The Alden Star is the open water racer from the experts in open water rowing. The advanced hydrodynamic hull design incorporates a unique, reverse transom and step stern, to reduce drag and increase lift. Central positioning of the rower, and even distribution of fore and aft hull volume, provides equal buoyancy at the catch and finish of the stroke to reduce pitch and drag. The flat bottom provides stability while the slightly flared bow provides lift over waves, helping to maintain a powerful, even stroke. The Star positions you for maximum performance. Oarlocks are placed forward of the uniquely designed canted rigger, allowing rowing through the pin at the catch for a longer stroke. Rigging is mounted with internal and external plates to insure strength, but can be removed in less than a minute. Oarlocks can be adjusted for pitch, spread range (60"-65"), and extra long oarlock pins provide the vertical adjustment for varying water conditions. Individual teak clogs can be adjusted for splay angle, stance width, and heel cup height. The Star has won numerous open water and recreational class races, and is equally at home in the four-foot swells of the Santa Cruz to Monterey race, or the flatter conditions of the Charles River in Boston. Boat Specs:The fiberglass Alden Star weighs approximately 45 pounds when rigged, has a functional weight capacity of 275 lbs, a hull length of 21 feet 8 inches, a waterline beam of 18.4 inches and an overall beam of 21.5 inches. Hull Construction: Vacuum bagged laminate of stitched fiberglass and vinylester resin, 10-12 mil. gel coat finish, full length stringer creates I-beam construction, floatation. Special Features: Enclosed skeg box, two access ports, on deck storage, removable bow line.

Alden Yachts For Sale

The Alden Yachts design firm was founded in 1909 by naval architect, John C. Alden, in Boston, Massachusetts at an exciting time when America was developing the transportation industry and infrastructure for trains, planes, automobiles, and more. The Industrial Age brought new wealth and leisure time for recreation and travel.

Learn More About Alden And Find Your Next Boat

Yacht Clubs in coastal towns held regattas, racing associations held offshore races, and racing yachts were developed, with winning yacht designers receiving yacht commissions and established business success. Fame and success came to Alden’s design firm after his Bermuda Race victories with his Malabar series of sailing yachts in 1923, 1926, and 1932, and continued long after his retirement to Florida in 1955. John Alden continued his love of sailing into his 70s on his Alden Sakomet One sailboat.

Designer Niels Helleberg, who emigrated to Boston from his native Finland in 1971, spent virtually his entire distinguished career that spanned four decades, as Chief Architect with John G. Alden Naval Architects Inc. When the Design firm was closed in 2008 after nearly 100 years in business, Niels Helleberg continued to work with the parent holding company that had bequeathed the Alden Design Collection to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Museum’s “Hart Nautical Collection,” directing the project.

Niels Helleberg who was committed to the preservation of John G Alden’s designs and legacy, was also instrumental in creating the “last schooner” John Alden drew in 1927, but never built, in the authentic style and philosophy of extreme simplicity as notated by the late designer. The “Wolfhound” project to build the 1927 design that began in 2012, was also a final schooner for Niels Helleberg who passed away in 2014. His superb design work and contributions to naval architecture, including many innovations and patents, are also preserved in the Alden archive at MIT.

Another notable designer with John G Alden Naval Architects Inc, was designer Bill Cook, responsible for the Alden 55 Center Cockpit in 2008, the final Alden Yacht. He is also credited with the Alden 72, Alden 54, Alden 52, Alden 50, Alden 46, Alden 45, and Alden 44 that are more modern cruising sailboats. Alden Yachts was initially known for the fast, seaworthy offshore schooners that brought attention to the firm, and then expanded to a wide range of exceptional sailing yachts, with a sprinkling of motor yachts in the portfolio. Most of the Alden powerboats were built during the 1950s decade. The Classic Alden Yachts available on the preowned yacht market are sought after for their seaworthy performance, and seakindly, bluewater capabilities.

Currently there are 24 preowned Alden sailing yachts and boats available on the USA yacht MLS, ranging in year from vintage 1912 to 1994. From vintage years 1907 to 1949, a 1912 25ft Alden Corinthian One-Design is listed at about $29,000 ranging in price to a 1938 62ft Alden Motor Sailer at about $2.6 million. From Classic years 1950 to 1979, a 1974 Alden Dolphin 47 is listed at about $76,000 ranging in price to a 1969 4ft Alden Caravelle Yawl at about $249,000. From 1980 to 2008, a 1980 19ft Alden Biddeford Pool One Design is listed at about $10,000 ranging in price to a 1984 Alden Palmer Johnson 78 at about $695,000.

John G. Alden

John G. Alden opened his design officed in 1909. By 1932, he was known worldwide in part due to his “Malabar” design’s success on the offshore racing scene between 1923 and 1932. John Alden is best known for his fast and seaworthy offshore boats but he designed a broad range of exceptional boats and most of his designs have become true classics. Others who had their start with the firm include Fenwick Williams, Clifford Swain, Sam Crocker, Carl Alberg, Murray Peterson and K. Aage Nielsen. Tillotson Corp, the parent corporation of John G. Alden Inc. of MA, specified that the John G. Alden collection of designs be donated to MIT’s Hart Nautical Collection.

Alien 21 - Should I call BS on the seller?

All: I saw an ad on the Portland. OR Craigs List for an Alien 21. Looks like an interesting boat, particularly if someone were to jettison the cat rig and drop in something a little racier. One of the things in the ad that really caught my eye was the statement "I've sailed her at 25 knots sustained for hours and hours". I emailed the owner and gave him an out, asking him if he meant "in 25, not at 25", but he insists the numbers are correct. I mean, it looks fast, but 29MPH sustained is way faaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaast. Is there any way short of falling off a cliff on the trailer that this boat runs 25kts.? Sustained? The ad: http://portland.craigslist.org/mlt/boa/293376631.html

already been a lot of talk about this one in an earlier thread, particularly about the claimed fleets in Sydney which don't exist. Yes claimed speed is BS, not unless that the boat is a wild turbo job with a Carbon hull, carrying a VO70 rig with a canting keel (or something to that effect)

Same designer as the JS9000. Funny little cat-rigged boat - Lee Killingworth had one for a while. Yeah, you can't move on Sydney Harbour for the huge fleets of Aliens hurtling downwind at 25+

Nice little boat, but we used to have good racing against them (and by "them" I mean one boat at a time - there's no fleet of Aliens anywhere) in Crossfire 20s - and the Crossfire is a copy of the Santana 20. One Alien was modified and sailed by a guy who finishes in the top 25% of Laser titles on board, but 25 knots is still out by a factor about 3! The seller's claims are about as credible as some of the links on his page. Been smokin' waaaaay too much of the good stuff!

Heaven can wait

Heaven can wait

My favourite boats of that era and around that size would have to be the Blazer 23, Crossfire 20 and a Sloop rigged Alien 21. A friend bought a modified (Re-rigged) Alien 21, with the vision to join one of the Sailing Clubs locally, and silly me I thought at the time offered to come out with him and get the boat sorted for a few races, almost a Season later I was still having a ball sailing the boat. With headsails and Mast head Spinnaker (16 foot Skiff Symmetric which I still have) the Alien was great fun to sail, especially in a breeze. We saw late 14's, early 15's in winds around 30knots, but at those speeds the boat is pretty much at it's limit. Our friend claiming 25's is having a bit of a go with himself, as my Young 780 Sportsboat which is a fair bit quicker has only seen mid 22's tops. 14's to 15's on a Modified Alien is nothing to be sneezed at just quietly, the ride was awesome. The boat was called "Area 51" if anyone still knows of it's whereabouts?

cueball said: Nope, not even 8 knots of current, more like 18 knots for sustained 25's. Click to expand...

But its not in a book or on TV. If its on TV or in a book it must be true. Books and TV's never lie but the internet, you better watch it.

Family still missing after sailboat found

U.S. Coast Guard and partner agencies have recovered the bodies of two children and are searching for an adult from an overdue 18-foot sailing vessel that originally departed from Green Island in Green Bay, Wisconsin, at approximately 4 p.m. on Saturday, July 13, 2024. U.S. Coast Guard

UPDATE: Bodies of 2 children recovered from Lake Michigan identified as those missing from capsized sailboat

The bodies of two children were found in Lake Michigan on Monday, hours after their family’s capsized sailboat was recovered, officials said.

The search continues for their father, the final person who was aboard the vessel, according to the Oconto County Sheriff’s Office .

The children’s names are being withheld pending identification and notification of their family, police said.

Those aboard the boat – Bill Salnik, 32, of Little Suamico, Wis., and his children, ages 3 and 5 – were last heard from around 4 p.m. Saturday when they departed from Green Island in Lake Michigan’s Green Bay. They were expected to return to a marina near Oconto, Wis., but never arrived. Officials were notified that they were missing Sunday afternoon.

Salnik’s truck and trailer were found at the boat launch. His phone was going straight to voicemail.

At 6:22 a.m. Monday, the capsized 18-foot Gulf Coast Sailboat was found just south of Chambers Island. It was towed to shore. No one was found near the vessel and the search continued.

Monday afternoon, the bodies of the two children were found three nautical miles from the recovery site of the capsized vessel.

Search efforts continue on the water and from the air for Salnik.

9 shot, 3 dead at large party in West Philadelphia

Detectives are now looking for suspects and a motive in the shooting.

WPVI logo

PHILADELPHIA (WPVI) -- Police are investigating a mass shooting that took place in West Philadelphia.

Nine people were shot, and three of them died.

This happened just after 2 a.m. Sunday in the 1200 block of North Alden Street.

According to authorities, this all stemmed from a fight.

Police believe more than 100 people were gathered when shots rang out.

Action News is told all the victims were adults in their 20s and 30s.

Detectives are now looking for the suspects involved.

"It appears that there were multiple shooters, but it's unclear at this time how many. We have counted at least 25 to 30 spent shell casings at this time," says Inspector D.F. Pace.

"We're not sure if it was a block party or just simply a group of individuals that were invited from other parts of the city. It's not clear at this time."

Police say injuries of the surviving victims range from stable to critical.

They did find a gun at the scene, but no suspects are in custody.

Man charged after car drives off Galveston's Pier 21, 3 presumed missing found safe, police say

Rosie Nguyen Image

GALVESTON, Texas (KTRK) -- A 21-year-old has been charged after a car was driven off Pier 21 in Galveston, which spurred a search for three possibly missing passengers who were found safe, according to police.

Galveston police received a call about a vehicle that drove through the chain and into the water at 21st Street and Harborside Drive around 1 a.m.

Investigators arrived and learned at least one man, identified as 21-year-old driver Caleb Joseph Hayes, managed to escape from the submerged vehicle.

Hayes was taken to UTMB Health Galveston, where he was questioned and treated.

Port of Galveston Police and the U.S. Coast Guard started a search after Hayes told police three others were inside the sunken car, using helicopters, boats, and dive teams.

As of 6:15 a.m., police told ABC13 that they had located the vehicle, but it was still underwater. According to Galveston PD, the vehicle was pulled from the water at 8:30 a.m., but no occupants were found.

According to a press release, it was later discovered that the three other presumed missing passengers had been found safe by officials and appeared not to have been inside the vehicle then.

Police said the driver was released from the hospital and subsequently charged with DWI.

An investigation is ongoing.

Couple found dead on Atlantic’s ‘Graveyard Island’ while sailing across ocean

Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood were found dead on a remote island in the Atlantic Ocean (Picture: Facebook)

A couple who were trying to sail across the Atlantic Ocean have been found dead washed up in a lifeboat on a remote island.

British musician Sarah Packwood, 54, and her husband Brett Clibbery, 70, were attempting to make their way from Nova Scotia, Canada , to the Azores.

They set sail on June 11 on their 42ft wind and solar-powered yacht named Theros but were reported missing a week later after contact had been lost with the boat.

Their bodies were discovered in a three-metre life raft on Sable Island – a stretch of land dubbed the ‘graveyard of the Atlantic’ around 180 miles east of Nova Scotia – last week.

It’s not yet known how the couple got into trouble on their 2,000-mile voyage from North America to the Portuguese islands, which lie around 870 miles west of mainland Europe.

Brett, a Canadian, was carrying a Garmin GPS device which reportedly pinged a final signal on June 13 around 40 miles south-west of Sable Island.

Police in Halifax have launched an investigation into their deaths.

The couple were attempting to sail from Canada to Portuguese islands the Azores (Picture: Facebook)

Sable Island, which is a long and thin area of land stretching around 28 miles, gained its nickname as the Atlantic’s graveyard for the sheer number of people found dead there through history.

More than 350 shipwrecks have been recorded since 1583, according to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic, which says the island is near a major shipping route, lies on a common storm path and is surrounded by ‘tricky’ currents.

It’s home to hundreds of wild horses, manned by just a handful of federal government staff with no permanent residents, and is a protected National Park Reserve.

The pair first met at a bus stop in London in 2015 and got married on their yacht one year later before also holding a Celtic marriage ceremony at Stonehenge.

Sarah, who was from Warwickshire and said to be an ‘accomplished sailor’, later moved to Canada with Brett and they lived on land they bought on Salt Spring Island, near Vancouver.

The pair married in 2015 (Picture: Facebook)

As they embarked on their journey, the couple shared a video on their Facebook page, Theros Sailing Adventure, and wrote: ‘Captain Brett and First Mate Sarah set sail on the 2nd leg of The Green Odyssey on board Theros – GibSea 42 foot sailboat.

‘Powered by the wind and sun. Heading east to the Azores.’

Brett’s son James Clibbery paid a heartbreaking tribute to his father on July 13.

‘The past few days have been very hard,’ he wrote on Facebook.

Timeline of Brett Clibbery and Sarah Packwood’s disappearance

  • June 11: The couple set sail from Halifax, Nova Scotia in Canada on their 42ft wind and solar-powered yacht named Theros.
  • June 13: Brett’s Garmin GPS device pings a final signal around 40 miles south-west of Sable Island.
  • June 18: They are reported missing after contact with the boat was lost and a Coastguard search begins.
  • July 10: Their bodies are found washed up on a three-metre life raft on Sable Island, 180 miles off the coast of Nova Scotia.
  • July 13: Brett’s son James pays tribute to his father and confirms both Brett and Sarah have died.

‘My father James Brett Clibbery, and his wife, Sarah Justine Packwood have regrettably passed away.

‘There is still an investigation, as well as a DNA test to confirm, but with all the news, it is hard to remain hopeful.

‘I am so very sorry to the people who were friends of them. They were amazing people, and there isn’t anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far unexplained passing.

‘Living will not be the same without your wisdom, and your wife was quickly becoming a beacon of knowledge, and kindness. I miss your smiles. I miss your voices. You will be forever missed.’

John Dolman, a friend of the couple, told local news outlet Times Colonist that they died doing ‘the thing they loved’.

He said: ‘She called him “captain” and called herself the “carpenter’s apprentice”. They were in love. They passed away doing the thing that they loved. Their adventure continues on the other side.’

Experts have offered theories about how a thrill-seeking Canadian couple’s attempted transatlantic sailing expedition turned tragic last month, positing their homemade vessel may have been struck by a much larger ship soon after they departed Halifax on the country’s North East coast.

Earlier this month, the bodies of Brett Clibbery, 70, and Sarah Justine Packwood, 54, were found on a life raft washed up on Sable Island, Nova Scotia.

The area is ominously nicknamed the “Graveyard of the Atlantic” due to the large number of shipwrecks that wind up on its shores.

An official investigation is underway, and although no concrete answers have yet come to light, one leading theory is that their boat was badly damaged by a much larger vessel, forcing the couple to seek refuge in the life raft.

“While they do not have conclusive proof, [investigators] suspect the sailboat … was struck by a bulk carrier likely only a few days after departing Halifax,” a source close to the investigation revealed to Saltwire .

Investigators have reportedly inspected a carrier ship that was in the same area as the couple’s boat — named Theros — at the outset of its voyage, but the results of the probe have not been released to the public.

“The crew of the carrier ship told investigators there were no signs of damage and they were unaware of any collision with a smaller vessel,” the Daily Mirror writes.

The source surmised that the ship’s homemade additions might have presented additional problems, and veteran sailors told the outlet the excessive ballast from batteries and solar panels could have destabilized the boat.

The pair set sail June 11 on a journey that was supposed to take them across the Atlantic Ocean from Halifax to the Azores in their 42-foot yacht, which the couple built themselves.

The eco-friendly boat, which operated without a diesel engine, was due to arrive at its destination by July 2, to serve as a demonstration of how it’s possible to travel the world with electric, wind and solar-powered vessels.

The excursion was to be the couple’s first fully “green” journey on Theros, the building of which the couple chronicled on their YouTube channel, “Theros Adventures.”

Despite the swirling theories about how the doomed voyage turned deadly, the Canadian transportation safety board has not made any formal announcements indicating what happened

“At this time, we cannot say with complete certainty that the sailing vessel was struck by a ship, as we are still gathering information regarding the overdue sailing vessel Theros,” a spokesman said.

Sarah Justine Packwood smiles and looks back towards the camera on a boat.

Clibbery and Packwood married on the yacht in 2016, one year after they met during a chance encounter at a bus stop in London, England.

Packwood was preparing to donate a kidney to her sister when she met Clibbery, who was visiting from Canada — a heartwarming story that was the center of a  2020 “How We Met” piece in The Guardian.

“We have been traveling and co-creating adventures ever since,” Packwood previously posted on YouTube.

Clibbery’s son, Brett, posted a loving tribute to the couple on Facebook, acknowledging the last few days had been really hard for the family, and news to emerge from the investigation has left it “hard to remain hopeful.”

He continued, “They were amazing people, and there isn’t anything that will fill the hole that has been left by their, so far, unexplained passing.

“Living will not be the same without your wisdom, and your wife was quickly becoming a beacon of knowledge, and kindness. I miss your smiles. I miss your voices. You will be forever missed.”

3 people dead, 6 injured after mass shooting erupted at a party in West Philly

More than 100 people were attending the party on the 1200 block of North Alden Street in the city's Carroll Park section when shots broke out, police said.

Philadelphia Crime Scene Unit officers and detectives investigate a multiple fatal shooting at North Alden Street above Girard Avenue in West Philadelphia early Sunday morning.

At least three people are dead and six more are injured after a mass shooting broke out at a party in West Philadelphia early Sunday morning.

More than 100 people were attending a cookout on the 1200 block of North Alden Street in the Carroll Park neighborhood when officers responded to reports of a person with a gun just after 2 a.m. Upon arriving, police said, officers found multiple people suffering from gunshot wounds.

A 33-year-old man — who Chief Inspector D.F. Pace told reporters was “shot at very close range” and likely targeted — was pronounced dead at the scene. A 23-year-old man with multiple gunshot wounds died shortly after being taken to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The third victim was 29 years old, said police, and was also pronounced dead at Penn Presbyterian after being shot in the abdomen.

Names of the victims have not been released.

Police said two 28-year-old men are in stable condition at Penn Presbyterian, one with a gunshot wound to the thigh, the other to a foot. Another 28-year-old man is in stable condition at Lankenau Hospital with several gunshot wounds.

A 30-year-old man shot in the thighs is also in stable condition at Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania , said police. Another man, 27, is being treated for a graze wound to the head and a gunshot to the leg at Penn Presbyterian.

One woman, 26, was also shot and is being treated at Penn Presbyterian, said police.

Pace told reporters that officers believe there were multiple shooters involved. “We counted at least 25 to 30 spent shell casings.”

Officers are looking to review surveillance footage of the incident. Police confirmed a weapon was recovered at the scene of the cookout, but no arrests have been made and no suspects are in custody. Mayor Cherelle L. Parker ’s administration has also been briefed, police said.

Anyone with information regarding the shooting, which occurred about two blocks from the park that shares the neighborhood’s name, should contact the police at 215-686-8477.

Far from the norm in Carroll Park

Police familiar with the area told The Inquirer that violence is less common in Carroll Park, a stretch of West Philadelphia that shares its name with a public park between 58th and 59th Streets on Girard Avenue. Compared to other sections of the city, the neighborhood is not known as a shooting hot spot, they said.

Carroll Park has recorded 24 shooting victims since the start of 2024, according to a dashboard kept by the Office of the City Controller.

One of those happened just three blocks from where Sunday’s shooting occurred. In June, a 17-year-old was shot multiple times on the 1500 block of North Alden Street.

“It’s normally quiet,” said Tyrese Marshall, who was sweeping up litter outside the Masjid Ibn Taymiyya community center down the street from the shooting Sunday afternoon. “Just kids out playing, and people sitting out on the stairs. There’s never anything going on like that.”

The area is also home to a robust civic association. The Friends of Carroll Park steward the green space and playground around the corner from the shooting site, regularly hosting community events and park cleanups. Central to their message: reporting criminal activity.

“We need all the help and all the eyes we can get! It’s our park to protect!” reads a message posted to their Facebook page a day before the shooting.

Parties spark major shootings

This is the third multiple shooting at a large outdoor gathering this year in Philadelphia.

The most recent one before Sunday’s happened on July 4 in Kingsessing , when a gunman opened fire at a “pop-up” party , killing 19-year-old Maurice Quann . Police said his party might have gotten caught in the middle of a longstanding gang feud. Eight other people were also shot — all between the ages of 14 and 24 — and an arrest has yet to be made.

Just under three weeks before that, 17-year-old Isya Stanley was shot and killed in Fairmount Park when gunfire rang out at a party she was attending with her boyfriend and about 100 other juveniles. Four other teens were also injured.

There have been 142 homicides to date in 2024, according to data kept by the Philadelphia Police Department , down 39% from this time last year. Before Sunday morning’s shooting, there were 600 gun violence victims in 2024. Of those, 129 died.

Sunday’s mass shooting comes less than week before a preplanned rally against gun violence. Helmed by organizers with the Crime Survivors for Safety and Justice Network, gun violence survivors and reform advocates will gather at Kingsessing’s Salt & Light Church — just under three miles from Sunday’s deadly block party — to advocate for the creation of a trauma recovery center in Philly.
