With the opening of the new MIT Museum at Kendall, the museum is once again able to provide digital copies of Alden plans. However, plan orders will take several months to fill due to the volume of pent-up demand. Requests sent after the museum opening (October 1, 2022) will be answered in the order received.

To speed up the process, please include the following information in your request: the Alden design number; how you will use the plans (i.e., restoring an existing vessel, building a new vessel, publication, research); and whether you would like a complete plan set or are looking for a specific detail. Digital copies of plans cost $15 apiece. Early Alden designs usually have 6 – 10 plans each; later designs can have between 15 and 30.

The Alden plans for a Swampscott Dory, later known as an Indian, as based on the formal Massachusetts Bay Indian Class formed in 1926 and first raced in 1927, are at MIT Museum, the custodian for them after Alden’s firm closed: http://www.aldendesigns.com/ AND they are available through Wooden Boat: https://www.woodenboatstore.com/coll…aysailer-plans The Wooden Boat source might be more reliable due to COVID-19, nevermind that the MIT Museum was in the process of moving into a new building.

I have also read that it was Crocker that actuallly drew the plan(s) but I don’t have them yet so I cannot confirm that.

There are several versions. Alden Indian design #148 which a centerboard (CB) lapstrake design using a depth-tapering skeg that leads gradually into a vertical-shaft rudder. Another variation was #293 using a full keel, 9″ longer and 3’10” draft (up from 1’6″). A third version was #398 for the Nantucket Indians — I have read that these were carvel-planked but were otherwise dimensionally the same and also used a CB. So the “yard number” listed isn’t correct, but these design numbers are.

Gaff-rigging on “new” Indian builds were probably extinct by 1927. I know my grandfather (and dad) built spars for Indians but I don’t recall them ever working on a gaff design. It was always Marconi. I believe some of the original drawings did have a gaff rig. HTH.

Indian is a 21 ′ 1 ″ / 6.5 m monohull sailboat designed by John G. Alden and Samuel Crocker and built by Howard Boats and Chaisson Boat Builders starting in 1921.

Drawing of Indian

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Alden design #148. A one-design class first sailed at Eastern YC, Marblehead, MA and then adopted by other nearby clubs. Sam Crocker worked for the John Alden firm at this time. Spinnaker: 250 sq.ft. At least one fiberglass version was built. (Nereia Yachts, NC, USA)

(There was an earlier one design class called the INDIAN, (1913), from the design firm of William Gardner, and built by Thorpe Brothers of Nyack, NY., for members of Shattemuc Y.C., Ossening, NY. It is thought that no more than a dozen were built.)

Alden Yachts For Sale

The Alden Yachts design firm was founded in 1909 by naval architect, John C. Alden, in Boston, Massachusetts at an exciting time when America was developing the transportation industry and infrastructure for trains, planes, automobiles, and more. The Industrial Age brought new wealth and leisure time for recreation and travel.

Learn More About Alden And Find Your Next Boat

Yacht Clubs in coastal towns held regattas, racing associations held offshore races, and racing yachts were developed, with winning yacht designers receiving yacht commissions and established business success. Fame and success came to Alden’s design firm after his Bermuda Race victories with his Malabar series of sailing yachts in 1923, 1926, and 1932, and continued long after his retirement to Florida in 1955. John Alden continued his love of sailing into his 70s on his Alden Sakomet One sailboat.

Designer Niels Helleberg, who emigrated to Boston from his native Finland in 1971, spent virtually his entire distinguished career that spanned four decades, as Chief Architect with John G. Alden Naval Architects Inc. When the Design firm was closed in 2008 after nearly 100 years in business, Niels Helleberg continued to work with the parent holding company that had bequeathed the Alden Design Collection to Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Museum’s “Hart Nautical Collection,” directing the project.

Niels Helleberg who was committed to the preservation of John G Alden’s designs and legacy, was also instrumental in creating the “last schooner” John Alden drew in 1927, but never built, in the authentic style and philosophy of extreme simplicity as notated by the late designer. The “Wolfhound” project to build the 1927 design that began in 2012, was also a final schooner for Niels Helleberg who passed away in 2014. His superb design work and contributions to naval architecture, including many innovations and patents, are also preserved in the Alden archive at MIT.

Another notable designer with John G Alden Naval Architects Inc, was designer Bill Cook, responsible for the Alden 55 Center Cockpit in 2008, the final Alden Yacht. He is also credited with the Alden 72, Alden 54, Alden 52, Alden 50, Alden 46, Alden 45, and Alden 44 that are more modern cruising sailboats. Alden Yachts was initially known for the fast, seaworthy offshore schooners that brought attention to the firm, and then expanded to a wide range of exceptional sailing yachts, with a sprinkling of motor yachts in the portfolio. Most of the Alden powerboats were built during the 1950s decade. The Classic Alden Yachts available on the preowned yacht market are sought after for their seaworthy performance, and seakindly, bluewater capabilities.

Currently there are 24 preowned Alden sailing yachts and boats available on the USA yacht MLS, ranging in year from vintage 1912 to 1994. From vintage years 1907 to 1949, a 1912 25ft Alden Corinthian One-Design is listed at about $29,000 ranging in price to a 1938 62ft Alden Motor Sailer at about $2.6 million. From Classic years 1950 to 1979, a 1974 Alden Dolphin 47 is listed at about $76,000 ranging in price to a 1969 4ft Alden Caravelle Yawl at about $249,000. From 1980 to 2008, a 1980 19ft Alden Biddeford Pool One Design is listed at about $10,000 ranging in price to a 1984 Alden Palmer Johnson 78 at about $695,000.

Off Center Harbor's Remarks

(Was $18,900) Joel White used to say it takes more skill to get a little boat design to look good than a big one. Few designers drew more beguiling small boats than Fenwick Williams and this snug little double-ender is surely a case-in-point. And what's more, she appears to be in outstanding condition. Although she would make a wonderful single-handed weekender, we think of her as an ideal daysailer with room below for an after-lunch nap before the sea breeze kicks up around two.

Description from Boat's Main Listing

Designed by Fenwick Williams and built by a Maine trained boatbuilder ZEPHYRUS has been meticulously maintained and is in sailaway condition. This pocket cruiser features many improvements by her current owner including a new mast (2017), boom (2017), standing and running rigging, and much more.

Comments by the owner:

While working in Alden’s office in 1928, Fenwick Williams designed this 21 foot “knockabout” double ender. The design is a smaller version of his 24’ gaff rigged yawl and is a remarkably spacious, compact, pocket cruiser. The fractional marconi rig carries 271 square feet of sail, and the ample freeboard of the spoon bow keeps sailors reasonably dry. This boat was painstakingly constructed in New Orleans by a Maine-trained builder who used every available technique to construct a rot-proof wooden boat including pressure treating the white oak ribs and selecting the most rot resistant species of wood. The boat went to Maine a few years after her launching to insure she did not fall victim to the humid conditions of the south, and her two Maine owners have worked extensively to preserve and upgrade her.

ZEPHYRUS was sailed regularly this past summer (2018) and is currently under cover where she is easily accessible.
