Woodspring Model Sailing Club
We are a group of model boat enthusiasts who formed the Woodspring Model Sailing Club (Woodspring MSC) in 1974 to encourage the building and sailing of remote control model watercraft.
Our home water is Portishead boating lake, a good size man-made lake dating from the early 20th century being filled from a spring and the high spring tides giving a brackish water.
? Radio controlled sailing models have many attractions.? Whilst they are easy to learn how to sail, the variations in the wind and natural conditions mean that there is always some challenge and interest in sailing them.? They are of course silent and they can typically sail for many hours at a time because the batteries only operate the radio control, not a motor.? If you have not seen scale model sailing before then do come along to the lake and perhaps talk with our members about it. It is an extremely enjoyable and relaxing hobby and one that always attracts interest from the public.
The club?s calendar includes many Sunday morning sessions for scale sail, electric and steam models.? Members enjoy ?free sailing? although if enough members are present we can also set up a course with buoys to sail around.? Members are also free to meet and sail at other times and many retired members also sail their scale models during the week.

Community spirit is very much alive in Portishead, which is demonstrated by the exceptional number of events and activities that take place in the town. Most of these happen because volunteers within the community have made them happen. There is certainly no reason to be lonely in Portishead, even if you can’t get out of the house or you don’t have much free time, there are organisations in the town that will welcome your input, even if it’s just an hour or two per month.
One of the best examples of the town's community spirit is the Christmas Lights committee and volunteers. Ride through the town centre to see the Christmas Lights 2016 .
Our directory of clubs and organisations continues to grow, please use it to get in touch with groups that interest you; there should be something for everyone here.

Re: Bristol Channel Pilot Cutter Build - 'Eliza Rose'. The deck was now ready for planking, something that I did over the Christmas period of December 2009- January 2010. I used 1/16" thick limewood strips, 8mm wide, to represent planks of around 3.5" wide at full scale.
The model was built between 2008 and 2012 and has since clocked up about 60 hours of sailing at the Woodspring Model Sailing Club and also occasionally at the Cheddar Steam Club. I hope this account makes a good read while we are so restricted in where and when we can go sailing.
