The Pedigree and Performance of Riva’s 66’ Ribelle

Pre-dawn rain faded as the sun split the horizon in Cannes, France. The late summer’s bright light reflected off the Riva 66’ Ribelle’s sapphire-blue hull, illuminating the deep hue at quayside. It was an ocean blue, the kind of color I only see when I’m cruising offshore, where the fathom depths have commas. It was opulent. And it set the stage for all that followed on this sporty cruiser built in Sarnico, Italy. The 66’s lines, inspired by the builder’s 76’ Perseo, have movement. The yacht seems to run while sitting still. This visual accomplishment is in part thanks to an aggressive bow design. Her entry is like a fillet knife: fine and honed to teach the sea a lesson when it acts up. Gleaming stainless-steel rails wrap around the yacht, complementing the straight-edge sheer line from bow to stern. The stainless steel also accents the hull color while adding to the yacht’s sinewy, athletic appearance.
![riva yachts interior riva 66 ribelle](https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/uploads/2021/09/66-ribelle-2-1024x679.jpg)
She’s set up as a flybridge yacht yet appears more of an express cruiser at first glance. Her profile is set low thanks to that sheer line, and she has nearly full-length hullside glass with a raked hardtop, making her reminiscent of a sprinter set in the blocks, itching for the starter gun to go off.
And the gun went off.
Twin 1,550 hp MAN diesels in a V-drive setup roared to life as my test 66’ Ribelle got up and out quickly. She tracked true, and she felt stable and effortless as we cruised across a placid Gulf of Napoule. As the engines spooled up to 2,320 rpm (within 20 rpm of their rating), she hit an average 36.8-knot top-end, which is just 0.2 knots shy of her builder’s projected wide-open-throttle speed. Cruise speed was 31.5 knots at 2,000 rpm, within 1.5 knots of the builder’s 33-knot expected number. My test 66’ Ribelle was fully loaded: 1,004 gallons of fuel, 188 gallons of water and a dozen people on board. The yacht’s full-load displacement is 102,515 pounds.
![riva yachts interior riva 66 ribelle](https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/uploads/2021/09/66-ribelle-3-1024x682.jpg)
At wide-open throttle, those MAN diesels burned about 160 gph. Considering a 10 percent reserve, the yacht’s fuel capacity gives the 66’ Ribelle a 207 nm range at top speed. At cruise, the motors consume 120 gph, increasing range to 237 nautical miles. Drop the throttles back to 1,800 rpm, and the 66 makes 28 knots while the diesels consume 99 gph, increasing range to 255 nautical miles.
But this vessel is about driving, not long-range voyaging. It’s a 66-foot-long sports car on the sea, a design approach that makes sense when you consider that Piero Ferrari (yes, that Ferrari) was involved in the creation process, along with Officina Italiana Design and the Ferretti Group’s engineering department. The yacht runs like she is being chased. She carves S-turns like an Olympic slalom skier, and she offers serious driving thrills.
I drove her from the lower helm, which is to port and forward of the salon. There’s a bench seat for two, but given the boat’s agility, I liked standing and feeling the movement under my feet. An electric hatch overhead opened when fresh air was desired. Single-lever MAN controls fell right under the palm of my right hand as I eased the throttles forward. A MAN-Böening integrated monitoring system provided vital engine data on flush-mounted displays, with the helm console framed in stainless steel.
The 66’ Ribelle planed easily. Her steering was real-time responsive, and the yacht had a moderate inboard heel on hard-over turns. She has beefy mullions in the corner of the raked hardtop that restrict visibility when turning hard over, but the flybridge helm has clean sightlines in all directions.
![riva yachts interior riva 66 ribelle](https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/uploads/2021/09/66-ribelle-4-1024x439.jpg)
Inside, the yacht’s interior is luxurious. High-end leathers from Penelopeoggi and Mastrotto work in concert with richly toned mahogany, stainless-steel accents, and light-tone upholstery from Mariaflora, creating a contemporary, inviting style. House-length windows, a cockpit door that disappears belowdecks, and 6-foot-7-inch salon headroom bring in light and create a sense of spaciousness.
Low-back, L-shaped salon seating to starboard keeps guests within earshot of the helmsman while offering unobstructed views of the sea. An electric high-low table adjusts for morning coffee, lunch or afternoon cocktails. With the cockpit door stowed, the space from the transom sun pad to the helm becomes an indoor-outdoor entertainment zone.
The 66’ Ribelle is arranged for cruising families, with three staterooms and three heads. The master is full-beam amidships with 6-foot-7-inch headroom and an en suite head, and offers ocean views out the hullside windows that flank the centerline berth. A settee is to port for time on the hook with a book.
![riva yachts interior riva 66 ribelle](https://www.yachtingmagazine.com/uploads/2021/09/66-ribelle-5-1024x439.jpg)
The forepeak VIP has a step-up berth and en suite head, and the third guest stateroom is abaft the VIP to port, with twin berths and an en suite head. This third head also acts as the day-head with companionway access.
As sleek as the Riva 66’ Ribelle’s exterior looks, her interior is equally impressive, perhaps rivaled only by the yacht’s performance on the salt. She is a chic sport cruiser with a thoroughbred’s heart.
Foredeck Fun
The Riva 66’ Ribelle’s foredeck sun-pad space measures about 75 square feet, ensuring that everyone on board has a spot to catch some rays or enjoy sundowners on the hook.
Ship to Shore
This yacht’s transom garage accommodates a Williams Sportjet 345. The Sportjet measures 11 feet 3 inches length overall, has a 5-foot-8-inch beam and fits five guests on board. Power is a 90 hp BRP Rotax ACE engine, and top speed is about 40 knots. Additionally, the tender garage can house a Seabob.
For those looking for a nearly roll-free ride on the 66’ Ribelle, a Seakeeper 9 gyrostabilizer is available.

Riva’s Flybridge range has soared to new heights with the 130’ Bellissima, an elegant 40m, 300GT tri-deck that offers expansive rosewood interiors but is just as notable for its appealing array of outdoor social areas. Words: Olivia Michel; Photos: Ferretti Group ![]() The 130’ Bellissima was designed by Officina Italian Design Riva’s 130’ Bellissima is best described as a modern superyacht with a classic soul. When hull one launched from the Ferretti Group’s La Spezia shipyard last year, the 40m superyacht became the new flagship of the Italian builder’s Flybridge series, which also includes the 82’ Diva, 90’ Argo, 102’ Corsaro Super and 110’ Dolcevita. A star at the last two editions of the Monaco Yacht Show, Bellissima is Riva’s first planing Flybridge model to feature a tri-deck design, with Ferretti Group working closely with Officina Italiana Design – which has designed for Riva for almost three decades – to keep the model’s interior volume below 300GT. ![]() The 130’ Bellissima is the largest model built at Riva’s La Spezia shipyard The closest word the designers and shipyard found to fully define the newest Riva was ultimately bellissima , Italian for ‘very beautiful’. Alberto Galassi, Ferretti Group’s CEO, uses romantic language to talk about the boatbuilder’s new pride and joy. “When you see this yacht cruising on the water, everything stops. It’s an aesthetic experience that words can’t describe,” he philosophises. When Yacht Style stepped aboard, the 130’ Bellissima was docked in Port Hercules next to the 110’ Dolcevita, formerly the largest yacht in the Flybridge series. The side-by-side comparison accentuated the uniqueness of the 300GT Bellissima, which is 6m longer than the 219GT Dolcevita and has an extra deck. ![]() The optional jacuzzi offers a secluded area to relax Sergio Beretta, co-founder and CEO of Officina Italiana Design, said: “In practice, Bellissima is like an older sister to Dolcevita, but with a style all of her own that makes her different from any other big yacht of the Riva family.” Mauro Micheli, co-founder and Chief Designer of the studio, has used the epithets of “sporty”, “sleek” and “slender” to describe the overall look of the yacht’s profile. The exterior is contemporary, fashioned from a symphony of glass, steel and carbon-fibre, and featuring a counter-curvature windshield that sets her silhouette apart from the rest of the fleet. ![]() Bird’s eye view of the aft end of the sun, upper, main and lower decks Micheli has penned every Riva launched since 1994 and a hint of this long-standing collaboration is seen in the two simple lines running along the Bellissima profile. Micheli notes that this is a classic feature seen on all Riva models and “very much reflects Officina Italiana Design’s clean, rigorous styling philosophy”. By combining the sloping windshield with vast glazed surfaces and a severely raked bow, the boat has an almost arrowhead-shaped outline. The design is not only eye-catching but enhances aerodynamics, allowing a top speed of 22.5 knots with twin 2,638mhp MTU engines, as well as a range of 360nm at 20 knots or 1,000nm at 11 knots. ![]() Aft view of the stunning sun deck A 20sqm garage – with room for a tender, jet-ski and Seabobs – is located on the port side of the vessel to make way for a new open-air beach club at the stern. Lower and closer to the water than on any previous Riva superyacht, the beach club includes a swim platform and room for an alfresco lounge to dry off after a dip in the sea. An outdoor jacuzzi, meanwhile, is located at the bow of the upper deck to fully optimise onboard space and enhance privacy for guests enjoying a soak in the sun. ![]() Forward view from the sun deck to the foredeck UP AND DOWN Inside the Bellissima, however, is where the historic Riva heritage is most clearly realised in direct contrast with the futuristic exterior. Glossy rosewood has been used throughout the interiors – even in the galley – to complete the classic style for which Riva has become known. Yet the darker, more masculine shades of the panelling and leather chosen to adorn her stop Bellissima from looking “old fashioned” and bring her up-to-date and in line with interior trends. ![]() Aft view of the main-deck saloon, which includes a formal dining area forward The main deck starts aft with a generous cockpit that leads into a saloon with symmetrical L-shaped sofas on both sides and a forward dining area. Indoor spaces are generous, with ceilings as high as 2.05m, but Officina Italiana Design has combined Bellissima’s old-school rosewood finish with glass and mirror elements to make the interiors feel even more open and roomy. The starboard hallway leads to the lower-deck staircase and day head, then onto the full-beam master suite, which benefits from the widebody design on the forward portion of the main deck. The owner’s area starts with an office that leads into the bedroom, which has a walk-in wardrobe aft on the port side, while forward are separate his-and-hers bathrooms either side of a central shower. ![]() Starboard view of the master suite, with the bed arranged facing aft The lower deck includes four 15sqm VIP en-suite cabins, two forward of the hallway and two aft, all with inward-facing beds and all accessed by a stunning staircase. Micheli notes that the “beautiful effect” of the staircase is meant to attract attention, “ennobling its function as a link between the decks” and reflecting the “maniacal attention to any detail” typical of Riva projects. The upper deck has a skylounge with facing L-shaped sofas, although the area can be used or converted into a cinema, workout space or even a study. The room leads aft to a huge, covered deck that offers alfresco dining, while the uncovered end can be dressed with sun loungers or other loose furniture. ![]() Forward view of the upper-deck skylounge or saloon Forward on the upper deck is the bow lounge, which has two symmetrical L-shaped sofas facing a large quadruple sun pad, while forward is the jacuzzi. As it that wasn’t enough, the stunning sky deck has an open aft end suitable for sun beds, while the covered area can fit four sides of sofas and chairs for a gorgeous, protected hangout with stunning views. RIVA STYLE LIVES ON Even with 10 guests and seven crew on board, the design choices that created the Bellissima have ensured that this 40m superyacht will never feel crowded. This is in part due to the intelligent layout of the vessel and in part to the flexibility of spaces. ![]() Stairs from the main deck to the lower-deck guest cabins And ultimately, the Gemini nature of a modern profile paired with Riva’s trademark traditional wood features gives owners a sense of owning two types of yacht in one. As Beretta explains: “Bellissima has sporty lines but at the same time is elegant, perfect for any market including Asia. This is the result of the perfect balance we always strive for.” At least five units of the Bellissima had been sold within a year of the model’s world premiere. “So far, the boat is particularly popular in the North American market, while in Asia we have several open negotiations,” Galassi notes. “The expected waiting time is about two years, which is due to the great sales success of this model.” ![]() The elegant helm station With many shipyards still struggling to offer new build slots, this is still a decent turnaround time for new owners keen to hit the water in grand style. Beretta does note, however, that delivery time is dependent on the level of personalisation owners may want to implement. Having the option to infuse customisations into a serial model is key to ensuring the Bellissima is not just a luxury asset but also an expression of an owner’s personality. “If owners choose a Riva, they don’t only select a boat,” he says. “They select a particular lifestyle, for true connoisseurs.” www.riva-yacht.com www.ferrettigroupasiapacific.com Editor's Picks![]() Yacht insurance is money well spent ![]() Sunreef’s 60 Power Eco ![]() Powercat players are multiplying ![]() ‘God of Water’ makes waves with its 68![]() Bluegame’s big multihull![]() Corsaro’s super second coming![]() True Blue Dutch Beauty![]() Riva’s stunning new Diva![]() Azimut’s fresh Fly 72![]() Galeon’s 560 Fly expands beach mode![]() Sanlorenzo’s stunning 57Steel![]() Subscribe To Our NewsletterCopyright © 2024 Website by Malikhan Design & Digital All Rights Reserved © 2023![]() Copyright © 2024 Yacht Style. All Rights Reserved .Website by Unstoppable. Race: Inside Riva’s First 50 Metre SuperyachtWhen the Riva 50 Metri made her public debut at the Monaco Yacht Show in 2019, the name emblazoned on her transom – Race – gave a hint as to who her owner was. And in case there was any doubt, the treasure trove of Ferrari memorabilia on board and a very unusual automotive-inspired bridge made it crystal clear. At 49.9 metres, Race is the largest-ever Riva yacht, proudly previewed in June 2019 at Venice’s Arsenal, during an exclusive client event. She’s also the first to emerge from the Riva Superyachts Division, which was established in 2014 at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona, where its CRN, Custom Line and Pershing superyachts are built. The name Riva most vividly evokes the sexy runabouts that made the brand famous in the 1960s and 70s. But Carlo Riva always envisioned a place for larger Riva boats, as seen in his collaboration with De Vries (Feadship) and later CRN on the 24-metre Riva Caravelle series, and his personal yacht, 30.5-metre Vespucci , which was delivered in 1978 and relaunched in 2018 after a thorough refit. ![]() Two exterior styles, each drawing inspiration from classic Rivas, are offered on the same technical platforms in the Riva Superyachts series, in 50-, 60-, 70- and 95-metre sizes. This first design is inspired by the 1964 Riva Caravelle series. The second option is sportier, with rounded lines and a more aggressive profile, taken from the Riva coupé yachts and seen on the current Riva 76 Perseo and 88 Domino Super. The Riva 50 Metri’s exterior and interior were created by Officina Italiana Design in concert with Riva’s in-house team. “Race takes inspiration from the Caravelle, which was a true masterpiece conceived by Carlo Riva,” says Sergio Beretta, CEO of Officina Italiana Design, which he founded with chief designer Mauro Micheli. “The challenge was to innovate without forgetting the DNA of the Riva brand.” In essence, Race is a highly modernised take on the classic Caravelle. Both yachts feature parallelogram windows, as well as forward-sloping lines that give the impression of movement. During the Monaco show, Race had an enviable position at the very end of Jetée Lucciana, so you could admire her silver hull and clean and simple lines. “ Race has a great personality,” says Micheli. “She has three straight lines that define each level. The design is clean, and we stayed away from overworked, elaborate or redundant lines and shapes, both in the exterior and the interior.” This veneer is found on all exterior panels, ceilings and the built-in exterior furniture. “By decreasing the weight, you have much better results in terms of fuel consumption,” says de Vivo. “At 14 knots, Race burns 300 litres per hour with the engines and generators on. It’s a very good result for us.” Powered by twin 1,360hp MTU 8V 4000 M63 diesel engines, this full-displacement yacht in aluminium alloy reaches a top speed of 15 knots and has a cruising range of 3,500 nautical miles at 11 knots. It was also vital that the first Riva 50 have the essence of an iconic Riva. This translated to an obsession with the material selection and a bevy of little details – even the stainless-steel drains on the deck are emblazoned with the Riva logo written in miniature. Custom doorknobs, similar to those seen on the Riva Dolcevita, were moulded to fit the owner’s hand perfectly. ![]() One of the first things that de Vivo points out is the use of lightweight materials derived from the aviation industry: a sandwiched panel made of fibreglass and Nomex – the latter is also used in Formula One cars. A veneer goes over the top to give the look of wood, but it’s much lighter. The interior of Race is modern, masculine and distinctively Riva. There isn’t a dizzying array of materials; instead the design team concentrated on a uniform colour palette of grey and white, accentuated by mahogany, stainless steel, white statuario marble with grey veining and an abundance of glass, like the glass-framed main stairwell. Narrow strips of mahogany on the ceilings in the saloons and cabins add dimension and hide the air-conditioning output, as the air filters out between the wooden slats. These slats are carried throughout the boat, from the main saloon to the hallways and the guest cabins. A seven-metre tender is held below in the garage, which has a shell door for launching. When it is launched, the space is transformed into a beach club with loose furnishings. There is enough space for the area to be used as a gym even when under way with the tender inside. The second Riva 50 Metri is currently in build at the Ferretti Group Superyacht Yard in Ancona, with delivery slated for early 2021, before the summer season. According to Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi, seeing the Riva Superyachts Division come to life was a dream of Carlo Riva. ![]() Alberto Cocchi Don't Miss out![]() Apartment M by Maria Kardami Design Studio![]() Franck Muller Boutique in Athens designed by Keno Arena![]() Cassina store in Athens, Grand Opening![]() Portgate Tower, The new tower of Limassol![]() 672 Wine Club
Boat of the Week: Why the Classic Riva Aquarama Is Still the Most Beautiful Runabout Ever MadeAnd we had a chance to run one., michael verdon, michael verdon's most recent stories.
![]() There are boats that look cool for a year. Others have such classic looks that can be reinvented from generation to generation. Then there are a handful that stand the test of time. The Riva Aquarama is one of those. Carlo Riva’s creation, celebrating the 60th anniversary of its launch in August, was an instant hit when it arrived in 1962. Three years later, no other boat enjoyed the Aquarama’s elevated brand status; the owners included movie stars like Sophia Loren and Rex Harrison and a small group of royals, which added to the mystique in the public’s eye. But most owners were high-net-worth individuals who were willing to buy an Aquarama for about the same price as a Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud, Italy’s most expensive car in the mid-’60s. ![]() Related Stories
The boat’s beautiful mahogany exterior, sexy curves, and American engines made it an unbeatable proposition for the rich and famous at a time when the world was searching for new, modern status symbols after World War II. The Aquarama—which took its name from the cinematic technique panorama—quickly found a home along the French and Italian Rivieras. But eventually it became synonymous with Monaco. The principality was fast becoming the upscale, James-Bondish gathering point of celebrities and royalty that seals its reputation today. A harbor of gleaming mahogany Rivas added to the allure. ![]() The Riva Aquarama was an instant hit when it arrived in 1962. Riva/Assouline “I know it’s an inanimate object, but if you have a passion and love for beautiful machines, as I do,” says Bruce Paddock, who owns the Aquarama Special Mistral II, “then you’ll identify with the design, performance and quality of the work. When you put those elements together, it creates a mystique and desire between the owner and the object.” The Aquarama has been named the “Best Runabout Ever” by multiple boating magazines. I had the opportunity to write a book that will be published later this summer about the Aquarama’s history for the centenary of Carlo Riva’s birthday and the 60th anniversary of the first Aquarama, Lipicar—named after Riva’s three daughters, Lia, Pia and Carla. Before researching the book, I’d assumed the Aquarama was a typical Italian boat, long on style, short on engineering and performance. How wrong I was. One of the highlights of the project was spending a day at the helm of Gala , an Aquarama Super (the second model in the series), which was hull number 425 built in 1970 on Lake Iseo, near Riva’s historic Sarnico factory. ![]() The boat was meticulously crafted from wood. Riva/Assouline Owned by Ferretti Group CEO Alberto Galassi, Gala was a stunning wooden boat, with ivory-colored upholstery, a Calax-style steering wheel inspired by a 1958 Chrysler 300, and side throttles. Unlike most boats, the helm is on the left side. Riva had decided early on to model the Aquarama after the finest luxury cars with throaty American marine engines ( Gala had twin 320 hp Rivas, which were modified Crusaders). The hand-built wooden hulls were built on a production line like cars for quality control and timely delivery. At the dock, Gala had a stately presence, with pinstripes on the light-colored mahogany foredeck, a beautiful reddish-tinted hull, gleaming chrome, and a wraparound automotive-style windshield which was radical for the day. The oversized steering wheel felt perfect for a boat that would’ve been compared to a Cadillac or Lincoln in its day. And the side throttles were also modeled on a car to make it more intuitive for new owners who were not necessarily boaters. The hull had been designed for ocean running—after Riva had been chided by a longtime friend for building “lake boats.” We didn’t find any big seas running around Lake Iseo, but the lake, with mountains in the distance, was a perfect backdrop to this 52-year-old beauty. Galassi, who had wanted an Aquarama as a child, believes that the Aquarama is the most perfect design ever. “The sound of the engines, the wood, the beautiful sweep of the hull, the performance,” he says, listing the attributes. ![]() Carlo Riva’s creation is celebrating the 60th anniversary of its launch in August. Riva/Assouline He forgot the word fun. It was such an enjoyable boat to drive, turning sharp with the twin engines. When the hull slapped it was a much softer sound than fiberglass. There was a sense of grace and performance, especially considering its age, that I hadn’t felt before. I had the helm a few hours but let the captain dock it, as the mahogany finish was flawless and I didn’t want to leave any scratches. I know it’s over-hyping it, but I have to say my day aboard Gala— probably because I knew so much about Aquarama’s history—was one of my most memorable days on the water after 30 years of testing boats. Beyond the beautiful, varnished wood and chrome work, features like the bow anchor locker, with a clever self-retrieving anchor system, and the soft canvas top had a huge spring inside to make it easy to raise and lower the canvas when it started to rain. Wicker drink trays were built into the backs of the forward seats, and a beautiful sunpad was designed over the engines. The transom was sloped to allow easy access to the water. The details had clearly been set and then reset by Riva and his team. ![]() The owners included movie stars like Sophia Loren and Rex Harrison and a small group of royals. Riva/Assouline Despite the beauty, Aquarama owners love to use their boats, rather than groom them for classic boat shows. “We put 650 miles on the hull during our first season, and that was on weekends,” says Sean Brown, who with wife Delphine, bought The Brown Knight in 1998 and keeps it at their home on Lake George, NY. “This boat runs the way boats should run—fast and stable with no trim tabs. I don’t want a show queen.” Among American classic boat owners, who tend to favor domestic brands like Chris-Crafts and Garwoods, the Aquarama is an outlier. But there are large classic Riva collections, including many Aquarama owners, on Lake Tahoe, Lake George, the Great Lakes and freshwater lakes in Florida. Among the 760 completed Aquaramas, 650 are still around. The most historic models in the best condition continue to fetch high six-figure prices. The new 30-metre Riva 102 Corsaro Super is the first of the superyacht-sized Rivas to introduce an open-air lounge at water level, giving owners a place to lounge by the water's edge. There isn't a dizzying array of materials; instead the design team concentrated on a uniform colour palette of grey and white, accentuated by mahogany, stainless steel, white statuario marble with grey veining and an abundance of glass.
