Trimaran Inactive -- Corsair F28R (Texas)

f28 catamaran

S/V First Tri is a 1998 Corsair F28R trimaran, for sale by owner.

First Tri comes with a trailer, Honda 9.9 HP engine, two mains: 1 mylar and 1 dacron, three jibs: 1 mylar and 2 dacron, spinnaker, and furling screecher. The interior has a propane stove and sink. Plumbed for a marine head, but I removed it and installed a porta-potty.

With the exception of a couple of trips to Destin Florida, she has been sailed exclusively in fresh water lakes.

Story of a Corsair F28r

f28 catamaran

  • Add to quote

I have been meeting people that have these types of boats online, and everyone have been so nice and excited! We were in Lake Erie near downtown Cleavland we meet these nice folks at their yacht club, it was blown 18knt + when we went out. Know it has been 10 years since I have biueen on lake Erie in these conditions. We started to put the Main sail up and it must have taken 10 minutes it seemed! It was a big sail it was so beautiful to see it up close! It was massive! Maybe it was just me b ut the Mainsail is 321 sq ft it looked big. The wind picked up we suddenly were up to 12 knots going to weather! We feel off a little and the knot just started going up. Soon we were at 18, 19 knts, what a ride this person was showing me what the boat could do, and I picked the perfect day! it was soooo fast I have never felt this before , it was amazing and a great ride the boat would just pick up speed and thats all it was doing he would show me how to slow it down and that is what we were doing, the wind was picking up more and I think it was up to 30knts the water was turning green, and I know that is serious.

f28 catamaran

You got that right. Fun, fast and not for sea duty. Remember the guy a few months back who went over in a C31 off new jersey in moderate conditions and was found by the CG in his survival suit on the upside down hull? Quite a ride though...he almost made the complete round trip to the BVI's & back with a strategy of out-running the bad weather and only going when he had a geat weather forecast.

Yes I do see that so what does a man like me look at? This boat was screaming I did enjoy the speed! Yes we got wet, but I really did not mind that either. So what do i do about the inside? I really want a boat like this it handled this weather well enough to stay out and sail in it. Most of the monohulls were headed back in! Where can I get a ride on your style at? not a lot of people own those either? I know it was blown near 30knts.

Well this guy says he had it up to 42 knots in Canada ! I don't know what C31 guy was doing but it must have been wrong! We will never know the whole story! I am in Pittsburgh and will travel to lake Erie!

Sailingdog which person are u on these videos? And what is the history of Telstar?

Hmm... I am the only short balding guy in the videos... usually wearing a Tilley Hat. The Telstar 28 was designed by Tony Smith and announced in late 2003. The boat's hull design are partially based on those of the Gemini 105Mc catamaran, as is the centerboard mechanism and rudder mechanism. This is the third boat in the Telstar line, as it was preceded by the Telstar 26, of which there were about 300 made, and the Telstar 35, of which there were several dozen made IIRC. The previous Telstars were mostly built in England, but I think a few were made in the USA prior to the factory fire that nearly wiped out the company, and led to the development of the Gemini catamarans. The folding system on the Telstar is completely different from those of previous folding trimarans. Unlike that of the Corsair, it is a tool-less folding system, which, IIRC, uses four bolts on each side and a wrench. The Telstar uses two line clutches on each side to lock the amas and nets. The amas on the Telstar are also very unlikely to retract, even if you forget to lock them in the open position. They need to move forward to retract...and if the boat is under sail, that isn't going to happen. They also need to submerge about four inches in order to retract, so the buoyancy of the ama tends to keep it deployed, even if the boat isn't moving. Once the line clutch is locked, the amas are pretty much going to stay out no matter the conditions. The mast-raising system on the Telstar is also rather unique. It doesn't require the trailer winch, like the one the Corsairs use, and allows you to lower or raise the mast on the water or on the trailer. It also allows you to reverse the process at any point or stop the process and leave the mast in a partially lowered position by cleating off the mast raising line. There's a video of it at the Telstar website. It was also designed specifically as a cruiser, not a sport trimaran. Unlike the Corsair 28, it has a full marine head, two sinks, a holding tank, a propane stove, standing headroom, and an option for a refrigerator. The Corsair 28 generally comes with a portapottie and a camping stove. In terms of performance, it isn't generally as fast as a Corsair 28 or 31, but it has almost as much cabin space as a Corsair 31. It can easily do ten-to-twelve knots. I've had mine up to 15 knots, and generally sail her at 9+ knots. The Telstar is a much drier boat to sail than either Corsair due to the major difference in ama design. The Telstar amas have an inboard hard deck, which is about 18-20" wide. This deck appears to block most of the spray coming off the side of the ama that would end up in the cockpit on a Corsair. The amas also have a foot-high bulwark formed by the outer side of the ama along this deck, meaning that it is far safer to walk along the amas or nets than on a Corsair, which has a rounded top to the ama and much wider nets with no outboard bulwark or life lines. The bulwark is so effective that we generally don't even install the lifelines and stanchions that come with the Telstar. The Quorning Dragonflies are beautifully made boats, but much more expensive than the Telstar without really offering much in the way of performance or accommodations. The folding system on the Quornings also leaves a bit to be desired, as the amas swing aft, rather than tuck under the main hull. This means that you have to pay for a longer slip if you're storing the boat in a slip. I hope that helps.

so where can I ride on one of these at?

Well there is always more to a story I found this and it looks pretty good! Farrier Marine

re corsairs,it is no problem lowering the mast on the water,I did it last week.then we motored round to the boat ramp, folded the pontoons (about 5 mins),backed the trailer and loaded the boat.Very straight forward.

Hatrick- Exactly how did you lower the mast on the water. All of the corsairs I've seen thus far use the trailer winch to lower the mast. I know the mast lowering process on the Corsair can't be as simple as the one on the Telstar 28. I've seen and heard about too many dropped masts on Corsairs for that to be the case. Imasonofasailor- Be aware that Farrier is no longer associated with Corsair marine for many reasons, much having to do with their unwillingness to follow his strict QC control procedures.

Lowering the mast on the water only requires putting a block up on the bow. Rather than running a line to the winch on the trailer the line gets run through the block on the bow back to one of the winches on the boat. Not a problem at all. The Corsair 28 tends to be more of a racer. As Sailingdog mentioned it does not have standing headroom and many have a very stripped, bare-bones interior. That boat does have a decent sized one design racing fleet. The Corsair 31 is a little more appropriate for cruising (they even have a UC - Ultimate Cruiser model which I think gives you running hot water). The 31 probably has about 6'2" of standing headroom (going by memory- I'm 6'2 and didn't have a problem standing in the main area). Ours had an enclosed head with holding tank and an Origo Alcohol stove. The folding system does have a bolt at the end of each beam to secure it, although I think the geometry of the 28's folding system may not require it- you'd have to check for sure. Securing the bolt was never a big deal- you should check one out- Ian Farrier's folding system is truly remarkable. Farrier designed trimarans (corsairs included) have a very active yahoo group which is fantastic for support and information. It is called "f-boats" and the email address is f-boats(at)yahoogroups(dot)com. We had a Corsair 31 for a couple of years and loved the boat. Sailing in the Florida Keys once on the bay side we were on a broad reach in 15 kts of wind with nearly glassy water. Easily averaging 15 knots I think the highest speed we saw was 18 kts. Sailing like that really doesn't get any better. The accomodations though are a bit tight and not luxurious, but if it is sailing performance you are after these boats can't be beat. Steve

Corsair F-28

The F-28 test took us to Saint-Malo (Brittany, France), where we met Guy Albaret, director of La Landriais Marines Services shipyard, which imports the Corsair trimaran line into France. The F-24, F-31, and now the F-28, designed by Ian Farrier, are made near San Diego, California. We may find ourselves, along the French coastlines, crossing, or perhaps being passed by one of the 35 Corsair F-series trimarans sailing there regularly

A Real Trailerable Multihull

In fact, the F-28's true role is to succeed the F-27, 450 of which were built. At first glance, you might not necessarily spot the difference with respect to any other sports cruising trimaran. There is nothing in the boat’s general appearance to suggest it is a trailerable folding trimaran. A closer look and a demonstration shows that it takes one person alone little more than 2 minutes to fold both cross arms holding the amas, almost effortlessly, so that the F-28 can be trailered easily. Three steps prepare an F-28 for trailering: 1. Releasing the shrouds through a lever system at the base of each shroud 2. Disconnecting the four lock bolts on the cross arms 3. Raising the cross-beams to fold the amas against the hulls very easily thanks to a patented system The side trampolines move with the amas to come alongside the central hull. This is a really surprising operation, except for those already familiar with Corsair trimarans. The F-24, F-27 and F-31 have been using this mechanism for ten years now. This goes to show the reliability, robustness and functionality of the folding system. Consequently, this is a 6 meters wide trimaran tha...

The next Trimaran Sailing Clinic hosted by Windcraft will be at the Fort Walton Yacht Club in the Florida Panhandle May 5-7, 2017. However we are completely fully booked up for that clinic. The next one with spaces available will be the weekend of October 14-15. In our clinics 16 students will see their sailing skills improve dramatically over the two days of the course which is taught by world class multihull sailor and coach Randy Smyth. Students of all levels are introduced to Randy’s highly effective techniques for optimizing sail trim, and learn how best to hoist, jibe and douse a spinnaker, as well as how to tack a screacher upwind. Corsair Marine kicked off 1997 by entering production with a brand new model in its line of folding trailerable trimarans. The Corsair 28 (shown here) and Corsair 28R are now the the mid-range mainstay of Corsair, which also produces the Corsair 24 Mk.II and several models of the Corsair 31 trimarans. The new Corsair 28 models have superceded the famous F-27, which enjoyed an 11-year production run at Corsair.

In 2000 Corsair Marine introduced the 28′ Center Cockpit model. Click here for all the details on this exciting trimaran.

The Corsair 28, like all of its predecessors and current sisters, is an easily trailerable sport boat because of its light weight and low profile on the trailer. Here the mast has been raised and final preparations are being made to launch the boat. As with other Corsair trimarans, the transition from trailering to sailing only takes about 30 minutes.

The Corsair 28 and Corsair 28R have roomy, functional interiors with all the necessary amenities for comfortable overnight cruising. There are sleeping accommodations for four, galley area with 2-burner stove, stainless steel sink, fresh water tank and pump, and a marine head with privacy curtain and a holding tank. Seat/bunk cushions are standard and are available in over 40 colors and patterns, or may be covered with customer-supplied fabrics as desired.

Ready for Launch

First Photos Under Sail

The standard Corsair 28 under sail during its sea trial in early ’97. Sails offered by Corsair are mylar-based “Tape Drive” sails by UK Sailmakers. These feature a Technora scrim and a system of Polyester and Kevlar tapes arrayed along the natural lines of stress in the sail material. This Corsair 28 has an aluminum rotating mast supplied by Ballanger Spar Systems of Santa Cruz, California. The masthead is approximately 37 feet above the deck. (In this photo it appears to be proportionally shorter than normal because of the wide angle lens that was employed in taking this photograph.) The Corsair 28R (race version) has a carbon fiber rotating mast that is 1-1/2 feet taller than the standard version. The carbon mast has an airfoil shaped cross section and is supplied by the Omohundro Company of Minden, Nevada. Both versions feature a roller furling/reefing boom, which has proved very popular on earlier Corsair trimarans such as the F-27. Beyond the choice of masts, Corsair 28s and Corsair 28Rs are identical in all respects.

Fast and Easy Under Sail

The new Corsair 28R with carbon fiber rotating mast punches effortlessly through choppy seas at over 14 knots with main and jib alone while sailing nearly level.

Folding is Easy

Once in the water, folding the floats is quick and easy. It only takes a minute or two and is managed readily by one person. The nets tension themselves automatically as the floats are unfolded. No other adjustments are required. Notice the kick up rudder blade in the vertical position. The mainsail is rolled on the roller furling boom and is ready for hoisting.

Additional Details

Manufacturer Provided Description

The F-28 sport cruiser is a versatile, trailerable trimaran that offers both cruising comfort and performance excitement. Sail Magazine’s 25th Anniversary poll of 24 notable yacht designers named it among the eight most significant sailboat designs of the past quarter century. The F-28 is a worthy successor to the F-27 and retains its best features while introducing many exciting improvements. The F-28 sport cruiser is perfect for sailors who like performance and fun, but who also require a family-friendly practical boat with a large cockpit and a roomy cabin that is suitable for cruising. Like other Corsairs, the F-28 can sail rather fast, even exceeding 20 knots. Cruisers will appreciate how the easily sustained high averages of the F-28 will bring new destinations within range - and make the return to home port quick, safe, and comfortable. The interior layout is functional and spacious. Berths include a large double forward, individual settees / bunks on each side of the main cabin area, and a single bunk or stowage area under the cockpit. The comfortable wing nets are ideal places to relax and sunbathe while the water zips by below. The aft-cockpit with sturdy pushpit railings gives everyone plenty of room and a good sense of security as well. The F-28’s single-spreader rotating aluminum mast and the square-top fully-battened mainsail and roller furling jib form a very efficient combination that is faster than similar size fixed rigs, but with improved safety margins and easier handling. The F-28 features a roller furling boom for quick mainsail reefing and furling.

Rig and Sails

Auxilary power, accomodations, calculations.

The theoretical maximum speed that a displacement hull can move efficiently through the water is determined by it's waterline length and displacement. It may be unable to reach this speed if the boat is underpowered or heavily loaded, though it may exceed this speed given enough power. Read more.

Classic hull speed formula:

Hull Speed = 1.34 x √LWL

Max Speed/Length ratio = 8.26 ÷ Displacement/Length ratio .311 Hull Speed = Max Speed/Length ratio x √LWL

Sail Area / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the power of the sails relative to the weight of the boat. The higher the number, the higher the performance, but the harder the boat will be to handle. This ratio is a "non-dimensional" value that facilitates comparisons between boats of different types and sizes. Read more.

SA/D = SA ÷ (D ÷ 64) 2/3

  • SA : Sail area in square feet, derived by adding the mainsail area to 100% of the foretriangle area (the lateral area above the deck between the mast and the forestay).
  • D : Displacement in pounds.

Ballast / Displacement Ratio

A measure of the stability of a boat's hull that suggests how well a monohull will stand up to its sails. The ballast displacement ratio indicates how much of the weight of a boat is placed for maximum stability against capsizing and is an indicator of stiffness and resistance to capsize.

Ballast / Displacement * 100

Displacement / Length Ratio

A measure of the weight of the boat relative to it's length at the waterline. The higher a boat’s D/L ratio, the more easily it will carry a load and the more comfortable its motion will be. The lower a boat's ratio is, the less power it takes to drive the boat to its nominal hull speed or beyond. Read more.

D/L = (D ÷ 2240) ÷ (0.01 x LWL)³

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds.
  • LWL: Waterline length in feet

Comfort Ratio

This ratio assess how quickly and abruptly a boat’s hull reacts to waves in a significant seaway, these being the elements of a boat’s motion most likely to cause seasickness. Read more.

Comfort ratio = D ÷ (.65 x (.7 LWL + .3 LOA) x Beam 1.33 )

  • D: Displacement of the boat in pounds
  • LOA: Length overall in feet
  • Beam: Width of boat at the widest point in feet

Capsize Screening Formula

This formula attempts to indicate whether a given boat might be too wide and light to readily right itself after being overturned in extreme conditions. Read more.

CSV = Beam ÷ ³√(D / 64)

The F-28, introduced in 1998, is similar but with a number of small updates including a rotating spar. (Renamed CORSAIR 28 in 2001.)

Folding System

Legendary ability, unbeatable reliability.

Folding and unfolding a Corsair trimaran takes only a minute. With just 4 bolts to remove, it is easily managed by one person, and is normally done while afloat. Simply raise (to fold) or press down (to unfold) the inboard end of one cross beam. It can be done from the safety of the cockpit and only a little force is needed due to the folding system’s carefully balanced geometry, and the movement of the floats being mostly horizontal.

The solid aluminium folding struts have absolute control over the folding motion and prevent flexing or racking. A stainless steel bolt on the inboard end of each beam secures the floats for sailing. Crucially, wingnets remain attached during the folding process – their frictionless fixing allows them to tension themselves appropriately through the folding process. The system is so simple and balanced that Corsair trimarans can even be folded while motoring.

TRAILERING ACROSS CONTINENTS

Corsair Marine trimarans are especially weight-conscious, and sit low on their trailers meaning they have excellent trailering characteristics. They are equally easy to launch, giving you more time on the water, and the ability to expore many more remote cruising grounds or participate in regattas far from home. Some Corsair trimaran models go from trailer to water in 25 minutes, and with practice even the largest boat models can be done in 40 minutes.

My friend has a 1999 World Cat that has a semi displacment hull. How does he F-26 compare and can it be repowered with 200 hp 4 strokes. I am steering towards the 265 express but like the ride of his cat

I like the look of them too, but I swear there were posts on here in past years about them and they suffer from the 'slap' of waves coming up between the hulls, which was common in early cats. Grady, instead of changing the hull design like other catamaran builders have since done, discontinued the model. So you should pprobably do a little more research. I'd love one too, but am happy w/ my 228.

Tigercat I thought a lot about buying a Tiger Cat. If you really want a cat hull buy the World Cat. Its what they do for a living and GW doesn't. Especially if you think you might sell the boat down the road. If you do decide to go with the Tiger Cat you have got to talk to some owners and get out on the water. There must be a few watching this thread.

Slightly off topic but what years were the tiger cat produced and anybody have any idea of how many were produced? Hijack over.

Going from memory, I recall that Grady changed the cat hull the same year that they added the center console to their cat line-up. It was 1999, I believe. My recollection is that the hull redesign cured some handling attributes of the earlier hull. I've always liked the layout of the F-26. I would want to try one if my in-out storage forklift could handle them.

Wahoo - I seem to remember from a previous thread here that the hull had indeed been changed as you said. IIRC posters on the thread said that the hull change cured much of the problems but by then the damage had been done in regard to sales and Grady pulled the plug. I have never seen one but would like to check out one of the post redesign models.

Crockers Marine (although they are out of business) has one in Wilmington NC. I think they have that and a couple of trailers left to sale.

Hello. My wife an I own a 1997 Tigercat an love her. They do have the hull slap and that is the only thing I don't like about her. We boat on the Chesapeake bay where you get a lot of chop and at slow speeds it does slap the bottom hard sometimes but you get used to it. Had it off OC Md this year in 4-6 foot and ran all the way back 55 miles at about 23knots sitting in the seat. Never experienced any kind of death roll. I think any cat would have a slap between the hulls in choppy water to some extent. I think people that bash the Tigercat probably have never even been on one they just hear what other people say and go off that. We have been very happy now for 5 years and until we can afford a 33 express we will keep loving our "Sunny Life" F26 Tigercat

I have had my 1998 f26 tiger for 7 years. Replaced the two stroke yamaha 200s with 4 stoke yamaha 200s I FIsh the otherside 147miles out with this boat year after year. extra weight helps, run this boat like your on two skies (stay on the back of the skis) HULL Slap Dont take waves head on at slow speed! Quarter them! This boat is not for an inexperienced captain it takes motor trim adjustments not tab adjustment to get the best ride on the ocean. I fish this boat hard and always talk with grady tech before doing something like a repower Yeah I would buy another in a heart beat, but this one still goes strong smooth and quiet

Do the 4-strokes perform that much better than the 200 OX66's?? I thought the 4-strokes were much more efficent, but performance wise, not quite as strong as the 2-strokes; with weight being a factor. You can buy a lot of oil and gas for what those thumpers cost. Unless of course, one of the old motors was blown up.

I HAVE GREAT ONE FOR SALE WITH 200HP 2 STROKE I have the best priced 26 tigercat on the market with 2- 200hp yamahas, loaded with electronics. Great boat but to big for me, I am looking for a 20' or 22' cc, will trade , see my add on yacht- world. They are a great boats, very fast and stable jdr2 [email protected] 631-283-2051

I love my f -26! I don't know what all the hubub is about these boats, this is my third and favorite Grady! I live in florida on the gulf coast and it's perfect for 2-4+ft chop if your running then anchoring up ( I dive so it's perfect for me) It has a shallow draft for a 26 ft boat, none of my V hull friends can keep up with me without getting pounded in a chop. It's by far the driest boat I've ever owned. I'm repowering it right now with 150 4 stroke Yamahas which weigh the same as the 200 2 strokes I took off. I'm hoping to get a liitle more distance out of the 200 gallons she carries for long keys runs but other than that it's a great boat. The down side of this ad all cats is that they're not good drift boats ,they don't corner like a V hull and the cabin while it has lots of storage it's a little awkward. It's a lot of boat for 26 ft though!

Tigercat: I'm curious, why aren't cats good drift boats? Tx, Rob

Being a F-26 wanna be, I heard the same thing. I believe it's called hull slap; the waves run through the tunnel and slap around and it's been said to drive you nuts. This needs to be confirmed by a real owner.

I HAVE GREAT ONE FOR SALE WITH 200HP 2 STROKES I have a 26' tigercat for sale, see yachtworld, 1998 w/2-200 asking $24,900. These boats are great, very fast, stable and will run in ALL weather. It was to big for my use so I went down to a 209 grady. Regards, john [email protected]

Crazy Snake

Hi, I'm new to this board. Just had to post my 2 cents worth. I owned a 1998 F-26 cat for three years. It rode great. It was too big for me to fish around the Hampton Roads area so I sold it and bought a 20' SeaHunt. I started missing the blue water so I sold the SeaHunt and upgraded to a 2004 G-W 283 Release with twin F225 Yamahas. My F26 was fully loaded including a Pompanette fighting chair. I purchased this boat from the retired Grady CEO, Wylie Corbett. It was given to him as a retirement present(I was told)... I had twin 200 2 strokes and they pushed this boat up to 50 mph on flat water. There is just as much room in the cabin as the G-W walkarounds. Lots of storage space. I was told the reason G-W discontinued the cat was because they would have to build a new plant to mass produce them and G-W didn't think there was going to be much of a market for cats. I think if you get one, you won't be sorry. I was sorry for selling mine and sold it to a gentleman who had one and flipped it over on the interstate. This should say something good for them. He had to have another one. Dale D. 8) 283 Release T F225 Yamahas Simply Divine III

  1. Perry Design Review: Corsair F-28

August 25, 2000. With more than 450 F-27s built, we can hardly approach the new folding Corsair F-28 as a novel design. The Corsair group felt it was time to update the 12-year-old F-27.
