ULTIMATE PICTURE WINDOW - TOPSIDES HULL OPENINGS

pink gin 4 yacht

Living al fresco is no longer restricted to being on deck. At the touch of a button Baltic 175 Pink Gin’s owner can access the fresh air and sea as a panel in the topsides is hydraulically opened to create the ultimate picture window and a personal bathing platform, literally adding a new dimension to the owner’s suite.

A similar arrangement exists on the port side of the main saloon, providing a stunning entry to the yacht’s large lobby. Each door becomes part of the yacht’s load bearing structure through their locking pins and hinges. Finite element analysis was used to ensure class approved engineering.

THE MAKING OF A SILVER GIANT

What people say about our yachts

Few if any yacht builders in the world can match Baltic Yachts for its ability to construct to the very highest standards in advanced carbon composites, a prerequisite for a high performance sailing yacht in which strict weight control and precision engineering are critical.

Prof. Hans Georg Näder

Pink Gin perfectly demonstrates what Baltic Yachts is capable of in terms of technical excellence, problem solving, finish to the highest standard and producing a yacht which reflects precisely the wishes and dreams of the owner.

WHAT'S INSIDE

FORCE FEEDBACK STEERING SYSTEM

Large yachts need hydraulic power to turn their rudders. A drawback is that the helmsman loses the ‘feel’ in the helm, something that lies at the heart of enjoying the sailing experience. We have found a way to re-create this feel to keep the owner in touch with his yacht. Together with experts from the automotive industry we have designed a steering system that mimics the side forces on the rudder and transfers the ‘feel’ electronically to the yacht’s wheel

"Pink Gin VI" : Longest carbon single master is for sale

Friedrich W. Pohl

 ·  01.04.2023

Owner Hans Georg Näder christened his sailing yacht "Pink Gin"

"Three years of planning, three years of construction." Hans Georg Näder described the progress of the "Pink Gin VI" project in a nutshell in mid-May 2017. Näder had invited people to the launch of the largest carbon fibre sloop at the time in Pietarsaari, Finland, in 2018. The almost 54-metre grey hull was launched there.

She was built by Baltic Yachts in Bosund, a few kilometres away. Baltic Yachts is owned by Näder. The owner has also been the shipyard owner here since 2013, and he already knew Baltic Yachts quite well five years ago. The shipyard had already supplied him with "Pink Gin", the Baltic 97 in 1999 and then the 152-footer "V" in 2008.

According to information from Baltic Yachts, owner Hans Georg Näder is currently sailing his "Pink Gin VI" and is also accompanied by an explorer. At the present time the sailing yacht for 27,500,000 euros for sale. In addition to her, Näder's 43-foot yacht and the "Pink Gin Verde" sold. The latter was built in 2021 and is currently moored off the Balearic island of Mallorca.

"Pink gin" has it in and on itself

The Stones fan rocked the seas in 2018 with his sixth "Pink Gin" - the red Stones tongue logo on the fuselage of Näder's Bombardier Challenger is a clear indication of this. And this gin has it all. Näder's sixth sums up the challenges she has overcome, especially the biggest one: "Developing a timeless style, a yacht that suits the owner's usage behaviour, delivers strong performance and looks pleasing at the same time," explains her designer Rolf Vrolijk.

In general, the task was to "learn lessons from the Baltic 152, improve and upgrade it." The new boat shares the sea with a steep stem. "The deck lines and superstructure are based on the predecessor." Vrolijk and Näder have known each other for almost decades. They understand each other. "The new 'Pink Gin' should not be longer than 50 metres in order to be able to moor in ports like Saint-Tropez. Although she now reaches almost 54 metres, she still fits into many harbours," adds Vrolijk.

The improvements include greater dimensional stability: "The increased U-shape of the hull ensures this. We limited the heeling angle to a maximum of 20 to 22 degrees, comfortable yet efficient. Pure regatta yachts are designed for up to 27 degrees." With a ballast of 75 tonnes, "Pink Gin VI" is stiff enough. In addition to the keel box, the hydraulic cylinders and the locking mechanism, the total keel weight of a good 80 tonnes is made up of 56 tonnes for the lead bomb and 18 tonnes for the stainless steel fin. The bomb can be raised from a draught of seven metres and locked at 5.56 metres and 4.50 metres so that it can also be anchored in shallower bays.

"Pink Gin" designed for worldwide travel

The sail plan also plays a role in the performance gain. The developers from Vrolijk's Bremerhaven office Judel/Vrolijk & Co designed it for light Mediterranean winds and long, spacious courses on ocean crossings. "She is primarily designed for worldwide voyages and needs a lot of sail area, which her high slip rig offers." She will reach speeds of around 13 and 14 knots on moderate roomy courses. In light winds, she will not have to rely on the twelve-cylinder MAN engine, which delivers its power to the water via a Hundested gearbox with Hundested propeller.

"The optimum sailing conditions," Vrolijk's team calculated before the launch, "will be at 14 to 16 knots." From 16 knots upwind, the crew reduces the sail area. "Pink Gin VI" uses a genoa in light to medium winds, otherwise a slim and high-cut blade sail and a working jib on the inner stay. There are 1,322 square metres on the cross with mainsail and blade. Space sheets pull 2,593 square metres on the boat with the pink asymmetric monster sail.

"Pink Gin": The pink-coloured monster sail brings the name of the sailing yacht into focus

A top speed of 30 knots is possible on these courses. The asymmetric weighs a quarter of a tonne and can no longer be managed with the crew's muscle power. A remote-controlled carbon fibre drum with a diameter of two metres in the forepeak, developed by Baltic, helps with setting and recovering.

Sailing position and yacht steered from the centre cockpit

The young Mallorcan captain Oscar Vallejo steers the sail position and yacht from the centre cockpit - one of three - using one of the two helm stations. The steering system is one of the unusual novelties called the Force Feedback Steering System - an innovation from Baltic Yachts. Despite the rudder pressure on the huge four-metre-deep blade, the helmsman feels only silky-smooth, but relatively increasing and decreasing resistance, as on a small boat in direct contact with the quadrant. Electronic sensors make it possible.

The owner decided on the ergonomics of the deck layout with three cockpits. "It reflects the utilisation," explains Vrolijk. In the aft cockpit behind the boom, the owner and guests can relax and worship the sun, completely separated from the large steering and control station in front. Further forward, the third cockpit is an inviting space with a bar and an open-air dining area.

At anchor, an awning over the boom and two Murano glass candelabras under the boom - designed by the "Pink Gin" interior designers from Design Unlimited and realised by the Parisian lighting specialist Veronese - transform it into a sheltered al-fresco dining salon. Together with floral decorations and potted plants, this large centre cockpit looks like a terrace with a view of the lake all around, with direct access to the first, upper saloon in the deckhouse. This is used for musical entertainment. This is ensured by a self-playing small carbon fibre grand piano from the English piano makers Edelweiss from Cambridge on the port side, a custom-made instrument with bog oak keys.

Under the awning: In the front, the large guest cockpit with dining table, two Murano candelabras hang from the main boom. It is directly connected to the galley below. The bronze sculpture in the centre of the table is by Cuban artist Roberto Fabelo

Furnishing the sailing yacht

Opposite, the audience takes a seat on a Chesterfield-style U-shaped sofa with a small dining table, also made of bog oak, to listen to the electronic pianist. The table and piano are illuminated by Baccarat chandeliers and salmon leather-covered columns in the centre of the salon. The Dutchman Marcin Rusak decorated the second dining area two steps down on the port side with dried flowers and foliage inlaid in semi-transparent resin. Hans Georg Näder inherited the chandelier above the table from his "Pink Gin V". He was attached to it. He couldn't let go of the large Vuitton travel crate either; it too had already served on his previous sailing gin palace and forms the centre of the seating area opposite the large dining table.

Deckhouse: The lower dining area is illuminated by a chandelier from the "Pink Gin V"

The shipyard itself took care of the smoked oak floorboards in the lounge, painted gold, then silver and then deliberately sanded irregularly to expose the layers in places. This is what precious shabby chic looks like. In front of the salons, the shipyard installed four guest cabins, two of which have double beds and a larger one designed for VIPs.

Decors: Two out of four guest cabins offer double beds

The shipyard installed the owner's suite in the bow. Näder, who is not angry when he reads his professorial title, did not miss out on the highly expensive shabbiness in the bedroom, bathroom and walk-in wardrobe. Silk paintings by Cuban artist Roberto Fabelo flatter the studio, but carefully composed puzzle panels made from the hulls of scrapped Cuban fishing boats emphasise the tongue-in-cheek modesty.

... the owner's bathroom in the bow Metro-style tiles made of lightweight composite

Direct access for guests via balconies

The outstanding elements include two balconies that open like side hatches. "Normally, even on large sailing yachts, everything is first hoisted up onto the deck and then stowed down again," explains Vrolijk. This doesn't just apply to provisions and luggage; why shouldn't guests and crew be able to get to their accommodation directly from land? The hatch on the port hatch allows this. It serves as a shared access point. The crew can find their accommodation directly from here in the stern. The starboard balcony, however, belongs to the owner. The former folds out of the suite next to the king-size bed.

Large hatch: the owner's balcony opens to starboard. The complex construction of the hatch also influenced the design of the hull. For a sailing yacht of this size, the installation represents a remarkable achievement of design and shipyard work by Baltic Yachts

"Pink Gin VI" needs eight crew members for technical operation and hospitality. In addition to the captain, his chief mate and the engineer, two deckhands, two stewardesses and the boss live in the stern. Together with them, friends and family, Hans Georg Näder also enjoyed sailing to Uruguay's coasts towards the end of 2018. After all, "Pink Gin VI" is designed for passages of this kind.

Pink Gin VI: The inside story of Baltic Yachts’ all-carbon super sloop

Yachting World

  • September 9, 2020

The interior of the Baltic 175 Pink Gin VI, part-gallery, part-boutique hotel, reflects its owner’s passions. David Glenn takes a tour

The Baltic 175 Pink Gin may have captured most of the headlines for her sheer size and cleverly engineered topside balconies, but below decks a collection of Cuban art and some phenomenal styling demand equal attention.

Mark Tucker’s team at Design Unlimited in the UK worked closely with the yacht’s owner, Professor Hans Georg Näder, with whom they had cooperated on his previous Pink Gin , to produce an unusual exercise in interior styling.

Professor Näder’s fascination with Cuba and his taste in art, fashion and music helped inspire Design Unlimited to use materials rarely seen aboard a yacht. They include fish skin, sealskin, fashioned leather, bamboo, pewter and 8,600-year-old bog oak combining to create an eclectic style that takes the visitor by surprise at every turn.

Not shy of throwing a party, Professor Näder wanted to create a platform for entertaining in a variety of environments above and below deck with music, art and unusual finishes very much part of the mix.

No ordinary experience

Stepping aboard Pink Gin from a tender is no ordinary experience. Instead of taking a boarding ladder to the deck, a topsides opening balcony leads guests directly into the port side lobby, the outboard facing bulkhead of which is taken up almost entirely by artwork fashioned from metal acetone drums. It’s by Roberto Diago, the Cuban artist, whose work can also be seen in the owner’s suite.

Once through the sliding glass safety doors, turn left, or forward, to move into the lower deck saloon dominated on the port side by an extraordinary table featuring dried flowers set in clear resin. The piece is by London-based Polish artist Marcin Rusak and was a constant talking point when we were aboard. One can waste hours examining each tiny petal suspended in the table-top.

Marcin Rusak’s saloon table features flower petals set in clear resin. A baby grand is seen aft

The ornate glass chandelier above this table is a keepsake from the owner’s previous Pink Gin , as is the leather Louis Vuitton trunk furnishing the seating area opposite.

Pillars finished in salmon skin

Design for the leatherwork adorning the lifting keel casing was inspired by bookbinding and the two deck support pillars located either side of the stairway leading to the upper saloon are finished in salmon skin. To port, in the upper saloon, is an Edelweiss Sygnet piano, finished in a subtle shade of pink – or is it purple? It’s positioned to overlook the lower saloon.

Opposite is a smaller dining area furnished with a large, U-shaped custom-made Chesterfield sofa and a table made of rare bog oak, a hard, dark timber possessing a particularly rich hue. This bog wood is thought to be almost 9,000 years old and would have been retrieved from a swamp or bog, the acidic qualities of which preserve and form the colouring we see today. The oak cabin soles in this and most other areas are finished with a type of distressed paintwork that helps create a less formal atmosphere.

Don’t miss the day head

Design Unlimited sourced the unusual wallpaper for the day head

No visitor should leave without a visit to the day head. It’s decorated with a stunning bespoke wallpaper pattern of coloured fish set on a jet-black background. Design Unlimited sourced it and it will leave a lasting impression.

Forward of the main saloon are four guest cabins, one double, a twin and two tiered twins, all with en-suite bathrooms equipped with unusual taps and fittings finished in a type of oxidised metallic bronze; industrial chic might be a way of describing it.

A lobby serving the forward cabins is illuminated naturally using glass decklights by way of the mast. It features a sculpture by Roberto Fabelo, another notable Cuban artist.

Ultimate view

Of all the areas in Pink Gin ’s accommodation, it is perhaps the owner’s suite that succeeds more than any other as a living space and styling exercise, not least because of the fantastic effect created by the topside opening balcony.

This is a large, starboard-side aperture creating a stunning framed vista for the cabin’s occupants and, of course, direct access to the water. You enter the suite through an office area furnished with a desk, the top of which is finished in laser cut stingray skin and horn. There’s nothing understated about Pink Gin .

pink-gin-vi-baltic-sailing-superyacht-master-cabin-credit-Marco-Moog

Spectacular views and direct access to the sea from the owner’s suite via a starboard opening

Informality sets the tone

This leads into the main sleeping accommodation furnished with a king-sized double, the base of which is constructed of bamboo. What is referred to as an ‘art wall’, facing the bed, is dominated by another work by Roberto Diago, this time featuring coarsely finished painted timber from old Cuban fishing boats. This sets the tone for a cabin in which the style is interesting and challenging rather than predictable.

The ‘his and hers’ full-width head and shower room again features the industrial chic styling seen elsewhere in the yacht. It is lined with what look like substantial white tiles, complete with heavy-duty grouting. In fact, the finish comes in composite sheets, made by Baltic, which are notably light.

The effect is remarkable. Another stunning feature in the owner’s suite and this time in a walk-in wardrobe and dressing room, is a carpet using a pattern inspiration taken from one of Professor Näder’s favourite French scarfs.

Roberto Diago’s acetone drum artwork greets visitors boarding via the port side

All the crew accommodation, plus one other large guest cabin are located aft. One of the many advantages of the port side opening into the lobby is that the crew and particularly the galley staff can, if necessary, transfer stores quickly and easily from a tender.

Turn right, or aft, and you step immediately into the large galley, which has its own style comprising granite counter tops that no doubt had the weight police in tears, and composite cabinet doors adorned with what is made to look like a hammered metal finish. There is sleeping accommodation and a mess area for up to nine crew.

Bog oak and pewter trim

On deck there is no let up in the quest for eye-catching style. The aged bog oak can again be seen in the cap rail and the bar occupying the middle of three cockpit areas. The main cockpit table is by I Vassalletti, master craftsmen from Tuscany who have used waxed teak and pewter in its construction. The aforementioned sealskin is used to finish the handrails around the bar.

The cockpit is illuminated by two vast Murano glass chandeliers suspended from the boom. They are so heavy they need to be lifted into place with a block and tackle. Design Unlimited in their press release state: ‘ Pink Gin is a yacht that cannot be categorised within existing superyacht parameters’. It’s quite a claim and they might be right.

Baltic Yachts Pink Gin sailing yacht

The 175-foot sailing yacht Pink Gin VI is a long, lithe beauty. The latest launch from Baltic Yachts is noteworthy for being the world’s largest carbon-fiber sloop, with upwind sails of more than 14,000 square feet, and capable of reaching speeds of 30 knots. Pink Gin is a strong, stable-looking yacht with twin cockpits that stand out for their purple-cushioned seats. A closer look reveals pewter furniture that weathers gracefully, a capstan made of ancient bog oak and pewter, and crystal chandeliers that hang from the boom during social events.

These details are just hints of the pleasure palace inside the carbon-fiber hull. Elegant, organized chaos might be the best way to describe Pink Gin VI ’s interior, with arguably the most unusual collection of features and materials of any yacht that launched at the Monaco show.

Mark Tucker of Design Unlimited says it took five years for the owner to go for the sketches he presented when the sixth model of the Pink Gin series was first discussed. Since then, Pink Gin VI has adopted items like a purple player piano, an 8,500-year-old bog oak dining table, velvets, leather book covers, pewter, salmon skin, Italian plaster, and dozens of other features that give the yacht its distinctive identity. “People either love or hate the interior design, but once on board, they all understand it,” says Tucker.

Pink Gin VI ’s owner had originally requested an interior similar to the last Pink Gin, says Tucker, “but better.” Tucker, who also designed the interior of Pink Gin V , came up with multiple concepts. “But as we presented the different interior options, he realized that he liked the initial sketches. The new interior captured his thoughts and feelings much more accurately.”

Tucker, who has worked with the owner for 16 years, has gotten to know the owner quite well. “He coined the phrase ‘Pink Gin lifestyle’ to reflect the fun and joie de vivre that he wanted his last six yachts to generate,” says Tucker. “He wants anyone who comes aboard to feel like they can really relax. He also wants guests to touch everything, rather than treating the saloon like a display in a museum.”

The tactile attractions are apparent in every room, which all have different themes. The saloon desk is covered with laser-cut stingray skin and its drawers lined with suede. The owner’s cabin has a wall made from Cuban fishing boats and his bed is surrounded by hand-carved bamboo and a leather head board. The pillars beside the staircase are covered in salmon skin, while dried flowers and foliage in a semi-translucent resin table by Dutch artist Marci Rusak sit near the dining area. The keel box and some bulkheads are covered by leather-bound book spines.

The owner wanted to keep several items that were in his previous yacht, including a Louis Vuitton trunk and crystal chandeliers of Murano glass made by a Parisian lighting company called Veronese. Beyond those, Tucker designed the interior down to the smallest detail, including buttons on some of the dressers that serve as knobs.

As the yacht was being completed, the owner wanted several details that had not been in the original brief. “He decided on his 51st birthday that he wanted a player piano on board,” says Tucker. “Those ideas might sound crazy but they came from an owner who is an experienced yachtsman and knows what he wants. When he’s on board, he hires a singer and piano player, so it’s not just a conversation piece.”

The Edelweiss Sygnet piano, built with a custom lilac color, has keys made of the same 8,600-year-old bog oak as the dining table. Baccarat chandeliers hang over both table and piano. The bog oak was carefully sourced after the designers rejected teak and other woods as not having the personality they wanted for the interior. Eventually, they found an ancient piece in Croatia with a dark, solid grain without blonde streaks found on most bog oak. The table goes well with the smoked-oak floors, which were painted gold, then silver, and then sanded for a distressed look, revealing layers of colors.

Though materials come from many sources, Design Unlimited did an excellent job matching them throughout the interior. Nothing looks out of place or disjointed, but keeps the elegant flow. “I think we got it just right,” says Tucker. “Nothing’s offensive or garish, and there’s emotion running through each room. It feels homey. Most important, it’s what the owner wanted. He loves spending time aboard Pink Gin VI . He loves it so much that it’s sometimes hard to get him off the boat.”

The Pink Gin VI sailing yacht is the largest carbon fiber sloop in the world

pink gin 4 yacht

In recent years, the needs of superyacht owners have increased considerably due to the development of technologies applied to boats. Many existing shipyards have had to adapt, while the new ones have already started assuring high standards of technology both for the hulls and for the plant engineering.

But how should a new generation superyacht be today, it must be a multi-role yacht that behaves at the highest levels both as a luxury cruiser and as a racing yacht with a sea of complex high-tech systems starting from the helm to the anchorage to the alarm systems., with simple navigation systems, lightweight but robust construction and minimum noise levels so that the navigation experience is as stress-free and as comfortable as possible., furthermore, the development of the interior technical design must focus on the search for maximum comfort that always satisfies the owners’ individual tastes., these are the main properties that are normally required in the design of a new generation boat and the 175-feet  long (53 meters) pink gin vi is a newly created sailing boat at the top in the world of super yachting no only because it satisfies all these characteristics but because it presents some very complex innovations to realize unusual to find them in a sailboat., the pink gin vi was built by the finnish shipyard baltic yachts, the naval architecture was designed by the famous judel / vrolijk & co studio , while the interiors are signed by design unlimited., this boat was commissioned directly by the current owner of the shipyard the german professor hans georg näder , who over the years has asked to build all six yachts in the pink gin series. the development of the last one required 4 years at the end the results were amazing., the pink gin vi to date is the carbon sailboat with only one tree, technically called sloop, the largest in the world., the tried and tested sandwic or composite structure technique for hulls and decks was used to build it, where baltic yachts has a notable global expertise., the end result was amazing the boat weighs just 235 tons nothing compared to the size. the carbon fiber mast is 67.9 m high, with a shamelessly deep pink veil to be recognized even at great distances., the lifting keel weighs 71 tons and allows a draft that varies from 7 to 4.5 meters., let’s say immediately that pink gin vi has a vocation more for long cruises than for regattas even if a considerable sailing system has been set up., the boat is equipped with a main engine man v 12 of 1400 hp to ensure navigation even without sail with a maximum speed of 20 knots., the peculiar characteristic of this boat is the presence of two openings in the hull of the real folding terraces., a is at the bow in the owners suite on the right hand side. when the opening is closed it is part without any problem of the structure of the hull. when open it generates additional space in the suite due to this personal platform that opens onto the sea through an electro / hydraulic system that is operated on command creating a pleasant balcony with light and fresh air coming directly from the outside with the possibility of dive directly into the sea without going through the main bridge., the other a is at the center of the boat on the left side with direct access from the main hall that allows guests an agile descent into the sea. surely this opening towards the sea with a ladder that folds together with a bathroom platform was the most complex thing realized considering the high safety standards associated with a work of this type. even when this terrace is closed it becomes an integral part of the yacht’s structure., the exteriors are characterized by the presence of a large cockpit divided into three well disengaged areas: a living area with a bar with adjoining kitchen, the command post of the boat and a third relaxation area with comfortable seating., the interiors have been designed to house up to 14 guests in seven cabins, including a full-beam master suite and as described above with a private balcony a feature that is not usually found on a sailboat., the materials used for the interiors have been carefully chosen to create environments that are not only elegant but also welcoming to create a comfortable atmosphere., to achieve all this, it was decided to use precious velvets and leathers for almos all surface coatings including drawers and furnishings., at the end of the work, mark tucker, director of design unlimited issued the following declaration:, “working on pink gin vi was a great and exciting challenge. the new yacht is not so much an evolution of the previous pink gin, but a revolution in design; a superyacht that reflects the owner’s personality and passions., it was a six-year journey that pushed the boundaries of design to create a tactile interior that combines international art, fashion and experience., design unlimited paid particular attention to the collaboration of the external spaces of the bridge with the interiors. the result is a seamless transition, perfectly in tune with the outdoor lifestyle of the superyacht property., pink gin vi is not just a superyacht, it is a declaration of individuality and creativity. “, main specifications, overall length: 53.70 m; length of the waterline: 44.80 m;, beam: 9.55 m; immersion: 4.50 m – 7.00 m;, displacement 250 t; ballast 75 t;, naval architecture: judel / vrolijk & co; interior design: design unlimited;, fuel: 18,000 l; main engine: man v12 1400 hp;, maximum speed: 20 knots..

Baltic-Yachts-owner-Hans-Georg-Näder

On board with Baltic Yachts owner Hans Georg Näder

Hans Georg Näder was so impressed with his 46 metre Baltic Pink Gin he bought the company. But for the German entrepreneur, super sailing yachts are only one part of his innovative empire, as David Edwards discovers...

Hans Georg Näder was cruising in Sardinia last summer on his 46 metre sloop Pink Gin, which is currently listed for sale. With him was Henry Hawkins, his long-time captain whom Näder appointed CEO of Baltic Yachts when he bought the Finnish yard in 2013. They spied a Tesla, prompting Hawkins to ask his boss whether he would ever buy one of the American electric cars. “I said, never. I’m branded, you know: Porsche, Porsche and Porsche,” recalls Näder, a proud German born 55 years ago in Duderstadt, Lower Saxony, who still lives there, as well as in Berlin and Munich, and, as CEO and president of prosthetics maker Ottobock, is one of Germany’s most successful entrepreneurs.

“Four weeks ago I ordered the Tesla SUV. We had the chance in Porto Cervo to test drive one. I’ve never experienced something like this. The head of Tesla Germany brought an SUV down and we went close to the Romazzino [hotel] and he said ‘stop’. And then full power. It was like on a Ducati. I’ve never seen something like this in a car.”

That, in a nutshell, encapsulates Näder. It would be easy for him to be stuck in his successful ways. He was 28 when he took over the family firm, founded in 1919 by his grandfather Otto Bock, who made wooden legs for WWI victims, and continued by his father Max Näder. Under Hans, turnover has risen from €100m to €1.2bn, staff numbers have increased from 1,000 to 8,000 and the company now does business in 56 countries. Ottobock was once again the official technical service at the Rio 2016 Paralympics, repairing and maintaining the prosthetics, orthotics and wheelchairs of all athletes for the 13th successive Games. The company has done extremely well. Professor Näder has done extremely well. There are Porsches, plural.

The company’s work and achievements are celebrated at the Ottobock Science Centre in Berlin, and it’s here that you begin to see how Näder likes to do things differently. Interactive displays explain how patients can now use prosthetic arms intuitively to grip and pick up things thanks to ground-breaking nerve and muscle surgery. Or how the latest prosthetic leg not only uses a microprocessor in the knee joint to better understand a patient’s gait but it is also waterproof, allowing a whole new range of activities for the amputee.

Standing confidently just off Potsdamer Platz and along from the Brandenburg Gate, the centre, built in 2009 and visited by more than one million people since, resembles the gleaming white superstructure of a modern yacht. That is no coincidence. Yachts have been in Näder’s blood from the minute, aged six, that he first set foot in an Optimist. He bought his first sailing boat at 23, an 11.3 metre called Pink Gin that was built by Sweden Yachts , and progressed steadily through four more Pink Gins towards the 54 metre Pink Gin VI that Baltic will launch for him in May next year.

But what is really in his blood is innovation. Each of his many boats has not just been bigger, they have been better. They use better materials, better technology, better design. Now he has his own yard, the scope for innovation is huge.

He arrives for our meeting, at the science centre, straight from another of his Berlin bases – the Open Innovation Space, housed in the grounds of a former brewery that Näder is converting. Under his arm is another arm, a carbon fibre model produced by 3D printer.

In his other hand is a very flesh-like silicon arm. He is clearly proud and excited by what’s going on at the Open Innovation Space. “I created a platform where young start-ups, mainly in digital transformation and production, can come,” he says. “We act like a fitness club so you sign in and you can use the machines and all you pay is the minutes or seconds you use the machines. You have to see it and then you understand.”

So we do. And it’s striking to see this casually dressed fifty-something billionaire strolling around chatting to the twenty-something tech types starting out on their innovative journey. Ottobock design engineers work here too, among other things developing an app with Adidas so that patients can follow a recuperative physiotherapy routine much more effectively. The open structure of the space encourages collaboration and Näder has a track record for bringing bright young minds into his company. The professor is in his element.

Ask him who he admires and the answers are telling. First, the patriot and businessman in him says Hasso Plattner, co-founder of software giant SAP – “the most successful start-up in Germany after WWII”. He then goes on… “I admire what the Silicon Valley guys are doing. They are changing the world in a radical and disruptive way.” This word keeps cropping up. “I like it. Not many people are able to think disruptive.” And this disruption is not just in the world of medical technology but in relation to yachts and Baltic in particular.

“Over the years at Ottobock we changed technical orthopaedics very often in an almost disruptive way, creating mechatronic upper extremity prosthetics when even the word mechatronic did not exist. I think it’s the same in shipbuilding. The heritage and character of craftsmanship and shipbuilding is a base for disruptive change. We just delivered one boat to a famous Italian sailor and we think it’s the most advanced sailing boat ever built.”

He’s referring to 39.6 metre racer-cruiser My Song , with its interchangeable mainsails and Baltic’s custom retractable propulsion system, but there’s so much more that can be done he thinks. “Yachting has a lot of potential because, if you look into boats, not all technologies are really state of the art. Some are quite old fashioned. If you look at the plumbing, this is not state of the art. Or hydraulics. Or engines. I’ve just ordered the SUV from Tesla and if this [electric engine] works in a car, why shouldn’t it work in a boat?

“It’s nice to have at Baltic a luxury brand where we can drive innovation. It’s also cool to have owners who are keen to be disruptive with big boats. So from my point of view what we do at the moment at Baltic is so much cooler than the first Wallys were.”

One such example is the Arrow460-Granturismo, a very disruptive Mercedes-Benz-styled 14 metre powerboat that Baltic is making components for and assembling at its Jakobstad yard in northern Finland as part of its collaboration with Silver Arrows Marine.

“I love the head of design of Mercedes [Gorden Wagener]. He’s giving this brand a new design language and it’s really successful. You see other automotive brands like Audi or Volkswagen, they are missing their next evolution of design, and turnover goes down.”

Näder and Hawkins have big plans for Baltic. They want to expand its refit operations, which already extend to facilities at STP in Mallorca. Among recent refits were 32 metre Wally Nariida – “when the owner came out to Finland he was so happy to get an even better than new Nariida back” – and Sunny Day , the 24.7 metre Alalunga motor yacht, launched in 1989, that was owned by Näder’s father and has just been given a complete overhaul by Baltic. “It’s amazing what kind of character we were able to keep and what kind of new DNA we injected into this boat.”

The yard known for its super sailing yachts is dipping a toe into own-brand motor yacht waters, too. It has a custom 23.8 metre, designed by Mani Frers, son of Germán, in build and the company is negotiating to buy an old Italian motor yacht marque. “If somebody shows up who brings technology and quality, and having young guys doing cool designs, I think there’s a market,” says Näder.

Large composite sailing yachts remain the bread and butter and Näder himself is awaiting possibly the best slice yet. His sixth Pink Gin will be the largest carbon-fibre sloop in the world and will feature an electrical “forced feedback” steering system, developed with the help of Swiss automotive engineer Peter Kägi – another of those state-of-the-art upgrades. “I think the new Pink Gin will be my mountain peak,” says Näder. “It’s like with a house. First you build a big house, then the children leave, then you don’t need the big house and you go to an apartment.”

Näder, whose two daughters are in their twenties and who is divorced from his second wife, is already planning his post Pink Gin “downsizing”. He is rather taken with the BlackCat 50 metre catamaran concept that Baltic is now involved with and which it presented at the Monaco Yacht Show . “We had five, six parties very interested,” says Näder. “For me, as I’m getting older, maybe _Pink Gin V_I for the next 10 years and then build such a catamaran?” It could be just what he’s looking for to bring a new, exciting audience into yachting. “The young guys from Silicon Valley, who are much more green and ecologically driven in their ideas, people like Musk, Zuckerberg and so on, these are candidates for disruptive sailing yacht concepts.”

There is always the next thing. This is what drives him. “It’s, how we say in German, neugierig. You’re curious to find out. I have this in my genome, having I think more than 1,000 patents worldwide and constantly meeting people who innovate. Innovation is not for the sole purpose of innovation. Innovation is the means to find solutions.”
