my paris yacht

The most recent yacht to join the Atalanta fleet, O’Pari is sure to be the star of the charter market. Able to effortlessly receive up to 12 guests, and with a stellar crew of 30 trained to cater to their clients’ every need, the possibilities are endless.

A ‘green yacht’ equipped with the latest DPJ systems to combat and reduce pollutants, O’Pari is ready to cruise in complete serenity. With an average speed of 16 knots and stabilisers for use at anchor and underway, she is ready for adventure and is sure to keep guests coming back for more.

MY OPari 1200x800

The Captain

The Greek Captain Alexandros Skaris has been in the charter business for almost 20 years, with many of his guests being repeat visitors to his yachts. Speaking of his role as captain, it is clear that he has a true passion for delivering the ultimate ocean experience. “The challenge in my role is to offer memories that extend beyond the yacht and the destination,” he says. “To build a connection with the guests and be part of their memories."

The Experience

O’Pari is a yacht that offers a little something for everyone. Her ample space and superb contemporary decoration give an immediate feeling of calm and luxury. Exotic marble walls contrast with sleek wooden floors, allowing guests to breathe a sigh of relief when they step on board.

The upper deck plays host to an impressive owner’s suite complete with its own salon. In total, O’Pari offers 14 guest cabins, including a master, one VIP, six  doubles, four twins with pullman and one single/hospital cabin, all with ensuite bathrooms.

MY OPari Superyacht Stories 3

A full gym and spa including a massage room, a Turkish hammam and a Finnish sauna are sure to delight those seeking ultimate relaxation. For others in the mood for more of a party, the open plan sun deck offers a full bar, a DJ booth and plenty of space to dance the night away while taking in the panoramic views. A touch and go helipad on the upper deck adds the final touch of prestige to this incredible vessel.

Venture down to the lower deck and you’ll find that O’Pari has even more to offer. Several tenders are ready and waiting, whether you are looking for a smooth ride into port or a beach landing for a barbecue.

SeaBobs, Seadoos and inflatable jungle gyms and infinity pools are just a few of the treats O’Pari has in store.

The Cuisine

The talented Chef Takis Papayiannis brings the best of Mediterranean cooking to every dish he creates. Born and raised in Greece, he trained in his home country before honing his skills at some of the best 5 star restaurants across Europe. Working alongside Assistant Chef Steliyan Dimitrov, the dining experience on board O’Pari is therefore nothing short of perfect.

MY OPari cuisine Superyacht Stories

A key feature of Chef Papayiannis’ menus is fresh seafood. Popular dishes might include freshly caught lobster baked with hollandaise sauce served with sweet potatoes and green apple, or healthy salads packed with flavour, such as scallop, tuna, tomato and fresh herbs finished with a zingy lime dressing. Whatever the mood, Chef Papagiannis always rises to the occasion whether he’s catering laid-back brunches with classic favourites or formal dining and celebratory feasts.

For a sophisticated evening the main deck is the ideal setting for up to 16 guests, while the upper aft deck is the perfect spot for al fresco meals. Elevating the entire experience, Chef Papayiannis and O’Pari ’s interior crew are also renowned for their immaculate table settings to complement the theme of each menu.

The romantic city of lights.

The most visited city in the world , the city of lights: Paris. From its architecture, its small bistros, its noisy brasseries, the famous Eiffel tour, the French fashion, the romance, this city also has the advantage of having a river run through it: the Seine . Of course walking through the streets of Paris is already magical, but seeing it from the water will give you the luxury to see if from an entirely unique and breath-taking perspective. Chartering a yacht in Paris is a wonderful idea.

Cruising around Paris

From romantic rides to simple visits, the city from the Seine is absolutely beautiful. You will get to observe the historical docks, pass under magnificent bridges ( such as the Pont- Neuf, le Pont des Arts, or the Pont Alexandre III ). There is so much going on in this city, that being on the water will give you the opportunity to explore it in a calm and relaxed manner, no rush. At night or during the day, you will see completely different landscapes: picturesque architecture with golden statues during the day, and the city of lights at night. You may even pass by the Eiffel tour !

Customers testimonials

A must do in paris.

This was above and beyond! This was more amazing than I expected. The captain was so friendly and went the extra mile to give us information about all the landmarks we passed. 10000% recommend to anyone visiting Paris. Magnifique!!

Beautiful views! Great cruise!

We had the best experience on this cruise for our last night in Paris (family of 6 adults). Pre-cruise communication was prompt and we were able to get details on where to park and finding the dock was easy. Everything was ready when we arrived a few minutes early. We departed from the Pont d’Issy location. There was even a food hall on the corner where we found eatery options for dinner before we left. Pontoon type boat was modern, comfortable, clean, and spacious. It was lovely to see Paris from the water and we had unobstructed views of all the major sites. The pilot was a lovely tour guide and showed all points of interest and shared interesting facts. We highly recommended this cruise for a relaxing, evening tour of Paris from the River Seine. Thank you for closing out our time in Paris with this fabulous cruise.

Best activity if short on time

Our skipper was the best host on the boat. Great navigation skills and photography. The boat was lovely and perfect size for our group of 8. Got up nice and close to the Eiffel tower and Notre Dame and seeing all the beautiful buildings. Couldn’t recommend it highly enough, perfect thing to do in Paris. Nice and easy booking system and speedy replies

Our pilot made our trip in the best possible manner. Not to mention his knowledge of the city but also his performance as a captain and dancer was unbelievable ! Many thanks from Ksenia, Daria and other members)

Patrick is Awesome!!

Weather crappy and we were worried about out cruise. There were 3 generations together on a fun few days in Paris.

Patrick was inviting, fun, attentive and brought the Seine to life. He’s a great tour guide and made our day fun despite the weather. Provided blankets and any music we wanted!

Best part of our day!!

Most Romantic Paris Proposal Ever (on a Private Yacht)

Find out how Jay secretly pulled off one of the most mind-blowing Eiffel Tower proposals ever.

Watch the most romantic Paris boat proposal of all time.

Location : The Seine River, Paris, with jaw-dropping Eiffel Tower views Setting : Private Seine River Cruise (Paris boat proposal) Season : summer Time of Day : Daytime Package : proposal planning, private Seine River yacht rental, floral design & decor, photography, videography, master violinist, Cinderella horse-drawn carriage, and surprise decoration of their hotel suite. Proposal Cost : $$$ Concept: Luxury scavenger hunt marriage proposal culminating with a romantic engagement on the ship deck of a luxurious private Seine River Private boat; Hotel suite surprise decoration; horse-drawn Cinderella carriage; and much more.

Do I need a planner for a Paris boat proposal?

Let’s keep this simple: hiring an experienced event planner for your Paris boat proposal is required when you work with us. Pulling off this particular surprise engagement (on a Seine River vessel) without your partner catching wind takes true expertise and exceptional communication between the boat, the couple, and the vendors.

How much does it cost to do a romantic Paris boat proposal?

We can’t give you a one-size-fits-all quote since every custom proposal is different; the cost of your package depends on multiple elements, notably:

  • Whether you opt for a daytime (lunch) vs. evening (dinner) cruise;
  • Additional proposal services (e.g., photographer, videographer or video reel, floral design, master musician, red carpet, Marry Me Letters set-up, etc.);
  • Proposal planning fee.

Why propose in Paris?

Travel is an integral part of who we are as a couple. For the first years of our relationship, we’d commute 4 hours to see each other. We quickly became accustomed to planes, trains, cars, and whatever would bring us closer together.

Pri is an explorer who grew up journeying the world with her parents. She loves immersing herself in new cultures, absorbing everything like a sponge.

On the other hand, I spent most of my life in New Jersey. Ha, the rest of the world was a black hole to me. I had always preferred to stay within my comfort zone and rarely ventured too far from my everyday routine.

That’s at least until Pri entered my life: an adorable bundle of energy, her enthusiasm for the  unexplored  is contagious.

Many folks told us we were too different to make things work. However, Pri gently encouraged me to push my boundaries which has helped me grow.

I opted for a destination engagement in Paris to show Pri how much she’s changed my life—my ideologies, passions, and who I am. I wanted her to know that I so much look forward to tackling the unknown with her forever.

The City of Love was an easy choice—who wouldn’t want a romantic Paris proposal?

But for us, Paris represents more than that: it’s the first spot we traveled to on our own and will always harbor a special place in our hearts.

The other important reason I went with a destination proposal in Paris was to unwind from daily stress and thoroughly experience this life-changing moment free from distractions and routine.

Why did you hire a proposal planner? Why Chantelle-Marie from Kiss Me in Paris?

I did not anticipate hiring a Paris proposal planner . Ha, I am an obsessive planner and initially thought I could handle things independently.

Boy, was I wrong! Suppose you, too, want a romantic Paris proposal. Then, I’d recommend investing in a local event planner—even when your proposal ideas are not as complex as mine.

Planning a destination engagement across time zones and languages is not for the faint of heart. The devil is in the detail, where even a minor hiccup can turn your dream engagement upside down.

It may sound cliché, but there are no do-overs regarding a once-in-a-lifetime moment.

A professional Paris proposal planner will take any worries off your plate. You’re already spending significant resources on her ring, travel, and engagement. Consider hiring an event planner as defacto insurance in soothing peace of mind.

To that point (while I don’t recommend it), you might well be able to negotiate with all requisite vendors on your own. But ensuring they coordinate with each other and show up at the exact time is no easy task.

Plus, you’ll already be nervous with so much on your mind. The last thing to worry about is micromanaging local Parisian artists on one of the most important days of your life.

Instead, you’ll want to rest easy knowing that every detail is taken care of. As such, you can focus on the only thing that matters—showing your partner 100 percent undivided attention and love.

Pri and I were traveling to Paris under the pretext of an anniversary trip . I thoroughly enjoyed our vacation leading up to the proposal because I knew everything would be professionally managed.

I remember exactly where I was when Chantelle and I first FaceTimed —in a busy airport restaurant, waiting for my flight to take off. Honestly, I was still uncertain whether I needed a Paris proposal planner.

I recall how much energy Chantelle brought to the call. It was immediately apparent she’s super-passionate about helping her clients! And looking back, Chantelle maintained her enthusiasm throughout every stage of my engagement—from coming up with uniquely romantic Paris proposal ideas through ‘day-of’ execution.

She was always cheerful with a can-do attitude—which is remarkable considering my highly ambitious Paris proposal ideas.

I felt confident about Chantelle because she never tried to sell herself during our initial consultation. Instead, she came across as a dependable partner who cared deeply about realizing a romantic Parisian engagement for me.

For instance, even before officially booking Kiss Me in Paris, I mentioned how challenging it was to find a suitable hotel. Everything was either sold out or just too expensive.

Chantelle suggested a 700 sq. ft (total white decoration) terrace suite with magnificent views of the Arc de Triomphe.

Believe it or not, I immediately booked the suite on the spot while we were still on the phone. Recall that I had not even hired Chantelle. Yet, she already helped me big time; it was instantly clear she was naturally helpful and the perfect fit for me.

I can’t help but smile when I reflect on all the emails and FaceTime we exchanged. I must have come across as pseudo-neurotic with my elaborate Paris proposal ideas; I demanded nothing short of the world of Chantelle.

I refused to back down on any detail. Chantelle worked tirelessly to make my vision a reality. Not sure how she did it, but she was somehow available day and night; the time zone difference never seemed to matter. She was always there for me when I needed her.

For instance, the day before our marriage proposal, I realized I forgot to pack the blindfold I’d use when we entered our decorated hotel suite as fiancés. While I hadn’t paid Chantelle for concierge services, she went shopping that night to find the perfect blindfold.

Likewise, as chance would have it, Pri’s hair straightener broke on the day of our engagement. Pri was a little distressed since she wanted her hair to look amazing for our private yacht dinner cruise. Again, Chantelle came to the rescue, making her way to our hotel to offer her hair straightener!

I can list a million additional little ways Chantelle made my life easier. However, you only need to check out our proposal video and photos. My proposal was as much hers as it was mine. There’s simply no possible way I could have pulled off even 1/10th without her!

Most importantly, without Chantelle and the Kiss Me in Paris team, I don’t think I would have so utterly immersed myself in the moment. No distractions. No worries. Just endless excitement and butterflies.

So many little details could have gone wrong in what amounted to a 24-hour romantic Paris proposal adventure. However, nothing did! Every vendor executed their part to perfection. We took pictures and videos at our favorite spots around Paris . Our vendors arrived early and stayed longer than commissioned, so we never felt rushed or on the clock .

We’d be delighted to customize a romantic Paris proposal package for you.

How did you come up with romantic paris proposal ideas that are unique and unforgettable.

The story of my dream proposal had been writing itself since the first time I met Pri. Deep in my heart, I instantly knew she was the one. It just brings me great joy to see her happy. I love coming up with little surprises … and our marriage proposal would have to be the ultimate surprise.

In the end, it was always going to be a princess-themed engagement. Ha, Pri’s family affectionately calls her  Princess , and she’s royalty to me! Her regal spending habits aside, she’s a big Disney fan …. so I had to find a way to incorporate some Disney movie magic into our marriage proposal.

My sister initially helped me develop fabulous romantic proposal themes. We came up with the following:

  • a “Be My Guest” Royal French dinner à la  Beauty and the Beast ;
  • a Royal Garden tea party ( Alice in Wonderland ); and
  • A carriage ride, a glass slipper, a princess photo shoot, and a royal suite to pay homage to  Cinderella .
Proposing in Paris was an easy decision. During our first joint trip to the City of Lights, one of Pri’s favorite memories was our Seine River dinner cruise, where we got to see the sparkling Eiffel Tower up-close.

Next, it was time to put some flesh on the bones of my initial proposal ideas to ensure they actually worked in Paris. Chantelle and the Kiss Me in Paris Team were seriously from heaven-sent, considering their deep local knowledge and expertise.

Together, we decided on the most suitable places in Paris, prioritizing experience-enhancing settings that would photograph well.

The goal was to create the most unforgettable day for Pri instead of a single event. The question was how to harmoniously string together a series of mini-experiences that would crescendo with me asking Pri to become my wife in front of the Eiffel Tower.

Well, note to you: the little things that make a big difference can render your marriage proposal even more magical. For instance, Chantelle came up with elegant hand-written (calligraphy) ‘Be my Guest’ cards that gently nudged us from one experience to the next.

Chantelle suggested a blindfold, a violinist, and other memorable Paris proposal ideas, such as a personalized love lock. She even hired a local artisan to create our stunning Forever Rose (Beauty and the Beast).

Impossible is nothing. With that in mind, we worked passionately as a team, and the result exceeded my lofty expectations.

What were the biggest challenges in pulling off this fairytale engagement?

Let me come right out and say that pulling off a romantic Paris proposal as elaborate as mine is nearly impossible without an experienced and well-connected local Parisian event planner.

Well, how do you get a vendor team (florist, violinist, photographer, and videographer ) to access a private river cruise after you board with your partner without ruining the surprise?

Discretely getting vendors aboard is only the first logistical challenge. Then, your floral designer has 30 minutes to transform the ship’s deck into a breathtaking setting worthy of an epic engagement. Finally, your violinist, photographer , and videographer must precisely coordinate their positioning for optimal visual results.

As mentioned, our engagement in Paris spanned an entire day, starting with a sunrise couple photoshoot at Trocadero , one of the most iconic Eiffel Tower locations.

Pri expected me to propose right there and then. However, that’s not really what happened. Sure, I eventually dropped to my knee as if I would pop the question. Yet, sticking with the Cinderella theme, I offered my Princess a glam pair of Louboutins rather than a ring.

The challenge related to the sunrise shoot was more about maintaining natural flow and keeping the space free from other couple shoots, given that Trocadero is a public setting. We had limited time coordinating multiple vendors, the light-hearted Louboutin fakeout proposal, and a portrait session with five oversized balloons.

Note to other couples: Paris is a busy city, so don’t simply expect every popular backdrop to be blissfully free of distractions. That will not happen. I recommend hiring an associate to help with crowds. Said associate might also double as a handy resource to carry your belongings and keep your precious items safe from theft.

Other challenges related to my Parisian engagement included:

  • getting her engagement ring through airport security and keeping it safely hidden;
  • coordinating different outfits for our morning and evening photoshoots, as well as the River Seine yacht proposal;
  • preparing the perfect marriage proposal speech;
  • embellishing our hotel suite worthy of the occasion;
  • Enabling our photographer and videographer to catch up with us on the move—notably during the horse & carriage ride.

Would you recommend a photographer and a videographer?

I discovered Cengiz online and immediately fell in love with his photos—especially the so-called Blue-Hour pictures taken at the Louvre around sunset.

His professionalism and commitment to my vision were even more important than his skill as a photographer. Cengiz was so excited about my proposal. He isn’t merely a Paris photographer but a soundboard and friend. Cengiz committed so much time to help me refine the timeline with optimal lighting and visuals in mind.

Not once did Cengiz tell me something was impossible. He arrived earlier than commissioned. He stayed later. He enlisted a team to assist with crowd control, watch over our belongings, and assist with lighting.

His energy is contagious. Pri and I are not models and, accordingly, not particularly comfortable in front of the camera. Cengiz gave us clear directions, which kept the flow natural and fun. He’s exceptionally good at crowd control, which can make a big difference in a busy city.

We never felt intruded upon during personal moments. Cengiz did not distract from the passion and emotion of the moment; if anything, he enhanced it!

I was unsure whether we needed a professional filmmaker. Ultimately, my family convinced me to hire one. Looking back, I am so thrilled we had a cinematographer on board. Videography is compelling and tells the same story differently than photos.

Tuan, our Paris videographer, did a fantastic job seamlessly weaving the many elements of our engagement into a single film. Tuan turned around the edited trailer so quickly compared with what we are accustomed to in the United States.

With the benefit of hindsight, I implore you to invest in a talented English-speaking photographer and videographer. I understand that destination engagements are expensive, and we often exceed our initial budget expectations. But your engagement is not the time or place to hold back.

Sure, you could save a little here or there, but is it worth hiring artists who may negatively affect your experience? And would you not regret it if the documentation of your marriage proposal does not reflect how you remember it?

Hear from Jay’s fiancée what she loved most about his romantic Paris proposal.

The first call was to my parents and sister, who are so competitive that I had to ring them simultaneously! They knew in advance that Jay would propose and were dying to hear every last detail. Jay’s proposal was so perfect that my mom, sister, and I took turns crying.

I could not have imagined something so personalized and romantic in my wildest dreams—it was like straight out of the movies!

In the months leading up to our Paris trip, Jay made every effort to kill any inkling of hope I might have had that he would propose to me. When we booked our tickets, he repeatedly told me, “I’ll not propose Pri, so don’t get your hopes up high.”

I was miffed but believed Jay because he’s a terrible liar. Family is vital to me, so I knew Jay would never propose without asking for permission. And my family cannot keep a secret if their lives depend on it.

I figured I’d get them to spill the beans if they knew of an imminent marriage proposal. As much as I poked, prodded, and interrogated, my family made me believe that Jay had never asked them for my hand in marriage.

What’s more, Jay waited until the final day of our trip to propose. So, our vacation’s first six ‘proposal-less’ days convinced me it wouldn’t happen in Paris.

Our sunrise photo shoot was a lot of fun. The Louboutins were a red herring , so I suspected nothing going into our private yacht dinner.

After concluding dinner, we walked upstairs onto the vessel’s deck. I saw the beautiful decorations, uncountable rose petals, and the fabulous forever rose. I was surprised to see Cengiz (again) taking pictures. Yet, somehow, it still did not cross my mind that Jay was about to pop the question.

I cannot say enough good things about Tuan and Cengiz. Both are incredibly talented at their craft, and I can’t recommend them highly enough. Cengiz was fantastic at putting us at ease and making us feel gorgeous like models. I must admit I was slightly self-conscious at first. Still, I quickly became comfortable before the lens, forgetting we were even being photographed.

During the proposal, Cengiz and Tuan navigated the limited space of the yacht with ease and grace not to distract us. As such, I was focused on the love of my life kneeling before me.

The mouthwatering dinner on the yacht was nothing short of perfection. I’d recommend the experience to any couple who values a memorable evening in Paris. An intimate cruise along the Seine is just such a romantic and relaxing way to enjoy the beauty of the City of Lights.

Most expenses are deducted from an Advance Provisioning Allowance (APA), a fund that is added on top of the charter price. The expenses, such as provisioning, fuel, marina fees, are deducted from the APA. The APA is based on the price of the yacht and ranges from 15% (crewed sailing yachts) to 30% (motor yachts with higher fuel consumption). You can actively control these expenses in your preference sheet (local vs. imported beverages) and by choice of itinerary (distances traveled). The remainder of the APA is returned after charter.">Price Terms: Plus Expenses

Forget fighting crowds in Paris this summer. My charming Canadian city has plenty of museums, baguettes, and francophones.

  • With the olympics this summer , Paris is bound to be a zoo, but luckily there's always Montreal.
  • I live in the European-feeling Canadian town , and I love the French culture around every corner.
  • If you're looking for charm, history, and food, Montreal is the perfect summer destination .

Insider Today

Paris may be on your travel bucket list , but it's bound to be packed with tourists as the 2024 Summer Olympics unfold in the City of Lights in July.

Fortunately, there's another option if you don't want to spend your whole trip waiting in long lines and paying surge prices on the metro .

Montreal — the second-largest city in Canada — features much of the European charm you'll find in Paris from its long history of French influence.

The city comes alive in the summertime after suffering through freezing-cold winters. Its residents, suddenly full of "joie de vivre," take full advantage of the plentiful parks, pedestrian-only streets, festivals, and patios.

It's also the city I'm lucky to call home, so here are eight reasons you should travel to Montreal instead of Paris this summer .

If you’re looking for a historic, European feel, you’ll find it in Old Montreal.

my paris yacht

Lined with cobblestone streets and historic brick architecture, the Old Montreal section of the city feels like you're walking through 18th-century Paris.

Quebec, the province Montreal is located in, is a unique corner of Canada where the majority of locals speak French or some version of what we call Franglais (a combination of French and English). Because of this, most of the street signs and banners in Old Montreal are in French.

It's certainly one of the most touristy parts of the city — but for good reason. The area is home to some of the best restaurants, art galleries, shops, cafés, and bars.

The historic district also runs along the St. Laurence River.

my paris yacht

Strolling along the beautiful boardwalk on the St. Laurence River, you'll find a marina filled with boats, a selection of food trucks, the longest urban zipline in Canada, and a Ferris wheel.

There's also the Montreal Science Centre, a science museum sure to delight all ages.

Forget Notre-Dame in Paris — Montreal has its own.

my paris yacht

Just like Paris, we have plenty of historic cathedrals to admire, including a particularly spectacular one named Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal.

Although undoubtedly more famous, the Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Paris is still under construction after a fire in 2019, so if you went to Europe, you wouldn't be able to go inside it anyway.

If museums are what you’re after, Montreal also has plenty of those.

my paris yacht

Whether you're interested in art, history, archeology, or science, Montreal has a host of acclaimed museums that can satisfy your thirst for knowledge.

Some of its best include the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, the Biodome, and the Pointe-à-Callière Museum.

The latter is a history museum in Old Montreal that features many exhibitions about the people who founded the city in 1642.

Montreal can easily satisfy your craving for a croissant or a baguette.

my paris yacht

One of the best parts of visiting Paris is eating wonderful French pastries and treats, like croissants and fresh baguettes.

Luckily, my city is filled to the brim with adorable, independent cafés that claim to sell the best baked goods in the city.

If you visit, you'll find that choosing the best isn't an easy task because many of them really are that good.

You’ll find plenty of foodies dining al fresco.

my paris yacht

As soon as the weather is remotely tolerable, Montrealers emerge outdoors, eager to soak up the sun.

Like Paris' famous outdoor cafés, our patios (called terrasses) appear on the streets and sidewalks almost overnight.

Residents eagerly fill them, drinking wine or beer and eating foods inspired by cuisines all over the world.

Like Paris, Montreal is also one of the world’s fashion capitals.

my paris yacht

The city is known for its particularly well-dressed dwellers , with many residents sporting unique looks that are artistic, vintage, and high-fashion.

That's partly thanks to the many boutiques scattered throughout Montreal. Whether you're looking for something secondhand or locally made, you're sure to find it.

There's no shortage of greenspaces and public seating options.

my paris yacht

As many North American cities adopt "hostile architecture" that discourages gathering in public spaces, Montreal has parks filled with benches for sitting and reading. There are also plenty of grassy, shaded areas for Parisian-style picnics.

And we can't forget Mount Royal — the mountain for which the city is named. Located just west of downtown, the massive mountain is home to a large park, historic monuments , a lake, a lookout with a stunning view of the city skyline, and walking trails.

On Sundays, locals and visitors gather on the eastern slope for Tam-Tams, a weekly summer festival where people play hand drums.

Melvin, Findlay and Burnham head the National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024

  • Copy Link copied

NEWPORT, Rhode Island (AP) — Pete Melvin, who helped design breakthrough boats for the America’s Cup as well as the Nacra 17 used in the Olympics, and Conn Findlay, who won Olympic medals in sailing and rowing, head the list of 12 inductees in the National Sailing Hall of Fame’s Class of 2024.

As part of the firm M&M, Melvin helped design the giant trimaran that tech tycoon Larry Ellison’s BMW Oracle Racing used to win the 2010 America’s Cup in a one-off regatta against Alinghi of Switzerland’s giant catamaran. M&M also drafted the design rules for the 72-foot catamarans used in the 2013 America’s Cup, which ushered in foiling in sailing’s marquee regatta.

M&M designed the Nacra 17 catamaran that debuted in the 2016 Olympics. For the 2021 Olympics in Tokyo, the Nacra 17 added foils. Melvin sailed in the 1988 Olympics and has won numerous national and world titles.

Findlay won a total of four Olympic medals, including a bronze medal with Dennis Conner in the Tempest class in 1976. In rowing, he won two golds and one bronze in coxed pairs. He sailed in the America’s Cup three times, including with winning skipper Ted Turner aboard Courageous in 1977.

Also entering the hall is Kevin Burnham, who won a silver medal in the 470 class in the 1992 Olympics with Morgan Reeser and then won gold with Paul Foerster in 2004.

In one of the most memorable races in Olympic history, Foerster and Burnham aggressively match-raced the British boat to the back of the fleet and stayed ahead the entire race to win the gold medal. At the finish line, Burnham, then 47, waved to race officials, let out a whoop and then did a backflip into the Saronic Gulf off Athens, barefoot and still wearing his sunglasses. Burnham died in 2020.

The induction will be Oct. 4-5 at the Chicago Yacht Club.

Among the other inductees are Jan C. O’Malley, a three-time US Sailing Yachtswoman of the Year and the first winner of the IYRU Women’s World Sailing Championship; Charles Ulmer, a national champion and race winner throughout the 1970s and 80s; and Richard Tillman, the 1965 Sailor of the Year who held national, North American and world titles in the Snipe, Finn, Laser, Sunfish and Windsurfing classes.

Also going into the hall are Franklin Wood; Allegra Mertz; brothers Eric Hall and Ben Hall; Gary Mull; and Carl Alberg.

Melinda French Gates at the Pivotal Ventures office in Kirkland, Wash., on June 10

  • Melinda French Gates Is Going It Alone

T he early days of the pandemic were a complicated time for a lot of couples.

But it’s fair to say that in the sprawling, Pacific lodge-style home of Melinda and Bill Gates, the complexity was particularly acute. The foundation the couple co-led had been running a flu study in their hometown of Seattle, which had detected early cases of COVID-19 in the region. There were video calls with infectious-disease specialists they funded, world leaders, epidemiologists, journalists, and public-health officials. Two of their three children were home from school full time. Plus, the couple was secretly separated, trading off who lived at the family house and who was elsewhere while they tried to figure out if they could stay married.

“It was a super intense time for us as a foundation,” says Melinda French Gates , sitting in her industrial-chic office in Kirkland, Wash., three days after exiting the world-changing organization that bore her name for almost 25 years. “The other thing I would say, though, is, unusually, it gave us the privacy to do what needed to be done in private. You know, I separated first before I made the full decision about a divorce. And to be able to do that in private while I’m still trying to take care of the kids, while still making certain decisions about how you’re going to disentangle your life—thank God.”

Melinda French Gates Time Magazine cover

Most divorces are not undertaken lightly. They can blow a hole in a couple’s finances and health, the happiness of their children , and each partner’s self-esteem. French Gates didn’t have to worry so much about that first issue. But unlike others, she did have to think about the effect her divorce , finalized two weeks before her 57th birthday in August 2021, might have on the world. It’s not an exaggeration to say that if the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation were damaged by the collapse of the Bill and Melinda Gates marriage, it could affect the welfare of millions of people around the globe. How do you factor that in when you’re figuring out if your marriage is over?

“I would say it’s a personal thing,” French Gates says, after a significant pause, of her decisionmaking process at the time. Her office, while lush, is not showy. All warm wood and eggshell, its most prominent feature is a large poster spelling out the word JOY . But there are hints of her influence—among the family photos are notes from Bono and Barack Obama. “I thought a lot about my three children,” she says. “But I certainly thought about the effect on the foundation . Those are the three biggest buckets: me, the kids, and the foundation. And I wanted to make sure that when we came through it to the other side—when I came through it on my side—all of those pieces were intact.”

After a stint away from the spotlight, French Gates seems to have reached the other side. In May, almost exactly three years after news of the divorce broke, she announced her departure from the foundation that began above a pizza parlor with her and two other employees before it was officially launched in 2000. As she leaves, she wants to make a few things clear. She is doing well. She is not out of the philanthropy business; she just announced her second billion-dollar funding plan (her first was in 2019 ). And she’s focused on one issue: helping women thrive.

French Gates no longer wants to be the soft humanist layer surrounding Bill Gates’ hard-data-driven core or a modern Eleanor Roosevelt , well-meaning but powerful only because of her spouse. She has never wanted to ride anybody’s coattails. On the cusp of turning 60, she’s both looser and more direct than in our interviews in prior years , maybe because she now has as unobstructed a view of her goals as she does of the yachts in the lake outside her office window. And she has her own wealth plus $12.5 billion from her ex’s personal stash to achieve them. “I feel like, Wow, I’m 60. I better surround myself with people and still travel [so that] I’m still absolutely learning, because the world is moving, the world is changing,” she says. “I’m totally unencumbered to work in any way I want.”

In a way, French Gates’ emergence as a woman making her own weather is a throwback to her Texan roots. Melinda Ann French, as she was known for her first 29 years, was a standout student at her all-girls Catholic school in Dallas. The nuns there were Ursuline, an order dedicated to educating young women, whose Latin motto translates to “I will serve.” French Gates traveled to jails and hospitals and tutored at low-income schools as part of her education, and still feels that introduction to service shaped her.

She frequently tells the story of how a foresighted teacher, Mrs. Bauer, persuaded the head nun to buy a smattering of Apple II Plus computers in the early ’80s and introduced them to 10 or so of her more math-minded students, including Melinda. She was immediately fascinated, she says, by the logic puzzles that coding presented.

French Gates went to Duke University for a bachelor’s in computer science and an M.B.A. while interning over summers at IBM. When she went for her rubber-stamp interview before accepting a job there, she mentioned she still had an interview at a newbie company, Microsoft. The hiring manager told her to take that job, because there would be more opportunity for advancement.

All along the way, French Gates’ path was lined by people who wanted a little more for women: a better education, access to more advanced knowledge, a less obstructed career path. And she was easy to root for. The second of four children, as a teenager she helped at her parents’ side hustle, a 14-home rental operation, mowing lawns and “Easying-Off the ovens.” She also campaigned to get the grading system changed at her high school. Young Melinda felt students who took AP classes were penalized. She had clocked that, unlike at the more pricey all-girls school nearby, only the valedictorian at her school was accepted into a prestigious college. “I’m like, Oh my God, if I’m not valedictorian, I don’t have a shot at getting in,” she recalls. She got the scoring system changed. And she was valedictorian.

Perhaps it was that combo of pragmatism, ambition, and appreciation for data that drew Microsoft’s founder to her the evening they took the last two seats at a company dinner in New York City in 1987. At first, says French Gates, she wasn’t sure Bill was her type. He tried to schedule a drinks date two weeks in advance. After she declined what sounded like an appointment, he called and changed it to later that evening. They married in 1994.

It’s a sad symptom of how little respect is given to parenting that French Gates, who ceased paid work and focused on raising the couple’s children after 1996, has been accused of not deserving her wealth . Indeed, both Bill and Melinda have acknowledged that it’s unfair for them to have so much money. They decided to give it away even before they were married and asked Gates’ dad Bill Sr. to help. After the William H. Gates Foundation merged into the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation in 2000, French Gates began to take an increasingly large role, primarily championing the data that showed that investing in women—assisting them to stay healthy, get educated , and plan pregnancies—helped raise whole communities out of poverty.

President Obama presents Melinda and Bill Gates the Medal of Freedom

Somewhere along the way, the Gateses became one of America’s favorite couples. They were TIME’s Persons of the Year in 2005 , alongside literal rock-star philanthropist Bono. In 2006, Warren Buffett entrusted the couple with more than $30 billion to disburse. In 2016, they were awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom; in 2017, the French Legion of Honor.

“She’s a very substantial person, and she brings that to her work,” says former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern , who first met French Gates at a U.N. function in 2019. “This isn’t a side project. It’s not a moment in time. Every time I have seen her over the years, she has had a laser focus on what she can do to improve areas of work that support women.”

If you had to pinpoint a moment when Melinda Gates, wife, mother, and philanthropist, began to turn into Melinda French Gates, powerhouse advocate for women, it was probably July 11, 2012, when she co-hosted, alongside the U.K. government, the one-day London Summit on Family Planning. More than 20 countries pledged $4.6 billion to help increase access to birth control for women in developing nations. Three years later, French Gates started Pivotal Ventures, an investment and charitable firm focused on the issues she cared about. Four years after that, she published a memoir, The Moment of Lift. And now she’s going it alone. “Once Pivotal Ventures was up and running for three years, I knew I could do this on my own,” she says.

The first billion in giving since leaving the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation offers some clues as to the direction she now wants to go. Her focus is still getting women in power—in politics, in business, in tech, and, now, in media, but she’s widening her lens to work more globally, and being bolder. She’s spreading $200 million among 16 organizations that work to advance the rights of women and other underrepresented groups, including the Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund and the National Domestic Workers Alliance .

Melinda French Gates London Summit Family Planning

She’s also offered $20 million each to 12 individuals she believes are disrupters and charged them to pass it along to others. These include friends such as filmmaker Ava DuVernay , people she has worked with like Ardern, and people she has only met over Zoom, like Sabrina Habib , who runs low-cost childcare centers in East Africa. The recipients get to request up to $5 million for their own institutions and invest the rest in other people or organizations they admire. Two of these recipients are men, Richard Reeves and Gary Barker , who are trying to help prepare boys for a world where women are equal partners.

Ardern, who doesn’t yet know how she will allocate the money she has been assigned, except that it’s likely to be invested in the geographic region from which she hails, says the offer from French Gates came in mid-April, totally out of the blue. She was putting away clothes one evening when she glanced at her phone. “I got a personal message from Melinda saying, ‘Here’s my areas of interest. I believe you’re someone who will have seen meaningful places where we could have an impact. Will you help me?’ And ‘I’m trusting you to hand this over,’” says Ardern. “Who does that?”

A further quarter-billion dollars is going to a kind of contest, for which people will pitch ideas, using Lever for Change , a model she used before with another woman giving away her divorce settlement, MacKenzie Scott (formerly Bezos). While French Gates no longer partners with Scott, she acknowledges there are now some similarities in their methods, which lean into trust in people rather than pure adherence to data. But she prefers to stay more involved than Scott. “MacKenzie will literally do the grantmaking to the organizations and then she’s extraordinarily hands off,” says French Gates. “I try and coalesce a group of organizations around moving something forward.”

That leaves $310 million to give away. “I don’t know yet what I’m going to do with the rest,” she says. “That’s exciting. One of the things I feel like I’m on is a learning journey.” She repeats those words,  exciting  and  learning,  often.

One of the things French Gates has learned is that she’s more pro-choice than she thought. Previously, she had spoken in favor of—and funded—contraceptive access for women in countries where availability was low. Now, in part influenced by her daughters, she’s funding abortion-rights organizations, which the foundation never did. This has put her at odds with some in the Catholic Church, a faith she espouses. “Melinda French Gates could do much to help women and their preborn children on the national—and even international—level,” Carol Tobias, president of the National Right to Life Committee, told a Catholic news outlet. “Yet she has decided instead to pour money into the abortion industry.”

But to French Gates, the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn Roe v. Wade is a symptom of a bigger issue. “To have a law on the books since I was 9 years old, and to have it rolled back, and all the downstream consequences—like these women’s-health deserts now when we already have one of the highest maternal-mortality rates of high-income countries—I can’t not speak up about that,” she says. “To see that my granddaughter will have fewer rights than I do? That doesn’t make any sense.”

Another topic that has really got her goat over the years is that the U.S. is the only Western nation with no federal policy on family medical leave . One of the recipients of her largesse is New America , which does advocacy work in that area. “I want to push on that policy in a huge way,” she says. Rich as she is, she knows she can’t fund family leave for an entire nation; eventually the government will have to step in. She’s just going to try to clear away the obstacles, including the elected ones.

Which is why, noting that 60% of Americans agree that women should have access to abortion and 80% of Americans agree that the U.S. should have a policy about family leave, French Gates is turning her attention to politics. She’s funding centrist candidates from both sides of the aisle, especially women, and especially in local and state government, and putting money into turn-out-the-vote efforts in swing states. And she’s gone further. The Gateses long had a policy of not endorsing any politicians, on the theory that they must be able to work with any government that gets elected, but she’s clear on whom she’ll be voting for this year: President Biden. “There’s no chance I could vote for Donald Trump. Not a single chance,” she says. “Not after what he has done to women’s reproductive rights, and not after the heinous things he has said about women.”

After 27 years of marriage, the Gateses announced their divorce, midpandemic, in May 2021. It later emerged that Bill had had an affair with a Microsoft employee in 2000, leading to an internal investigation in 2019. He left the board in 2020. (“Bill Gates stepped down from the Microsoft board in 2020 to dedicate more time to philanthropic priorities including global health and development, education, and his increasing engagement in tackling climate change,” a foundation spokesperson told TIME.) He also spent time with Jeffrey Epstein , even after the latter’s first conviction. (Gates has said he regrets those meetings .) While both of those were factors, French Gates has said there was no one thing that led to the dissolution of the marriage. Since September 2022, Bill has been seen frequently with Paula Hurd, the widow of former Oracle co-CEO Mark Hurd .

There is zero need to feel sorry for French Gates. By all accounts she’s living her best life. “Getting a divorce is a horrible thing. It’s just painful. It’s awful when you realize you need one,” she says, then asked to correct herself from “horrible thing” to “hard thing” a minute later. But now that it’s over? “It has been wonderful,” she says with a tiny chuckle. “I’ll just leave it there.” She doesn’t leave it there. She’s skiing. She’s traveling to see her granddaughter and daughters (Jennifer, 28, and Phoebe, 21) in New York City and son (Rory, 25) in Washington, D.C. She’s going to Paris to watch her son-in-law Nayel Nassar compete as an equestrian in the Olympics, and on safari in Africa, one of her favorite things.

She’s allowing a few close friends to throw her a dance party for her 60th. She has two spiritual groups she loves (local mindfulness guru Tara Brach’s podcast is a favorite topic of discussion) and a long-term walking group with a cluster of her besties. And she is smitten with her new house, having never been a fan of the massive one her husband had built. “I live in a neighborhood. Now I can walk to little stores. I can walk to the drugstore, I can walk to a restaurant,” she says. “I absolutely love it.” Alas, it was considered imprudent for her to go to any open houses—a favorite weekend hobby in her 20s. Instead, she did a lot of searching on Redfin.

French Gates might even be dating. She says “of course” she’s willing to meet a new somebody, especially “somebody who’s open to learning and who’s vibrant, and who’s smart, and somebody who challenges me and that I challenge.” It seems a remarkably specific list, but when asked if there is somebody in the picture, she demurs. “Not that I’m ready to talk about.”

The foundation French Gates has just left is richer than some countries. It had an endowment of $75.2 billion in December 2023. It has given away $76 billion or so since 2000, including close to $8 billion in the past year. Its work reaches 48 states and 135 countries, and while its focus is global health, it also touches education, agriculture, water, climate, financial systems, gender equality, and family planning, among other things. Pivotal Ventures , on the other hand, is not a nonprofit and has no endowment, just whatever French Gates has. That’s reported to be $11.3 billion, on top of the $12.5 billion she was given for philanthropic purposes when she left the foundation—a stipulation of her divorce agreement. It’s not nothing, but scale is crucial in funding if you want to take big swings. Can she tolerate the downsizing?

French Gates at her desk in the Pivotal Ventures office

“I don’t see it honestly as a downsizing,” she says. “I was just ready to be able to have full decisionmaking control about where all the funds go.” She also felt the foundation was in a good place, and the work she was doing there on gender equity would continue. “I know it will continue because of the board, because of Mark [Suzman, the CEO], and Bill believes now fi...”—she seems to be about to say finally, but stops—“in women’s health, so it will continue.”

When she told her foundation colleagues she was leaving, she says, none of them tried to talk her out of it. Even Bill was resigned to it. “I think he said he would be willing to make substantial changes if it would help me stay,” she says, but “they knew once I’ve made a decision, I’ve made a decision."

“I’m grateful to Melinda for all her contributions to the Gates Foundation, where she was instrumental in shaping our strategies and initiatives," Gates told TIME in a written statement. "I’m certain she will have a huge impact through her future philanthropic work. I’m impressed with many of the grants she’s already announced for women’s health and economic empowerment, and hope we have the opportunity to collaborate again in the future.”

The struggle to bring equity to women was already under way before French Gates was born. It would be a mistake to call it a revolution, because it has been very slow and things have not fully turned around. But for many women in low-income countries, whose position was and is precarious, the foundation’s programs made an enormous difference, especially to their health. No country has ceased being grindingly poor without improving the lot of women ; it is now a tenet of international development that gender equality is macrocritical. French Gates is one of the engines that have driven this work.

People who have worked with the funding giant, who did not wish to be named because it might jeopardize their relationship, say she will be missed, both in the programming and the organization’s culture. The Gateses’ differing approaches made them a good team. Because French Gates was a co-chair, anybody coming to a meeting would know that in addition to bringing technological options, and data to support their approach, they’d be asked about how they were providing dignity, equity, and access to tools and funding for all the people they were working with. And after the meeting, French Gates would be the one emailing them a thank-you note.

On the other hand, said one younger aid worker, it was inspiring to see French Gates embodying the autonomy she had been trying to provide for women by choosing to forge her own path, focus on issues she deemed most vital, and distribute money in a way she regarded as equitable.

French Gates’ mother Elaine often told her daughter that if she didn’t set her own agenda, somebody else would. Several decades later, French Gates may be coming to terms with what that looks like. She no longer talks, for example, about empowering women. “I’ve stopped using that empowerment language, because we aren’t giving women their power—they have their power,” she says. “What I’m trying to do is make sure that women can step into their full power, that women see their power. It’s not something we give them. We have it. We’re born with it.”

When Bill and Melinda married, she wrote in her memoir , his parents gave them a sculpture of two birds “looking out intently toward an unknown place with their gaze eerily together.” She loved it, she wrote, because it represented a married couple looking to the future together. She put it right by the front door of the home. When they were dividing up the assets, he got the sculpture. “I didn’t ask for it,” French Gates says. “I didn’t want it.” She’s looking at a whole new horizon.

Correction, June 18: The original version of this story misstated how much money Melinda French Gates was giving to certain organizations. She is giving $200 million in total to 16 organizations, not $20 million to each.

Man dies in crash on i-90 in wickliffe, latest headlines, boats cruise seine river in rehearsal for paris olympics’ opening ceremony.

A total of 55 boats made the journey from Pont d’Austerlitz, named after a French military victory in 1805, to Pont d’Iéna, a stone’s throw from the Eiffel Tower, the nation’s most striking and best known landmark.

Officials are confident that the near four-hour ceremony will run like clockwork on July 26.

“Six months ago we had like 10 minutes delay on the timing and today we are very close, almost to the second to our targets,” Thierry Reboul, the executive director for ceremonies said. “So it is very satisfying. We’ve respected an extremely precise level of timing.”

On the day of the eagerly-awaited event, around 200 Olympic delegations will join the parade on more than 80 boats. They will make the journey from east to west, along a six-kilometer (3.7-mile) route which has become a major talking point — for its audacity as a unique open-air event and for its exposure to potential danger.

Security concerns led French President Emmanuel Macron to say in mid-April that the ceremony could shift to Stade de France if the threat level was too high. But Reboul said Monday that authorities are preparing for the big day as originally planned, with no alternatives being prepared at this stage.

There will be a final rehearsal, involving the full armada of boats, before the opening ceremony — one which is expected to bring 100 world leaders to the city’s embankments, where more than 300,000 people will watch.

“We will give our heart and souls to make it a great success for the French people,” France’s Sports Minister Amélie Oudéa-Castéra said Monday. “They deserve it.”

The rehearsal saw 10 police speedboats shadowing the convoy, as well as speedboats equipped with television cameras. There were armed police officers stationed at various points along the way. The boats crossed 16 bridges, passing by iconic landmarks such as the green-tinged Grand Palais — where fencing and Taekwondo events will be held.

On each bridge, a few dozen people watched attentively.

“Fifty-five? That’s a lot of boats,” said 49-year-old Rosa Gabriel. Taking a break between walking from the Louvre and Notre Dame Cathedral, she watched it from the Pont des Arts bridge — fondly known as Love Lock Bridge, with its thousands of personalized locks attached to the railings.

One tourist even mistook the scene for something else.

“Maybe they are making a movie,” said Driss El Kaoutari, a 42-year-old from Morocco who was on vacation in Paris with his daughter.

What people actually saw were empty vessels bobbing slowly by. But they will be full of life, color, sound and movement next month.

“You will have many delegation members on the boats with their uniforms and their flags,” Reboul said. “Around them there will be many other things, as you can imagine.”

The water itself has become a sensitive and thorny topic for the organizers and politicians heading into the July 26-Aug. 11 Paris Games. A whopping $1.5 billion investment has already been made to improve the Seine’s water quality, with Macron and Paris Mayor Anne Hidalgo both promising to take a dip.

This time, it was Oudéa-Castéra’s turn to give assurances about the river — where marathon swimmers and triathletes are set to compete during the Olympics.

She bristled a little when answering.

“Regarding the quality of the Seine’s water, we are confident. You shouldn’t ask us to be ready ahead of time,” Oudéa-Castéra said, adding that a new center for collecting waste will be opened next week.
