The Anatomy of a Yacht | Superyacht Terminology

Whether cruising with family and friends or enjoying an adventurous sailing trip, yachts can offer everything you need for the perfect holiday. Before stepping board, it can be useful to familarise yourself with the parts of a yacht to understand the language and terminology used by the crew onboard, and to appreciate how these impressive vessels work. From the keel to the sails, it's important to understand the anatomy of any vessel before setting out on a chartering journey.

The Parts of a Yacht - An Overview

Understanding the parts of a yacht not only improves your sailing experience but will also increase your appreciation of these powerful vessels. A standard yacht has several key parts, including a stern, hull, and bow. The stern, or aft, refers to the back the yacht, sometimes accompanied by a swim platform. On the other end of the vessel, the bow refers to the front of the yacht. The part of the yacht that floats in the water is referred to as the hull. Most traditional yachts have one hull, however catamarans are typically ‘multi-hull' having two points of contact with the sea.

Hulls – Materials and Design

As hulls are one of the largest components of a yacht, it is important that the design is intentional to withstand the elements on the ocean. The material that is it constructed of varies depending on the vessels size and intended use; it is common to see hulls made from wood, steel, or composite materials. Hulls play a crucial role is ensuring stability on board and a smooth journey as conditions on the ocean can vary.

Bridge & Bridge Deck

Port side & starboard side.

These terms refer to the left and right sides of a yacht; Port side refers to the left side, while starboard side is the right. A helpful tip is to remember the saying “there is a little bit of port left in the bottle.” This terminology is often used by crew in order to effectively communicate with their team in order to avoid accidents and safely navigate the seas, so you will likely hear these terms onboard your stay.

Yacht Main Salon and Swim Platform

There is plenty of fun to be had in these two areas of a yacht. The main salon refers to the main living room onboard and is a space where yacht designers can showcase their personality in the design. Often featuring plush seating, stylish decor and high-end entertaining systems, guests can comfortably enjoy downtime relaxing and socialising in this area. The swim platform is exactly what it sounds like; it offers a convenient way to jump in to cool off and enjoy the water. When you feel it’s time to take a dip, the swim platform is the perfect spot to soak up the sun, enjoy the available watertoys , dip your feet in the ocean, or take a refreshing dive or snorkel in the sea.

All of these elements are thoughtfully designed by experts across the world to construct the magnificent yachts that we know and love. We encourage you to experience our favourite vessels for yourself through luxury yacht hire to appreciate the impressive design and craftsmanship. How to Name a Boat: 6 Tips for Naming Your New Boat

how to name a boat

6 Tips for Naming Your Boat

1. keep your boat name brief .

While it's tempting to craft elaborate and descriptive names, keeping them concise and to the point is essential. A short name not only looks sleek on the transom but also ensures clarity and ease during VHF radio communications . Imagine trying to convey a long and convoluted name amidst crackling radio static – simplicity ensures your message gets across swiftly and clearly. So, when brainstorming boat names, aim for brevity without sacrificing personality or impact.

2. Consider Incorporating a Familiar Name

Incorporating your family's name or that of a loved one into your boat's name adds a personal touch to your vessel's identity.  Not only does it honor the bond shared with those closest to you, but it also symbolizes the unity and camaraderie experienced aboard your maritime adventures. Whether it's a nod to generations past or a tribute to those who've shared countless memories on the water, including a family member's name infuses your boat with a sense of history, legacy, and emotional connection that enriches every voyage.

3. Incorporate Your Profession or Another Hobby

Infusing your boat's name with elements of your profession or hobbies adds another layer of significance and personality. It's not uncommon to come across clever and thematic names like "Knot on Call" for a physician's vessel or "Doctor's Orders" for a boat owned by medical professionals. Incorporating your profession or hobby into the name not only reflects your expertise or interests but also serves as a conversation starter among fellow enthusiasts on the water.

4. Add a Witty Pun

When naming your boat, puns and double meanings reign supreme, injecting a dose of wit and humor into your vessel's identity.  Building upon the previous point, it's no surprise that attorneys often embrace wordplay to incorporate their profession into their boat's name. Names like "Alibi," "Plead Insanity," or "Knot Guilty" not only showcase their legal expertise but also highlight their playful side.  Embracing puns and wordplay allows you to infuse your boat's name with personality and charm, ensuring that it stands out on the water!

5. Pay Homage to Your Favorite Song, Movie, or Other Art You Love

Drawing inspiration from your favorite songs, movies , or other cultural works can yield some captivating boat names! Whether it's a homage to Jimmy Buffett's laid-back anthem with "Margaritaville" or a nod to the legendary ship from "Pirates of the Caribbean" with "The Black Pearl," infusing your boat's name with elements from beloved art adds a touch of flair and nostalgia to your maritime adventures.

6. When in Doubt, Make it Entertaining

Boating is not just about navigating the waters; it's about fostering a sense of community and shared joy. If a glance at your transom makes people laugh, you've just helped to make the boating world a better place.

Deciding How to Name Your New Boat

Consider the above as you decide what to name your boat, but also take your time! Many people feel pressured to come up with a name the day they buy their new boat when, in truth, it may take you a few months to determine the perfect name for your boat.

Some owners find that the perfect name emerges organically as they spend time on the water, getting to know the personality of their vessel. Others find inspiration in literature, mythology, or personal experiences. Don't rush the process; allow the name to reveal itself naturally, and when it does, you'll know it's the right fit.

How to Christen a Boat with its Name

Christening a boat is open to interpretation! However, most boat christening ceremonies consist of steps such as:

  • Gather some friends and family, then launch the boat and tie it to a pier or dock.
  • Pass around a celebratory drink: think champagne (for passengers over the age of 21) and mocktails (for the captain).
  • Place a green, leafy branch (of any sort) in the boat to represent a safe return to land.
  • Name the boat and make a toast to the adventures ahead.
  • Go for a boat ride!

In conclusion, naming your boat is not just a formality but an opportunity to infuse your vessel with personality, meaning, and a touch of your own unique flair. Whether you draw inspiration from family ties, professions, hobbies, favorite songs or movies, or simply opt for a clever pun, the key is to choose a name that resonates with you and captures the essence of your maritime adventures.

USVI Charter Yacht Show Set for November in St Thomas

Planning has already begun for the 2022 edition of the USVI Charter Yacht Show.

This year’s event will be set at IGY Marinas’ Yacht Haven Grande in St Thomas from Nov. 12-15.

“Build. Learn. Shine. Certify. These are the keywords that spotlight what is new at the 2022 USVI Charter Yacht Show,” says Oriel Blake, VIPCA’s Executive Director. “Charter brokers repeatedly emphasize the importance of not only meeting new crew but building relationships with crew of existing 2023 bookings, so we added several new networking opportunities. We also are hosting breakfast seminars with professionals and government officials for learning the latest news in the industry and a seminar especially for new crew too. The best yacht and best crew in show awards, the cocktail and culinary competitions which this year feature an escalated panel of judges, give opportunities for crews to really shine. And finally, training by Seven Seas Preparatory for Captains and Crews offers valuable tricks of the trade and a new ‘Charter Yacht Professional Excellence’ certification.”

This year’s event will have some new concepts, most notably the mid-show evening “yacht hop,” with a competition between clearinghouses for teamed crew-hosted broker entertainment onboard select yachts.

“Attendance at the VIPCA show is important for brokers that book this segment of the market as it’s a crucial way to stay up to date,” said said German Liubitch, Founder and Sales Director at RitzyCharters, headquartered in Miami, FL. “It’s equally important for yachts to show. Meeting with crews in person, seeing the layout and upkeep, and any changes to a yachts program helps brokers to better book the vessel.”

The Yacht Haven Grande Marina, which is hosting the event, has become one of the hottest yachting spots in the wider Caribbean, with a surge in interest in the US Virgin Islands amid the pandemic.

Much of that growth began with the entry of The Moorings to St Thomas, a move which helped kickstart a broader charter yacht movement in the USVI, particularly when the neighboring British Virgin Islands wasn’t exactly making things easy for boaters.

“We are pleased to support VIPCA’s USVI Charter Yacht Show, the destination, and all events that help to create a robust economy for the territory,” said Bert Fowles, IGY’s Vice President of Marketing and Sales. “The U.S. Virgin Islands is one of the greatest yachting destinations in the world.”

Early November 2020

Held on St Thomas in the Virgin Islands the Virgin Islands Professional Charter Association (VIPCA) is returning for another edition. This event is due to take place in the first week of November and is set to welcome over 50 charter yachts. The show is overseen by a body which represents the interests of charter yachts that sail to the US Virgin Islands and is an industry-only event.

Many charter brokers are planning to attend to see a small selection of motor yachts, mono hulls and catamarans. The vessels will all be on display in the IGY Yacht Haven Grande along with friendly captains and crew. VIPCA Charter Yacht Show, St Thomas, USVI, 11-14 November 2023

USVI Yacht Charter Show 2021

VIPCA Charter Yacht Show comes straight after the neighbouring BVI Charter Show. These days, this is a much bigger show, hosted in St Thomas, at the IGY Marina.

Catamaran Mahasattva at St Thomas - High Point Yachting

During the show, crewed yachts, mostly catamarans, open doors to the brokers and other industry members. We all spend few days visiting the yachts, talking to the crews, tasting chefs’ specialities, finding out how and why they might be the best charter option for our clients. We listen and learn about their experiences, we give suggestions, we take advices.

USVI Charter Yacht Show 2020 [Event Recap]

Charter broker, laura sharp attended the 4th annual vipca usvi charter yacht show in st. thomas, usvi. read her full event recap below..

The year 2020 has definitely been a weird one, with lots of uncertainties and unknowns due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The Caribbean is the most popular yachting destination among Americans and many of the Caribbean islands have had to close their doors to American tourists, as well as create and enforce strict guidelines on entering their borders.

Thankfully, The Virgin Islands Professional Charter Association ( VIPCA ) Charter Yacht Show was allowed to host their 4th annual show at the beautiful Yacht Haven Grande Marina in St. Thomas, USVI from November 12 to 15. This event has quickly become one of the largest shows in the Caribbean , and Denison Yachting was proud to be one of the sponsors of the USVI Charter Yacht Show.

vipca yacht show

Even with the global pandemic, there were close to 50 yachts in attendance, ranging from 44 feet to 92 feet — the majority of the yachts were sailing catamarans. Supplementary events still took place, such as a crew cocktail competition, crew culinary competition, and awards ceremony.

This, along with the (canceled) BVI Yacht Charter Show, is my favorite charter event as I specialize in the Caribbean cruising area, specifically in crewed catamaran charters. My 5 favorite yachts from this year’s show were the 2020 Leopard 50 named SOUTHERN CHARM , the 2020 Catana Bali 5.4 named AD ASTRA , the 2020 Fountaine Pajot Elba 45 named O.V ., the 2018 Lagoon 560 named RESPITE AT SEA , and the 2020 Privilege Series 6 named ALLURE .

These types of shows are really beneficial because but I get to experience the yacht as my client would — and having a first-hand experience makes me a better charter broker . My main priority is matching my client’s needs with the right boat and crew.

vipca yacht show

In regards to where the best charter destination will be for the 2021 season, my suggestion is the USVI . It’s a beautiful Caribbean escape consisting of 4 main islands with about 50 smaller cays and a territory making up 133 square miles. It’s an excellent cruising area because the islands are close together and the water temperature is consistently in the low 80s. Plus, there’s fantastic snorkeling, diving, hiking trails, historical ruins, private beaches, and shopping in the USVI.

In terms of travel, the USVI government has been diligent in keeping locals safe while welcoming tourists to the islands. COVID-19 procedures in the US territories are not overly strict. In order to enter the USVI, individuals must produce a negative molecular, PCR, or rapid test 5 days prior to arrival and comply with a temperature check once arrived at the airport. Anyone over the age of 5 must complete the travel screening portal.

The USVI is an easy flight from the continental United States, with many non-stop flights from New York, Boston, Philadelphia, Charlotte, Atlanta, Fort Lauderdale, and Miami. Traveling to the Caribbean is not an all-day event, especially now that Denison partnered with Tropic Ocean Airways to offer charter guests a safe option to arrive at their yacht or destination.

vipca yacht show

While this year’s USVI charter show looked a little different, it was still a great opportunity to see and learn about the best yachts for charter in the Caribbean. Yacht charter is one of the safest options for luxury travel because it’s an easily controlled environment. Contact your charter broker to book your next socially distanced vacation.

Great Success for the USVI VIPCA Charter Yacht Show 2021

The main event in the US Virgin Islands for charter brokers and crewed yachts has just taken place generating, as usual, great international interest.

Now in its fifth year, the USVI Charter Yacht Show has grown to be an exceptional opportunity for charter brokers to see an impressive charter yachts display, and as a result, for these vessels and their crews to get noticed by a conspicuous group of international sector experts, showing the qualities of their boats and the skills of each member of the team.

The exclusive event attracted a large number of charter brokers, ready to evaluate catamarans, monohulls, and a small but important selection of motor yachts, all neatly displayed in one of the most exclusive locations of the US Virgin Islands together with their captains and crews.

yacht-charter-show-usvi-vipca

Where and when did the VIPCA 2021’s edition take place?

Held in St Thomas in the Virgin Islands at the IGY (Island Global Yachting) Yacht Haven Grande in Charlotte Amalie from 7 to 10 November, once again this year the number of participants, coming from both the United States and Europe, has grown and was happy to attend the event.

It is in fact easy to reach St. Thomas with direct flights from major US international gateway cities such as New York, Miami , or Fort Lauderdale .

vipca-charter-show-2021

An exclusive location in a unique context.

The success of this type of event is not surprising. The USVI are playing an increasingly important role in the Caribbean charter landscape, so much so that they have been named by the Caribbean Journal the “hottest nautical destination in the Caribbean “.

The success of the event is also due to its location. Last October, IGY’s Yacht Haven Grande St. Thomas Marina was named Superyacht Marina of the Year for the third time since 2016 by the prestigious UK-based The Yacht Harbor Association.

charter-show-vipca

Who organized the VIPCA event?

As usual, the show was supervised by the nonprofit organization Virgin Islands Professional Charter Association ( VIPCA ), born only recently but which has already achieved important results in the local nautical sector, representing the interests of charter yachts sailing to the American Virgin Islands.

VIPCA was in fact born as a non-profit maritime association whose purpose is to promote, protect the activities of yacht charter and the maritime activities that are members and that support it, carrying out projects and initiatives, providing information, technical advice, resources, and finally improving the customs and border protection structures, facilitating access.

As we said, the association also plans to contribute to the economy of the Virgin Islands stabilizing the maritime industry. VIPCA membership is possible for professional crew members, marine-related businesses, ships, and local businesses.

As a charter broker who constantly works with boats from the US Virgin Islands and organizes itineraries in these islands for clients from all over the world, Your Boat Holiday is proud to have the title of VIPCA member .

Not just a boat exhibition the USVI Charter Yacht Show was not just a great exhibition of charter boats. During the four days of the exhibition, social events took places such as daytime screenings, lunches, and various kinds of competitions.

The most popular were the culinary competition reserved for onboard chefs, where the participants juggled preparing a complete menu using at least two local ingredients for each course, and the cocktail competition.

2021-vipca-fall-charter-show-2021

Why participate in this Charter Yacht Show?

Regardless of whether you are interested in the nautical industry or not, the VIPCA show is an excellent opportunity to plan a visit to the American virgin islands

These in fact guarantee a beautiful Caribbean escape consisting of 4 main islands with about 50 smaller islets and a territory of 133 square miles. This is an excellent cruise area because the islands are close together and the water temperature is constantly around 80 degrees Fahrenheit.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

May 3rd 2023

VIPCA to Launch 1 st  Virgin Islands Boating Exposition

May 10-12, 2024, at Yacht Haven Grande Marina St. Thomas

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands. The inaugural Virgin Islands Boating Exhibition (VIBE) will take place May 10-12, 2024, at IGY’s Yacht Haven Grande Marina St. Thomas. This highly anticipated event will showcase cutting-edge sail and power yachts, conveniently located within a demo-drive distance of the world’s best cruising grounds. VIBE is organized by the Virgin Islands Professional Charter Association (VIPCA), which works year-round to support the territory’s annual $90 million charter industry, and is renowned for its successful USVI Charter Yacht Show.  VIBE’s 2.0 style show is curated based on feedback from industry stakeholders, including dealers, manufacturers, charter companies, and vendors, to ensure a bespoke experience that addresses their needs. With a focus on luxury, intimacy, and a boutique-style show, set against the backdrop of St. Thomas, named the Hottest Yachting Destination in the Caribbean in 2021, VIBE promises to be a must-attend event for yachting enthusiasts.

vipca yacht show

U.S. Virgin Islands Governor Albert Bryan  Jr., comments: “The U.S. Virgin Islands enjoys a vibrant marine tourism sector and is eager to build on this with the first Virgin Islands Boating Exhibition. To that end, VIPCA has hired Boat Show Consultant Kevin Murphy, former Strictly Sail Shows Manager for the National Marine Manufacturers Association. Murphy has a proven track record of bringing together exhibitors, sponsors, and attendees at boat shows throughout the U.S. Our territory offers benefits such as EDC (Economic Development Commission) incentives, a strong financial infrastructure, and reliable airlift and marine repair services to support the boating industry. We take pride in providing an environment that fosters business growth and development, and we welcome all those interested in investing in our thriving maritime economy.”

Murphy adds: “I’m excited to collaborate with VIPCA to launch a show at one of the world’s top super yacht marinas in the beautiful U.S. Virgin Islands, an unparalleled cruising destination. When given the opportunity to showcase the best in boating, it’s impossible to refuse, and I’m confident that this show will be a resounding success.”

Boutique Destination Yacht Show

St. Thomas, U.S. Virgin Islands, offers the perfect setting for yacht sales, providing exhibitors and attendees with everything they need while avoiding the crowds of a national boat show. As a U.S. territory, U.S. citizens can enter without a passport, and there are direct flights from major U.S. gateway cities, such as Boston, New York, Miami, Atlanta, Dulles, and Chicago, on carriers like American, Delta, JetBlue, Spirit, and United. Just a 15-minute drive from the airport, IGY’s Yacht Haven Grande Marina St. Thomas is the perfect venue. Recognized as Superyacht Marina of the Year four times since 2016 by the prestigious UK-headquartered The Yacht Harbour Association, this venue offers first-class dockage facilities, as well as chic waterfront restaurants and shops in a park-like setting.

vipca yacht show

VIBE’s venue provides a genuine Caribbean charter destination experience, where attendees can demo exhibiting yachts while meeting charter business industry professionals in their base of operation in America’s Paradise. The Charlotte Amalie Harbor, where the marina is located, is also a hub for regularly scheduled yacht transport ships delivering vessels from North America and Europe, making it possible for VIBE attendees to see new hulls straight from the factory.

In addition to the prime location, the VIP visitor experience in the U.S. Virgin Islands is exceptional, with first-class dining, accommodations, shopping, land and water sports, and entertainment. The territory has seen a remarkable 22 percent increase in airline ticket booking data in March 2023, compared to the same time in 2019, making it the top destination in the Caribbean, according to a report from the Caribbean Hotel and Tourism Association, headquartered in Fort Lauderdale, FL.

U.S. Virgin Islands Commissioner of Tourism, Joseph Boschulte, comments:  “Welcome to all yacht dealers, manufacturers, exhibitors, local and global vendors, and attendees to our award-winning destination in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Here, you can not only buy your new yacht but also enjoy the full tourism experience on land and sea. Our destination has been recognized with recent awards, underscoring our commitment to providing a world-class experience for all visitors. We are thrilled to have you here and look forward to showcasing the best of what our destination has to offer.”

Business- & Boating-Friendly USVI

The U.S. Virgin Islands offers a business-friendly environment for buying and selling yachts, thanks to its use of the U.S. dollar, U.S. banking institutions, and exclusive tax incentives. With no sales tax and duty-free allowances for vendors, the territory provides favorable conditions for conducting yacht transactions. Additionally, the well-established and highly successful charter industry in the USVI presents opportunities to speak directly with local company representatives about purchasing a vessel for income-producing crewed charters.
