Testimonials.

sailboat rental tahoe

"Highlight of our weekend! Hands down the best part of our weekend in the Lake Tahoe area!! Signing up for the sunset cruise was done over the phone because there was only 1 spot left and there were 2 of us wanting to go. The young lady who helped register us was super kind as was all the staff on the boat. Captain Tyler and his crew were amazing and it was a real pleasure to sail with them!!"

Fort Worth, TX Ellen H.

"Spent the afternoon of the 4th on a 2 hour sail. Wonderful way to spend an afternoon on the lake. Great crew. Serves beer/wine and did a good job if controlling the partners on the boat. A variety of folks on the boat - families, couples and small group (4). We were able to distance on the boat from others on the trip. Very enjoyable! Personable crew and beautiful views."

Philadelphia, PA MS F

"Picturesque tour of the lake! I had a blast! It was such a great way to experience the lake in a non touristy way. My wife and I had a great time and met a couple new friends on the boat.""

LAKE TAHOE’S PREMIERE SAILING CHARTER SINCE 1998

In 2015, Captain Tyler became the new partner in ownership we added a power yacht called the Tahoe Dreamer for bareboat charters, along with our iconic 50’ sailboat, the Tahoe Cruz. Our captains and crew know this lake and its sailing conditions better than anyone on the water.

North Lake Tahoe Boat Rental started with a passion for being on the water, the feeling of relaxation and yearning to share that experience with others.  We had come to the realization that there are too many people who visit Tahoe, that do not have the ability to get out on the Lake. We’re here to fix that.  We are attempting to include as many people as possible in sharing our passion.

Our crew will help you every step of the way. Each boat is guided by a dockhand to help plan your families whole vacation, not only your boat rental. We know you are here to have a good time and we don’t want to stop you from doing that. You’re on Tahoe Time, we get it.

Our affordable pricing (by Tahoe standards) is designed to allow everyone to enjoy the beauty Lake Tahoe has to offer.  NLTBR only rents the newest boats so you are not stranded in the middle of the lake on a 2001 Sea Ray. We provide complimentary tubes, cooler and ice for every rental when requested.

We have proudly been serving customers from Tahoe Vista, Kings Beach, Incline Village, Truckee, Tahoe City, Sunnyside and entire the North Lake area for the last 8 summers!

"Steve was great! Boats were clean. I'll be back for sure. We were thinking about renting a boat with a different company but we found Tahoe luxury charters and we were so happy to have a captain, absolutely no stress, they took amazing care of us and we had the best time."

"My girl friends and I booked a full day trip during a bachelorette weekend, the boat itself was beautiful and full of amenities; having a private restroom, hors d' oeuvres, lunch, and wonderful staff. What made the day so worth while was the captains knowledge of all of the hidden spots on the lake that they took us to that were not swarmed with other tourists allowing us to enjoy a perfect day on the lake! I already have another trip booked for this summer with my family and can't wait!"

"My family and I came to Tahoe for my Dad's 60th and this was our favorite day by far! Our Captain Robbie took us to all the best spots. We enjoyed sunbathing, sipping champagne, and some of us even cliff jumped into turquoise blue waters. This is truly one of the best ways to enjoy the lake. Thank you Tahoe Luxury Charters!"

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING

"Tahoe Waves was an amazing combination of value, service and communication!!  It was so enjoyable, we raved about it for weeks. We had an absolute blast and will definitely be using Tahoe Waves again!!!"

                                                          - Jeff M. via Yelp

"Look no further! As a local who will never afford a boat, I wanted to show my friends from out of town the best view of the lake- from a boat. We had previously booked with another agency and it fell through last minute. I called Cooper and he had a boat there in twenty minutes. The liability forms were straightforward and simple, and Greg, his employee couldn't have been more patient and cordial. I'll use these guys as long as I live here. Thanks again fellas!"

- Michael Murray via Trip Advisor

"They have a great team. I would definitely rent from them again. Their hospitality was unquestionable. Thank you!"

"Rented an 18' boat from these guys for 4 hours on a recent trip. It was a great way to see the lake. The office was very helpful in providing us a map of the lake and what to explore while out on the lake. I highly recommend this place for your Lake Tahoe boat rentals."

"Would have liked a longer flight because it was so great. Had reservations for two, 500 ft flights and we showed up with a third for a ride along only which they were able to accommodate. Total of groups on the boat were us (one adult, two teens) and two other couples."

"I was up in Tahoe celebrating my birthday. The weather did not want to cooperate. Even though my parasailing had to be rescheduled twice due to lake wind advisories they did a great job keeping me updated and made sure to get me in before i had to fly back home. It was a cool and cloudy morning but I loved it and our guys on the boat were great!"

"We had very nice vacations in Lake Tahoe and excellent experience with this marina. We were able to do kayak, paddle boat, jet ski and parasailing. It is a little bit expensive so have your budget ready, but it is well deserved. The staff is nice and willing to help you during every different experience. I recommend it for water sports lovers."

25' Sea Ray Sundancer Fully Equipped! For rent in South Lake Tahoe

Our group of seven had an incredible time on the boat with Captain Kimo and Joseph. They were not only highly skilled but also extremely friendly, ensuring we enjoyed every moment. Their engaging personalities and fun stories made the trip even more memorable. We highly recommend their service for an unforgettable boating adventure!

21ft Bayliner in South Lake Tahoe

Jason was the exact Captain we were hoping for: knowledgable, kind, and super easy to work with. He accommodated multiple requests we had and offered a beautiful adventure of Lake Tahoe. His chill but professional demeanor worked perfectly for our family and guest!

Elisa

We booked this for my bachelorette trip and would do it all over again!! The company was so nice, the girl that checked us in was super nice and talkative, our captain JB knew all of the spots on the lake we would enjoy. It was just a fun day! Highly recommend:)

Paulette is wonderful and very responsive prior to the activity. She showed us some great spots and did everything she could to make it a memorable and enjoyable outing. Couldn't recommend booking with her and this boat more! It was our favorite activity from the weekend.

Bayliner 25ft Luxury Pontoon Charter in South Lake Tahoe

This was a great experience overall! There was an issue with booking but it did get resolved. Spencer was our captain and highly recommend him! We had 5 adults and 4 toddlers! He did great with the kids and knew so much history about Tahoe and was able to answer all our questions. We would definitely book this again and request Spencer!

Great, comfortable boat with wakeboarding gear in good conditions. Al showed us the reins and set us free! He was communicative throughout and proactive in explaining the weather and how it may affect our trip.

The entire experience from signing up for the ride till hand off was well orchestrated. The signing up process was smooth and most of it was online. The boat was clean and we were given a proper guidance of the boat operations. The drive into the Emerald bay was memorable.

Extremely efficient check in process and helpful staff. They had all the boats ready for us upon arrival and explained everything we needed to do for the trip. Easy to get to and plenty of selection.

We reserved a 20’ boat for a half day (3 hours paid, 4th hour free). Reservations were very easy to make and are recommended. We picked a very busy time so it did take about an hour to get checked in and on the boat. Our 4 hours didn’t start until we were on the boat. Staff was very friendly and knowledgeable. We are repeat customers and they always treat us right!

Everything was top-notch. The folks doing the paperwork were efficient, informative, and worked quickly. The guys dealing with the boats were friendly and did a good job running over the boat operations. Highly recommended.

Oh my goodness such a blast!! Mark and Pete were so much fun! My mom wanted to go 1000' up for her 80th birthday, so she, my nephew and I went - absolutely breathtaking and the guys made it so special and such an absolute blast! They took tons of pictures for us (that turned out great!) and we also opted to rent their GoPro for great shots (getting to take the video card with us. We now want to come back and rent the entire boat in September with more family - super memorable and amazing!!

Everything was extremely smooth. Reserved a pontoon online, check-in was easy and took exactly how long they estimated it would. The pontoon was even nicer than I expected and everyone was super friendly. Couldn't have asked for a better time.

Emerald Bay with the Perfect Boat – Absolutely Breathtaking

Our most highly requested destination, the Bay is arguably the most visited sight in all of South Lake Tahoe.  The entrance is shallow and shows off that Tahoe blue water like none other.  As we slowly cruise deeper, towering mountains surround us and immerse you and your friends and family in an epic Sierra vista. Vikingsholm is a 38 bedroom mansion at the end of the Bay and a great tourist destination in and of itself.

Feel free to drop anchor and just chill in the serene waters and soak up some of those legendary Lake Tahoe boat rays.  Our guides can take you up close enough to enjoy the hike around Fannette island, and you can enjoy the view from the castle at the top with a looking glass window back out towards Lake Tahoe.  It’s pretty much the best place for Lake Tahoe boat rentals to go.

The Bay was sculpted by receding glaciers during the Pleistocene era, and owes much of it’s dramatic, rising mountains to these millions of years old natural processes. Emerald Bay has been a natural magnet for boating activity since the late 1800’s when early settlers assembled huge crews of workers to build housing and construct large sailboats to navigate it’s natural inherent beauty.

Although there are endless hiking trails in the immediate vicinity, the best way to see it is with one of our South Tahoe boat rentals!

Check out Ski Beach when you Visit Lake Tahoe

baldwin beach in south lake tahoe

Lake Tahoe is one of the most beautiful vacation spots in the world. It’s no wonder that millions of tourists flock here each year to enjoy the crystal-clear waters, fresh mountain air, and endless recreational opportunities. Among the many activities to do in Lake Tahoe, renting pontoon boats and taking them to Ski Beach is an experience that should not be missed.

Ski Beach is a popular destination in the South shore area, located just a few miles from the casinos and Heavenly Ski Resort. It’s a great place to relax, soak up the sun, and take a dip in the lake. However, getting there can be a hassle if you don’t have Tahoe boat rentals. Fortunately, renting a pontoon boat is easy and affordable, and it can make your trip to Ski Beach a memorable experience.

Here are some reasons why renting a pontoon boat and taking it to Ski Beach is a great idea for your Lake Tahoe vacation:

Enjoy the Scenery – South Shore is one of the most beautiful places on Earth!

One of the biggest advantages of renting a boat on beautiful Lake Tahoe is the opportunity to enjoy the stunning scenery from the water. The lake is surrounded by the Sierra Nevada mountains, which offer a breathtaking backdrop for your South Lake boat adventure. You can see wildlife, waterfalls, and other natural wonders that are not visible from the shore. Taking a boat ride to Ski Beach will allow you to see the beauty of Lake Tahoe for the first time, in a whole new way.

Avoid Traffic and Crowds – Beat the heat with a Tahoe Boat Rental

Driving to Ski Beach can be a hassle, especially during peak tourist season. South Shore traffic can be heavy, and finding parking can be a challenge. By renting a boat, you can avoid the crowds and get to Ski Beach faster and easier. You won’t have to worry about parking, and you can enjoy the lake and the scenery without the distractions of crowds and noise.  We try to help you through your “South Tahoe Boat Daze.”  🙂

Have Fun on the Water

Renting a boat is a great way to have fun on the water. You can explore the lake, swim, and even fish if you have the proper equipment. You can also bring your own water toys, such as tubes or water skis, and enjoy the thrill of being pulled behind a boat. Ski Beach is a great place to anchor your boat and enjoy the water activities with family and friends and play with your South Lake Tahoe rentals.

Relax on the Beach

Ski Beach is a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. It’s a great place to relax, soak up the sun, and enjoy the scenery. The beach is clean, well-maintained, and offers all the amenities you need for a day at the lake. Take one of our South boat rentals to Ski Beach, you can have your own private beach and avoid the crowds.

Create Memories

Finally, renting a boat and taking it to Ski Beach is a great way to create memories that will last a lifetime. Lake Tahoe is a unique and beautiful destination, and exploring it by boat is an experience that you will never forget. Whether you’re traveling with family or friends, renting a boat and spending the day at Ski Beach can be a highlight of your Lake Tahoe vacation.

In conclusion, renting a boat and taking it to Ski Beach in South Lake Tahoe is a great idea for your Lake Tahoe vacation. You can enjoy the scenery, avoid traffic and crowds, have fun on the water, relax on the beach, and create memories that will last a lifetime. So, next time you visit Lake Tahoe, be sure to rent a boat and explore the lake in a whole new way.

Safety Orientation + US Coast Guard Information

One of the reasons we always ship our top of the line charters with a qualified Captain is to take the responsibility off your group and allow everyone aboard to relax.  Nobody wants to stress on their South Tahoe boat rental day.  Your Captain will do a full safety briefing, lay down any ground rules as far as safety goes, show you where all our life jackets and all other USCG required safety equipment is located, and set sail!  One basic rule we have is no more than three people on the upper deck at a time, and for instance, no one on the upper deck while we are underway.  We always provide all the life jackets, VHF Radio set to channel 16, life rings, fire extinguishers, flares and all other safety equipment which is required by law, and more importantly, are just common sense items to have on board.  Beautiful Lake Tahoe can turn into more of a small ocean instead of lake at the blink of an eye, and it always pays to be prepared and self reliant.

Battle Born Boat Rentals

Rent a boat from Battle Born Boat Rentals and enjoy the best view of Tahoe around – from the middle of the Lake! Our brand new double decker pontoon party boat rentals include seating for 13 guests, Bluetooth six speaker sound system, waterslide, bimini top, pop up changing room and more! All you need to do is arrive and have a great time out on the water.

Lake Tahoe ranks number 3 in boat rentals on Getmyboat

News News | Jun 13, 2024

Getmyboat, aka the Airbnb of boats, recently released its rankings of most popular boating destinations in California based on the last 12 months, and South Lake Tahoe ranked number three on the list behind Marina del Rey and San Diego. Tahoe City ranks number eight on the list of California’s top 10 places to get out on the lake.

Getmyboat launched in 2013 “with the vision of making the joy of boating accessible to everyone” and has since become the largest boat rental and charter marketplace worldwide, managing more than 150,000 listings in 184 countries.

From weekend jet ski rentals to vacation yachts, Getmyboat connects boat aficionados on both sides in 9300 destinations to create memorable (and profitable) experiences.

“Both of the owners are from San Francisco and they were out on a boat one day and noticed all of these unused boats sitting out in the water so they figured out a way to help people who wanted to get out on the lake match up with independent boat owners to get their boats utilized more,” says Getmyboat Marketing Manager Val Steif about what prompted the idea for Getmyboat.

Lake Tahoe is #3 in California and ranks #14 in all the US in terms of it being one of the most motorized-booked places in the past 12 months. There are 111 listings on the entire lake; 70 of them are in South Lake Tahoe and 40 of them are in North Lake Tahoe (including Tahoe City, Kings Beach, Carnelian Bay, and Incline Village). The most popular boats being rented out are wakeboard and pontoon boats.

sailboat rental tahoe

Support Local Journalism

Getmyboat believes that South Lake Tahoe ranks #3 because of its clear waters and alpine setting. According to its report, “The lake’s pristine clarity and scenic mountainous backdrop provide an unparalleled visual experience. The accessibility to multiple marinas and waterfront facilities, combined with the picturesque surroundings and a plethora of onshore recreational options, establishes South Lake Tahoe as an attractive boating destination.”

The most popular boat rented out in South Lake Tahoe is a power boat at an average hourly rental rate of $158 (an average total trip cost is $771). Powerboats are also the most popular in Tahoe City (#8 on the list), which offers similar scenery and experiences. The average hourly rental price of a boat on the North Shore is $250 (an average total trip cost being $1,200). “Wakesurfing and wakeboarding are popular activities to enjoy by boat in Tahoe City,” its report says.

When asked if Getmyboat competes with charter boat companies, Steif says yes and no.

“Anyone can list their boats with us; the vast majority have independent charter companies, but we provide 24/7 customer service, payment technology, and advertising. Getmyboat is a tool to get more customers, for both charters and independent boat owners,” she adds.

Since every boat operator must have a California Boater Card now to drive a motorized watercraft on Lake Tahoe, most boat rentals are captain chartered since it is up to the boat owner to figure out if a renter has their card or not.

“Seventy-one percent are captain charters, which is good for those who just want to get out on the lake and have a drink,” Steif says.

She adds that they’ve heard some amazing stories from boat owners about how Getmyboat changed their own career paths, too.

“Some people got their captain’s license and now have a fulltime charter business with Getmyboat. There is a guy in New Orleans who has a sailboat and he started renting it out, and now he sails around the world doing that full time,” Steif says.

Some of the more interesting boat rentals listed with Getmyboat and operate on Lake Tahoe include a Melges 24 Race Boat (with an open cockpit, retractable bowsprit, and an asymmetrical spinnaker available to rent out of Tahoe City); a double decker pontoon with a slide on the North Shore; and a 40-ft. Chris Craft Venetian water taxi in South Lake Tahoe that holds up to 20 people.

“There’s some last-minute bookings still available for Memorial Day but it’s never too early to start planning for the Fourth of July,” Steif adds.

How Much to Tip a Fishing Guide: Learn the proper tipping etiquette

sailboat rental tahoe

Table of Contents

Last Updated on June 19, 2024 by Boatsetter Team

When you go on a guided fishing trip there’s an advertised price, but there are other costs of a fishing charter and one that shouldn’t be overlooked is tipping the captain and/or mate. Just what an appropriate tip is will change with the situation, too, because some guides work alone, others work with a mate, and you may want to tip more or less depending on the level of service.

It’s important to differentiate between charters and guides at this point, because although there’s no set definition for either, most charter boats have mates who often work for tips and tips alone. Some larger charters that take out more people than the standard “six pack” crew of six may even have multiple mates. But captains who work alone and take out smaller parties, on the other hand, are usually referred to as guides.

Tipping a small boat fishing guide

As a general rule of thumb, the standard tipping etiquette you’d use in a restaurant applies to fishing guides. Anything under 15 percent of the cost of the trip would be thought of as a penalty for a poor experience, 20 percent would be for meeting expectations, and 25 percent would be a bonus.

Remember that if you rent a fishing boat with a captain, as far as tipping goes that still counts as hiring a guide or booking a charter. Although the terminology and the booking process may be a bit different, they’ll still be working to make sure you have a great day on the water and catch as many fish as possible.

Book your next fishing boat rental

Tipping on charters

fishing charter tipping

On charter boats working with a mate, the mate is usually (though not always) working just for the tip. The same rates apply, except that instead of handing the tip to the captain you’d give it to the mate or mates. When there are multiple mates it’s okay to hand the tip to one of them, as tips are generally pooled and split, but if you want to tip a specific mate extra because they worked particularly hard or were especially pleasant, be sure to tell them that and tip them separately from the rest of the crew.

The same goes for captains who do an especially good job; tip the mates separately, and then approach the captain. Also, know that in some cases the captain will still share their tips with the mate(s) or ask you to pass it on to them, but either way they’ll still appreciate the gesture.

When you’re planning a group charter where the cost of the trip will be shared, be sure to give everyone a heads-up about tipping ahead of time. People who don’t regularly fish on charter boats may not realize that tipping is expected, and many people don’t carry much cash these days in case they’re caught unaware.

Tipping guides and charters for the experience

tipping your fishing guide

It’s always important to remember that a guide or captain, no matter how good he or she may be at their job, can’t control the weather or whether the fish will bite. Either factor can contribute to having a disappointing trip, but that isn’t necessarily a reflection of how the person is doing their job. More important is attitude, how hard he or she works to try to make the trip a success, and honesty.

Did the captain and/or mate greet you with a smile, and stay positive no matter what? Did they race around the boat all day keeping the baits fresh and the lines set, even if the fish weren’t biting? If they’re a pleasure to be around and they give it their all, you can’t blame them for rough seas or slow fishing.

The very best captains may even give you a heads-up if the fishing is particularly slow or it will be uncomfortably windy and rough, and may suggest rescheduling. When this happens, remember that they’ve willingly given up their income for that day to help ensure your experience is a positive one — and when you do eventually go, you should bear that in mind when it’s time to tip them.

The bottom line ? Tipping fishing guides and charter boat crew isn’t any different from tipping in other venues. If someone has done their best and you’ve had fun, tip them accordingly.

Here are Lake Tahoe’s best beaches (along with parking tips)

With soft golden sand and clear, blue waters reflecting the rugged peaks of the Sierra Nevada , Lake Tahoe ’s beaches are astonishingly beautiful.

There’s a catch, though: of this alpine lake’s 72 miles of shoreline, only 34 miles are open to the public . And that public shoreline is in high demand indeed; Lake Tahoe’s beaches are often at capacity from Memorial Day through the end of September.

To put it mildly, public beach access here can be confusing to first-time visitors. Which is why we’ve put together this list of the best beaches in Lake Tahoe – including tips for how to gain entry.

People on the beach at Sand Harbor State Park, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA

1. Sand Harbor State Park

Chances are you’ve seen it in pictures. Sand Harbor ’s sandy coves, enormous boulders and bright turquoise water make it one of the most photographed spots on the lake. One of four Nevada state parks in and around Lake Tahoe, Sand Harbor is home to several beaches. Main Beach is a 2500-ft-long strip of wide, golden sand. Just north of the visitor center, small coves with dramatic rock formations offer visitors platforms from which to jump in the water or soak up the sun.

Sand Harbor is one of Lake Tahoe’s most accessible beaches , and features a long, wheelchair-friendly boardwalk that overlooks the lake. Other amenities include an underwater dive park, picnic areas, barbecue grills, restrooms, a visitor center, seasonal kayak rentals and a boat launch.

In summer, it also plays host to the Lake Tahoe Shakespeare Festival , which produces Broadway musicals, orchestras and tribute shows, in addition to works by the Bard.

Planning tip: If you’re visiting during high season, it’s wise to arrive before the gates open (usually 7am in summer). Once the parking lot has filled, the entrance won’t reopen until around 5pm, regardless of how many people leave in the interim.

Parking is $10 for vehicles with Nevada plates and $15 for everyone else. If you’re attending a festival show, you can purchase parking in advance – which is only valid after 5pm on the day of your performance.

A child jumps into the water at Emerald Bay, Lake Tahoe, California, USA

2. Emerald Bay State Park

Emerald Bay State Park , on the California side of the lake, is rugged and wild. A highlight here is the unusual Vikingsholm Castle , a historic Scandinavian-style estate you can tour. The wide, sandy beach in front of the house is a popular place for picnics and swimming, offering stellar views of the bay and Fannette Island (the only island in the lake). A second beach is located a mile north, adjacent to a boat-in campground.

Planning tip: You’ll have to hike about a mile down a steep hill to get to the beaches of Emerald Bay State Park – which means you’ll also have to hike a mile to get back up. Fortunately, there are restrooms, a seasonal visitor center and kayak rentals by the shore.

Parking is $5 per vehicle and is extremely competitive from Memorial Day through the end of September. If you can’t be there first thing in the morning, space typically opens up again after 3pm.

A gorgeous sunset reflects off of Lake Tahoe at Kiva Beach in the summer near South Lake Tahoe, California

3. Kiva Beach

Comprised of sand and rock, and boasting expansive views of Mt Tallac and the Sierra Nevada, 600ft-long Kiva is the perhaps the most dog-friendly beach in Lake Tahoe. With a creek, marsh and forest close by, it’s a great place for enjoying nature. Seasonal amenities include restrooms, a picnic shelter and a beach volleyball court. Kiva Beach is generally less crowded than other Lake Tahoe beaches, so if you’re planning a last-minute trip to enjoy some sun and sand, it’s a good bet.

Planning tip: Dogs must remain leashed at all times. Though parking is limited, Kiva Beach is only a half-mile walk from Taylor Creek Visitor Center and accessible via the Pope-Baldwin Bike Path.

Colorful stand-up paddleboards on the beach at Commons Beach, Tahoe City, Lake Tahoe, California, USA

4. Commons Beach

The four-acre Commons Beach Park in downtown Tahoe City is one of the liveliest places on the Lake Tahoe waterfront. In summers, free Sunday-afternoon concerts and Wednesday-night movies on the beach rank among the best free things to do in Lake Tahoe . In addition to hosting some of the lake’s most popular events, Commons Beach offers picnic tables, barbecue grills, a climbing wall, a playground and a sandy beach for swimming and sunbathing.

Planning tip: Parking is free but limited. Instead of driving yourself, we recommend using TART Connect , North Lake Tahoe’s free, curb-to-curb, on-demand ride service.

Sunset at Chimney Beach, Lake Tahoe, Nevada, USA

5. Chimney Beach

Chimney Beach lies on national forest land, about two miles south of Sand Harbor State Park. The parking lot is on the opposite side of the trailhead on Hwy 28; from there, it’s a steep, half-mile hike to get down to the beach. (You’ll find no amenities by the shore – but there are portable restrooms and trash cans in the parking lot.) The beach itself is lovely, a curved strip of sand with lagoons and colossal boulders on and off the lakeshore. It takes its name from the stone chimney standing on the sand, which is all that remains of an old caretaker’s cabin. Since it’s off the beaten path, this beach doesn’t tend to get as crowded as its neighbor Sand Harbor.

Local tip: A trail connects Chimney Beach to Secret Cove, Boaters Beach, Creek Beach and Whale Beach. All are lovely, with the same turquoise waters and smooth rock features that mark this part of the lake. Due to their remoteness, these coves are usually frequented by locals who have long treated them as clothing-optional beaches.

6. Private Lake Tahoe beaches accessible to hotel guests

Public beach access can be tricky during summer, but there is a workaround. If you want to avoid long lines and uncertainty about parking – and you’re willing to pay for the privilege – a few Lake Tahoe hotels provide private beach access to guests.

Courtesy-The-Ritz-Carlton-Lake-Tahoe---Lake-Club---Exterior---Master-Craft-Dock---Summer.jpg

The Ritz-Carlton Lake Tahoe operates a Lake Club with a private beach . Exclusive to hotel guests who pay an extra fee, the Lake Club has many perks, including a shuttle service, kayak and SUP rentals, chef-prepared food and soft drinks (alcoholic beverages are an additional charge), an outdoor whirlpool spa and access to luxury speedboat rentals from MasterCraft.

courtesy-lake-tahoe-nevada-hyatt-regency-TVLLT-Beach-Recreation-Cabana-play.jpg

The Hyatt Regency Lake Tahoe Resort, Spa, and Casino is located across the street from a private beach in Incline Village. Hotel guests can reserve complimentary lounge chairs and cabanas; the resort also opens a seasonal open-air restaurant, seasonal floating bar and year-round fine-dining restaurant on the waterfront.

DMOLAKETAHOE-Edgewood-Lodge-pool-RM.jpg

Edgewood Tahoe Resort is one of the few true waterfront hotels in Lake Tahoe. Its long, sandy beach features lawn games and Adirondack chairs. Lounge chairs and rental cabanas are available a few steps away, at the pool.

Paradise found in Tahoe City

TAHOE CITY, Calif. – As Stick Figure’s “Paradise” played through the speakers, my daughter and I turned left into the parking lot of The Inn at Boatworks in Tahoe City. This rustic yet recently renovated inn built in 1959 would be our home base for an adventure-filled weekend on Lake Tahoe’s North Shore.

We got out, found the lobby and were greeted by Mark Dean, general manager of the Boatworks Mall and The Inn at Boatworks.

“Because of the access to the lake and the dock, we have 90% occupancy rate in the summer,” Dean said. “July is crazy. It’s absolutely fun!”

Guests can take advantage of complimentary cruiser bikes, paddleboards, snow shoes and discounted Palisades Tahoe ski passes depending on the season.

After settling into our corner suite with a gorgeous lake view, we immersed ourselves in Tahoe City’s vibrant scene. We headed to Boatworks Mall on the water directly behind the hotel.

At Tahoe City Chocolates Ev Akay, the owner’s son, enlightened us on his craft of making mouthwatering truffles, caramels, and barks using all-natural ingredients like fresh fruit and roasted nuts.

“We make the best and find the most amazing for everything else from around the world,” Ev said.

I tried the all-natural fruit jelly cassis candy. It had intensity, nuance, and melted in my mouth.

My daughter and I tried the homemade blackberry truffles. Delicious!

The truffles were rich bittersweet chocolate, fresh cream, real vanilla, just blackberries, no flavoring, and no sugar. “Just the sugar in the chocolate is all you need,” Ev explained.

It was interesting to hear the candy maker explain his craft.

“Caramels we also have wrapped because the best caramel doesn’t need chocolate,” Ev said. “It should stand on its own and be its own star.”

For the barks, Ev, and his father, Mike, roast the nuts themselves. That’s the secret ingredient to Tahoe City Chocolates’ toffee.

Then at Kiss and Makeup, Jennifer Holmes applied her clean, hypoallergenic cosmetics line designed for Tahoe’s high altitude.

“Makeup is not something to hide behind, but rather a tool to enhance your natural beauty,” Holmes explained.

Refreshed and looking our best, we headed to Tahoe Wine Collective for a tasting flight accompanied by a decadent cheese plate. The cozy spot celebrates boutique wines and craft beers from the Sierra Nevada region.

“We decided to create a place where these little known regions and producers can be highlighted,” according to Tahoe Wine Collective’s website. “Enjoy the laid-back, carefree feeling that we bring on Tahoe time.”

Dani Kenney, who has a background as a private chef, helped us.

We took a window seat and got comfortable on the couches. Kenney brought my daughter tea, and me, bubbles, a white, a rose’, and a red.

As we started to play checkers, out came a delicious cheese plate with Irish organic cheddar and Point Reyes truffle toma, dried fruit, almonds, olives, fig spread, and crackers. Yum!

The cheese plate perfectly complemented my flight.

My first pour was Starfield Blanc de Blance from El Doardo, Calif. It had aromas of citrus with hints of freshly baked brioche followed by flavors of green apples, lemon curd and candied grapefruit with clean minerality and long-lasting elegant bubbles.

The second pour was Forlorn Hope Semillon from Calaveras, Calif. It had aromas of pear, vanilla, lemon, honeysuckle, and a hint of nutmeg. That was followed by a rich and layered finish that was lengthened by fresh acidity.

The third pour was 174 Rose’ from Truckee, Calif., with grapes from the Santa Lucia Highlands. It had aromas of strawberry and grapefruit followed by bright and refreshing flavors of white cherry, apricot, and hints of earthiness.

The final pour was E16 from Fair Play, Calif. It had aromas and flavors of black cherry, black plum, chocolate, vanilla, fennel, basil, and forest floor with a noticeable tannin and lengthy finish.

My favorites were the first and last pours.

From there we checked out Cruisers Academy that offers day and sunset sails, family lessons, training, and overnight adventures. We will be back to brush up on our sailing.

We walked down the waterfront path to the Tahoe City Marina and looked at the motor boats. There’s a 2 hour minimum, which will give you time to explore. Heads up, renters need to prove they’ve driven a motor boat.

From a distance, we saw The Tahoe Gal. It’s an iconic 120-passenger paddle wheeler that cruises daily to Emerald Bay and along the North and West Shores of Lake Tahoe.

Then we went to the SNOW Sports Museum and other stores in the Boatworks Mall before heading to the far end for our dinner reservation at Jake’s on the Lake.

We were early, but they didn’t mind. We were escorted to a table for two at the window, arguably the best seat in the house.

Wow, we looked at each other and smiled. With this set up we need to toast to the sunset, so we quickly chose cocktails.

sailboat rental tahoe

Nina was our server. She was quick, delightful, and engaging.

My daughter had a soda and I ordered a Forget Me Not, which is Ketel One vodka, lavender, lemon juice with a press finish, and dried French lavender. For each order, Jake’s on the Lake donates $1 to Keeping Memory Alive. It is a foundation for Alzheimer’s and dementia research.

We skipped the starters, soup, and salad, and went right to the main course. My daughter had clam and sausage linguine, and I ordered the Angus filet mignon medium.

Both were excellent choices.

I gave my daughter some steak. Her face lit up, and she asked for more.

I obliged because it was a huge filet. It came with grilled broccolini, mashed potatoes, caramelized cippolini onion with red wine demi-glace.

sailboat rental tahoe

The linguine had cherry tomatoes, roasted poblano cream sauce, queso fresco, and herbs.

We really didn’t have room for dessert, but each ordered one after we saw a delivery to a nearby table. Patrons there attested to everything on the dessert menu being delicious. Plus, my daughter and I can say two options were amazing and everything else looked mouthwatering.

We took a short walk to our hotel room, hopped in the comfortable beds, and turned in for the night.

My alarm went off at 6 a.m., and I headed to the shower to use Lather and Fizz locally made bath products provided by The Inn at Boatworks. I turned on the hot water and waited. After letting it run for what seemed like five minutes, I picked up my cell phone and left a message.

I quickly got a call back. The staff was on it.

As my daughter and I headed to Mountain Lotus Yoga on the bottom level of the Boatworks Mall, we saw water all over the parking lot. At least one pipe was broken, and the culprit was a mischievous bear.

The bear had broken the door to the crawl space under the inn and climbed inside. Then decided to hibernate.

We went to hot pilates, which was new for both of us. Mountain Lotus Yoga Manager Rosie Stoesser welcomed us.

Then we entered a room with mirrors on the walls. The result is “you’re literally lakefront surrounded by the lake,” Stoesser said.

Starting June 20, Mountain Lotus Yoga offers standup paddle board yoga every day pending good weather. Yoga clothes or a swimsuit, and water shoes are recommended.

It also offers Birkam hot yoga, hot vinyasa yoga, warm yin, and aerial yoga.

Because of numerous recommendations, afterward we headed to Fire Sign Cafe for Sunday brunch.

Fire Sign opened in 1978, and quickly became a Lake Tahoe tradition, according to its website. Fire Sign is owned by local restaurateurs and curated by seasoned chefs. The homemade food is made with love and from scratch.

“Fire Sign Cafe serves delicious, homemade, fresh food that is prepped daily by our chefs,” according to the website. From handcrafted baked goods, to homemade pesto, you will truly feel the comfort of coming home when you taste a bite.”

My daughter had a hot chocolate topped with whipped cream, french toast with real maple syrup, and an egg.

I had coffee and huevos rancheros. Fire Sign’s version is a grilled corn tortilla topped with homemade black beans, two eggs, homemade ranchero sauce, melted jack cheese, olives, avocado and sour cream. It is served with shredded lettuce, diced tomatoes, and a warm flour tortilla.

We were happy we followed the recommendations.

Then I took a solo tour of Tahoe City.

I went into Kiwi Kanmera Gallery and spoke with the owner and artist, Garry “Kiwi” Moore. He shoots his all-seasons photography with a Nikon digital. His work includes multi-image panoramas in Giclee on canvas, and sublimation print process on metal.

Then I took a look in the North Tahoe Arts Center. It is an artists collective that started 25 years ago. Right now, 25 artists rent spaces to display and sell their work. There’s room for five more artists.

Artist Nancy Olson was doing her monthly shift on the sales floor. Olson uses Czech glass beads to make pins, earrings, necklaces, and bracelets. She uses Czech materials because that’s where her family is from.

I walked past Tahoe City Kayak Paddleboard that is located across from Commons Beach. It offers guided tours, plus kayak and paddleboard rentals and sales.

They have a moonlight paddle tour and a sunset kayak tour that look like a ton of fun.

I went into Alpine Home that has upscale furniture, accessories, rugs, lighting, and interior design services. A plush chair caught my eye. It was a hair-on-hide custom design with suede lacing, hammered brass detail in the arms, and a palm wood frame. The chair was displayed with a one-of-a-kind hair-on-hide custom desk by Kolkka.

Then I hurried back to The Inn at Boatworks to get a shower before heading to dinner.

We pivoted and changed our plans because the mischievous bear was still sleeping under the inn.

The staff rolled with the punches in true Tahoe spirit.

This pocket of paradise has firmly secured a place on our list of future adventures with or without a mischievous bear.
