The Yacht Week, a unique ‘floating festival’ that takes place across some of Croatia’s most breathtaking sailing routes throughout the summer, has announced phase one of the line-up for their 2019 edition.

Appearing on ‘The Buzz Boat’; a floating DJ stage, fully kitted out with a VOID Acoustic soundsystem, are Weiss, Illyus & Barrientos, Mark Knight, and Offaiah, with more major announcements to come.

The Buzz Boat is an unforgettable centrepiece, but in conjunction with some of Croatia’s best venues and clubs, The Yacht Week experience is full of big nights and big DJs, alongside more underground events supporting up and coming DJ talent, all designed to test the endurance of the most committed clubbers. The Croatia Ultra Festival Route even includes tickets to Ultra Festival for the ultimate blow out. When it’s time to recover, nothing comes close to The Yacht Week; guests can snorkel in secluded bays, try some seaside yoga, kick back at a beach lounge and enjoy freshly prepared lunch or dinner, and much more, before the night brings another dancefloor.

Weiss was the breakout house music star of 2018, thanks to the phenomenal success of his track ‘Feel My Needs’. The sunset groover with luscious old school piano riffs brought him mainstream attention, but this British DJ / producer has already proved his credentials many times over with huge releases on Dirtybird, Toolroom, This Ain’t Bristol and more. Now heavily in demand at the world’s best clubs and festivals, Weiss is sure to bring the perfect vibes for The Yacht Week crowds during week 26 (22nd June to 29th June).

Also preparing to board The Buzz Boat for week 27 (29th June to 6th July) are Illyus & Barrientos, the Glaswegian pairing currently tearing up dancefloors with their raw, jackin’ cut, ‘Shout’, on Toolroom Records, a track which perfectly sums up their energetic, deep, and percussive approach to house music. With releases on Suara, Exploited Records, Glasgow Underground and many more, Illyus & Barrientos have a well-deserved reputation as one of the hottest DJ / production duos in the UK.

There’s very little Mark Knight hasn’t achieved in the world of electronic music. The Toolroom Records boss is one of the most revered DJ / producers out there. His influence has shaped the sound of house music over two decades and provided him with a Grammy nomination, Toolroom Radio (broadcasting to millions), huge record sales, sold out Ibiza seasons, sold out world tours, and much more. Mark Knight taking over the VOID Acoustics soundsystem out on the waves will be an unforgettable experience. He appears during week 30 (20th July to 27th July).

Also, announced today is Offaiah, performing during week 31 (27th July to 2nd August). This Londoner has been steadily building a reputation for quality, bumping house music full of hooks you can’t shake off and perfectly crafted drops for the dancefloor. Since smashing his way into clubland consciousness in 2017 with his breakout hit, the gospel-tinged, ‘Trouble’, Offaiah has been busy; releasing tracks on Defected, arguably the most credible and established name in house music, kicking off his new label All Fire Records, and most recently, remixing Deadmau5’s new single ‘Hurricane’. Hugely talented and heavily in demand: The Yacht Week is in for a treat.

Following a headline set from Claptone last year, this is a statement of intent from The Yacht Week and puts quality, credible music at the core of its offering. Only The Yacht Week gathers a flotilla of adventurous party people at sea, to experience massive, headline DJ sets against the stunning backdrop of the Croatian coastline. What Is Yacht Week?

The Yacht Week is a famous seven-day festival hosted every year in six different locations, with Croatia being one. In brief, the festival is nothing less than a full-fledged water adventure. It includes a vast selection of activities organized by The Yacht Week. One of the rules of the Yacht Week is to have an equal number of participants, both male and female, who have earned their way into the yacht. The occurrences at Yacht Week remain a mystery as one would get on board having absolutely no idea as to how the next seven days would be beside the standard understanding of the festival. This limited knowledge regarding the itinerary and schedules is what makes the festival all the more exciting.

Where to Book for Yacht Week in Croatia?

You either have an option to book a full yacht (can accommodate a group size of 6-12 people) or a cabin (for two people) on one of the yachts.

Good experiences don't come cheap, right?

Hiring a skipper

Skippers are yacht professionals certified in the sport. They maintain the safety and security of the audience and ensure their excitement meets the perfect experience. These licensed sailors who would be onboard with the crew, also teach those who are willing to learn the art of yachting.

Skipper hiring is an easy process; it would require a couple of online methods. But what is difficult is pinning down the right skipper for you, regarding experience, certification and hospitality. Here are some of the websites through which you could get in touch with your personal skipper:

Accommodation

The yachts are well-equipped with multiple cabins, allowing you and your crew to have your own private sleeping quarters. The cabins are cozy and designed to maximize space, with comfortable beds and storage options for your belongings. Each cabin typically accommodates two people, making it easy to allocate sleeping arrangements among your crew.

Common areas on the yacht include a spacious salon where you can gather and relax, a fully equipped kitchenette to prepare meals, and dining areas both indoors and outdoors. The yachts also feature bathroom facilities, including showers and toilets, ensuring convenience throughout your trip.

It’s important to note that the yachts provided during The Yacht Week Croatia are fully crewed. Each yacht is assigned a professional skipper who is responsible for navigating the yacht, handling sails, and ensuring the safety of all onboard. Having a skipper allows you to sit back, relax, and fully enjoy the experience without the stress of sailing the yacht yourself.

While the yachts offer a comfortable living space, it’s important to manage expectations regarding space and privacy. With a limited amount of space onboard, it’s essential to be mindful of your fellow crew members and maintain a respectful and considerate atmosphere.

Outside of your yacht, there are also additional accommodation options available for those who prefer to stay on land. Some participants choose to book a hotel or villa before or after The Yacht Week to extend their stay and explore more of Croatia’s incredible destinations. This allows for a mix of onboard and onshore experiences.

Keep in mind that booking separate accommodation on land may require additional planning and coordination. However, it can provide an opportunity for some downtime and a chance to experience the local culture and amenities.

Overall, the yachts provided during The Yacht Week Croatia offer a comfortable and convenient accommodation option for your sailing adventure. With well-appointed cabins, communal living spaces, and professional skippers, you can enjoy the perfect balance of comfort, adventure, and socializing during your time on the yacht.

Yacht Selection

Choosing the right yacht is an essential part of planning your Yacht Week Croatia adventure. The Yacht Week offers a range of different yachts to cater to various group sizes, budgets, and preferences.

When selecting a yacht, here are a few factors to consider:

1. Group Size: Determine the number of people in your crew. Yachts can accommodate different group sizes, from smaller yachts for intimate groups to larger yachts for bigger parties. Make sure the yacht has enough cabins and sleeping arrangements to comfortably accommodate everyone.

2. Yacht Type: Consider the type of yacht that suits your preferences. The Yacht Week offers a variety of options, including monohulls, catamarans, and luxury yachts. Monohulls offer a more traditional sailing experience, while catamarans provide spacious and stable platforms for socializing. Luxury yachts provide additional amenities and a higher level of comfort.

3. Amenities: Check the amenities available onboard the yacht. Some yachts offer additional features such as air-conditioning, Wi-Fi, swimming platforms, and water toys. These amenities can enhance your sailing experience and provide extra fun and convenience.

4. Budget: Set a budget for your yacht rental. Yachts range in price based on their size, age, and level of luxury. Consider the overall cost of the yacht rental, including fuel, provisioning, and any additional fees. It’s important to align your budget with the type and size of the yacht you choose.

5. Skipper or Bareboat: Decide whether you want to charter the yacht with a skipper or as a bareboat. Having a professional skipper onboard can provide peace of mind and let you fully enjoy the experience, especially if you’re not an experienced sailor. If you have the necessary qualifications and experience, you may opt for a bareboat charter and take the helm yourself.

6. Age and Condition: Take into consideration the age and condition of the yacht. Newer yachts may offer upgraded features and a more modern design. However, older yachts can still be charming and well-maintained. Research the yacht’s history and reviews to ensure you choose a reliable and comfortable vessel.

7. Yacht Charter Company: Work with a reputable yacht charter company or The Yacht Week organizers to book your yacht. Ensure they have a good track record of providing quality yachts and reliable service. Read reviews and gather recommendations to make an informed decision.

It’s important to note that the availability of specific yachts may vary depending on the time of booking. Popular yachts tend to book up quickly, so it’s recommended to book your yacht well in advance to secure your preferred choice.

Remember, selecting the right yacht will contribute to the overall enjoyment of your Yacht Week Croatia experience. Consider your group’s size, preferences, and budget to choose a yacht that meets your needs and ensures an unforgettable week of sailing and celebration.

Crewing Options

When participating in The Yacht Week Croatia, there are various crewing options available to accommodate different preferences and group dynamics. Here are some crewing options to consider:

1. Full Crew: If you have a group of friends or a pre-existing crew, you can book a full yacht and sail together. This option allows you to have full control over who you share the yacht with, ensuring a comfortable and familiar environment. You can customize the experience according to your group’s preferences and have a cohesive dynamic throughout the trip.

2. Partial Crew: If you have a smaller group or are open to meeting new people, you can book a partial yacht and be paired with other individuals or smaller crews. This option allows you to join a diverse and sociable group, giving you the opportunity to make new friends and forge connections with people from all over the world. It can create a dynamic and lively atmosphere, with a mix of different personalities and backgrounds onboard.

Many yacht charter companies offer provisioning services, allowing you to pre-order everything you need for meals and snacks. You can choose from a variety of food and drink options, including fresh produce, meats, seafood, beverages, and snacks. This is a convenient option if you prefer to cook your own meals onboard.

2. Dining Out: If you prefer to indulge in local cuisine or take a break from cooking, you can explore the restaurants and cafes in the towns and villages you visit. Taste traditional Croatian dishes, such as fresh seafood, grilled meats, and Mediterranean-inspired cuisine. From beachside cafes to elegant waterfront restaurants, there are plenty of dining options to satisfy your appetite and immerse yourself in the local gastronomy.

3. Onboard Cooking: If you enjoy cooking or want to experiment with meals onboard, the kitchenette on your yacht provides the necessary equipment to prepare your own dishes. You can create delicious meals using the provisions you’ve stocked up on, showcasing your culinary skills and catering to your crew’s preferences. Cooking onboard also allows for flexibility in meal timings and dietary restrictions.

4. Group Dinners: The Yacht Week offers various group dinner events, where you and your crew can join other sailors for a shared dining experience. These events often include a catered meal or barbeque, allowing you to mingle with other participants, exchange stories, and create connections over a delicious feast. Group dinners are a great opportunity to socialize and meet fellow sailors from different yachts.

When it comes to drinks, be prepared to enjoy refreshing beverages throughout your sailing adventure:

1. Bring Your Own: You have the option to bring your own beverages, such as your favorite wine, spirits, or mixers. Pack your preferred drinks in plastic bottles or cans for safety and convenience. Make sure to check the alcohol policies and any restrictions or regulations in Croatia before bringing alcohol onboard.

2. Local Drinks: Embrace the local culture by trying Croatian wines, beers, and spirits. Croatia boasts a rich wine-making tradition, with various regions producing excellent wines. Sample different varieties and discover your favorites. Additionally, try local beers and spirits to fully immerse yourself in the Croatian drinking experience.

3. Beach Bars and Nightlife: Along the coastline of Croatia, there are numerous beach bars, clubs, and nightspots where you can enjoy a wide range of drinks. From refreshing cocktails to ice-cold beers, these establishments offer a vibrant atmosphere to socialize and celebrate with your crew and fellow sailors.

Remember to drink responsibly and within your limits. Stay hydrated throughout the day to combat the sun and heat, especially when engaging in water activities and partying under the Croatian sun.

Whether you choose to cook on board, dine out at local restaurants, or enjoy group dinners and drinks with fellow sailors, there are plenty of options to satisfy your hunger and quench your thirst during The Yacht Week Croatia. Indulge in delicious meals and refreshing drinks as you create unforgettable memories along the beautiful Croatian coastline.

Follow the skipper’s instructions regarding sailing procedures, anchorages, and safety protocols. They have the expertise and experience to navigate the waters and handle any unforeseen situations.

2. Weather Awareness: Stay informed about weather conditions throughout your journey. Be aware of any potential storms or adverse weather and take necessary precautions. Your skipper will have access to weather updates and can advise you on the best course of action to ensure your safety.

3. Safety Equipment: Ensure that the yacht is equipped with essential safety equipment, including life jackets, flares, fire extinguishers, and first aid kits. Familiarize yourself with the location and usage of safety equipment onboard. Ensure that everyone in your crew knows where the safety equipment is stored and how to use it in case of emergencies.

4. Respect Local Regulations: Familiarize yourself with the local laws and regulations of Croatia. Observe speed limits, navigation rules, and any other regulations set by local authorities. It’s important to respect the environment, marine life, and the communities you visit during your journey.

5. Mooring Etiquette: When mooring at marinas or anchorages, be considerate of other vessels. Follow proper mooring procedures and avoid blocking access or overcrowding spaces. Respect any designated areas or zones and ensure that you leave the mooring area as you found it.

6. Responsible Alcohol Consumption: While enjoying the vibrant party atmosphere during The Yacht Week, it’s important to drink responsibly. Exercise moderation and be aware of your alcohol consumption. Stay hydrated and plan ahead for safe transportation after consuming alcohol, such as arranging designated drivers or utilizing taxi services.

7. Swim Safety: Take necessary precautions when swimming or engaging in water activities. Be mindful of water depth and currents, especially in unfamiliar areas. Avoid diving into shallow water and always assess the conditions before cliff jumping or engaging in any water-based activities.

8. Emergency Contacts: Save emergency contact numbers including local authorities, Coast Guard, and medical services in your phone. Ensure that all crew members are aware of these emergency contacts and the location of onboard safety equipment.

Remember to respect the natural surroundings, wildlife, and local communities during your sailing adventure. Dispose of waste responsibly, avoid littering, and be mindful of noise levels, especially during overnight stays.

It’s important to note that safety is a shared responsibility. Communicate openly with your crew members, listen to the guidance of your skipper, and take necessary precautions to ensure that everyone onboard has a safe and enjoyable experience during The Yacht Week Croatia.

What to Expect from Yacht Week Croatia – Ultra Route

Music Festivals | 0 comments

yacht week croatia festival

I had heard people talk about Yacht Week for the longest time and figured it was about time I crossed this festival trip off of my bucket list. I had also wanted to go to Ultra Europe so it seemed like the perfect opportunity to feed two birds with one scone. Although the trip was an epic experience, there were quite a few things I wish I had known beforehand. Throw out all of your expectations of everything that you expect Yacht Week to be because believe me, it is completely different.

WHAT IS YACHT WEEK AND HOW DOES IT WORK?

Yacht Week is a floating festival sailing experience that occurs in various locations all over the world. It is essentially a week long party. Every route is different and sails to various locations. Yacht Week books private parties and hosts them for all the attendees.

BOOK THE YACHT& FLIGHT

If you have a big enough group of friends who are willing to come, you can book a full yacht. If not, then you book by cabin. I sailed with my boyfriend and my friend. We had to book a cabin with us two girls and then my boyfriend booked solo. We then contacted Yacht Week beforehand and asked if they could place us all on the same yacht. We also went with a couple of other friends but they were on a separate yacht since they chose the non-catered boat. The next step is to choose your crew. Yacht week prides themselves on keeping a strict gender ratio so it is not a complete bro fest, which I respect because nobody wants that anyways. You also have the option to use a crew finder if you book a full yacht and somebody backs out. We had an awesome crew and made some great friendships. Everyone really stepped up to the plate in terms of cleaning, staying organized and attending to any responsibilities that come with sailing. I highly recommend getting a host. The host just makes the trip a million and one times easier by cooking and cleaning for you.

WHAT IS THE COST OF YACHT WEEK?

Yacht Week is pretty pricey but you can pay in installments. We paid $1668.00 for a catered yacht which includes our stay, Ultra VIP ticket, 6 breakfast and lunch meals, a skipper, host and water. You are also responsible for feeding your skipper and host. As much as I loved our host and skipper, this concept is a shame on Yacht Week. They should pay their employees enough and provide extra for meals while they are on a trip. Many skipper and hosts sail for the whole summer so as you can imagine they must be wiped out by the end and they should be compensated for all their hard work!

In addition to the the initial yacht cost and feeding the skipper and host, you are responsible for port and taxi fees. I wish I would have known the extent of how much extra money we would need. Plan to have an extra $500 in cash on you for all of these fees. You also need to give a deposit when you arrive. We also tipped our skipper and host $100 each that we sent electronically via Paypal.

DO YOU NEED TRAVEL INSURANCE FOR YACHT WEEK?

I cannot stress enough how important travel insurance is. We failed to do so and had a few nightmare experiences. First nightmare was when our friend stepped on a broken bottle and the glass went through his shoe. He had to get stitches. Second nightmare was when I was dancing on the bleachers at Ultra when my foot slipped off the edge, I would have fallen off the bleachers if my boyfriend hadn’t have grabbed me when I started to fall. My whole leg was cut and bruised. I didn’t need to go to the hospital but I still have the scar to this day. The last nightmare was my friend fell through the window at the top of the yacht. She went to the hospital (which smelled like cigarettes and had a huge line in the emergency room). She waited for 6 hours just to be told her neck was bruised. I’m telling you these stories not to scare you but to just be mindful that accidents happen and it is better to be safe than stuck in a hospital in another country and having to pay any medical costs. Find the best travel insurance with Aardvark Travel Insurance who partners with the top travel insurance companies.

WHAT TO PACK FOR YACHT WEEK

Duffle bag – I recommend packing a soft duffle bag for the trip. I brought a carry on just because we were traveling to Italy after Croatia but having a soft duffle bag makes it easier to fit your bag on the yacht with everyone else’s bags.

Many people brought water guns, inflatable rafts and floaties but it is difficult to travel with these items, so I recommend buying them there or using the ones that the crew left from the last sailing.

Check out the themes to know what clothes to bring. Our sailing had a nautical theme and an all white party.

One pair of sandals, one pair of slip-on boat shoes and tennis shoes. (I also brought combat boots for Ultra)

Bathing suits

WHAT IS YACHT WEEK CROATIA ULTRA ROUTE LIKE?

There are two Yacht Week Croatia Ultra Routes since Ultra is two weekends. We went the second weekend of Ultra, so when we first arrived to Split that morning, we needed to check in, get our belongings on the yacht and then hurry on over to Ultra. We had a red eye flight from San Francisco so we did not land into Split until early Saturday morning. The check in process is very long and tedious. You are expected to meet up with your crew and then someone has to go grocery shopping with the Host. We were really sort of annoyed by this because we paid for the catered yacht and expected that they had done the shopping beforehand. We also discussed with our group what alcohol we would need for the week and gave the host and the volunteer shopper the money to pick it up.

Once we finally got on our yacht, I was a bit disappointed. This was not a “yacht” in my opinion. It was a small cramped boat. The yacht included 7 guys (one including the skipper) and 5 girls (one including the host) I had no idea how we were all going to sleep on the boat. There were two rooms with private bathrooms, one bunk-bed room and two other rooms with no bathroom. The skipper and host slept in the living room area. Since my boyfriend and my friend arrived early, we had the luxury of being able to pick our room. My boyfriend and I slept in a twin bedroom with a private bathroom together and my friend took the other room. A couple and their friend arrived late and were discussing where they would sleep. Our skipper and host wanted the couple to have their own room and my friend to sleep with the random other girl (IN THE SAME BED, I might add). My friend completely refused for obvious reasons because they just met. My friend fought for her own room and the couple had to sleep in the same bed with their friend. I felt bad for them but it is honestly Yacht Week’s fault for overbooking. After the bed fiasco, we were supposed to rush and get ready for Ultra and be on the bus by 8pm.

I have been to Ultra Miami and Ultra Europe just doesn’t compare in terms of production and set up. The awesome part about going on Yacht Week – Croatia Ultra route is that you get to go to Ultra as a VIP. I was super stoked about this until we showed up and we realized that there are several different types of VIP. On the bleachers, we were the first level of VIP, then you had to have a different wristband to go to the higher levels of VIP. When you think of “VIP”, you think of bottle service and some extra perks but all VIP got us was to stand on the first layer of bleachers. We did however get two free drink tickets.

Ultra Europe Day 1

Ultra Europe Day 1

Ultra Europe Day 2

Ultra Europe Day 2

Ultra was a blast and was definitely the highlight of the whole entire trip. The first night the Yacht Week bus left without us (we literally ran to the bus but they did not see us). Our phones were dead so we had to hitch a taxi ride. We finally found a guy who would help us and he took us halfway and dropped us off to his wife’s car who took us the rest of the way. The next day we rallied up for the second night of Ultra. We had a ton of fun dancing, however, the second night took a turn for a worst when I had my boyfriend’s phone in my fanny pack and it was gone 🙁 We immediately checked lost and found and checked back for days after, but it was never found. We even called the police station each day but the police would literally hang up on us.

It was really apparent that Croatians did not like tourists. Any bar, restaurant or even the police were just not friendly and made some comments like they didn’t want us to be partying on their land. When my boyfriend and I went to the police station to try to find his phone (Ultra lost and found recommended we did this), the police would completely ignore us. My boyfriend finally got angry and knocked loudly on the window saying “I’m talking to you” and the policeman ran out and yelled at us. It was really scary because you just never know how the police are going to act in a different country. He took us back to where the phones were and said his phone wasn’t there but honestly, I had a feeling in my gut it was.

After Ultra we sailed to Hvar. Ideally we would want to do some sort of excursion but we were dead from Ultra. We had to shower at the port once we arrived because our shower/sink was broken on our yacht. We then went to a club called Carpe Diem, where we bought our first bottle service. The next day we swam for a bit and then went another party where everyone dressed Nautical style. I heard of activities going on like yoga but there was just absolutely no way that we would make it to these events after the long nights of partying. If you’re not a huge partier, I don’t recommend this route.

Yacht Week Floating Party

The floating party was my favorite day at sea. The yachts all come together in a big circle and everyone brings out their floaties to have a giant sea party with a floating DJ. All day we floated and even swam to party on other boats. It was a blast!

Yacht week croatia

After that we sailed to Vis. I noticed that some yachts would pull all the way into the port while other skippers would take the yachts downshore and tie them to some rocks. This instance was the first moment I felt like our skipper was taking advantage of us. Our skipper was constantly asking us for more money for gas and port fees. However, we weren’t even docked at the port so I don’t understand why we needed to pay the extra money. I thought we had already paid all of the fees on day one. It was just so unprofessional the way they collected money after the fact but there was nothing you could really say since you’re just with the skipper and host on the yacht.

Although I had my speculations about our skipper taking extra money, him and our host were friendly and funny people. Our skipper did however get super intoxicated every single night and even slept on the streets of Hvar one night. Our host was an amazing cook! I felt so bad for the other yachts that had to do grocery shopping. I cannot even imagine having to spend the day hauling all those groceries to the yacht and having to re-up throughout the week. Our host fed us well with breakfast, lunch and dinner. I could see compared to the other yachts that we were eating GOOD! Our friends who decided to not get a catered yacht were spending so much money on food at restaurants and would have to wait to eat until they docked. In my opinion, a catered yacht is a must!

The last day we all went to a fancy restaurant to eat together as a crew. I learned the new game “Buffalo” which is if someone yells out “buffalo” while you have your drink in your hand, you have to chug the whole thing. That game really set things off for the final party at Fort George castle party, which was pretty spectacular. The next morning as we sailed back was the famous regatta party where each of the crew’s dress up and race towards the shore. My crew didn’t get the memo and weren’t dressed up. Some people went all themed out and even had dance routines memorized.

By the end of the trip I felt exhausted and filthy. The boat had no AC with only a small fan so our sheets were completely stained with sweat. Once we finally hit the shore, the land felt like it was rocking. It took a few days to completely recover from the trip. If I went to Yacht Week again, I would do a different route to see if we would have a similar experience. I would also book the catamaran style boat because they are much more spacious and nicer. Overall it was an incredible trip that I’ll cherish for a lifetime but I’m not sure I would ever drop all of that money to do the same route again. I do think everyone should experience this unforgettable experience at least once in their life! I hope my experience helps prepare you on what to expect.

Everything You Wanted to Know About Yacht Week Croatia

Sailing in Croatia

Did you know that Yacht Week Croatia is an opportunity to sail the Adriatic sea with your friends and have fun?

Croatian coast consists of almost 700 islands and is one of the most beautiful coasts in Europe. The pleasant Mediterranean climate of the with warm and dry summers and mild winters allows for a longer sailing season.

Moreover, the coast is full of natural bays, dives, caves, beaches, and crystal clear sea. All this makes the Croatian Adriatic coast a perfect place for sailing and sea holidays.

Sailing among the Croatian islands will give you a new place to visit every day. Some days you will spend on a yacht, and some on lonely beaches or in quiet coastal towns. Along with the cultural heritage, the hospitality of the hosts and excellent food, you can make your vacation in Croatia an unforgettable experience.

In this article, we’ll lead you through all the essential information you need to know about the Yacht Week brand. So, come on board!

What Is Yacht Week Croatia?

Yacht Week Croatia is a seven-day motor-assisted sailing experience that takes place once a year at various locations in the Croatian Adriatic. The main organizer is European Travel Ventures. Current main destinations are:

  • Greece (Athens route)
  • the Caribbean (BVI route),
  • Montenegro (Adriatic route), and
  • Croatia (Original route, Ultra festival route, and Dubrovnik route).

It is an authentic marine festival because you get to experience sailing and cruising on the gorgeous waters in one week.

The routes of the Week include Split, Šipan, Mljet, Korčula, Hvar, Vis, and Brač on their maps. The destinations vary every year, but one of the major cities such as the city of Split, Croatia always remains on the Yacht Week route. The route you sail depends on the destination you choose.

The yacht you rented docks in a different destination every day, which allows you to see and experience many things during the week. You can see historical sites, natural beauties, try out delicious food, various activities, and so on. Everyone will find something for themselves.

What to Bring on a Yacht Week

Take your nice clothes.

There will be some hot days on the boat, so flip-flops are a necessity. However, Yacht Week parties sometimes require formal attire. You’ll dock the yacht and go to a private garden party, or visit places like Carpe Diem in Hvar, one of the best clubs in Europe.

What’s more, if you decide to go to a fancy restaurant, sightseeing or visiting museums, make sure to have your nice clothes. They’ll probably kick you out if you show up in shorts and a sleeveless shirt.

Bring Medications

You probably didn’t think about it, but minimal sleep and alcohol don’t do good to your immune system. Neither does sharing water bottles and cutlery (with the people you may not know).

Moreover, seasickness isn’t that uncommon, so prepare your bags. Also, you might decide to cook on board and accidentally cut your finger. Therefore, take your first aid kit, all the vitamins and medications you find useful and make sure you know your first aid drill.

Have a Car-Charger Adapter

Standard yachts often have only 12-volt power outlets. If you’re a group of electronic device maniacs, you’ll need electricity. So, consider buying a solar-powered charger and look for a car-charger adapter that will help you with your laptops, smartphones, or air pumps for your unicorn floaties.

One thing to avoid is a hairdryer. The outlets won’t handle as much electricity. Plus, you’ll probably spend half of the time in the sea, anyway.

How to Book a Yacht Week Croatia

Once you get to know what essentials you should bring, it’s time to book the yacht. The bookings start in October, so you’ll have to hurry to book the next year’s sailing tour. After you decide which route to take, you can click on “Book now” to go with the purchase.

It will give you two options: “Book a full yacht” or “Book a cabin on a yacht.” You can book the latter only for specific routes, whereas you’ll need to book a full boat for your Croatian vacation.

Next, you’ll need to pick a Standard, Premium, or Premium Plus option. The first option is a yacht selected for you that can accommodate up to 9 people. The second and third option offers you to handpick your own boat. There can be 11 people on your Premium or Premium Plus yacht.

The best ones to choose are Premium Plus yachts. You’ll have plenty of space, they have bigger bedroom cabins. Trust us, you’ll need that kind of comfort after two nights of drinking. Also, the rear back area is an excellent spot to sunbathe and to socialize, if you decide to go on a cruise with people other than your friends. It can happen since there has to be a 50-50 gender ratio. Sometimes an exception is possible, but it only benefits the female population.

Pro tip: Let the Yacht Week crew assign you a skipper. You can’t expect your skipper to enjoy vast amounts of alcohol and sail the whole week. European Travel Ventures are real professionals, and they’ll give you the best skippers available.

How Much Will It Cost

The cruise usually starts and ends on Saturdays. The price for a Standard cruise is between 700 and 1,030 Euros per person.

The price for a Premium or a Premium Plus cruise, on the other hand, starts at 872 Euros per person. It climbs up to 1,999 Euros per person. Again, make sure to book in advance due to high demand.

You’ll need about 2,500 Euros for a week. It includes the stay, costs, and basic drinks onboard without going to fancy clubs and restaurants.

There’s a final party for crews of all 50 boats that sail during the Week. It’s a perfect opportunity for another get-together before the last night on board.

Would You Consider Yacht Week as Your Next Vacation Destination?

Finally, The Yacht Week Croatia is perhaps the best way to spend your vacation. Sail the magnificent crystal clear waters of the Adriatic, have fun with friends and enjoy the beauties of the area. Sign up for next year if you like that kind of fun.

If you’re already booked your Yacht Week Croatia and you’re looking to find some peace, make sure to find a perfect stay for you and your friends or family. Book Villa Lava , an ideal luxury villa near the seaside that has everything for you to relax.

Affordable Island-Hopping in Croatia? What Could Go Wrong?

A 30-percent-off Black Friday sale on a cruise aboard a yacht meant off-season sailing and being prepared for the unexpected.

A view from a hill of a red-roofed town surrounding a harbor. In the foreground, the ruins of an ancient fortification wall follow the downward slope of a steep hill. And in the distance, beyond the harbor with its numerous small boats, is a string of small green islands.

By Elaine Glusac

Elaine Glusac is the Frugal Traveler columnist, focusing on budget-friendly tips and journeys.

As Croatians tell the story , the Greek hero Odysseus was shipwrecked and held captive on the Croatian island of Mljet. Visiting in May, I and six other sailors embraced the myth when the motor on our 54-foot yacht failed.

“Remember, Odysseus spent seven years on Mljet,” said Ivan Ljubovic, our captain. “We can do two nights.”

In the scheme of things, the clogged fuel filter that impeded our progress on a seven-night, island-hopping cruise from Split to Dubrovnik on a yacht — which the passengers helped sail — was minor. Though an engine, even on a sailboat, is vital for docking and sticking to schedules on becalmed days, most of my shipmates agreed that getting waylaid in a village with Roman ruins on a turquoise bay was an acceptable fate.

I had been resigned to what were, in my mind, worse inconveniences when I had signed up for the trip last November. Then, the tour operator G Adventures had put several trips on sale over the Black Friday weekend. Its best deals were in the off-season, which meant potentially chilly weather and closed restaurants and attractions. But leaving in late April for seven nights of island hopping at roughly $1,300 — after a 30 percent discount — was too tempting to pass up.

My cousin Kim agreed and we made plans to pack rain gear and meet in Split to test the budget waters.

‘Everything between is an adventure’

Little about the itinerary was published pre-departure and none of it was firm.

“Split and Dubrovnik are fixed,” said the captain, who would pilot the ship solo and double as our guide, on our first day. “Everything between is an adventure.”

It started with the Sauturnes, a handsome Kufner yacht with four snug guest cabins, four economical bathrooms where the retractable faucet doubled as a shower spigot, and a spacious galley. Our “crew,” a mix of Australians and Americans ranging from 18 to 75 — all of whom had also jumped on the promotional pricing — spent most of the time atop the boat, where foam mattresses invited sunbathing and a cockpit awning provided shade.

The weather, which turned out to be sunny and comfortably cool, was not our greatest concern. The G Adventures website had mentioned well-known islands, including beachy Brac and Vis , which played a convincing Greek idyll in the movie “Mamma Mia 2.” But since many places would be closed in the shoulder season, we would proceed, according to the captain, based on the dictates of the weather and conditions on shore.

Meals were not included, which meant finding open restaurants was critical. For shipboard breakfasts and lunches, we each chipped in 50 euros (about $54) for communal groceries, which we shopped for at local markets. At night, we would dine at restaurants; G Adventures advised budgeting $250 to $325 for the week, which was accurate, though we often splurged on Croatian wine (a carafe of house red averaged $15).

Small ports

After the frenzy of grocery shopping and moving into the bunk-bedded cabin Kim and I shared, we experienced the Zen of sailing as the ship set off on a sunny morning for 43-mile-long Hvar , the longest and purportedly sunniest island in Croatia.

Neighboring islands drifted past as the wind patterned the sea in shifting ripples and ruffles. A flock of shearwaters soared by at eye level.

Within a few hours, the ridgelines of steep Hvar appeared, revealing terraced lavender fields and olive orchards. Motoring down a long, narrow inlet, we arrived in Stari Grad , a village of stone homes with terra cotta roof tiles, as travelers had since 384 B.C., when Greek sailors from the island of Paros settled here.

Our mooring provided a front-row view of fishing boats and cafes animating the waterfront. Stari Grad’s attractions, including the Greek ruins of Faros and a 17th-century Venetian cathedral, had yet to open for the season, but we relished exploring the old quarter’s narrow lanes and deserted plazas.

From the waterfront, an aerobic 20-minute hike up a steep hill crowned by a giant white cross offered views over Stari Grad and the plains beyond, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of fourth-century agricultural fields, with stone walls circumscribing grapevines and olive orchards.

That evening, we visited them to reach Konoba Kokot , a farm restaurant that specializes in “peka,” a kind of barbecue in which meat cooks under an iron lid piled with hot coals. The family that runs it opened in the preseason, welcoming us with bracing shots of rakija, a local herbal liquor. At a long table under an arbor, we gorged on homemade goat cheese, wild boar pate and, from the hearth, roast lamb, veal and octopus with limitless jugs of red and white wine for 35 euros a person.

Starry nights

Small ships are unmatched at getting into small ports, but a yacht trip is also a little like camping, starting most mornings with D.I.Y. instant coffee. Marinas offered free bathhouses with showers.

Cool temperatures apparently deterred the celebrity-filled mega yachts, which are known to anchor in the town of Hvar on the south shore of Hvar island. Our captain declared it the “Mykonos of Croatia” as we motored by the port bustling with visitors carrying shopping bags and cones of gelato.

With clear weather in the forecast, we moored in an undeveloped cove east of town. The mooring belonged to the owners of Moli Onte restaurant, who ferried us to land on a motorized dingy, allowing us enough time before dinner to visit the fortress above Hvar and have an Ozujsko beer on St. Stephens Square, the largest in the region of Dalmatia.

Back on board, with no artificial light to wash out the night sky, we hit the upper deck for stargazing. As my shipmates peeled off to bed, I grabbed a blanket and beanie and bedded down under the stars for the evolving show, periodically waking to catch the drama of the moon rising, reflected in the still water.

Little Dubrovnik

Fingers of gray rock reached down to meet sloping vineyards along Hvar’s south coast as we departed for its neighbor, Korcula. On our longest day of sailing, five hours, I welcomed the chance to play first mate, manning the lines on the jib sail.

To break up the trip, Captain Ljubovic navigated to a quiet cove off the Peljesac Peninsula where the Caribbean-blue waters, cloudless sky and sandy bottom convinced us to jump in despite numbing sea temperatures.

Fifteenth-century walls ring the historic center of Korcula, earning it the nickname “Little Dubrovnik.” Past the stone gates carved with a winged lion representing the empire of Venice, which controlled much of the Adriatic after the 13th century, narrow alleys led to ornate churches and mansions. There was no better history trip than getting lost in the web of pedestrian lanes. Or so we told ourselves as we passed the purported home of Marco Polo, still closed preseason.

Along the seafront walls, restaurants served pizza and seafood under lights strung in the pines and we caught sunset from a former turret, now converted into Massimo Cocktail Bar , which requires patrons to climb a ladder to the rooftop, a caution against second rounds.

The most romantic port of the trip was also the rowdiest, at least in the marina, which was hosting a Polish sailing regatta. When I headed for the showers at 6 a.m. the next morning, I found a group still cheerfully dancing atop a yacht littered in empty booze bottles and crushed potato chips.

Marooned on Mljet

We left Korcula on strong 20-knot “jugo” or south winds and Captain Ljubovic unleashed the sails, saying “You paid for a sailing vacation, not a motorboat.”

As we tacked back and forth toward Mljet , the boat heeled at a queasy angle and we took face shots of ocean spray.

On Mljet, where the western end of the island is home to Mljet National Park , we rented bikes (10 euros) to ride a lung-busting route over the park’s mountain spine. On the other side, we cycled around a pair of inland lakes and took a boat trip to a 12th-century monastery built on an island in one of them (park admission, 15 euros).

Docked in the still sleepy town of Polace, we heard tales of high season, when up to 100 yachts anchor in the bay and members of the band U2 were once seen biking in the park. After a brief shower, the town glimmered at sunset and the restaurant Stella Maris welcomed us with grilled sea bass (25 euros) and prawns (20 euros).

“I’m so glad I chose this time, because I don’t do crowds,” said my shipmate Nova Hey, 46, of Sydney, who was traveling with her 18-year-old daughter.

In the morning, I had the trail to the peak of Montokuc to myself. The roughly three-mile round-trip hike reached one of the highest points on the island, a rocky knob with stunning panoramas shared by a family of feral goats.

Not long thereafter, the Sauternes’ engine refused to turn over, stranding us in a national park on a remote island with no mechanics.

Teeming Dubrovnik

The next morning, Captain Ljubovic jimmied a fix but it didn’t last long and the engine died again, this time just opposite a cave on Mljet that we joked had to be the refuge of Odysseus.

After a morning of light sailing, a mechanic from the mainland arrived by speedboat and within an hour we were motoring toward the Franjo Tudman Bridge that spans the inlet to the Dubrovnik marina where hot showers awaited.

“Dubrovnik is the most expensive city in Croatia,” said Captain Ljubovic as we spent the last of our pooled money, 70 euros, hiring a taxi van to get us to and from the walled heart of the ancient city about 15 minutes away.

With two large cruise ships in port, Dubrovnik was teeming with visitors and the price to climb the stone walls that encircle the city was a sticker-shocking 35 euros. (In the ensuing two days Kim and I would spend post-cruise in the city, we bought the more comprehensive Dubrovnik Pass for 35 euros that included admission to the walls as well as several museums and public bus transportation.)

On our final evening, we measured the lack of crowds versus closed museums; perfect hiking weather versus swim-inviting water; ample dock space versus more restaurant choices — and felt we’d come out ahead sailing in the bargain season.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

<< Previous page

Pages:  379-406

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.
