We just got back after spending 10 days on Another Perfect Season Power Catamaran out of Virgin Charter Yachts on Tortola. Everything was perfect! Alexia and her staff were top notch! They greeted us warmly to show us around and completed a check out as we took this beautiful boat out on a bareboat charter; made sure we had everything we needed (even a birthday cake for one we were celebrating), AND checked in with us mid-week to make sure everything was going okay. By the way, the blue boat in Virgin Charter Yachts is a picture of Another Perfect Season. It is brand new and so roomy with many modern touches. 3 couples had plenty of room and privacy for the week as we motored around the islands enjoying different beaches, bars, and restaurants. This was our first experience with spending time on a bareboat charter-it won’t be our last. We will be back to visit BVI on Another Perfect Season ASAP!!!! This is Where You Start Your BVI Catamaran Charter

Most charters start from Tortola , the largest and most populated island in the British Virgin Islands. With distances between anchorages being under 20 NM , you can easily be in Jost Van Dyke, Peter Island, or Virgin Gorda Island before the end of the day.

You will also find some catamaran charters based in the USVI, but be aware that many catamarans are presented as ‘British Virgin Islands/US Virgin Islands’ , but many don’t have a BVI license “yet” . After signing, you might be surprised that the boat can only do USVI.

Top Tips for Luxury BVI Catamaran Charter

• If you plan your next BVI yacht charter with a catamaran, there are direct flights to Beef Island airport or Ferry from St Thomas.
• Most travelers prefer to fly to St Thomas  and take a water taxi (we assist and help arrange). Why – there is a multitude of reasons starting with the price of flights – which are generally cheaper to USVI including a water taxi and ending with BVI airport having 2.5/5 reviews with most reviewers complaining about lack of AC and immigration procedures (sometimes too relaxed, other times unpleasantly meticulous). Island Time is a feature, not a bug.

• Start your charter at Nanny Cay Marina on Tortola Island—the central point of any BVI charter. This well-equipped marina has a nice restaurant and the famous beach bar Peg Legs (have a Dark&Stormy) in the British Virgin Islands.

• One of the most successful catamaran charters in the British Virgin Islands right now is OHANA , an 80-foot Sunreef with a fully equipped dive center and professional dive instructors on staff. Where to Go on a BVI Catamaran Charter

Most BVI catamaran charters depart from Nanny Cay , island hopping along Treasure Island, Norman Island, Peter Island, and Cooper Island on their way to Virgin Gorda . Depending on the weather, Anegada is often included. This catamaran charter route will cover the key attractions of the British Virgin Islands.

When on the way back, return via the Nort side of Tortola , hitting Cane Garden Bay and continuing to Jost Van Dyke – coming back through Sopers Hole .

If you finish your catamaran charter on Tortola, you can depart at the Hodges Creek marina and catch your flight from Beef I sland Airport .

If you are approaching from USVI – crossing Jost Van Dyke or Tortola, you must pass customs first. However, the bigger crewed catamarans often move to Exumas for the summer.

Virgin Gorda is the third largest island in the British Virgin Islands, with just over 4,000 people.

It’s known for its beautiful white sands, the rock pools known as The Baths National Park , and world-class luxury resorts and clubs for BVI yacht charters.

There are also some great hiking trails on Virgin Gorda with sweeping views of the island’s coastline-making it an ideal destination for visitors with  bareboat catamarans .

After soaking up the sunshine and saltwater activities in Virgin Gorda, consider visiting the Copper Mine National Park . These 19th-century abandoned ruins are found between Copper Mine Bay and Crooks Bay on the island’s southeastern point. The structures were built by Cornish miners and housed around 130 families before the mine was closed in 1862.

Jost Van Dyke

Jost Van Dyke, one of the smallest leeward islands, is renowned for its exceptional scuba diving , thanks to its vibrant marine life, making it a top destination for snorkeling and water sports enthusiasts.

But what really makes Jost Van Dyke stand out as a charter destination is its super great vibe and positive energy around White Bay and Great Harbour.

Don’t miss a visit to the Great Harbour Bars of Foxy’s and Ivan’s for a drink, the peaceful energy of Diamond Cay , and the crashing waves of Bubbly Pool .

☛ Crewed Charters

Immerse yourself in luxury and choose a crewed charter where everything is taken care of, and you won’t need to think about a thing. A Crewed Charter usually includes at least a Captain and a Chef but can also cover a stewardess, masseuses, dive instructors, personal trainers, and yoga instructors. The boat is provisioned according to guest wishes and preferences. Since all the work is handled by the crew, the guests can really have a relaxed, laid-back time.

☛ Captain-Only Charters

Captain-only charters are a good middle ground between the crewed charters and the bareboat charters. It’s very much like car rental. You do the paperwork and rent the boat. The local experience of the crew should not be underestimated. A captain will know secret spots and is able to quickly analyze your preferences and types of vacation you wish (or need).

☛ Bareboat Charters

Bareboat charter is the budget-friendly option for qualified sailors. Originally intended for people who know the area, the price convenience caused that today, many of the bareboat captains would be better off with a captain-only charter. If you haven’t been to the BVI before or you haven’t that much experience sailing the boat you wish to charter (rent), consider a captain-only charter, you will thank us later:) At the moment, we don’t include bareboats in our search, please inquire directly and we can find a matching bareboat for you.

Common Issues On a BVI Yacht Charters

• I got a boat from USVI – will I find out, after I sign the contract, that we’ll not go to the BVI at all?
• All-Inclusive – what does it include?
• Air Conditioning – does it run during the night?

Most people would start with 50 islands and cays, right? Let’s start with the relaxed and chilled atmosphere where liming was invented (drinking/eating and chilling for hours without a defined schedule). It’s the freedom that you can have when sail to bars like Willy T, the optimism and positive energy that you recuperate over the course of your vacation, that’s what makes the BVI special.

You can immediately tell the people who arrived yesterday. Full of stress, solving small things… a bundle of nerves that we turn into after prolonged experience with the “real world.” After a few painkillers (the BVI signature drink) or Frozen Margaritas (Willy T is the place), every pain diminishes and the problems fade away. The Baths on Virgin Gorda

A place where you must charter is The Baths. This spectacular place will enchant you and you will fall in love with the Baths. What is so special about this place that you have to charter there? The answer is simple: there are few places on earth that are quite so stunningly beautiful and this part of Virgin Gorda is among them. Big rocks settled in the silky soft sand are breathtaking and once you climb through them you will finish in Devils Bay.

Tortola is the largest island in the BVI and home to the capital where your charter most likely will start. The locals are welcoming and the island is home to numerous stunning white sand beaches like Smuggler’s Cove, Trunk Bay, and Cane Garden Bay, perfect for relaxing with a cold drink.

Nanny Cay is located on the south side of Tortola and is home to the modern Nanny Cay Resort & Marina, known for its great drinks and breathtaking sunsets. The area also hosts the renowned Spring BVI Regatta, attracting sailors from around the world.

Why This Private Catamaran Is a Design Lover’s Dream for Exploring the British Virgin Islands H undreds of years ago, pirates notoriously buried their loot along the shores of the British Virgin Islands . Today, the swashbucklers have long since sailed on and their spoils retrieved, but their hiding spot—the true treasure of the Caribbean—remains, where its natural riches await discovery. The BVI is an archipelago of 60 isles, and while each exudes its own personality and tells its own stories (like the history of sugar cane on Tortola or tales of hidden gold along Norman Island, which is said to have inspired Robert Louis Stephenson’s pirate novel Treasure Island ), an effervescent spirit unites them. The best way to explore them all is by private catamaran, which I where I find myself. The Nomada at Sea is setting sail for five days of island hopping, and I’m climbing aboard. She’s a Lagoon 620 catamaran, lovingly restored by the Nomada Hotel Group , which seeks to rescue forgotten places and reinvent them as destinations for modern travelers with their brand of cool California style. “The idea of Nomada is a love and lifestyle of travel and adventure. At Sea can be the grandest adventure of them all,” says creative director Kimberly Walker. On a personal vacation, she fell in love with the BVI and the thrill of chartering a private vessel; so much so, she decided to create a similar bespoke experience for Nomada guests. “On other catamarans I have chartered in the Caribbean, the fabrics and finishes always felt a bit dull to me, as if the super yachts you read about only deserved patterns and thoughtful touches. We wanted to bring that feeling of a swanky private vessel to Nomada at Sea,” says Walker. “Guests can expect the same attention to experience that we strive for at our hotel properties. The hotelier’s design team deftly curated an elegant island aesthetic without the tropical kitsch. At Tortola’s Nanny Cay Marina, arrangements of lush tropical flowers flanked the ladder inviting my fellow travelers and me aboard. We were then greeted by the gracious crew who’d shepherd us through the isles: captain Ryan Adler; Michelin star experienced chef Kenetha Ashton ; and stewardess Costanza Fernandez. What a stylish place to listen to safety instructions, I thought as our group settled into the lower deck’s handwoven Janus et Cie chairs and plush dining banquette, upholstered in a Pierre Frey performance tweed in shades of sea and sky. Above my shoulder, a matching sun bed begged for loungers (as comfortable of a spot for sipping cocktails as for sneaking in a mid-afternoon nap—both thoroughly tested for research purposes, of course!). Colorful rolls of fringed Matouk beach towels collected in a woven basket like a bouquet caught my eye as Captain Ryan pointed to where the snorkels, Seabobs, stand-up paddleboards, and other gear for watersports were stored on either side of the stern. And up on the front deck overlooking the bow, another pair of sun beds sat behind At Sea’s two new trampolines, breezy perches for reading one of the novels from the catamaran’s stocked bookshelves. Swanky soared quickly to full-blown luxury as we were ushered through a sliding glass door into to the salon. If the delicious aromas of Chef Kenetha’s lunch wafting from the open kitchen weren’t intoxicating enough, my eyes fixated on the L-shaped banquette nestled within the bleached wood interior and dressed sharply in a geometric palm leaf green and tropical blue patterned velvet (also by Pierre Frey). It became a buzzy perch for enjoying a freshly brewed espresso; hanging on the crew’s every word as they regaled stories of their sails across the world; and simply taking in the wild, mountainous coastline through the salon’s surrounding windows. (Sailors can bring a piece of the salon home with pillows in the banquette’s fabric via the hotelier’s online shop, Nomada Deco .) Down a short flight of stairs awaited my private cabin (one of five guest rooms on board). Warm wood paneling enveloped a queen bed outfitted in crisp white Matouk linens, where from beneath the cool cotton duvet I settled in for the night with Netflix cued up on the ensuite iPad and awoke in the morning to the sherbet-hued sun rise glowing through the room-spanning windows. A small door hid the private bathroom, where from nickel Waterworks fixtures in the standing shower I washed off the day’s sunscreen, salt, and sand and then slipped on the fluffy blue-piped Matouk robe to leisurely primp for dinner. Rivaling At Sea’s dreamy design aesthetic are its smartly curated itineraries, which are customized for every charter. Delightful and diverse discoveries await above and below the surface, and the bespoke schedules help travelers experience BVI’s natural and cultural beauty to the hilt. After a family-style breakfast around the alfresco dining table on the lower deck, we disembarked from our digs on a dinghy to explore one island after the next. On the southwestern tip of Virgin Gorda, my fellow travelers and I hiked through The Baths National Park, where mammoth granite boulders shelter quiet sea pools along the white-sand beaches. At Norman Island, we snorkeled around Treasure Point (today’s jewels are the vibrant fish shimmying through the reefs), while along the uninhabited Dog Islands we raced on Sea Bobs. We swam and walked the beaches at Sandy Cay, formerly owned by Laurance S. Rockefeller, whose conservation management team planted over 200 palm trees and designed a trail network through its 13.57 acres. At Jost Van Dyke we waded ashore to the Soggy Dollar Bar for Painkiller cocktails topped with freshly grated nutmeg. We cruised the North Sound via sailboat borrowed from the landmark Bitter End Yacht Club. At every destination, locals welcomed us with enthusiasm, eager to finally share their home with travelers again after rebuilding from the devastating Hurricane Irma in 2017 and reopening after the COVID-19 pandemic shutdown. Aprés explorations on land and sea, we returned by happy hour to our luxe base camp, where she was moored for the night among other catamarans within a quiet cay. A gourmet culinary experience awaited us, whether prepared by chef Kenetha or by a local restaurant on shore, and later our cloud-like beds, where we rested up comfortably for another day venturing into the wild. On the final night of charter, Great Harbour gently rocked me as I floated above it on the bow’s trampoline. Reggae and laughter echoed across the mountain-hugged inlet of Jost Van Dyke as dinghies ferried fellow sailors from dinner and dancing at local watering hole Foxy’s back on board their moored boats. Gazing upward, I’d only ever seen such a big sky in the American West, but I felt that same spirit of connection to natural world as the stars twinkled above the Caribbean and tucked behind the surrounding islands’s forested peaks.
