Prestige Yachts M8 Review

How fitting it was that Prestige Yachts introduced its new M-Line flagship, the M8, at Portopiccolo, a picturesque yachting village outside Trieste, Italy. Formerly a quarry, the cliff-side area had been chiseled into a clean site rife with eye-catching vistas, much like the French builder’s 65-foot power catamaran and its nearly 3,000 square feet of usable real estate.

Take, for starters, the M8’s 344-square-foot cockpit. Apart from flybridge-bound stairs to port and a wet bar to starboard, this space (as well as most of the yacht’s living areas) is an open deck with modular furniture. This setup allows owners to choose how they spend their time, whether watching sunsets on the hook or relaxing underway. Aboard Hull No. 1, which will debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show this month, there were four movable square-shaped sofas and two accompanying side tables.

Aft-deck space is further enhanced by the M8’s versatile swim platform (14 feet, 5 inches by 4 feet, 11 inches) that Prestige describes as a “balcony on the sea.” When it wasn’t overlooking the smooth waters of the Adriatic Sea, the 1,102-pound-capacity platform lowered into swimming-pool mode at the push of a button, allowing access to the garage, dinghies and water toys.

The M8’s modular-furniture concept continues in the salon, where there is 6-foot-6-inch headroom, and on the flybridge. Between both spaces, the only fixed furniture is the 538-square-foot flybridge’s three-person sun pad to starboard, abaft the staircase leading to the salon. The flybridge also has a wet bar with a grill abaft a two-seat centerline helm station with two 22-inch multifunction displays. To port, there is a dining table with seating for eight; aft and to starboard, there is another lounging area with an L-shaped sofa to starboard and two-person aft-facing seating on centerline with room for two loose tables.

As for this hull’s 511-square-foot salon, it had two free-standing chairs to starboard, a sofa on centerline and another to port. The salon connects to the cockpit via an opening centerline window with a service bar that has a wine chiller for 18 bottles, a sink and stowage. Forward and to port, there is a dining area with a table for six, and the galley is to starboard (a galley-down layout is also an option). Appliances are by Miele, including a three-burner cooktop, a microwave and a dishwasher, and there is a 132-gallon, triple-door fridge/freezer by Fisher & Paykel. This M8 also has the optional Surround View system by Garmin to make maneuvering in tight spaces easier; its console is nestled between the galley and centerline stairs leading to the owner’s stateroom. Owners can also opt for a lower helm station with a pedestal seat for all-weather cruising.

The 323-square-foot foredeck lounge is where the M8 diverts from its free-standing-furniture style the most. A sun pad consumes nearly the entire width of this space. Down two steps and forward, there is forward-facing straight-line seating on centerline across from an aft-facing C-shaped settee.

Accommodations can include four or five staterooms, with options for a VIP suite that consumes the portside hull and the galley down in the starboard hull. The 323-square-foot master stateroom is forward and nearly spans the yacht’s 29-foot beam, with its athwartship berth across from a console with a rising TV. There’s also a head with his-and-hers sinks to port, and a customizable space to starboard for a gym, a lounge, a gaming area or whatever else the owner wants.

Power for the M8 is twin 600 hp Volvo Penta D8 diesels. With the throttle all the way to the pins, I observed a 20.5-knot top hop as the diesels burned a combined 63.4 gallons per hour at 2,900 rpm. At 7.7 knots, reported range is 1,583 nautical miles; at 17 knots, it’s reportedly 350 nm. Turning the M8 felt smooth, running like it was on rails, and the wheel was real-time responsive to input.

The Prestige Yachts M8 is worth a look for power cat enthusiasts seeking adaptability, customization and a notable master stateroom that’s akin to one inside a small apartment. This new flagship has plenty of potential to be a desirable home on the water.

Luxurious Furnishings

The M8’s furniture is provided by four brands: Reflex Angelo, Pininfarina, Roda and Foglizzo. Regardless of where I decided to lounge while on board, there was always a place to get comfortable and take in the views.

Access Anywhere

In addition to two stairways leading to the flybridge (one in the cockpit, one in the salon), the Prestige M8 has two side-deck doors. One is forward and to port, and the other is aft and to starboard. A portside day head is accessible from the side deck.

Sun-Powered Anchorage

Hull No. 2 of the M8, which debuted at the Cannes Yachting Festival last month, has the optional “Silent Mode” package: 10 lithium batteries powered by 258 square feet of solar panels, which should allow two hours of silent operation sans generators and with zero emissions.

Prestige Yachts was branded nearly 30 years ago but also has the roots and history that date back to 1957. It all began when Henri Jeanneau, who was mostly fond over airplanes and automobiles until he began admiring powerboats that used to pass by his windows. The interest he formed in powerboats instantly became a passion with an interest in competitive powerboat racing. He then decided he want to craft his first wooden hull in Les Herbiers, France. After Jeanneau won his first race, he then decided to dedicate his life to shipbuilding and started producing boats in series and established his own shipyard, Jeanneau Shipyard. The first Prestige Yacht was born in 1989 and the name she was given was “Prestige 41”. Jeanneau Yachts and powerboats became extremely popular among yachtsmen for their characteristics, sleek design and how easy they were to handle. Jeanneau didn’t want to stop and rely on past achievements, that’s when Prestige Yachts began. With help of the designs of J&J Design and Jeanneau’s design team, the shell of this yacht was the best they have seen to date. And let’s not forget about the inside! The Italian’s, Garroni and Musio Sale crafted the deck and interiors. Ever since then, Garroni has worked on all of Prestige Yachts interiors; reflecting on timeless lines, contemporary solutions, and large spacious floorplans with a light airy look and feel.

420 Flybridge

With timeless lines and a highlighted exterior, the style of Garroni design is beautifully expressed on the interior that cleverly combines the bright open living space on the main deck with private spaces in the two cabins; both with separate entrances. With two Volvo IPS 400 diesel engines, this yacht has a cruising speed at 24 knots showing off this Prestige Yacht in exquisite lengths. With a secure and comfortable hull, designed by Jernej Jakopin, it promises with exceptional sea keeping and maneuverability. 

500 Flybridge

Most would call the Prestige 500 Flybridge, a bold icon. 50 feet in length is a unique size for a motor yacht. The interior layout features two concepts that define this yacht; an immense living space on a single level. There is a spacious galley that services both the interior and exterior. Also, there is an en suite that is brightened enormously by two large panoramic windows with an independent access entry. This particular Prestige Yacht has won more awards than any other 50 foot yacht in the entire world. 

550 Flybridge

The Prestige 550 Flybridge is a substantial cruising yacht with high topsides and tall superstructure, this describes this particular flybridge yacht to the tee. This Prestige Yacht delivers a lot of yacht for the money to own one. The grand windows, both above and below, allow for an even bigger feel on the already large open space. The master cabin spreads across a 15 foot 8 inch beam and the VIP feels just as huge! Under the stairs is enough room for a full size washer and dryer, along with some extra storage space. On the port side there is a guest twin that shares a forward head compartment, with no attempt at a third head or fourth cabin, giving each area enough room to breathe and feel as open as it can. 

620 Flybridge

The Prestige 620 Flybridge is an amazing cruising boat, an interior layout that is hard to beat and is slightly different from any flybridge in its class range. There are sliding glass doors into the interior of this vessel that greet you to the galley. The galley has been strategically located to be placed in-between the two main dining areas. The galley is also equipped with an island, perfect for extra food prepping. The natural light that flows in from the large windows on both sides, plus an overhead sunroof, is nothing but exquisite. Below deck contains three staterooms and a crew quarter. The master has a full beam that features a desk/vanity combo as well as a soda and en suite. Overall, the combination of cruising and luxury tied into one on the 620 Flybridge is a yacht perfectly easy for entertaining with an enjoyable cruising experience.

16 superyachts owned by Russian oligarchs

Several luxury yachts owned by wealthy Russians have been detained across Europe this month.

It comes after the West imposed sanctions on oligarchs over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine .

Some have taken evasive action – two such superyachts linked to billionaire Roman Abramovich were spotted approaching the Turkish coast on Tuesday. A group of Ukrainians tried to stop one of the yachts from docking in Turkey.

Chelsea FC owner Mr Abramovich is one of several oligarchs who were added to an EU blacklist last week as governments acted to seize yachts and other luxury assets owned by the billionaires.

Western sanctions resulted in many large vessels relocating from Europe in the past few weeks. Several have headed to places such as the Maldives, which have no extradition treaty with the US.

Where is the Abramovich-owned yacht heading?

Mr Abramovich's yacht Eclipse was seen heading towards Marmaris on Tuesday, according to data compiled by monitoring site Marine Traffic, which was seen by Reuters.

The previous day, his superyacht Solaris was moored in Bodrum, about 80 kilometres from Marmaris, data showed, after skirting waters of EU countries.

There was no suggestion Mr Abramovich was on board either of the yachts.

Which yachts have been detained?

On Monday, a superyacht linked to another Russian billionaire was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar.

The Axioma , believed to belong to Dmitrievich Pumpyansky, moored at Gibraltar on the southern tip of the Iberian Peninsula, Reuters TV footage showed.

Mr Pumpyansky, who is under UK and EU sanctions, owns Russia's largest steel pipe maker TMK. Data shows the 72-metre vessel is owned by a British Virgin Islands holding company called Pyrene investments, Reuters reported. An article published as part of the Panama Papers leaks names Mr Pumpyansky as a beneficiary of the holding.

On March 12, the world's biggest sailing yacht, called Sailing Yacht A and owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko , was seized by Italian police.

Several other luxury yachts have also been detained across Europe, including in Gibraltar, Mallorca in Spain's Balearic Islands and the French coast.

Here are 16 superyachts linked to wealthy Russians

1. Eclipse , a superyacht linked to sanctioned Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich , was this week spotted heading in the direction of Marmaris in Turkey.

2. Solaris , belonging to Mr Abramovich , moored in Bodrum at the start of the week.

3. The Axioma superyacht, belonging to Russian oligarch Dmitrievich Pumpyansky , who is on the EU's list of sanctioned Russians, was detained by authorities after docking in Gibraltar on Monday.

4. The Crescent , which was seized by the Spanish government in Tarragona, Spain, on March 17. The ship's owner is not publicly known, although it is believed to belong to Russian Igor Sechin, head of Rosneft Oil in Moscow.

5. Ragnar , owned by former KGB officer and Russian oligarch Vladimir Strzhalkovsky, who is not on the EU sanctions list.

6. Tango , owned by Russian billionaire Viktor Vekselberg, who was sanctioned by the US on March 11.

7. Lady Anastasia , owned by Russian arms manufacturer Alexander Mijeev, is retained at Port Adriano, Mallorca, as a result of sanctions against Russia and Belarus issued by the European Union.

8. Valerie was seized by the Spanish government in Barcelona, Spain, on March 15. Spanish newspaper El Pais reported that the ship is linked to Rostec State Corporation’s chief executive Sergey Chemezov.

9. The $578 million Sailing Yacht A owned by Russian billionaire Andrey Igorevich Melnichenko was seized by Italian police in the port of Trieste on March 12.

10. The 156-metre Dilbar superyacht is owned by Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov.

11. La Datcha belongs to Russian billionaire businessman Oleg Tinkov.

12. Lady M , owned by Russian oligarch Alexei Mordashov, was seized by Italian police on March 5.

13. Amore Vero was seized in the Mediterranean resort of La Ciotat on March 3 by French authorities. The yacht is linked to Igor Sechin, a Putin ally who runs the Russian oil giant Rosneft.

14. Quantum Blue , owned by a company linked to Russian billionaire Sergei Galitsky, the head of Russian oil giant Rosneft, was seized in southern France on March 3.

15. Superyacht Luna is owned by Russian billionaire Farkhad Akhmedov.

16. Triple Seven is owned by Russian billionaire Alexander Abramov, according to media reports. The yacht was last up for sale in 2020 for €38 million ($41.85 million).

Brought to Conecta Fiction by NEM Zagreb, a dramedy in which three senior citizens, using their supposed respectability as a cover, to turn a garage into a gene-editing lab. Written by Domante Urmonaite and Martynas Mendelis, co-writers on “Troll Farm,” at the 2023 Berlinale Market Selects.

From genre director Alberto Evangelio, behind 2021 Sitges title “The Visitor,” and Ana Piles, a social-issue drama thriller, sparked when Ana returns to her home town in L’Albufera, to take care of her father, a fisherman, but isn’t allowed to follow his trade.

A youth dramedy from Paramount-owned Tel Acv-based pay TV operator and producer Ananey, maintaining the same audience target of its flagship title, “Greenhouse Academy,” which ran for four season on Netflix. Created by Omer Goldman, a director on Ananey’s “Sky” Season 2. Here a conscientious objector has to abandon her pacifist instincts when she becomes the most hated convict in a military prison.  

“Past Waters,”  (“Aguas Passadas,” Caracol Studios, Portugal)  

A Lisbon Noir, as a sub-commissioner, working in a rain-drenched capitol, races against the clock to solve two brutal teen murders. Created by popular novelist-screenwriter João Tordo, a scribe on Netflix’s “Turn of the Tide,” adapting his own novel, and directed by Bruno Gascon and co-produced by TV On Producciones.

“Red City,”  (First Love, France, Yes Studios, Israel)

From François Uzan, who created “Lupin” with George Kay, and actor-writer Ofer Seker (“Raising Hitler”), a resonant political thriller come Western unspooling in Israel in 1957. As the nine-year-old country battles Palestinian and Syrian fedayeen attacks,  a young cop, Elisheva is assigned her first murder, in the far south and a hotbed of exiled criminals.  

“Save Us From the Fires of Hell,”  (“Líbranos de los Fuego del Infierno,” Equeco, Chile)

“The Sleeping Cell,”  (SPi, Portugal)

Set up at SPi, behind Portugal’s first Netflix original series “Gloria,” plus “Codex 632,” with Globoplay and RTP, and “Vanda,” with La Panda and Legendary. Bestselling espionage novelist Nuno Nepomuceno and Miguel Simal, a writer on “Dry Water” and “Glória,” a professor and writer battle an International conspiracy responsible for a terrorist attack in Lisbon.

“4 Words For Love,”  (Helion Pictures, Boat Rocker Studios, U.K. )

From Richard Hurst, a writer on “Miranda” and “Bluestone 42,” and Steven Bawol co-creator of cop series “Section de Recherches” and an executive producer on Canal +’s “Borgia.” A dramedy, affable Irish widower Brendan rents out his Paris apartment, trying to solve his clients’ love problems. Luckily, his teen French daughter is there to save the day. 

“The Angolan Clan,”  (Telnet Screen Productions, U.K.)

Brendan Foley, series writer on “Cold Courage” and Shelly Goldstein, its story editor, weigh in with what is billed as an inheritance thriller. Jenny and Spanish-Angolan born housekeeper Leticia receive an inheritance from Jenny’s father-in-law. But it’s blood money and others want a cut. 

“Bad Decisions,”  (“Malas Decisiones,” La Maldita, Spain)

Created by Pablo Ferreira, development director, and Lucas Mirvois, CEO of La Maldita, a Madrid and Buenos Aires production house, the series version of the same-titled podcast featuring Anna Castillo (“Nowhere”); Luis Tosar (“Maixabel”) and Chino Darin (“The Kingdom”). Surfing online one night, a girl discovers Interpol’s issued a warrant for her arrest. She goes on the run. 

“The Summer of Dead Toys,”  (Corte y Confección, Spain)  

Produced by Corte y Confección, which backed Canneseries winner “Perfect Life” and “The Invisible Line.” Set in 2022 Barcelona, Inspector Salgado – short-fused, violent, macho – and agent Leire Castro – rational, feminist, sometimes naive – investigate a high-society death, which may be related to that of a girl 17 years earlier.

“Unabomber – Ticking Fear,”  (Salice, Wild Sheep Content, Redstring, Italy)

Backed by former Netflix international chief Erik Barmack, via his Wild Sheep Content, with a great record for placing projects at streamers.  A thriller largely produced from Italy, it turns on Alessia, an explosives expert, attempts to track down Unabomber, obsessed with revenge after one of face burns. Created by Leonardo Valenti (“La voce che hai dentro”), Chora Zago and Daniele Morelli.

A Spanish family’s battle against the U.S. government for justice and truth regarding the death of Spanish cameraman José Couso, killed by U.S. fire directed at Baghdad’s Palestine Hotel, housing all foreign journalists, to eliminate an Iraqi observer. A project from La Coruña-based Recrea Films. 

“Gilberta, Life and Death of a Trans Woman,”  (Volf Entertainment, Ultravioleta, Brazil, Portugal)

A four-episode true crime tale about the torture and murder in 2006 of Gilberta Salce by 14 adolescents in Oporto, who were protected from prosecution by Portugal’s Catholic Church. From Volf Entertainment, backed by investment company Lisbon Ventures, and headed by Lionel Vieira, jointly behind RTP prestige series “The Crime of Father Amaro.”

“Hijacked Life,”  (Uzgrobtas Gyvenimas,” MB Laukite Tesinio, Cinema Cartel, Lithuania, U.S.)

The story of an adolescent Soviet hijacker who was convicted of murdering his own father in the U.S, the four-part crime series documents a full circle journey for Algirdas Brazinskas, towards his search for redemption. Scriptwriter Andrius Lekavicius crafts this tale full of brutality, fear and self-reflection. Produced by Lithuania’s MB Laukite Tesinio alongside U.S.-based Cinema Cartel.

“How To Stop A War,”  (Kennedy Films, Spring Films Ireland, Philippines)

Social justice doc meets darkly comedic take on the real-time strife of activists crossing the country to halt a war.

Frank Fenton created the series which includes a distinctive cast of characters as they embark on a politically-charged journey, their personal struggles on display. Produced by Ireland’s Kennedy Films (“My Name Is Emily”) alongside Philippine outfit, Spring Films.

“I Didn’t Kill Borsellino,”  (Salice Production, Loft Production, Italy, Canada)

A potentially riveting Italian crime drama that shines a light on carceral injustice. The series follows Tanino, accused of assassinating an anti-mafia judge. 18 years in prison and lawyers unraveled his conviction, revealing a momentous coverup. Simone Manetti, Dina Lauricella, Matteo Billi script the four-episode journey produced by Italy’s Salice Production and Canada’s Loft Production.

A Christmas competition for the whole family, the seven-part series is produced by Spain’s iZen, the Newen Studios offshoot behind Prime Video’s “El Cid,” and “Memento Mori.”

“Stand-Up Therapy,”  (Noelia Bodas, Charlie Arnaiz, Alberto Ortega, Dadá Films and Entertainment)
