Click the picture to get to the boat's page The IOM Class The International One Metre class was created by Jan Dejmo, with the support of Graham Bantock and the Permanent Committee of the ISAF-Radio Sailing Division, and adopted by ISAF-RSD in 1988. The intent was to pull together a variety of "One metre" class rules from different countries, and provide for a common, restricted, inexpensive international class of stable, easily-built designs. The result is the most popular RC racing yacht class in the world. The class has enjoyed such success because competitive IOMs can be built by an ordinary modeller at home, and due to the class restrictions competitive boats remain competitive for a number of years. IOM rules The performance of a RC yacht depends on hull lenght, beam, displacement, sail area, bulb draft, ballast ratio and rig plan. The only parameter than can be freely changed is the beam, all others are restricted by the IOM class rules. Therefore it is primarily differing beams and positions of maximum beam, which distinguish the different IOM designs. In addition to performance factors, the class rules explicitly restrict certain materials and construction methods in order to keep the class inexpensive and able to be built by an amateur builder. Radio control is restricted to two channels. Appendages and sails can be made of any material. A competitive boat can be built at home.

International One Metre Class

The International One Metre (IOM) is the most popular RC racing yacht in the world and is raced in over 30 countries.

DSC 0931

The class was created in 1988 by Jan Dejmo aided by Graham Bantock and the Technical Committee of the IMYRU (predecessor of IRSA).  It has continued to grow steadily since its creation.

Although carbon fibre is allowed in the construction of the fin and rudder, construction of the hull must be of either wood or glass fibre. Spars shall be of alloy or timber and the sails are to ‘One Design’ sizes.

DSC 0904

The number of rigs is limited to three. This makes  the class very popular for amateur builders and many designers have plans for competitive boats. Builders who can supply kits for home completion or completed boats are plentiful.

The IOM class is managed by its own International Class Association, the IOMICA. Please visit the class website at  www.iomclass.org

Set Up and Sail

The V11 detailing is simple but effective. In conjunction with the V11 Set Up Guide, assembly is straight forward, and vital tuning information assists you to quickly understand and master your V11's potential

IMG_6609.jpg

Vickers RC Sailing build processes are well refined and thought out.

Our boats are light, stiff and clever,  keeping to a simple and effective philosophy around detailing

The V11 design is a hull, foils and bulb package to compliment the full range of conditions experienced in RC Sailing. The hull design has full volume forward and features the familiar chines and tumblehome of the modern IOM for reduced weight and windage, as well as good tracking characteristics. The V11 features our peaked style foredeck for efficient water shedding when buried downwind and a geometrically strong shape for the forestay and mast ram areas.

Foils are slippery and strategically positioned with the rig to balance the yacht. The V11s forgiving balance through the wind range, allows the skipper to focus on the race at hand, and not rely on micro steering to maintain a consistent VMG.

The rig sits solid on its deck stepped mast step, complimented at deck level with an encapsulating mast gate arrangement over the mast ram. The rudder tube is rigidly supported inside the moulded servo tray.

Hull construction is from E-Glass Fibreglass Cloth and High Grade Epoxy Resin.

The foils are Carbon Fibre Layup with High Grade Epoxy Resin.

Paint system is a 2 pot Urethane and the boat is thoroughly post cured before finishing.

The V11 Features-

Plastic main hatch access.

Ready to accept RMG Winch and Standard sized Rudder Servo

Bow Bumper attached.

Hardware is Bantock including an adjustable mast ram, adjustable mainsheet post and tiller arm.

All necessary fittings attached for standing and running rigging.

The V11 comes out of our workshop in Beach Haven, Auckland New Zealand and is ready to accept rigs and electrics.

We also make sails that can be added to the order, or ordered separately.

So hit the enquiry button to discuss delivery times and options.

We are ready to help.

IMG_6638.jpg

Essential to success in sailing comes down to the  Rig and how it is set up and tuned. The V11 comes with a Set Up Guide that covers all the expert information needed to set up like the guns. It specifies the hardware, construction and tuning information to get your rig and sails set up and sailing near optimum straight off the bat, so you can enjoy your racing and punch above your weight.

Include Sets of sails from Vickers RC Sailing and enhance the experience.

Netherlands wins gold despite nearly missing finish line during women's skiff race

The women’s skiff race in the 49erFX class ended in dramatic fashion. Odile van Aanholt and Annette Duetz from the Netherlands clinched gold, Vilma Bobeck and Rebecca Netzler from Sweden secured silver, and Sarah Steyaert and Charline Picon from France took bronze.

The Dutch team got off to a strong start and displayed impressive upwind speed, leading slightly at the first mark. The Americans were also performing well, rounding the first mark in fourth and the second mark in second. By the final mark before the finish, the Dutch were a length ahead of the U.S., with Sweden in third and France in seventh. It seemed like a straightforward finish: a short sprint to the line would secure gold for the Dutch and move the U.S. up the standings.

However, both the Dutch and Americans mistakenly thought they had crossed the finish line when they actually had 200 more yards to go. The Dutch misread the course, and the Americans followed their lead. Meanwhile, the Swedish crew correctly identified the finish line and sailed straight to victory. The Americans, not realizing their error, took down their spinnaker and stopped racing. The Dutch, belatedly recognizing their mistake, raced back to cross the line in third. The French finished sixth and believed they had won gold, while the Dutch team was devastated, thinking they had lost due to their mistake. The Americans were left perplexed.

The situation took a turn when the Dutch coach boat approached van Aanholt and Duetz, informing them through their tears that they had actually won gold. In disbelief, Duetz asked in English, “We won the gold?” After a stunned silence, the two sailors erupted with joy upon realizing the wonderful news.

Team USA wins lone medal in men's skiff

American sailors Ian Barrows and Hans Henken leave the Games with a bronze medal — the only medal for Team USA in sailing.

Barrows and Henken, distinguished All-American intercollegiate sailors from Yale and Stanford, excelled in precise boat handling under tight conditions. Their extensive experience in close racing proved invaluable in the biggest race of their careers. At the third mark, which concluded the windward leg, Barrows faced a split-second decision: whether to tack ahead of a swiftly approaching Swiss boat or to duck behind and risk losing a crucial position to avoid a potential foul. It was a high-stakes call.

Barrows chose to tack. The Swiss team protested, arguing that the maneuver was too close, but the on-the-water umpires quickly judged it to be legal, allowing the race to proceed. On the downwind leg, the Swiss team aggressively tried to block the American sails, potentially turning it into a grudge match after being outmaneuvered. For Barrows and Henken, it was frustrating to contend for clear air while also aiming to finish ahead of Ireland to secure the bronze medal.

Marit Bouwmeester makes history

Marit Bouwmeester of the Netherlands clinched the gold medal in the women's dinghy, solidifying her position as the most successful woman in Olympic sailing with an unbeatable lead going into the medal race. It was Bouwmeester's fourth Olympic medal in as many Games.

Denmark’s Anne-Marie Rindom , Bouwmeester’s nearest competitor in the Mediterranean waters of Marseille, effectively secured the silver medal, adding to the gold she won in 2021.

On the women's side, Great Britain's Eleanor Aldridge won Olympic kiteboarding's first-ever gold, with France's Lauriane Nolot securing silver and Annelous Lammerts of the Netherlands taking bronze in the women's event.

American Daniela Moroz finished fourth in the first-to-three final, as the medal favorite and No. 1-ranked sailor in the world was surprisingly kept off the podium.

After light winds early resulted in postponed races for the 12th time in 13 days, it was 23-year-old Austrian Valentin Bontus who claimed the first gold medal in men's Olympic kiteboarding. Slovenia's Toni Vodisek won silver and Singapore's Max Maeder took bronze.

The new 'Swift Boat?' Tim Walz's military service targeted by Trump campaign

WASHINGTON – Democratic vice presidential nominee Tim Walz's Army National Guard service has become an immediate target of Republican Donald Trump's campaign, with running-mate JD Vance, also a veteran, attacking Walz's retirement from the military prior to his battalion's deployment to Iraq.

Walz, the governor of Minnesota and a former congressman, joined the National Guard out of high school at 17 years old on April 8, 1981 and served until May 16, 2005. Walz has said he retired from the guard to run for Congress, which he did successfully in 2006.

The alert order for Walz's unit to mobilize for Iraq was received on July 14, 2005 − almost two months after Walz had retired − and the unit mobilized Oct. 12, 2005, according to the Minnesota National Guard. But according to past press statements, Walz appeared to know as early as March 2005 that his battalion could be sent to Iraq.

Vance raised Walz's departure from the military Wednesday while campaigning in Shelby Township, Michigan, comparing their military records. Vance joined the Marines in 2003 and served as a combat correspondent – or military journalist – until 2007. Vance was deployed to  Iraq  for six months in late 2005 to serve in public affairs.

"When the United States of America asked me to go to Iraq to serve my country, I did. I did what they asked me to do, and I did it honorably, and I'm very proud of that service," Vance said. "When Tim Walz was asked by his country to go to Iraq, you know what he did? He dropped out of the army and allowed his unit to go without him."

Vance added: "What bothers me about Tim Walz is the 'stolen valor' garbage. Do not to pretend to be something you're not."

Vice President Kamala named Walz her running-mate Tuesday , with the campaign highlighting his Midwest, working-class biography and military service.

Vance's attacks have drawn comparisons to the unsubstantiated "Swift Boat" claims against Democrat John Kerry in the 2004 presidential race against President George W. Bush. The group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth challenged Kerry's decorated Vietnam War record. Chris LaCivita, a senior adviser to the Trump campaign, led the Swift Boat campaign attacking Kerry in 2004 .

Vance seized on past remarks from Walz in support of gun control shared Tuesday on social media by the Harris campaign in which the governor said, "We can make sure that those weapons of war that I carried in war is the only place where those weapons are at."

"I wonder, Tim Walz, when were you ever in war?" Vance said Wednesday. "What was this weapon that you carried into war given that you abandoned your unit right before they went to Iraq?"

In a statement to USA TODAY, Harris campaign spokesman Ammar Moussa reiterated that Walz retired in 2005 to run for Congress, where he later chaired the House Veterans Affairs Committee.

In response to Vance saying Walz never carried a weapon into war, Moussa said: "In his 24 years of service, the Governor carried, fired and trained others to use weapons of war innumerable times. Governor Walz would never insult or undermine any American's service to this country − in fact, he thanks Senator Vance for putting his life on the line for our country. It's the American way."

A review of Walz's old website from his run for Congress − still preserved online − shows a March 20, 2005, news release from the Walz congressional campaign stating that the National Guard public affairs office on March 17 of that year announced a "possible partial mobilization of roughly 2,000 troops from the Minnesota National Guard."

According to the archived news release, the public affairs office notified that "all or a portion of Walz's battalion could be mobilized to serve in Iraq within the next two years."

Walz is quoted in the release saying in March 2005, "I don't want to speculate on what shape my campaign will take if I am deployed, but I have no plans to drop out of the race." The final line in the news release reads, "If called to duty, Walz would leave behind his wife Gwen and four year old daughter, Hope."

Moussa said the Harris campaign had no further comment.

Former Republican Rep. Adam Kinzinger of Illinois − a Trump critic, Harris supporter and veteran of the Air National Guard − pushed back at Vance's criticism.

"JD served honorably, but he wasn’t kicking down doors. He was in public affairs. Which again, is fine and honorable. Tim, after he was eligible for retirement, retired. People do that," Kinzinger wrote on X, formerly Twitter. "If it was a real problem he would have been 'stop lossed' and prevented from retiring."

A stop-loss refers to the involuntary extension of an individual's activity duty service enforced by the Defense Department.

"If JD Vance is going to go after Tim Walz, I would suggest he take from his own military training, his own military experience," said Maryland Gov. Wes Moore, a Harris surrogate and also a military veteran. "Do not start with trying to attack that someone raised their hand to serve this country."

Walz rose to the rank of command sergeant major, but because he did not complete additional course work at the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy before leaving the National Guard in 2005, he retired as a master sergeant.

"You get to sergeant major because you have a track record of taking care of your people," Moore said in an interview on MSNBC .

Walz mobilized with the Minnesota National Guard on Aug. 3, 2003, in support of Operation Enduring Freedom, whose primary mission was the Afghanistan War but also had counterterrorism roles in other regions.

His 1st Battalion of the 125th Field Artillery supported security missions in Europe and Turkey, according to a statement from Lt. Col. Kristen Auge, a spokesperson for the Minnesota National Guard.

Walz was stationed at Vicenza, Italy, during his deployment and returned to Minnesota in April 2004, Auge said.Walz started his service in the Nebraska National Guard and finished at the Minnesota National Guard.

Walz's Republican opponents in Minnesota have criticized his exit from the military in the past, including during his 2018 and 2022 runs for governor.

In an open letter in 2018 , Minnesota National Guard veteran Thomas Behrends accused Walz of pushing "embellished and selectively omitted facts" about his military service. The Minneapolis Star-Tribune reported that Behrends was passed over for the promotion to command sergeant major that went to Walz and described him as a "longtime critic of the governor."

Retired Maj. Gen. Randy Manner, who held top positions with the National Guard Bureau and said he does not know Walz but plans to vote for the Harris-Walz ticket, called the controversy manufactured. Walz would have filed his papers for retirement long before his unit received official notice that they were being mobilized for deployment. The retirement papers Walz filed take five to nine months to process, Manner said.

“The idea that a man who served his country honorably for 24 years somehow ‘cut and run’ because he retired from the Guard in his 40s to pursue his next phase of life is an insult to him and everyone else who also served their nation so honorably," Manner said.

Walz acknowledged he never saw combat in a 2018 interview with Minnesota Public Radio .

"I know that there are certainly folks that did far more than I did. I know that," Walz said at the time. "I willingly say that I got far more out of the military than they got out of me, from the GI Bill to leadership opportunities to everything else."
