Passengers could still be alive in air pockets inside the sunken superyacht. But it's a long shot and time is running out.

  • Divers are searching for missing people from the sunken superyacht Bayesian near Porticello, Italy.
  • An expert told Business Insider they're likely looking for air pockets in the vessel.
  • But it's unlikely survivors will be found, the Italian coast guard said.

Insider Today

Divers are searching the sunken superyacht Bayesian for air pockets where survivors might be trapped, but experts and officials say the mission is hampered by dangers and limited time.

The search and rescue operation for the six people missing from the Bayesian is continuing, after it sank in a sudden storm while anchored off the Italian port of Porticello early Monday.

Among the missing is British tech billionaire Mike Lynch . One person has been found dead and 15 were rescued from the vessel.

Matthew Schanck, chairman of the UK's Maritime Search and Rescue Council, told Business Insider that with around 36 hours having passed since the sinking, it appeared likely the missing are still on the vessel.

He added that relatively calm conditions in the hours after the storm passed and weak sea currents meant they'd likely have been found by now if they were on the sea's surface.

Schanck said search and rescue team divers will search the vessel "to see if they can see any casualties through windows or anything like that. They'll assess the structure of the vessel. Are there any air pockets, you know? Is there any noise or any signs of life, and that will factor into their decision-making."

Nick Sloane, who worked on the Costa Concordia salvage operation, told Sky News rescue time is running out to find survivors.

"They've got a very small window of time to try to find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket, and they could be rescued," he said.

"If the yacht is on its side, it might have more air pockets than if it's upright. She's got quite a large keel, and that will deflect and put her on her side, I'm sure," he added.

Schanck added that search and rescue leaders would weigh the risk versus the potential for finding survivors in deciding whether to send teams on highly dangerous dives into the sunken vessel.

Related stories

"If you heard banging from inside you'd be able to take more risks to save a life. But if all the information is pointing towards the fact actually there's no evidence of air pockets, you've scoured the surface, and we think the casualties are in there, then it'd be very difficult for them justify divers entering the vessel to go and recover casualties," he said.

Vincenzo Zagarola, a spokesman for the Italian Coast Guard, told the PA news agency that the missing would unlikely be found alive.

"Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly," he said.

"We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat."

When asked if there was any hope of finding the missing alive, he reportedly said, "Never say never, but reasonably, the answer should be no."

Schanck said there's no strict timeline for assessing when a search and rescue operation should be called off; it's a call made by team leaders based on the evidence available.

Lynch was among the UK's best-known tech entrepreneurs. In 2011, he sold his company Autonomy to Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion.

However, the deal led to a drawn-out legal battle, which resulted in Lynch's acquittal on fraud charges in the US in June.

His daughter, Hannah Lynch, is among the missing, while his wife, Angela Bacares, is among the survivors.

AirYacht reveals radical 52m airship-yacht crossover concept

Flying yachts, once the stuff of our wildest, most outlandish dreams, are slowly inching closer to a reality. As the industry prepares for the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival , BOAT catches up with  Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht, and Franck Darnet, the yacht's designer, to learn more about an exciting concept that's set to take to the skies in 2026...

Swiss company AirYacht has unveiled a radical new concept that marries the flying power of an airship with the luxury amenities of a superyacht.

Capable of flying between 100 to 3,000 metres above the ground with an autonomous cruising time of around one week, the AirYacht's groundbreaking design is composed of two separate modules: a 200-metre helium-filled airship attached to an ultra-lightweight all-carbon 52-metre superyacht residence.

The three-storey residence can be landed in its entirety or it can deploy a 12-person elevator to allow guests to disembark for a quick stopover.

Each module has its own complement of crew - the airship will have a crew of three and the residence will have a crew of 12.

The AirYacht is the brainchild of Guillaume Hoddé and Matthieu Ozanne, who founded the company in 2017 and enlisted the design expertise of Franck Darnet , who most recently worked on the exteriors of 63.8 metre Atomic . Born in Nantes and immersed in the world of Vendée Globe racing boats, Darnet has a masterful knowledge of "weight performance" technology that makes him uniquely suited to the challenges of airborne yachts.

The residence will have the same layout as a superyacht, with three decks, 750 square metres of indoor space and amenities including a gym, sauna, swimming pool and touch and go helipad.

Accommodation is provided for between ten and 12 guests in a five or six-cabin layout. Terraces, which can be used while the AirYacht is both underway and stationary, flank the starboard and port sides and there is an additional 120 square metre terrace-style lounge on the aft.

Aerodynamic shape and low weight are crucial to the design of the AirYacht. In order to keep the vessel as lightweight as possible, the residence component won’t be fitted with engines.

This creates additional space and increased flexibility to tailor the interior layout, while also allowing the residence to be built at AirYachts’ own facility without the need for a shoreside shipyard. When the residence is detached and on water, it will be towed by its tenders.

The AirYacht aims to give passengers the freedom to roam anywhere in the world, from lakes and seas to deserts and mountains. “On a normal superyacht you have to stay at sea. You can’t cross a hill or a mountain,” said Franck Darnet. “Most of the beautiful things that you see on our planet - some of them are next to the shore [...] but a lot of them are inland.”

In order to conceptualise the residence, Darnet had to rethink various different aspects of design. To this end, the crew quarters are in the forward upper part of the residence - in the section that ‘plugs’ into the airship - in order to give the crew to access the airship module.

The AirYacht also features large sections of glazing in the hull that allows passengers to look down, “because the most spectacular things that exist when you are flying are on the floor,” said Darnet.

While the AirYacht will be able to fly at dizzying heights of around 3,000 metres, the vessel is designed to cruise at heights of between 100 and 200 metres to allow for crystal-clear views of the world unfolding below.

The AirYacht will require ‘early adopters’ for it to take off - both literally and figuratively. “This isn’t a new ship, or a new yacht or new plane. This is a completely new thing,” said Guillaume Hoddé, co-founder of AirYacht. ‘New concept, new design. It’s like a dream.”

Currently, the AirYacht is powered by hybrid technology. “In ten years, we hope to have a full hydrogen version,” added Hoddé.

The first AirYacht will be able to achieve top speeds of 50 knots and the first unit is due for completion in 2026.

Guillaume Hoddé will be attending the 2022 Superyacht Design Festival to shed more light on the AirYacht and discuss the future of flying-focused yacht designs. The event will be held in Milan from 22-24 June. Tickets are still available to purchase .

Five bodies found by divers searching sunken Bayesian superyacht

Divers have continued to search for survivors off the coast of Sicily amid hopes some survivors might be trapped in air pockets inside the ship.

Five bodies have been found by divers searching the wreck of the superyacht that sunk off the coast of Sicily.

Four bodies have been brought ashore and efforts to recover the fifth will continue on Thursday.

The body of the yacht's chef, Recaldo Thomas, had been recovered already, the Italian coastguard confirmed to Sky News on Tuesday. The discoveries bring the total number of confirmed dead to six.

Authorities are yet to confirm the identity of the bodies found on Wednesday. One person remains missing.

Superyacht search - latest updates

British tech billionaire Mike Lynch and his 18-year-old daughter were among those missing after the Bayesian went down as a result of being hit by a tornado on Monday morning.

Six were missing in total - with Morgan Stanley International chairman Jonathan Bloomer and US lawyer Chris Morvillo also unaccounted for, along with their wives, Judy Bloomer and Neda Morvillo.

Twenty-two people were on board the vessel, 15 of whom were rescued - including Briton Charlotte Golunski and her one-year-old daughter Sofia.

Search and rescue operations are ongoing to find survivors of the accident

Giovanni Costantino, the CEO of The Italian Sea Group, which owns the firm which built the yacht, said he had been left in "disbelief" at the news of the Bayesian sinking while anchored off the coast of Sicily.

"Being the manufacturer of Perini and knowing very well how the boats have always been designed and built," he said, "and as Perini is a sailing ship... sailing ships are renowned to be the safest ever."

He added their structure and keel made them "unsinkable".

Divers involved in the search and rescue operation for the sunken Costa Concordia in 2013 have been called in to stretch the amount of time underwater to 20 minutes per dive. For the past two days, a major challenge for divers had been their limit of 12 minutes on each dive, including the time to go down and come back up.

But the Costa Concordia divers have cylinders containing particular micelles which allow for a longer dive.

Divers have been looking for survivors in the hope that some might be trapped in air pockets inside the ship, but experts believe the chances any are left alive are slim.

Divers from the local fire service have been entering the water with torches attached to their headgear at the site of the shipwreck on Wednesday afternoon.

A police boat was also at the scene, while a helicopter hovered overhead.

Dr Jamie Pringle, a reader in forensic geoscience at Keele University, told Sky News there have been cases where people have survived for about 60 hours in similar depths of water.

But he says they are "very rare" and the longer time goes on, the less likely it is they will be found alive.

Simon Boxall, a senior lecturer in oceanography at the University Of Southampton, said it is "fairly certain" they are still on board.

He said it is also possible they were thrown from the boat and into the sea, so a search of the surrounding waters will continue.

Sky News correspondent Ashna Hurynag reported that eight divers from across Italy had been working to find survivors.

In total, there are between 20 and 50 emergency personnel involved in the operation.

The Bayesian, a 56-metre (184ft) British-flagged yacht, went down in a storm early on Monday as it was moored a short distance offshore.

CCTV footage has shown the moment a storm off the coast of Sicily engulfed the Bayesian luxury yacht carrying 22 people.

The superyacht was moored around half-a-mile off the coast of Porticello when it sank at around 5am local time on Monday as the area was hit by a storm.

The tall mast of the craft can be seen in the black-and-white footage, as rain appears to be lashing down in the foreground.

Italian officials have said they fear British technology tycoon Mike Lynch and five others may have been trapped inside the boat. An expert has suggested they could be relying on air pockets to survive.

Vincenzo Zagarola of the Italian Coastguard said this was the working theory of officials on Sicily because it is believed the boat sank quickly and search and rescue efforts by sea and air have so far delivered no results.

He said: “We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea.

“Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours.

“Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly. We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.”

Asked about the likelihood of them being alive, he replied: “Never say never, but reasonably the answer should be not.”

The CCTV footage taken from a villa only 200-metres away shows the £14million yacht slowly disappearing off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, as it is engulfed by a tornado of heavy rain. Lights from the yacht can also be seen in the distance.

One witness described how he went to check his cameras after hearing the news regarding the sunken yacht, according to Italian newspaper Giornale Di Sicilia .

The owner of the villa said: “In just sixty seconds, you can see the ship disappear. Of about twenty cameras installed in the house, only one was not disturbed by the wind and rain. You can clearly see what is happening. There was nothing that could be done for the boat. It disappeared in a very short time.”

Italy ’s fire brigade Vigili del Fuoco said it is developing a plan to enter the wreckage of Bayesian, which is resting on the seabed off the coast at a depth of 50 metres.

It described the operation as “complex”, with divers limited to 12-minute underwater shifts.

The missing tourists are: Mr Lynch; his daughter, Hannah Lynch; Morgan Stanley International bank chairman Jonathan Bloomer; his wife, Judy Bloomer; Clifford Chance lawyer Chris Morvillo; and his wife, Neda Morvillo.

Fifteen of the 22 passengers and crew onboard – including Mr Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares – were rescued after escaping onto a lifeboat.

On Tuesday, an inflated orange lifeboat was docked at the harbour near where search crews are being dispatched.

One body, belonging to the ship’s chef Recaldo Thomas, was recovered at the scene of the sinking on Monday.

Mr Lynch, who founded software giant Autonomy in 1996, was cleared in June of conducting a massive fraud relating to an 11 billion US dollar (£8.64 billion) sale to US company Hewlett Packard.

The boat trip was a celebration of his acquittal.

Authorities, experts say passengers on sunken yacht Bayesian could still be alive in air pockets

B ritish tech tycoon Mike Lynch and the five others still missing from the sunken Bayesian yacht could  be alive because of “air pockets” inside the hull, an expert claims.

Italian authorities have said that the chances of the passengers surviving the disaster was very small, but “never say never.”

Nick Sloane, an engineer who worked on the Costa Concordia salvage operation a decade ago, told Sky News that search teams had “a very small window of time to try to find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket.”

“You’ve got a maximum of two to three days to try to get someone out, so the next 24 hours are critical,” he said.

“If the yacht is on its side, it might have more air pockets than if it’s upright. She’s got quite a large keel, and that will deflect and put her on her side, I’m sure.”

Horror CCTV footage shows the moment a terrifying storm in Italy engulfed a superyacht carrying 22 people as a desperate search continues for those missing, who could be relying on air pockets to survive.

The 56-metre luxury yacht, named the Bayesian , capsized and sank on Monday at around 5am after a horrific storm hit the area - with expert divers continuing their desperate search for those onboard. Authorities confirmed yesterday that one man had tragically died following the incident, while six others remain missing.

The vessel, located off the coast of Palermo, Sicily, is believed to be owned by the family of British tycoon Mike Lynch , who is among those yet to be found, along with his 18-year-old daughter Hannah . Fifteen people, including a one-year-old baby, were saved by nearby ship Sir Robert Baden Powell, which was anchored close by.

A new CCTV clip taken from a villa only 200m away from the accident has emerged, and shows the £14million vessel slowly disappearing off the coast of Porticello, Sicily, as it is engulfed by the heavy rain. Lights from the yacht can also be seen in the distance before tragedy strikes.

One witness told how he went to check his cameras after hearing the news of the sinking, according to Giornale Di Sicilia. The owner of the villa said: "In just sixty seconds, you can see the ship disappear. Of about twenty cameras installed in the house, only one was not disturbed by the wind and rain. You can clearly see what is happening. There was nothing that could be done for the boat. It disappeared in a very short time."

Specialist drivers are now frantically fighting their way through blockages in the 50m deep wreck in an effort to find the missing six people. Vincenzo Zagarola, a spokesman for the coast guard, said they believe they may still be inside the yacht, as it sank in just a few minutes.

He said: “We think they are still inside the boat, that is our very hard idea. Our search and rescue activity by sea and air has gone on for around 36 hours. Of course, we do not exclude that they are not inside the boat, but we know the boat sank quickly. We suppose that the six people missing may not have had time to get out of the boat.”

It comes as an expert has claimed passengers could still be alive due to air pockets inside the sunken yacht. Nick Sloane, an engineer who worked on the Costa Concordia salvage operation, warned that rescuers are entering a "critical" 24-hour period to rescue anyone who may have survived.

"They've got a very small window of time to try and find people stuck inside with hopefully an air pocket, and they could be rescued," he explained. "You've got a maximum of two to three days to try to get someone out, so the next 24 hours are critical."

Speaking to Sky News, he said: "If the yacht is on its side, i might have more air pockets than if it's upright. She's got quite a large keel, and that will deflect and put her on her side, I'm sure."

“The way we design, is we design fully custom, fully unique yachts, we start with a blank piece of paper and we start asking the client how they use the boat, what they want to do on board, what kind of experience they have but we also want input on what kind of styling they like... It’s about getting to learn about the owner and how they want to use the boat.” - Ronno Schouten, Design Manager of De Voogt Naval Architects

Valletta Chartering a yacht in Malta

The Grand Harbour at Valletta is the mooring of choice since it is deep enough for luxury yachts and accommodates tankers of all shapes and sizes. The neighbouring port of Sliema is equally suitable for mooring but the historical and cultural charm of Valletta itself is immediately apparent before landing.

More Details

The Italian pink ornate limestone buildings dominate the inner harbour in contrast to the fortress granite of the outer harbour. Valletta's bastions have obviously had their uses down the ages and we should not be surprised to find that it is common practice at 12 noon for the battery of cannons to discharge a welcoming salute each day. The historical side of some of the port's quaint tradition harps back to the arrival in 1565 of the "Knights Hospitallers of the Order of Saint John." They ended up in Malta after being chased around the Mediterranean by the Turks. By defending the city during the so-called "Great Siege" and for seeing off a vastly superior Turkish armada, they were rewarded by the Emperor Charles V, with life tenure of the Maltese islands. The deal was that the Emperor required in return, various religious devotions and a yearly rent of one falcon . He also funded the islands as "a last castle of Christianity"and allowed Jean de la Valletta, the Grandmaster, to build much of the fortress we see today. During World War II the "Luftwaffe" tried to bomb Malta into submission, but anti-aircraft guns and the Royal Navy's "Force K" based in the Grand Harbour together with the RAF helped to defend the island. This island base was a major source of harassment to German and Italian forces in North Africa, although at the height of the bombing in 1942 the docks were very heavily damaged. There were also many civilians injured but few serious casualties. In token of their stalwart defence the people of Malta were awarded "The George Cross" and it is this history that makes Malta such a tourist attraction. For the yachting enthusiast who goes ashore at Valletta the two "must-see" places are the UNESCO designated "Hypogeum Ruins" dating back to 3600 BC (tickets from the National Museum in Valletta) and also the magnificent Renaissance Cathedral of Saint John which is home to two Caravaggio masterpieces "The Beheading of St. John the Baptist" and the full length oil painting of "St. Jerome." Elsewhere in Valletta one can explore the "Casa Rocca Piccola" where paintings, photographs and antique furniture recalls 400 years of Maltese nobility. In addition the Republic Square open air restaurants surrounding the imposing statue of Queen Victoria have nearby the 18th Century Bibliotheca's reading room which provides the historian with an entire history of the Knight's of St. John and Charles V's Donation deal. In Old Theatre Street the naval bars and theatres are a source of nightlife entertainment and are crowded with tourists in the Carnival season. In Valletta the lively carnival starts next year on 12th February 2010 and can be expected to continue as part of the "run-in" to the Christian season of Lent. In fact, both in Valletta, Floriana and in Gozo it is a colourful carnival to enjoy oneself before the Lenten fast. The events are free of charge and end with a grand firework display.

The Valletta Waterfront is also the gateway to Malta’s capital city, Valletta – a city built by gentlemen for gentlemen. In fact, as one of the most successful Mediterranean ports, the Port of Valletta welcomes more than half-a-million cruise passengers into this open air museum.

All this comes with an added bonus – the majestic setting within the Grand Harbour, a natural deep water port, for many thousand of years the epicentre of Malta’s maritime activity, a truly exceptional and outstanding backdrop.

Marine Corps veteran Paul Whelan freed in US-Russia prisoner swap

yacht air valletta

The United States and Russia completed their biggest prisoner swap in post-Soviet history on Thursday, with Moscow releasing American journalist Evan Gershkovich and Marine Corps veteran Paul Whelan , along with dissidents including Vladimir Kara-Murza , in a multinational deal that set two dozen people free, officials said.

The trade followed years of secretive back-channel negotiations despite relations between Washington and Moscow being at their lowest point since the Cold War after Russian President Vladimir Putin’s February 2022 invasion of Ukraine .

Marine veteran Paul Whelan sentenced to 16 years in Russia on spying charges

Marine veteran paul whelan has insisted on his innocence, saying he was set up..

The sprawling deal, the latest in a series of prisoner swaps negotiated between Russia and the U.S. in the last two years but the first to require significant concessions from other countries, was heralded by President Joe Biden as a diplomatic achievement in the final months of his administration. But the release of Americans has come at a price: Russia has secured the freedom of its own nationals convicted of serious crimes in the West by trading them for journalists, dissidents and other Westerners convicted and sentenced in a highly politicized legal system on charges the U.S. considers bogus.

Under the deal, Russia released Gershkovich, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal who was jailed in 2023 and convicted in July of espionage charges that he and the U.S. vehemently denied and called baseless; Whelan, a Michigan corporate security executive and Marine veteran jailed since 2018 also on espionage charges he and Washington have denied; and Radio Free Europe/Radio Liberty journalist Alsu Kurmasheva , a dual U.S.-Russian citizen convicted in July of spreading false information about the Russian military, accusations her family and employer have rejected.

The dissidents released included Kara-Murza, a Kremlin critic and Pulitzer Prize-winning writer serving 25 years on charges of treason widely seen as politically motivated; 11 political prisoners being held in Russia, including associates of the late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny ; and a German national arrested in Belarus.

The Russian side got Vadim Krasikov , who was convicted in Germany in 2021 of killing a former Chechen rebel in a Berlin park two years earlier, apparently on the orders of Moscow’s security services.

Russia also received two alleged sleeper agents who were jailed in Slovenia, as well as three men charged by federal authorities in the U.S., including Roman Seleznev, a convicted computer hacker and the son of a Russian lawmaker , and Vadim Konoshchenok, a suspected Russian intelligence operative accused of providing American-made electronics and ammunition to the Russian military. Norway returned an academic arrested on suspicions of being a Russian spy , and Poland also sent back a man it detained.

US soldier convicted of theft in Russia sentenced to nearly 4 years

Thursday’s swap of 24 prisoners surpassed a deal involving 14 people that was struck in 2010. In that exchange, Washington freed 10 Russians living in the U.S. as sleepers, while Moscow deported four Russians living in their homeland, including Sergei Skripal , a double agent working with British intelligence. He and his daughter in 2018 were nearly killed by nerve agent poisoning blamed on Russian agents.

Speculation had mounted for weeks that a swap was near because of a confluence of unusual developments, including a startingly quick trial and conviction for Gershkovich that Washington regarded as a sham. He was sentenced to 16 years in a maximum-security prison.

In a trial that concluded in two days in secrecy in the same week as Gershkovich’s, Kurmasheva was convicted on charges of spreading false information about the Russian military that her family, employer and U.S. officials rejected.

Also in recent days, several other figures imprisoned in Russia for speaking out against the war in Ukraine or over their work with Navalny were moved from prison to unknown locations.

Russia releases US Marine vet as part of prisoner exchange

The marine veteran jailed in moscow was traded for a convicted russian drug trafficker serving a long prison sentence in america..

Gershkovich was arrested March 29, 2023, while on a reporting trip to the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg. Authorities claimed, without offering any evidence, that he was gathering secret information for the U.S. The son of Soviet emigres who settled in New Jersey, he moved to the country in 2017 to work for The Moscow Times newspaper before being hired by the Journal in 2022.

He had more than a dozen closed hearings over the extension of his pretrial detention or appeals for his release. He was taken to the courthouse in handcuffs and appeared in the defendants’ cage, often smiling for the many cameras.

U.S. officials last year made an offer to swap Gershkovich that was rejected by Russia, and Biden’s Democratic administration had not made public any possible deals since then.

Gershkovich was designated as wrongfully detained, as was Whelan, who was detained in December 2018 after traveling to Russia for a wedding. Whelan was convicted of espionage charges, which he and the U.S. have also said were false and trumped up, and he was serving a 16-year prison sentence.

Whelan had been excluded from prior high-profile deals involving Russia, including the April 2022 swap by Moscow of imprisoned Marine veteran Trevor Reed for Konstantin Yaroshenko, a Russian pilot convicted in a drug trafficking conspiracy. That December, the U.S. released notorious arms trafficker Viktor Bout in exchange for getting back WNBA star Brittney Griner, who’d been jailed on drug charges.

MAG-16's Impressive Display of Air Power: A Modern-Day Elephant Walk

A s the marine layer burned off over Southern California on the morning of June 6, 2019, Marine Corps Air Station Miramar became the scene for an impressive demonstration of military capability. A large-scale training exercise was conducted by Marine Aircraft Group 16 (MAG-16) with the 3d Marine Aircraft Wing, launching 26 MV-22B Ospreys and 14 CH-53E Super Stallions in a show of combat readiness and capability.

According to Colonel Craig C. LeFlore, the commanding officer of MAG-16, “MAG-16 has executed our maximum flight event to demonstrate the combat readiness of our MAG and to tell the MAG-16 story.” He further went on to add that the unit was ready at all times to respond to any crisis all around the world in an instant, and this type of training exercise helped to keep them ready.

Known as an “elephant walk,” the aircraft taxied en masse before taking off in quick succession. The practice is one started during World War II, meant to demonstrate American airmen’s might. Traditionally, this has been completed with bomber and fighter aircraft, but the particular elephant walk included the tiltrotor MV-22 Osprey and the heavy-lift CH-53E Super Stallion.

“Seeing 20-odd MV-22s lined up on the runway together was a head-turner,” one observer said. The Osprey, which first entered into service in 1999, joins the vertical flight capabilities of helicopters with the speed, range, and endurance of fixed-wing transports. Having the ability to carry upwards of more than 20 Marines over 400 nautical miles at a cruise speed of 266 knots, the Osprey has been one of the cornerstones of the Marine Air-Ground Task Force for well over two decades.

Also integral to the exercise was the CH-53E Super Stallion, the only heavy lift helicopter in the Department of Defense’s rotorcraft inventory. The 37,500-pound Super Stallion can haul more than 30 Marines or over 32,000 pounds of cargo more than 110 nautical miles. Its heavy-lift capabilities make it invaluable for a wide range of assault support operations, from combat assault support to air evacuation.

LeFlore brought to the forefront that the exercise wasn’t simply for appearance. The majority of these aircraft will go out and conduct tactical training after their launch,” he said. This keeps Marines the most prepared when the nation is least ready, a sentiment reflected in the kinetic energy and focused drive of the Marines and Sailors executing this event.

The MV-22B Osprey, the CH-53E Super Stallion, and MAG-16 capabilities have combined to provide the opportunity for humanitarian assistance, disaster response, typhoons, earthquakes, and California fire suppression worldwide. These operations are important in terms of readiness and commitment by Marines and Sailors of MAG-16.

The mass sortie on June 6, 2019, also offered a fitting tribute to the 75th Anniversary of D-Day, serving as a reminder of the achievements of those who’ve gone before us.

Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary Denis McDonough will continue in his role until President Joe Biden exits office in January, a VA official confirmed Thursday.

Until that time, McDonough is “fighting like hell” to help veterans get their earned benefits and health care, said VA Press Secretary Terrence Hayes. A Bloomberg report Tuesday suggested the VA secretary would step down after the election, which is Nov. 5.

However, McDonough has no plans to leave his post early, Hayes confirmed.

It’s customary for presidents to ask all political appointees, including Cabinet members, to submit resignations at the end of their terms to “clear the decks for the new administration,” according to the Partnership for Public Service .

Cabinet members also submit resignations as a courtesy when presidents are reelected to allow second-term presidents the opportunity to make leadership changes and bring “fresh ideas,” the organization said.

McDonough’s plans after Biden leaves office Jan. 20 are unclear. It’s unlikely that former President Donald Trump, the Republican presidential nominee, would seek to reappoint him, and Vice President Kamala Harris, the presumptive Democratic nominee, has yet to share any potential plans for Cabinet posts.

Biden appointed McDonough, a former White House chief of staff for President Barack Obama, at the start of his term in 2021. McDonough came into the role as only the the second non-veteran ever to hold the post. At the time, Biden’s transition team described him as a “crisis-tested public servant” with “the empathy, the character, the integrity and ethics, and the relentless work ethic the position demands.”

McDonough is the VA’s 11th secretary and the longest-serving since retired Army Gen. Eric Shinseki held the role from January 2009 to May 2014. Three secretaries served between the two, each holding the post fewer than three years.

In a statement Thursday, the VA lauded McDonough’s work at the department. Among the list of achievements shared by the agency was his efforts to implement the PACT Act, sweeping legislation that expanded health care and benefits for veterans exposed to toxins, including chemical defoliants and burn pit smoke .

The VA said in May it had reached the milestone of approving one million claims made under the PACT Act. On July 19, the agency reported it had approved 1.1 million claims, with an approval rate of 75%.

“The PACT Act was supposed to phase in health care and benefits over several years, but VA decided to bring forward health care and benefits eligibility, thus allowing millions of veterans to get the benefits they deserve years earlier than they would have otherwise,” the VA said in a statement Thursday.

Among the other cited accomplishments was a policy McDonough implemented in 2023 to allow veterans to access emergency mental health care free of charge at any VA hospital or clinic, regardless of whether they were enrolled in VA health care. According to the department, 49,714 veterans used that benefit in its first year.

McDonough has faced some controversy during his time as secretary. Most recently, McDonough acknowledged in June “a series of massive mistakes” in the improper awarding of about $11 million in incentive bonuses to senior department officials last year.

Republican lawmakers questioned whether some senior leaders should be fired because of the scandal, which they said has undermined public faith in the department.

Marine killed by a Humvee rollover during combat training accident is identified

A sign sits at the entrance to the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center in Twentynine Palms.

  • Copy Link URL Copied!

A training exercise at the U.S. Marine base in Twentynine Palms turned deadly after a Humvee rolled over, killing a Marine, authorities said.

The Marine, identified as Staff Sgt. Jerry L. Betzold, 26, was rushed to the nearby Robert E. Bush Naval hospital after the accident Saturday, then evacuated to the Desert Regional Medical Center in Palm Springs, where he died a day later, according to a statement by the Marine Corps Air Ground Combat Center on Facebook . No other Marines were injured in the incident.

For the record:

1:49 p.m. July 31, 2024 An earlier version of this article and its headline stated that a Marine was crushed to death by a Humvee. The cause of death has yet to be disclosed.

“We extend our deepest condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the Marine during this difficult time,” the Marines said.

Betzold, from Avon, Ind., was assigned to the Tactical Training Exercise Control Group, which manages service level training exercises. The incident happened during a routine training exercise meant to simulate a battle with live fire, according the Marine Corps.

It is unclear whether a vehicle malfunction or some other factor caused the lethal mishap; the cause of death is still under investigation. Humvees can weigh anywhere from 5 to 7 tons, the equivalent of a large adult elephant.

“Staff Sergeant Jerry Betzold represents all that is good and pure in our nation and Corps,” Col. David Hart, director of the Tactical Training Exercise Control Group, said in a statement. “He tragically lost his life while working to ensure our combat formations remain ready when the nation needs them.”

Betzold received several awards during his tenure, including the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal and the Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation.

Dozens of friends and fellow service members turned to Facebook to share their condolences and memories of Betzold.

“Waking up to an early morning text saying that we lost you brother hurt like no other,” one post read . “Your motivation and love to the Marines will always resonate.”

Deputies responded to a hit-and-run on a pedestrian May 28 at 2 a.m. at the intersection of Virginia Avenue and Artesia Boulevard in Bellflower. Peter Chounthala, 42, was found lying in the street with injuries to his upper chest and was pronounced dead at the scene.

A Marine was beaten, then run over in Bellflower. A $20,000 reward is offered for information

Two men beat Peter Chounthala, leaving him in the street before he was hit by a car, sheriff’s deputies say.

July 24, 2024

Vehicle rollovers are one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. military. CNN reported in 2019 that more American service members die each year from training accidents than from combat. The Government Accountability Office studied tactical vehicle accidents over a nine-year period from 2010 and 2019, finding that “driver inattention, supervision lapses, and training shortfalls were common causes” of fatal rollovers.

Earlier this year, five Marines based at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar died in a helicopter crash as they flew back from a routine training mission in Indian Springs, Nev.
