Spetses Classic Regatta

The greek must-not-miss event for classic sailing yachts.

With its glorious naval tradition, Spetses Island could not be missed in the worldwide locations of regatta for Classic Sailing Yachts. Spetses has always kept an important role in the Greek History, especially during the War of Independence. And today it is the favorite location for many Greek shipowners reunions, in the Summer. The Island is also known for having given home to some of the most important shipwrights, building the traditional Aegean Classic Schooners , locally known as caiques - which have nothing to do with the Turkish Caiques-Gulets, anyway. It is to honor this tradition that during the Spetses Classic Regatta , Aegean Schooners and small lateens will be racing alongside with classic yachts, although in a class of their own. This unique combination of three ways to enjoy the classic yachting , with their common heritage and common classical aesthetics, combined with world-class organization, creates every year a memorable event.

At shore, a number of events take place every evening, in the many charming locations of the island: the Poseidonion Hotel , the Kaiki Beach , the Orloff Restaurant, Paliolimani - the old harbor, they all become part of the stage of this unique event, which combines the warmest colors of Greece with the elegance of the classic yachts. Definitely the Spetses Classic Regatta is more and more becoming the event you do not want to miss in Greece , if you like classic yachts.

Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta

International Spetses Classic Yacht Racing Week ran for the first time in 2011 from the 30 September to the 2nd October and was organised by The Yacht Club of Greece.

This is a regatta for classic yachts that sail backwards and forwards across the Peloponnese Channel - otherwise known as the Kosta strait. Many boats arrive from all over Greece and Aegean Classic Schooners (known as Caiques) race alongside the classic yachts. There are some island participants too, recognisable by their Spetses flag, with the red insignia 'Eleftheria i Thanatos' (Freedom or Death) with a cross, anchor, snake, spear and bird.

October 2011's event was a precursor - a little taster of what was to be in store for the coming years! It was organised in honour of the Spetsiot seafarers, who fought in the 1821 Greek Revolution.

It has been a magnificent event over the past 4 years and has therefore now been put on the annual Spetses calendar for the month of June.

Both 2012 and 2013 were a great  success with the fair weather in June. The number of  participants has increased  each year with some of the most beautiful classic Greek boats and Aegean Classic Schooners taking part. The Sea Scouts also, on their wonderful Lateens, with their triangular sails set on long yards mounted to their masts.

June 2014 and June 2015 were both a resounding success with a record number of vessels taking part and there are now four categories:

Classic Boats (with three sub-categories Vintage ( – 1947) Classic (1948 – 1974) Spirit of Tradition (1976 – ); Traditional Caiques ; Lateens and the Dragons  (2014 being the first year for this category).

Competing In Style in the Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta

As the 7th annual race gets underway, we take a look at this institution that, despite all odds, blossomed during the years of the crisis..

Vassiliki Kerasta | June 15th, 2018

The first time that I “competed” in a sailing race was in 2011 with the Candita one of the prettiest classic boats – a 1929 J Class – to take part in the now-firmly-established Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta . To be more precise, the crew of 13 were competing while I sat quietly, enjoying the banter and teasing between them, the bronze details, the sounds of the elegant wooden hull cutting through the waves, and, of course, the play of the sails in the wind. And particularly the spray of the sea as the boat heeled in strong gusts.

In that first race 12 graceful classic boats and 11 traditional caiques took part. Going against the turbulent winds of the economic crisis, the Greek skippers dared to issue an invitation to the world of classic yacht sailing, even though they knew that the undertaking would be a demanding one. Large yachts are concentrated in the western Mediterranean in places such as Monaco. Traveling to Greece for them would be difficult, time consuming and costly. The call was aimed at people who truly love the sea and would not be fazed by the difficulties. People Such as Ion Argyriadis, a resident of France, who has taken part in some years with the Sagittarius , a vessel with two trans-Atlantic voyages under its belt. The race has also been boosted by the participation of Greek Olympic champions, such as gold-medallist Sofia Bekatorou.

Times are still tough, but the regatta’s organizers remain optimistic and the race has grown year-on-year drawing ever greater interest. This year, 85 vessels will take part, including boats from France, England, Turkey. Among them will also be the  Antara belonging to Australian Ian Kortlang which will be competing for the second year. Last year the Antara travelled around 10,000 nautical miles on a ship from Sydney to Genoa and from there another 1,160 – this time under its own sails – to reach Spetses.

“I have taken part in many regattas all over the world and this one in Spetses is on par with the others and charming on many levels,” Ian says who, on returning to Australia, left the Antara in a Greek dry-dock in order to race again this year.

The vision is always the same: to bolster the international character of the regatta and boost the number of participants from abroad, be it as it may that our country is a hard-to-reach destination. “They have to say, ‘we will have our holidays in Greece’ in order to come,” Lisa Stathatou says, a member of the organizing committee and of the Yacht Club of Greece .

spetses classic yacht regatta

Last year the regatta comprised three categories : races for classic yachts, for schooners and traditional work boats, and for traditional open boats. This year a fourth category has been added: that of family open boats and dinghies.

The traditional open boat category includes “latini” type vessels – latin-rigged small wooden sailing boats – sailed by sea scouts in what is likely a world first for this sort of race, demonstrating the deep affection the organizers have for Greece’s seafaring tradition.

“The latini is the little boat that a Greek grandfather would take out in Aignoussa , for example, to catch an octopus in order to feed a child. That child went on to become a sailor, he became a bosun, later a captain, he became a shipowner and obtained a gentleman’s boat. There is a story behind the philosophy of the regatta,” explains Manolis Vordonis , president of the company Protovoulia Spetson and of the Poseidonio Hotel.

The base of operations is invariably the Poseidonio, one of Greece’s most historic hotels, which first opened its doors in 1914. The regatta is supported by important sponsors, such as Grey Goose and Moët & Chandon which are this year’s gold sponsors, the company IWC and others. Other events are held before and after the races including the traditional cocktail party for participants before the start of the regatta. On many levels the entire event has an aristocratic air, but first and foremost it is a great celebration of Greek and international seafaring, of teamwork and the spirit of fair play.

spetses classic yacht regatta

“It is important in a period of crisis to organize such events that put the spotlight on Greece with a positive message and which, over time, can bolster the Greek economy,” says  Alexandros Papadogonas the president of the Yacht Club of Greece , the body that organizes the races.

The Spetses Classic Regatta has two important secondary goals: to support the shipbuilders of Spetses, and to get kids involved with sailing. To these ends the Spetses Yacht Club was founded five years ago. This even has special classes such that young people living on the island can get to know kids whose families vacation on Spetses. The hope is that over time lasting bonds of friendship will be forged all around the sport of sailing.

“As a yacht club we want to get the kids out on the sea, to get them up from the computers, to get them thinking strategically. When they get on a boat, all together, they start thinking as a team!” their instructors say.

It is this teamwork and single-minded focus on a goal that I have truly come to admire watching the international Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta over the years. And I look forward to being impressed by it all over again during the 2018 races.

This is my first time, is this ok?

Beginners without experience can participate in the regatta, since on the yacht there is always a professional skipper with extensive experience who will teach you everything you need for your role on the boat. In addition, as a rule, there are experienced yachtsmen in the crew who will help you get settled and feel comfortable.

What is included and not included in the price?

As a rule, the cost of participation in the regatta includes:.

— accommodation on a yacht for the duration of the regatta;

— bed linen and towels;

— organizational fee;

— skipper services;

— the cost of mooring in marinas;

— basic sailing training;

— a yacht polo or t-shirts from the organizers.

Additional expenses you will need to pay:

— airplane tickets and transfer to the marina;

— a visa. However, we will give you an invitation and confirmation of accommodation booking for the embassy. Visas for sporting events are easy to get;

— personal expenses.

No comments, be the first one!

Can i participate in a regatta if i don’t have yachting experience.

Yes, of course. There will be an experienced skipper and team members on the yacht. They will give you a role and teach you everything you need to know to be a useful team member and feel comfortable.

Will I be able to steer a yacht?

Yes, all team members will definitely try themselves in different roles to better understand each other. Standing at the helm is an integral part of training for beginners as well as setting sails, and helping the team during moorings.

Where will I live during the regatta?

As a rule, participants in the regatta live on the yacht. The boat has everything you need for a comfortable stay: nice beds, a kitchen, a shower with toilet. If you do not want to live on a yacht, then you can arrange to stay at the hotel onshore.

What will we eat?

The crew decides altogether what kind of food they prefer to eat and makes necessary purchases. Simple dishes can be cooked, usually taking turns. Some regattas offer daily meals and intensive evening program for all crews.

Do you help with a visa?

We can make an invitation for a visa, but you need to apply for a visa by yourself.

Will I have seasick? What should I do if I have sickness?

Most people tolerate some seasickness easily. If you feel that you are starting to feel sick, it is best to get at the steering wheel or tune the sails. Get yourself busy, show your body that you don’t have time to get sick, you have to fight for victory in the race. There are also many quite effective medicines from sickness. If you start taking them in advance, then the probability of seasickness is almost zero.

How and where will I meet the crew and the captain?

Before each trip, we organize an online meeting where participants get to know each other and the captain. The captain will answer all your questions. The crew will have a group chat so you can get to know each other before the start of the regatta. Then you will meet in the marina.

What clothes do I need?

The main rule is to dress comfortably and according to the weather. Clothing: • windbreaker and pants or shorts; • shirt/jacket with UV protection (thermal underwear and fleece); • adjustable hat/cap; • gloves. We recommend to purchase a long-sleeved jacket with UV protection in order to protect yourself from the sun and strong wind. Yachting shoes should be: • light, with non-slip white outsole; • with the fixed heel; • with a tightly closed nose. During the sailing without shoes, you can fall or injure your fingers and feet on the deck. There are many protruding parts on the boat that are easy to catch. Unfortunately, even experienced sailors are not protected from unpleasant injuries when they ignore this simple rule.

W here better to stage the spectacular Classic Yacht Regatta than on the cosmopolitan island of Spetses ? Perfectly positioned in the Argosaronic Gulf, the island is home to an extravagant show of fine yachts and vintage craft, which compete in special categories before an avid crowd of sailing aficionados.

Now in its 9th year, the four-day event is the darling of classic yacht sailing fans, with many international competitors travelling from far afield just to take part. Organised by the Nautical Club of Greece under the Aegis of the Municipality of Spetses, there is something really special about the event and it is no surprise that its popularity continues to grow.

Imagine a flock of white canvas fluttering in the breeze against the bright blue Mediterranean sky while the rippling waves carry vintage hulls down the straits to victory in a race containing showmanship, excitement and sheer beauty. The Spetses Classic Yacht Regatta is a wonder to behold, offering the spectator the opportunity to see a wide range of exquisite craft doing what they do best — sail! For the skippers and their crew, it is the chance to pit their skills against some of the best competitors in the world while enjoying the thrill of the race in a fantastic location. This is a serious event for many, with top Olympic athletes and sailing professionals regularly taking part. The categories are divided into Classic Yachts, Aegean Schooners & Traditional Work Boats, Traditional Open Boats, Family Open Boats (Dinghies) and Contemporary Classic Yachts, with the winners in each receiving their awards at the emblematic Poseidonion Grand Hotel, an elegant reminder of the island’s glamorous past.

While vintage vessels of brightly polished wood and towering masts sit in the little harbour next to ultra-slick modern craft decked out in the latest in performance hi-tech, one is reminded of the island’s boatbuilding tradition and its inherent connection with the sea. A commercial power in the Greece of the 19th century, Spetses continues to build and repair traditional ‘kaikis’, which also take part in the Regatta. Sailing conditions in the region are just perfect for this type of event, with mild winds and well protected seas graced by the warm Greek sunshine spreading across the straits. It’s really a sight to be seen and whether taking part as a contestant or attending the Regatta as a spectator, there is a buzz that you just won’t find anywhere else.

Cocktail parties and champagne receptions undoubtedly bring that extra pizzazz to the whole affair, with participants dressing up in their finest to celebrate in true aristocratic style. It is though, first and foremost, a celebration of the Greek seafaring tradition, international cooperation and the spirit of fair play.
