Inside Azzam: The Incredible Superyacht

A yacht is arguably one of man’s most beautiful creations to grace the ocean and seas. They are not only gigantic but luxurious, durable, timeless, and innovative in design. One yacht stands out and embodies both luxury and class; Azzam Superyacht. 

Not only do superyachts provide individuals with an ability to experience the world’s oceans unlike any other vessel, they are also a reflection of what’s possible when innovation meets design. From engineering to construction, it’s no wonder superyachts are revered for their beauty and immense capabilities. Yachts which are as long as 78 feet are said to be superyachts, and Azzam fits perfectly in such a class. 

Azzam Superyacht is currently the largest yacht in the world . Its size is gigantic to the point that the paint used to cover its exterior can be used on 38,000 cars. It was launched in April 2013 by Lürssen Yachts, thereby displacing the previous record-holder Eclipse (which is owned by the Russian billionaire and Chelsea football club owner, Roman Abramovich) as the largest yacht in the world. 

Specifications of Azzam Superyacht

This phenomenal Superyacht took a whopping four years to build , involving the efforts and professionalism of the world’s most experienced. Azzam’s yacht design is considered a massive achievement as it was both complex and challenging to execute, with such finesse and excellence. 

The strenuous construction and humongous human resources needed to build this 590-feet-long superyacht has resulted in the creation of one of the world’s finest superyacht. 

However, the goal wasn’t to build the biggest yacht in the world but rather to combine luxury, comfort, balance, elegance, and functionality in one masterpiece.

Luxury & Interior

While the exterior of a yacht may appeal to some, the most elegant features lie in its interior. Christophe Leoni designed Azzam’s interior and modelled it after a relaxed French Empire style. With this masterpiece, Azzam “eclipsed the Eclipse” in style, luxury, and prowess.

This incredible Superyacht boasts approximately 50 suites, can accommodate 36 guests, and needs a crew of 60 people. Its exquisite complexity and class are unique and astonishing. Each cabin is laden with a certain feel of royalty, style, and comfort.

Engineer Mubarak Saad al Ahbadi supervised Azzam’s technical engineering. What’s more, the superyacht was developed by Lürssen and had its exterior completed by Nauta Yacht. What’s more, Azzam boasts a top speed of 31.5knots, which is achieved thanks to her innovative water-jet propulsion system. This yacht also has a missile defense system! 

In conclusion

The Azzam sits at an estimated US $600M in value, which is about $100million more than Eclipse. This isn’t surprising when you consider its ground breaking technology and the immense value it offers. Indeed, three years of building and one year of engineering didn’t go to waste. Azzam is unparalleled, and its elegance is unlike anything else!

Azzam: Behind the design of the world's largest superyacht

In October 2013, Lürssen shipyard delivered the largest privately owned superyacht in the world, 180 metre Azzam . With a staggering 13,000GT (approx), the all-white yacht has held its title unchallenged for nearly seven years. Although this reign will come to an end with the delivery of 183 metre REV , it is a project that has captured the attention and imagination of those who have laid eyes on her.

Designed by Italian studio Nauta Design , the focus for the team was to create a design with a strong character while also being able to endure the test of time. Using a combination of elements from contemporary, modern architecture, Azzam was designed to mark a milestone in the global superyacht fleet for decades to come.

“ Azzam features balanced, modern architecture composed of straight lines and proportional volumes, which are some of the main design principles of Nauta Design,” explained Mario Pedol, co-founder of Nauta Design.

“When we were called to participate in pitching for the exterior styling of this yacht we knew it would be the most demanding work of our career, defined by the strictest and most challenging requests in term of dimensions, performances and technology. What made us confident to be able to deal with such a challenge was the interpretation of the client’s brief. The best technology was required in order to obtain the highest performance possible.”

Inspired by the studio’s earlier concepts Light 80 and Light 90, 82 and 90 metres respectively, Azzam was a giant leap in scale and presented both creative and technical challenges, with pressure added to the project by a tight deadline for delivery.

"We all made a huge effort to comply with an incredibly short, thus very challenging, design and production schedule which Lürssen actually succeeded in achieving — even a month ahead of time,” said Pedol in an interview with BOAT International in 2014.

Azzam ’s record-breaking build time was under three years from steel cutting, following one year of engineering according to the German shipyard. This is much owed to Burgess who acted as the owner's technical consultant and project manager throughout the entire build.

Azzam has an official top speed of 30 knots thanks to two diesel engines combined with two gas turbines that produce 70,095 kW (94,000hp) and are connected to waterjets. This is an incredible achievement for a vessel of this size, made all the more significant when considering the speed in which the project took to deliver.

“We’ve had a lot of compliments for Azzam ,” Pedol revealed to BOAT International during a candid interview in early 2015. “They all talk about elegance and balance, that she doesn’t look as big as she is, and I think this is a good achievement.”

Azzam die größte Megayacht der Welt: Made by Lürssen-Werft

Roman Abramowitsch wurde abgelöst, seine Eclipse ist nicht mehr die “Größte Yacht der Welt”. Die Azzam hat nun den Titel “größte Privatyacht der Welt” inne. Das Schiff ist ebenso wie die Eclipse in Deutschland gebaut worden. Die Ecplise wurde bei Blohm und Voss in Hamburg gebaut und die Azzam ist auf der Lürssen Werft in Bremen entstanden. Die Azzam gehört laut der deutschen Wikipedia dem Prinz al-Walid ibn Talal Al Saud, der im übrigen der reichste Araber ist und zudem die Kingdom Holding führt. Er ist aber mit seinen 10 Milliarden Dollar Vermögen nur auf Rang 23 der aktuellen Forbes-Liste. Da ist also durchaus noch Potenzial nach oben. Wenn man der englischen Wikipedia glauben darf, dann ist der Besitzer Scheich Khalifa, das Oberhaupt (Präsident) der vereinigten arabischen Emirate. Für die Megayacht Azzam sollen rund 490 Millionen Euro bezahlt worden sein. Das wären in etwa 140 Millionen Euro mehr als die Sphinx-Schiffe wie die AIDAstella und so weiter pro Stück gekostet haben. Abramowitsch hatte seinerzeit bei B+V zweimal die Eclipse noch während der Bauphase verlängern lassen um auch ja die größte aller Privatyachten zu haben, schlussendlich war die Yacht nur einen halben Meter länger als die Dubai. Ich bin gespannt ob er sich damit abfinden kann oder ob Blohm und Voss, oder sogar die Lürssen Werft nicht demnächst einen Nachfolger für die Eclipse bauen wird…

Die Azzam ist mit ihren 180 Metern Länge sogar größer als einige Kreuzfahrtschiffe, sie ist länger als die MS Astor (176 Meter), die MS Delphin (157 Meter), die Ocean Majesty (136 Meter) die MS Hamburg (144 Meter) und auch nur 23 Meter kürzer als die kleinen AIDAs, wie die AIDAvita, AIDAaura und AIDAcara. Mit ihren 94000 PS schafft sie es auf über 31 Knoten Maximalgeschwindigkeit.

Das Design der Azzam stammt von Nauta Yachts, die Inneneinrichtung hat Christoph Leoni entworfen. Die Azzam ist sieben Decks hoch, der größte Salon soll über 500 Quadratmeter haben…

Ein bisschen kleiner (155 Meter) aber auch aus Deutschland ist die Al SAID vom Sultan aus Oman , die trifft man relativ häufig in Dubrovnik, der scheint ein Kroatien-Fan zu sein. Der werte Herr fährt im übrigen immer im Konvoi, zu seiner Megayacht gibt es noch ein Versorgungsschiff die Fulk al Salamah die nur unwesentlich kleiner ist.

Im übrigen stammen aus den Top 100 Megayachten auf der Welt fast 50 Prozent aus deutschen Werften. Die Inhaber sind aber bei weitem nicht alle deutsch. Die Araber führen die Liste an, gefolgt von den Russen und Amerikanern.

Der Trend geht aber nicht bei allen in die Richtung “größer, größer”, es gibt auch einige die ihre riesigen Privatyachten verkauft haben weil sie damit kaum noch in die kleinen Häfen reinkamen und haben sich daher kleinere Luxusyachten bauen lassen…

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
