Why Choose TYS Recruitment?

Testimonials, what our crew say, edward, bosun.

I had the pleasure of working with Taryn recently, and I must say, her professionalism and expertise surpassed all expectations. From the moment we connected, it was evident that Taryn was dedicated in making sure the boat was the right fit for me. Taryn demonstrated exceptional communication skills throughout the entire hiring process. Tayrn promptly kept me informed with the boat movements and made the whole process very easy.

Claudia, Stewardess

I got in contact with Eloise at TYS Recruitment regarding a temp job. The communication with Eloise was outstanding. She quickly picked up my contact and she gave me a good overview of what the job implied. She made sure that both parties were happy with each other. I would highly recommend her as she has a very friendly and positive approach. She doesn’t hold you on the line and she cuts to the chase, which is very appreciated in this industry.

Victoria, Sole Stew

Taryn has been exceptional in every step of the process from the initial reach out to the phone interview and to my placement in my current position. She was extremely informative about the position and the boat and continued to check in with me throughout the final interview and even as I am still on board. She really did find the perfect “home” for me with the boat, crew, Captian and owners. You have an amazing lady working for you and I can’t thank her enough for making this such an awesome experience!

Lauryn, Deck/Stew

Out of my three years in yachting, this is the first time I’ve gotten a position through working with an agent. After seeing a position I was interested in, messages, calls, responses and communication were also timely and fluid. It was a quick process that landed me a job in my favorite crew and program yet! Thanks to Taryn, I’m working in a great program with the best crew & camaraderie I’ve experienced to this date

What Our Clients Say

Thomas, captain.

Taryn at TYS did a great job with communicating the Captain and Stewardess Job available while providing a smooth transition onboard. The   resources of stewardess online training (through the sister company, The Yacht Stew Academy), progressed a green stewardess into a sole stewardess on a 112’ very quickly. Highly recommend TYS.

Arina, Chief Stewardess

The Yacht Stew Recruitment is the best recruitment agency I have worked with, I can highly recommend them. I recently needed to recruit a stewardess for a third interior in my team and was looking for a very specific person to fit our boat. Gemma and her team made this process so easy and left no stone unturned. They immediately knew what I was looking for and they really narrowed it down to great quality candidates. They checked in with me continuously following up on the stewardess they have placed for us.

Toni, Chief Stewardess

My experience with TYS Recruitment has been absolutely amazing. The amount of CV’s that came through, the way everything was laid out was highly efficient. Eloise constantly stayed on top of everything and even helped the green stews to understand their joining contract and SEA. Just amazing! TYS Recruitment most definitely stands out as my preferred agent.

Kate, Chief Stewardess

I asked TYS Recruitment to assist me in the hiring of a new stew. The team didn’t waste anytime diving in and asking me what kind of Stew I’m looking for and about the program of the vessel. The detail and time spent ensuring the candidates put forward were a complete match was evident. I gained a wonderful new Stew who fitted in very well. They were professional at all times and ensured I was comfortable and happy throughout the whole process. I will not hesitate to use The Yacht Stew again in the future!

RECRUITMENT - TRAINING - COMMUNITY - AUTHORITY

As the leading jobs board in the yachting industry...

Our mission has always been simple - " we help people find life changing dream jobs and save our clients time and money finding exceptional candidates ".

Steve & Daryl

Antibes, 2009. A British yachtie (Steve) was one year into his yachting career. Frustrated by the experience of finding work and available yacht jobs he set about founding Yotspot to change the way people found work, crew, and training within the yachting industry forever.

It was 2 years later when a chance encounter in La Ciotat led to Steve bumping into an old University friend Daryl who was working as Bosun on a 56m motor yacht. This serendipitous moment led to Daryl investing in Yotspot and moving ashore in the summer of 2013, setting up operations from his flat. Steve followed shortly thereafter, and both moved into their office HQ in Ocean Village, Southampton in 2014, leaving their sea legs behind them. Yotspot had landed.

The goal behind Yotspot has always been simple. Allow crew and yachting professionals to connect directly with employers, and for yachts to find great crew in a fast and efficient manner. Fast forward to today, and Yotspot is now the leading jobs board for the yachting industry. It helps to connect not only yacht crew looking for their next role, but also yachting professionals looking to further their career within the wider yachting community, both ashore and at sea.

Testimonials

“We are delighted to have finally concluded our search for a CFO and want to thank you for all your assistance in finding and securing the right candidate. The only way this has succeeded so smoothly has been due to your excellent communication with both us and the candidate to ensure we always knew where we were, what information was needed, arranging interviews and meetings etc. Your professional approach is greatly appreciated, and we will have no hesitation in contacting you again for any positions that become available.”

Managing Director, Yacht Management Business

“Following a long chat in August, Simon promised me he would find a suitable position in the future although made me aware that it may take time. In early October he contacted me about an operations manager position with a management company and within 2 weeks I was offered the position – Simon worked tirelessly with regard to reference checking and communication with the management company in order to get me the initial interview and I can’t recommend him highly enough as a recruitment specialist.”

Former Captain and now Operations Manager

“After I applied for a job with Quay Crew, Simon got in touch to relay what the job entailed and really took the time to get to know me and ascertain my expectations. During the negotiation phase there were a few issues that cropped up but Simon couldn’t have been more helpful in trying to bridge the gap which eventually ended up in an offer of employment for me. I have been in my new position for just over 5 weeks now and loving it. Simon has been in touch to ask how I am getting on and also offering his continued support. Can honestly say that it was a pleasure.”

Former Chief Engineer and now Technical Manager

10 Best Movies About Being Lost At Sea

  • Lost at sea films bring a new level of suspense and terror due to the vastness of the ocean and the isolation of its characters.
  • Many of these films are based on true stories, adding to their chilling realism and making them more terrifying for viewers.
  • Visual elements play a crucial role in depicting the threats faced by characters in lost at sea films, adding to the intensity and impact of the stories.

Survival films already do a great job at inciting fear in audiences, but when the films are set in the middle of the ocean, there's a whole other layer of suspense and tension that gets introduced. Unlike survival films that involve collapsing buildings or natural disasters, films where characters are lost at sea tend to feel severely threatening. The best lost at sea films have brilliant visual elements that translate to audiences just how vast the ocean is and how alone its characters are.

Just like survival films set on the ground, lost at sea stories feel uncomfortably realistic. For audiences fearful of being in a similar situation themselves, the fact that many lost at sea films are based on true stories doesn't help. Both real-life and fictional encounters with harsh storms and large, frightening sea creatures appear plausible when they are brought to life on the big screen. No matter the source of these stories, the best lost at sea films prove why the subgenre has some of the most chilling and gripping films to watch.

10 Survival Movies Based On Thrilling True Stories

Some of the greatest thrillers ever made were actually based on harrowing reality.

In The Heart Of The Sea (2015)

Crew members survive in open waters among threatening whales.

A whaling ship dubbed Essex was attacked by a large whale in 1820. The historical event partially inspired Herman Melville's Moby-Dick and Ron Howard's In the Heart of the Sea , an adventure film starring Chris Hemsworth and Benjamin Walker. After the ship is destroyed in the film, the surviving crew members sail to a small island with limited supplies.

From that point on, I n the Heart of the Sea continues as a survival film with the crew traveling in a desperate search for refuge . In the Heart of the Sea doesn't have the power such a story requires and performed poorly at the box office. Still, the visual elements in the film are striking and successfully portray the threat such an unpredictable enemy brings. Ultimately, In the Heart of the Sea does a decent job of telling a part of American history.

The Perfect Storm (2000)

Fishermen disappear amidst a severe hurricane.

Inspired by the events of the Andrea Gail fishing expedition, The Perfect Storm is an exaggerated telling of the disaster. The crew of the Andrea Gail sets sail into unexpected hazardous weather conditions that slowly tear apart the vessel bit by bit. In real life, the crew's final radio contact serves as the last known evidence of the expedition, as Andrea Gail and its crew members’ bodies have never been found.

With that in mind, the events in The Perfect Storm that occur after the crew's radio breaks beyond repair are speculative . Still, The Perfect Storm does a great job of depicting the distressing nature of being lost at sea during tumultuous weather. For its technical accomplishments, The Perfect Storm earned two Academy Award nominations for Best Sound and Best Visual Effects.

The Poseidon Adventure (1972)

Passengers attempt to escape a sinking liner.

Grouped with other disaster films in the '70s, including Airport , The Poseidon Adventure is a star-studded race to survival. Starring actors like Gene Hackman, Shelley Winters, and Jack Albertson, The Poseidon Adventure follows a group of passengers aboard a luxury liner, the SS Poseidon, which gets overturned by a tsunami. The Poseidon Adventure has a few flaws, but in the years following its release, it became a cult classic.

The film doesn't stray too far from the formulaic structure within the genre. Instead, what makes The Poseidon Adventure truly great is its skillfully crafted tension and impressive special effects . For its various feats, The Poseidon Adventure earned several Academy Award nominations and won in two categories: Best Original Song — "The Morning After" sung by Maureen McGovern —and Best Visual Effects.

Adrift (2018)

A couple is lost at sea during a hurricane.

Falling under both the romance and survival genres, Adrift follows the journey of Tami and Richard as they sail via yacht from Tahiti to San Diego, California, and is based on real events and Tami's book Red Sky in Mourning . During their travels, the couple gets caught up in Hurricane Raymond and changes their destination to Hawaii in hopes of getting out of the storm alive. Adrift has a non-linear structure, alternating between the early days of the couple’s relationship and their present-day disaster scenario.

Some critics felt this choice chipped away at the gravity of the couple's situation, while others felt seeing Tami and Richard's happier days allowed audiences to become more invested in their safe landing on shore . There are multiple instances in Adrift where the cinematography shows just how dire Tami and Richard's situation is, adding an eerie feeling to the film.

Open Water (2003)

Two scuba divers are stranded in shark infested waters.

Though horror movies often get things wrong about sharks , the sea creatures are established as the antagonists of quite a few films, including Open Water . Loosely based on the story of real-life couple Tom and Eileen Lonergan, Open Water follows Daniel and Susan, a couple who join a scuba diving group and unintentionally get left behind. It's scary to be stranded with no way to contact others but to make matters worse, Daniel and Susan are surrounded by sharks.

Like The Perfect Storm , the bodies of the film's real-life subjects have never been found. As a result, much of Open Water 's story is the doing of its writer and director, Chris Kentis. An avid scuba diver himself, Chris' low-budget film has a stronger element of realism than most survival thrillers and adds to the extreme fear felt by audiences.

Open Water True Story: The Real Shark Encounter That Inspired The Movie

Open Water tells the story of a couple in shark-infested waters - and it's loosely based on the real-life case of Tom and Eileen Lonergan.

Dead Calm (1989)

A woman is trapped on a yacht with a killer.

Many films that revolve around characters being lost at sea typically have something to do with severe weather or the threat of large sea creatures. However, in Dead Calm , John (Sam Neill) and Rae Ingram (Nicole Kidman) are a married couple that gets lost at sea after coming across a man, Hughie (Billy Zane), who claims he needs help with his sinking ship. It soon becomes clear that Hughie has malicious intentions when he takes the Ingrams' yacht and holds Rae captive.

Because the married couple is trying to reunite with one another and Rae is finding ways to outsmart Hughie and stay alive, Dead Calm plays out more like a typical thriller than a survival film . Yet, the terrifying feeling that comes with nature's unpredictability in other survival films is still present in Dead Calm . Moments where the vast ocean surrounding Rae is shown make it clear just how alone she is.

Cast Away (2000)

A man tries to survive on an island for years.

Earning Tom Hanks an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor, Cast Away tells an inspiring story of a FedEx employee who gets stranded on an island for years. Hanks' character Chuck Noland is aboard a FedEx cargo plane and is the sole survivor when it crashes into the Pacific Ocean. Chuck spends most of his time alone on the shore and Cast Away details the ways he survives, such as using items from FedEx packages and befriending a Wilson volleyball.

Most lost at sea films have an unfortunate ending where there are no survivors or those that do survive make it to safety in a short time frame. Cast Away differs as it illustrates a realistic outcome where Chuck doesn't make it home for years. Cast Away is one of the few survival films that isn't based on a singular event, but rather multiple instances in which people have been lost at sea and had to survive for an extended amount of time.

Lifeboat (1944)

Tensions rise among passengers stranded on a lifeboat.

Set in one location for the entirety of the film, Lifeboat is an underrated film by Alfred Hitchcock that sees its characters stranded on a lifeboat. After a ship carrying various British and American citizens was sunk by a German U-boat, they found themselves aboard a lifeboat, wishing to return to land. Like a few other entries on the list, the threatening presence in Lifeboat isn't that of a hurricane or sea animal, but rather a German man who the other characters feel should be thrown off for having sunk their ship.

Lifeboat 's setup creates a claustrophobic film, in the most effective way , and is largely character-driven as hostility forms and dynamics shift among the group. Because of Lifeboat 's singular setting, creative visual techniques are required to keep the film engaging, which Hitchcock has no issues with. Various framing and camera techniques depict the fluctuating relationship between the lifeboat’s passengers.

Life Of Pi (2012)

A young boy and a tiger are lost at sea.

Based on Yann Martel's novel of the same name, the feature film adaptation of Life of Pi earned Ang Lee his second Academy Award for Best Director. The film centers around the 227-day journey of the titular character and a Bengal tiger named Richard Parker after they're stranded at sea on a lifeboat. Throughout his venture to make it to shore, Pi (Suraj Sharma) encounters a few obstacles, including a bloodthirsty hyena and acidic pools of water.

Though Pi's journey and growing bond with Richard Parker is entertaining to watch, Life of Pi earned much of its critical acclaim for its visual elements and technical achievements . Utilizing 3D, Lee's already accomplished directing style was elevated in Life of Pi . Scenes including a variety of sea animals look stunning without 3D effects, but with the illusion, the animals appear to be magical, such as a swarm of flying fish coming in the lifeboat's direction and hundreds of jellyfish illumining the dark ocean water at night.

All Is Lost (2013)

One man is left out at sea.

One might imagine a film with one actor and minimal dialogue isn't worth seeing, but Robert Redford in All Is Lost proves otherwise. In All Is Lost , the beloved actor takes on the role of an unnamed man who must survive on his inflatable life raft after his boat is damaged in a collision with a shipping container. However, despite there being no dialogue, All Is Lost is not a quiet film — the action expected of such a survival story is present .

Redford's All Is Lost character is alone for the entirety of the film, which leaves room for a deep exploration of his endurance and problem-solving skills. All Is Lost is one of Redford's highest-rated films , and for good reason. Thanks largely to Redford's subtle, yet powerful performance as an actor, the film is suspenseful and succeeds in pulling audiences in as there is a large cloud of mystery surrounding the man.

British tech magnate Mike Lynch, 5 others missing after luxury superyacht sinks off Sicily

AP logo

ROME -- British tech magnate Mike Lynch and five other people were missing after their luxury superyacht sank during a freak storm off Sicily early Monday, Italy's civil protection and authorities said. Lynch's wife and 14 other people survived.

Lynch, who was acquitted in June in a big U.S. fraud trial, was among six people who remain unaccounted for after their chartered sailboat sank off Porticello, near Palermo, sometime after 4 a.m. A tornado over the water known as a waterspout had struck the area overnight, said Salvo Cocina of Sicily's civil protection agency.

One body was recovered, and police divers spent the day trying to reach the hull of the ship, which was resting at a depth of 50 meters (163 feet) off Porticello where it had been anchored, rescue authorities said. They returned to the site after 10 p.m. to see if it would be possible to search through the night, when weather conditions were expected to worsen, said Luca Cari, spokesman of the fire rescue service.

The ship had a crew of 10 people and 12 passengers, the Italian coast guard said. A sudden fierce storm had battered the area overnight, and a waterspout struck precisely where the 56-meter (184-foot) British-flagged Bayesian had been moored.

"They were in the wrong place at the wrong time," said Cocina, noting that another big ship nearby, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, wasn't as badly damaged and helped rescue the 15 survivors - including Lynch's wife, Angela Bacares.

The Bayesian was notable for its single 75-meter (246-feet) mast - one of the world's tallest made of aluminum and which was lit up at night, just hours before it sank. Online charter sites listed it for rent for up to 195,000 euros (about $215,000) a week.

One of the survivors, identified as Charlotte Golunski, said she momentarily lost hold of her 1-year-old daughter Sofia in the water, but then managed to hold her up over the waves until a lifeboat inflated and they were both pulled to safety, Italian news agency ANSA reported. The father, identified by ANSA as James Emslie, also survived, said Cocina.

Karsten Borner, the captain of the Sir Robert Baden Powell, said he had noticed the Bayesian nearby during the storm but after it calmed he saw a red flare and realized the ship had simply disappeared, ANSA and the Giornale di Sicilia newspaper reported. Borner said he and a crew member boarded their tender and found a lifeboat with 15 people, some of them injured, who they then took aboard and alerted the coast guard.

Eight of those rescued were hospitalized while the others were taken to a hotel. One body believed to be the cook was found near the wreck, but six others were unaccounted for and believed inside the hull, said Cari, the fire rescue spokesperson.

The rescue operations, which were visible from shore, involved helicopters and rescue boats from the coast guard, fire rescue and civil protection service.

Fisherman Fabio Cefal ù said he had seen a flare from shore at around 4:30 a.m. and immediately set out to the site but by the time he got there, the Bayesian had already sunk, with only cushions, wood and other items from the superyacht floating in the water.

"But for the rest, we didn't find anyone," he said from the port hours later. He said that he immediately alerted the coast guard and stayed on-site for three hours, but didn't find any survivors. "I think they are inside, all the missing people."

He said he had been up early to check the weather to see if he could go fishing, and surmised that a sudden waterspout had struck the yacht.

"It could be that the mast broke, or the anchor at the prow pulled it, I don't know," he said.

Cocina said the crew and passengers hailed from a variety of countries: In addition to Britain and the United States, passengers and crew were from Antigua, France, Germany, Ireland, Myanmar, the Netherlands, New Zealand and Spain, he said.

The UK Marine Accident Investigation Branch is deploying a team of four inspectors to Italy to conduct a preliminary assessment. The Foreign Commonwealth and Development office said it was "providing consular support to a number of British nationals and their families."

Dutch foreign ministry spokesperson Casper Soetekouw said the lone Dutch citizen on board, a man, had been rescued and was not in life-threatening condition.

Lynch, once hailed as Britain's king of technology, was cleared in June of fraud and conspiracy charges related to Hewlett Packard's $11 billion takeover of his company, Autonomy Corp.

The not guilty verdicts followed an 11-week criminal trial in San Francisco that delved into the history of HP's 2011 acquisition of Autonomy, a business software firm founded by Lynch.

The fraud accusations represented a dramatic turn in the fortunes of an entrepreneur once described as the Bill Gates of Britain - a title he seemed to live up to when he netted an $800 million from the Autonomy sale.

The acquittal vindicated Lynch, who had vehemently denied wrong doing and portrayed HP as a technological train wreck.

"I'm looking forward to returning the UK and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field," Lynch said in a statement released after the verdict.

The yacht, built in 2008 by the Italian firm Perini Navi, can accommodate 12 passengers in four double cabins, a triple and the master suite, plus crew accommodations, according to Charter World and Yacht Charters.

The vessel, which previously was named Salute when it flew under a Dutch flag, featured a sleek, minimalist interior of light wood with Japanese accents designed by the French designer Remi Tessier, according to descriptions and photos on the charter sites.

At Least 1 Dead and 6 Missing After Yacht Sinks Off Sicily

Fifteen other people were rescued. Expert divers were called in to carry out search operations in the deep water. Among the missing was a British software mogul, Mike Lynch.

Several boats including coast guard vessels near each other at sea.

By Elisabetta Povoledo

At least one person was killed and six others, including a British software mogul, were missing on Monday after a sailing yacht carrying 22 people sank during a violent storm off the coast of Sicily, Italian officials said.

The yacht sank after a storm “with strong winds” struck around 5 a.m., according to Luciano Pischedda, the Italian Coast Guard official overseeing the rescue operations. The vessel had been anchored about a half-mile off Porticello, about 12 miles east of the Sicilian capital, Palermo.

Camper & Nicholsons, managers of the sailing yacht, said in an emailed statement that there were 12 guests and 10 crew onboard.

The authorities have yet to determine what caused the yacht to sink. “This will be ascertained later,” Mr. Pischedda said, adding that several crew members were in the hospital and had not spoken to investigators.

Among the dead and missing, four were British, two were American, and one was a man with dual citizenship from Canada and Antigua, he said.

One of those unaccounted for is Mike Lynch, a British software mogul who was acquitted in the United States in June of fraud, according to a person with knowledge of the matter who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about it.

His wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued. Mr. Lynch, who once was described as Britain’s Bill Gates, had fought for more than a decade against accusations that he had defrauded Hewlett-Packard when he sold it his company, Autonomy, for $11 billion. The legal battle represented one of the biggest fraud cases in Silicon Valley history.

Salvatore Cocina, a top official with Sicily’s civil protection agency, said that Mr. Lynch’s daughter, Hannah Lynch, was also among the six people missing. All were passengers on the yacht, the Coast Guard said.

Mr. Cocina said the body that had been recovered was that of the yacht’s cook.

A passenger ship sailing under the flag of the Netherlands, the Sir Robert Baden Powell, anchored nearby, provided immediate assistance to the 15 surviving passengers, Mr. Pischedda said.

Karsten Börner, the captain of the Sir Robert, said in a telephone interview that he’d had to steady his ship to “keep it in position” during what he described as very strong winds. During the storm, the yacht seemed to disappear, he said. “At a certain moment she was gone behind us,” he said.

After the wind dropped down, “we couldn’t see the yacht any more, and then we saw a red flare,” he added. When he and a colleague went to check out the flare’s position, they spotted a “life raft adrift with 15 people on board, one of them a baby and four people injured,” he said. They were taken aboard the Sir Robert and Captain Börner contacted the Coast Guard, which brought the survivors to shore.

Captain Börner said he didn’t know when the ship went down because the storm made it difficult to see clearly. The wind was “really violent,” he said.

For the most part, the survivors didn’t speak much he said. “They were all under shock,” he said. “It was a bad, bad situation.”

Monday’s storm surprised experts with its intensity.

Col. Attilio Di Diodato, director of the Italian Air Force’s Center for Aerospace Meteorology and Climatology, said the agency had registered intense lighting activity and strong gusts of wind in the area at the time of the accident.

“It was very intense and brief in duration,” he said of the storm. He could not rule out that it had been a waterspout, or small tornado, but nevertheless called it “an important event.”

Italy’s firefighter corps said that its divers had started carrying out a search and rescue mission at dawn.

On Monday afternoon, expert divers with the firefighter corps arrived in Porticello to search the sunken vessel, which was under about 165 feet of water.

Operations at that depth, were “complicated,” and required specialized divers, said Luca Cari, a spokesman for the firefighters.

Fabio Cefalù, a fisherman in Porticello, told the Italian newspaper La Repubblica that he saw a waterspout — a sort of mini-tornado — that lasted “about 12 minutes” off the shore of Porticello shortly before 4 a.m.

Around 4:10, he said he saw a red flare go off “about 500 meters from the shore.” He said he waited for the weather to calm down, and went out about 20 minutes later to the site where the flare had gone off.

“We found only the cushions, and a few planks” floating in the water, he told the newspaper. There was no sign of the ship, and he immediately called the coast guard.

The boat, identified by Italian officials as the Bayesian, is an Italian-made 56-meter-long sailing yacht first launched in 2008, according to the website marinetraffic.com , which tracks ships. It sails under the flag of Britain, and was built by Perini Navi, an Italian luxury yacht maker.

Eight of the 15 passengers who were rescued were taken to hospitals in Palermo, the coast guard said. Camper & Nicholsons, the managers of the yacht, said its priority was to “provide all necessary support to the rescued passengers and crew.”

Giuseppe D’Agostino, the mayor of Santa Flavia, which includes Porticello, said the survivors would be cared for at a local hotel. The city had also brought them immediate necessities, like toiletries and clothes.

He said in a telephone interview that he had not spoken to the survivors since “they’re in shock.”

The youngest passenger onboard, a 1-year-old girl named Sophie, was taken to the Di Cristina hospital in Palermo with her mother, Charlotte, who had some scrapes and cuts, said Domenico Cipolla, director of the pediatric emergency room at the hospital.

Sophie’s father was in the hospital’s adult emergency room and had been in contact with his wife and daughter by phone, Dr. Cipolla said. He was not permitted to release the family’s surname. Both mother and child were in good condition apart from “great emotional stress” he added in a telephone interview.

“We’re comforting them more than curing them,” he said.
