Compare The Most Popular 40ft Production Catamarans

Stephen and I are always exploring new catamaran models so we can share our insights with you. The information below continues to be valid, but we have a new 40ft catamaran comparison of later models for you to peruse.

40ft catamarans

We created a chart of each catamaran with a standard spec, ex-factory to compare the specifications and price of each boat. These catamarans compare very similarly on base price but there are a few differences.

Nautitech sail

The Bali 4.0 has a unique single cockpit / saloon area, entirely flush and unencumbered by bulkheads, accessible by a folding glass door on electric rams (kind of like a tilting garage door). This opens up the area and make it look like a much bigger boat. This catamaran combines some of the most innovative new characteristics in catamaran design which makes it a very desirable. It is quite a peppy sailboat and easy to maneuver.

Fountaine Pajot 40

The Fountaine Pajot 40 is replacing the Lipari 41 and is basically a smaller version of the successful Fountaine Pajot Helia 44 . It has a lot more volume than the Lipari, has a super stylish interior with island berths for the owner cabins (a much requested feature). It is lightweight but is smaller in volume than most of the the other models. However, because the living space was moved forward in the bows, there is still lots of room. We have not seen a boat yet, so the jury is out on how the boat will perform with these new changes. This model will be unveiled at the Paris boat show in December [2015].

The Leopard 40 ( video ) is heavier than the other models. The bridgedeck clearance is lower than those seen on French or Canadian cruising catamarans. Their philosophy is that a lower bridgedeck reduces the boat’s center of gravity with a wider stern to provide more buoyancy aft. However, a higher bridgedeck clearance translates into less slamming. We have owned cats with lower and higher clearances and a higher bridgedeck clearance definitely has less slamming. Read this article about bridgedeck clearance to make your own informed decision.

Lagoon 400S2

The Lagoon 400S2 has been on the market for a couple of years and is extremely popular. The S2 has decent performance with a lot of interior volume as can be seen here in the specifications. It has the biggest volume of the five 40ft catamaran models. This volume is said (by the competition) to translate into less performance but judging from rallies held around the world, it seems that the Lagoon really holds it’s own. Judging by the feedback from delivery skippers and owners on performance, the 400S2 makes a good performing cruising yacht. The interior is luxurious, accommodations are spacious and the cockpit is a nice size, easy to sail and good for a live aboard couple.

All of these catamarans are very acceptable cruising catamarans for a couple with lots of interior and exterior living space. These cats will do well as live-aboard and well as charter boats. Much of your choice will depend on personal preference. Do you prefer a “luxurious” interior, lots of interior volume and reasonable sailing performance, a more innovative design and optimal performance. Is chartering or cruising your ultimate goal or do you prefer a bit of both? All of these things should be weighed before you make a final choice.

The Fountaine Pajot released the new Lucia 40 to the Miami show in February 2016, and boat enthusiasts received it with a lot of enthusiasm.

The new Lucia 40 was designed by Oliver Racoupeau, and it is a promising take on the future of modern designs. The hulls are moderately narrow but wide enough for the double berths in both cabins to fit in. The topsides are high and have big rectangular windows that allow natural light into the hulls and give a marvelous view from the cabins.  

The boat has a lot of space for a 40-footer which has been put to good use to provide a lot of options for a comfortable lifestyle on board. A displacement of 19,500 pounds and an Alpi wood finishing puts the cat on the lighter end of the cruising spectrum.

The Lagoon 40 has come to replace her previous 39 and 400 models. Designed by VPLP, the new cat adopted the style of her larger predecessors, including the angular transoms, lengthier rectangular hull ports to let natural light stream in below. The design also includes a coach roof that shapes into an upward angled composite hard drop, giving her a more “aggressive” look. Special attention was placed into keeping the weight low.

The interior has not gone through any overly dramatic change, but the tweaks have been given an extra feel of luxury. The symbolic white fiberglass or gray cabinetry of the 39 has been discarded for richer shades of dark brown Alpi wood and plenty of leather accents. The lagoon 40 has 3-4 cabins readily available for use.

Renowned naval architects Marc van Peteghem and Vincent Lauriot Prevost of VPLP design have gone above and beyond with this modern marvel. While the defining features of the previous lagoon remained, very significant changes were made to the rigs and hulls to boost sailing performance. The Gemini cat has always been one of the silent achievers in American boatbuilding. Once again, they have delivered greatness with the Legacy 35.

She still has roughly the same looks as her predecessors with the familiar hardtop pilothouse and elongated upswept side ports. Her cockpit, however, has been rebranded to include an optional aft bench for stowage.

The interior layout has seen changes, but this has improved the comfort she provides in a lot of ways. The saloon has been designed to take a U-shape on the centerline in the raised pilothouse.

Isla 40 Review

Another sailing catamaran model of the most popular size was presented by the shipyard Fountaine Pajot to the general public at the Bandol show, which replaced the canceled Cannes 2020 Boat Show due to the pandemic. It is no wonder that the Isla 40, a 40-foot (12.1 m) sailing cruiser, caused quite a stir. In addition to the fact that a new “player” of the shipyard entered the field, she became the heir to such a bestseller as the Lucia 40, which in turn continued the tradition of the equally popular Lavezzi 40 catamaran.

Both predecessors brought the shipyard both fame and increased demand. And now we can already say that the Isla 40 has inherited the best features of the 40-footers from Fountaine Pajot, complementing them with technological and design innovations.

Isla 40 Review

Like the previous catamarans of the shipyard, the name of the next model bears a name that evokes thoughts of distant exotic islands. One of the test teams called the boat "a floating Irish island", referring to Isla de Muerta. Although one could suggest also the Caribbean Isla de Yerba or the Isla Grande of Tierra del Fuego…

The pleasure of sea romance under sail, solitude with nature, family coziness and comfort in an exotic setting - these ideas imbue the spirit and innovative design of the Isla 40.

While approaching the pier, our team decided that the review would not be complete if it did not compare the Isla 40 catamaran with its predecessors - double-hull sailing Lucia 40 and Lavezzi 40.

Shipyard Fountaine Pajot has chosen the right strategy: they improve the 40-footer with each new model, and do not radically redesign the base. Native DNA is carefully preserved in each model of this size. Designers and naval architects, acting

as breeders for a new project, bring to perfection what was not available in the previous ones due to insufficiently developed technologies at the time or for some other reason.

We also agreed that during testing we will try to find out what distinguishes the Isla 40 catamaran from competitors such as Lagoon 40, Bali 40, Nautitech 40, Outremer 40. After all, 40-foot boats are the most popular boats in the world of catamarans. This is no coincidence: they are cheaper than the next in line in terms of size, yet provide almost the same level of comfort on board.

You can say about Alegria 67 that it is a luxurious and comfortable hotel afloat - then a catamaran 40 feet (12.1 m) long and 6 times cheaper can be described as a luxurious, comfortable and cozy floating home.

Home, Sweet Home

Here’s our floating house and it’s porch - the transoms. It really feels like coming back home, since there are no noticeable changes compared to the well-known Lucia 40. The location of the raft is in the same place, there are also stainless ducks and davits made of the same metal.

The cockpit has not been radically changed either - it still occupies the largest area and volume among the cockpits of all 40-foot catamarans. Lots of space, a comfortable L-shaped sofa in the dining area, a wraparound table, a large aft sofa and a lounger.

The table can be made of teak or plastic - at the choice of the buyer. The buyer also determines whether the table will be folding or not. Here, also optionally, you can place a plancha or a barbecue.

We tested the variation with plancha and a transformer table since there were 8 of us boarding the cat. After all, our goal was to check the readiness of Isla 40 not only for a family vacation or a trip with 3-4 friends, but also for commercial use. A folding table will allow you to increase the number of diners in the open air by two people. We confirm that everybody was accommodated, even with some room left.

Nearly all cockpit sofas have seats that lift up to reveal free storage drawers underneath. These lockers are of different sizes in length, so even rather bulky items can be stashed.

You can optionally add a soft back to the lounger on the starboard side, and then the lounger also turns into a comfortable sofa. We put a small refrigerator in the drawer of the large sofa near the table, and we had soft drinks at hand all the time. Very convenient: you crouch, take out a can, take a step and hand the drink to the skipper at the helm.

To the Helm!

What, just next to the table? Yes, this is one of the many amenities of this catamaran. Just a couple of steps from the table and a couple of steps up - and you are at the helm, if there is a need to replace a tired skipper.

And the skipper himself freely talks with those sitting at the table almost face to face - there is a special cutout made in the partition for this purpose. Full control of traffic safety and port side stern with simultaneous communication is a great opportunity for family travel and for charters.

So, we are at the helm. And here you won’t really surprise us with anything, since we managed to be surprised and admired by all these solutions when we got acquainted with the shipyard’s previous 40-foot models.

The steering wheel can be found right on the hull of the control post, next to the winches, which are located a little higher. For such a vessel with simple sailing equipment, this is the best solution – this way the designers avoided creating too much space between not too powerful winches and a steering wheel.

All lines, sheets and halyards are brought to the control post, which are controlled by 3 winches, one of which, for halyards, is electric. But this is on our particular version. If you would like to electrify all sail handling, no problem - just message our experts and we will provide the appropriate options.

Oh! Here is the update. Apparently, the developers listened to the reproaches about the not very reliable throttle control knobs and replaced them.

The control panel has several small screens that display information from various devices. Here you can also place a radiotelephone. A very convenient and informative console, where everything is properly provided and is at the skipper's hand, including a box for placing lines.

Just above and to the left of the steering wheel is a chartplotter . Not everyone was satisfied with such a small screen. Disappointed, they hinted that in the cabin ... Yeah, we see it in the cabin, this huge display of the second chartplotter. So how? Can we see it from the cockpit?

From Cockpit to Saloon

If we continue the analogy with a cozy and comfortable house, the porch of which is the transoms, and the hall is the cockpit, then the Isla 40 saloon is undoubtedly a loft-style living room. In this huge space, there was enough space for a relaxation area, and for a dining area, and for a galley, and for a chart table...

Hey, where is it? The navigation table was removed from the cabin? Removed from the usual place. Now a chartplotter with a large display, a radio station and other navigational instruments, a charttop table are located on the starboard side of the saloon... above the refrigerator.

And in fact, this is an excellent solution - the screen of the chartplotter, as we have seen, is visible from the cockpit, from the central and side sofas of the saloon. Even when resting or having lunch, the skipper can control the situation.

Although it is difficult to imagine how one can work in such an environment - it relaxes and sets one to rest. Take at least the refrigerator, which is located under the so-transformed chart table. Imagine how many delicious things will fit in its 120-liter inside, consisting of two retractable sections.

Opposite the refrigerator is a galley. The food waste compartment is located to the left of the sink with double sinks of different sizes. A very thoughtful solution in terms of saving water. This is also facilitated by both fresh and sea water supply available for use. The surface of the sink is made of artificial stone.

To the right of the sink is the oven and stove. If you are interested in possible options, please contact our marketplace consultants - they will offer you different options for ovens and hobs.

Behind the stove we found another innovation - two drawers, one of which is equipped with a bottle holder.

Cabinets under the worktop are very spacious, here you can not only store kitchen utensils, but also build in additional equipment, such as a dishwasher.

The bedside table in the cabin also suited us, because there are often not enough places where you can store some necessary things. And you can build in an additional small refrigerator of 65 liters here. The owner of the boat decides how to use this bedside table.

The tabletop of the bedside table is designed for working with documents and maps, if someone still prefers paper maps. For the convenience of working next to the bedside table there is a couch - the corner part of the sofa in the bow of the cabin.

The sofa itself consists of many soft backs, pillows, poufs, mattresses. There are also lockers located under the seats. The U-shaped sofa goes around the dining/coffee table and on request can be transformed into an extra bed.

One of us drew attention to the recesses in the panel in front of the central windows, and then together we found out that now this part is not made of veneer, but is replaced with high-quality plastic. We positively assessed this innovation. Now the panel will not deform after water splashes get on it through the open front windows. And the recesses of different shapes allow you to place different things in them so that they do not roll down during movement.

A skylight in the salon roof provides excellent natural light and allows the skipper to watch the sails directly from the sofa.

Excellent large windows add light and complement the impression of the living room of a large cozy house on the water. At the same time, you feel like you are in the middle of the ocean thanks to the panoramic view, you have sails above your head, delicious food is on the table, and family or friends are nearby. Feels great!

And as a small but bright sign of the warm hearth - carefully rounded corners on all the furniture.

But sometimes you just want to be alone. And for this, too, there are all the possibilities. You just have to choose...

Maestro or Quatuor

It has nothing to do with a conductor or a quartet, or with music in general. This is how the designers named the options for cabin packages on the Isla 40. There are four options in total - two Maestro and two Quatuor. See the layouts below for details, but for now we will go down to the owner's cabin.

By the way, the option we are on is Maestro with three cabins and three bathrooms. Let's immediately anticipate the question: yes, in both versions of the Maestro, the entire right float is given to the owner as his cabin. And both of these options are ideal for a comfortable cruise with family or friends.

Quatuor cabins are more suitable for charters. Although, we were able to comfortably accommodate the entire team of 8 people on the Maestro thanks to that transformer table in the saloon.

Here from the cabin, we go down to the owner's cabin. Our “owner”, who is also the skipper, who is also the captain of the topRik team, likes literally everything here. Especially the spaciousness of this private space, a lot of light and room to store clothes, shoes, books and other things necessary for personal comfort on a long voyage. A huge and very comfortable island bed can be approached from three sides and promises a restful, healing sleep after a work shift.

Portholes at the headboard, to the right and over the bed provide perfect natural light. A large drawer under the bed is designed to store bed linen, blankets and other accessories.

At the exit from the "bedroom" there is a table that can become a study desk or a dressing room if equipped with mirrors. Above the table are shelves for books, documents or accessories. Electricity is supplied here - you can connect a lighting fixture if needed. This section has a large tall wardrobe.

On the left side there is also a large number of cabinets and lockers. In a full-fledged large double wardrobe, you can hang outerwear, suits, evening dresses without folding them, put linen, shorts and T-shirts on the shelves. Plenty of room for empty or full bags and suitcases. You can take any number of things with you to feel at home as if you are on the longest cruise with a full entertainment program.

To the right is a separate, uncombined latrine. At the request of the buyer, a manual toilet can be replaced with an electric one - for this you just need to contact our consultants.

In the well-equipped spacious bathroom, the largest, two-meter-tall member of topRik team feels at ease. He does not have to try to take up as little space as possible in order to wash over the sink in a big way or take a shower, straightening up to his full height and freely wielding a washcloth.

It seemed to us that there were not enough shelves in the shower, even though the place allows for that.

And now let's see where and in what conditions other Isla 40 passengers will be accommodated in the Maestro layout version equipped with 3 cabins and 3 bathrooms.

The aft cabin has not undergone noticeable changes. Double island bed with upholstered headboard, hatches at the headboard, on top and to the right. There is much less space for storing clothes and other things than in the owner's cabin.

The bow cabin has grown compared the same layout in the Lucia 40. Now it has a wide double bed instead of the narrow berth that its predecessor had.

In our version, each of the two cabins has a private bathroom. Of course, this reduces the space for each of them. But here you have to choose - either privacy, or freedom of movement, which is present in the combined bathroom. The latter option is provided in the Maestro configuration for 3 cabins and 2 bathrooms.

Let’s return to the deck.

A couple steps from the cockpit lounger is a hatch to the engine compartment. Looking around, we decided that the designers here decided to do without changes. Understandable, since the compartment is still spacious, access to the engines is excellent from several sides. And if any of our future customers are not satisfied with Volvo Penta D1-30 which are standard, we can always offer the Isla 40 with Yanmars installed.

But on the foredeck, the change immediately catches the eye - the reverse post, which improves the overall appearance of the catamaran, lengthening it and adding not only to the external design, but also speed wise.

A bowsprit can be ordered as an option if you plan to use a gennaker. The same applies to the bow trampoline and mats for creating a sunbathing area. Under the mats there is a hatch leading to a huge locker.

On the Roof

What wide and reliable steps lead to the cabin roof - no need to turn your foot or balance on your toes to climb, even for the tallest of us. And the access to sailing equipment (boom and lazy-back) is easy for people of any height.

If you unfold the lazy-back, you will free a 60 m² Ensidans mainsail. Together with a genoa of 36 m², this is enough to reach a sailing speed of up to 8 knots, which we have confirmed in practice.

On the roof there is a place for solar panels, the number and power of which are determined by the buyer.

Advantages Of Isla 40

By tradition, before talking about the advantages of Isla 40, we note the shortcomings we have identified. We mentioned some of the shortcomings during testing - they were minor and did not affect safety, seaworthiness or reduce the comfort level of the vessel.

Separately, we highlight the unfortunate location of the electrical panel. In our case, it was on the bulkhead, past which you have to go down to the cabins on the port side. Even our sailor, accustomed to the sea waves, almost leaned against it. And an unprepared passenger may not be able to fight the swaying and accidentally shut down some of the hardware on the catamaran.

As for the benefits, they will have to be numbered, since there is a lot of them.

  • First will be the comfort of life on board and control of the boat. Although earlier we primarily talked about safety and quality, here the designers, creating comfortable conditions for the crew and passengers, did not sacrifice one iota for either safety, quality or seaworthiness of the boat. Passenger comfort is comparable to that of a much larger yacht.
  • Fiberglass sandwiches with a balsa core for infused hulls that exclude osmosis; molded vacuum lamination of the wheelhouse and deck surface; four buoyancy zones - just this is enough to confidently talk about the safety of the Isla 40. But you can still list the characteristics of carefully selected equipment, ranging from sailing equipment to capacious water tanks.
  • If we add the selection of equipment from leading manufacturers, stainless steel handrails, natural wood veneer, natural textiles to the safety components listed above, we will get a complete picture of the high quality of life and work on board.
  • Ample choice is provided to future owners of the Isla 40 due to the multiple layouts of the living space in both floats.
  • And from the previous point right the next: multifunctionality. Because you can buy a sailing Isla 40 catamaran for family trips, sailing with friends or use it for charters.

Test . Isla 40. To chance upon an island…

Testing group invited by Fountaine Pajot, immediately noted that the helmsman is managing the vessel easily thanks three winches and three clutch blocks. The successful compromise between comfort and seaworthiness of the cat was highly appreciated. Other than that, the testers noted that the safety of navigation is ensured by the method of manufacturing the hulls, lamination the top of the roof and deck, electrics installation practices, as well as the presence of 4 buoyancy zones.

Katherine Stone

Katherine Stone and three yachtsmen were testing the catamaran in Toronto.

Cat tested by Katherine Stone was equipped with powerful Volvo engines Penta 30 HP. With a wind of 20-25 knots and rough seas, the boat was moving at a speed of 7-8 knots upwind and with a double reef on the mainsail. With such a wind, the team easily managed to tack and gybe, which was facilitated by the optimal equipment of the control post.

Mark Pillsbury

Mark likened Isla 40 to a home, comparing the area of the cat - 850 ft² (259 m²) - to the area of some city apartments. He explained one of the reasons for the popularity of catamarans these days in his joking manner: the steak may slide a little when the cat turns sharply, but the drinks will not tip over.

Mark also commented on the good sailing characteristics, the ease of handling the boat even when alone, and the ability to use it for family cruising and charters.

Comparing Catamarans around 40′

What i wish.

I wish we had a different way to compare boats than by length. A 40′ cat has nothing to do with a 40′ monohull, volume-wise. A 42′ cat doesn’t, necessarily, have more volume than a 40′ cat. Volume comes from a number of factors. In a Cat, it’s a combination of the actual, individual hull beam (not necessarily overall beam), and how space is used. Much more on this below. At the end, see the chart that compares monohulls and cats and relates cost based on overall length vs volume. I did come up with a rough volume calculation formula which is what these graphs are based on. See the summary note which talks about why there’s not usable volume greater than in a 40′.

So, what do we know? Observations concerning the Lagoon compared to the Lucia 40 (F40) and Helia 44 (F44)

The boats just about need to be compared together. See the discussion of the specs, below.

Let’s start with indisputable facts. Information from the manufacturer’s web site and then observations that you can accept or see for yourself. All of this with a little grain of experience thrown in based on sailing these boats, but also on what our customers say…

So, what do the specs tell us?

  • The Lucia 40 is inter-coastal friendly with a mast height of the water of under 65′. (65″ is the bridge clearance for the lowest bridge on the Inter-Coastal waterway.) The Lagoon and Helia is not. See our interesting blog on this subject here. A touchy matter…
  • The Fountaine Pajot’s have a shallower draft opening up some of the popular, shoal cruising areas–like the Bahamas, Keys, etc.
  • The Lagoon is heavy with less sail area. So look at the SA/Ton (This is like the Sail Horsepower). Much better for the Fountaine Pajot , as has generally been the case. Older designs in the past have had this excessive beam and it adds unnecessary weight and not, necessarily, to the volume in the boat. It’s the actual beam of the hull itself that determines the volume and you can see from the accommodations, that the Lucia 4o has about the same or better living volume as the Lagoon.
  • Consistent with (2) the engine has to be bigger to accommodate this extra weight.

The other factor, a bit unknown for the Lagoon 42, is the load-carrying ability of the boats. The load-carrying ability is based on the designer’s calculation, but it only makes sense that if the boat itself is heavier, all else being equal, you have less capacity to carry the loads carried by typical cruisers.

Load-carrying is one of the most important considerations for cruisers. An overloaded boat is less safe, and goes much slower, especially in lighter winds. Catamarans with relatively narrower individual hulls (and having two of them) pick up wetted surface much more quickly than monohulls so are much more affected by loads. (This is why the experts are always talking about keeping the boat light–for safety and performance reasons.)

Load Carrying

(I used the Lucia 40 in the example, right–but the weights of equipment, etc. are the same for most boats.)

Take the Fountaine Pajot 40 which has a generous load-carrying capacity of 6834#. Sounds good, but look how fast it gets used up.

Wow, the extra gets used up fast. Boats that are heavy and that are designed principally for charter fleets sailing in a 50-mile circle, don’t care. If you’re planning on serious cruising, this becomes much more important to you.

Now, just some observations and considerations

Both the Helia and Lucia 40 have the space for additional social space adjacent to the control cockpit, as well as room for an array of solar cells out from under the shade of the boom.

  • The cockpit of the 40 and 44 is larger with more and comfortable seating.  This is where you spend most of your time. We recently had 15 seated in the cockpit of the Lucia 40 at a recent champagne celebration… Everyone had a comfortable place to sit.
  • The Fountaine Pajot’s have room for the popular social area adjacent to the helm control station. They also both have forward lounge areas–much more social space than the Lagoon. (Helia 44 shown, left–Lucia also has an optional lounge for this space.)
  • Awkward access to the helm, and equally awkward to the deck–with no space for a sun lounge on the deck adjacent to the control station–a very popular place for socializing, especially when exploring new areas.
  • The Fountaine Pajot’s feature a large pass-through counter from the galley to cockpit facilitating entertaining–the Lagoon does not.
  • The Lagoon has a mast post in the middle of the accommodations. An already smaller sail plan with a high boom is already inefficient. A less vertical luff on the Jib is less efficient and a small main is also much less efficient with a substantial portion of the main lying in the turbulence of the mast. Moving the mast back to accommodate a self-tacking Jib is going in the wrong direction. Just not enough sail area. And why? A more traditional rig with an overlapping Genoa is proven to offer better performance. Want to tack? just hit the tack button on the remote autopilot control, and push the button on the electric sheet winch–No muss, no fuss. All taken together the Fountaine Pajot gets the nod for a huge performance advantage, better motion under sail, and an easier rig to handle in a variety of conditions.
  • Fountaine Pajot has a soft dodger that can be removed for storms (required by virtually all private management companies in the Caribbean). Lagoon has an un-removable, hardtop. This is very high with no ready access to the deck and forces the boom to be inordinately high. This makes if very difficult to tuck in the sail or untangle lines, and also results in a higher center of effort with more noticeable (and uncomfortable) motion.
  • The Lagoon has blunt, vertical windows. Many people comment on the lack of flowing lines.

INTERIOR CONSIDERATIONS

  • The main saloon has a wide-open layout with no mast pole intrusion. Transition into the cockpit with no step or tripping ledges. A huge pass-through from the main cabin to cockpit for serving.
  • Lagoon: Owner’s wing much-wasted space with couch. No separation of head/vanity, like with the FP 40 and 44, so one person at a time head compared to FP 40 and 44 which is zoned, (see illustration below) and the owner’s cabin has much more storage. Lagoon Appears very beamy at water-line as evidenced with no step at all to aft berth—The extra wetted surface from wide waterlines, less sail area/displacement ratio, and under-powered main (going totally against the trend) will make her an extremely under-performing boat-especially in more moderate conditions.

The Lagoon is a little neither here nor there. Without significantly more volume than the Lucia 40, and no-where near the volume of the Helia 44. At least a part of the explanation lies in the construction details for the Lagoon. The company generally constructs the furniture modularly and drops these furniture modules into the hull where they are tabbed in. This type of construction leaves wasted space between the furniture and the hull. Do the math. a 2″ gap on both sides of the hull, counting two hulls leaves approximately a lost volume calculation of .75′(space wasted) X40′ (length) X 6.5′(typical height)=195 sq ft. So the method of construction accounts for almost taking 2′ out of the length of the boat 95 Cu ft. or so out of each side! Of course, this is an in-exact calculation, but it gives the idea and you begin to see why the volume in the Lagoon is not significantly different, especially in the prioritized aft living areas (cockpit and primary sleeping cabins) as compared to the Lucia and nowhere near the volume of the Helia 44 .

The Lagoon 42 Appears to be all about marketing geared towards entry-level participants who are getting a total compromise with performance — for volume and accommodations that look good at boat shows or the dock but don’t work so well when actually sailing. The FP 40 seems to offer a better balance overall, as evidenced by over 50 orders in the first few months of its introduction.

Every boat is a compromise. The Fountaine Pajot responded to the most requested features. FP opted to devote more room to the aft end of the boat in order to have the largest possible cockpit, two Island Beds aft, and multiple lounging areas.

FP also opted to eliminate the couch in the owner’s wing to make more room for storage and other features. (A much-requested change.). There is increased privacy and storage for the owner’s wing incorporating the popular features of the Saba 50 (Now also incorporated in the new Helia 44 “Evolution” as well). This includes A separation of toilet space (in private compartment) with a well-separated vanity and enclosed shower which eliminates splash. Also, incorporated is a dedicated space for a washer-dryer forward (much requested) and, of course, the walk-around island bed. Both aft cabins offer exceptional light and ventilation. Many people at the Miami show commented on the superior fit and finish of the Fountaine Pajot compared to the Lagoon.

In overview, it would seem that the Fountaine Pajot is designed more for the way serious voyagers want to live, and is overall lighter, stronger and faster with the biggest cockpit in her class– compared to the competition in her class. She is proving to be a winner as evidenced by the full order book. While there are always compromises, hers seem to be in the right direction, offering what serious sailors are looking for as she offers many of the same advantages of her popular sister, the Helia 44–but at a very affordable price. She’s well worth a serious look.

Pricing and volume calculations

When you price out a monohull based on cost per foot, it’s much less. But when you compare cost per cubic ft, they’re surprisingly close, considering the catamaran has the extra cost and advantages of redundant systems (engines, rudders, etc.). One could do a similar comparison for the volume of one length of cat vs another. The volume in the individual hulls has much more to do with usable and storage volume than the overall length of the boat, or overall beam of the boat. Dismantlable and transportable

A dismantlable powercat can be transported on a simple flatbed trailer... as long as it is of reasonable length and light in weight. Naval architect Richard Woods was able to test the validity of the concept with his own Skoota 28: the Aegean 30 is a development of the Skoota 28, still for building in plywood/epoxy and dismantlable. The objective was to increase the beam - now close to that of a sailing catamaran - and the headroom while offering two additional berths in the hulls. The outboard motors make beaching easier and safer - no rudders and engine legs. Two 40 to 60 HP engines guarantee a cruising speed of 10-12 knots (16-20 knots top speed).

New Zealand-based naval architecture firm Dan Leech is offering a number of power multihulls from 25 to 60 feet (7.5 to 18 m) for amateur or professional construction. Among them, the L925 is the perfect choice for relaxed cruising for a couple. This model is built in ½” (12 mm) plywood - the panels can be digitally cut - with glass/epoxy reinforcements. Its limited beam will allow you access to a marina slip without any noticeable extra cost. On the other hand, the gain in habitability and stability is considerable compared to a single-hulled motorboat. This kind of construction is very accessible to an enlightened amateur (4,000 hours of work were counted for the first model) all the more so as having outboard motors for propulsion considerably simplifies the technical aspects. Despite its semi-displacement hulls, the L925 is capable of making more than 20 knots with two 90 hp engines.

This boat was designed to replace the outgoing Helia 44 and stands to be one of the most popular catamarans with Fountain Pajot having sold over 100 Elba 45 hulls long before even the first one emerged from production.

This French-built cat brings to the fore a well-thought-out, safe, and dependable features with 10% less drag, efficient motoring, top-notch performance, and high speeds. It's also designed with fixed stub keels and slightly aft-raked bows, which are all essential in enhancing windward performance; something that most catamarans struggle with.

To improve on safety, the keels of this amazing catamaran sailboat are glued into a particularly designed recess in the hulls. This is to ensure that there are no keel bolts that can rip out and put the boat in danger if the boat gets grounded or in the event of a collision. The rig is also ICW friendly and is a true representation of a standard catamaran setup.

Designed in South Africa by Simonis-Voogd, is probably the best design in the Leopard family of catamarans. Its two hulls are vacuum-bagged using balsa core to offer maximum firmness while ensuring that the weight is on the minimum. This is done by articulately regulating the level of resin in the layup. With such types of hull shapes, this catamaran sailboat is very fast and can consistently clock 12 knots of speed against the currents.

The boat is also designed with shallow keels as they're filled with closed-cell polyurethane foam that's of great importance in increasing buoyancy and preventing water ingress. It comes with a minimum bridge deck clearance of 30 inches, which is essential in mitigating bridge deck slap. The helm station is designed to offer excellent visibility over the coach roof without having to perch the helmsman high above the cockpit.

The galley is put down in the port hull so that it doesn't compromise the size of the galley and the saloon. Designed by Philipe Pouvreau in northern Brazil, the Dolphin Ocema 42 is a truly unique catamaran sailboat that goes against the conventional norm of catamarans. It is equipped with daggerboards, which are essential in enabling it to point higher on the wind while reducing the wetted surface when running or anchoring in shallow surfaces. This, however, requires a higher level of expertise in sailing. This is because lifting the daggerboards higher up will expose the rudders while the daggerboards can also interfere with the hulls in the event that the vessel runs aground.

But even with that, the Dolphin 42 balances incredible performance and cruising comfort in a very compact package; something that is not very easy in bluewater cruising. That's why it's designed using a foam core to make it lightweight by reducing weight wherever possible. This vessel will most likely never let you down if you want to circumnavigate the bluewater on a high-performance boat that is safe and comfortable.

So if you've been looking for a real sailing catamaran that doubles up as a very comfortable liveaboard sailboat , look no further than the Dolphin 42.

Regarded as the best built and most stylish cruising multihull, the Catana 50 is a very huge catamaran sailboat. Measuring about 50 feet long with a beam of about 26 feet, this is an amazing catamaran that will test your sailing skills as a single sailor or if you're planning to sail shorthanded.

This boat is designed with a rig that gives you the option of using either a screecher or a self-tending jib. This may seem complex since the sheets are led to winches near each wheel while all other controls lead to a centerline winch that's located in the cockpit. But even with that, this sailboat can be easily tacked once on the course.

This is a real performance-oriented catamaran with efficient hulls and rigs allowing for top speed. This vessel is also designed with a long waterline and a subtle underwater shape at the bow to help in increasing volume while minimizing wave drag. The stern platforms can help in stretching the waterline length while also providing easy access from a dock or a dinghy. The board trunks are also very strong and sturdy to protect the integrity of the hulls if a collision occurs.

In essence, this is a very modern catamaran that's designed to safely make long-distance passages with ease. It is subdued in terms of styling but this doesn't mean that it falls short as far as performance is concerned.

Atlantic 42

Designed in 1993, the A42 has cultivated a legion of fiercely loyal fans thanks to its efficiency and aesthetic. This is the smallest of the Atlantic cruising catamaran line and is hugely popular with sailors thanks to its ease of handling, ocean-going capabilities, and superb use of space. From the forward cockpit, pilothouse to the sleeping cabins, and brilliant galleys everything about this cat is a true classic.

Unlike most catamarans, the Atlantic 42 is designed with a waist-high cockpit that's located forward of the pilothouse just behind the mast. It brings forth a solid construction thanks to the large metal girder-like bearers that run across the bulkheads. This helps the vessel in having the utmost strength, better air circulation under the engine, and a high level of flexibility as far as the size of the engine and its positioning is concerned.

Initially, the boat's style and its outlook were considered conservative but it soon became clear that it is built of high-quality materials and to last. The internal construction of the boat is impressive, to say the least. The exterior looks very beautiful and perhaps much more beautiful than most boats today. Its large aft cabin accommodation is a top drawer while the space separating en suite heads and shower compartments are considered a bonus.

If you were to board the French-built Fountaine Pajot Bahia 46, you'll agree that the high-quality of workmanship, layout, and efficient use of space is quite exciting, to say the least. This cat remains very popular among sailors thanks to its easy handling features and incredible performance under the sails. Well, this may not come as a surprise to many of us given that the Fountain Pajot is known for building some of the most remarkable cruising catamarans out there that it can be quite overwhelming to narrow down to a single vessel, but the Bahia 46 simply stands out.

This vessel is designed with hulls that are broader than those of many other catamarans. It's also designed with centerboards and daggerboards that are meant to enhance its performance. These are essential in minimizing draft while ensuring reliability, generous bilge, and in helping to protect the rudders and propellers.

This boat is big enough to manage any type of serious offshore sailing. This is one of the best cruising catamarans for anyone looking for the right vessel for long-distance sailing. This vessel has a very more generous rig than most cruising catamarans, which is essential in enhancing its performance. The six-post Bimini is very strong and clean and can perfectly hold dinghies.

Thanks to its lightweight feature, this vessel can sail upwind at speeds of over 17 knots and pinch up to 30 degrees. Just for comparison, the Gunboat 62 can tack through 95 degrees and still outperform the best racing monohulls. Catamarans are quickly outstripping single-hull boats for long-distance journeys. They are more stable and comfortable , and some can travel more than 200 miles in a day. In today’s article, I have put together a complete (well almost) list of some of the best catamarans for circumnavigating the planet; the question is, which one is best for you?

The best catamarans for sailing around the world include:

These cats focus on speed, safety, and comfort for longer journeys. 

This article will show you the seventeen best catamarans for long journeys, and why they’re the best. You’ll also learn some great tips on what to look for in a Catamaran and how to save money by buying a used catamaran. Let this list be a jumping-off point for your future research!

The Best Catamarans for Sailing Around the World 

A catamaran is a double-hulled boat with a deck or cabin area in between (bluewater cat definition in this article ). The double hull design means that the boat rocks less, sits higher on the water, uses less fuel to sail, and can be sailed in shallower waters than a single-hulled boat without worrying about grounding. 

Catamarans come in a variety of sizes and can be sail-powered or motor-powered and range from single-person sailing boats to family-sized yachts. Every catamaran design is different, and the twin-hull shape offers many ways to customize the layout of a ship. 

Each boat on this list is a larger catamaran (+40ft, more on size here ), so if you’re going to sail around the world, you want lots of space for provisions and rest.

Of course, there are tons of technical specs for each of these boats, but I’m going to focus on the overall features of each of these catamarans, what makes them stand out, and why they would each be an excellent choice for a transatlantic journey. 

Antares 44i 

The Antares 44i is an excellent option for sailing around the world and was explicitly designed for long-distance cruising. It performs well in any weather conditions, can be sailed easily by two people, and you’ll be able to sail long distances and live in comfort. 

Although it can be easily sailed by a crew of two I believe that a true bluewater cat should be set up for single-handed sailing, more on that in another article .

This catamaran features a stateroom on each hull and a forward cabin with plenty of storage space. The living and entertainment features include a flatscreen tv and a high-end deck speaker system. 

With this model, Antares dedicates itself to high-quality boats with optimal rigging and engine configurations. 

Atlantic 42

Atlantic is no longer building this catamaran, but there are usually a few pre-owned boats on the market. You can also get it made custom if you love the design, but be prepared to spend more money on a custom boat (custom boat also gets custom problems ;)). 

The Atlantic 42 is slightly smaller than some of the other catamarans on this list but is a seaworthy vessel. 42 ft is what most sailors I interview ( in this article ) said was the smallest cat to safely cross big oceans. It is also a decent size to counter the risk of capsizing (more on that here ).

It has a forward cockpit and pilothouse, which gives the owner a better use of space and makes the boat easier to navigate. With single-handed capability, one person can sail it easily and let the rest of the crew relax. 

One of the best-praised aspects of the Atlantic 42 is its galley, more extensive than most 42-footers (12.8-meter) can offer. 

One of the few 50 footers (15.24 meters) that can be sailed by just one person (many would of course disagree on this).

The Catana 50 is a catamaran worthy of an overseas journey. Its size adds to its stability on the open waters and its ability to sail straight through the choppy ocean and windy conditions. 

The Catana is also incredibly spacious on the inside, with substantial cabins and showers. The biggest downside to the Catana 50 is its price, as it’s much more expensive than most of its competitors. 

Catana also holds up well against some of the fastest cruising cats out there, here’s a list of the fastest cruisers if you are interested in that.

However, if you can find a gently-used Catana 50, you can rest assured that this boat will last! 

The Dolphin 42 is unique because of the use of daggerboards instead of fixed keels. This upgrade means that the boat has some pretty decent upwind performance while at the same time being faster downwind.

Centerboards and daggerboards offer some interesting downsides compared to mini keels. This is an interesting discussion and I suggest you read another one of my articles if you want to deepen your knowledge a little.

These catamarans are some of the lightest on the market. Not many Dolphins were made, so they are relatively hard to find. However, if you want a small, lightweight boat capable of going great distances, the Dolphin 42 is an excellent choice. 

Fountaine Pajot Belize 43

The Fountaine Pajot Belize is another well-built cruising yacht. Its core is made of foam instead of balsa, which reduces the risk of structural damage due to a rotten core in case of water intrusion. 

The design of Belize offers many options for customizability, with large open spaces and a combined saloon, navigation, and dinette area. 

There are two styles of Belize catamarans for sleeping quarters. You can either purchase a boat with an entire primary suite on one hull or one with two cabins in each hull. The first option is great if you are sailing the world alone and not expecting many guests, as it increases the storage capacity. 

Understanding what factors to consider when getting a cat can be hard, there are just so many of them (such as the daggerboard discussion above), I have tried to compile some of the most important in this article .

The boat also has wraparound windows to increase the sense of space in the galley. 

Fountaine Pajot Lucia 40

Fountaine Pajot is one of the best sailboat manufacturers existing today, as their boats are well made and highly versatile. The Lucia 40 is no exception – it’s a smaller boat but has a lot of room for moving around and on-board living. 

The living area is remarkably spacious on this catamaran for its size. 

The galley and lounge easily accommodate 6+people. The Lucia 40 doesn’t disappoint when it comes to sailing either, as the narrow hulls slice through choppy waters with ease. 

Most catamarans today are built to withstand rough weather but that doesn’t matter as much if the crew isn’t up for the task, I firmly believe that the most important thing a boat should consist of, is knowledge. Therefore taking online courses ( two free here ) or reading books ( my favorites here ) is imperative.

Gemini 105M

Gemini’s boats have been on the market for years and are solidly built for cruising. This boat is one of the most popular ever made, I personally would consider something different for offshore cruising, but since it has such a good reputation, I felt I had to add it to the list.

The Gunboat 62 is a great catamaran and set the standards for the rest of the impressive Gunboat lineup. It’s sleek and spacious while being robust and capable of transatlantic journeys. You can easily travel the world in a Gunboat 62 with several people and not feel cramped. 

The yacht was made for speed and power and remains one of the fastest catamarans on the market, even rivaling the newer Gunboat models.  GABO

Although the earlier models of the Gunboat 62 weren’t designed for a lot of cargo, you can still find space for everything you need without compromise. 

Lagoon catamarans are known for their reliability and ease of use. If you are considering a catamaran for the first time and are unsure about the technicalities of sailing, a Lagoon boat is a great option. 

The Lagoon 380 is probably the smallest cruiser on this list, which makes it better suited for solo or couple sailing.  

When I go looking to buy something, whether it be a boat, campervan, or whatever, I create a checklist and classify all the things I want either by NEED or NICE to have.

I believe the Lagoon 380 to be sub-optimal for my NEEDS, even though it does check a lot of NICE boxes, there’s a step-by-step article on the NEED and NICE method here .

There are several cabin options available on the Lagoon 380, but if you’re sailing by yourself, you can settle for three cabins and a larger galley and living space. With a smaller cockpit and broader side decks, the Lagoon 380 packs a lot of practicality and ease of sailing into a more compact catamaran. 

If you like the idea of a Lagoon boat but want a little more space, the Lagoon 42 is the upgraded version of the Lagoon 380. With all of the same benefits, it comes with more space for cabins or storage, making it one of the best-selling Lagoons of all time. 

The Lagoon 42 is also a faster cruiser built for strength. While it’s not the fastest on the market, it works well in choppy waters and windy conditions, making it great for the beginning sailor to go on a more extended trip. 

Many people have completed an around-the-world sail with this ship.

Although there is a flybridge version, I would recommend the “open” version due to several factors, some including increased windage and a higher boom. More on flybridges pros and cons here .

For stability, safety, and durability, you can’t beat the Lagoon 42. 

The Leopard 45 performs better with less storage weight because of the relatively low bridge deck clearance. If the boat is fully loaded, you could experience some wave pounding. However, the cockpit is open and airy, with devices that block the sun and provide maximum comfort while sailing. 

The Leopard 45 is an incredibly beautiful boat,   and has a strong reputation for excellent build quality!

Leopard catamarans are one of my personal favorites, as such I have written an entire article about the brand, so if you want to understand its pros and cons then here is the link . Gabo

Designed in South Africa, it features a high rear arch for extra support and very smoothly connected decks. The galley is large and open, and most Leopards offer a four-cabin plan. If you are traveling with another person, this boat is an excellent option for you! 

The Manta 42 is another classic catamaran that you can buy used (at a decent price), as it is an incredibly seaworthy vessel. While still in production, the Manta was one of the most popular catamarans on the market. 

It is still in high demand amongst circumnavigators. Buying a used Manta 42 usually means that you inherit some of the previous owner’s boat upgrades! 

The Manta 42 also made it to my list of the 9 safest catamarans on the market ( link ).

This blue water cat can be sailed by one or two people, making it ideal for liveaboard couples or long-distance shorthanded sailing. The galley is in the saloon ( instead of in one of the hulls ), making the cabins below more spacious and better equipped. 

Overall, the Manta is well equipped for sailing around the world. 

Nautitech 44

Nautitech is an excellent brand of the catamaran, with several different designs per boat. The Nautitech 44 has a unique feature, you can have it with two options for steering: twin wheels or a single wheel.

The Nautitech 44 also features a cockpit on the same level as the saloon. The door between the two is more convenient than a hatch and dramatically reduces the risk of water damage during rain pour. 

This is also the same boat that aeroyacht president Gregor owns, he has offered some great insights into Nautitech in the book Catamarans (amazon link )

Outremer 45

Outremer is famous for being one of the fastest brands of catamarans on the market. If you need speed, the Outremer 45 might be the perfect choice for you. It has a top speed of 16 knots, which is higher than almost every other catamaran of its class. 

While the Outremer 45 is known for speed, it doesn’t compromise on the quality of living. 

You can settle into life on this boat with complete peace of mind. Even as a beginning sailor, the steering is simple and easy to use, and the autopilot is top of the line, so you’ll be able to sail across the ocean in an Outremer without issue. 

Privilege Serie 5

A French-designed catamaran, the Privilege Serie 5 is one of the most comfortable 50-foot (15 m) yachts available. The unique cabin layout includes the master cabin in the boat’s center instead of in one of the hulls. 

The Privilege Serie 5 is also incredibly easy to sail, despite its larger size. 

The sails and controls lead to the helm, where the raised deck makes it easy to see all around the deck. If you want to cross the ocean with a full crew then the Privilege Serie 5 might be perfect for you! 

Seawind 1000

The Seawind 1000 is the smallest boat on this list, measuring 33 feet (10 meters) long altogether. However, this doesn’t mean that it’s not livable. If you are sailing on your own or with a partner, there is more than enough space to live in the Seawind 1000, which includes the option of a centered cabin or two hull cabins. 

Because it’s small, the Seawind 1000 is easy to handle. The mast and sails are all manufactured for extra stability and ease of use. 

Overall, the Seawind 1000 is an excellent example of a simple, safe, and seaworthy catamaran. 

Note: since this is a small catamaran it will also be more sensitive to heavy weather so trip-planning becomes even more important.

The Voyage 44 is one of the oldest cats on this list, having had its hay-day in the mid-1990s. However, this also means that a used Voyage 44 will be cheaper than a newer boat. If you can find a Voyage with previous responsible owners, you will inherit any upgrades and fixes that they’ve made on top of a very seaworthy boat. 

The Voyage 44 has more storage and space than most cruisers of its size and is known for behaving very well in choppy waters. 

This catamaran does its job well while providing adequate space for cooking, sleeping, and living aboard. 

What To Look For in a Long-Distance Cruising Catamaran

If you are planning to sail around the world, you need to be very careful about which kind of catamaran you decide to use. Many of the things you want in a boat really comes down to personal preference, so be sure you know what design preferences you want before you start shopping! 

Size and Payload

The most important thing to consider when buying a catamaran is how much space and cargo you need because the larger the boats are, the bigger the payload it can handle. Decide how long you want the ship to be and how much you’re taking with you. 

It’s vital not to overload a catamaran, this will reduce performance and increase risk of unwanted behavior in heavy seas.

Cabin Placement  

Most catamarans have options for a “Maestro” cabin placement, where one entire hull is the master suite, and the other cabins are located on the opposite hull.

Cockpit and Protection From The Weather

Is the cockpit on the boat you’re looking at covered or open? This can make a difference on the high seas, especially during rainy weather. 

The size of the ship also can affect how many people you need as a crew. If you’re traveling by yourself or with one other person, you don’t want to buy a boat that needs a larger crew. 

Buying Used? 

If you don’t want to spend the money on a brand new catamaran, I don’t blame you. Several of the ships on this list are out of production and can only be found used. However, for circumnavigation, you do want a boat of high quality to keep you safe and dry until you make it to your destination.  

When buying a suitably used catamaran, it’s essential to look at the refit history of the boat more than the year it was made. Catamarans are sturdy, and the general design has been the same for at least the past decade. 

If you find a newer, larger, cheaper boat, you should look into its history. 

Your best bet to save money while buying a catamaran will be to buy an older, probably smaller boat with an excellent refit history and no serious issues. It will still be an investment, and a sturdy used catamaran will serve you well. 

Final Thoughts

No matter which catamaran you decide to buy for your journey, you’ll be able to sail safely and comfortably. Catamarans are great yachts for long-distance sailing, and the ships on this list are the best of the best. These brands are time-tested and ready to accompany you on an adventure around the world!

Spanning 115 feet, the newest composite multihull is fitted with Sunreef’s custom-engineered batteries and state-of-the-art electric engines. Solar panels will also be embedded into the hull sides, superstructure, and bimini, allowing the cat to generate power from the sun. Sunreef didn’t share any details regarding speed or range for the new 35M Eco, but the aforementioned 80-foot cat is powered by 360 kW electric motors that can push it to 10 knots. The newcomer theoretically has an “infinite range,” given it can continuously get power from the sun so long as it’s shining. The clean, emissions-free energy would also power the hotel load at anchor.

The 35M Eco is not only sustainable but also spacious and stylish. With a beam of 48 feet, the yacht offers expansive living areas onboard. Positioned in the bow of the main deck, the owner’s stateroom provides stunning panoramic views and private access to an outdoor terrace. The 35M Eco offers an abundance of alfresco lounging areas, too. The vast walkaround aft deck, which Sunreef calls the “ocean lounge,” gives seafarers easy access to the sea and a hidden garage stocked with water toys. In addition, the sprawling flybridge features a plunge pool and bar.

The best downwind sails: Options explained by over 200 experienced sailors

Which downwind sails are the right choice for you? and how do you take the stress out of sail handling on a tradewind passage? Toby Hodges quizzed more than 240 skippers in last year’s ARC to find out

Downwind sailing is any cruising sailor’s dream. The thought of days, or even weeks, of reliable following tradewind pushing you across an ocean with just a warm apparent breeze over the deck seems particularly far-fetched for those of us who have just suffered the wettest winter imaginable.

We all need a reliable downwind setup, whether coastal cruising or passagemaking. But those planning an Atlantic crossing or Pacific crossing will want to give this aspect particular attention, perhaps adding some tweaks or sail wardrobe investments to help ensure that dream adventure is as comfortable as possible for your crew and your yacht.

While there’s certainly no one-fits-all answer, we can learn a lot from those who have done a crossing. Last year we used our annual ARC Gear Survey to focus on the topic of downwind sails and handling and have since analysed the responses to our detailed questionnaire, from over 240 skippers on the ARC and ARC+ rallies.

The reason why there’s no optimum solution for all is multifaceted. Sure, the shape of your hull and keel type can help narrow down options. Unless you have a sportier design, then sailing the downwind rhumbline should equate to least stress and gybes and therefore potential problems. Those with newer hull shapes may want to calculate their polars and work with sailmakers to evaluate which angles and sails best suit their hulls.

How about your rig – is it easy to use a pole? Is there a track to fit one… or two even? Can you square the boom or do you have swept-back spreaders? Do you sail short-handed or with plenty of crew to help pull strings and get poles down? The answers can lead to yet more considerations, including chafe points, how to avoid rolling, and how to easily depower or reef.

Does your mainsail help and does it fill the slot better when reefed? What’s your best setup for short-handed or at night? What are your backup systems (notably for torn sails or a broken halyard or pole)?

A lot can be answered in advance by considering such questions. The weather, however, cannot. We can only hope for reliable trades and the sort of downwind crossing conditions last year’s ARC crews gratefully experienced.

Weighing the options

Spinnakers can be ideal if you have the experience and crew to handle them, their numerous associated lines, and can get them down easily. Asymmetric spinnakers or gennakers can make this handling much easier, as they don’t require a pole. They were carried by over 40% of the fleet last year, making these the most popular offwind option in terms of numbers carried (an indication of a modern fleet), but they don’t suit true downwind sailing, meaning extra miles to sail.

Aero-style vented spinnakers, aka parasailers, can seem like the holy grail for many on a downwind crossing as they can be set from the bow or in front of the boat and are capable of reaching and running. However, these are among the costliest sail options/upgrades and there’s a range of different brands now which all claim the optimum design.

That said, perhaps the clearest message from 2023’s ARC skippers was the real love of – or wish for – a parasailer. Over 40 yachts carried one, yet so many more commented that they would have wanted one. This is perhaps a reflection of last year’s consistent tradewind conditions – “The parasailer was perfect for the conditions we had” said the skipper of German Catana 47 Aquila .

Other downwind sail setups include twin headsails, or the specialist Bluewater Runners and TradeWinds, versatile sails which share a single luff.

However, a poled-out genoa, where the headsail is typically flown wing-on-wing/goosewinged with the mainsail, is still considered the most reliable method for downwinding.

Carrying a range of options is ideal, but remember you also need the space to stow them!

Pole-out – belt and braces

Around 60 yachts used a poled-out headsail, with over 40 of these skippers still rating it the most reliable method. It uses your heavier-grade white sails, the mainsail can be securely prevented, and both can be easily reefed.

Asante , a 2007-built Oyster 56, has a gennaker aboard but found: “Best setup when windy is two reefs in main, poled-out headsail – easy solution and fast going at 8-10 knots (we covered 205 miles in 24 hours)”. Serenity , a French HR40, said it “allows for a good wind angle in tradewinds and is easy to reef single-handedly if needed”, while German Bavaria 51 Mola adds this setup is “extremely resistant to squalls”.

A poled-out genoa worked best aboard the Moody 54 Dilema , albeit making for a ‘rolly’ experience: “Simple and effective. We used centred staysail as well to reduce roll.” UK-flagged Rustler 42 Carrik also remarked on the rolling but was otherwise in praise: “sailing goosewinged spared us the drama of the spinnaker when winds were 20-plus knots (which was most of the time) and allowed us to sail the rhumbline”.

The Swedish-flagged Hallberg-Rassy 48 MkII Sally was sailed double-handed so kept it straightforward with main and poled-out headsail, sailing wing-on-wing for two weeks. “Our simple sail approach worked well for us, fast enough and easy.”

Also sailing double-handed was Fisk , a 2007 Oyster 46: “Our poled-out genoa (130%) proved to be a very useful all-round tool, goosewinging with the main when feasible.” They bought these sails new before the ARC but think a light wind sail could have been useful too.

Jeanneau Sunshine 38 Cloud Jumper points out that “goosewinging is less weight on the bow than twin headsails.” They sailed like this for 22 days. And 20-year-old Oyster 53 Jarina had another reason for the ease of this setup: “a foredeck crew with the combined age of 200! Poled-out headsail plus main and preventer equals ease of handling. Stable and controllable.”

Experimenting and enjoying the process should be encouraged. Ipanema developed a motto by doing this: “poled-out genoa if wind greater than 18 knots; gennaker if wind less than 20 knots”. Bestevaer 53ST Aegle thinks having a good solution for various apparent wind angles is key: “goosewing is very effective; a furling spinnaker makes life much easier”.

Twins – twice as good?

Some bluewater yachts install their own systems as standard, including a pole or twin poles, knowing twin headsails are ideal for tradewind cruising. The Barters on their 20-year old Super Maramu Nunky hail the Amel twin headsail system as “superb: great downwind and they can be furled together in a moment”. Equally, Oyster 54 Ostara says: “the Dolphin twin headsails performed very well – very versatile and fast passagemaking in tradewinds”.

Other skippers might choose to fit or retrofit two forestays or twin luff grooves. “Twin headsails on the same furler worked really well,” is the verdict from Rival 36 Topaz Rival. They sailed like this for 17 days, including at night, so it didn’t affect their watch pattern.

Norwegian Sun Odyssey 44 Moyfrid used genoa and jib poled-out for 15 days, as it’s “easy to adjust, gave us flexibility and safety of handling quickly in squalls”. The same reasoning was given by Discovery 58 Aqualuna, who found twin headsails excellent for double-handing. “It meant we could do three hours on, three hours off”. The summary from Oyster 53 Distraction : “Twin headsails is easy but not fast, asymmetric is fast but not easy.”

The Blackadders’ Grand Soleil 46 Flying has twin headsails, a gennaker and a Code 0, “and trapped the edge of the tradewinds to use them all”. They found “our twin headsails/twin poles worked a dream – easy to fly single-handed and not too rolly.” They also found them easy to adjust and reef, and adaptable to different conditions including winds up to 35° off the quarter.

Spinnakers – Going deep

Anyone in a hurry, racing or wanting some sport for an active crew would probably choose a spinnaker (or several, space and budget willing). While capable of harnessing those tradewinds most efficiently, a big free-flying sail can be tricky to gybe and get back on deck. A popular ARC solution is to fly a spinnaker during the day and poled-out headsail at night as the latter is easier to manage/reef without affecting the watch system.

Oyster 406 Penny Oyster : “We used the spinnaker during the day (weather permitting) which increased speed and was less rolly. Poled-out jib overnight felt very stable and safe. Easy to manage solo.” It was the same for Grand Soleil 50 Sidney II and 20-year old Sweden Yachts 42 Freedom , the latter promoting: “full main and spinnaker when 15 knots or less (sailed on a dead run for 90% of trip); main and genoa goosewinged if 15 knots or more”.

Symmetrical kites (and parasailers) are often a popular choice for catamarans as they can be set off each bow. Sailing double-handed on their Aussie flagged Outremer 51 Spirit , the McMasters bought a symmetric kite for the crossing to supplement their gennaker, flew it with the mainsail and considered it “easy gybing and conservative for double-handing”. Fellow Outremer Madeleine (a 45) carried Code, A-sails and a symmetric spinnaker and found a “half-reefed main and spinnaker stable and easy”.

Asymmetric/Gennaker – working the angles

Despite gennakers being the most popular offwind sail option carried (90 yachts), only around 20 skippers found this to be their most successful sailplan for the crossing, with many frustrated by not having a kite with enough belly to sail the deep downwind angles experienced last year. (While deeper cut asymmetrics are available, many, especially furling types, have a flatter shape and suit reaching more). Grand Soleil 46LC Mandalay reckons their inability to sail deep cost them two days.

Grand Soleil 50 Mr Twister found that flying their gennaker with a double reefed main “allowed for a more downwind course”. This was backed up by the Peckhams on their Hanse 455 Infinity of Yar : “Two reefs in the main allows wind over the top of mainsail so 165-170º TWA is possible”. At night they resorted to the boat’s standard white sails but as this involves a self-tacking jib, they’d want to fit a poled-out genoa or yankee if doing it again.

Handling an A-sail and whether to use a furler or snuffer, also needs due consideration. Najad 490 Adastrina cautions that a “top-down furler with its torsion rope is difficult to stow due to bulk”, while Oyster 47 Aequitas also warns: “Don’t sail too deep as the snuffer jams.”

Code 0s have transformed cruising for many production yachts, particularly those which typically day sail in light winds and want an easily furled fetching or reaching option. However, they are not deemed so useful for tradewind passages as they lack the deeper shape for downwind conditions. “Code 0 was excellent, but could not run deeper than 155°,” confirms new Canadian-flagged X46 Imi Makani .

An exception was perhaps the Oyster 745 Mexican Wave : “We loved both our Elvstrom Code 0, which we flew 10 days and nights, and our Bluewater Runner which was great in light wind. Both on hydraulic furlers – easy.”

Specialist sails – Bluewater Runner & TradeWinds

Elvstrom’s Bluewater Runner (BWR) and North Sails’ TradeWind (TW) were purposefully designed for downwind events such as the ARC. They take some of the twin headsail concept, but use lighter fabric and modern furling technology for a versatile multi-use sail.

The twin headsails are joined at the luff and can be flown together on the leeward side to act as a light wind genoa/Code sail equivalent, or peeled apart when running to be flown wing-on-wing, independent of the fixed forestay and headsail. And in principle, they can be easily furled from the cockpit.

Hallberg Rassy 40 Northern Light purchased a BWR for the crossing, used it for 16 days during daylight hours, and found it “very effective when running dead downwind.” The Hanse 505 Mojito agrees: “Worked really well, easy to handle, and doubles up as a Code 0. It gave the best downwind performance and can be managed from the cockpit.” That said, they consider their BWR “too powerful for the rig even in 20 knots of wind – we snapped one halyard and broke the bobstay and bowsprit padeye.”

HR57 Saltair advises it needs lots of halyard tension, while Lagoon 410 Newbee agrees that less than 20 knots wind suits the BWR – they resorted to a triple-reefed main and genoa when things got livelier.

North Sails’ latest offerings are popular on modern luxury cruisers. Rock Lobster IV is a new Oyster 565 with a wardrobe of North Sails including a TradeWind and a Helix structural luff gennaker. “Helix is very easy (little point using the G2); TradeWind is great in moderate wind, and poled-out yankee gives good flexibility”. They wisely “adapted sails to crew ability”.

Fellow Oyster Ri-Ra , a 675, also with a new North suit, had “lots of difficulties with TradeWind sails,” however, and blamed a poor setup and “inadequate halyard casting”. Meanwhile Mastegot, a new Oyster 595, found their poled-out jib and main more successful than the TW, and if doing again they’d instead consider twin headsails, “because they can be reefed”.

But there were words of praise from Amel 60 Mrs G who found their TradeWind most reliable with a reefed main, and the Swedish Passad 38 Lulu : “very good lift and speed, much better than wing-on-wing”.

Parasailers – the vented kite

For want of a generic term ‘parasailers’ are specialist cruising spinnakers with a pressure relief valve. This vented part diffuses gusts while the paraglider-style wing creates lift and provides support to the sail (they don’t require a pole, but can be used with one).

It’s a forgiving, versatile option that can be used for running and reaching, but it’s an expensive investment and one that pays to learn how to handle properly. They work well without needing a mainsail set and are increasingly popular with multihull owners.

Lagoon 450F Marlove was one of 44 parasailer users last ARC, flying theirs for 13 days and nights: “made our life easy, perfect sail to cross the Atlantic”. Another Lagoon, Rockhopper of London , agreed, calling it a ‘hoist and forget’ sail: “no trimming – the sail coped well with wind shifts”. And Ovni 385 Contigo reports: “Parasail is amazing up to 20 knots and easy to snuff if the wind got too high.”

The Harpers on their two-year-old Jeanneau Yachts 51 Blue Pepper spent a season using their parasailer to prepare: “We practiced all the configurations we used several times as a crew before we got to the Canaries – it paid off. The Parasailor was excellent, stable, including in gusts, and very easy to manage. Twin headsails also worked well and were surprisingly powerful, but Parasailor is faster, easier, with less wear and tear on running rigging.”

Those with parasailers seemed happier to keep them up at night. The skipper of Lagoon Cosi mentioned how he would sleep in the cockpit for this. However, several others added caution about getting a parasailer down – the wing element can makes snuffing tricky, confirmed by the double-handed crew on Broadblue Rapier 550 Blue Wonder . Hence others promote snuffing parasailers early, including Galatea Of Aune , who tore theirs in a squall.

Of the 44 international skippers who shipped parasailers it’s hard to know exactly which types they had as many just list them as ‘parasailer’, but there were clearly some staunch supporters of both Oxley and Wingaker types. “Oxley is amazing! Very stable, very flexible in terms of wind strengths (gusts and wind direction),” reckon the Dutch crew on their Garcia Exploration 60 Fiore .

The Swiss crew on Moody 54DS Nautilia were equally impressed: “We used it up to gusts until about 24 knots – gives calm downwind sailing with good speed.” The Bösch’s on Jeanneau 51 Wolkenschlosschen said their Levante “worked really well,” using it 90% of the time, adding “take Oxley down below 20 knots TWS and use it in gennaker mode”.

Aussie-flagged Fountaine Pajot 40 Cat’s Pajamas flew their 130m2 Oxley for 16 days and, other than advising to get it down early for squalls, the only thing they’d change is to get a larger version.

Oxley offers the Levante (for up to 20 knots) and the flatter Bora with an inflatable double-layer wing for higher winds, seas and gust damping.

“The new Bora was excellent,” reports Oyster 55 Valent, although they still found it difficult to snuff once the wind was over 14 knots.

The main difference the Wingaker has over other parasailers is that it is a single construction including the vent and wing, which it claims produces a more stable performance and is easier to handle and crucially to snuff. The feedback for it was equally praiseworthy, particularly from catamaran owners.

The new Seawind 1600 cat Pure Joy thought it just that: “Wingaker very easy to handle and gybe as well as sail completely downwind.” The American crew on FP Aura 51 Darla J left a strong testament: “2,142 miles without taking the Wingaker down”. And the Kiwi FP Elba 45 Aratui simply stated: “Take a Wingaker” after flying theirs for 90% of the voyage including at night.

More multihull solutions

Multihulls offer great platforms for experimenting with downwind setups. While it’s easy to picture a cat flying along on a flat reach under screecher or A-sail, running downwind brings questions on how best to fill the slots in different wind strengths. Indeed the Canadians on their new Nautitech 44 Open June asked for “more detail on catamaran downwind strategy in the ARC’s downwind seminar”. They found “full main and gennaker faster than Oxley but poor below 150° TWA – Oxley backs wind behind main”. They wished for a better solution for between 18-24 knots wind.

Portuguese FP Tanna 47 Portlish found a good combination between gennaker (with furler) and parasailer. “Gennaker was used for 110°-160° AWA and also during the night, parasailer for 160°-180°.” However, they advised it’s not easy without a pole: “We would add a spinnaker pole to be able to use a poled-out genoa for downwind sailing in above 25 knots of wind.”

The 53ft bluewater catamaran Lost Abbey favoured goosewinging either their spinnaker, asymmetrical or screecher with the genoa, but still would have liked a parasailer. Norwegian RCC Majestic 530 Tempus seconded this: “If money were no object I’d buy a parasailer.” Instead, they mostly used “the asymmetric spinnaker on either bow plus one to two reefs in main”.

FP Lucia 40 Wanderlust used a Code 0 and asymmetric the most: “both behaved well downwind and sometimes we flew both side-by-side”. They caution: “big mainsails and booms are a pain downwind!” While the new Excess 15 Vida Loca adds: “as the rig required the mainsail to be flown with the gennaker, our sailing angles in decent wind were 160° AWA”.

Nautitech 46 Open Pinnacle found their most effective sailplan to be: “TradeWind with third reef, next asymmetric with third reef – downwind sails need less mainsail in the less wind,” they warn after they had problems with their snuffer twisting. The sail lashing at the head of the TradeWind also chafed through, tearing the sail as it came down. Which leads us to other sail handling problems…

Problems & repairs

Having your ideal sailplan is one thing, but what do you do when that breaks? The majority of ARC skippers experienced failures with sails and their handling, mostly with tears they needed to repair, and the overriding advice is to carry plenty of tape and patches, a sewing machine if possible, an extensive sewing kit if not.

“With a good sail repair kit a sail can always be repaired,” the crew on Penny Oyster advise. Grand Soleil 46LC Mandalay suffered a torn clew and luff in their headsail and a torn batten pocket in the main, but report all were “hand stitched or taped and held OK”. After the A-sail “ripped from leech to luff” on the new Oyster 595 JaZoFi, the crew stitched and taped the 12.5m tear, “but only had a 25m roll of 50mm tape”. Frustratingly, the repair only lasted an hour.

Chafe to sheets and halyards is the other biggest issue on long downwind passages. “We had chafing on pole ends caused by metal eyes on sheets,” Jeanneau Sunshine 38 Cloud Jumper warns. “We failed to use plastic balls to prevent damage until too late.”

There were also a large number of halyard failures last year, including two spinnaker halyards and the genoa halyard on the Alloy Yachts Irelanda alone.

Amel 60 Mrs G and Jeanneau Sun Odyssey 44 Moyfrid both snapped gennaker halyards: “the halyard fell down inside the mast – unable to retrieve it while underway,” Moyfrid bemoans. “Carry spare halyards to replace any that chafe or break,” is Hermione III’s advice.

Final thoughts

Having compiled this survey for over 15 years, it’s clear to see that ARC yachts are getting newer and larger and their owners are increasingly happy to spend that bit extra to get the best out of their yachts or find their ideal sailplan.

Today’s easily set and handled Code sails and asymmetrics offer a completely transformative experience during most of the test sails I do on these new boats. But for a tradewind passage I’d choose a specialist downwind sail, budget and space willing, and/or make sure I had a pole and headsail large enough to goosewing effectively.

Know your sails’ limits (in wind and waves) and what you would default to over certain strengths, remembering that tradewinds can be strong for days and nights at a time.

Then get comfortable with your downwind setup so all crew can safely manage and ideally reef it short-handed, identify chafe points in advance, and have a backup plan including spares and repairs.

Your dream crossing should be just that, so take the stress out in advance if you can – and enjoy the ride!
