Bonjolea II, the eventual B class winner, comes off the open ocean during the closing of the Kaua‘i Channel Race off the Ninini Point Lighthouse buoy on Friday, Aug. 9, 2024.

NAWILIWILI — Bonjolea II, a Sydney 36, topped the field of 15 boats during the 2024 Kaua‘i Channel Race that wrapped up on Aug. 10 at Nawiliwili Small Boat Harbor.

Bonjolea II was first over the line when the race started under the auspices of the Kaneohe Yacht Club at the K Buoy located at the northwest end of Kaneohe Bay where the main shipping channel starts, said Doug Tiffany, a crew aboard Bonjolea II.

“The start was clean with no early-overs,” Tiffany said. “But following very closely was Wasabi, a Sydney 41.”

Dragon Fly, a Formula 40 Catamaran from the Nawiliwili Yacht Club took the lead and was quickly far ahead of Wasabi, Locomotion II, a TP52, and Bonjolea II.

“The pack of boats split soon afterwards, many heading on a more northwesterly route in search of heavier winds,” Tiffany said. “Bonjolea II put up their A2.5 combination Reacher/Runner Spinnaker, and their Spinnaker Staysail and continued with the rest of the pack, basically hugging the coach of O‘ahu until they reached Kahuku Point, the northernmost point on O‘ahu.”

At this point, several of the boats turned to the southwest, hoping to get a lift as they sailed toward Kaena Point.

“Bonjolea II put up their A2 downwind spinnaker and, in combination with their Spinnaker Staysail, plotted a course that went more or less straight across the channel towards Kaua‘i and the finish line at the entrance to Nawiliwili Harbor,” Tiffany said.

Sleeping Dragon, a Hobie 33 from the Kaneohe Yacht Club, caught up and passed Bonjolea II in pursuit of Wasabi. Stardust, a Wylie 46, was going faster than Bonjolea II and inched past about two-thirds of the way across the channel.

“Interestingly, 12 or 13 of the boats were always in sight of each other for the entire race, indicating how close the race would be,” Tiffany said. “Bonjolea II continued towards Nawiliwili Bay, but soon Bravura, a Farr 44, and Flying Tiger, the other Hobie 33 from the Kaneohe Yacht Club, came slowly up from the south, and Le‘ale‘a, a J100, came down from the north.”

NYC Rear Commodore Hu Mast and Race Official Stevie Mast, and race photographer Charlotte Ross manned the finish line where Dragonfly was first across at 2:57:23 p.m. from the 7 a.m. start time. Locomotion II followed an hour later at 3:56:05 p.m. Both of these boats had no correction factors, giving Dragonfly the First Boat to Finish perpetual trophy, and the First to Finish Multihull. Locomotion won the First to Finish Monohull perpetual trophy.

Wasabi crossed third overall and corrected to 9 hours, 47 minutes, 24 seconds for second place in the X class. She was followed by Sleeping Dragon crossing fourth and correcting to 9:44:59 besting Wasabi by three minutes for first place in the X class. Flying Tiger crossed at 6:31:56 p.m., nearly 30 minutes back of Flying Tiger. She corrected to 9:56:16 for third place in the X class.

Stardust gybed in front of Le‘ale‘a about a mile from the Ninini Point Lighthouse buoy and sailed to a sixth finish on a corrected time of 10:13:38 for a fourth place in the X class. Le‘ale‘a crossed seventh and corrected to 9:22:16 for first place in the A class.

Twenty-one seconds later, Bonjolea II crossed the line at 6:30:20 p.m. and corrected to 9:11:21 for first place in the B class.

“The last boat finished at 7:04:33 p.m., showing how close a race this was,” Tiffany said. “In the end, however, following the corrections being applied, Bonjolea II easily won their B class and corrected out 10 minutes, 57 seconds ahead of the 13 other monohulls to garner the coveted First Place Corrected-Monohull, and a spot on the perpetual trophy.”

The Kaua‘i Channel Race was started by the now defunct Hanalei Bay Yacht Club in 1973 as the Honolulu to Hanalei race. In 1978, the Nawiliwili Yacht Club was started and became a co-sponsor of the race. In 1983, NYC became a full sponsor when the Hanalei Bay Yacht Club closed its doors.

“So, this race has been run almost every year for about 51 years,” Tiffany said. “The race is one of the few actual downwind races conducted in Hawai‘i. It involves approximately 100 miles of open ocean with spinnakers flying most of the way.”

What happened to the Yacht Club boat that sunk? That would have been an interesting side story for this article…

The story doesn’t describe the perfect sailing conditions for crossing the channel. The conditions resulted in excellent sailing angles and lots of surfing the swell for many boats, under clear, sunny skies. A really fun race

garden island yacht club

The Garden Island Yacht Cub is situated on the northern side of this island and is accessed via a very long, well-marked channel running south down Barker Inlet. The water either side of this narrow channel is very shallow in places, so any keel boat straying outside the channel is likely to run aground. In addition, the channel itself is shallow in places, and access can therefore be tide dependent. Without good local knowledge it is best to transit the channel at mid-tide or higher.

The club is very friendly and welcoming for visiting yachts, and has both marina berths and moorings.  The contact details are –

Seek this Chicago man-made island, garden for trail-bound nature sanctuaries near downtown

Portrait of Joseph Dits

Chicago throbs with energy — people, architecture, this week's Democratic National Convention … and noise. So, on a recent vacation trip by train/bike, I gravitated to two of the most serene wild spots you’ll find, replete with native wildflowers, right in or near downtown.

One had been on my curiosity list for a long time. I knew that the manmade Northerly Island had been the former Meigs Field Airport, which was then converted to a green space on the Lake Michigan shore.

After taking the South Shore train to downtown with my bike, I ride my way south along the Lakefront Trail to the Museum Campus where the Field Museum of Natural History , Shedd Aquarium and Adler Planetarium sit. I ride out toward the planetarium, which sits on the island, which is connected to the mainland via a man-made causeway.

If you follow the trails south of there — past the parking lot, a big concert venue and yacht club — seek out the trails to the western side. There’s a parking lot for the island and a visitor center. Then the real treat is on the concrete path going south along the island. It wends between long, undulating hills, covered with native prairie wildflowers — most especially wild bergamot — and grasses. A five-acre pond rests in the middle. It feels as though I’m tucked into a secluded nature preserve. And there is no noise. Not one car beep.

Toward the southern end, I climb a dirt/gravel trail to a high point on the hill and find what arguably could be the best view of the city. It overlooks Burnham Harbor and its pleasure boats and looks beyond to the sweeping skyline. To the opposite side, I see Lake Michigan.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

The paved trail curls around the southern end and toward the eastern side, where a long embankment of rocks hides the lake. There are more great photo-worthy spots there along the paved trail, especially with the wildflowers. From there, the path continues north as a dirt trail.

This 120-acre city park is Northerly Island Park . The island itself was the brainchild of the city’s noted architect and planner, Daniel H. Burnham, who envisioned a series of manmade islands between Grant and Jackson parks, according to the city parks website . It became the site of the Century of Progress World Fair in 1933. (Some of the homes from that fair are preserved closer to us along the lake near Beverly Shores in the Indiana Dunes National Park.)

After a few years as a park, and contrary to Burnham’s vision, the Meigs airport was soon built, lasting until 2003. Then, thankfully, the city decided to convert it to a nature sanctuary.

Lurie Garden

Another calming sanctuary is nestled into Chicago’s Millennium Park. Look for the tall walls of evergreen hedges that surround the Lurie Garden . I have to leave my bike outside as I step slowly along the artful stone path, surrounded by colorful beds of varied flowers.

It’s as if I’d walked into a secluded room. All kinds of bees are occupied with the copious blossoms (not with me). Chatting with an assistant horticulturist, I learn that half of the plants are native, while the others aren’t invasive. They are listed with photos at www.luriegarden.org/plant-life .

The garden now has a couple of hives to provide pollinating bees, though it’s thinking about removing them to see if the resident pollinating insects would be enough.

I snapped photos of flowers with skyscrapers peeking out over the hedges. It is calm until I hear a symphonic choir begin to practice at the nearby amphitheater for an evening concert.

Bike the Drive

Sept. 1 presents another reason to take your bike to Chicago. Bike the Drive attracts thousands of cyclists to ride on a 15-mile stretch of DuSable Lake Shore Drive as it’s completely closed to car traffic. This all happens in the morning, starting at 6:30 a.m. CDT and with the course gradually closing to bikes between 10:30 and 11:15 a.m. CDT. You start and stop when you decide and do as much as you like.

It’s a hoot to roll among and chat with a wide array of cyclists while scanning open views of the skyline and Lake Michigan. This event, once a Memorial Day tradition, had been the inspiration for the beloved but long-gone Bike the Bend ride on South Bend and Mishawaka streets.

The ride includes rest stops and food. Cost is $78 per adult, $18 for ages 17 and younger. It raises money for the Active Transportation Alliance, an advocacy group for Chicago biking, walking and public transportation. Find details and registration at bikethedrive.org .

∎ Bikes on South Shore trains: Remember that the South Shore trains allow bikes aboard all trains out of South Bend all year round. Ask the attendants for the train car or cars that have bike racks (typically two racks). Find a full schedule at mysouthshoreline.com .

Granger’s new trail

On Monday, Friends of Granger Paths dedicated a new, quarter-mile trail that links the small Fountain Blue subdivision with Northpoint Elementary School . The Fountain Blue Trail allows kids and families to avoid riding directly on Cherry Road.

From North Point, the Granger Paths network links south to a trail along Adams Road to neighboring Mary Frank Elementary School and then west to Gumwood Road, which boasts a trail north to Redfield Street in Michigan.

The friends group is proud to have paved it just before school begins. President Gary Babcoke says the cost of some $40,000 was covered thanks to a generous gift from the Bike Michiana Coalition, along with support from the county and Penn-Harris-Madison School Corp.

And now, Babcoke says, Granger Paths is focused on what’s next — chiefly, how it can connect a potential new park at Anderson and Beech roads with a new trail to the existing trail system, which is a couple of miles away. Such a trail would also link other neighborhoods. Harris Township is exploring the possibility of a low-key park with dirt trails on a parcel of land owned by the county parks.

Granger Paths will host its next forum to gather input for its master plan from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Sept. 9, possibly at Northpoint Elementary.

Elkhart school path

The city of Elkhart also recently dedicated a new paved trail and enhanced lighting to provide safe walking and biking for students of Concord West Side Elementary School. The Benham Multiuse Path runs along Benham Avenue and Mishawaka Road from Hively Avenue to Old Farm Drive. This improves upon a grass walking path that the neighboring Anabaptist Mennonite Biblical Seminary had allowed on its property.

Beacon Heights bikes

Volunteers at the South Bend Bike Garage recently got kids rolling, too. They fixed up and donated 50 used bikes to young residents of the Beacon Heights subsidized apartments on South Bend’s northwest side. The Bike Garage, a bike co-op, remains a very busy place as volunteers teach folks to fix and affordably earn used bikes from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday nights at Angela Boulevard and Indiana 933.

Ready, set, explore

∎ Middlebury Riverfest: Paddle a bit, see wild fish and critters up close, do some art and learn a lot at this year’s free Riverfest in Middlebury, which has shifted to an evening program from 3 to 7 p.m. Aug. 24 at Riverbend Park , 511 E. Warren St. The brief, guided kayak trips on the Little Elkhart River will provide transportation back to the park. Soarin’ Hawk and Indiana Wild will show the critters, while an electro-fishing demonstration at 3 p.m. will safely pull fish from the river to see. Kids can make boats from recycled materials that will be provided, then race them. A local artist, Linda Pieri, will guide kids in painting eagles. There will be “train” rides through the park. And food trucks will sell eats. At the end of the festival, the movie “Finding Dory” will be shown.

∎ Barron Lake Triathlon: This race in Niles on Aug. 24 caters to kids and adults, and it features a clinic for beginners and youths from 4 to 6 p.m. Aug. 23 during packet pickup. The adult race offers a 500-yard swim, 15-mile bike ride and 3.1-mile run. The youth races for ages 6-11 include both competitive and non-competitive versions, each going for a 25-yard swim, 1.2-mile bike ride and half-mile run. The cost for adults is $75 per individual, $95 per team, and for youths is $30. For details and to register, visit barronlaketri.com .

∎ Bats and ice cream: See how a bat is safely caught in a mist net, then evaluated for scientific data in a program at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 5 at St. Patrick’s County Park in South Bend. This comes while you learn about the bat species found in Indiana. Follow up with a “bat nana split” as you watch bats exit the park’s red barn. The cost is $5 per person. Register by Sept. 2 at 574-654-3155.
