SAILING YACHT A

SAILING YACHT A is an exceptionally unique 2017 build by Nobiskrug, measuring 142.80m (468'6"ft).

She is the ultimate embodiment of German superyachts built for the 22 nd  century.

Measuring almost 143 m and a gross tonnage of about 12,600 GT, she became one of the most impressive PYC superyachts in the world in terms of design and technology.

She is one of the world’s largest and the most advanced superyachts with unique features such as an underwater observation pod, hybrid diesel-electric propulsion system and state-of- the-art navigation systems. The luxury sailing yacht's three masts are the tallest and most highly loaded freestanding composite structures in the world. The mainmast towers 100 m above the waterline.

The smooth, lustrous silver metallic surfaces and nearly invisible windows give this yacht a futuristic look. World-renowned Philippe Starck created this unconventional design, which challenges the expectations of conventional aesthetics.  Nobiskrug high-tech building  technology made this fascinating design possible.

Steel hull and steel superstructure with high-tech composite fashion plates that can be formed into any shape or size, a technology Nobiskrug has developed during the past 15 years in co-operation with classification societies and special subcontractors.

Thanks to her striking looks and innovative technology SAILING YACHT A was unquestionably the most anticipated delivery of 2017. She definitely changes the upcoming landscape of the Nobiskrug fleet as well as the future of supersail.

“Born from the desire of the owner to push the boundaries of engineering and challenge the status quo of the industry, ‘SAILING YACHT A’ is undoubtedly one of the most visionary projects Nobiskrug has ever been involved in.” Holger Kahl, Nobiskrug Managing Director.

Indeed, beneath her commanding sails the Maltese Falcon offers a collection of dedicated living spaces which all exude a gentle and inviting calm. Creating a number of areas which merge seamlessly with the interior, Ken Freivokh provides guests with options when it comes to enjoy the sun-drenched cruising grounds of Maltese Falcon. With numerous tables and seating arrangements on hand from bow to stern, there’s flexibility for both formal and informal occasions. Perhaps the most impressive feature of the exterior, however, is the projector screen positioned behind the lower sail which doubles up as a screen to allow guests to enjoy a movie night under the stars. Interior Design

The interior of superyacht Maltese Falcon is every bit as impressive as the exterior, with a range of colourful finishings making it truly unique. Balancing contemporary artwork from the Owner’s own collection with more traditionally inspired furnishings, both the communal and guest spaces composed of high quality leather, wood, steel, and glass. The layout balances with form and function like just about every other aspect of the yacht, with an atrium amidships uniting the accommodation on the lower deck and the lobby found on the bridge deck. Complete with a dedicated reading room, full-beam dining room, and a highly spacious main salon, it’s clear that every need of those on board has been comfortably anticipated. Flanked by numerous windows and benefitting from skylights, the amount of natural light which spills into Maltese Falcon is certainly worthy of note.

Situated on the lower deck, the full-beam master cabin includes two walk in wardrobes, his and hers bathrooms, and Californian king-sized bed. With a massive and warm canvas by Squeak Carnwath occupying the wall, charterers are sure to feel well-rested when waking up in this private sanctuary. Up on the bridge deck, the VIP cabin is furnished with additional easy chairs and enjoys a private terrace which can be accessed via a large sliding door towards the aft. The remaining doubles are found on the lower deck, and, despite their size, are complete with all the entertainment options found in the master and VIP cabin.

Besides being able to catch the latest Hollywood blockbuster on one of her massive sails, Maltese Falcon keeps her guests entertained with a wealth of leisure facilities ranging from a dedicated reading room to a fully-equipped gymnasium. Morning Rundown: Obamas take shots at Trump, video shows storm sinking Sicily yacht, and most Americans in a decade on the job hunt

Video shows moments before superyacht went down in storm off Sicily

Newly released video captures a luxury superyacht being battered by a violent storm before it suddenly sank off Sicily with 22 people aboard Monday.

The grainy images obtained by NBC News and other outlets were recorded on closed-circuit television not far from where the Bayesian was anchored, about a half-mile from the port of Porticello, on Sicily’s northern coast .

The yacht's 250-foot mast, illuminated with lights and lashed by the storm, appears to bend to one side before it finally disappears and is replaced by darkness.

The speed with which a yacht built to handle the roughest seas capsized stunned maritime experts.

“I can’t remember the last time I read about a vessel going down quickly like that, you know, completely capsizing and going down that quickly, a vessel of that nature, a yacht of that size,” said Stephen Richter of SAR Marine Consulting.

British tech tycoon Mike Lynch and five of the 22 other people who were aboard the 184-foot vessel remain unaccounted for and are believed to be trapped in the Bayesian’s hull, nearly 170 feet underwater.

Officials confirmed Monday that at least one person, the ship’s cook, had died.

UK's vessel Bayesian

Superyachts like the Bayesian, which had been available for charters at a rate of $215,000 a week, are designed to stay afloat even as they are taking on water to give the people aboard a chance to escape, Richter said.

“Boats of this size, they’re taking passengers on an excursion or a holiday,” Richter said. “They are not going to put them in situations where it may be dangerous or it may be uncomfortable, so this storm that popped up was obviously an anomaly. These vessels that carry passengers, they’re typically very well-maintained, very well-appointed.”

Built by Italian shipbuilder Perini Navi in 2008, the U.K.-registered Bayesian could carry 12 guests and a crew of up to 10, according to online specialist yacht sites. Its nearly 250-foot mast is the tallest aluminum sailing mast in the world, according to CharterWorld Luxury Yacht Charters.

On Tuesday, Italian rescue workers resumed the search for Lynch and the five other passengers still missing: Lynch’s 18-year-old daughter, Hannah; Morgan Stanley International Chairman Jonathan Bloomer and his wife; and Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo and his wife.

“The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel,” Salvatore Cocina, the head of civil protection in Sicily, told Reuters .

The Bayesian is owned by a firm linked to Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, who was one of the 15 people rescued Monday after it capsized.

Divers of the Vigili del Fuoco, the Italian Corps. of Firefighters, near Palermo

“It’s extremely rare for a boat of this size to sink,” Richter said.

What’s not rare is the kind of storm that sank it , said Simon Boxall, senior lecturer in oceanography at Britain’s University of Southampton.

“People assume the Mediterranean is this rather calm and passive place that never gets storms and always blue skies,” Boxall said. “In fact, you get some quite horrendous storms that are not uncommon at this time of year.”

The president of Italy’s meteorological society has said Monday’s violent storm may have involved a waterspout, essentially a tornado over water, or a downburst, which occurs more frequently but doesn’t involve the rotation of the air.

Luca Mercalli, president of the Italian Meteorology Society, also said recent temperatures may have been a factor.

“The sea surface temperature around Sicily was around 30 degrees Celsius [86 Fahrenheit], which is almost 3 degrees more than normal,” Mercalli told Reuters. “This creates an enormous source of energy that contributes to these storms.”

The Mediterranean sailing vacation was designed to be a celebration for Lynch, who two months ago was acquitted by a San Francisco jury of fraud charges stemming from the 2011 sale of his software company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

Prosecutors alleged that Lynch, dubbed “Britain’s Bill Gates,” and Autonomy’s vice president for finance, Stephen Chamberlain, had padded the firm’s finances ahead of the sale. Lynch’s lawyers argued that HP was so eager to acquire Autonomy that it failed to adequately check the books .

Lynch had taken Morvill, who was one of his defense attorneys, on the luxury trip.

Chamberlain was not on the Bayesian.

In what appears to be a tragic coincidence, a car struck and killed Chamberlain on Saturday as he was jogging in a village about 68 miles north of London, local police said.

“Steve fought successfully to clear his good name at trial earlier this year, and his good name now lives on through his wonderful family,” Chamberlain’s lawyer, Gary Lincenberg, said in a statement .

A Waterspout Was Seen When a Luxury Yacht Sank. What Is It?

Witnesses reported seeing the tornado-like phenomenon hit the Bayesian, a sailing yacht that sank off the coast of Sicily on Monday.

  • Share full article

The Bayesian sailing yacht

By Eve Sampson

What caused the sinking on Monday of a sailing yacht carrying the British billionaire Mike Lynch and 21 other people off the coast of Sicily is still unknown. But some attention has focused on observations by witnesses, who described seeing a small tornado-like column known as a waterspout forming over the water during an abrupt and violent storm as the vessel sank.

Fifteen passengers on the 180-foot yacht, the Bayesian, escaped on a raft before being rescued by a neighboring cruise ship. The body of the ship’s cook was recovered on Monday and six people remain unaccounted for , including Mr. Lynch and his daughter Hannah, according to officials with Sicily’s civil protection agency.

Prosecutors in the nearby city of Termini Imerese have opened an inquiry into the cause of the sinking.

Here is what to know about waterspouts, a surprisingly common weather phenomenon that may have helped sink the luxury yacht.

What are waterspouts?

Waterspouts are columns of spinning air and moisture — similar to tornadoes over water, according to the National Weather Service .

While some form in fair weather, and are aptly called fair weather waterspouts, another more dangerous variety called tornadic waterspouts develops downward from a thunderstorm. These tornadic waterspouts can either form as regular tornadoes over land and move out to sea, or form in a storm already over a large body of water, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Association .

Fair weather waterspouts are weak, often dissipate quickly and do not cause major damage, according to the agencies, but tornadic waterspouts are more often associated with high winds, dangerous and frequent lightning, and hail. The Italian authorities recorded strong winds and intense lightning activity at the time the yacht went down.

How common are waterspouts?

Experts say waterspouts may be more common than tornadoes, but because oceans are so vast, they are more difficult to track — and as difficult to predict.

“The Mediterranean is possibly one of the places where waterspouts are most likely around the world due to the warm ocean surface and a climate that is very susceptible to thunderstorms throughout the summer and autumn,” according to a statement by Peter Inness, a meteorologist at the University of Reading in the United Kingdom.

Mr. Inness pointed to a 2022 study by scientists from University of Barcelona , which found that waterspouts occurred more frequently over warmer sea surfaces. The North Atlantic ocean has been unusually hot for over a year, repeatedly reaching record highs for the time of year , according to data from the oceanic association.

The International Centre for Waterspout Research on Monday said on X , the platform formerly known as Twitter, that it had confirmed 18 waterspouts near Italy in recent days, and several fishermen in the area of the accident told Italian media that they had witnessed a waterspout near the yacht.

What may have happened?

Karsten Börner, the captain of the nearby boat that rescued the 15 passengers, said in an interview that he saw the Bayesian about 490 feet away before the wind and lightning picked up.

While it was difficult to see what happened amid the storm, “my theory was that she was capsized first and then went down over the stern,” he said.

Towering over 237 feet tall, the Bayesian mast was one of the tallest aluminum masts in the world and it also had a special keel that could be raised or lowered, according to its manufacturer, Perini Navi. A keel is the downward-extending centerline underneath a boat that can help stabilize the vessel.

“In this case, having a tall aluminum mast would not make it the safest port to be in case of a storm,” said Andrea Ratti, associate professor of nautical design and architecture technology the Politecnico di Milano.

He added that “a lot of questions will remain until we have other elements at our disposal.”

Elisabetta Povoledo contributed reporting.

One person died and six people were missing after a luxury yacht sank Monday in Italy off the coast of Palermo, the capital of Sicily, after a sudden storm hit the area, according to Italy's coast guard.

The Bayesian, a 184-feet-long, British-registered sailboat, went down just before sunrise, capsizing its 22 passengers and killing one man, the ship's cook, t he coast guard said in a statement. On Monday, rescue teams identified the body as Antiguan citizen Ricardo Thomas.

Of the 15 passengers rescued, eight were taken to a local hospital for treatment and were in stable condition, local news reported. A 1-year-old was among those rescued.

"We are providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families following an incident in Sicily and are in contact with the local authorities," the U.K Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said in a statement emailed to USA TODAY.

The people missing were American, British, and Canadian nationals.

What caused the Bayesian to sink?

The ship sank after unexpectedly strong storms recently dumped heavy rainfall, causing flooding and landslides, in parts of the country. Among those missing are British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch, and his daughter, a person familiar with the rescue operation told Reuters.

Jonathan Bloomer, chairman of Morgan Stanley International, and Chris Morvillo, a lawyer at Clifford Chance who represented Lynch in a  U.S. trial , were among the missing. The wives of both men were also unaccounted for, said Salvatore Cocina, head of civil protection in Sicily.

"The fear is that the bodies got trapped inside the vessel," he told Reuters.

The yacht was owned by Lynch's family and had 22 people on board when it sank just before sunrise. The captain of a nearby ship told Reuters his crew rescued some survivors from a life raft, including three seriously injured.

"We managed to keep the ship in position and after the storm was over, we noticed that the ship behind us was gone," Karsten Borner said. The other boat "went flat on the water, and then down," he said.

"A little baby and the wife of the owner" were rescued, while the ship's owner and a child were missing, he said.

The boat was located 160 feet under the water and divers were deployed to inspect the wreck, according to the coast guard.

The search-and-rescue operation continued on Monday morning, a Reuters live feed showed . A helicopter and four coast guard ships were at the scene on Monday morning, according to the coast guard.

Bayesian had set sail off Amalfi Coast in July

Prosecutors in a nearby town have opened an investigation into the events leading up to the ship sinking.

The Bayesian set off for Palermo from Positano, a village on Italy's southern Amalfi Coast, on July 30, according to marinetraffic.com . It last docked in the town of Milazzo, in Messina, on Wednesday, according to VesselFinder.

The ship has the tallest aluminum mast in the world, according to Perini Navi , its manufacturer. It was built in 2008.

Divers have reached the area where the cabins are located, according to reports.

The spaces inside the ship are extremely narrow and difficult to manoeuvre within, Italian news outlet Corriere Della Sera said.

Objects floating in the water have made it "difficult to fully explore the cabins".

As such, there is no news as of yet on the missing tourists, who are thought to be inside the cabins, the media site reported.

Solo round-the-world yachtsman Tony Bullimore survived for four days by sheltering in an air pocket when his vessel capsized in the Southern Ocean in 1997.

His yacht, the Global Exide Challenger, was one of two to capsize in rough seas about 900 miles from Antarctica and 1,400 miles from the Australian coast during the Vendee Globe race.

He survived for four days in an air pocket inside the upturned hull with just a bar of chocolate and some fresh water for sustenance.

Experts have speculated air pockets could have formed as the Bayesian superyacht sank during a storm off the coast of Sicily (see post at 6.30am)

Bullimore swam out from underneath the vessel after crewmen from the Australian Navy frigate HMAS Adelaide banged on the hull.

The former Royal Marine, who died in 2018 aged 79, suffered mild hypothermia, a fractured tooth, abrasions to his hands, frostbite on his forehead and fingertips, and moderate dehydration.

An upgraded underwater drone has been deployed at the site of the wreckage.

Earlier, the Italian coast guard reported it was using a drone with a two-hour underwater capability on the seabed, 50m deep.

The new robot can stay underwater for six to seven hours at a depth of 300m.

By comparison, divers who can only remained submerged at that depth for around 12 minutes.

The drone can record detailed videos and images, and will be used to reconstruct the accident for the Italian public prosecutor's office.

A team of four British inspectors from the Marine Accident Investigation Branch (MAIB) has arrived in Porticello, where they are expected to look at the site where the yacht sank.

They will carry out a "preliminary assessment" today, after arriving yesterday, PA reports.

They are looking into the incident because the Bayesian was flying a British flag - but the Italian Coastguard said the MAIB was not involved in the search and that it did not request assistance.

Spokesman Vincenzo Zagarola said: "Even if they come... the searches are carried out by the Italian authorities. Initiative [was] not requested by us."

A remote-controlled underwater vehicle (ROV) is being used to help with the search for the missing.

The depth of the wreck means divers can only spend around 12-minutes underwater - some of which is used just to descend or ascend.

They are also being hampered by the amount of furniture and other debris in the boat.

The ROV, however, is capable of operating on the seabed autonomously for more than two hours, according to the  Italian Coast Guard.

Marine investigator James Wilkes earlier told Sky News (see 9.15am post) the vehicle will be able to scan the wreck and use CCTV to find an access point.

This will make diving and the recovery of any bodies that may be in the yacht much safer for the dive teams.

Images show the search and rescue operation near the Porticello Harbour on the Sicilian coast.

Inspections of the yacht's hull took place after search crews arrived at around 6.30am local time.

A boat carrying divers was seen leaving the harbour at around 10.30am local time.

Mike Lynch's disappearance as he celebrated winning his US criminal trial after 12 years of fighting to clear his name is a "Shakespearean sort of tragedy", his friend says.

British entrepreneur Brent Hoberman, who has known Mr Lynch for 28 years, describes him as a "bit of a boffin" who was "quick-witted and smart" with an "infectious love of technology".

He says he asked his friend "the coward's question" before he stood trial for fraud in the US, accused of overstating the value of his company Autonomy when he sold it to technology firm Hewlett-Packard in 2011.

"I said, why don't you go somewhere and live somewhere which doesn't have an extradition treaty with the US?"

But Mr Lynch said "because I'm innocent, I'm going to stand my ground" and felt he had a better chance of acquittal than the 0.5% he was given, says Mr Hoberman.

"What an ordeal. This is a Shakespearean sort of tragedy," he adds.

"Somebody who spent 12 years defending their name, they just clear their name, they are going on a trip with the team who helped them do that to celebrate and then a sort of one in a million disaster hits their boat."

Mr Hoberman says he still hopes his friend "will have an amazing second act" and those who know him are praying for a miracle.

"God, what a amazing ending that would be," he says.

Two crew members who survived the disaster have said it is a "miracle" they are still alive, according to reports.

Leah Randall, 20, from South Africa, was photographed leaving the coastguard headquarters on Monday, alongside fellow crew member Katja Chicken, 22, from Germany.

The Italian news agency ANSA reports they were in tears in the hall of the Domina Zagarella hotel in Santa Flavia, which has become the headquarters of police and rescuers and where they are staying with other survivors.

"We are alive by a miracle," they said, while one added: "It was terrible," according to ANSA.

Ms Randall’s mother Heidi Randall previously told Sky News: "I'm beyond relieved that my daughter's life was spared by the grace of God.

"It doesn't make it any easier living with the heartache of those who have lost their lives or are missing.

"My very deepest condolences to the chef's family as they formed a great friendship."

The Bayesian yacht was the victim of a "black swan event", says the head of the Maritime Search and Rescue Council.

A black swan event is a term used to refer to a high-impact, rare incident that is difficult to predict, but is often rationalised in retrospect as having been inevitable.

Matthew Schanck says: "Looking at the extreme weather, if it was a waterspout, which it appears to be, it's what I would class as like a black swan event."

Waterspout is the name for a tornado-like rotating column of air spawned from the base of a cloud, usually during a thunderstorm.

"Even outside of the maritime industry, all industries struggle with the black swan events."

Mr Schanck says he is confident the authorities will "get to the bottom" of what caused the shipwreck, thanks to the accounts of survivors, witnesses and examination of the ship.

Search and rescue teams will be trying to identify if any more survivors could have escaped from the yacht, says marine investigator James Wilkes.

Speaking to Sky News, he says they will want to get into cabins as quickly as possible to "identify whether there is anybody still left on the vessel or whether the missing people could have escaped from the vessel and be somewhere else".

The "safety of life at sea" will be a priority, he says, and the depth of the wreck at around 50m underwater means divers can only spend around ten minutes down there at a time, with their work further hampered by blocks to passageways.

But remote operating vehicles will be able to scan the wreck and use CCTV to find an access point to make diving and the recovery of any bodies much safer for the teams.

Mr Wilkes says it looks like the boat was hit by a "very intense and significant" weather incident and investigators will be looking at how seawater flooded into the very large yacht, which has a lot of open deck space.

He says "it's shocking and disturbing" how quickly the yacht went down, adding that investigators will be looking at physical evidence as well as talking to witnesses and survivors to confirm the theory.
