Licence to sail in croatia.

To sail a yacht bareboat in Croatia the Croatian authorities require the skipper to be over 18 and have a sailing licence issued by a statutory authority. Currently this would be a photo card RYA Coastal Skipper practical certificate or higher, Bareboat Chartering Standard (ASA 104) or the equivalent from your country, ICC (International Certificate of Competence) for sail or an IPC (International Proficiency Certificate) or SLC (Sailing Licence & Credentials) with NauticEd.  A VHF radio license is also required. The co-skipper should also be competent to assist the skipper to sail the yacht you are chartering and be over 18 years old. Higher level certification, such as Yacht Master is often required for larger yachts, for example, catamarans around 45 feet+. We can help you navigate your way to have the right qualifications and experience for the yacht you want to charter.

How much does it cost to moor a boat in Croatia?

The average mooring fee for a 40-foot sailing boat  is 80€  per night within the summer season. You can expect to pay extra  50% for same-sized sailing catamaran .

What is the safety deposit?

Deposit is the insurance (assurance), that you will return the sail boat  back in its previous condition. As a boat's captain, you take the full responsibility for potential damages caused on board during your trip. The deposit is charged at the charter's office at the check in and is 100% refundable, if the boat is returned undamaged . If you don't posess valid licenses, chartering a skippered yacht in Croatia is advised.

The deposit amount is set by the charter policy (depends on the boat length, age and insurance rate) payable by VISA, EUROCARD, DINERS or cash. We can offer a deposit insurance with non-refundable fee (app.10% of the full insurance sum).

What are the obligatory extras on bareboat charters?

Obligatory extras are additional items that you pay at the charter office during the check in procedure. Some of these items you already pay through the yacht charter, at the reservation. It is required to refuel the tanks before returning to home port. However, there are some obligatory extras, that you need to pay at spot:

• Croatia local tax (1.35€ per day a person)
• Security Deposit for boat
• Port and marina fees on route
• Food and provisioning

Is it possible to insure the deposit for a yacht charter?

Most of the Croatia charter companies  approve this option. It is required to let us know in advance that you want to insure the securtiy deposit. Please note that this covers most of the damages depending on the insurance policy of the  specific boat owner. What exactly the damage waiver covers (usually the sails, hull, loss of fenders or a winch handle, small scratches and ropes).

Damage waiver is a non-refundable part. The insurance amount depends on the age, the length and the insurance policy of the vessel. Some charters require a small refundable part (10%) to cover the damages like "fee for unblocking the toilet, gross negligence damage, vandalism and if the yacht is not fueled at the check out.

A bareboat yacht charter is a type of yacht rental where a charterer rents a yacht without a crew or any other additional services. Essentially, the charterer or one of his crew becomes the skipper and takes full responsibility for navigating and operating the yacht. Bareboat charters are typically more affordable than crewed charters but require the charterer to have sailing experience and the necessary certifications to operate the yacht. The charterer is also responsible for all aspects of the trip, including navigation, provisioning, and cleaning. This type of charter is perfect for experienced sailors who want the freedom to explore on their own terms.

Thanks to its indented coast, there are over 1000 islands , islets, rocks, and bays on the Adriatic. Most of the islands are not permanently populated during the year. Croatia’s Adriatic archipelago consists of three main regions, northern, central, and southern Adriatic. The North Adriatic is Istria and Kvarner, the Middle Adriatic is north and central Dalmatia (Zadar, Šibenik, Split), and the South Adriatic is south Dalmatia (Dubrovnik).

Weather conditions for sailing vary by season. Spring and autumn are characterized mainly by north and south winds, while in the summer, the most frequent are western and southwestern winds. In the low season, April, May, and October, prices are much lower, and fewer boats on the sea.

What qualifications are required for a bareboat charter in Croatia?

The skipper must possess sailing and navigational experience adequate to the boat size and tonnage to charter a bareboat sailing yacht, catamaran, or motorboat in Croatia. Besides experience, it is necessary to have a skipper qualification/license .

In addition to skipper qualification, the VHF license is required. The VHF license can have as well one of the crew members. To check if your license is adequate for a bareboat yacht charter in Croatia, please send us the license scan by email or check the Recognized certificates for operating boats and yachts .

Security deposit & Deposit Insurance

For all bareboat yacht charters in Croatia, the charterer must leave a security deposit at check-in. The amount of the security deposit depends on the size and value of the vessel, typically € 1000-5000. The security deposit is returned at check out entirely if there is no damage to the boat caused by the skipper or his crew. The client can pay the security deposit in cash or by card. The alternative to a security deposit is the insurance of the deposit. This means you will pay a smaller amount - non-refundable and leave the reduced part of the deposit - refundable part. The insurance of the deposit is not available for all charter boats.

It is advisable for each skipper to make skipper insurance with one of the insurance companies. You can apply online for skipper and crew insurance with EIS .  However, even when you have skipper insurance, you will leave a security deposit at check-in. In case of damage settlement, with the proper documentation and invoice, you can get a refund for the paid insurance claim.

Useful Tips for Bareboat Charter

When chartering a bareboat yacht, you take full responsibility as a skipper for yourself, your crew, and the boat. Before sailing out, we recommend planning the sailing itinerary according to the weather forecast and making the food provision . There are markets and shops on all of the inhabited islands in Croatia. Therefore, it is unnecessary to buy groceries in advance for the whole week, for the first two or three days is advisable.

As mentioned, with 1800 km of coastline, the variety is quite large, so you should make the decision according to your wishes and preferences. When it comes to yacht charter, we divide the sailing areas into Istria (Pula, Pomer), Kvarner Bay (Krk, Cres), North Dalmatia (Zadar, Sibenik), Central Dalmatia (Split, Trogir) and South Dalmatia (Dubrovnik) . All mentioned sailing areas offer a good quality of the nautical infrastructure (ports, marinas, buoy fields) and are rich in tradition, culture, historic old towns, local gastronomy and much more.

Necessary documents for bareboat charter Croatia: For bareboat charter in Croatia, you need a valid sailing license & VHF license. It is always better to check if your license is valid on the website of Ministry of the Sea, Transport and Infrastructure Sailing licence in Croatia and then look for " Recognised certificates for operating boats and yachts ". Or you can send the documents which you have and we'll check it for you and confirm validation of the licence.  

Check-in on board is at 17:00 hour on Saturday . By that time all boats will be ready. If you are arriving earlier please come to our office so we can immediately finish up some "paperwork":

• you will receive documents of the boat and weather forecast, etc.
• you will be asked to show your original skipper license
• we will confirm the crew list and charge you tourist tax
• payments can be made by credit card or cash
• you will be advised about using our support line

Only after the documents procedure in the office, technical check-in on the boat can be provided. Until 17:00 we will start the technical check-in procedure with technical equipment list which should be signed by the client and Ultra Sailing staff who made the handover. We give our best to prepare the boat earlier, once you arrive, we can tell you if the boat will be ready earlier.  We kindly advise that just one or two persons, usually the skipper and co-skipper do the technical check-in briefing with one staff member from Ultra Sailing as it goes faster. In the meantime, the rest of the crew can go shopping or for a lunch.

Safety deposit for bareboat yacht Charter Croatia :

All boats are insured and safety deposit can be left in two ways: Refundable deposit: Can be left by credit card as pre-authorisation (preferred) or in cash. After returning your boat deposit amount will be unblocked (returned to the client). A safety  deposit is a part that insurance does not cover for example lost dinghy or broken window. If the damage is smaller than the safety deposit (for example lost boat fender approx 400 HRK) we will unblock your card anyway and charge the amount of real cost (example boat fender 400 HRK). All damages should be reported immediately on the support number. In case of bigger damage maximum charge is the amount of deposit written in your confirmation and in the price list. Non-refundable deposit-damage loss/waiver: For those who would like a  Non-refundable deposit while sailing bareboat ( written also in the price list ) we will need for the insurance following details: copy of skippers license and passport or ID and address. The payment for non-refundable deposit will be charged into 2 parts: non-refundable part (180€-440€) depends of the boat and will be paid directly to insurance + 100€ refundable part in cash which will be returned after check out and without any damage.

• save the water , Croatia mainland is full of fresh water but islands are not, so please save the water whenever you can (do not wash boats or take long showers).
• Croatian tap water is safe for drinking so you can always refill your bottles (but not the water tanks on your sailing boats).
• save energy: sail as much as you can, try windsurfing (Korčula area), kayak (island Mljet-national Park), avoid motor scooters and motor boats.
