owners included movie stars like Sophia Loren and Rex Harrison and a small group of royals.  Riva/Assouline

Despite the beauty, Aquarama owners love to use their boats, rather than groom them for classic boat shows. “We put 650 miles on the hull during our first season, and that was on weekends,” says Sean Brown, who with wife Delphine, bought The Brown Knight in 1998 and keeps it at their home on Lake George, NY. “This boat runs the way boats should run—fast and stable with no trim tabs. I don’t want a show queen.”

Among American classic boat owners, who tend to favor domestic brands like Chris-Crafts and Garwoods, the Aquarama is an outlier. But there are large classic Riva collections, including many Aquarama owners, on Lake Tahoe, Lake George, the Great Lakes and freshwater lakes in Florida. Among the 760 completed Aquaramas, 650 are still around. The most historic models in the best condition continue to fetch high six-figure prices.

The elegant mahogany design was an instant hit among CEOs, royalty and movie stars when it launched in 1962.

When Carlo Riva performed a Franken-boat surgery on one of his Tritone models in 1962, he had no idea that the gleaming new mahogany design would become the world’s most beloved powerboat. At the time, he was intent on reinventing the family brand,  Riva , started by his great-grandfather Pietro in 1842 on Lake Iseo in Sarnico, Italy. Over the years, the yard had introduced many successful designs but needed a forward-looking model that reflected the glamour that was consuming postwar Italy.

Carlo originally wanted to call the new boat the Admiral but settled on a more futuristic name, Aquarama, after the trendy panoramic film technique Cinerama, which utilized three adjoining screens. The boat’s beautiful mahogany hull, with its sweeping, one-piece windshield and center sun pad, became a status symbol almost immediately after the Aquarama launched in 1962—no doubt helped by the fact that the boat was not only sexy but also fast and functional, powered by 185 hp  Chris-Craft  engines and able to hit a top speed of 45 mph.

The first Aquaramas were an instant hit among CEOs, royalty and movie stars, even priced as much as a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, the most expensive car in Italy at the time. Sophia Loren purchased hull number three, and soon Rex Harrison, King Hussein of Jordan and Brigitte Bardot and her third husband, the German baron and playboy Gunther Sachs, were all owners as well. By 1965, the Riva Aquarama was considered the world’s most desirable motorboat.

riva yachts interior

Its unmistakable shape became a centerpiece of Monaco’s harbor. “My father [Prince Rainier III] saw Mr. Riva as quite a businessman and engineer,” says Prince Albert II of Monaco. “And the Aquarama, of course, became the mythical symbol of the Riva adventure. It was so visible in Monaco [that] it became closely linked with our maritime presence.” The  Monaco Yacht Club  even created the Riva Aquarama Lounge, the only room named after a boat in the entire Lord Norman Foster–designed facility.

And it wasn’t just movie stars and royalty who gave the Aquarama its cachet. Carlo had accented the boat with references to the most expensive luxury cars of the day, including custom stainless-steel gauges, the steering wheel from the 1958 Chrysler 300, wicker tables that folded down behind the front seats and a nifty, spring-operated Bimini that shielded the cockpit from excessive sun and rain.

Fittingly, the Aquarama has always drawn more comparisons to couture and high culture than other machines. Carlo referred to the chrome fittings—including the bowsprit, nicknamed the crocodile’s grin for its distinctive shape—as the boat’s “jewelry,” while Augusto Savoldi, who began his apprenticeship at age 16 on the first Aquarama, recalls the master carpenters treating the original richly grained Honduran Cedar console like “a piece of art.” Carlo’s daughter Lia, meanwhile, remembers her father saying the engines’ melodic rumbling was “not noise; it’s music.” Perhaps the best barometer of the Aquarama’s iconic status is its consistently high resale value. Prices for historically correct restorations, depending on model and series, range between $400,000 and $800,000, with the record price, for the second-to-last-built Aquarama Special, standing at $1.15 million—still, perhaps, a small price to pay for history’s purest distillation of la dolce vita.

Cruising the Moskva River: A short guide to boat trips in Russia’s capital

riva yachts interior

There’s hardly a better way to absorb Moscow’s atmosphere than on a ship sailing up and down the Moskva River. While complicated ticketing, loud music and chilling winds might dampen the anticipated fun, this checklist will help you to enjoy the scenic views and not fall into common tourist traps.

How to find the right boat?

There are plenty of boats and selecting the right one might be challenging. The size of the boat should be your main criteria.

Plenty of small boats cruise the Moskva River, and the most vivid one is this yellow Lay’s-branded boat. Everyone who has ever visited Moscow probably has seen it.

riva yachts interior

This option might leave a passenger disembarking partially deaf as the merciless Russian pop music blasts onboard. A free spirit, however, will find partying on such a vessel to be an unforgettable and authentic experience that’s almost a metaphor for life in modern Russia: too loud, and sometimes too welcoming. Tickets start at $13 (800 rubles) per person.

Bigger boats offer smoother sailing and tend to attract foreign visitors because of their distinct Soviet aura. Indeed, many of the older vessels must have seen better days. They are still afloat, however, and getting aboard is a unique ‘cultural’ experience. Sometimes the crew might offer lunch or dinner to passengers, but this option must be purchased with the ticket. Here is one such  option  offering dinner for $24 (1,490 rubles).

riva yachts interior

If you want to travel in style, consider Flotilla Radisson. These large, modern vessels are quite posh, with a cozy restaurant and an attentive crew at your service. Even though the selection of wines and food is modest, these vessels are still much better than other boats.

riva yachts interior

Surprisingly, the luxurious boats are priced rather modestly, and a single ticket goes for $17-$32 (1,100-2,000 rubles); also expect a reasonable restaurant bill on top.

How to buy tickets?

Women holding photos of ships promise huge discounts to “the young and beautiful,” and give personal invitations for river tours. They sound and look nice, but there’s a small catch: their ticket prices are usually more than those purchased online.

“We bought tickets from street hawkers for 900 rubles each, only to later discover that the other passengers bought their tickets twice as cheap!”  wrote  (in Russian) a disappointed Rostislav on a travel company website.

Nevertheless, buying from street hawkers has one considerable advantage: they personally escort you to the vessel so that you don’t waste time looking for the boat on your own.

riva yachts interior

Prices start at $13 (800 rubles) for one ride, and for an additional $6.5 (400 rubles) you can purchase an unlimited number of tours on the same boat on any given day.

Flotilla Radisson has official ticket offices at Gorky Park and Hotel Ukraine, but they’re often sold out.

Buying online is an option that might save some cash. Websites such as  this   offer considerable discounts for tickets sold online. On a busy Friday night an online purchase might be the only chance to get a ticket on a Flotilla Radisson boat.

This  website  (in Russian) offers multiple options for short river cruises in and around the city center, including offbeat options such as ‘disco cruises’ and ‘children cruises.’ This other  website  sells tickets online, but doesn’t have an English version. The interface is intuitive, however.

Buying tickets online has its bad points, however. The most common is confusing which pier you should go to and missing your river tour.

riva yachts interior

“I once bought tickets online to save with the discount that the website offered,” said Igor Shvarkin from Moscow. “The pier was initially marked as ‘Park Kultury,’ but when I arrived it wasn’t easy to find my boat because there were too many there. My guests had to walk a considerable distance before I finally found the vessel that accepted my tickets purchased online,” said the man.

There are two main boarding piers in the city center:  Hotel Ukraine  and  Park Kultury . Always take note of your particular berth when buying tickets online.

Where to sit onboard?

Even on a warm day, the headwind might be chilly for passengers on deck. Make sure you have warm clothes, or that the crew has blankets ready upon request.

The glass-encased hold makes the tour much more comfortable, but not at the expense of having an enjoyable experience.

riva yachts interior

Getting off the boat requires preparation as well. Ideally, you should be able to disembark on any pier along the way. In reality, passengers never know where the boat’s captain will make the next stop. Street hawkers often tell passengers in advance where they’ll be able to disembark. If you buy tickets online then you’ll have to research it yourself.

There’s a chance that the captain won’t make any stops at all and will take you back to where the tour began, which is the case with Flotilla Radisson. The safest option is to automatically expect that you’ll return to the pier where you started.

Neva Towers Multifunctional Estate / HOK + FXFOWLE + SPEECH

Neva Towers Multifunctional Estate / HOK + FXFOWLE + SPEECH - Cityscape

  • Written by Patrick Lynch

Visualizations of the last full-scale skyscrapers in Moscow ’s new International Business Center (“Moscow City”) have been revealed. Designed by an international team made up of HOK (USA), FXFOWLE (USA) and SPEECH (Russia), the two “Neva Towers” will provide additional residential and office space to the skyscraper district, which includes many of Europe’s tallest structures, including Europe’s tallest building, Federation Tower (sometimes called Vostok Tower); and one of the world’s tallest twisting buildings, Evolution Tower .

Neva Towers Multifunctional Estate / HOK + FXFOWLE + SPEECH - Cityscape

Located on a triangular site in the northwest of Moscow City, the two rectangular towers rise from a 4-story podium, arranged to create an open plaza and green space surrounding the buildings that will be free from future development. The landscaped space will serve as the entry point to the towers, as well as to the aboveground and underground retail galleria and parking deck.

Neva Towers Multifunctional Estate / HOK + FXFOWLE + SPEECH - Table, Chair, Lighting, Patio, Courtyard

Program types will be split between the two skyscrapers – the taller of the two buildings will reach a height of 338 meters and will contain 77 floors of residential units, while the shorter tower will provide 63 floors broken up between office and apartment levels. In total, the project will add 1,210 new apartment units.

As they rise, the towers retain a classic form that gradually steps back to a fully glazed top tier to give the structure a visual lightness and provide the penthouse apartments with panoramic views of the city.

Neva Towers Multifunctional Estate / HOK + FXFOWLE + SPEECH - Windows, Cityscape

“The tower configuration is expressly laconic: the shape of the flat high-rise buildings is modified by slight shifts of the central parts forming a sort of a core of the towers, which is enveloped on both sides by three tiers tapering upwards,” explain development group Renaissance Development.

“The facades of both towers are decorated with pylons getting narrower from the bottom up. Such design imparts a special appeal to the structure, being both effectively up-to-date and recalling the legendary specimens of the 20th century high-rise construction.”

Neva Towers Multifunctional Estate / HOK + FXFOWLE + SPEECH - Cityscape

The project has been estimated to be completed by 2019.
