Spirit 111: This sailing art gallery is one of the most sensational yachts ever built

  • Toby Hodges
  • September 29, 2020

A technical masterpiece or a piece of art? The new Spirit 111 is somehow both, and is one of the most remarkable large yachts Toby Hodges has ever sailed

Powering upwind with green water rushing over the leeward rail, an enormous mahogany-clad wheel in hand and a view of the cleanest flush decks ahead, I couldn’t help but feel this was as good as it gets. This is real big boat sailing, yachting glamour at its finest.

It is tempting to compare this Spirit 111, with her timeless lines and towering sloop rig, to the mighty J Class , which are well known to evoke such rapturous feelings. After all, this is the largest single-masted wooden yacht to be built in Britain since the oldest existing J, Shamrock V , launched in 1930.

However, striking though any initial impressions are, there is so much more to the Ipswich-built Spirit 111 than first meets the eye. It has a multitude of qualities which combine to make it incomparable. In short, this is one of the most sensational yachts ever built.

First, there is the scale of the project. Not only is this one of the largest timber craft constructed on our shores, it is also one of very few yachts of this size capable of being sailed without a professional crew.

Spirit’s new flagship is a technical masterpiece. It is conceived to be one of the most environmentally friendly superyachts to date, a particularly demanding brief which has driven some fascinating solutions for the equipment and engineering throughout.

And finally – yet to my mind fundamentally – this Spirit 111 is an art exhibition, a yacht that takes aesthetics to new heights. The interior, from layout to furniture design to craftsmanship, is unlike anything seen on a boat before.

Bespoke brief

Geist , German for ghost or spirit, is “a project for someone who wanted to do something different from the norm,” confirms Spirit’s managing director, Nigel Stuart. This someone is a young European owner in his mid-thirties, who already has a Spirit 52 , but wanted something larger.

The result of his clear vision is a celebration of bespoke design and engineering. Going below decks feels like walking into a gallery. As long as you can put practicality aside, it’s a mind-boggling, fantastical experience.

The initial design started at 90ft, but in a clue to the importance of aesthetics, got stretched an additional 20ft to ensure the most appealing lines. A skipper will help maintain the yacht, but while on board the owner wants to sail it himself. There isn’t even accommodation for crew. Many of us who view private time aboard our boats as sacrosanct may understand such a request, but it is rarely seen on this scale.

Our trial sail proved that such self-sufficiency really is possible, with most operations able to be carried out from the helm pedestal.

Sound of silence

I joined Geist at Endeavour Quay, Gosport, a significant venue for it was here, under the yard’s former owner, Camper & Nicholsons, that the British J Class yachts were built in the 1930s.

Leaving port is a smooth, peaceful affair. As we glided silently away from the dock and entered the bustle of Portsmouth Harbour, the only detectable noise on board came from the turning of the prop or the whir of a hydraulic pump.

The Torqeedo electric drive is always ready for instant activation, with no pre-heat needed and no throttle lag. Just push the lever. This is particularly handy if you need a quick burst of power to help the bows through the wind or to clear an obstruction while under sail. Spirit has also fitted a power on/off button, a sensible safety measure to avoid accidental operation.

Hoisting sail is equally without fuss. It involves using one finger on a portable remote control to instruct the boom mandrel to unfurl the main, and another to direct the main halyard to pull the sail up the four-spreader carbon mast.

As the genoa released, I let the bows fall off a little and Geist powered up gracefully. What a feeling!

We were treated to a proper sea trial of an elegant large yacht. Sailing upwind at 10-11.5 knots and back down at 12-14 knots makes the Solent seem pretty small. It is a delight in both directions, but particularly on the breeze with a rail awash and 23-27 knots blowing over the decks.

Sheeting off a bit of main in gusts is done via the push of another button to release the captive mainsheet or drop the traveller down the rail. It all seemed so manageable considering the sail area aloft. These are the largest sails yet produced by the OneSails UK loft and use its 4T Forte technology, a recyclable performance cloth.

It was also the most breeze Geist had sailed in and we kept full sail up for the duration. She handled it all with delicious ease as we worked our way through the deeper parts of the Solent.

In its own class

It is easy to fall into the trap of comparing this Spirit to a J Class. I’ve been lucky enough to sail a few Js, including the three built at Camper & Nicholsons that are still afloat today. But there are fundamental differences.

Js are traditional long-keelers that are three times the weight of Geist . They are stubborn, awkward yachts to handle and certainly need a large crew who know their salt. If the helmsman doesn’t work in harmony with the mainsail trimmer, for example, a recalcitrant J will refuse to turn.

Not so the Spirit. This is a lightweight composite machine, a speedster in comparison, complete with T-keel, a carbon spade rudder and direct steering. If you have sailed a Spirit before, you will know they are highly rewarding on the wheel and the Spirit 111 is no different. It’s balanced and delightfully direct.

This Spirit 111 is perhaps more comparable to the Js when it comes to use of technology . The original J Class owners were known for pushing innovation in their quest for America’s Cup spoils. Spirit Yachts has done the same here, with a focus on ease of operation and environmental efficiency.

Geist ’s highly technical construction uses wood epoxy on stainless steel space frames to ensure a stiff structure for a light displacement under 60 tonnes. The majority of this weight has been kept central and low down, with little to weigh down the 40ft of overhangs, which all equates to a high righting moment and ballast ratio (45%).

The times when I was left alone in the cockpit, with 80ft or so of flush deck up ahead and all that sail area above, were particularly exhilarating and I started to understand the owner’s desire to sail short-handed.

With the push-button controls making it a doddle to trim, and backwinding winches making it easier and safer to ease high loads, in fact Geist is more analogous to an overgrown daysailer than a J, which is more appropriate given the owner’s brief.

Where Js are bewitching to sail upwind, modern performance boats are all about the downwind thrills. The Spirit 111 gives you a taste of both, making you crave every minute on the helm.

Once past Cowes, we hoisted the furling code sail. Manhandling such a large sail, combined with the occasional groan from a loaded winch, were telling reminders of Geist ’s size and power. But once set and trimmed, the cableless sail helped generate that sportsboat feel, especially when we had the sea room to heat it up a little.

Hand crafted wonder

The credit for Geist ’s timeless lines and her balance under sail goes to Spirit’s co-founder Sean McMillan, who has drawn all the Spirit yachts to date. He has also built up a team of world-class craftsmen in his Ipswich yard.

Look anywhere around Geist ’s deck and you’ll be struck by the hand-built details. Around her flush aft deck, for example, you’ll notice the eyelet fairleads in the transom, the way the bulwark curves around her pushpit and the perfect angle of the ensign staff. This is the type of deck jewellery Spirit specialises in. But the real showpiece aboard Geist is reserved for below decks.

I cannot think of another yacht that is so impressive on the outside, so thrilling and memorable to sail, yet the interior is even more striking.

The saloon seating is made from strips of 10x10mm American walnut, steam-bent into shape, and took 2,000 hours to build. Photo: Mike Jones / Waterline Media

The owner had visited Antelope Canyon in Arizona and drew inspiration from its famously smooth, flowing sandstone shapes, the light beams and reflections. The resultant S-shaped layout of Geist ’s interior, with its free-flowing curves and sculptural furniture, is nothing short of an artistic wonderland.

The saloon table and surround seating, floodlit by a fanlight of glass in the coachroof above, is the centrepiece of the yacht. Artistic simplicity like this is incredibly hard to achieve.

There are only two vertical bulkheads on the boat and only three different types of timber used: sipo (mahogany) bulkheads, teak soles and American walnut furniture. The sipo has all been cut from one log to ensure matching grain throughout, which makes for a magnificent sight.

For the first time Spirit used an independent design agency, Rhoades Young, who came up with the novel layout and drew the capstan-style table. This table has 64 wooden legs, all of which are curved, each with slightly different measurements.

Two former Spirit employees, Will Fennell and Ben Jackson, fashioned the artistic steam-bent seating. This exquisitely detailed design feature, which is also replicated on the bedheads in the owner’s and VIP cabins, “blurs the line between furniture and sculpture,” declares Jonathan Rhoades.

Initially the galley was designed to join this table and seating arrangement, however the owner didn’t want anything to detract from the centrepiece. Even now all galley elements are hidden below the countertop and inside lockers.

Visuals first

Aesthetics, you quickly learn, trump all else on Geist . The owner didn’t want to see door handles, so Spirit used sensor-activated latches. Placing a finger across the recessed sensor triggers the latch (and yes, if you lose power, the doors all open automatically).

The joiners have managed to match the grain on these bowed-out sections to the rest of the bulwark, thereby camouflaging the handle recesses by maintaining a contoured look. The result is that you can’t see any cabins from the saloon, or even their doors, just an undulating maze of mahogany.

“This is someone who really knows what he wants as the overall picture,” Stuart comments.

The capstan table has 64 legs, each one a slightly different shape and measurement. Photo: Mike Jones / Waterline Media

The sofa to starboard appears to float, seemingly growing out of the side of the hull. Above this a panel can be removed to reveal the sailing instruments and electronics that would typically be at the navstation. These screens are hidden away when the yacht is at rest.

The shadow gaps in the panels and joiner work are so precise you can’t see where lockers are built in. Were it not pointed out to me I’d never have noticed the door opposite the owner’s cabin, which leads into a large mechanical room.

There are no discernible fixings, no plumbing visible in the four ensuite heads. The owner didn’t even want the heads to be seen. Lift the solid timber lid of a heads and you’ll find sections for loo roll and a brush neatly built-in and concealed. It’s precision craftsmanship to the very last detail.

spirit-111-superyacht-geist-saloon-credit-Mike-Jones-Waterline-Media

Interior lighting adjusts automatically to match the conditions. Photo: Mike Jones / Waterline Media

There are no visible light switches either. The lighting uses a network of motion-activated and light-sensitive sensors. If it goes cloudy above the saloon fanlight windows, the interior light adjusts accordingly. It ensures there are no big differences in brightness between outside and in, matching the soft yellow natural light in the morning or a golden evening glow.

At night, motion sensors activate floor lighting to guide you. These are intelligent, so they are designed to light the way to the heads if you move in that direction from your berth. “If a guest starts to go elsewhere in the interior, the system will deduce which way they are going and light the relevant areas in a very soft warm light,” Stuart explains. It’s like being aboard a wooden spaceship.

The banality of practicality

Most sailors will naturally question the practicality issues aboard Geist . Can you imagine setting your mug of tea down on that table? Or being at heel and sliding across the near 20ft of beam from galley to navstation sofa? Unfortunately, were you to do so, you might connect with one of the only hard edges on the boat on the aft end of the saloon seating!

The fear of damaging the woodwork might drive you to distraction. And with the elaborate open spaces of the saloon and so much volume lost in the overhangs, Geist is comparatively compact below. There are only four cabins and no crew accommodation at all.

However, you need to adjust your mindset aboard this yacht. The rules of practicality do not govern art. They’re not something the owner of a seven-cum-eight figure yacht such as this should necessarily be concerned with.

“Sean [McMillan] and I had pointed out the total impracticalities along the way,” says Stuart. “The owner could understand it – he loves racing his Spirit 52 and understands sailing boats.”

spirit-111-superyacht-geist-heads-credit-Mike-Jones-Waterline-Media

The mahogany trim continues in the heads, with sinks machined out of the same wood. Photo: Mike Jones / Waterline Media

The owner did concede elements might need to be added at a later date to make Geist more practical, says Stuart, but initially he didn’t want anything to detract from the visuals.

“It’s not that Spirit can’t do practical. We’re just delivering on his brief,” Stuart points out. This project certainly shows just how customised a custom yacht really can be.

Eco collaboration

A key priority was to make the yacht as environmentally friendly as possible. The shell of Geist is built using responsibly sourced timber and the yacht is dressed with recyclable sails, but it’s the power system that forms the heart of her green credentials.

The 100kW electric motor can propel Geist silently for 30 miles at 8 knots using high-voltage battery power alone. The propeller regenerates power to the four 40kWh BMW battery banks while sailing too. This makes it possible to run for four days without needing to start a generator or plug into shorepower.

“When the yacht crosses the Atlantic, as long as there is adequate wind, she will not need to consume any fossil fuels,” Stuart predicts. During her initial delivery trips, Geist has averaged 11-13 knots under sail, at which speed she consistently regenerates 3kW.

Two 25kW Torqeedo gensets are installed, but these are for class compliance purposes and will be used only as a back-up to the electric system. “The owner said to go as far as we can while making it reliable,” Stuart explains.

spirit-111-superyacht-geist-sail-plan

Mounted above the electric drive is a Lewmar Vortex reservoir, a system that reduces hydraulic oil needs (and therefore waste) by 90%. It requires just 25lt of oil, giving a weight saving of over 50% over a traditional power pack. The hydraulics can operate in eco mode for lowest battery consumption and have fast cruise or race options.

Meanwhile, the air-conditioning uses a variable-speed compressor, which ensures it can be run overnight without needing generator power.

The hot water employs a highly efficient on-demand system, which minimises wasted water and energy, and Cryogel insulation is used for the refrigeration to ensure low temperature holding for minimal power.

The main engine room space is particularly well-laid-out, with access from the deck or interior, and contains a sewage treatment plant to ensure waste water is clean.

A spirited vessel

I have been fortunate enough to sail many large yachts. Some look striking, sail particularly handsomely or are easy to manage.

Others have standout interiors or the craftsmanship shines above all else. And, latterly, it has been heartening to see more superyachts with an eco-friendly slant.

But I have never seen or sailed a yacht that has so many of these attributes wrapped into one exquisitely elegant, unique and extrovertly custom package. Aboard Geist , art has successfully married with technology and created something truly stunning.

Spirit 111 - Retro Classic Yacht with Incredible Interior

The spirit 111 is an awesome retro classic sailing yacht with incredible interior design and state-of-the-art technology..

The Spirit 111 combines the grace of classic sailing yachts but with modern technologies like hybrid propulsion with a 100 kW electric engine by Torqeedo, supported by four 40 kWh BMW battery packs. The boat can run about 30 nautical miles with the electric drive. The electric motor also works as a hydrodynamic generator to regenerate the batteries while sailing. Furthermore, there are two 25 kW generators as a backup solution.

Nigel Stuart, Managing Director of Spirit Yachts comments:

“It is important to the owner that he can spend the majority of his time away from marinas enjoying sailing and anchoring in bays. Using electric propulsion to regenerate the batteries whilst sailing, the yacht will be able to operate for up to four days at anchor without having to plug into shore power or start the two onboard generators. When the yacht crosses the Atlantic, as long as there is adequate wind, she will not need to consume any fossil fuels.”

Sean McMillan – founder and head designer at Spirit Yachts, created the elegant exterior design of the sailing yacht.

Spirit 111 Sailing Yacht

A wave-styled interior design

This kind of interior design is far away from this world and has been penned by Rhoades Young and the shipyard’s in-house team.

Rhoades Young partner Jonathan Rhoades commented:

“It was a joy to work with a client with an absolute passion for design. The brief was a combination of his love for furniture and organic architecture. The client had recently visited Antelope Canyon in Arizona and this was the catalyst for the idea of the warm soft flowing walls creating unique focal points within the room. Whilst appearing simple these twisting forms are co-ordinated perfectly with the beautiful skylights above creating a calm and tranquil ambiance. These elegant forms not only twist and peel to create counters but uniquely create the intimate backdrops for the highly detailed ‘steam pieces’ which blur the line between furniture and sculpture. It has been an absolute privilege to work on this project with the client and the craftsmen and women who created it.”

The systems of the hotel functions are optimized for low energy consumption. The Webasto air conditioning and heating system have two eco modes (and a maximum as well). The system is efficient enough to run the air conditioning also in the tropical areas over the night. Hot water is stored in a high density insulated tank.

The freezer and the fridge are custom-made equipment and using high-efficient compressors and CryoGel to hold very low temperatures.

Spirit Yachts unveils the interior design of their eco-friendly superyacht Spirit 111′

  • Stef Bottinelli

Spirit Yachts have revealed the interior design of Spirit 111'. The superyacht will be launched in summer 2019

Spirit Yachts Spirit 111' saloon

Spirit Yachts, have debuted the final designs for its 34m sailing yacht, the Spirit 111’. The sloop-rigged yacht is set to be the longest build from Spirit Yachts to date. Spirit Yachts worked closely with the overseas buyer, who requested the boat be designed to be one of the most environmentally friendly sailing superyachts ever created.

The initial concepts for the interior of the Spirit 111’ were created in partnership with Rhoades Young. Spirit Yachts’ design team then worked closely with the owner to develop the drawings into final renderings. The designs showcase a unique, curved interior with sleek contours bringing together the walls, bulkheads and furniture, into one flowing design.

Renders of a yacht layout

Spirit Yachts head designer Sean McMillan commented: “The Spirit 111 has been completely customised throughout and as a result her interior is totally unique. The design is a never-ending swirl of organic shapes, which encompass the practicalities necessary in a yacht but in a highly imaginative way. I am very much looking forward to unveiling the finished interior as it is truly remarkable.”

The interior of Spirit 111 is all seamless, fluid and curved lines. Walls and bulkheads flow in an ‘S’ shape, storage space is, whilst doors are discreet with concealed handles. To open a door, one places one’s hand inside a hidden recess, in which sensors detect the movement and release the catch to open the door. The bespoke curved furniture is made with American walnut timber and it creates an illusion that it’s part of the structure of the yacht, creating a seamless appearance throughout.

Spirit Yachts Spirit 111' saloon

Steps lead down to the central saloon and open plan galley to port. The middle of the saloon boasts a circular, two-piece seating area around a dining table, with an additional curved sofa on the starboard side. The seating took over 2,000 man-hours to build and is handmade using strips of American walnut timber.

The owner’s cabin and VIP guest cabin – both with ensuite bathroom – are placed forward of the saloon and galley and accessed via a curved corridor. In both cabins, a C-shaped arrangement will house a double bed, with an additional curved sofa in the master suite. Aft of the saloon are two ensuite guest cabins, both with C-shaped cocoon arrangements around double beds. Keen to sail the boat himself, the owner of the Spirit 111 has asked for no crew accommodation.

Spirit Yachts Spirit 111' owner's cabin

The lighting system onboard will complement the seamless approach to the interior layout. Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart explained: “The interior lighting is controlled by sun sensors so the brightness is adjusted to ensure there is no difference between outside and inside, there will be no pockets of shade and light as you would normally have.

“The interior will have no light switches; motion sensors will turn lights on and off during the day and during the night, sensors under the beds will detect if someone is up and light the way to the nearest ensuite. If a guest starts to go elsewhere within the interior, the system will deduce which way they are going and light the relevant areas in a very soft yellow light.”

Spirit Yachts has collaborated with marine and automotive suppliers to fulfil the owner’s eco wishes. A Torqeedo electric propulsion system using a 100kW motor will propel the yacht silently for up to 40nm at eight knots from battery power alone. Whilst sailing, the propulsion system will regenerate the four BMWi lithium battery banks by rotating the propeller shaft whilst the yacht is under sail. All power-consuming components have been carefully selected to be highly efficient and will use minimal energy without impacting performance or comfort.

The Spirit 111’ is the largest single-masted wooden yacht to be built in the UK since Shamrock V in the 1930s. Once completed, this eco-friendly superyacht will also be one of few capable of cruising without professional crew. Energy efficient Lewmar hydraulic deck hardware and OneSails GBR (East) 4T Forte sails made from recyclable materials will be fitted to a Hall Spar carbon fibre mast and in-boom furling to facilitate short-handed sailing.

The hull rollover of Spirit Yachts’ Spirit 111′ has taken place at the luxury brand’s Ipswich yard

The hull rollover of the much awaited Spirit Yachts’ 34m sailing yacht Spirit 111’ took place in Ipswich on Tuesday (20 February).

With a beam of 6.4m, Spirit 111’ is one of the largest single-masted wooden yachts to be built since Camper & Nicholson’s Shamrock V in the 1930s.

Before the rollover, Spirit 111’ was moved outside before been lifted into the air using multiple cranes to rotate the hull in preparation for its next stage, the internal fit out.

Set to be completed in 2019, the new vessel is all about clean lines, elegance and style. It boasts unprecedented eco credentials, and will be one of a few superyachts capable of sailing without a professional crew due to its innovative deck arrangement.

These credentials will enable the owner to spend sustainable periods of time onboard using minimal fuel. Innovative eco features include an electric drive system, supported by four lithium battery banks, which will power the yacht for modest distances or when manoeuvring. Under sail, the system will automatically regenerate the batteries, and with careful consumption the yacht will operate solely under battery power. There is also the option of two back-up generators for longer distance propulsion.

spirit yachts' spirit 111' hull

The air conditioning, galley equipment, generators and water heaters have all been selected to consume the lowest amount of power possible and to produce the minimum levels of emissions when in operation.

Its strength to weight ratio, along with carbon rig and energy efficient hydraulic deck hardware, is set to offer exceptional sailing performance.

The construction of the Spirit 111’s 34m hull began with construction of laminated wooden ring frames along with a duplex stainless-steel central reinforcement cage. This was placed upside down onto a timber strongback before the centreline structure and beam shelves were fitted. The fore and aft planking was then bonded to the ringframes followed by quadruple-diagonal veneers, which were epoxy-bonded at 45° under vacuum before the hull was finally covered with an epoxy glass sheath.

“The end result will be one of the largest, single-masted modern classic wooden yachts ever built in the UK,” added the designer.

Planned to launch in summer 2019, the Spirit 111 will begin construction next month at Spirit Yachts’ waterside headquarters in Suffolk.

Rhoades Young director Jonathan Rhoades said it is exciting to be working on such a significant project.

“Spirit Yachts is renowned for its build quality and elegant design, and we are looking forward to working alongside Sean and his team on what is set to be a ground-breaking new project,” he stated.

Commissioned for an experienced yachtsman, who plans to attend the superyacht regattas in the Mediterranean, the Spirit 111 will be set up for both cruising and racing with carbon spars, hydraulic winches and an extensive sail wardrobe.

The impressive new superyacht is set to be as eco-friendly as possible to enable the owner to spend sustainable periods of time onboard using minimal fuel.

11 Most anticipated launches of 2017

Innovative features include an electric drive system, supported by four lithium battery banks, which will power the yacht for modest distances or when manoeuvring.

Under sail, the system will automatically regenerate the batteries, and with careful consumption the yacht will operate solely under battery power. For longer distance propulsion, the owner has the option of two back-up generators.

Green credentials have been considered throughout the yacht’s systems; the air conditioning, galley equipment, generators and water heaters will be set up to consume the lowest amount of power possible.

All equipment has been carefully selected to produce the minimum levels of emissions when in operation and during any future maintenance.

Spirit Yachts unveils striking sailing yacht interior

The british yacht builder reveals the unique new interiors of the spirit 111….

British sailing yacht builder Sprit Yachts has unveiled the final designs for its 34m Spirit 111 superyacht, prior to its scheduled launch this summer. Described by the shipyard as ‘one of the most environmentally-friendly sailing yachts ever created’, upon completion the new sloop will be the largest single-masted wooden sailing yacht built in the UK since the 1930s.

Created in collaboration with Rhodes Young, the interior of the yacht certainly isn’t your standard classical design, with a completely curved interior, which has been created with the helix in mind. Alongside the Rhodes Young team and the in-house design team at Spirit Yachts, the European owner was very much involved in the design process of the Spirit 111 - working closely with the professionals to arrive at this very unique result.

The Spirit 111 has been completely customised throughout, and as a result, her interior is totally unique. The design is a never-ending swirl of organic shapes, which encompass the practicalities necessary in a yacht but in a highly imaginative way. I am very much looking forward to unveiling the finished interior as it is truly remarkable.” - says Sean McMillan Head Designer at Spirit Yachts.

The term ‘flowing interior’ is one that its widely used in the superyacht industry, but it has never been so appropriate. Walls and bulkheads flow in an ‘S’ shape throughout the interior, whilst discreet doors and hidden storage create smooth lines and a more contoured appearance. The bespoke curved walnut furniture throughout the yacht has been designed to blend into the structures in order to continue the seamless look the owner had hoped for, so much so, even the door handles have been hidden.

A smart lighting system on board will also adhere to the owner’s wish for a ‘blended interior’ as there are also no light switches in the interior, just sensors. “The interior lighting is controlled by sun sensors, so the brightness is adjusted to ensure there is no difference between outside and inside, there will be no pockets of shade and light as you would normally have,” says Spirit Yachts Managing Director Nigel Stuart.

“The interior will have no light switches; motion sensors will turn lights on and off during the day and during the night, sensors under the beds will detect if someone is up and light the way to the nearest ensuite. If a guest starts to go elsewhere within the interior, the system will deduce which way they are going and light the relevant areas in a very soft yellow light.” - Nigel Stuart, Managing Director at Spirit Yachts

“The interior will have no light switches; motion sensors will turn lights on and off during the day and during the night, sensors under the beds will detect if someone is up and light the way to the nearest ensuite,” continues Stuart. “If a guest starts to go elsewhere within the interior, the system will deduce which way they are going and light the relevant areas in a very soft yellow light.”

As the yacht has been designed to be helmed by the owner, there is also no crew accommodation on board. A strict eco-brief was also provided by the owner, who wanted to use minimal energy without impacting the performance of the yacht, leading to Spirit’s collaboration with leading marine and automotive suppliers. A Torqeedo electric propulsion system using a 100kW motor will propel the yacht silently for up to 40nm at eight knots from battery power alone. And, whilst under sail, the propulsion system will regenerate the four BMWi lithium battery banks by rotating the propeller shaft.

Sailing Instruments for all boats

Spirit 111: a yacht of no compromise

Building the most eco-friendly yacht in the world. It was an assignment the British Spirit Yachts received   loud and clear . For the renowned boat builder however, the superyacht owners wishes were right up   their street . Integrating modern technology into classic designs is what has been driving Spirit Yachts for decades. Nevertheless, the Spirit 111 remained a challenging process with exceptional wishes. In more than one way.

The climate change discussion is a hot topic. Not surprisingly, more and more owners in the sailing community are rethinking their carbon footprint. An ongoing trend according to managing director at Spirit Yachts, Nigel Stuart: ”Certain owners are approaching us knowing they want an eco-friendly yacht.  In these cases, we work with the owners to deliver on their goals and suggest new ways in which we can innovate to make the yacht as sustainable as possible. Other owners come to us knowing they want a Spirit and as discussions evolve they realize what we are capable of and opt for more eco-friendly solutions.” The extent to which boats are made eco-friendly vary greatly. One owner opts for a near-total self-sufficiency, while others go for fuel efficiency. ”To whatever extent it is, it’s not hard to sell,'” Stuart says. ”Often the eco-friendly option wins on other credentials, such as cost or weight for example. Half the projects in the yard at the moment are electric drive yachts.”

spirit 111 yacht interior

In order to meet the eco-wishes of Spirit 111’s owner, Spirit Yachts collaborated with leading marine and automotive suppliers. ”We analyzed every aspect of the Spirit 111 and asked ourselves if we could approach it in a more sustainable way,” Stuart explains. “The electric propulsion system is the most innovative example. A Torqeedo electric propulsion system, using a 100kW engine, will propel the yacht silently for up to 40nm at eight knots from battery power alone. The propulsion system will regenerate the four BMW lithium battery banks by rotating the propeller shaft whilst the yacht is under sail. It is important to the owner that he can spend the majority of his time away from marinas enjoying sailing and anchoring in bays. By using electric propulsion to regenerate the batteries whilst sailing, the yacht will be able to operate for up to four days without having to plug into shore power or start the two onboard generators. When the yacht crosses the Atlantic, as long as there is the adequate wind, she will not need to consume any fossil fuels.”

spirit 111 yacht interior

Not only in the engine room, but also with regard to the interior, Spirit Yachts has made some remarkably durable arrangements. ”She has energy efficient interior systems, lighting and winches, as well as recyclable sails and of course she is built from sustainable timber.  The yacht will last 100 years, but if she ever does reach the end of her lifetime, her component parts can be recycled or re-used and her wooden interior and hull can be used for anything from furniture to fencing or even another boat,” according to Stuart.

spirit 111 yacht interior

However, anyone who sees the interior of the yacht will not immediately notice its durability. It is mainly the exceptional design that attracts attention. Everything is rounded. No line is straight. Everything fits seamlessly down to the smallest detail. In collaboration with the external design agency Rhoades Young, the exceptional ideas finally came to life on paper. ”Often interior yacht design is about maximizing the space to provide as much as possible in terms of storage, accommodation etc. Spirit 111 is the opposite; the interior has always been about  a esthetic and practicality,” says Stuart. ”The curved wooden doors were particularly challenging.  Not only creating the shape and fitting the doors, but also the ‘invisible’ door handles. Instead of a conventional handle, the doors have a notch or hole to place your hand in order to operate a sensor that opens the door automatically.”

With all of its eccentric demands, the Spirit 111 may give the impression of not being the most easy yacht to sail. Nothing could be further from the truth. Stuart explains: ‘Most of our owners lead busy working lives so they dream of being able to get away from it all with their family and friends.  Whilst our yachts look detailed and complicated, they are relatively easy to handle, so most Spirit owners go cruising with very little professional help or no crew at all. We strongly believe in encouraging people to go sailing in any way they feel comfortable. Enjoyment out on the water is the most important thing, whether you are an owner-driver with no support or if you have a skipper and full professional crew.’’

Whether the owner and crew will enjoy this Spirit 111 is no longer the question. Beauty, performance and sustainability come together in this 111-meter long high-performance cruiser. The integration of the Sailmon   Model E4 Silver Processor   purely underlines the wishes of its owner. ”Every element of the Spirit 111 has been chosen because it delivers the highest quality and performance. This is a yacht of no compromise.”

New Spirit 111 Unveiled: A Sailing Yacht or An Artwork?

spirit 111

Spirit Yachts unveiled its highly anticipated 34m sailing yacht, the Spirit 111 .  With eco features throughout and a stand-out interior design, the sloop-rigged yacht is the largest single-masted wooden sailing yacht to be built in the UK since Shamrock V in the 1930s.

At the request of her overseas buyer, the Spirit 111 has been designed and built in-house by Spirit Yachts to be one of the most environmentally friendly sailing superyachts ever created.

Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart commented, “ Showcasing the Spirit 111 under sail and revealing her unique interior is a real milestone for the company.  The yacht is incredibly complex in her design and engineering and we are very proud of what we have delivered.  It’s been a challenging journey, which has given us the opportunity to innovate and gain insight for future superyacht and eco-focused builds. ”

spirit 111

Spirit Yachts worked collaboratively with leading marine and automotive suppliers to deliver on the owner’s eco brief.  A  Torqeedo electric propulsion system  using a 100kW motor will propel the yacht silently for up to 30nm at eight knots from battery power alone.  Whilst sailing, the propulsion system will regenerate the four BMW lithium battery banks by rotating the propeller shaft whilst the yacht is under sail. All power-consuming components have been carefully selected to be highly efficient and will use minimal energy without impacting performance or comfort.

Away from marinas

Nigel Stuart explained: “ It is important to the owner that he can spend the majority of his time away from marinas enjoying sailing and anchoring in bays.  Using electric propulsion to regenerate the batteries whilst sailing, the yacht will be able to operate for up to four days at anchor without having to plug into shore power or start the two onboard generators.  When the yacht crosses the Atlantic, as long as there is adequate wind, she will not need to consume any fossil fuels. ”

Sean McMillan

Nigel continued: “ By partnering with suppliers and challenging ourselves to create customised solutions using the latest energy-saving technology, we have created one of the world’s most sustainable superyachts.  From construction, using responsibly sourced timber to carbon-saving systems whilst in operation, the Spirit 111 sets a new standard for reducing the impact sailing has on our environment. ”

The air conditioning uses variable speeds with eco options via battery or shore power and the galley has been designed with ultimate efficiency in mind.  The fridge and freezer were built with Cryogel insulation to ensure minimal power consumption whilst holding low temperatures.

spirit 111

Water is heated using a  Webasto system , which only heats water on demand ensuring no wasted water or energy, and the heated water is stored within high-density insulation and high-efficiency transfer coils for rapid heat transfer and temperature retention.

The Spirit 111 is also one of few superyachts capable of cruising without a professional crew.  Energy efficient  Lewmar  hydraulic deck hardware and  OneSails GBR (East) 4T FORTE™ sails  made from materials that can be recycled are fitted to a  Hall Spars  carbon fibre mast and in-boom furling to facilitate short-handed sailing.

Spirit founder and head designer Sean McMillan commented: “ A single-masted wooden yacht of this size that can be owner-driven is nothing less than a feat of engineering.  The yacht’s impressive strength to weight ratio, a carbon rig and lightweight, performance sails will allow the owner to compete at regattas worldwide. ”

spirit 111

A unique, curved interior

The interior of the Spirit 111 was designed in partnership with  Rhoades Young , which is Spirit Yachts ’ first collaboration with an external design agency. Rhoades Young developed the initial concept for a unique, curved interior, which Spirit Yachts’ design team developed and brought to life in the final plans.

Rhoades Young partner Jonathan Rhoades commented: “ It was a joy to work with a client with an absolute passion for design. These elegant forms not only twist and peel to create counters but uniquely create the intimate back drops for the highly detailed ‘steam pieces’ which blur the line between furniture and sculpture. It has been an absolute privilege to work on this project with the client and the craftsmen and women who created it. ”

spirit 111

Spirit Yachts head designer Sean McMillan commented: “ The Spirit 111 has been completely customised throughout and as a result her interior is totally unique.  The design is a never-ending swirl of organic shapes, encompassing the practicalities necessary in a yacht but in a highly imaginative way. ”

The Spirit 111 owner’s representative, Marcus Wright, added: “ It was a great privilege to represent the owner’s interests and ensure we delivered a yacht that surpassed his expectations.  With the knowledge that Spirit Yachts can make absolutely anything in wood, it was a thoroughly enjoyable process to take Rhoades Young’s beautiful interpretation of an unusual brief and assist in the creation of such a work of art. ”

spirit 111

Down below, walls and bulkheads flow in an ‘S’ shape through the interior, which has a natural look and feel thanks to the combination of the exposed Sipo, teak and American Walnut timbers on show.  A bespoke, curved American Walnut seating arrangement takes centre stage in the open plan saloon-galley and C-shaped arrangements created from steamed timber curve over the beds in the owner’s and VIP cabins. Discreet doors with hidden, sensor-activated recesses, rather than visible door handles, ensure smooth lines and a contoured look throughout.

Spirit 111 Sailing Yacht Geist Leaves Spirit Yard

Spirit Yachts's 33.9 metre flagship  Spirit 111  sailing yacht  Geist has now left the Suffolk based yard and is en route to the south coast of the UK.

Since hitting the water for the first time on October 8, the yacht has been based at the Spirit yard for commissioning, which included the installation of the mast, boom and sails.

The yacht is now the thee largest single-masted wooden yacht to be built in the UK since  Shamrock V  in 1930 and is also the largest sailing superyacht to come from the Suffolk-based yard to date, easily surpassing the 30.66 metre  Gaia , which launched in 2007.

Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart paid tribute to the yard's diligence in the construction of the yacht. "We're obsessed," he said. "A lot of hard work and passion has gone into it and our people are just so determined to make sure it’s perfect."

Spirit has also revealed more details about the eco-credentials of the yacht, which is powered by a Torqeedo electric propulsion system using a 100kW motor. This can propel the yacht for up to 40nm at eight knots from battery power alone. The four BMW lithium battery banks will be recharged during sailing by the rotating propeller shaft.

Stuart previously described the yacht as "one of the world's most sustainable superyachts".

"From construction using responsibly sourced timber to carbon-saving systems whilst in operation, the Spirit 111 sets a new standard for reducing the impact sailing has on our environment," he said.

He also revealed that the owner intends to "spend the majority of his time away from marinas enjoying sailing and anchoring in bays."

The yacht has been designed with a simple sail plan to enable cruising without crew. Spirit founder and head designer Sean McMillan described this as "nothing less than a feat of engineering."

"The yacht’s impressive strength to weight ratio, a carbon rig and lightweight, performance sails will allow the owner to compete competitively in the Mediterranean regattas," he added.

The launch of the yacht comes after the yard revealed the "flowing" interiors of the sailing yacht for the first time. Penned by  Rhoades Youn g , the interior design features the "sleek contours" of the interior walls, bulkheads and furniture which unite to create a "flowing design".

The curvaceous interior also features floating beds inside cocoons made from steamed tapered timbers.

The initial interior concepts and drawings by  Rhoades Young  were later refined by Spirit Yachts' in-house design team, who worked closely with the owner. It is the first time the Ipswich based yard has worked with an external interior design firm.

Speaking about the project, Rhoades Young partner Jonathan Rhoades said: “It was a joy to work with a client with an absolute passion for design. The brief was a combination of his love for furniture and organic architecture." Stuart described the interior as "a work of art".

The bespoke seating and bed heads were built by former Spirit Yachts employees Will Fennell and Ben Jackson. The two-part seating arrangement is constructed out of strips of American walnut, while the completed sofa, which features "sweeping curves", took over 1,000 man hours to build by hand.

Accommodation meanwhile is for a total of eight guests in four ensuite cabins, including the forward owner's cabin.

Featuring exterior lines by Spirit Yachts's head designer  Sean McMillan , the sailing yacht is being built to RINA standards from a wood epoxy composite supported by a stainless steel space frame.

Spirit Yachts Spirit 111, United Kingdom: Standard Range & Low Profile Range

spirit 111 yacht interior

The Spirit 111 sloop is the largest single-masted wooden yacht to be built in the UK since the 1930’s and also one of the most environmentally friendly sailing superyachts ever built.

Its radical curved interior, created by Spirit Yachts in partnership with Rhoades Young, features flowing walls and bulkheads built with a combination of Sipo, teak and American Chestnut. Fastmount’s hidden fixings were used to help bring the contoured look to life.

“In keeping with the yacht’s interior, the owner didn’t want to see any fixings, so it took us a long while to find something until we tried the Fastmount Metal Range, which worked perfectly,” said Adrian Gooderham, Yard Manager at Spirit Yachts. “We now use Fastmount as the standard fittings on all Spirit yachts.”

A combination of the Fastmount Standard Range and Low Profile Range was used on bulkheads and headlinings, while the Metal Range was used for sole boards, chosen according to panel weight. The final result was smooth, contoured lines throughout the interior without visible fixings, with the added bonus of non-sequential panel removal to gain access to services.

UPDATE ON THE SPIRIT 111 SUPERYACHT

Interior design.

As if the Spirit 111 wasn’t going to be eye-catching enough, the custom, hand-made saloon seating provides a clue as to what she might look like down below.

Currently undergoing interior fit out, the Spirit 111 is on track to launch next summer. With her coachroof recently fitted, a peak through the fan windows reveals curved internal walls and intricate features.

The bespoke seating and bed heads for the Spirit 111 are being built by Will Fennell and Ben Jackson; both former employees of Spirit Yachts, who have teamed up with the company on this landmark project.

Designed and developed by Spirit Yachts, the first of a two-part seating arrangement is made out of strips of 10mm x 10mm American Walnut, which in total length reach 1.2km. The sofa, which took over 1,000 man hours to build by hand features sweeping curves to complement the ebb and flow of the seamless wooden interior designed by Rhoades Young.

When asked what the most challenging aspect of the sofa was, Will explained: “The whole piece has been technically very challenging. Every aspect has been taken to a finite degree to achieve the standards required. It’s a collection of micro decisions taken almost continuously throughout the build, which come together to produce the end result. Maintaining a focus on all the details has been hard work; you get so engrossed in it that you don’t see the culmination until the very last moment.”

Will and Ben are now focusing on building the second element of the saloon seating, which will be in the same style but approximately half the size. Will commented: “Despite the smaller size, the second piece will take just as long to build as the first element due to the complex design.”

Away from the interior, Spirit Yachts can announce that the contract for the 111 sail wardrobe has been awarded to OneSails GBR (East).

Having pitched against competition from other sail makers, OneSails GBR (East) will be supplying a wardrobe of high performance, three dimensional, recyclable sails including a mainsail, jib, staysail, FFR flat furling reacher and a furling asymmetric. The sails will be fitted to a Hall Spar carbon fibre mast and in-boom furling to facilitate short-handed sailing.

Spirit Yachts managing director Nigel Stuart commented: “The supply of the Spirit 111’s sail wardrobe was decided by the owner’s management team. After extensive research, they awarded OneSails the business based on the team’s extensive knowledge of existing Spirit yachts, the technological advantages offered by 4T Forte sails, and the fact that 4T Forte sails are the only recyclable sails on the market.”

The sail membranes will be fitted with electronic chips that record data, which can then be used to help optimise sail performance, a feature that will come into its own during Mediterranean superyacht regattas.

John Parker from OneSails added: “The Spirit 111 is a fascinating project, which will bring together the leading marine suppliers in the UK. The Spirit 111 sails will most likely be the largest ever made on the east coast.”

Next steps for the Spirit 111 will be to fit the coachroof and finalise the cockpit. Keep an eye on Spirit Yachts’ Facebook and Instagram pages for the latest images from the build.
