Londoners stunned by 'biggest boat ever seen' as billionaire's super yacht rocks up next to Tower Bridge

The enormous yacht is the property of Fulham FC's owner

LONDON, ENGLAND - OCTOBER 21: The superyacht "Kismet", currently owned by Pakistani-American billionaire Shahid Khan, is seen moored near Tower Bridge on October 21, 2021 in London, England. The yacht is currently for sale with an asking price of €169,000,000 (around £142,607,700). (Photo by Leon Neal/Getty Images)

Londoners have been gazing in awe at a 'superyacht' that moored up near the iconic Tower Bridge, with some saying it's the "biggest boat" they've ever seen. The yacht reportedly turned up over the weekend, leaving Londoners wondering who owns it and what it's doing there. They were also keen to know the price tag.

Some found the yacht a little insensitive, considering that many people in London are struggling financially in the midst of the cost of living crisis. But as it so happens, the owner of the boat is no stranger to the capital.

Posting a picture of the boat on Reddit, one person wrote: "Seriously, this thing showed up this morning and is moored right by Tower Bridge. It's the biggest boat I have seen here, any idea who owns it?"

READ MORE: American tourist leaving US for first time has everyone in stitches asking if they 'still use euros' in London

One person replied: "Sorry but not me as I can barely afford heating, so how the heck do you expect me to own a million dollar super boat?"

Turns out the boat, named 'Kismet', is owned by billionaire Shahid Khan, who also happens to own Fulham Football Club. Shahid bought the club from former owner Mohamed Al Fayed in 2013.

The Pakistani-American tycoon also owns NFL team the Jacksonville Jaguars. The Jaguars will be in town on October 30 to play against the Denver Broncos at Wembley Stadium, perhaps explaining why his boat is moored on the Thames.

The superyacht 'Kismet' is moored opposite Butler's Wharf, downstream on the river Thames from Tower Bridge and the capital's financial district's skyscrapers, on 20th October 2021, in London, England. 'Kismet' is a 95.2m (312 ft)-long superyacht which was built in 2014. It is managed by the Moran Yacht & Ship chartering business, and is owned by Pakistani-American billionaire Shahid Khan. 'Kismet' means "destiny" or "fate" in Khans native Urdu. (Photo by Richard Baker / In Pictures via Getty Images)

The boat is said to currently be on sale for the cost of 169 million euros, or more than £140 million.

Not everyone was happy to see it docked in London. One said: "Waiting for Just Stop Oil to spray paint it as well. Would be brilliant." Another commented: "Think you should never show off such extravagance in a city with homeless people on the street."

Saying that, some Londoners claim they've seen better. "Gone are the Russian mega mega yachts, now come the toddlers," said one. "I mean, does this even have a helipad or two?"

Kismet, which means 'fate' or 'destiny' in Urdu, was built in 2014 and sails under the flag of Cayman Islands. It has its own swimming pool on board.

Superyachts spotted in London

Related articles, superyacht directory.

The UK capital may not be quite as picturesque as France's sparkling shores or Italy's beach-lined coasts - but evidently, there's still a certain appeal among yacht owners as an increasing number of superyachts set a course for London.

With her buttercup-yellow awnings and distinctively brawny exterior, 63.7-metre Scout was spotted brightening up London's waterways this week. The flagship of Dutch yard Royal Hakvoort , Scout is named after the owner and his partner's beloved dog and the mascot that sometimes sits on the bow is a custom-made impression of it. H2 Yacht Design has helmed the interior, and according to our first look inside superyacht Scout , the inside is a wacky and wonderful mix of “what the future was once expected to look like”, with features including an LCD skylight that streams various scenes into the main saloon. Scout is no stranger to Butler's Wharf, having paid a visit to the UK capital last year.

Scintilla Maris

In April, Scintilla Maris was photographed departing from Damen Maaskant 's shipyard in Rotterdam, the Netherlands. The 45.6-metre converted fishing trawler then completed her maiden voyage to London and was docked in Canary Wharf, according to BOATPro . Scintilla Maris ' ambitious refit project has earned her a nomination at this year's World Superyacht Awards in the 'Rebuilt Yacht' category. Works included reducing the yacht's 570GT to below the 500GT threshold and the installation of eclectic, loft-like interiors by Dutch studio Vripack .

The 49.7-metre Triton was seen moored near Tower Bridge in April 2024. She was launched and designed by Delta Marine in 2004 and was the largest composite yacht built in the United States at the time. Triton is best suited to worldwide cruising, deep-sea fishing and exotic reef diving, with an underwater camera in the bow and a lighting rig at the stern that "provides guests front-row seats for observing the ocean’s mysteries". A sonar and bottom-mapping system by Simrad can also photograph and 3D map the bottom of the ocean, easily locating any nearby wreckage. Interior highlights include a full-width master cabin with a sitting room, library, office and his and hers bathroom.

Bravo Eugenia

Oceanco 's 109-metre Bravo Eugenia has visited the Big Smoke many times, showing off a chiselled Nuvolari Lenard exterior and dazzling underwater light display. A sharp plumb bow and extended waterline make her one of the distinctive superyachts on the water, and she certainly cuts an elegant profile whenever she arrives in London. With her hybrid propulsion engine, she offers a quiet electric mode which allows her to consume 30 per cent less fuel than other motor yachts in her size class, making her one of the more eco-friendly yachts in the world . She was most recently sighted in November 2023 at Butler's Wharf Pier, Tower Bridge.

The 90-metre expedition yacht has been spotted anchored in front of Tower Bridge following delivery from Lürssen 's yard in Germany. Launched in February 2023, Norn has since travelled across the Baltic and North Sea, including a skirt around Sweden’s Skåne County and a brief stop in the port of Helsingborg on the 9 of June, according to BOATPro . Key features include an outdoor cinema and changeable-depth pool floor with dance floor illumination.

Prior to arriving in Canary Wharf, the 56-metre Benetti build enjoyed a cruising expedition in the cruising grounds from where she gets her name. Australia ’s Stefano Ricci lines and navy hull attracted plenty of attention along the Gold Coast, and the 2012 build has an equally impressive interior with three individual dining saloons. She was launched as Ulysses and later became known as Bash , and was formerly owned by two serial yacht owners.

Fresh from an Atlantic crossing that began in early May and a stop-off in Portsmouth, the 54.3-metre Amels yacht Revelry was spotted docked in Canary Wharf. The yacht has a textbook Tim Heywood exterior and interiors by Laura Sessa , as part of the Dutch yard's Limited Editions 177 series. She was launched as 4You in 2012 and changed ownership in 2021.

The 110-metre Kaos (ex Jubilee ) is the largest yacht to pay a visit to London in recent years. She cruised up the Thames in May 2023, stopping in front of Butler's Wharf and Tower Bridge to show off her unique blue exterior penned by Lobanov Design . The multi-award-winning yacht has a stellar range of onboard amenities, including an 8.5-metre pool, aquarium and a multitude of custom-designed pieces not found on any other yacht. At the time of her last sale in 2018, she was one of the largest sales in yachting history.

The third unit in Benetti 's highly popular Oasis 40M series, named Phoenix , has spent a significant amount of time cruising the coastline of Great Britain. Since her delivery in 2021, she has paid visits to Southampton and Ireland as well as to Canary Wharf and Tower Bridge. Key features include the signature Oasis deck, which boasts a glass-fronted dipping pool and unfolding bulwarks. The design of this model was so popular it inspired a smaller 34 metre series, with Zlatan Ibrahimović buying the first unit .

The 49.1-metre Reef Chief was spotted docked in the heart of Canary Wharf in 2022. The yacht was delivered by American yard Trinity in 2009 and has been designed with entertainment at its core. She is crowned by a large sundeck with an exterior bar, shaded dining area and TV screen, along with a Jacuzzi. Ten guests can be accommodated in five cabins, which are styled in classic polished wood and cream tones.

The 33.7-metre Van der Valk superyacht Blue Jeans made her maiden voyage to London after departing the shipyard in the Netherlands. Her cool blue hull added a touch of brightness to a dreary London day, and she spent her time cruising up and down the river showing off her custom Guido De Groot exterior. The all-aluminium yacht is one of the builder's most complex undertakings to date and is home to a foredeck "chillout lounge" with sun pads tucked into the bow, a U-shaped sofa and a dining table that pops up from the deck.

Fresh from a comprehensive refit and extension, the 44-metre motor yacht Brazil paid a visit to the River Thames in December 2022. The yacht was spotted moored outside St Katharine Docks Marina enjoying some winter sunshine in front of Tower Bridge. She was originally delivered by Heesen in 1993 and was relaunched in October following an extensive refit courtesy of a collaboration between three Dutch firms – Snijders Yachts, Zwijnenburg and Dutchflows. Work was primarily focused around the stern area, where the yacht was given a new beach club. The yacht is listed for sale with IYC .

Slipstream was delivered in 2009 as one of two 60-metre models from French shipyard CMN , Both exterior and interior were curated by Winch Design and the British studio has given her a smart navy hull with a distinctive grey superstructure. She features generous living and entertainment areas with an outdoor cinema on the sundeck and a hand-carved 4.5-metre totem pole at the centrepiece of a feature staircase. Owned by Canadian businessman Jack Cowin, Slipstream is currently available for charter by Burgess .

Having recently completed a cross-planet navigation that included Norway, the Maldives and Australia, 62-metre Stardust was spotted cruising up the Thames and into Canary Wharf in July 2022. The Amels build was handed over to her owners in 2020, and is the first and only hull in the Dutch yard's Limited Editions 206 series. Interior design comes from Laura Sessa, while Tim Heywood is responsible for the yacht's distinctive exterior, which is characterised by long lines of circular portholes and a cut-out segment in the hull line.

The 75.6-metre Boardwalk is one of the newer deliveries from prestigious Dutch shipbuilder Feadship , and she caused a big buzz when she moored up on the Thames against the backdrop of Tower Bridge. Her aft deck helipad, generous beach club and huge TV screens were on full display to lucky onlookers who were able to catch a glimpse of her.

Delivered in 2010 from Lürssen, 60-metre Bella Vita paid a brief visit to London, where she was seen along Butler's Wharf, just in front of Tower Bridge. Launched under the name Katie Sue II , the yacht became one of the top 50 most expensive yachts for sale in the world prior to her sale in January 2021. No doubt her new owner is enjoying her Glade Johnson interior and well-equipped sundeck.

The 55.5-metre Moon Sand made waves when she cruised up the Thames shortly after her delivery from Lürssen . The yacht has a number of innovative features on deck, including a recessed pool that can be drained and raised flush with the deck when not in use. The yacht's crisp profile and clean, soothing interiors are by legendary yacht design studio Bannenberg & Rowell .

With her sky-blue hull and buttercup yellow exterior accents, the Abeking & Rasmussen -built 98 metre motor Aviva added some colour to the city when she visited. The yacht is home to an onboard paddel tennis court - the first of its kind ever installed - which had to be carefully engineered in order to create the correct level of bounce.

Heesen's largest steel superyacht to date was spotted in London displaying her new name Lusine . The yacht hit the water in 2021 sporting a masculine exterior courtesy of Omega Architects and an interior by Sinot Yacht and Architecture Design . A glass elevator lies at the heart of the design while a touch-and-go helipad forward allows guests to come and go in complete privacy.

With her "champagne and caviar" interiors and two-deck video walls in the lobby, 95-metre Kismet is all about the wow factor. Her interiors are by Reymond Langton, while her exteriors are the work of Espen Øino and she features an impressive jaguar statue on the bowsprit. She marks one of the most expensive yachts for charter in the world , asking a cool €1,200,000 for one week.

Motor Yacht A

One of the most recognisable yachts in the world, Motor Yacht A is sure to have drawn the crowds in the UK capital with her unconventional design. The 119-metre Blohm + Voss was commissioned by Russian billionaire Andrey Melnichenko. Following the Ukraine war, the superyacht was moved to Dubai in the United Arab Emirates, where it remains to this day, according to BOATPro .

Shelter island’s menantic yacht club is setting sail into 2024.

no problem of london yacht

The Menantic Yacht Club (MYC) is back for another season of fun Sunfish racing and camaraderie.

Our membership has increased over the years, with an average of 25 sailors participating every weekend. There will be one major change this year as the MYC’s long-time Commodore Pete Bethge has retired; he and Sallie are now enjoying life full-time in Florida. The MYC leadership now consists of yours truly as commodore, Steve Shepstone as vice commodore, Melissa Shepstone as treasurer, and Betsy Colby as secretary.

I hope everyone had an enjoyable winter and spring. I know some of our sailors, including Peter Beardsley, Alicia Rojas and Lee Montes, did their share of frostbiting over the winter.

On a sad note, Dave Olsen, a long-time, much-loved member of the MYC passed in December. Dave was a top notch sailor who was more interested in giving a helping hand to anyone in need, on or off the race course, than in finishing first. Dave hand-made a number of the MYC’s most beautiful trophies; some of his handmade trophies reside at the Shelter Island Yacht Club as well.

Dave, with his green helmet and helping hand, will be missed by the entire Shelter Island sailing community, and especially by the MYC.

On Sunday June 23, Vice-Commodore Steve Shepstone will hold a Race Committee “Tune-Up Practice” at 1 p.m. at his home at 5 Wheeler Road. He will review RC duties, including safety procedures, sailing instructions, mark placements and communications. Review will be both on shore and on water. Volunteers and sailors are invited and should attend. RSVP to Steve Shepstone ( [email protected] ). You will learn about the finer points of conducting sailboat races. Steve is a judge with US Sailing.

Charlie Modica has a special treat in store for everyone this summer — stay tuned.

Betty Bishop and Matt Fox will captain the stake and mark boats, and hopefully our dedicated crew of volunteers will return: Debra Mintz, Amy Cococcia, Dave Daly, Ben Gonzales, Melanie Coronetz, Rita Gates, Ed Goble Elsie Rose, Mike Donlon, Susan Donlon, and all the others who volunteer from time-to-time.

And, of course, Betsy Colby will be race PRO, hopefully assisted by Marion Thomsen, Ed Hydeman and others. Non-sailors from the Shelter Island community are also invited to volunteer. Charlie, as usual, will loan the MYC his inflatable for use as the stake boat, and Jonathan Brush’s powerboat will be used by the Race Committee. Tom NcMahon’s BW will be used also.

Prior to the first race on Sunday, June 30, there will be a skippers’ meeting at our “clubhouse” at Commodore Pete’s Landing, i.e., the North Silver Beach Town landing, starting at 12:30 p.m., with the first horn going off at 2 p.m.

We will all have a chance to catch up with each other after a long winter, and to answer any questions about the upcoming season. If you have not already returned your waivers and membership forms, please bring them. They will also be available at the meeting.

The MYC was started in 1933, continued until the early 1950’s, and then had a hiatus until Commodore Pete reactivated it in 1968. Back in the day, Commodore Pete sailed Cape Cod Rockets; later he switched to Sunfish, which we sail today. In the words of Commodore Pete: “Menantic Yacht Club has a wonderful history of being a welcoming club. We are very proud of our two “C’s — camaraderie and Corinthian sailing.”

The MYC is a family-oriented club, and we would love to have some younger sailors join us. In previous years we have had families sailing together and as teams sharing the same boat.

We are a very congenial club, open to all. We may not have a clubhouse, but the sailing is great, the camaraderie is superb, and we just have tremendous fun. All sailors, novice to expert, are welcome. Just show up in West Neck Harbor at 2 on any Sunday starting on June 30 and going through September 1 the Sunday of Labor Day weekend.

Check in with the Race Committee giving them your full name and sail number, and be sure to bring your life jacket. Non-sailors are also welcome to assist with the Race Committee and stake boats. You can get more information about the MYC from our Facebook page: Menantic Yacht Club, or from Bob Harris at [email protected] . Steve and Melissa Shepstone have a fleet of loaner boats available on a first to reserve basis. Contact Ellen Leonforte at 914-450-1450 or at [email protected] to reserve your boat.

The MYC is a Shelter Island tradition. Let’s keep up the tradition, so please join us this summer for some of the best fun you will ever have.

See you on the water.

On a another note: congratulations to Peter Beardsley, Lee Montes, Paul Zinge, Rich Prieto and others on their participation in the Sunfish North American Championships this past weekend. Peter and Lee qualified for the Worlds. No small feat against 105 other competitors.

Two men in hospital with burns after explosion and fire on boat

no problem of london yacht

Two men are being treated for burns in hospital after an explosion on a boat in Hampshire.

Fire and ambulance crews along with the RNLI and coastguard were called to the yacht in Lymington Yacht Haven around 12.45pm on Tuesday (June 11).

One of the men onboard suffered significant burn injuries to his face, hands, and legs.

The pair were treated by lifeboat crews before being taken to Southampton General Hospital.

The RNLI said the lifeboat crew were first on scene and updated HM Coastguard crew on the status of the two casualties.

They administered emergency first aid to both victims, cooling and wrapping burns along with administering a nebuliser to negate any risk of inhalation burns.

Lifeboat crewman James Douch said: "All the rescue services and marina staff worked together seamlessly to administer vital casualty care.

"We wish the casualties a speedy recovery."

Three-Body Problem Movie Announces Iconic Director

Posted: June 18, 2024 | Last updated: June 18, 2024

Netflix’s latest sci-fi series, 3 Body Problem, premiered on March 21 to a flurry of viewer engagement, instantly landing the series on the top 10 list for the streamers’ US audience chart.

While early reviews for the series have been mixed, many fans seem to be completely hooked, despite the fact that viewers may be setting themselves up for heartbreak.

From a book to a series and now to a movie, The Three-Body Problem’s feature-length makeover has officially found its director in Chinese filmmaker, Zhang Yimou. The news, which was announced at the Shanghai International Film Festival, gives the talented director a chance to move into the sci-fi genre after having conquered other avenues like comedies, martial arts, and action. The production will be overseen by Enlight Media, one of the country’s top three studios.

3 Body Problem Season 2 will have to tell us what happens with Saul Durand now that he has been named a Wallfacer. In the second book, he abuses his powers by demanding a fantasy woman who becomes his wife and his own home. Furthermore, his wife puts herself and their child into hibernation. Later, a small Trisolaran probe enters Earth’s solar system and destroys an entire fleet almost instantly.

A Money-Making Director

For those familiar with his work, Zhang Yimou is an obvious choice to stand as the helmer for the movie version of The Three-Body Problem. The director has quite a successful track record, having previously released such money-making titles as Hero, House of Flying Daggers, and Full River Red. And, we don’t toss around the adjective “money-making” lightly as, over his career, Zhang’s productions have raked in well over $1 billion in ticket sales.

Remembrance Of Earth’s Past

Like the series that was released on Netflix earlier this year, the film will follow the events that take place in The Three-Body Problem, the first book to come from author Liu Cixin’s Remembrance of Earth’s Past sci-fi book series.

The story focuses on the titular physics theory and follows a group of humans living on Earth in the past, present, and future who encounter an alien species that threatens the planet as we know it. As of right now, no casting announcements have been revealed surrounding who will appear in Zhang Yimou’s take on the beloved novel.

A Fearless Director

One thing that audiences eager to see what Zhang Yimou does with The Three-Body Problem should take into account is that the filmmaker has never shied away from exploring China’s Cultural Revolution.

This is important because, while the book series talks about the country’s dark years between 1966 and 1976, it doesn’t fully dig into what happened. Unafraid of his government, having even had a screening at the Berlin Film Festival halted back in 2019 by Chinese authorities, it can be expected that Zhang Yimou will follow in the footsteps of the Netflix series and make sure a light is shone on the taboo topic.

no problem of london yacht

The Netflix Series

The streamer’s adaptation of The Three-Body Problem—3 Body Problem–was created by Game of Thrones team David Benioff and D.B. Weiss as well as Alexander Woo. Featuring familiar faces such as John Bradley (Game of Thrones), Jovan Adepo (Babylon), Liam Cunningham (The Last Voyage of the Demeter), Rosalind Chao (Star Trek: The Next Generation), Eiza González (The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare), and more, the series was an immediate hit for Netflix and was soon picked up for a sophomore installment.

As 3 Body Problem became the latest Netflix sensation with its debut on the streaming platform last week, some of the discussion surrounding the show has been mired in tragic circumstances. Producer for the show Lin Qi died back in 2020 in a situation that authorities determined was due to foul play. An investigation pointed to Qi being murdered through being poisoned by their coworker at Yoozoo Games, Xu Yao, and in light of these findings, Xu was tried and has been sentenced to face the death penalty for his actions.

Social Commentary

As of right now, no further details surrounding Zhang Yimou’s version of The Three-Body Problem have been revealed. Should the director have full creative control, audiences can expect not just an adaptation but a solid piece of social commentary that focuses its lens on the past, present, and future, all while remaining loyal to the source material that came before it. No release date has been announced for the movie or the second season of Netflix’s hit sci-fi series.

Shein ipo should be a no brainer investment, yet caution reigns.

Despite soaring sales, Shein is struggling to shake off sustainability concerns. (Photo by Alain ... [+] Pitton/NurPhoto via Getty Images)

The founder of Gen Z super brand Shein must be wondering whether the company will ever catch a break over the long-running soap opera that is the fashion retailer’s much vaunted IPO.

On the face of it, investing in Shein should be a no brainer. And yet, and yet...

Shein generated an estimated $32.5 billion in revenue in 2023, a 43% increase on the $22.7 billion it made in 2022. It has around 88.8 million active shoppers, 17.3 million of whom are based in the U.S. and Shein’s app was downloaded 238 million times in 2023, making it the most downloaded fashion app of that year.

Those are off-the-scale figures and the potential value of its IPO could reach north of $65 billion whether it list in London or New York .

Yet the IPO has been dogged by questions over Shein’s sustainability and governance practices. As a result, the company in recent weeks has begun to lean towards an IPO on the London Stock Exchange (LSE) after butting up against repeated roadblocks over its original plans to list in New York.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Best 5% interest savings accounts of 2024.

Britain’s two main political parties, Labour and the Conservatives, are locked in a General Election battle that will culminate on July 4, but both have courted Shein and so there are currently few obvious political hurdles in a U.K. market desperate for a good news story for the beleaguered LSE.

Shein's FTSE 100 Question

Shein has been preparing a confidential filing for an IPO in London, which indicates a move towards using the platform in the U.K. although it is not definitive or binding, though the float is unlikely to take place until after the European summer vacations in August.

But last weekend The Sunday Times reported that Shein may not qualify for inclusion on the FTSE 100 Index because the number of shares being sold by Shein will not meet the minimum requirement for inclusion on FTSE indexes. Companies incorporated outside the U.K. must have a minimum free float of 25% under stock exchange rules.

There have also been growing reports that institutional investors are wary of the potential listing, with the appetite for risk dampened by series of reforms over accounting, governance, regulation and disclosure, notably new powers for the Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) and European lawmakers over greenwashing.

Institutional Caution Over Shein

The Financial Times has reported that some fund managers with ESG mandates have been shunning the proposed listing, and holdings in Shein for the major institutional investors may prove reputationally problematic as they come under ever-increasing scrutiny over the ethics and governance of the companies that they invest in.

Shein's "Endless Summer Show" 2023 in Paris, France. (Photo by Kristy Sparow/Getty Images)

Stepping up the pressure, Florida Republican Marco Rubio has written to U.K. Chancellor Jeremy Hunt to raise concerns, stating: “Shein previously sought to list in New York City but failed due to concerns about its unethical and irresponsible business practices. At the time, I warned U.S. securities regulators about Shein’s alleged exploitation of slave labor and trade loopholes.

"I now feel a duty of friendship to repeat these warnings and urge caution before the United Kingdom allows Shein to list in London," he said.

And the British Fashion Council (BFC) recently became the latest industry body to speak out about its planned London flotation, which it deemed a “significant concern” to the fashion sector.

For its part, ever since the early indications that Shein may be interested in going public, the company has been on a charm offensive to stress the measures it is taking to be more environmentally responsible. Whether those green punches are landing is another question.

It has also emphasized its role as a technology-led company, and it is through technical innovations that it has forged ahead of many of its apparel rivals.

Shein’s management must surely be looking at the soaring sales and financial performance, plus the brand’s growth trajectory, and be wondering why the mood music seems to be playing a different tune.
