Review of Caliber 38

Basic specs..

The Caliber 38 is equipped with a fin keel. A boat with a fin keel is more manoeuvrable but has less directional stability than a similar boat with a long keel.

The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load. See immersion rate below.

The boat is typically equipped with an inboard Yanmar 4JHBE diesel engine at 44.0 hp (32 kW), which gives a max speed about 5.9 knots.

The fuel tank has a capacity of 174 liters (45 US gallons, 38 imperial gallons).

Sailing characteristics

This section covers widely used rules of thumb to describe the sailing characteristics. Please note that even though the calculations are correct, the interpretation of the results might not be valid for extreme boats.

What is Capsize Screening Formula (CSF)?

The capsize screening value for Caliber 38 is 1.81, indicating that this boat could - if evaluated by this formula alone - be accepted to participate in ocean races.

What is Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed?

The theoretical maximal speed of a displacement boat of this length is 7.6 knots. The term "Theoretical Maximum Hull Speed" is widely used even though a boat can sail faster. The term shall be interpreted as above the theoretical speed a great additional power is necessary for a small gain in speed.

The immersion rate is defined as the weight required to sink the boat a certain level. The immersion rate for Caliber 38 is about 252 kg/cm, alternatively 1411 lbs/inch. Meaning: if you load 252 kg cargo on the boat then it will sink 1 cm. Alternatively, if you load 1411 lbs cargo on the boat it will sink 1 inch.

Sailing statistics

This section is statistical comparison with similar boats of the same category. The basis of the following statistical computations is our unique database with more than 26,000 different boat types and 350,000 data points.

What is Motion Comfort Ratio (MCR)?

What is L/B (Length Beam Ratio)?

What is a Ballast Ratio?

What is Displacement Length Ratio?

What is SA/D (Sail Area Displacement ratio)?

Pearson 38 Sailboat Review

  • By Gregg Nestor
  • Updated: December 15, 2010

38 ft steel sailboat pei

In 1989, Bill Shaw, thinking to improve on the overmarketed “cruiser/racer” theme by emphasizing the “cruiser” aspect, developed the Pearson 38. Although Pearson Yachts closed its doors in 1990, the Pearson 38 had a short but successful run among Pearson sailboats. In 1996, the Cal-Pearson Corporation reintroduced the Pearson 38 but launched only three boats before it, too, closed up shop.

The Pearson 38 has a flat sheer, a pronounced bow overhang, and a sugar-scoop stern with step-through transom. Low cockpit coamings and clean, appealing cabin-house lines offset the generous freeboard. Ample beam enhances both interior volume and form stability. Below the waterline, the boat has an externally mounted wing keel and an elliptical rudder. The solid, hand-laid-fiberglass hull and the balsa-cored deck are joined on an outward-facing flange. The joint is sealed with a polyurethane adhesive, bolted on 8-inch centers, and protected with a vinyl rubrail.

Belowdecks, the forward cabin features an island double berth, a hanging locker to starboard, and a locker to port. An opening hatch and two opening portlights allow for plenty of light and good ventilation. A solid teak bi-fold door opens from this cabin into the saloon, where a port-side settee and L-shaped seating around a centerline drop-leaf table to starboard easily seat eight for meals. The dinette also converts into a good-sized double berth. Aft of the port settee is an aft-facing navigation station and a wet locker.

The head compartment is located to port and aft of the companionway steps. It has a stainless-steel sink and a curtained-off shower area. A hinged seat covers the forward-facing head to keep it dry when the shower is in use.

Aft of the dinette and near the companionway, the L-shaped galley is fitted with an 8-cubic-foot icebox, a stainless-steel double sink, and a gimbaled two-burner propane stove with oven.

Aft of the galley is a second cabin with an athwarthships double berth that extends beneath the cockpit. A large hanging locker with built-in shelves provides stowage; an opening hatch and two portlights admit light and air.

The 38 is rigged as a masthead sloop with a keel-stepped spar, double spreaders, internal wire/rope halyards, and jiffy reefing. Standard equipment included a full-battened mainsail and a roller-furling headsail.

Under sail, the Pearson 38 tacks easily through 90 degrees and should make 6.5 knots in around 10 knots apparent. Its light-air performance is above average, and with judicious reefing, it can handle some pretty heavy air.

The Yanmar 3GM30F is beneath the galley sink. Accessibility, except for the oil dipstick, is near excellent. A panel in the cabin sole lifts out to reveal the stuffing box.

While well constructed, Pearson 38s aren’t bulletproof. Because they’re now two decades old, expect some deficiencies due to age and, possibly, to poor maintenance. Balsa-cored decks are always a potential source of problems, and portlights are prone to leaks.

The Pearson 38 is a solid, easily handled, and light-footed coastal cruiser that can accommodate two couples in comfort and safety. Its sailaway price 20 years ago was about $150,000. Expect to pay around half that for an average offering.

Cruising World’s Boat Of The Year judging is meant to evaluate new additions to the sailboat market. But stepping aboard the Pearson 38, we were impressed as much by what’s old as what’s new about the boat. The 38 offers ample measure of both.

What’s old is the legacy. Going back to the 1959 New York Boat Show when the fledgling Pearson company introduced its 28-foot Triton is to return to the cradle of production fiberglass-boatbuilding history. Much as Henry Ford revolutionized automobile production with his Model T, taking the car from the realm of rich-man’s luxury conveyance to Everyman’s utility vehicle, Pearson built 1,000 Tritons and myriad other successful boats for three decades at a price that beckoned whole generations of new sailors toward the water. But the vagaries of the market took their toll, and in 1990 Pearson Yachts went out of business, ending the Pearson line.

Until last year, that is, when a group of nostalgic investors returned to some of the designs and molds that were most successful in the 1980s and resurrected the Pearson name. Called the Cal-Pearson Corporation, this new company hopes to turn out 50 boats a year. The 38 was the first one launched; a 34 and a 39 are soon to follow.

We sailed the 38 on a light to moderately breezy October morning off Annapolis. This “new” boat, taken from a 1989 mold in which 21 previous hulls were laid up, features many refinements on a popular theme. Her sprightly ride harkened back to the coastal-oriented, racer/cruiser approach of her predecessors: We tacked easily through 90 degrees, making 6.4 knots in just under 10 knots apparent. Wind abeam, she topped out at 6.1 knots; with wind quartering, she made 5.8 knots. Running rigging is deftly organized, with main halyard, reefing lines and mainsheet led under the dodger into the cockpit. Lewmar 54 self-tailing primaries are standard, as is Harken roller furling for the jib.

The solid-FRP hull is laid up with osmosis-inhibiting vinylester resin below the waterline and polyester above. The deck is cored with end-grain balsa, except in high-stress areas where plywood is used for support; it is bolted to an outward-turned hull flange every eight inches and sealed with 3M 5200 polyurethane adhesive. The underbody on this boat features a wing keel with a modest 4’9″ draft, but deeper-draft options are available.

Changes to hull number 22 mark a shift toward the cruising end of the racer/cruiser spectrum. The new line of 38s features a step-through transom for more convenient boarding. The forward anchor well, formerly a shallow pan, has been deepened and made accessible from the interior to meet a cruiser’s anchoring demands more realistically. A dedicated propane locker with overboard vent has been added in accordance with ABYC recommendations. The toe rail was heightened by one third to improve safety underway.

Stepping below, you are greeted by a light, open interior. Ample ventilation is provided by a molded-in Dorade box, four opening hatches, and 10 opening ports. The boat’s only head is situated just to port and aft of the companionway steps; hence, it doesn’t take up any space forward of the main saloon’s aft bulkhead. A nav station and settee complete the port half of the main saloon; they are designed so that the navigator sits on the aft end of the settee facing aft to use the chart table — another space saver.

To starboard, an L-shaped galley with gimballed two-burner propane stove and oven occurs just outboard of the companionway steps. It also features an eight-cubic-foot ice box and stainless-steel double sink. Turning aft from the galley, you face a stateroom with a six-foot-long double berth that extends toward the transom under the cockpit. Forward of the galley is a U-shaped dinette. The fixed portion of the dinette table abuts the keel-stepped mast; a seat against the cabin’s forward bulkhead drops down to facilitate getting around the table. A drop-leaf section serves the port settee.

The forward cabin features an island double berth plus hanging locker. A small freshwater tank is located under this berth; a larger one appears under the aft-cabin berth. For maintaining mechanical systems, the boat is laid out well. No cabin headliner is installed, so the back side of any deck-mounted gear is easy to work on. The 38-horsepower Yanmar auxiliary is mounted below the galley sink — an arrangement that renders the engine noisy, but very accessible. Belts are easy to reach once you remove panels in the dinette; easy access to the oil-fill cap is by way of a hatch at the port side of the sink; the engine-oil dipstick is behind a panel on the sink’s aft side. Lifting a hatch in the cockpit sole reveals one of the most accessible stuffing boxes you’ll ever see aboard a sailboat in this size range.

The prototypes for the new Pearson line are being built under contract from Bristol Yachts, in Bristol, Rhode Island, with a conscious attempt by the builders to bump these boats up a step on the quality ladder from previous Pearsons. The interior of the new 38 is built with finely finished cherry paneling, for example, and all the deck hardware — hatches, ports, winches, travelers — is high-quality Lewmar gear. Construction bonuses, such as recessed genoa tracks and added midships chocks and cleats, round out the list of improvements. Sail-away price for this boat is $149,900. In terms of design innovation, there’s nothing fundamentally new here, but perhaps what’s new is not necessarily what’s best. What we have here is a fresh start for a well accepted boat whose production run a decade ago happened to be interrupted. The Pearson 38 is a solid, light-footed cruiser aboard which one or two couples should expect to have a wonderful tour of any far-reaching coastline.

Looking to Purchase Cheoy 38 Offshore & Looking 4 Advice

  • Add to quote

I have been looking at a -- Cheoy lee 38 Offshore, 1982 Model It's a project boat but not a loser (my view). Buy for $ 5,500.00 trucking cost $ 2,500.00 to my property So, $ 8,000.00 in boat. I understand the final cost -- will be another $ 35 K to be ready for blue water, or more $$.. I'm retired now and have been planning for a Caribbean trip from Panama City, FL and a little further as time goes on. I have a Catalina 25 and it has served me well over the years but not the right boat for long trips & open ocean cruises.. I have read up on the -- Cheoy 38 Offshore and has a good rating. This boat was a one owner boat and it has been around the world a couple times (so I was told).. I'm wondering how this boat would weather a storm ? I realize that it's your job to steer clear of storms but things happen; also the value of seamanship is a big factor as well. I'm really asking other Cheoy owners or folks that know this boat -- what they think of this boat... be it .... Good or Bad or Middle of the Road. Thank You, Avery

If it has teak decks it is not something I would buy. They leak, cost a fortune to replace and make the boat significantly hotter in sunny weather. If it has wooden cabin sides these are prone to rot where they join the deck and even the timber for the job will give you sticker shock.

38 ft steel sailboat pei

TQA is correct - if it has teak decks...walk they were good boats, considering their age when compared to similar age boats....however they were made in the far east and like Marine Traders (trawler/power boat) build quality was all over the place. I have seen flawless ones and some that required every piece of metal installed to be reinstalled in the first year of owner ship, when new in the late 70's and early 80's. Wood work was most of the time quite good, but mechanicals not so much. They are narrow in comparison to boats of today, and sail slower and react slower as well. This one may make a decent project, if you have deep pockets, but you could spend twice your acquisition costs just taking up the teak decks, if it has them, and redoing the glass work.....UNLESS you do all the work yourself. Removing teak is not for the weak kneed or soft hands crowd, and the redo of the deck, glass work and fairing is almost as bad. Side wood can be resealed or epoxied, unless your wood is totally gone. btw, I owned a clipper 33 and was part owner on a 38 and then a 41 offshore..

HighFly_27 said: Yes, I have been reading quite a lot since I posted this thread. This boat had a lot of good things going for it (money spent) like the >> the haul was completely done, new mast, etc. . I have read alot & quite enough about the up & down workmanship to scare me off the deal. This top seal job is as a major job. Also, I will Not be completely happy with the boat when it's redone (slow & other items). Now, I'm looking for a better deal and it will come along. I live in Bonifay, FL and withing 100 miles of Pensacola and other prime areas for used sailboats. Thanks Again, Avery Click to expand...

If you are talking about a Cheoy Lee 38 Offshore, I would check out the Cheoy Lee association website as suggested for information that is reliable. I have owned a 1980 Cheoy Lee offshore 38 for 5 years and have had no problems with mine. These are very well built boats and many have made the journey around the world. Good examples that are ready for sailing are generally selling for 45-55K They were not built in the far East to my knowledge rather they were built in the then British Hong Kong Cheoy Lee Shipyards. They claimed to be built to the Loyds standard. There is lot's of Teak both on deck and below. Like most boats with Teak decks properly maintained will not leak. The teak Decks can be removed and I have seen a few that this has been done to -certainly an option if the decks are to far gone to repair.

There is a reason why they get called LEAKY TEAKIES you have accepted that they have lots of teak now accept that they also leak. The leaks can be fixed but the ingress of water especially into the plywood cored decks usally means you have a rot problem to deal with as well. Removing teak decks and the top skin and the rotten ply then cutting new ply to size and reskinning the deck is a monster job. Get the likes of Charlie Cobra to do it and I would guess at 20k + DIY 18 months hard part time graft and 18 months lost sailing. There are LOTS of boats that can be sailed right away. Life is short go sailing!

Avery there is a cautionary saying about building your own boat. It is not kind. "Fools build boats for wise men to sail" Expect your FIRST boat build to take much longer than you think. Here is a good example and also an excellent record of a build of a 44 ft Roberts in steel. CLICKY It is also worth noting that they had a scare on their first offshore sail and seem to have given up on the idea. As a full time liveaboard myself I would make a lightweight 44 footer about the max you would want and something around 38 to 40 ft ideal. If you want a steel boat then look at the French sites as they build a variety of steel boats, not pretty but good cruising boats. I would buy and not build at your age. There are too many sad stories of people not getting to enjoy the fruits of their labours.

Hi Google Cheoy Offshore 38 , "Quest". It is in serious need of TLC. You will have to replace the spars to begin with. Look it up.I owned a CL 38 for 15 years. I cried the day I sold it. It was a gem and I singlehanded it with ease. I hated the isusu motor but it was indistructable. The electrical panel needs to be upgraded and the battery box expanded. I doubled the insulation in the ice box and added a refrideration unit. I have sailed it in 50 knot winds with comfort and confidence with a storm jib up running down wind. I have sailed it in a whisper with a genicer and autopilot and read a good book for the day. If you get one you would be fool to let loose of it. Ray Richards did a superb job on the hull lines and the boat sits the water like it was born there. Do not put a wood stick on it. It will be much stiffer on a beat with an aluminum stick. I miss mine now after selling it 20 years ago. Paul Ames

Hi Again Some added information. I last saw my boat in Seattle at Elliot Bay marina. The boat was originally named ECHO which was on its main sail. I do not know where you are but if you could find and get ECHO you would be a happy happy sailor

The op made one post over a year ago.....

I have a 1977 41 offshore with teak decks that don't leak. It has had some issues the chain plates need to be inspected they have a tendency to corrode,I have replaced the engine perkins 4-108 and up graded many systems elctrical 12V and 110 DC plumming etc.Its a labor of love I don't want a newer boat, this one sails like no other in big wind and waves. Its safe and comfortable not fast. Fortunately it has a modern in mast roller furling and roller furling head sail with a large inventory of sails. I love Cheoy Lees there the prettiest boat in the harbor if well mantained.

Hi again. Looking at the replies I see a lot of concern about Teak decks, Far East builders and performance of the CL Offshore 38. So I thought I would offer my views on these. 1. My 38 was with me from the day it was built in 1979 until I sold it in 1994. I had no problems with any structural element in the boat. No leaks from the deck,no leaks at the chain plates, no leaks at the hull to deck joint. 2. It was, as all Cheoy Lees were in those years built in Hong Kong on Lantau Island. I was in the yard every Sat and Sunday watching it get built. My presence had nothing to do with the quality of the boat. I just wanted to watch. I sailed it away from the yard. I sailed it in Hong Kong for a year and they shipped it back to Seattle and sailed it there for a number of years and finally to San Francisco where I sailed it on the Bay---usually in 25 to 30 knot winds. 3. The early "pretty" clipper bow CL's were good for sailing in strong winds as they were very heavy displacement boats with bow to stern keels. The Offshore 38 was a modern design by Ray Richards and had a cut away keel with a skeg hung rudder which made the boat track like an arrow ( a straight one) and allowed it to be very responsive to the helm, would sail in slop and in a whisper with great performance. 4. The boats that have given boats a bad name in the Far East are all built in Taiwan or China by Taiwanese or Chinese companies that come and go. The current yard of Cheoy Lee has moved to China and is still owned and managed by the Lo family. The yard builds modern high end motor yachts now. It s set up as a very technological modern plant run by well educated highly experienced members of the Lo family ( I think the third or fourth, maybe fifth generation since Cheoy Lee was founded in Shanghai) and produces some of the finest high end motor yachts on the water. Unfortunately the margins on motor yachts are much better than on sail boats so they do not make sail boats anymore.

The Pearson 38 : 1989–1991

Cruising performance, comfort, ease of handling, and quality.

Cruising Performance

The new Pearson 38 is a performance cruiser, which combines the best features of several other Pearson models. The objective was to produce a boat that could comfortably accommodate two couples in their own private staterooms in a length that could easily be handled by just two people. To accomplish this we designed the Pearson 38 with ample beam, a long waterline, generous freeboard and an easily handled rig. Draft was kept to 4’9" by using our proven wing keel design, which also tends to dampen the boat’s motion in a seaway. The double spreader rig and recessed inboard genoa tracks permit closer sheeting angles resulting in better windward performance. The fully battened mainsail provides better sail shape in light air and makes furling a lot easier than conventional mainsails. The roller furling headsail with padded luff makes dousing the jib a snap and allows you to reef it without causing undue strain on the sailcoth. All the sail control lines are led aft to the cockpit for safety and convenience. No need to go forward to raise sails, put in a reef, or adjust halyard tension. The large cockpit has several modern amenities that makes cruising more enjoyable; comfortable backrests, contoured seating, an on-deck ice box, even a hot and cold shower at the walkthrough transom. Now you can rinse off after swimming without going below dripping salt water. The transom itself has a built-in swim platform, which makes boarding a dinghy convenient and safe. It also has a comfortable boarding ladder that’s easy on bare feet. Other key deck features include custom anchor roller, midship chocks and cleats, sturdy teak toe rails, and of course, a foredeck anchor well. Below deck, instead of conventional V berths forward there’s a real double bed which is easier to make-up, more comfortable to sleep in, and just plain cozier. It also has an area underneath with generous sized drawers. In the main salon there’s a centerline table which seats a crowd with its leaves extended and folds down to create extra space when not in use. If you need to sleep a third couple, the dinette area can be quickly converted to a double berth. To port, the settee berth doubles as a seat for the aft facing chart table which is surrounded by plenty of space for built-in electronics. Just aft of the chart table is an extra wet locker and bank or drawers suitable for navigational accessories and other small items. The galley is to starboard – convenient to the companionway but out of the traffic pattern. It includes double sinks, a huge icebox, propane stove with oven, and plenty of stowage. The engine is located under the sinks and is easily accessed from all four sides. The owner’s stateroom is aft of the galley and its large double berth extends under the cockpit. An overhead hatch and two opening ports into the cockpit assure plenty of light and ventilation. A large hanging locker with built-in shelves provides plenty of space for personal gear. Opposite the aft stateroom is the roomy head compartment with attractive vanity, mirrors and enclosed hamper bag. The shower curtain keeps the vanity area from getting wet and since it’s only on one side it doesn’t cling to you. A hinged cover prevents the toilet from getting wet and since shiny formica surfaces on the bulkheads and door shed water like a fiberglass enclosure. Overall, the new Pearson 38 is a boat that satisfies the requirements of the sailor who wants cruising performance, comfort, ease of handling, and quality. We’re convinced the Pearson 38 meets all of these criteria and also includes another important ingredient…value. Come sail with us!

Roberts Offshore 38 on the hard stand

THE DRAFTING TABLE by Robert H. Perry

Roberts 38 Interior photo 01

We at Castoff feel very fortunate to be able to bring to our readers his evaluations and comments on designs featured in this section.

Bruce Roberts-Goodson has made his name in the yacht design field as one of the foremost designers of sailing craft for the home builder. It is probably safe to say, that there are more Bruce Roberts-Goodson designs being built by amateur builders than any other designer. Having worked in the field of designing for the home builder myself, let me assure you that it is more demanding of the designer than designing for professional yards. The designer must tell the builder what to do and also just exactly how to do it.  It seems that there is never an end to the questions of the home builder and I used to anticipate the day when I received the letter asking explicit directions on how to wipe a nose.

The ROBERTS 38 was designed for a client in Venezuela as a handicap racer and a family cruiser. To date 300 copies of this plan have been sold. The hull features quite moderate proportions. The keel and skeg are both generous enough to insure easy steering and good tracking. When the designer says "handicap" racing, I’m sure he doesn’t mean I.O.R. The ROBERTS 38 really has no I.O.R. features at all. This actually is a positive selling point in today’s I.O.R. fearing world. To compliment the variety of building materials listed for the hull, the designer has designed the boat in a round bilge or hard chine configuration. This is certainly a plus if you are interested in building a steel or aluminium yacht. I’m sure the round bilge version would be a faster yacht although possibly slightly more tender than the hard chine version.

The interior is offered as a centre cockpit version or as the standard aft cockpit configuration as shown. The drawing shows clearly the arrangement and there is little I can find fault with. The interior shows no effort to crowd in "fad" accommodations. All the areas are roomy and very usable.

In designing a yacht with the sale of stock plans in mind, Roberts must avoid radical features or specialisation that would limit the appeal of the yacht. With this in mind, it is not surprising to find that the overall impression of the ROBERTS 38 is one of a very conservative design. Or, put another way, the extraordinary thing about the ROBERTS 38 is that there is nothing extraordinary about the design. While this may sound a little negative, in this case it is positive and accounts for the tremendous acceptance of the design.

The plans come complete with full size patterns to eliminate the lofting stage. This is sort of like using the cross-country skis that you don’t have to wax, not traditional but increasingly popular. The plans include 30 sheets of drawings with very little left for the imagination. The step by step building procedures are fully outlined in the drawings. If you are the type that enjoys building, and you are contemplating building a yacht, I would advise that you go to a designer that deals solely with the home builder. He will be most understanding of your problems and probably will have answered your questions numerous times. I think Bruce Roberts-Goodson has proven himself many times over in this area.

 Letter  from a U.S. Offshore 38 Builder.

Mr Bruce Roberts,

I’m ashamed with myself for not writing and sending you pictures of the boat I built from your plans because your design has presented me a very beautiful boat. This boat is complimented in each little harbour we have visited. People on the water have come by to remark on a beautiful boat. Naturally that swells my pride. So you see,- I feel guilty- you should share in the praise this boat has received.

Pictures don’t describe the real entity, but this is all we can offer you now. Maybe our enthusiasm and pleasure described in this letter will help reveal the boat’s real character. I’m not a great sailor but this boat makes me look great. It sails close to wind well, and in a light breeze moves gracefully. In strong winds with smaller sails on it is stiff and swift. I couldn’t be much more comfortable in my easy chair at home. My wife and I handle it quite easily now and we are past the middle years of our lives.

From the time I received the materials from Clark Craft until I put it in the water, 13 months elapsed. During this time I held onto a full time job as a carpenter to give me the money to keep this boat going. Needless to say, I, like many we’ve met since who are building boats, didn’t have all the money at the beginning. Somehow, and strange it is, money seems to come along to build a boat.

Temporarily, we are now living on the boat in Vallejo, and each day and each week we are learning more about the trust we place in this boat. It has faced up to some good challenges and we are again shown the durability this boat has.

I’m glad we chose your design and whenever I’m asked you can be sure I’m happy to say this is a Bruce Roberts design.

A happy boat builder (amateur)

Dick and Dorothy Larson

  7. Review of Caliber 38

Keel. The Caliber 38 is equipped with a fin keel. The fin keel is the most common keel and provides splendid manoeuvrability. The downside is that it has less directional stability than a long keel. The boat can enter most marinas as the draft is just about 1.52 - 1.62 meter (4.99 - 5.29 ft) dependent on the load.
