Victory Team joins the recreational boat market with its latest offering the VTX 34 Cat

By Gregg Mansfield  Photos by Owen Blauman & Victory Team

The Victory Team has long been associated with offshore racing and last year the organization moved into the pleasure sport catamaran market, offering models from 27 to 34 feet.

The latest model, the VTX 34 Cat, had a coming out party last summer at the Lake of the Ozarks Shootout . Purchased by John Pugh and Janet Matzke of Seattle, the catamaran with twin Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboards was a stunner that turned heads on the dock.

Built in the same Dubai facility as the team’s race boats, the VTX 34 Cat is proof that Victory can compete in the recreational boat market too.

“It’s kind of like an iPhone, it was just a simple, clean style of boat, totally different,” Pugh said. “I saw the Victory and I was aware of who Victory was, I thought these are guys who build race boats. This isn’t some new guy that started out working out of his garage, these are some people that maybe forgot more about boat building than I know.”

Pugh was looking to replace his Nor-Tech 3600 Supercat and had been shopping catamarans when he saw Julian Maldonado at the Miami Boat Show with the new 32-foot Victory catamaran. They spent nearly three hours talking about the boat, the construction and the history of the team. What appealed to Pugh was the “gull wing” bottom design that was different from other catamaran models on the market.

“The way our sponsons are designed, we’re running on just a few inches of surface touching the water, it’s basically running on two knives is the best way to describe it,” said Ricky Maldonado, a representative for the Victory Team. “You’re not just grabbing air on the tunnel, you are grabbing air all throughout the sponsons all the way to the back. It’s a racing design. It’s been proven in XCAT racing and Super Stock.”

Pugh and Matzke flew into Tampa to test drive the 32-foot catamaran and loved how the boat handled. Rather than buying the model he test drove, Pugh wanted to take a chance on the VTX 34 Cat that had just been built in Dubai. The boat had a 2-inch wider beam and wider tunnels.

“We bought the boat because we love the way it handles, we like the integrity of how its built and the reliability,” Pugh said. “We can go out and have fun with it and rely on it and know it’s a safe running boat.”

The Victory catamaran was equipped with Mercury Racing Verado 400R outboards and the power plants are being upgraded to the new Mercury Racing 450R outboards. Pugh, who owns Marine Hardware Inc., talked to a few companies to learn more about the reliability on the 400-hp outboard. “They all said (the engines) were bulletproof, nothing ever goes wrong,” he said.

With the Mercury Racing 400R outboards, the catamaran should have a top speed of 118 to 121 mph when fully dialed in, Ricky Maldonado said. Cruising at 4,000 rpm, the VTX 34 Cat runs in the high 70-mph range, he said.

Pugh anticipates he’ll run the catamaran in the 90-mph range, while Matzke plans to run it a few ticks slower. “It’s an awful lot of fun to drive,” Pugh said. “I don’t think you really need to run much over 100 mph. We certainly don’t have to go 145 mph or 150 mph.”

victory catamarans

The cockpit is a traditional layout with two bucket seats up front with a center console for the controls, while the rear bench had three individual buckets. A large wraparound windshield protects the pilot and passengers from wind and spray.

The transom was covered with gray SeaDek nonskid and steps provided access to the water. Victory included a spacious stowage locker on the transom to stow lines and fenders. Three additional lockers were in the bow.

Although there is space on the transom for sterndrives, Maldonado said they are only building the 34-footer with outboards for now. The boat was painted and rigged in Dubai then shipped to the United States where it was delivered to Pugh and Matzke last summer at Lake of the Ozarks.

The VTX 34 Cat with twin Mercury Racing 400R engines retails for about $400,000 and includes a fairly custom paint job. “The ultimate Victory is a fully Victory-built boat, rigged at the factory, fine-tuned at the factory, props and set up,” Maldonado said.

victory catamarans

Currently Victory is offering three models including the 27- and 34-footers as well as the 32 Race Cat, which will be only for racing. Victory is building a high-performance center-console boat that is expected to make its debut at the Dubai International Boat Show in March, Maldonado said.

Victory has signed dealers in Florida and California but will also sell factory-direct to customers. Maldonado said Victory wants to keep production low to maintain quality.

“We want to satisfy the customer more than the industry,” Maldonado said. “We want happy customers, people that really like and enjoy their boats, that use their boats and love their boats, and have nothing to say bad about them.”

victory catamarans

Pugh plans to keep the VTX 34 Cat on the lift during the summer at their home on Mercer Island to go with the Donzi Sweet 16 that Matzke owns. The boat will go to warmer climates, such as Lake Havasu, Arizona, during the winter as they purchased a tilt trailer from MYCO .

“You know how short our boat seasoning is,” Matzke said. “It doesn’t freeze, it’s just miserable.”

Pugh, who built his first boat age 13, watched the industry moved from wood boats to fiberglass boat. Thanks to improving technology, the Victory catamaran is lighter, stronger and more efficient than catamarans built a decade ago.

“I’ve been able to enjoy and see how all the boats are built and I’ve enjoyed the technology,” Pugh said. “I’m more of a hands-on, what’s the guts of it like underneath. I’m not the fancy paint job guy.”

1995 Victory Catamaran

The Victory 35 is a cruising catamaran, designed to be fast, safe, comfortable, and fun to sail. Her designer is a cruising sailor and every detail of her lines, accommodations, deck layout and sail plan arises from years of sailing and cruising on catamarans. The huge cockpit has an table that easily seats five and a helms seat wide enough for two to sit together comfortably. The salon is open and airy, and a great place to relax or entertain.  There's a private office for tending to the details of daily living. A solid foredeck allows safe and secure handling of ground tackle and foresails. The Victory 35 is simple and fun to sail.

The Victory 35 was designed with liveaboard comtort in mind. A bright and airy main salon is luxurious with its hand-cratted joinery and louvered doors. There is 6' 4' headroom throughout, and continuous, bronze-tinted windows offer 180-degree panoramic views. The spacious interior features a large U-shaped galley with double sink, Norcold 12VDC / 110VAC refrigerator/freezer and two-burner stove. Forward are a settee, table and a comfortable chair that accommodates seven.   The "galley-up' layout in Victory places the galley on the same level as the main salon: no more is the cook removed from the action. To port, the large navigation station includes chart table.   Within the hulls are three roomy cabins with two queen-size aft berths and a double berth forward. Berths are oriented fore and aft, providing much greater comfort in a  rolling sea than berths laid out athwartships. The starboard hull features ample hanging lockers and a head (currently removed but plumbing still in place) with vanity and shower. The separate guest cabin to port includes a double berth, closet, and full head and shower. Seven opening deck hatches plus ten opening ports provide light and air below.

Yanmar 38 hp diesel fresh water cooled with heat exchanger Sonic catamaran drive w/15 inch 3 blade prop Standard power on the Victory 35 is a reliable, quiet, 38 hp Yanmar freshwater-cooled diesel mounted amidships under the cockpit away from the living quarters. The drive shatt extends vertically into the water.  No stuffing box or shaft seal is required. The shaft is steerable which along with her twin rudders makes the boat highly maneuverable in tight spaces. Fuel consumption is less than a half gallonper hour at 6 knots. The removable  cockpit sole provides easy, 360-degree access to the engine compartment.

A catamaran is inherentlv a verv stable boat. The Victory 35 has built-in buoyancy and watertight compartments, making her unsinkable. Double lifelines and wide side decks make her decks secure in rough weather, and her shoal draft lets her skim over thin water. The solid foredeck provides a stable, solid working platform - and also adds tremendous strength to her construction. Her jib, of course, has roller furling so there s no need to go forward for sail changes. The  Victory 35 is a strong, safe,easy-to-sall yacht, ideal tor sailors of every age and experience.

Victory 35's asymmetric, stepped hulls and high bridge deck clearance eliminate wave slamming and noise. Large aerodynamic rudders promote directional stability, keeping her on course while driving through seas. She has built-in chain and sail lockers, a modern anchoring system including bow rollers and chain locker, and built-in transom steps. Her 16-foot beam allows her unrestricted access to marina berths Victory's sailing abilities are no accident: her unique hull shape creates a fine water- line entrance, enabling her to point 38 degrees apparent. She'Il sail half of wind speed up to 15 knots, and downwind speeds in excess of 10 knots are commonplace Besides great speed, her easy tacking, 5 degree heeling, and gentle sea-going motion make her a total pleasure to sall.

The Victory 35 Catamaran was buit in Clearwater. Florida. She was designed by naval architect Bill Hepburn of Tradewinds Yacht Design to merge comtort and safetv with catamaran performance. State-of-the-art foam core. biaxial glass fabrics and vinvlester, vacuum-bagged resins give excellent strength-to-weight rations. Superior fit and finish result in a yacht that will look beautiful and hold its value tor a very long time. Wraparound, bronze-tinted salon window with panoramic view Ergonomic double helmsman's seat Contoured cockpit seating Cockpit lockers Bi-told Lexan companionway door Bow and stern pulpits Double litelines Rubrails Advanced, asymmetrical hull design Shoal draft Solid foredeck Large chain and sail lockers 7 opening, tinted hatches with screens 10 opening ports Engine access under cockpit sole Bullt-in transom steps and crossover walkwav Fold-down swim ladder

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

Giles Scott of Emirates Great Britain earned his first SailGP victory on Sunday, shortly after three-time defending champion Tom Slingsby and Team Australia capsized in a dramatic moment in the rainy, blustery inaugural ROCKWOOL Canadian Sail Grand Prix Halifax.

Scott, elevated to skipper after Sir Ben Ainslie stepped aside in January, beat France and Denmark in the first all-European podium race in the four seasons of tech billionaire Larry Ellison’s global league.

While Scott enjoyed his first Champagne shower as skipper, a frustrated Slingsby said a technical issue led to the capsize of his 50-foot foiling catamaran that might have cost the Aussies a spot in the podium race.

The Aussies were leading the fifth and final fleet race when the Flying Roo suddenly rolled over, with the tip of its wingsail — adorned with the outline of a yellow kangaroo — resting in the water. No sailors were injured, but Slingsby said he fell out of the cockpit and was able to hold on, and that strategist Natasha Bryant could have easily fallen.

“It was a pretty dangerous situation how quickly it happened but everyone’s safe,” said Slingsby, a gold medalist and former America’s Cup winner. “We’ve got to just be thankful for that and try to get the boat working and we’ve got two events to try to pull back in.”

The Aussies almost capsized in the fourth fleet race, heeling over dangerously before getting the cat under control.

It was just the second time in SailGP history that a team from Down Under wasn’t in the podium race.

It was a huge victory for Scott, a two-time Olympic gold medalist who became skipper when Ainslie stepped aside on Jan. 4, mostly to focus on the America’s Cup later this year. Ainslie, the most decorated Olympic sailor in history with four golds and a silver, remains CEO and majority owner of the British SailGP team. Scott is on Ainslie’s America’s Cup team, INEOS Britannia.

Scott had a remarkably consistent weekend, going 3-5-2-3-2 in the fleet races before dominating the podium race in rain and gusting wind. Britain reached the podium race for the first time since Ainslie skippered it to consecutive regatta wins in September.

“Buzzing. Absolutely buzzing,” Scott said. “Awesome day. Just feel very fortunate to have an amazing crew to sail with. We nailed it this weekend. Really stoked.”

Scott’s crew includes strategist Hannah Mills, the most-decorated female Olympic sailor with two golds and a silver.

The British are sixth in the season standings, 13 points out of podium position with two regattas to go before the $2 million, winner-take-all Grand Final among the top three boats on July 14 in San Francisco.

New Zealand, led by reigning two-time America’s Cup champion helmsman Peter Burling, continues to lead the season standings. Diego Botin of Spain jumped into second place overall, 11 points behind the Kiwis and one point ahead of the Aussies, who are six points clear of France.

Spain finished fourth, the Kiwis fifth and the Aussies seventh in Halifax.

Slingsby said the Aussies had an issue in the fourth race with the button that inverts the wingsail.

“We didn’t know what happened and we sort of scrambled our way out of it, managed to not capsize,” he said.

“The button was working for the rest of the race. We go into race 2, we think there’s no issue. We had a bad start but foiled away and got to a nice lead and just going upwind, no one touching the button, and the wing inverted and into a capsize.”

Slingsby said the boat’s electronics got wet and the shore crew was having a hard time getting the foils up to crane it out of the water.

“It’s turned into a bit of a major,” he said.

Due to high winds that limited the ability to safely crane all 10 catamarans into the water, Switzerland and the United States weren’t able to race Sunday. The shore crew craned boats into the water based on the standings from Saturday.

Bernie Wilson has covered sailing for the AP since 1991.

NJ Indian Americans react to Prime Minister Modi's surprisingly close election victory

6-minute read.

victory catamarans

They stood in long lines in India's acute heat wave. In rural areas, they came on foot or took buses; some took boats to be rowed across rivers to polling booths. By hand, they escorted their seniors to cast votes in a crucial national election that has sent the world a stunning message.

India's ruling BJP party, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, lost the parliamentary majority it enjoyed for two consecutive five year terms — a dominant position the party said would only improve, until Tuesday's results revealed a diluted victory. Polls closed June 1 in the mammoth seven-week long election.

In New Jersey, where Indians make up the largest Asian group according to the 2020 census, concentrated in Edison and Jersey City, the election results have left some of Modi's most dedicated supporters confused and disappointed.

Story continues below photo gallery

Meanwhile his many critics in the diaspora called the results a sign of comeuppance for Modi, who rose on a platform of Hindu majoritarianism and right-wing policies that critics argued have targeted religious minorities.

Results from the elections in India's billion-strong democracy disproved exit polls and sent stock prices tumbling.

Incumbent Modi is leading, but his party — after predicting it would win a 400-seat majority in India's 543-seat Lok Sabha, the lower house of parliament — will likely have to cobble together a coalition to govern.

Edison-based Indian restauranteur Neil Shah announced free "methi gotas" — a popular vegetarian snack from his and Modi's home state of Gujarat — if he won. But at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, the free food and celebration were postponed, Shah said, until Modi is declared prime minister.

Shah said he was "nervous" about the elections' outcome and did not comment on the BJP's politics, but said he admired Modi for putting India on the global stage as a nation to reckon with.

Some Indian Americans in NJ pleased at results

Pradip Kothari, another businessman also from Modi's home state of Gujarat, was pleased at the results. "The BJP losing its majority is good news for anyone who believes in secular democracies," he said.

Kothari, a 40-year New Jersey resident, runs a travel business in Edison. He is also president of the New Jersey chapter of the Overseas Indian Congress, the diasporic imprint of India's once-powerful and largest opposition party, the Indian National Congress.

"How can anyone who came to this country for its wonderful opportunities, and benefited from the protections and rights it gives its minorities, also support Modi?" Kothari said, referring to the strong following Modi has in many Indian expatriate communities. "Indians coming into the U.S should be broad-minded enough to support minorities back home," he said.

Minhaj Khan, another New Jersey resident and former president of the Indian American Muslim Council, was more blunt. "Narendra Modi’s electoral victory rests on rampant corruption and virulent Islamophobia, " Khan said. "The prime minister’s horrifying anti-Muslim campaign speeches are not only extremely dangerous, but also illegal according to India’s own laws."

Modi has avoided discussing unemployment and critical livelihood concerns and came under media scrutiny after referring to Muslims, who have lived in India for centuries, as "infiltrators" in recent campaign speeches.

"Modi’s victory emboldens Hindu nationalist groups in the U.S.," Khan said. "Nonetheless, there are reasons for hope. Modi’s political party was not able to mobilize voters.

"The opposition is more organized and energized than it has been in years," he said. "More and more Americans are also bravely speaking out against his regime’s persecution of Muslims, Christians, and its critics. It will be up to all of us to continue to stand up for human rights and democracy in India."

Modi propelled by Hindu base in northern states

Modi's win is no surprise. Propelled by his Hindu vote base in the highly populous northern states, the charismatic prime minister won hearts by stoking pride among India's Hindus, its largest religious group, but also by scapegoating its huge Muslim minority.

The son of a tea-seller who worked his way up in politics after starting out in the RSS, a militant right-wing religious outfit, Modi projects India's potential as an economic and tech giant to its booming middle class, with a seat in global politics.

That was a fresh change from India's long-standing ruling party, the Indian National Congress, whose British-educated leader Jawaharlal Nehru laid the foundation for its fledgling democracy in 1947, with safeguards for its millions of minority groups.

Nehru became the nation's first prime minister after independence; his daughter Indira Gandhi and son Rajiv followed as prime ministers; both were assassinated. Modi's common-man appeal and focus on reshaping India to fit a Hindu identity energized Indians who were tired of dynastic politics that many said wanted only to appease minorities.

Modi's tactics have divided voters

If Modi forms a government, he will become only the second prime minister to serve three consecutive terms. But losing the majority is viewed by his critics as a sign that rising economic inequality, cost of living, alienation of farmers, the rural poor and unemployment could no longer compete with his plans for a shining, "developed India."

His government's often blatant targeting of Muslim citizens in the heart of India's north, and its crackdown on the country's vibrant press, have divided voters. Tax raids on BBC offices followed the release of a damning documentary on a pogrom against Muslims that occurred under Modi's watch when he was chief minister of his home state of Gujarat.

Journalists, political activists and even political rivals have been jailed in recent years, marking a rupture in India's secular framework and free speech rights.

"We were fighting to save our constitution," Rahul Gandhi, scion of the Nehru-Gandhi dynasty and the face of the country's political opposition, said at a June 4 press conference. The Indian National Congress's "INDIA Alliance" coalition with other political groups held a united front against Modi's BJP — a move that election watchers said helped cement their role as a reliable counter to Modi.

Gandhi praised the election results as a sign of their success. "India has unanimously and clearly stated, we do not want Narendra Modi...to run this country," he said at the press conference.

Some BJP politicians have indicated wanting to dismantle "reservation" policies, which are baked into the constitution to protect minorities, tribal and indigenous communities and are akin to affirmative action in the U.S. Home minister Amit Shah denied this in a television interview, accusing Gandhi of misleading voters.

Critics viewed the BJP's campaign slogan, "400-paar," meaning more than 400 seats, as signaling a plan to win the two thirds majority needed to amend the constitution. Gandhi and other members of the opposition decried this, calling it a move towards autocratic rule.

"The poorest people of India, the farmers, the laborers have done the work of saving the constitution...while others have remained silent," Gandhi said, thanking them for casting their votes.

Caste rivalries

In India's caste-dominated social structure, most notable in rural areas, support for Modi and the ruling BJP was weak among low-income Dalits in the north's Hindi heartland. Dalits belong to the pejorative "lower" castes but are also Hindus. The BJP's critics say the party has also fueled caste-rivalries, resulting in election losses among the Jat Hindus of the northern state of Haryana, near India's capital, New Delhi.

"Today is an auspicious day...a sacred day" Modi said in his speech to supporters. His alliance was "ready to form a government... and their victory was a victory for the world's largest democracy," he said, after invoking a Hindu deity.

However, despite his comments, at 240 seats won, the BJP is nowhere close to the majority it needs to govern alone. The main opposition Indian National Congress won 99 seats, but its total tally will include wins by parties allied with it. A simple majority would be 272 seats.

"This is your first and greatest step" in the direction of a developed India, Modi told the crowds.

In another upset, Rahul Gandhi, long mocked as a child of the elite, won by huge margins in two constituencies. His margins were much larger even than Modi's. But the biggest humiliation came from the BJP's loss in Ayodhya, the site of a grand temple built over a razed mosque and inaugurated over days, and seen as the party's trump card to winning the election.

The BJP's politicians regularly stoke anti-Muslim sentiment in their speeches, but a single election rally speech by Modi raised that rhetoric to a level that shocked many, coming from the nation's commander-in-chief. If the opposition Indian National Congress came into power, it might even claim the jewelry of Hindu "mothers and wives," Modi said, addressing a rally in Rajasthan, in the northwest of India. He was allegedly alluding to a wealth redistribution proposal in the Congress manifesto.

FB Marine Group Showcases Victory 34 Cat No. 4

Outboard engine-powered catamarans claimed center stage—at least by the participation numbers—during the Offshore At The Ozarks-Cat Edition races in Central Missouri last Friday and Saturday. And that created the perfect opportunity for FB Marine group ’s Randy Sweers to showcase a 34-foot Victory model. Victory pleasure cat hull No. 4 in the United States, the boat is owned Brock Vernon, a Texas-based friend and client of Sweers, whose multi-location business is headquartered in South Florida.

It was the first time the vibrant green, carbon-fiber 34-footer powered by twin Mercury Racing 450R outboards had tackled the Lake of the Ozarks.

FB Marine Group’s Randy Sweers stayed busy with demo rides in his friend Brock Vernon’s 34-foot Victory catamaran on the Lake of the Ozarks last weekend. Photos by Pete Boden copyright Shoot 2 Thrill Pix .

“I was fortunate to have a chance last weekend to take a few people for a ride in some of the bumpy waters that are notorious at Lake of the Ozarks, and everyone who rode in the boat just could not believe how it handled the rough water for a boat its size,” he said. “The lines on the 34 are stunning and the fit and finish is amazing, but what’s best about this boat is how it runs.

“I had taken my good friend Nate Michel for a ride in the boat, and he’d recently had the opportunity to run some of our competitors’ products,” he continued. “He was just amazed at how the boat ran. It really does run like a much bigger boat.”

The Victory cat impressed several boaters during demo rides on Lake of the Ozarks, according to Sweers.

Sweers and company are putting the final touches on another 34-foot Victory model, which is dressed elegant Nardo Gray hues and powered by Mercury Racing 450R outboard engines. They plan to get the new catamaran on the water later this week.

“People ask me what I like best about the boat and I just tell them that it’s a ‘happy boat,’” Sweers said. “From great fuel economy to strong acceleration and top speed, the 450Rs are a great package on this cat. In everyday boating, we are able to run the boat with five people and plenty of fuel at 125 mph with no problem whatsoever, and cruise at 100 mph while getting two miles per gallon.”

The weekend trip to Missouri delivered an added benefit for Sweers—beating the South Florida heat. The Lake of the Ozarks area stayed in the low-to-mid 60s throughout the weekend.

“Being from Florida, we love cooler temperatures,” he said. “It was great to get out on the lake and do some boating, watch some good racing and hang out with some great friends.”

This was the scene along a section of Omaha Beach in June 1944, during Operation Overlord, the code name for the Allied invasion at the Normandy coast in France during World War II. The D-Day invasion that helped change the course of World War II was unprecedented in scale and audacity; tomorrow, veterans and world dignitaries will commemorate the 80th anniversary of the operation. In a column written for The Conversation and republished here, historian Joseph Harris Carpenter recounts what it was like for the storied 16th Infantry Regiment as it gained a foothold on Omaha Beach despite tremendous loss of life. ARLINGTON, Texas -- Among the many Allied military units storming the Normandy coast on June 6, 1944 -- 80 years ago tomorrow -- was the 16th Infantry Regiment of the U.S. Army’s 1st Infantry Division. Its members faced a particularly daunting task: As part of the first wave of the largest amphibious assault in history, the regiment was assigned to clear the Omaha Beach landing sectors code-named “Easy Red” and “Fox Green.”

This was no ordinary assault. Omaha would become the most deadly of the five D-Day landing beaches, as the United States, United Kingdom and allied nations attacked Nazi-occupied France in World War II. The liberation of Europe hung in the balance.

As the regiment’s members sat down to a steak dinner the night before the invasion, they no doubt thought about the legacy of their unit. As a military and oral historian, I researched this particular regiment’s service in Vietnam and became fascinated by its earlier history as well.

The 16th Infantry had fought in the Indian Wars, chased Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa, fought in the Battle of San Juan Hill that made Theodore Roosevelt a national hero, and saluted Revolutionary War commander Marquis de Lafayette at his tomb in Paris as the United States entered World War I. By D-Day, the regiment had already participated in the World War II invasions of North Africa and Italy in 1942 and 1943.

The regiment was so well thought of by the American public that when author F. Scott Fitzgerald created his infamous antihero Jay Gatsby in 1925′s “The Great Gatsby,” the title character was described as a veteran of the 16th Infantry .

That steak dinner the night before D-Day, recalled Charles Hangsterfer , then a captain in the 16th Regiment, was “just like they would give a convicted murderer his last meal on the evening of his execution.”

A dangerous attack: The invasion plan had called for heavy bombardment from warships and airplanes to weaken the German defenses, and for amphibious tanks – which could travel through shallow water and on land – to support the infantry as they hit the beaches.

But as dawn broke on June 6, 1944, bad weather intervened. Low clouds meant the bombardments largely missed their targets. Rough seas – swells between three and six feet, and 25-mph winds – swamped most of the tanks.

The troops themselves were seasick from the pitching and rolling of the small boats they were using to get to the beaches from larger ships offshore, and learned upon landing that their arrival was later than expected, and often far from its intended destination.

Ted Lombarski, a sergeant in the 16th’s F Company, recalled :

“We were the first wave to hit the beach, Companies E and F of the 16th Infantry. Almost all the tanks that had gone in before us were sunk. The tank crews had a rough time, and so did the navy personnel who drove us in. … As we went in, we knew that the air force had dropped their bombs too far inland and that the navy shelling had done likewise. The first wave went through hell that day.”

As they approached Omaha Beach, the men of the 16th Infantry Regiment were met with a wall of enemy fire. The bullets and shrapnel made the ocean appear to be boiling, according to an oral history of the regiment.

The landing craft didn’t go as far toward the shore as the soldiers had hoped, Capt. Everett Booth recalled:

“They didn’t get us very close to the beach, I’ll tell you. … We ran off into water about chest high. We were met with machine-gun bullets hitting all over the water. … The enemy was riddling the beach with machine-gun fire.”

And Lombarski recounted:

“Being in that first wave was like committing suicide. If you exposed yourself, you were dead.”

Burdened with weapons, ammunition, equipment and heavy packs, many soldiers were overcome by the sea and drowned. Those who made it to the beach found themselves up against the 352nd Infantry Division of the Nazi army, a unit with significant combat experience against the Soviets in Eastern Europe.

Heavy casualties: Despite the heavy losses and powerful German defense, as the day wore on it became clear that the 16th Infantry Regiment had secured a foothold on Omaha Beach. The soldiers fought through concrete and wooden obstacles the Nazis had placed on the beach, destroyed machine-gun emplacements and cleared enemy troops from key locations one by one.

There was no shortage of heroes that day – there were almost too many to count. Two of the four Congressional Medals of Honor awarded for actions on June 6 went to men of the 16th. At the beginning of the morning, 1st Lt. Jimmie Montieth exposed himself to enemy fire numerous times, including leading tanks through a minefield. He led his troops off the beach, organizing the various companies to hold the enemy positions gained by the 16th. Just hours later, he was killed in a German counterattack.

In a 1994 file photo, the late Edward R. Schmitt, D-Day veteran, poses with the many medals he earned while fighting with the 16th Infantry. Schmitt, of Parma, died in 2003 at age 87.

Edward R. Schmitt celebrated his 28th birthday June 6, 1944, by landing on Omaha Beach during the D-Day invasion of Normandy and thought it might be his last. In 1994, Schmitt, of Parma, who died in 2003 at age 87, recalled to a Plain Dealer reporter being soaked to the skin as he emerged from the blood-red surf to hug a rocky incline of beach. In this 1994 file photo, the former West Side beer brewer turned Army gunner poses with some of the many medals he earned during 4 1/2 years with the 16th infantry Regiment in the Middle East and Europe during World War II. Among his awards were the Silver Star and eight bronze stars. Chris Stephens, The Plain Dealer, File

Technician 5th Class John Pinder Jr., though wounded multiple times, made several trips into the fire-riddled surf to collect communications equipment. He helped establish radio contact with his commanders offshore before succumbing to his wounds.

They were among the nearly 1,000 casualties of the 16th Infantry killed, wounded or missing on D-Day. Despite these heavy losses – roughly one-third of the unit’s troops – the regiment’s relentless assault began to break through the German defenses, allowing the follow-up forces to push farther and farther inland. Victory was not guaranteed, but it was at hand.

Their courage and sacrifice were honored in a July 2, 1944, ceremony at a chateau 15 miles inland from the beach. The regiment had earned a Presidential Unit Citation for its role in the invasion. During the presentation, Allied commander Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower told the regiment:

“I’m not going to make a long speech, but this simple little ceremony gives me an opportunity to come over here and, through you, say thanks. You are one of the finest regiments in our army. I know your record from the day you landed in North Africa and through Sicily. I am beginning to think that your regiment is a sort of Praetorian Guard, which goes along with me and gives me luck.”

How AP covered the D-Day landings and lost photographer Bede Irvin in the battle for Normandy

On D-Day, The Associated Press had reporters, artists and photographers in the air, on the choppy waters of the English Channel, in London, and at English departure ports and airfields covering the Allied assault in Normandy

NEW YORK — When Associated Press correspondent Don Whitehead arrived with other journalists in southern England to cover the Allies’ imminent D-Day invasion of Normandy, a U.S. commander offered them a no-nonsense welcome.

“We’ll do everything we can to help you get your stories and to take care of you. If you’re wounded, we’ll put you in a hospital. If you’re killed, we’ll bury you. So don’t worry about anything,” said Maj. Gen. Clarence R. Heubner of the U.S. Army 1st Infantry Division.

It was early June 1944 — just before the long-anticipated Normandy landings that ultimately liberated France from Nazi occupation and helped precipitate Nazi Germany’s surrender 11 months later.

On D-Day morning, June 6, 1944, AP had reporters, artists and photographers in the air, on the choppy waters of the English Channel, in London, and at English departure ports and airfields. Veteran war correspondent Wes Gallagher — who would later run the entire Associated Press — directed AP’s team from the headquarters in Portsmouth, England, of Supreme Allied Commander Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower.

The greatest armada ever assembled — nearly 7,000 ships and boats, supported by more than 11,000 planes — carried almost 133,000 troops across the Channel to establish toeholds on five heavily defended beaches; they were code-named Utah, Omaha, Gold, Juno and Sword and stretched across 80 kilometers (50 miles) of Normandy coast. More than 9,000 Allied soldiers were killed or wounded in the first 24 hours.

Having heard on German radio that the landings had begun, Gallagher hurried to the British Ministry of Information to await the official communique. It came just before 9 a.m. with this brief instruction: “Gentlemen, you have exactly 33 minutes to prepare your dispatches.”

At precisely 9:32 a.m., the doors opened and the journalists poured out to release their reports. Gallagher’s FLASH appeared via teletype in the New York headquarters of AP just one minute later.

LONDON—EISENHOWERS HEADQUARTERS ANNOUNCES ALLIES LAND IN FRANCE.

The 1,300-word story that followed began: “Allied troops landed on the Normandy coast of France in tremendous strength by cloudy daylight today and stormed several miles inland with tanks and infantry in the grand assault which Gen. Dwight D. Eisenhower called a crusade in which ‘we will accept nothing less than full victory.’”

As men on either side of him were killed, AP correspondent Roger Greene waded ashore on the eastern end of the landing front. Sheltering in a bomb crater, Greene pounded out the first AP report from the beachhead, with wind flicking sand into his typewriter keys and rattling the paper.

“Hitler’s Atlantic Wall cracked in the first hour under tempestuous Allied assault,” he wrote.

On Omaha, the deadliest invasion beach, AP’s Whitehead lost his bedroll and equipment and nearly his life as he landed with the 16th Regiment of the 1st Infantry Division.

“So many guys were getting killed that I stopped being afraid. I was resigned to being killed, too,” he later recalled.

He witnessed German heavy machine-gun fire, mortar and artillery rounds raking landing craft and pinning down U.S. soldiers, vehicles and supplies that “began to pile up on the beach at an alarming rate.”

Whitehead never forgot the calmness of Col. George A. Taylor urging troops onward by yelling: “Gentleman, we’re being killed on the beach. Let’s go inland and be killed.”

The Battle of Normandy was underway, with Allied forces pushing off the beaches and fighting their way inland in the following days and weeks. By June 30, the Allies had landed 850,000 soldiers, nearly 150,000 vehicles and more than half a million tons of supplies.

Casualties mounted on all sides and among French civilians. By the second half of August, with Paris being liberated, more than 225,000 Allied troops had been killed, wounded or were missing. On the German side, more than 240,000 had been killed or wounded and 200,000 captured.

The dead included 33-year-old AP photographer Bede Irvin, killed July 25 near the Normandy town of Saint Lo as he was photographing an Allied bombardment that went horribly wrong, with some of the bombers mistakenly dropping their payloads on their own forces.

As well as Irvin — hit by shrapnel as he was diving for the shelter of a roadside ditch — more than 100 American soldiers were killed and almost 500 others wounded, said Ben Brands, a historian with the American Battle Monuments Commission. It manages the the Normandy American Cemetery where Irvin is buried, overlooking Omaha Beach.

On Monday, colleagues from AP’s Paris bureau, covering the 80th anniversary of the landings, laid flowers at the foot of the white stone cross on his grave. Irvin’s is one of 9,387 graves in what was the first American cemetery in Europe of World War II, set up two days after D-Day.

In its September 1944 edition, AP’s in-house magazine said the native of Des Moines, Iowa, had until then survived some of the worst fighting in Normandy and “had only one complaint — that he was not seeing enough action.”

In a letter after his death to one of Irvin’s AP colleagues, his widow, Kathryne, poured out her sorrow. Muriel Rambert, an ABMC guide at the cemetery, read out an extract Monday at his grave, after she’d used sand from Omaha Beach to highlight Irvin’s name on his headstone and planted American and French flags in front of it.

“There are so many hopes and plans between a husband and wife,” she said, reading from the letter. “Plans that won’t for Bede and me ever come true.”
