Yacht Club of Sea Isle City has Great Views, a Stylish Clubhouse and a Long Waiting List for Membership

Panoramic views of the coastline unfold for miles and miles from the outdoor decks at the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City.

Lagoons, marshlands and wildlife abound in this serene setting. Follow the coast and you’ll see the towns of Avalon and Stone Harbor in the distance. On a clear day, even the water towers of Wildwood about 20 miles away are visible.

But one thing you won’t see here are yachts. Sure, there are plenty of boats snugly tied up in their slips, but not what you would consider glamorous yachts. You know, those huge, palatial pleasure craft crowding the swank playgrounds of the super-rich, like Saint-Tropez and Monaco.

“In the modern sense of yacht, we’re yachtless. I sometimes say we’re a drinking club without a yacht problem,” joked Jim Collins, general manager of the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City.

But, as Collins also noted, “If you look at the definition of a yacht, it is any boat that is for pleasure and not for business.”

So by that standard, the YCSIC has plenty of yachts. The average size of the club’s 32 boat slips is 24 to 26 feet long. The biggest one is 36 feet.

The centerpiece of the YCSIC is the stylish, gray clubhouse that was built in 2013 at a cost of $3.2 million. The two-story building contains 10,400 square feet of space and is anchored by a formal dining room that can host weddings and other special events. Amenities also include a casual bar and restaurant.

The clubhouse overlooks the bayside tip of Venicean Road. Its wraparound outdoor decks allow members to enjoy expansive views of the shoreline and quaint waterways.

“The sunsets are amazing,” Collins said.

The new building replaced the former clubhouse, dating to 1940, that fell victim to old age and structural problems. The crumbling landmark was demolished in 2012 to make room for construction of its much-larger successor.

Collins explained that the new clubhouse has boosted the YCSIC’s popularity. There is a waiting list of about 300 people for membership in the private club. Would-be members can potentially wait for seven or eight years before they are admitted, compared to one or two years when the old clubhouse still existed. Membership is capped at 525 to avoid overcrowding.

When asked to describe the typical reaction of aspiring members to the long waiting list, Collins said, “The most common response is, ‘I’ll be dead then.’ But I tell them to eat right and exercise and we’ll see you then.”

The club has established offseason membership for 75 people. It gives them access to the facilities from October to late May and is considered a foot in the door to full membership. The wait time for offseason membership is one to two years, Collins said.

Founded in 1940, the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City is not to be confused with the now-defunct Sea Isle City Yacht Club. The old Sea Isle City Yacht Club, located at 60th Street and the bay, reserved legal rights to that name as part of its formal charter, Collins said.

“That yacht club disbanded,” he said. “Its building burned down. The club collapsed around the Great Depression.”

In 1940, a group of businessmen wanted to attract more visitors to Sea Isle, so the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City was born. Early on, it offered sailing lessons, powerboat racing and an array of social functions. The social activities were based in Philadelphia during the winter and shifted to Sea Isle in the summer, Collins said.

The yacht club still offers sailing lessons, even to nonmembers.

“We get a lot of families from other towns for our sailing lessons,” Collins said.

John Halfpenny, a full-time Sea Isle resident and retired businessman, has been a club member for more than 10 years. He keeps his boat in storage and is looking to sell it, so for him the club’s social activities are the main attraction.

“It’s a nice family atmosphere. It’s pretty much the place to be in Sea Isle,” he said.

Halfpenny and his wife, Pat, enjoy bringing their children and grandchildren to the club, especially for the family-friendly theme parties. Last Sunday, they were joined by four of their grandchildren for a “Coney Island Night” party in the dining area.

Boaters like the club’s location on Venicean Road. The surrounding lagoons give them easy access to the Intracoastal Waterway, a gateway to the ocean.

“For me, it’s a convenient place to maintain my boat,” said Fred Walker, a 10-year club member who has a summer home in Sea Isle and lives in Collegeville, Pa.

Walker and his longtime friends Stan Kowalczyk and Charlie App spent Friday morning together fishing and crabbing. They brought back one flounder.

Walker, Kowalczyk and App, all retired, have been neighbors for 30 years in Collegeville. Their families have done quite a bit of traveling together, including trips to the Caribbean.

On Friday, it was a fishing trip out on Walker’s 22-foot boat that brought the three friends together again. They launched from the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City. And they didn’t need a yacht to have a good time.

You need to be a member or guest of a member for admittance. Excellent, friendly waitstaff and bar tenders. The top floor "Crows Nest" has a large bar, outdoor seating, and a large pub food menu. The menu changes often, has a good selection, a wide price range. The soups, particularly the seafood chowder, are always excellent.

Love this place. The sunset will take your breath away. The beverages are well priced. You do need to join the club or be a guest of a member to come here. I store my kayak here and have used the club kayaks as well. It's a great place to launch from. I am going to try some sailing lessons some time before the end of the summer. The people are nice and the staff is very accomodating. They strive to know everyone's name. I am definitely glad I joined, the dues are relatively inexpensive, but there is a very long waiting list. We were on it for two years and we just got in at the beginning of the summer of 2014.

One of the worst dinners ever! Although the servers are very pleasant, they are inexperienced and incompetent. We were never given a napkin, silverware or water until after the food was served and then we had to ask for it. No salt or pepper provided until we flagged down someone to request it. Our drinks were served without a napkin or coaster and the moisture leaked all over the table. Every one of the wines we selected were sold out and the glasses we selected were served about 15 minutes too late. We were never given rolls which were supposed to part of the menu selection. I ordered the prime rib medium rare and was given a big grey slab of beef - not even sure it was prime rib - chewy and not edible. The views are spectacular but not worth the mess. If you want a view, go to the Beach. If you want dinner, go somewhere else.

It is a very kid and family friendly restaurant with a deck that overlooks the beautiful bay. You must be a member to dine at the Yacht Club, but it is definitely worth it! It is an affordable restaurant. The employees are super nice and care about their customers! I definitely recommend getting a membership and dining at the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City. There is a great mix of people there and everybody is kind and friendly! There are weddings and special events held there sometimes! There is also seating on the deck so you can enjoy the beautiful weather and view! The Yacht Club is my favorite restaurant and for a very good reason! The food is beyond amazing and the chef takes pride in his job! I enjoy the inside and outside of the Yacht Club because it has a very homely feel. It is nice to step outside to either eat or get some fresh air! I recommend getting a membership and eating at the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City! It is my favorite restaurant!

Simple, Classic Details for a Sweet, Modern Bride

Julia’s details may have been simple, but they were so classic and elegant, and you could tell how much they all meant to her!  From the moment I saw her Maggie Sottero dress, I knew that Julia would look absolutely breathtaking in it! (Spoiler alert – she really did!!)

Getting Ready with the Girls at a Private Residence in Sea Isle City, NJ

Julia and her girls arrived back at the house, after a morning of pampering at the Fusion Salon. Each girl looked so beautiful, and their hair and makeup was perfect with their burgundy bridesmaids dresses! Julia’s mom and sister helped her to get ready, while the rest of the bridesmaids and her future Mother in Law were waiting in the Family room for the reveal!  There were so many happy tears shed!

Getting Ready with the Guys at a Private Residence in Sea Isle City, NJ

Meanwhile, the guys were on the other side of the island, just hanging out, drinking some Pellegrino, and waiting for the festivities to begin!

The Story of Julia and Nick

Nick and Julia met while studying abroad in Beijing (which is where they are currently honeymooning!!).  He was at school in Cleveland and Julia was in Baltimore, and they both had chosen Beijing for their Junior Fall Semester abroad!  A few days after arriving, the group of students took a 3 week Silk Road trip across China. Two weeks into the trip, a group of them had gone to a Karaoke bar. Nick and Julia talked the entire way there, as well as all throughout the night.  There was a spark between them, as shortly after returning to Beijing, they were inseparable!

Over the next year and a half, they successfully endured a long distance relationship and visited one another as often as they could! After graduation, they both moved to Florida for their graduate programs!  It was in Florida, in 2017, that Nick proposed to Julia – at the China Pavilion in Epcot!

A Meaningful Ceremony at Sacred Heart Church in Avalon, NJ

Julia and Nick said their vows at a beautiful jersey shore church that turns 90 years old this year! Every moment was planned perfectly, and they were pronounced husband and wife!

Bridal Party Photos at the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary

Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary is a 21.5-acre bird sanctuary and nature preserve in Stone Harbor, Cape May County, New Jersey.  When heading down the shore, you’d never expect to have such a beautiful, serene place right on the middle of the island!  We had a great time capturing the people that mean the most to Julia and Nick in this beautiful location!

Although, Julia and Nick were getting married down at the Jersey Shore, they didn’t want the typical beach photos.  So, when I recommended the Stone Harbor Bird Sanctuary, they were so excited! We walked through the Egret Espy Path, through whispering pine trees, over a beautiful footbridge, and through the intricate, artistic remnants of white spruce.  Julia and Nick were such a joy to capture, and truly made our job easy!  There is so much love between these two, and it is undeniable!

A Fun Reception with their Family & Friends at the Yacht Club of Sea Isle City

The Yacht Club of Sea Isle City is located in the Bay.  The building overlooks the water and has absolutely breathtaking views of sunset! From the staff to the food, the YCSIC does not disappoint!  Julia and Nick chose to have the Big City Band Philadelphia as their entertainment for the evening, and gosh, it was a great choice!  We always LOVE bands at weddings, and they were phenomenal!  I think the dance floor was full all night!
