The River Exe Regatta

About the River Exe Regatta

The River Exe Regatta is an annual celebration of sailing on the estuary of the River Exe, a whole host of dinghy races taking place in the estuary’s huge expanse of water, stretching from Topsham at the northern limit of the estuary, to Exmouth in the south, at the river’s mouth. Some racing also takes place in the coastal waters off the river’s mouth, usually for cruisers and multi-hulls.

exmouth yacht race

The estuary’s shallow tidal waters ensure that the event is suited mainly to dinghies, though cruiser racing is also usually held out to sea. Racing over several courses spread out across much of the estuary, a wide range of dinghy classes take part, mostly from the local clubs, though participants are also attracted from across Devon and west Dorset.

While much of the fun is on the water, there’s also plenty going on off the water, apres-sail, with a party at the host club on the Saturday evening, and a tea-party-cum-prize-giving after the racing on the Sunday afternoon.

The aim of the regatta is to promote the sport of sailing on the River Exe’s waters, and to generate funds to enable sail training to take place. Once the costs of organising the event are covered, and surplus funds raised, mainly from sponsors and advertisers, are put towards training in the following year. This goal comes under the banner of the Regatta Project.

The Regatta Project

Welcome to Exe Sailing Club

at-home-2018-small

Welcome to Exe Sailing club which has been established in Exmouth since 1912. It has undergone many changes over the years but one thing that has remained consistent is our professional attitude towards all things sailing and our friendly style. Dinghies, cruisers, club racing, casual sailing, RYA accredited training – we do the lot!

Secure dinghy and tender berthing and sheltered beach launching creates the perfect opportunity for both estuary and sea sailing.

The club has a highly successful track record for hosting dinghy open meeting and national championships. In 2018 we welcomed the International 14 class and the prestigious Prince of Wales Cup.

As a family orientated club, sailing is encouraged from an early age. The aim is to support junior sailors to achieve their sailing potential and ambitions, be that to win at the highest levels or competently race at club level. A number of Exe Sailing Club members went on to become Olympic sailors.

Weekly well organised racing sessions ensures the club maintains social and friendly competitiveness amongst it’s sailors. The clubhouse offers a wonderful restaurant and bar area with an outside balcony where club members can socialise, whilst watching the sun go down.

A Bit About Me

My journey in the mining industry began in 2013, fresh out of university, fueled by enthusiasm and a keen desire to learn. While studying, I had envisioned starting my career in open-pit mining, which led me to focus my thesis on open-pit optimization. However, fate had other plans, and my first operational opportunity arose at the esteemed Jundee mine site in Western Australia.

After a decade of diverse experiences in underground mining—exploring different commodities, mining methods, and roles—I achieved the milestone of earning a First Class Mine Manager's Certificate, a goal that I had set during my university days. My latest work has found me expanding my expertise in open pit drill and blast, a new challenge I thoroughly enjoy alongside a great team.

From my earliest days as a kid, I've been captivated by innovation, often found making modifications to remote-controlled cars or my sailing boat in pursuit of performance improvements. This drive for improvement was undoubtedly influenced by my competitive spirit, instilled by growing up alongside my identical twin brother. In 2020, my brother and I co-founded Protteam Mining, where innovation is our focus. At Protteam Mining, I value the collaborative spirit and camaraderie, recognizing the collective effort required for success.

Beyond work, I cherish moments with my family, finding joy in simple pleasures like outings to the park with my wife and young son. I also enjoy surfing and sailing for exercise and relaxation, a result of growing up enjoying the beautiful waters of Esperance, renowned for having some of the best beaches in the world. In 2023, I participated in the Fremantle to Exmouth yacht race aboard a timber boat named Merlin, which my father meticulously rebuilt, celebrating its 50th birthday this year! And when time permits, my family's favorite destination is Exmouth, where the Ningaloo Coast offers endless ocean adventures.
