22-Square Metre

22 square metre yacht

In 1907, the Swedish Sailing Federation established a committee to design a national racing yacht class. Previous handicap rules had tended to be very simple and boats had evolved to be very fast and extreme racing machines, which were perceived as unsafe and impractical. Recently developed other options were the Universal rule (also called ‘American rule’) and the International Metre rule, neither of which were seen as fully satisfactory by the Swedish Sailing Federation.

The committee completed its proposal the following year. It was accepted as the first Square Metre Rule: yachts were to be classed by their sail area which was fixed. In addition, there were minimum requirements for weight and cabin measurements. Four new classes were originally accepted: 22m² , 30m² , 45m² and 55m² classes. Soon, new classes were to follow: 38m² class in 1912; 15m² , 75m² , 95m² , 120m² and 150m² classes in 1913; finally in 1915, 38m² and 45m² classes were combined to new 40m² class. The new rule became very popular within the Baltic region; between 1907 and 1920, Finnish yards alone built some 600 Square metre rule yachts. During peak years, Skerry cruisers made up 95 percent of the yards’ output.  They were also exported to other European countries and the USA.

The Emperor’s Boat

22 square metre yacht

By Dave Matthews member of Finger Lakes chapter

Lancea’s documented history goes back to the fourth previous owner, Russ Balmer, who sailed her out of the Port Huron Yacht Club in the 1960s. Before that the history is murky but the last previous owner believed her to be the very same boat that was originally built for the Emperor of Annam (now Vietnam) in 1935. That boat is quite well known, thanks to the Swedish Maritime Museum’s collection of documents from the designer, Knud Reimers, and Chapter 36 of Uffa Fox’s book Sail and Power, “22 Square Meter Class”, which focused on it. From the Museum we have Reimers’s original detailed design drawings, as well as his correspondence with the Emperor.

Is Lancea really the Emperor’s boat? Her builder’s plaque says “Knud H. Reimers, Yacht Designer and Broker, Stockholm, Sweden.” Of the dozen or so 22 Square Meters Reimers drew, Lancea’s shape matches the Emperor’s boat as well as any and better than some. Whether she’s the Emperor’s boat or not, Lancea is a fine representative member of the 22 Square Meter Class.

22 square metre yacht

The Square Meter Rule is a yacht measurement rule created by the Swedish Sailing Association in 1908, based largely on sail area. It lent itself to graceful, narrow designs with long bow and stern overhangs and tall rigs. Lancea is 36 feet long overall with a beam of only 6 feet. Other typical characteristics are her tall, narrow mainsail; low-slung, broad genoa jib; and curved mast. In the first half of the 20th century there were racing fleets of 22 and 30 Square Meters on the Great Lakes and the Massachusetts coast, but the majority have always been in northern Europe, where they are still raced. Some great action photos of a 2014 race in Berlin are at https://soeren.zenfolio.com/22qm2014.

Lancea came to me ready to sail and I’ve done little more than refresh the finish. Her hull is Honduras mahogany, deck and mast Oregon spruce. She is close-planked and seals up water-tight without caulk. She sails with a nearly neutral helm at all angles of heel. With her narrow beam, she heels readily before the keel stiffens her, immersing the hull overhangs and increasing her waterline length. Currently she daysails on Cayuga Lake out of Ithaca NY. Lancea has given me five years of great pleasure so far, and it will soon be time for her to move on to her next owner.

Very cool to see this. This was one of my first big restorations starting off my career as a wooden boat builder in 1996.

Hi Mike! I’d like to get in touch with you about Lancea. She’s for sale now, and there’s more information about her early days in the comments below. Thanks for the restoration work you did. I’ve enjoyed her mightily. – Dave

Oops, sorry, forgot the address. I’m at [email protected] .

You ALWAYS get my clicks with the sailboats and this one did not disappoint! What a beautiful boat! If possible for the owner to see some follow up questions… is there an engine? Can more detail pics be posted? What is below decks? Does she stay in the water all summer? Is she covered when not in use?

Hi Shannon, There is no engine. She has a Torqeedo electric motor for light use. It stows away along with the motor mount when not in use so it doesn’t spoil the look. Below decks she’s very open, lots of storage space. The cabin has two long benches, could be used as berths. No galley or head. Yes, she’s at her mooring all summer. Winters are under tarps outdoors on a custom trailer. There’s no cover in summer other than the sail cover. I’d rather show her off, and deal with the ravages of the sun on the varnished deck in the spring. There are lots more photos on Flickr, https://www.flickr.com/photos/dematth/collections/72157647612707584/ And more details of the history (such things as Mike Corrigan’s restoration) at https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B4YfhHvguFi2Mmx4ZHRscGYyRVk/view You can contact me for more information, e.g. by replying to this comment.

Dave: this is an old post, are you still there? I’m looking to track down Viking, US33. My great uncle’s boat from Marblehead long ago. I believe she is at Port Huron. Do you know?

Andy Chase [email protected]

I too am a sucker for old sailboat stories and photos, of which this is exceptional, particularly the link to the extensive photo album. Thanks for submitting this – the Finger Lakes have an honored history in the vintage boating community.

Being a teenager in the 60’s of a family who were members of the Milwaukee Yacht Club I got to be a first hand witness in the transition of wood to fiberglass. As the docks were filling up more and more every summer with new polished Columbias, C&C’s, Cals, Pearsons not to mention traditional one designs like Lightnings and Int 14’s going the way of glass, I was always fascinated with the 22 Square meter owned by friends of a friend of our family. It was on a mooring and kept in good shape. Whenever we passed it on our way out to the race course I found myself transfixed to its’ lines. On one hand it seemed so impractical compared to the 32 footer I happened to be crewing on. On the other hand, it had the most beautiful lines of anything that had a mast and for that one moment as we went by it, I wanted to be on that 22 Square meter instead!

In re square meter boats on Cayuga Lake, do you know anything about Robert Paccone’s 30 from 1971? He lived in Apalachin and worked for IBM in Endicott and sailed out of Ithaca.

Hi Kenneth, I’ve heard of a 30 being on the lake a long time ago, maybe it was that one. I’ve only been sailing Cayuga Lake since 1980. There haven’t been any Square Meters here during that time, until now. Sorry for the slow response. The system doesn’t notify me when there are comments. – Dave

David: I just bumped into your article about Lancia. We sold Lancia to Russ Balmer around 1962 after sailing this wonderful boat for about 7 years out of Port Clinton, Ohio. I have only one faded photo of 22 US 22 but great memories. cell 843 814 4077

Dave and Willy, I by chance found your article tonight regarding Lancea, my Dad Russ Balmer’s pride and joy for many years. I believe he purchased her in the mid 1960’s from Willy. He spent many Spring’s getting her in tip top shape at Port Huron (MI) Yacht Club for another season of racing in Lake Huron. I assisted him and sailed with him. She was quite the racing sloop! The boat was still in beautiful condition when he finally let her go to a buyer in Ontario. We were confident Lancea was in fact built for the Emperor of Indochina. That Emperor later replaced her with the 30 Square Meter, Moose, which also sailed out of Port Huron with us back in the 60’s, 70’s and 80’s. Lancea looks magnificent. I had heard she fell into disrepair sometime after Dad sold her. Thank you for having her restored and the story about her. D Balmer

Moose was John S(ilsby) Lawrence’s 30 sq m, 30 US32. It was originally from Marblehead (delivered at the end of April 1936) but later moved to Port Huron where it was known as Mairead (1949-1954). My grandfather raced against Moose in both 30 US40 Arista and in 30 US41 Ellen, from 1946-1947 and then in 1949. Moose was a Reimer’s design from the Motala Batvarv. Irwin Russel “Russ” Balmer owned the ca 1930s Lancea, but also previously owned US2 Diane, one of the first two 22sks in the US (in 1929). Balmer was a PHYC member for 55 years.

Hi Denny! Willy and I are trying to get in touch with you to find out more about Lancea’s early days. I’m at [email protected] , cell 607-262-0443. Talk to you soon I hope. – Dave

22 square metre yacht

SilverYachts continues construction of entry-level 22m SilverCat

Tillberg Design of Sweden has unveiled new renderings of the 22-metre SilverCat project currently in-build at the Australian shipyard Silver Yachts Asian facility. Work has begun on construction after the initial project discussions in late 2021.

The semi-custom power catamaran penned by Espen Øino has a 10.8-metre beam and “interior volume equivalent to that of a 35 to 45m monohull with a volume of 180 GT," according to the design team.

Now part of the Viken Group, Tillberg Design of Sweden has appointed Daniel Nerhagen, partner and director of Tillberg Design of Sweden to oversee the build project. Nerhagen explained that “the exterior design and the basic elements of the vessel were already complete when we were brought on board, but we had complete freedom when it came to the layout of the interior and open deck spaces and the design and style".

The Scandinavian-influenced interior design combines oak wood with vibrant colours of oranges and blues within the soft furnishings, complemented by a natural palette that lets the colours shine through.

“The brief was for a lot of loose furniture so the yacht could be changed according to an owner’s taste, but overall, the brief was to create something different,” explained Nerhagen.

The 22-metre power catamaran offers accommodation configurations for up to ten guests and communal areas benefit from a 65.5-square-metre main saloon with wraparound windows, a formal dining space and a lounge.

Once completed, SilverCat will reach speeds of up to 20 knots, thanks to power from twin Volvo D13 engines. Alongside this entry-level 22-metre model of the SilverCat series, Silver Yachts also offers a 23.9-metre SC24.

Antonio Romano, commercial director of the Viken Group said the project was  "a showcase of the diversity of the company and the talents that lie within our team".

Wooden Ships Comments on this 22sqm Skargardskryssa Regatta yacht

This 22 sqm Skargardskryssa  was built in Stockholm in 1935 as a regatta race yacht and has a well documented history detailing her many victories over the years.  Restored by the present owners in Switzerland over an eight month period, the hull was stripped to bare wood and repainted and every fitting on the boat was removed, repaired and refitted.  The hull was found to be in very sound condition, needing little repair work.

This is a very extreme yacht, designed for flat water racing in the Baltic and exceptionally fast.  She is now in stunning condition and ready to sail.  She comes with a custom built 4 wheel trailer for transporting her, which has hydraulic brakes so can be towed behind a normal 4WD vehicle.

22 sqm Skargardskryssa Regatta Yacht

Construction

Baltic pine planking copper rivet fastened to laminated White Oak ribs.  All ribs are in perfect condition.  Keel in White Oak.  External Iron ballast keel.

Two large ring frames of galvanised steel help support the structure of the hull, tying the stresses of the rig into the keel.

Decks and cockpit

Douglas Fir laid deck.   Varnished Honduras Mahogany king plank and cover board with a small toe rail all round set just in from the deck edge.  Forehatch for getting sails on deck.

Single cleat on the foredeck and aft deck for mooring.

Deep cockpit with a bench thwart fore and aft allows room for the crew to work around each other.

Superstructure

Honduras mahogany coachroof coamings with chrome portholes.  Camber on the coachroof deck gives it an elegance lacking in so many boats while still allowing reasonable room below.

Fractional bermudan sloop on a keel stepped Sitka Spruce mast.

Stainless steel standing rigging to internal chainplates.  Single standing back stay with twin runners on block and tackles.

Roller furling headsail comes through the foredeck with the roller drum mounted within the hull.

All as new condition.   Mainsail, genoa and spinnaker.

New Yamaha short shaft 5hp outboard mounts on a bracket on the end of the transom.

Accommodation

2 berths with stowage forward for sails etc.  Sitting headroom below with full length bunks if required.  Ample stowage for spare sails, warps and fenders.

New custom made double axle hydraulic braked trailer.

Body of British tech entrepreneur Lynch retrieved from yacht, source says

Rescue personnel work near a bodybag at the scene where a luxury yacht sank, off the coast of Porticello, near the Sicilian city of Palermo, Italy, August 22, 2024.

REUTERS/Louiza Vradi

PORTICELLO, Italy – The body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch was retrieved on Thursday, August 22, from the wreck of his family yacht that sank earlier this week off the coast Sicily during a violent tempest, a source close to the rescue operation said.

Lynch’s 18-year daughter Hannah is still unaccounted for, the source said. The bodies of the other four people who vanished when the boat went down were recovered from the yacht on Wednesday.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-meter-long (184-ft) superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in a matter of minutes after a fierce storm struck.

Lynch, 59, one of the UK’s best-known tech entrepreneurs, had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his recent acquittal in a major US fraud trial.

Besides Lynch and his daughter, the other people who failed to escape from the boat were Judy and Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Fifteen people, including Lynch’s wife, managed to get to safety, while the body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was found near the wreck hours after the disaster.

Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past three days, but operations have been challenging due to the depth and the narrowness of the places that the divers are scouring, the fire brigade said.

It compared the efforts to those carried out, on a larger scale, for the Costa Concordia, the luxury cruise liner that capsized off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012, killing 32 people.

The disaster has baffled naval marine experts who said such a vessel, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini and presumed to have top-class fittings and safety features, should have been able to withstand such weather.

Prosecutors in the nearby town of Termini Imerese have opened an investigation and authorities have started questioning passengers and witnesses.

The captain, James Cutfield, and crew have made no official comment on the disaster.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group TISGR.MI, which includes Perini, said the Bayesian was “one of the safest boats in the world” and basically unsinkable.

He added that he believed the disaster was caused by a chain of human mistakes and that the storm had been expected, in interviews with Italian media.

“The ship sank because it took on water, from where investigators will have to say,” Costantino told television news program TG1 late on Wednesday.

Citing data from the yacht’s automatic tracking system and based on available footage, Costantino said it took 16 minutes from when the wind began buffeting the yacht, and it began taking on water, for it to sink.

Costantino said the Milan-listed group had suffered “enormous damage” to its reputation, with shares falling 2.5% since the disaster. – Rappler.com

The identities of five bodies found inside the wreck of the luxury superyacht Bayesian have now been confirmed, and include British technology tycoon Mike Lynch.

Also confirmed dead is Morgan Stanley chairman Jonathan Bloomer, his wife Judith Bloomer, Clifford Chance lawyer Christopher Morvillo and his wife Neda Morvillo, all of whom were aboard when the boat sank in a severe storm off the coast of Sicily.

Mr Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter Hannah remains missing, with search efforts resuming on Thursday morning and Salvatore Concina, the head of Sicily’s civil protection agency, saying it remained their “priority” to find her.

The 50-metre vessel sank as a fierce storm battered the area overnight, and was flying a British flag, according to ship-tracking site Marine Traffic.

Sicily yacht latest: Morgan Stanley chair and top lawyer confirmed as missing alongside tech tycoon Mike Lynch

What do we know about the missing people on the yacht?

Mike Lynch was among the six tourists who were initially missing after disaster struck. The British technology tycoon founded software giant Autonomy in 1996 and was made an OBE for services to enterprise in 2006. In June, he was cleared of conducting a massive fraud relating to a $11 billion (£8.64bn) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

One man, the yacht’s chef Recaldo Thomas, was the first person confirmed dead, after his body was discovered on Monday in the hours after the sinking.

Loved ones have paid tributes to Mr Thomas, a Canadian-born man who had been living in Antigua, on social media. One said: “Rest in Power big man. I don’t know what else to say except I love you, and I always will.” Another wrote: “Going to miss you so much Recaldo Thomas still finding this so hard to believe.”

It is understood that Mr Lynch had planned the superyacht cruise as a celebration with family, employees and lawyers who supported him during the decade-long trial.

Among the 15 survivors rescued from a lifeboat was Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares. Another survivor, Charlotte Golunski, 35, told Italian journalists how she saved her one-year-old daughter Sofia from drowning.

The ‘Bayesian’ sailing boat

She told La Repubblica she lost Sofia for “two seconds”, adding: “I held her afloat with all my strength, my arms stretched upwards to keep her from drowning. It was all dark. In the water I couldn’t keep my eyes open. I screamed for help but all I could hear around me was the screams of others.”

According to her LinkedIn profile, Ms Golunski is a partner at Mr Lynch’s firm, called Invoke Capital.

Charlotte, Sofia and Charlotte’s husband, James have now been discharged from hospital.

Ayla Reynold, from New Zealand, working at Clifford Chance, also survived the horror with her partner. Her father Lin Ronald confirmed to The Telegraph she had been invited aboard as thanks for assistance in Mr Lynch’s recent court case. He said that his daughter had not given many details about what happened, but said: “There are deaths and she and her partner are alive.”

Two more survivors have also been named as Leah Randall and Katja Chicken. They are both reportedly South African and worked as crew members on the Bayesian.

Where did the yacht sink?

The luxury yacht sunk off the coast of the Sicilian capital of Palermo in Italy.

The 56-metre-long sailboat sank with 22 people on board shortly before sunrise, the Italian coast guard said in a statement.

Map showing where superyacht sank off Sicily

“The wind was very strong. Bad weather was expected, but not of this magnitude,” a coast guard official in Palermo told Reuters.

Storms and heavy rainfall have swept down Italy in recent days – with floods and landslides causing major damage in the north of the country – after weeks of scorching heat.

The boat left the Sicilian port of Milazzo on 14 August and was last tracked east of Palermo on Sunday evening, with a navigation status of "at anchor", according to vessel tracking app Vesselfinder.

The Bayesian superyacht

The luxury boat, which had been cruising along the Italian coastline, was owned by Revtom, a company registered to Mr Lynch’s wife Angela Bacares, which is based on the Isle of Man.

The Bayesian is 56 metres long, according to VesselFinder.

The superyacht can accommodate up to 12 guests in six suites and is listed for rent for up to 195,000 euros (£166,000) a week.

Bayesian completed several sailings in recent days, calling at various ports in Sicily.

Formerly known as Salute, or health in Italian, its 75-metre mast is the tallest aluminium mast in the world, Italian shipbuilder Perini said on its website.

The route of the Bayeasian yacht took in its final hours before the storm

Perini constructed the boat in 2008 and it was last refitted in 2020 and was managed by yachting company Camper & Nicholsons.

Camper and Nicholsons International, confirmed to  The Independent  that the Bayesian sailing yacht “encountered severe weather and subsequently sank”.

What do we know about the search

Body bags were seen being taken to the port of Porticello on Wednesday afternoon and Thursday morning.

Mr Concina said there will be an investigation in due course, but the priority is finding the missing teenager.

As the body bags were taken back to the port, dozens of emergency services staff were waiting, and one bag was seen being put in the back of an ambulance.

Inspections of the yacht's internal hull took place on Wednesday morning after divers succeeded in smashing through a glass window to enter it amid a reportedly difficult search operation.

Five bodies were found in the wreck of the sunken Bayesian yacht on Wednesday

A helicopter was drafted in to help the search effort as divers from the local fire service entered the water with torches attached to their headgear. A police boat and divers also entered the water on Wednesday afternoon.

Fire crews said they had been accessing the vessel through natural entrances, without making openings. Remotely controlled underwater vehicles have been used, with naval units and cave divers also taking part in the search, the coastguard said.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) also arrived in Porticello to look at the site of the sinking. The MAIB is looking into what happened because the Bayesian was flying a British flag, it is understood. The Italian Coastguard said the MAIB is not involved in the search for the missing people, and that it has not been requested to assist.

Body of British tech entrepreneur Lynch retrieved from yacht, daughter missing

By Giselda Vagnoni and Guglielmo Mangiapane

PORTICELLO, Italy (Reuters) -The body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch was retrieved on Thursday from the wreck of his family yacht that sank this week off the coast of Sicily during a violent storm, a senior Italian official said.

Lynch's 18-year-old daughter Hannah is still unaccounted for, interior ministry official Massimo Mariani told Reuters after being briefed by the emergency services.

The British-flagged Bayesian, a 56-metre-long (184-foot) superyacht carrying 22 passengers and crew, was anchored off the port of Porticello, near Palermo, when it disappeared beneath the waves in minutes after bad weather struck early Monday.

Lynch, 59, was one of the UK's best-known tech entrepreneurs and had invited friends to join him on the yacht to celebrate his acquittal in June in a U.S. fraud trial.

Seven people are believed to have died in the disaster while 15 survived, including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares, who is the owner of the Bayesian.

Italian officials confirmed they had retrieved on Wednesday the bodies of Jonathan Bloomer, a non-executive chair of Morgan Stanley International, and Christopher Morvillo of the law firm Clifford Chance, alongside their wives, Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvillo.

The body of the onboard chef, Canadian-Antiguan national Recaldo Thomas, was recovered near the wreck on Monday.

Mariani said it was possible that Hannah Lynch's body was not in the boat, but might have been swept out to sea.

Fire brigade spokesperson Luca Cari said if her body was still in the yacht it could take time to find, given the difficulty divers were having in accessing all areas of the boat, which is lying on its side at a depth of 50 metres (165 feet).

A judicial investigation has been opened into the disaster, which has baffled naval marine experts, who say a boat like the Bayesian, built by Italian high-end yacht manufacturer Perini, should have withstood the storm.

Giovanni Costantino, CEO of the Italian Sea Group, which owns Perini, told Italian media the Bayesian was "one of the safest boats in the world" and blamed the crew for failing to follow correct safety procedures.

The captain, James Cutfield, and his eight surviving crew members, have made no public comment on the disaster. The prosecutor leading the investigation, Ambrogio Cartosio, has scheduled a press conference for Saturday.

CHALLENGING CONDITIONS

Specialist rescuers have been searching inside the hull of the sunken yacht for the past three days in what they said were extremely challenging conditions due to the depth and the narrowness of the places that the divers are scouring.

The fire brigade compared the efforts to those that were carried out, on a larger scale, for the Costa Concordia, a luxury cruise liner that capsized off the Italian island of Giglio in January 2012, killing 32 people.

Once the final body is recovered, experts will have to decide whether, or how, to salvage the vessel.

The CEO of Italian Sea Group said the yacht's automatic tracking system suggested that it took 16 minutes from the moment the storm first hit to the sinking.

He said it was clear the ship took in large amounts of water, adding that investigators would need to see what doorways or hatches might have been left open, focusing notably on a main door located on the left side of the yacht.

"A Perini boat survived the Category 5 Katrina hurricane. Do you think one couldn't survive a waterspout here," he told Corriere della Sera newspaper, referring to a type of tornado which is believed to have hit the Bayesian.

Under maritime law, a captain has full responsibility for the ship and the crew, as well as the safety of all those aboard.

The captain of the Costa Concordia, Francesco Schettino, is serving a 16-year prison term for his role in the 2012 disaster after he admitted to sailing too close to underwater rocks.

One woman remains missing. She has not been identified, but Hannah Lynch, Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, is reportedly unaccounted for. The family had been celebrating his recent acquittal on fraud charges with the people who defended him at trial in the United States.

Five others were recovered by rescue crews following Monday’s tragedy.

The Bayesian, a 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early Monday as it was moored about a kilometer (half a mile) offshore. Civil protection officials said they believe the ship was struck by a tornado over the water, known as a waterspout, and sank quickly.

Termini Imerese Public Prosecutor’s Office investigators were collecting evidence for a criminal investigation, which they opened immediately after the tragedy despite no formal suspects having been publicly identified.

The chief executive of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the Bayesian’s manufacturer, told the AP in an interview on Thursday that superyachts like these are “designed to be unsinkable.”

“And it is unsinkable not only because it is designed in this way, but also because it is a sailing ship and sailing ships are the safest ever,” CEO Giovanni Costantino said.

Costantino added that “obviously they must not hit the rocks violently, discarding the hull, and they must not take in water,” suggesting the second possibility was the most likely in this case.

Costantino also noted that sailing ships require “a greater competence” to be guided compared with motor boats.

Investigators are now looking at why the Bayesian, built in 2008 by Italian shipyard Perini Navi, sank while a nearby sailboat remained largely unscathed. Fifteen of the 22 people aboard survived by escaping in a lifeboat, including a mother who reported holding her 1-year-old baby over the waves to save her. They were rescued by the sailboat Sir Robert Baden Powell.

The sailboat’s captain, Karsten Borner, said his craft sustained minimal damage — the frame of a sun awning broke — even with winds that he estimated had reached 12 on the Beaufort wind scale, the highest hurricane-strength force on the scale.

He said he had remained anchored with his engines running to try to maintain the ship’s position as the forecast storm rolled in.

“Another possibility is to heave anchor before the storm and to run downwind at open sea,” Borner said in a text message. But he said that might not have been possible for the Bayesian, given its 75-meter (246-foot) tall mast.

“If there was a stability problem, caused by the extremely tall mast, it would not have been better at open sea,” he said.

Yachts like the Bayesian are required to have watertight compartments that are specifically designed to prevent a rapid, catastrophic sinking even when some parts fill with water.

Lynch is the only person confirmed dead; the other bodies have not been formally identified by the Italian coast guard.

Besides Hannah Lynch, those missing are Christopher Morvillo, one of Lynch’s U.S. lawyers, and his wife, Neda; Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley’s London-based investment banking subsidiary, and his wife, Judy.

Friends of Thomas, best known as “Rick,” paid tribute to him on Thursday at a favorite bar in the Caribbean Island of Antigua. Cooking for Lynch was supposed to be one of Thomas’ last jobs before retiring, his cousin, David Isaac, told the AP.

Divers have struggled to find the bodies in the yacht’s hull on the seabed 50 meters (164 feet) underwater.

“We would need a crystal ball to know when we’ll be able to find the next body,” said Luca Cari, spokesperson for the fire rescue service.

“It’s very difficult to move inside the wreckage. Moving just one meter can take up to 24 hours,” Cari said.
