The start of the Bayview Mackinac race, the 100th consecutive running of the race up Lake Huron from Port Huron to Mackinac Island on Saturday, July 20, 2024, was delayed a bit by lack of wind, but what was scheduled to be a record number of participants — 332 boats, from 17 different states, were scheduled to depart from the starting line in southern Lake Huron, breaking the record of 315 from 1985 — headed off to the finish line between Mackinac and Round islands.
The race was scheduled to run on the original 1925 course, rather than the Cove Island or Shore courses that it has followed for many years.

MACKINAC ISLAND, MI - The waters off Mackinac Island serve as the finish line for two big sailboat races each summer. But this weekend, Mackinac also gets to morph into a hometown cheering section for an all-island crew that’s competing in the Bayview Mackinac Race.
In an inspired move by the island’s fire chief, Jason St. Onge, he worked with several islanders to rally a team to join the record number of boats competing in the 100th running of this iconic race.
And because this is an island story, of course there’s a neat historic twist or two. This year, the Bayview Mackinac Race will be running on the original 1925 course. And the all-island crew will be skippered by Bart Huthwaite Jr. Race lovers know that Huthwaite’s late father is the man who helped find and restore the Bernida - the sleek wooden sloop that won the very first Bayview Mackinac Race in 1925. After the 32-foot boat faded from view for decades, the elder Huthwaite bought the Bernida and hired out the deep restoration work. In 2012, the resurrected Bernida again won the race.
So there could be all kinds of kismet going on later today when the all-Mackinac crew starts the race aboard Rascal, a Catalina 34 MKII.
Huthwaite Jr. is treasurer of the Mackinac Island Yacht Club (MIYC). His son, Chaz, and St. Onge will be joined on Rascal by the island’s grocery store owner, Andrew Doud, as well as past MIYC Commodore Mike Gidley and current Rear Commodore Mike Hegarty.
St. Onge said islanders are typically so busy prepping to welcome all the Bayview Mackinac and Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac crews each summer that they typically don’t have time to even think about tossing their own hats into the racing pool.
“I owned a sailboat for many years, but due to the busy nature of the island during the races, I was never able to race big races,” St. Onge said. “However, a few years ago when I realized the 100th was on the horizon, the idea came to organize an all-island crew to come up the big lake. Not sure what we’ll place, I know we’ll have one heck of a cheering section on the island!”
Gidley, who has been part of the island community for more than three decades, said getting the crew assembled took some work. “Heck yes, the thought of an all-island-crewed boat in the 100th race, that was a no-brainer, but a lot of folks here do not race sailboats. They take care of everyone once the boats arrive.”
Huthwaite said this race aboard Rascal has a particularly deep meaning for him, as his son is part of the crew. He said he’s glad St. Onge “twisted our arms” to get the boat entered in the race as an all-island team.
“Our Team Mackinac crew is based on the island and while we don’t believe we can muster a win like the crew on Bernida did, we are going to be a part of history nonetheless.”

The Bayview Mackinac Race has 332 boats registered in this weekend’s event - a record number that’s fitting for a race celebrating its century mark. It’s considered one of the longest annual freshwater yacht racing events in the world.
As a nod to the race’s impressive history, boat crews will be competing on the original course mapped out for the first Bayview Mackinac Race in 1925. It stretches 235 miles up the Lake Huron coast.
This means all the racing yachts will start in southern Lake Huron, then head north and west before making the turn toward Mackinac. The boats will pass south of Bois Blanc Island before crossing the finish line that sits between Round Island and Mackinac Island.
And once the Rascal’s crew rounds that curve for home, there’s no doubt there will be a huge hometown crowd cheering it to the finish line, said Liz Ware, vice president of sales and marking for her family’s Mission Point Resort, which hosts all the racing teams for the awards ceremony on the resort’s Great Lawn.
“When Mike Hegarty told me there was going to be an all-island entry in the race, I simply said, how can we help support?,” Ware said. “We love hosting the awards party on the Great Lawn, the friends and comraderies of the sailing community, and of course, we love the island. Supporting Team Mackinac in the 100th Bayview Yacht Club’s Race to Mackinac is icing on the cake.”
Hegarty said St. Onge’s idea of an all-island crew for the race’s big anniversary was something he couldn’t pass up.
“We’ve all known each other for a long time and that is what is so special about sailing: the friends and memories you make along the way. This trip is going to be epic for all of us on Rascal, epic.”
To track Rascal and all the Bayview Mackinac Race boats, use the race tracker here.
Boats from 17 states and Canada are set to participate in what is one of the longest-running freshwater yacht races in the world. The first group of boats is set to hit the starting line at 11:30 a.m.
“Anyone up the Thumb coast of Lake Huron should be in for quite a show as the entire fleet sails up to Mackinac, and if there is a downwind blowing and spinnakers unfurled it will be a spectacular view from the shore,” said Charlie Trost, race chair for the 2024 Bayview Mackinac.
Want to get in on the fun? Like Trost said, the Lake Huron shoreline will be a good spot for race spectators to catch a glimpse of these sleek and speedy boats. You can use the race tracker here to see where the fleet is situated.
You can also dress like a fan with the new limited-edition sailing T-shirts featuring Peanuts characters like Snoopy and Woodstock. You can find those shirts and other race gear at the Bayview Mackinac Race online store.
Once the boats reach Mackinac Island, it’s party time.
The Bayview Mackinac Race follows exactly a week behind the Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac, which this year saw a fast course, heavy storms on Lake Michigan, a man overboard rescue , and a new record set.
Want to know more about the Bernida and see her up close? The elegant sloop now is home-ported at the Michigan Maritime Museum in South Haven.

2024 Bayview Mackinac Race Breaks Record for Number of Boats, Sailors
The Bayview Yacht Club in Detroit announced a record number of boats and sailors are registered to participate in the 100th running of the Bayview Mackinac Race Presented by National Fleet Services on July 20.
As of May 6, there are 332 sailboats registered which breaks the record of 316 set in 1985. Boats from 16 states and Canada are scheduled to participate. The registration deadline is June 1.
“This growth in participation speaks volumes about the enduring appeal and significance of the sport of sailing and the race,” says Michael Helm, 2024 Bayview Yacht Club Commodore. “While we anticipated an increase in the number of participants for our 100th, I attribute the immense response to a broader trend of people seeking outdoor activities and embracing the natural beauty that Michigan has to offer.”
BYC, located on Detroit’s east side, has hosted the annual sailing event since 1925. As previously announced, National Fleet Services is signed as the event’s presenting sponsor and is joined by several new sponsors including:
- Deep Eddy- the race’s official vodka and hard seltzer.
- Detroit Liquid Ventures- which includes Old Head Beer, the race’s official beer; FUL non-alcohol beer and energy drinks; Blu Dot Farm & Vineyard; and canned Bloody Mary.
- Casamigos Tequila- Sponsor of the official 100th Bayview Mackinac Race hat, distributed to each participating sailor in the 2024 race.
- Goat Yard Marine- Sponsor of the annual Skipper Bag gift, distributed to each of the skippers in recognition of their leadership.
- Detroit City Distillery- The race’s official whiskey and bourbon. The partnership includes the production of a special “Commodore’s Select” bourbon, crafted exclusively for the membership of Bayview Yacht Club.
“Our sponsors are vitally important to everything we do, not only for the financial stability of this and future races, but we are looking for experiential opportunities surrounding the event for participants’ and fans’ enjoyment,” says Charlie Trost, chair of the 2024 Bayview Mackinac Race.
All the new sponsors have signed multi-year agreements and will participate in additional events at BYC including The Detroit Cup and Women on the Water regattas.
“It is exciting for Detroit Liquid Ventures and our list of growing brands to continue to build our relationship with Bayview Yacht Club and its sailing events, including the historic race,” says Mark Rieth, owner of Detroit Liquid Ventures.
“In 2022, were able to introduce FUL energy drink and NA beer to race fans, and this year we continue to expand our offerings. We are proud to add some new Michigan brands, such as Old Head Beer and Blue Dot Farm and Vineyards to our partnership.”

3rd annual charity cardboard boat race to take place at Lake Sam Rayburn
ANGELINA COUNTY, Texas (KTRE) - The Great Sam Rayburn Cardboard Boat Regatta will take place Saturday to celebrate Labor Day and raise money for charity.
The funds raised will go to charity organizations including the 2024 Lake Area Toys for Tots campaign.
Event organizer Terry Sympson said he expects a few hundred people, welcoming all ages to race the boats.
“Last year we had a 70-year-old man out there paddling and doing a good job,” Sympson said. “It’s a lot of kids; it’s a lot of fun.”
The team has several boats already prepared including one shaped and painted like a watermelon slice and another like a bed.
“Some of the boats stay up for a little while,” Sympson said. “Some of them stay up for longer than you might think.
We try to get them out there and have a good time until they’re all sunk.”
Individuals can also build and enter their own boat for $25.
Activities will begin at 10 a.m. at Jackson Hill Park and Marina.

Third annual Great Sam Rayburn Cardboard Boat Regatta to take place this weekend
BROADDUS, Texas (KTRE) - The third annual great Sam Rayburn Cardboard Boat Regatta will be Saturday, August 26, and competitors are putting together the final touches on their boats for the events.
Making first place in a cardboard boat race while keeping afloat will be the goal.
“We started it three years ago and it’s grown every year. We want to bring back the holiday tradition of coming out to the lake on Labor Day and just having some fun,” Terry Sympson, one of the event’s organizers said.
He said so far there are about 20 boat entries and a few sponsored boats that will be seen in the water. He mentioned one boat to watch for.
“Our windows into the history from San Augustine,” Sympson said.
Displayed on the windows of downtown are 20 different historical events that represent San Augustine. They are advertising the concept on a boat.
“So, it’s just an opportunity to make people aware of what we do here in San Augustine County,” Sympson said.
The boat regatta event will have a pet costume contest, watermelon eating contest and an opportunity for kids who aren’t racing to experience a cardboard boat in the water.
“I think the people here in Broaddus, we forget to take advantage of the lake in our backyard. It offers a lot to our community and surrounding areas,” Cathie Bennett, one of the boat builders, said.
It isn’t just about the boats. Proceeds from the event will help fund Outdoor Freedom Network’s Toys for Tots program.
“We cover three counties in the lake area communities, and we distribute over 5000 toys to approximately 2,500 children,” Sympson said.
There is still time to build and enter your boat. It has to be made only of carboard and tape should only cover the seams. Boats can be entered until the start of the race for $25.
The event will start at 10 a.m. at the Jackson Hill Park and Marina in Broaddus. The entry fee is two dollars per person and children 10 and under are free.

Community rallies to save 'iconic' boat damaged in Tasmania's wild weather

Several days of damaging winds in Tasmania have battered an "iconic" sailing boat that has been moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs for nearly five decades.
On Thursday, locals sprang to help move the "little blue boat" out of the water. Its mast has snapped, but it's out of immediate danger.
What's next?
New owner Darren Pearson says he will find out over the weekend whether the boat is salvageable and can be returned to its mooring at Montrose Bay.
For almost 50 years the little blue boat moored on the River Derwent in Hobart's northern suburbs has been an immovable part of the landscape.
Sea Breeze was built by Robin Attrill in the early 1970s and stayed in his ownership until earlier this year. The boat has changed hands, but remains prominently moored in Montrose Bay.
But after several days of damaging winds , many feared the boat would be completely destroyed.
Its new owner Darren Pearson put out a call for help and received an outpouring of responses.
Mr Pearson said the boat was filling up with water and taking damage from rocks under the water. ( ABC News/Georgie Burgess )
Mooring broken by 'force of mother nature'
Mr Pearson said that while the mooring was only two-and-a-half years old, it wasn't strong enough to withstand extreme winds.
"It had a massive chain, but it has broken very low in the chain. I think it's just the force of mother nature there," he said.
He feared the boat wouldn't be salvageable when he first saw it smashing up against the boardwalk and rocks under the water.
Footage of the boat weathering the winds was circulated widely on social media, with many expressing concern over its condition.
One user wrote, "so devastating. It's a piece of Hobart history".
Another shared, "I hope they can save the boat. It has been there for my whole life, weird if it is no longer out there."
Race to save iconic fixture
Mr Pearson and his family called on the community for help, fearing the boat would be irreparable if left in the bay for much longer.
On Thursday afternoon, a brief window where the wind settled presented an opportunity for locals to spring into action to haul the boat out of the water.
A team from Total Dive Solutions, along with other members of the community, volunteered to help save the boat. ( Supplied: Total Dive Solutions )
Ethan O'Neil was part of the salvage operation led by Hobart's Total Dive Solutions. He said the boat was in better condition than feared.
"It actually wasn't too bad, considering. The actual hull is pretty fine, the keel is a bit busted up from bouncing on the rocks," he said.
While the rescue was mostly smooth sailing, Mr O'Neil said the mast snapped along the way to the boat ramp, likely caused by water damage.
The boat was pulled from the water and towed to the owner's house. ( Supplied: Total Dive Solutions )
Mr O'Neil said he hoped to see the boat restored and back in Montrose Bay.
"It's a Tassie icon. It's like the Cartela."
What's next for the Montrose stalwart?
On Friday, Mr Pearson said the boat had been successfully hauled onto land near New Town Bay and he would find out over the weekend whether it was salvageable.
He said the boat was "not too badly damaged" from what he was able to inspect.
"We've got to pull it over to the other side," he said.
"One side's looking good, but we won't know [until we turn it over]. It's leaning on the side that it's actually leaking back out of," he said.
"Water, where it leaked in, it leaked out."
Mr Pearson said he would be grateful to any shipwright willing to volunteer their time to look over the boat, as the salvage bills were racking up
"It's a warning to anyone that a boat in the water is a hole in the pocket," he said.
If all goes well, Mr Pearson hopes to repair the boat and its mooring, and return it to its spot in Montrose Bay.
