Model Boat Club
Woodspring Model Sailing Club is a welcoming group of model yacht, boat and ship enthusiasts. The club was formed in 1974 to encourage the building and sailing of radio-controlled model watercraft. Home water for the club is the Portishead boating lake, filled from a freshwater spring and from the high spring tides, giving a brackish water. The lake supports a wide variety of wildlife, so the club prohibits thew use of boats powered by internal combustion engines.
Club night is Thursday during the summer months, until the beginning of October. Informal meetings take place during the winter months.

Woodspring Model Sailing Club Sailing model yachts and scale model boats in Portishead
50th anniversary open day.
This year, Woodspring Model Sailing Club, based at Portishead Lake Ground, celebrates 50 years since it was founded on 8th October 1974. To mark the occasion, the club held an Open Day on Saturday 21st September with displays of models, informal yacht racing on the lake and a barbeque. Many local model boat clubs from the West Country and South Wales came to join us, including Cwmbran Modelling Society, Gloucester & District Model Boat Club, Torbay Model Yacht Club and the model boat clubs from Sedgemoor, Shepton Mallet, Vale of Glamorgan and Warminster. Portishead Marine Lake is one of the best model yachting lakes in the West Country. We believe this was the largest model boat and yacht meeting at Portishead for many years, with over 30 models sailing at a time. The sun came out in the afternoon and the public was treated to large displays of models and regular yacht races on the lake. There were also many scale and novelty models including working miniature submarines and a family of meerkats on a catamaran! Club Commodore Bob Conner cut the birthday cake after the barbeque and thanked our many visitors for coming to help celebrate our anniversary.
