Cost of Buying & Owning a Small Yacht (Detailed Breakdown)

While some people may prioritize a slower, more eco-friendly, and more hands-on experience that they get from a sailing yacht, others may prefer a faster, more luxurious, but less hands-on experience from operating a motor yacht. However, the tiebreaker comes down to the costs of owning and maintaining them. With that, let's explore how much you'll need to buy and own either a small sailing yacht or a motor yacht, and see which one is more affordable.

A new 30-foot sailing yacht can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000, while a used one in good condition can range from $20,000 to $100,000. On the other hand, a new 30-foot motor yacht can cost between $100,000 and $500,000, while a used one can range from $50,000 to $300,000.

The ongoing costs of owning a yacht include maintenance and repair costs, fuel costs, insurance, docking fees, and more. Let's take a closer look at each of these costs and how they can impact your budget.

  • The initial purchase price and ongoing costs of owning a motor yacht are higher than those of a sailing yacht.
  • A sailing yacht relies mostly on wind power, while motor yachts require more complex mechanical systems and need more fuel.
  • Purchasing older yachts may require more maintenance and repairs.
  • Additional initial expenses when purchasing a used yacht include hiring a surveyor, buying bottom paint, looking for upgrades, and purchasing safety equipment.
  • Insurance costs for motor yachts are higher due to their faster speeds and increased risk of accidents.

1. The average cost of owning a new 30-foot sailing yacht

On average, a small brand-new sailing yacht can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000 or more. This price range typically includes basic features like a cabin, galley, and bathroom, as well as a mast, sails, and rigging. However, the price may not include additional amenities like a generator, air conditioning, or advanced navigation systems.

In addition to the initial purchase price, there are also ongoing costs associated with owning a sailing yacht, such as mooring fees, maintenance and repairs, insurance, and fuel costs. These expenses can add up quickly, and you may need to factor them into your budget when considering buying a sailing yacht.

One advantage of owning a sailing yacht is that it can be less expensive to operate than a power yacht, as it relies on wind power rather than fuel. However, sailing yachts also require more maintenance and upkeep, particularly for the rigging and sails .

Initial expenses for a new 30-foot sailing yacht

$50,000 - $200,000

$5,000 - $20,000
$1,200 - $2,400

2. The average cost of owning a used 30-foot sailing yacht

In general, you can expect to pay anywhere from $20,000 to $100,000 for a used 30-foot sailing yacht. This cost will typically include the purchase price of the boat itself, as well as any necessary upgrades or repairs that may be required.

Once you have purchased the boat, there are a number of ongoing costs associated with owning and maintaining it. These can include mooring or slip fees, insurance, registration and licensing fees, and regular maintenance and repairs.

Although used sailing yachts can be much more affordable than new ones, they may require more maintenance and repairs which can be costly and time-consuming. There may be hidden issues or problems with a used boat that are not immediately apparent, which can lead to unexpected expenses down the line.

Initial expenses for a used 30-foot sailing yacht

$20,000 - $100,000
$500 - $1,500

3. The average cost of owning a new 30-foot motor yacht

The cost of a new 30-foot motor yacht can range from around $100,000 to over $500,000, with some luxury models costing even more. Although operating a motor yacht requires less skill and experience than operating a sailing yacht, the initial purchase price and ongoing costs are higher than that of a sailing yacht.

This is because motor yachts require more complex mechanical systems, such as engines, generators, and other electrical and plumbing systems, which can be expensive to install and maintain. They also need more fuel than sailing yachts, which can result in higher ongoing costs for fuel and maintenance.

Initial expenses for a new 30-foot motor yacht

$100,000 - $500,000
$7,500 - $37,500
$50 - $250

$1,500 - $7,500
$2,000 - $10,000
$3,000 - $15,000

4. The average cost of owning a used 30-foot motor yacht

A used 30-foot motor yacht can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $300,000 or more. However, you'll need to note that older yachts may require more maintenance and repairs, which can add to the overall cost of ownership.

It can be difficult to know how these yachts were used and maintained by their previous owner, which can lead to unexpected issues and repairs. They may also have less fuel-efficient engines, which can lead to higher fuel costs over time.

Initial expenses for a used 30-foot motor yacht

$50,000 to $300,000
$500 - $3,000
$1,000 - $6,000
$1,500 - $7,500

Recurring expenses for a used 30-foot motor yacht

Expenses Involved In Buying and Owning A Small Yacht

Initial expenses in buying a small yacht

Boat purchase is not cheap.

The first cost you'll encounter when buying a yacht is the purchase price which can range from tens of thousands of dollars to millions of dollars. When setting a budget for your yacht purchase, try to consider not only the purchase price but also the ongoing costs of ownership.

You need to register your yacht

Before you can legally operate your small yacht, you need to register it with the relevant authorities. The registration process depends on your location and the size of your yacht. In Oregon, for example, all boats with motors must be titled and registered with the Oregon State Marine Board. The registration fee is based on the length of the vessel.

To register your yacht, you will need to provide proof of ownership, such as a bill of sale, and complete the necessary paperwork. You may also need to provide proof of insurance and pay any applicable taxes.

Factor in payment for taxes

Each state has its own tax laws, and some states may have additional taxes or fees that apply to yacht owners. In Florida, there is a 6% sales tax on boats, while in Texas, the sales tax is 6.25%. In addition to state taxes, some municipalities or counties may also charge a local sales tax.

Set aside payment for the title fee

The title fee is the cost of transferring the ownership of the yacht from the seller to the buyer. The title fee for a small yacht can range from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars.

Budget for hiring a surveyor

A survey is particularly important when buying a used boat, as it can help uncover any hidden problems that may not be immediately apparent to the buyer. Used boats can have a range of issues, from minor cosmetic defects to serious structural damage, and a survey can help to identify these issues before the sale is completed.

During the survey, the marine surveyor will thoroughly inspect the boat's hull, deck, and superstructure, as well as its mechanical systems, electrical systems, and safety equipment. The surveyor will also test the boat's performance on the water, including its handling, speed, and maneuverability.

After the survey is complete, the surveyor will provide the buyer with a detailed report of their findings, including any defects or deficiencies that were identified. This report can be used by the buyer to negotiate the purchase price or to request that any necessary repairs be made before the sale is completed.

Used small yachts need upgrades and customizations

One of the joys of yacht ownership is the ability to customize your vessel to suit your needs and preferences. Some common upgrades and customizations include:

  • Deck hardware: Installing new hardware such as cleats, winches, and blocks can improve the functionality of your yacht, but can also be expensive.
  • Communications: Upgrading your communication systems, such as radios and satellite phones, can improve safety and convenience, but can also be costly.
  • Vinyls: Adding vinyl graphics to your yacht can be a fun way to personalize your vessel, but can also be expensive.
  • Anti-fouling paint: Applying anti-fouling paint to the bottom of your yacht can help prevent the growth of marine organisms, but can also be a recurring expense.

Consider the costs of buying safety equipment

Safety should always be a top priority when operating a yacht. Some essential safety equipment includes:

  • Life jackets: Having enough properly fitting life jackets for all passengers is essential for safety.
  • Fire extinguishers: Having properly functioning fire extinguishers on board can help prevent a disaster.
  • First aid kit: Having a well-stocked first aid kit on board can help in case of injury or illness.
  • Emergency signaling devices: Having emergency signaling devices such as flares or an EPIRB can help alert others in case of emergency.
For a more detailed list of the safety equipment you need for your newly purchased small yacht, here's an article you can refer to.

Recurring costs for owning a small yacht

In addition to the initial expenses, there are also ongoing costs associated with owning a yacht such as the following:

Avail an insurance policy for your yacht

Shop around for insurance agencies that specialize in yachts, as there are many clauses and catchphrases that are unfamiliar to the average insurance agent. Insurance companies that specialize in boats often provide surprising discounts for both your own skills and the equipment on your boat.

A specialized insurance policy is generally estimated at between 0.8% and 1.2% of the boat's purchase price per year. It should also cover these 10 basic things included in this article.

Sailing yachts may be more expensive to insure due to their increased risk of damage from weather and other environmental factors, while motor yachts may be more expensive due to their higher speeds and increased risk of accidents.

Keep in mind dockage and mooring fees

You can save money on docking fees by anchoring in free anchorages or finding marinas that offer discounts for long-term stays. Some marinas charge by the foot, while others charge a flat rate. You can try to research different marinas in your area to find the best deal.

In addition to the basic fee, some marinas charge extra for amenities such as electricity, water, and Wi-Fi. You may also want to consider the location of the marina since marinas in popular tourist destinations tend to be more expensive than those in less popular locations.

If you're in California, here are 7 places where you can dock your yacht at the cheapest price.

Consider costs for maintenance and repairs

Maintaining and repairing your small yacht is an important part of yacht ownership. Regular maintenance ensures that your yacht is safe to operate, and it can prevent costly repairs down the line.

Routine maintenance is the regular upkeep of your yacht, which includes things like cleaning, oil changes, and checking the engine and other systems. Consider following the manufacturer's guidelines for routine maintenance, as this will help prevent breakdowns and keep your yacht in good condition.

Now, even with regular maintenance, repairs may be necessary from time to time. Repairs can range from minor fixes like replacing a lightbulb to major repairs like fixing a damaged hull. Address repairs as soon as possible to prevent further damage.

Account for fuel costs

mini yacht price

The type of yacht you own will determine the fuel you use. For example, a motor yacht will require more fuel than a sailing yacht. Fuel costs are usually calculated per gallon. You can use a yacht fuel cost calculator to estimate how much fuel you will need for your trip and the approximate cost.

You can save money on fuel costs by filling up at a marina that offers fuel at a lower price. You might also want to consider using fuel additives that can improve your yacht's fuel efficiency and reduce fuel consumption.

The best small cruising yachts in 2023

  • Theo Stocker
  • September 29, 2023

Despite bigger yachts dominating the new boat scene in recent decades, there are still any number of builders making new smaller cruisers. Here's our pick of the best small cruising yachts in 2023

mini yacht price

We have seen a surprisingly large number of builders going against the grain to bring small cruising yachts to market in the last year or so, ranging from trailer0-sailers to smaller traditionally-styled options. Here, we’ve rounded up 4 of the best small cruising yachts launched in the last year.

Typically this size of yacht appeals to those who are looking for a day sailer or weekender and will often offer reduced draught in able to allow you to go creek crawling or nose your way into otherwise hard to get to anchorages.

Once you’ve seen one, Bente yachts are unmistakable. We revisited the brand’s first boat, the Bente 24 , a couple of issues ago, which has been around for 10 years or so. The brand then launched the striking Bente 39 which was immensely innovative, but the company ran into financial difficulties. Now under new owners and a more stable footing, a third model has been launched, which I can’t wait to test sail. The Bente 28 is unlike any other 28-footer.

The hull is cutting edge with wide transom, double rudders and full bows providing a powerful hull form as well as volume below. Construction is polyester GRP foam sandwich, with the basic version being heavier hand lamination, and the more expensive Edition version being vacuum infused. While this is a boat designed to be fast, it’s a long way from a wild racing boat.

Displacement is a not outlandish 3.2 tonnes and draught is 1.6m (there’s an option for a 1.95m performance T-keel with lead bulb that’s 100kg lighter), so it fits well within the scope of a sensible cruising boat.

The Tide 25, built by MFH in north Germany – began its life as a Dehler SQ25, but the mould was sold off when that company hit hard times. Plumb bows and stern with a long hull chine, bevelled deck edge and twin rudders put her on trend, and maximise performance under sail and accommodation on board.

On deck, she has a large cockpit with benches forward and four decent lockers. Under the cockpit sole there’s access to what would be engine space for a diesel inboard, now housing batteries for the electric motors.

Opt for the sport version, and you’ll get beefed up deck hardware and a minimalist fit out, with the mainsheet traveller across the transom, while the comfort version has a smaller main with the mainsheet coming to a fixed point on the cockpit sole forward of the helm. The rig has aft-swept spreaders and no backstay.

mini yacht price

The fact that the accommodation of the Pointer 30 is designed around a Nespresso machine, enshrined in glory, tells you a lot about this boat. It was conceived as a comfortable, fast and stylish weekend cruiser that you can take your friends down to for a coffee before a nice sail to somewhere for lunch. This is a boat that knows what it is about. Tea drinkers, don’t worry; there’s still a gas hob to boil a kettle.

The sail area isn’t vast, but this looks to be an easily driven hull. A below-deck furler setting a genoa that sheets to tracks on the coachroof is standard, with a self-tacker being optional.

The fixed bowsprit houses a bow roller, and a tack point for furling offwind sails – the gennaker takes her offwind sail area up to 100m2, set from an aluminium twin-spreader rig with adjustable backstay. She has a powerful kicker, but no traveller for the main, which is sheeted to a raised plinth in the cockpit sole.

Below deck the layout is simple, clean and quietly stylish. Headroom is restricted, dictated by the low freeboard and elegant lines.

To port, the heart of the boat is the ‘coffee bar’ on a shelf in the moulded hull liner, next to a small dinette-style table with two leather swivel armchairs. The forward of these chairs spins round to face a neat lift-top desk (though the drawer below isn’t large enough for a chart).

mini yacht price

Swallow Yachts 32

Aimed at sailors who may have owned larger yachts before but want to downsize, Swallow Yachts owner Matt Newland explained that he ‘wanted to build a boat that was fun and easy to sail, simple to maintain and had timeless looks with as low an environmental impact as possible.’

Though not a true launch-and-sail trailer sailer, a four-by-four will still be able to tow the 32 on her own trailer, as boat and trailer come in at under 3.5 tonnes, and within the 2.9m overhang limit.

With a keel-down draught of 2.8m, a fine entry at the bow and broad aft sections, this boat promises to be a good performer. You can sail with the lifting keel in any position for shoal waters, but lift it all the way and you’ve got a draught of just 40cm for creek crawling and drying out.

Newland has tried to draw lines that are timeless rather than trendy while a retractable bowsprit, backstayless carbon rig and square-top mainsail ensure she is right up there in terms of her contemporary design and latest tech.

What is a Mini Yacht?

A mini yacht, also known as a pocket yacht, is a motor yacht that is typically under 50 feet in length. Despite their smaller size, mini yachts still offer a range of exceptional features and amenities for guests to enjoy. They are designed to provide the luxurious experience of a larger yacht but with the convenience and ease of operation of a smaller vessel. Mini yachts can be used for day trips or as liveaboard vessels, and they often do not require a captain or crew to operate.

Mini yachts are equipped with a variety of impressive features and amenities that enhance the overall experience for those on board. Some common features of mini yachts include:

  • Spacious cabins: Despite their smaller size, mini yachts often have well-designed cabins that offer comfortable sleeping quarters for guests.
  • Sun decks and lounging areas: Many mini yachts feature sun decks and lounging areas where guests can relax and soak up the sun.
  • Galley and dining areas: Mini yachts usually have well-equipped galleys and dining areas where guests can enjoy delicious meals prepared on board.
  • Bathrooms with showers: Mini yachts typically have bathrooms with showers, providing guests with the comfort and convenience of home.
  • Entertainment systems: Mini yachts often come equipped with entertainment systems, including TVs, sound systems, and Wi-Fi, to keep guests entertained during their voyage.
  • Water toys: Many mini yachts offer water toys such as paddleboards, kayaks, and snorkeling gear, allowing guests to explore the surrounding waters.

These are just a few examples of the features and amenities you can expect to find on a mini yacht. Each yacht may vary in terms of its offerings, so it’s important to research and choose a mini yacht that aligns with your preferences and needs.

Factors Affecting Mini Yacht Prices

When it comes to the price of a mini yacht, several factors come into play. These factors can significantly influence the cost of a mini yacht and contribute to the price range within this category of boats. It’s important to understand these factors to make an informed decision when purchasing a mini yacht .

1. Age of the Vessel: The age of a mini yacht is a significant factor affecting its price. Brand new mini yachts from reputable builders tend to have higher price tags due to their advanced features and state-of-the-art technology. On the other hand, used mini yachts may come at a lower cost, providing an opportunity to own a quality vessel without breaking the bank.

2. Builder and Reputation: The reputation and craftsmanship of the yacht builder can also impact the price of a mini yacht. Established and well-known builders often command higher prices for their yachts due to their commitment to excellence, innovative designs, and use of premium materials. However, lesser-known builders may offer equally exceptional mini yachts at more competitive price points.

3. Amenities and Features: The amenities and features available on a mini yacht can greatly influence its price. Yachts equipped with luxurious amenities such as spacious cabins, state-of-the-art entertainment systems, gourmet kitchens, and lavish outdoor spaces typically come at a higher cost. However, there are options available for those seeking a more modestly priced mini yacht without compromising on comfort.

4. Size and Capacity: The size and capacity of a mini yacht can also impact its price. Larger mini yachts with more spacious interiors and higher passenger capacities generally have higher price tags. However, it’s important to consider your specific needs and preferences when determining the ideal size of a mini yacht for your lifestyle.

5. Depreciation: Depreciation is an essential factor to consider when evaluating the price of a mini yacht. Like any other asset, mini yachts may experience depreciation over time, which can impact their resale value. Understanding the depreciation rate of different mini yachts and their brands can help you gauge their long-term value and potential return on investment.

By considering these factors, potential buyers can gain insight into the range of prices for mini yachts and make informed decisions that align with their budget and preferences.

Factors Affecting Mini Yacht Prices

Budgeting for a Mini Yacht

When it comes to purchasing a mini yacht, the cost goes beyond the initial price tag. Before diving into the world of mini yacht ownership , it’s crucial to consider the budget and the ongoing expenses associated with it. By taking these factors into account, you can ensure a smooth sailing experience without breaking the bank.

Mini Yacht Budget Considerations

When creating a budget for your mini yacht, it’s important to account for various costs that come with ownership. Some key considerations include:

  • Fuel: Depending on how often and where you plan to sail, fuel expenses can add up. Researching fuel efficiency and estimating usage based on your intended activities is essential.
  • Maintenance: Like any other vessel, mini yachts require regular maintenance to keep them in optimal condition. This may include routine inspections, mechanical repairs, and cosmetic updates, contributing to the overall cost of ownership.
  • Insurance: Protecting your investment is vital. Obtain insurance coverage that includes liability, property damage, and theft protection to ensure peace of mind while enjoying your mini yacht.
  • Docking Fees: If you plan to keep your mini yacht at a marina, consider monthly or annual docking fees. Prices can vary depending on the location and amenities offered by the marina.
  • Repairs: Unexpected repairs can occur at any time. Setting aside a contingency fund for unforeseen repairs can help mitigate financial stress in such circumstances.

Affordable Mini Yachts

While mini yachts may be associated with luxury, there are affordable options available that still offer a remarkable boating experience. By researching and comparing prices from different sellers, you can find mini yachts that suit your budget without compromising quality or comfort.

Mini Yacht Financing Options

If purchasing a mini yacht outright isn’t feasible, there are financing options available to make your dream a reality. Some common financing solutions for mini yachts include:

  • Marine Financing: Many lenders specialize in marine financing and offer competitive rates and terms tailored to boat purchases. Explore options to find a financing plan that suits your financial situation.
  • Manufacturer Financing: Some mini yacht manufacturers offer their own financing programs, providing convenient and flexible options for buyers.
  • Personal Loans: Depending on your creditworthiness and financial profile, you may qualify for a personal loan to fund your mini yacht purchase.

Remember to thoroughly review the terms and conditions of any financing option, including interest rates, repayment schedules, and additional fees, to ensure you make an informed decision.

Financing Option Pros Cons
Marine Financing Competitive rates and terms tailored to boat purchases. May require a down payment and collateral.
Manufacturer Financing Convenient and flexible options offered directly by the manufacturer. May have limited availability and eligibility requirements.
Personal Loans Can be used for various purposes and may offer flexible repayment terms. Interest rates and eligibility might depend on your creditworthiness.

By carefully considering your budget, researching affordable mini yacht options, and exploring financing possibilities, you can navigate the world of mini yacht ownership confidently. Make sure to create a comprehensive budget that covers all aspects of ownership to enjoy the exhilaration of cruising aboard your very own mini yacht.

Understanding Small Yachts

Defining Small Yachts

Small yachts, also known as mini yachts, are vessels designed to offer the luxury and amenities of a superyacht in a more compact and manageable size. These yachts typically range from 20 to 60 feet in length, which is much more modest when compared to the vast size of superyachts 1 .

Although smaller in size, these yachts still boast a variety of features and can include a range of models, from motor yachts to sailing yachts.

Small Yachts vs. Superyachts

The differences between small yachts and superyachts are not just about size. Superyachts tend to offer more extravagant amenities, such as onboard cinemas, helipads, and multiple swimming pools. On the other hand, small yachts focus on providing a comfortable and luxurious experience while being more budget-friendly and easier to handle 2 .

Here are some key differences between small yachts and superyachts:

Types of Small Yachts

There are two primary types of small yachts: motor yachts and sailing yachts. Each type offers unique features and advantages depending on the owner's preferences and intended use.

  • Motor Yachts : These mini yachts are powered by engines, making them ideal for those who prioritize speed and convenience. Motor yachts often come with more creature comforts and can reach destinations quickly 9 .
  • Sailing Yachts : Sailing yachts rely on wind power, offering a more traditional and eco-friendly sailing experience. They provide a sense of adventure and connection with the sea while still offering a range of comfort features 10 .

Both motor and sailing yachts can be further classified into various subcategories, such as powerboats and sailing catamarans, each with its own unique characteristics.

Design & Construction

Hull Design and Material

When it comes to the design and construction of small yachts, hull design and material selection are of utmost importance. Most small yacht builders, such as Small Trimaran Design , focus on creating efficient and stable hull designs. These can be found in various forms, such as monohulls and multihulls.

Various materials can be used in the construction of yacht hulls. Common options include wood, steel, aluminum, and composites like fiberglass, GRP (Glass Reinforced Plastic), and carbon fiber . The choice of material can have a significant impact on the yacht's performance, durability, and maintenance requirements.

Deck Layout and Features

A well-designed deck layout contributes greatly to the comfort and functionality of a small yacht.

Luxury yacht builders, such as Burgess and Fraser , pay special attention to optimizing deck space for both practical and aesthetic purposes.

Key features often found on small yachts include:

  • Cabins : Depending on the size of the yacht, there may be one or more cabins for sleeping, typically offering a comfortable and cozy environment.
  • Outdoor living : Designers strive to maximize outdoor living spaces, such as lounge areas and sun decks, allowing passengers to enjoy the surroundings and fresh air.
  • Coachroof : A raised section of the deck, the coachroof often houses the entrance to the yacht's interior and provides additional headroom below deck.
  • Interiors : Small yacht interiors can be designed with efficient use of space, incorporating luxury finishes and furniture to create a comfortable and stylish atmosphere.

Some yachts even make use of advanced materials like foam in their construction, which can offer benefits in terms of weight reduction and insulation.

Performance and Handling

Sailing Performance

Small yachts are known for their agility and responsiveness in a variety of sailing conditions.

The lifting keel plays a crucial role in enhancing their performance, allowing them to access shallow waters and engage in creek crawling .

The versatility of these compact vessels allows sailors to enjoy the thrill of sailing on open water, as well as navigating through narrow channels and shallow creeks.

Some popular small yachts with remarkable sailing performance include the Sadler 26 and the Rustler 37 .

The maneuverability and ease of handling make these yachts perfect for both inexperienced and seasoned sailors.

Motor Yachting Efficiency

While small yachts are primarily designed for sailing, many of them can also function as motor yachts when needed. This allows for greater versatility, especially in situations where wind conditions are unfavorable.

In comparison to larger powerboats and cruisers, small motor yachts are generally more fuel-efficient, easier to maneuver, and require less maintenance.

Motor yachting efficiency can be affected by factors such as:

  • Engine type and size
  • Weight distribution

A well-designed small yacht strikes a balance between sailing performance and motor yachting efficiency, making it an excellent choice for those who enjoy the best of both worlds.

The Hobie Cat , for example, is a popular small sailboat that can be easily powered by a small outboard motor when needed.

Living Aboard a Small Yacht

Comfort and Accommodations

Living aboard a small yacht offers a unique and enjoyable lifestyle .

One of the key aspects of a comfortable liveaboard experience is having well-designed interiors and cabins. Most small yachts are designed with efficient use of space in mind, providing comfortable sleeping quarters, ample storage, and functional galleys for meal preparation. Some yachts even feature crew quarters for those who choose to sail with a crew.

It's important that the cabins offer a cozy and pleasant atmosphere, an essential factor when living aboard for extended periods.

When it comes to outdoor living spaces , many small yachts have cleverly designed decks and seating areas for lounging, enjoying the surroundings, or simply watching the sunset.

The yacht's galley should be well-equipped, featuring appliances such as a stove, refrigerator, and sink, making it possible to prepare meals just like at home.

Many small yachts also come with well-appointed saloons that provide additional space for dining, relaxing, and socializing with friends and family.

Entertainment and Social Spaces

Small yachts designers often prioritize creating social spaces, both indoors and outdoors, that cater to various needs.

The saloon is typically the heart of the yacht's interior, offering a comfortable space where everyone can gather for meals, play games, or watch movies.

Outdoor living is another essential aspect of the liveaboard lifestyle. Many small yachts are designed with spacious deck areas for sunbathing, enjoying the fresh air, and taking in the surroundings. These spaces can also be great for hosting outdoor events or simply relaxing with a good book.

The Buying Process

Choosing the Right Model

When purchasing a small yacht, it's essential to focus on choosing the right model that suits your needs.

Major yacht brands like Azimut and Ferretti offer various models with different features and specifications.

Consider factors such as the yacht's size, intended use (coastal cruising, blue-water passage-making, or competitive racing), and your budget.

On average, a small brand-new sailing yacht can cost anywhere from $50,000 to $200,000 or more .

Inspecting a Small Yacht

Before making a purchase, it's crucial to inspect the condition of the small yacht. Factors to consider include:

  • Age: Older yachts may require more maintenance and have outdated features.
  • Model: Different models come with various features and layouts, so choose one that fits your needs.
  • Condition: Check for signs of wear and tear, as well as any repairs or replacements needed.

When searching for small yachts for sale , it's highly recommended to hire a marine surveyor to carry out a thorough inspection of the yacht. They will provide a detailed report on the vessel's condition and recommend any necessary repairs or improvements.

Securing a Purchase

Once you have chosen the right model and inspected the yacht, it's time to negotiate the yacht price and secure the purchase.

It's advisable to involve an experienced yacht broker who can simplify the process, handle negotiations, and aid with post-sale support.

When determining the final purchase price, bear in mind factors like the yacht's age, model, condition, and any additional features.

Maintenance and Upkeep

When owning a small yacht, it's crucial to ensure proper maintenance and upkeep to keep the vessel in great condition.

The age and condition of your yacht will greatly influence the maintenance schedule and tasks required. This section will cover the basics of routine maintenance and necessary repairs and refits.

Routine Maintenance

Regular inspection and maintenance of your yacht's essential systems can help prevent major problems in the long run.

It is important to follow a maintenance schedule and to use a calendar or reminder app to stay on track with your maintenance tasks. Yacht maintenance schedules often include the following key areas:

  • Hull and Engine Inspection: Perform regular checks for any signs of leaks, corrosion, or damage. Clean and repaint the hull periodically to prevent fouling.
  • Electronics, Sails, and Rigging: Inspect all electronics, sails, and rigging for wear and tear or any signs of damage. Replace or repair them as needed.
  • Interior and Exterior Lights: Ensure all lights are functional, and replace any damaged or burned-out bulbs.
  • Cleaning: Regularly clean the yacht's interior and exterior surfaces using gentle cleaning agents and fresh water to prevent dirt and salt buildup.
  • Fuel and Water Tanks: Check and refill fuel and water tanks as needed, and inspect for leaks or contamination.

Repair and Refit

As your small yacht ages, it is essential to address any issues through repair and refit. Here are some common repair and refit tasks to help keep your yacht in the best possible condition:

  • Engine Maintenance: Change oil, internal engine anodes, and check for any issues with engine mounts or fuel tanks. Maintain a proper 55-point skipper's checklist to ensure smooth engine operation.
  • Electrical System: Replace or repair any malfunctioning electrical components. Ensure the wiring is in good condition and perform upgrades as necessary.
  • Sail and Rigging Repair: Check for wear and tear or damaged parts, and replace any components that are no longer in good condition.
  • Upholstery and Interior: Regularly clean, repair, or replace cushions, curtains, carpets, and other fabric materials on board.

Yachting Lifestyle

Destinations and Marinas

The yachting lifestyle offers numerous opportunities for exploring breathtaking destinations and marinas around the world.

Most yacht owners prefer to dock their vessels in well-equipped marinas. These marinas provide high-quality facilities, services, and security.

Some of the top destinations for small yachts include the Mediterranean, the Caribbean, and picturesque coastal towns in Europe and the United States.

The Mediterranean is home to famous yachting hotspots such as the French Riviera, the Greek Islands, and the Amalfi Coast . Meanwhile, the Caribbean offers a tropical paradise with its clear turquoise waters, white sand beaches, and hidden coves .

The Mediterranean

  • French Riviera: Cannes, St. Tropez, Monaco
  • Greek Islands: Santorini, Mykonos, Corfu
  • Amalfi Coast: Positano, Capri, Sorrento

The Caribbean

  • Virgin Islands: St. Thomas, British Virgin Islands
  • Bahamas: Nassau, Exumas
  • British West Indies: Barbados, Grenada, St. Lucia

Yachtsmen can also explore vibrant coastal towns in the United States, such as Newport, Rhode Island , or Annapolis, Maryland. These towns have a rich maritime history and provide access to world-class marinas.

When deciding on a marina, yacht owners should consider factors such as the amenities offered, proximity to popular destinations, and the depth of the harbor. Additionally, safety and environmental standards should not be overlooked.

Community and Events

Yachting is not only about the exploration of beautiful destinations but also about the experience of socializing with fellow yacht enthusiasts.

The yachting lifestyle fosters a strong sense of community, as yacht owners frequently mingle at marinas, yacht clubs, and exclusive events.

Yacht clubs and organizations often host events and regattas, where like-minded individuals can share their passion for sailing and create lasting bonds.

Participating in these events is a fantastic opportunity to expand one's social and professional network within the yachting world.

Notable yachting events include:

  • The Monaco Yacht Show
  • The Antigua Charter Yacht Show
  • The Cannes Yachting Festival
  • The Newport International Boat Show

These events showcase the latest trends and innovations in the yachting industry, providing attendees with both networking and learning experiences.

Charter and Rental Options

Comparing Ownership and Charter

Owning a small yacht can come with many advantages, such as having the freedom to sail whenever and wherever desired. However, ownership also involves significant costs, including maintenance, docking fees, and insurance.

On the other hand, chartering a yacht can offer a more cost-effective, low-commitment option. Yachts for rent are available in various sizes and price ranges, accommodating anything from a luxurious vacation to a simple day trip.

Chartering allows the enjoyment of the yachting experience without the burden of upkeep, while still providing access to luxury and customizable vacations.

There are different types of charters to consider:

  • Bareboat Charter : The individual or group rents the yacht and operates it without a hired skipper or crew. This type is suitable for experienced sailors with the necessary certifications.
  • Skippered Charter : Provides a professional skipper to help navigate the yacht, while the customers handle all other aspects, like provisioning and potentially crewing.
  • Crewed Charter : More common in luxury and mega yachts, this all-inclusive option provides a complete crew, from a skipper and deckhands to a chef and hospitality staff.

Finding Yachts for Rent

In order to find the ideal yacht for a trip, it is crucial to research the available options.

One popular website for browsing yachts is YachtCharterFleet , offering a comprehensive list of luxury superyacht rentals. Their inventory includes everything from small yachts to mega yachts, catering to a wide range of budgets and group sizes.

Another option for discovering yacht charters is the Moorings platform, specializing in private yacht charters and vacations catering to a variety of boating preferences.

For those looking for more personalized sailing vacations, Moorings Crewed Yacht Charters provides customized, all-inclusive travel experiences, allowing guests to enjoy luxury and adventure at their desired destination.

When choosing the right yacht charter, some key factors to consider are the size and type of the yacht, the desired destination, length of the trip, budget, and any specific services or amenities included.

In any case, the options are virtually endless, ensuring that there is a perfect yacht rental available for any occasion.

How much do yachts cost? Let’s look at yacht prices per size.

SELECT SIZE ⇩

Note: We will look at yachts that are a few years old. Very few people buy brand-new yachts as the price comes down a lot after only a few years.

How much is a small yacht? Let’s start at 40 feet length.

40 Foot Yacht Cost

A 40-foot yacht can be found used for around $200,000 and new models can cost as much as a million dollars. There are always lots of used yachts for sale around 40 feet in length, which makes them more attractive to first-time buyers.

Technically, a yacht begins at 23 feet. However, yachts that size will more often be referred to as boats.

A 40-foot yacht is a great option for looking for relative simplicity and plenty of comfort and capability. This size is great for day trips in the Caribbean dedicated to speed boating or simple cruising.

The size remains manageable, but the vessel can be updated with extra living spaces and amenities as desired, with a more affordable price than larger options.

The maintenance prices will remain lower as well.

Make sure you are considering the age of your yacht. Even if it is on the smaller end, it will be more expensive if it is new and custom-built to your wants.

Even if you think a 40-foot yacht is the cheapest option, these small factors make for a sliding price scale.

You might find that a smaller, new, custom yacht is more expensive than an older, simpler, larger yacht. One benefit of an older yacht is that it should have the improvements and equipment that make it comfortable to operate and will not have those additional costs.

For  sailboat prices specifically, check out this article .

Our Pick: Viking 42 Convertible: Cruise and Fish (2014)

Price: $895,000

mini yacht price

  • Cushioned seats
  • Underwater lights
  • Flybridge fiberglass hard-top
  • Recent engine and service
  • Joystick control
  • Cockpit shade with poles, freezer, and step-up box
  • Custom chairs
  • Coach roof overhang to provide shade
  • home theater setup
  • Freshwater wash area
  • Cockpit freezer and drink box
  • Forward-facing viewing windows in deckhouse

Here’s a great example of a yacht with differing ages and year models. It has twin diesel engines, 600 hp each, and cruise at 35 mph (pretty fast!).

Yacht Price Examples for Three Other 40-50 Foot

  • 42-foot Grand Banks 42 Classic; trawler-cruiser style yacht; twin diesel, 350 hp each, cruising speed is 13 mph. Price: $370,000 for 2004; $124,500 for 1986; older ones for less
  • 45-foot Sea Ray 450 Sundancer or Sedan Bridge; single or twin diesel, about 1,000 hp total; cruising speed about 26 mph Price: $472,000 for 2012 twin-engine
  • 41-foot Back Cove Downeast; single diesel 715 hp; cruising speed is 26 mph Price: $619,000 for 2016

50 Foot Yacht Cost

50-foot yachts are  normally owner-operated, so you wouldn’t need to pay for a crew. Now we are around the size of 2-bedroom yachts.

They can provide more living space giving the owner flexibility for more guests and making it a more permanent residential option. With more space comes the opportunity to install more amenities as well.

The biggest difference between the 40-foot vessel and the 50-foot is the accommodations.

Expect three-cabin layouts, which give plenty of space for rest. The opportunity to create guest rooms, owners’ suite, and entertainment spaces are better with these yachts.

Our Pick: Hatteras GT54 Convertible Sportfish

mini yacht price

The price for the 2017 model of this used yacht starts at $2,249,000.

This yacht is 53′ 10″ long and weighs 75,000 pounds! It has twin diesel engines, 1,300 hp each, cruising speed of 35 mph.

It has a 1200-gallon fuel capacity with three staterooms. It sleeps up to 6 people, so it is perfect for entertaining without being so large to the point where maintenance becomes very difficult. It is known for its great propulsion rates and is very smooth and agile.

It specializes as a fishing boat but allows plenty of room for guests. In addition to the three staterooms, it has a large salon deck, a spacious galley, and plenty of indoor and outdoor seating.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 50 Foot

  • 51-foot Azimut Magellano 50; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 425 hp each, cruising speed 16 mph Price: $670,760 for 2013
  • 52-foot Carver C52 Command Bridge; twin diesel engines, 600 hp each; cruising speed 18- 26 mph Price: $1,149,000 for 2017; $1,750,00 for 2021 with bow thrusters, gyro-stabilizer

How much is a large yacht? Let’s  step up to 60 foot.

60 Foot Yacht Cost

Now we’re looking at 2-bedroom yacht prices. A yacht in this range approaches the upper end of the owner/operator criteria.

This means that owners need to decide whether they can handle this size yacht on their own or if they need to hire outside help from a crew.

If you’re thinking of buying a boat this size, the cost may not be an issue, but understand that adding crew members adds substantial extra expenses! Crew salaries start at around $3K /mth for junior members and $10K for captains and experienced crew members.

This size is great for longer travels beyond day trips and adds more and more space for extra amenities. Hosting guests becomes easier.

Here are some examples:

Our Pick: Hatteras M60

mini yacht price

The average base price for this model is around $2,995,000.

The Hatteras M60 is great for someone who wants the luxury of a larger yacht but still wants to be an owner-operator. The deck’s layout below and above is spacious, with a large salon and a full master suite. It can be customized to order with hardwood floors or specific carpeting and amenities like TVs, a bar, a full kitchen, etc. It is a motor yacht, meant for pleasure cruising.

It has twin diesel engines, 1135 hp each; cruising speed is 28 mph.

Yacht Price Examples for Two Other 60 Foot

  • 64-foot Schaefer 640; express cruiser; twin diesel engines, 625 hp each; cruising speed 25 mph Price: $1,299,000 for 2017
  • 60-foot Sunreef 62 Sailing Catamaran; twin diesel engines 110 hp each; cruising speed 10 mph Price: $990,000 for 2009

70 Foot Yacht Cost

We’re now looking at 3-bedroom yachts. Once you reach this size yacht, it is almost guaranteed you will need a crew to help operate it. A crewed yacht is very different from an owner-operated yacht.

This is just shy of the superyacht category, so if you settle on this size, know you are almost there!

As previously mentioned, as the yacht size gets larger, so do the number of factors that make the purchase more layered and complex.

When yachts reach this size, the interior layout begins to change more drastically. They often have a spacious main deck perfect for dining and entertaining guests, whereas below, the yacht would likely have four or more cabins and crew quarters.

With more rooms comes more cost and more opportunity to customize the space to make it your own.

Here are some great options for this size:

Our Pick: Hatteras GT70 Convertible Sportfish

The 2017 GT70 model runs around $4,500,000, but keep in mind the extra costs of maintenance, furnishing, and a cabin crew to help it run. It’s great for a long vacation and far-away destinations.

The GT70 convertible sportfish is known for its speed and agility, and high propulsion power. It has twin diesel engines, 1900 hp each; cruising speed over 30 mph.

It is 70′ 6″ with 2,140-gallon fuel capacity. The inside is lavish, with a galley, a huge salon, and five staterooms.

  • 75-foot Hatteras Motor Yacht; sport cruiser; twin diesel, 1800 hp each; cruising speed 28 mph. Price: $4,375,000 for 2017
  • 74-foot Ocean Alexander Motoryacht; twin diesel, 1150 hp each; cruising speed 24 mph. Price: $1,895,000 for 2011

100 Foot Yacht Costs (and up):

You are officially in the superyacht range.

These yachts come in all styles and shapes, allowing for cruising along coastlines or focusing on watercraft and speed boating.

Since this is likely the peak size boat for practical use, you can expect a lot of additional costs for hiring a crew, maintenance, docking, as well as stocking your boat full of amenities.

You’re likely to spend the bulk of your costs furnishing this size boat as bigger yachts typically are sold without furniture. The previous owner will want to hold on to designer furniture and other expensive interior.

It has room for water toys and other gadgets, with a layout that keeps them purposefully hidden from the outside world. It has a 12-knot cruising speed and 16-knot max speed,

Other 100+ Feet Yachts Price Examples

  • 98′ 5″ AB 100 Price: $8,843,260 for 2018
  • 161′ 04″ Acico Nassima Price: $17,933,000 for 2012

How Much is Yacht Insurance?

Insurance on a yacht is around 1% of the purchase price per year. It can go higher if you have lots of expensive designer furniture. This can add up over the years. It’s often cheaper to insure a sailing yacht but the price range is still within the 0.7-1.3%.

What Other Expenses Do Yacht Owners Face?

Harbor fees is another expense for yacht owners. It’s also a yearly fee that varies but as a rule of thumb, you can expect to pay around $100 per foot per year, depending on how popular the marina is. You will also have to be on a waitlist if you want a good location.

How Much Does a Luxury Yacht Cost?

A super yacht fall under the category of “luxury yachts” or “mega-yachts”.

The world’s largest private vessel belongs to the Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates, Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan’s Azzam. It is 590 feet long and costs $600 million to build!

It is outliers like these that increase the price average for yacht owners, perhaps scaring potential owners when they start their research.

As a luxury yacht price guide, however, we need to look at averages.

Currently, the average superyacht costs $275 million. This does not even account for maintenance costs, either.

Superyachts are large and luxurious, needing a professional crew to help them run. They are designed to emphasize comfort, speed, and longer expeditions – depending on the yacht builders.

They might have:

  • swimming pools,
  • water toys,
  • diving and fishing poles,
  • fully furnished rooms,
  • helicopter landing pads,
  • and smaller support vessels

Just to name a few amenities. They are truly the epitome of the elite.

What Size Boat is Considered a Yacht?

The normal yacht length starts at around 23 feet, and can extend hundreds of feet.  If the boat meets 23 feet, it can be considered a yacht.

A boat does not need luxury features to be considered a yacht.

It can be minimal and stripped of the “extra” stuff to fall into the yacht category, so long as it meets the size and length criteria.

11 Things to Consider Before You Purchase

When making this purchase, the yacht size you buy needs to reflect what you hope to get out of the vessel.

Some important questions to ask yourself before you buy are:

  • What does your perfect day on the water look like?
  • How long will your average day on the water be?
  • Will it be more boating/watercraft focused or long cruise focused?
  • Will you use the yacht for fishing?
  • Will you be on the yacht every day of the week or just on weekends?
  • How many people do you hope to fit on the yacht?
  • Do you plan to stay on the yacht overnight?
  • Where will you dock the yacht?
  • How much boating experience do you have?
  • How fast do you want the yacht to go?
  • How important is it to have extra amenities like furnished rooms, water toys, electronics, etc.?

These questions will guide you to understand the size you really need and will be able to realistically maintain versus what your most ideal yacht would look like.

When Do You Need a Full-Time Crew?

At length over 50 or 60 feet, you may need a full-time captain or crew.

A full-time crew person will be needed to keep all the varnished woodwork looking good and all the little things maintained.

Sometimes, you must be honest with yourself about what you want and what you actually need. Be self-aware about your abilities (or lack thereof) in taking care of a specific size yacht.

If you don’t know much about boats and navigation, you will need more help to use your vessel.

Hopefully, this comprehensive guide gives you a good starting point as you begin your yacht price research process.

Important Things to Consider As Well

Although there are many factors to consider when understanding a yacht’s prices, it is an exciting purchase nonetheless and should be enjoyed as much as possible.

At the end of your research, you’ll be the owner of a beautiful yacht you can use for leisure, cruising, sports craft, fishing, or all of the above.

Although this article is a good starting point, we would also recommend getting in touch with a  yacht broker who can help you find your best fit , model, year, and the price is given your personal budget.

They are great sources of knowledge in addition to personal research.

Make sure you are as patient as possible in this process to make sure you are covering all your bases, but most importantly, enjoy the process!

Here’s How Much Yachts Cost on Average:

Yachts start around $300,000 for smaller 40-foot models and can go as high as several hundred million dollars for superyachts.

These are the main contributing factors to the price of a yacht:

  • The size of the yacht
  • The age of the yacht
  • The brand and  type of yacht

In general, the larger the yacht is, the more important the quality of the build becomes.

Also, potential owners need to understand the cruising speed and propulsion of different yachts.

The yacht type is also broken down into two categories:

  • Mediterranean Style Open style expresses yacht with maximum space for sun, little-to-no shade on the deck.
  • Hard-top express Semi-enclosed or fully-enclosed space on deck for the operator
  • Flybridge yachts

An express yacht is often referred to interchangeably as an  express cruiser  or  sports cruiser .

It has a single deck above the hull with a living space below.

They are much sleeker, too.

A flybridge yacht is often referred to as a sedan bridge or sport bridge, and it is typically used for fishing. It has additional space above the main deck.

Since the flybridge area has more space on the second deck, the main deck is normally made up of enclosed spaces and rooms.

It can have an open-air layout but can also have a hard-top.

How Much Does It Cost To Buy A Yacht?

By Rob Bowman | Posted On Aug 09, 2021 Updated On Dec 12, 2023

If you're new to owning a boat and want to experience the luxury lifestyle, buying a yacht is the perfect way to indulge yourself while also creating unforgettable memories on the water. From anchoring at a secluded island in the Caribbean to cruising the coastline enjoying the fall colors, yacht ownership opens up limitless possibilities to explore the beauty of Mother Nature. It can also create quite the adrenaline rush if a sportfishing boat is more your style. There are many benefits to hiring a professional yacht broker when you plan on buying your first yacht including having someone on your side when evaluating the right price, for the right vessel.

So how much does it cost to buy a yacht on average? In 2021, the average selling price of a yacht is approximately $640,000, with prices ranging from $300,000 to over $15,000,000. This average selling price represents all pre-owned boats from 40-feet to 100-feet, power (not sail), and sold in the Southeastern United States, including the large Florida market. The data collected for this sales price was from the boating industry's MLS system.

This 50-foot flybridge yacht (seen below) was sold around the average selling price mentioned above and is a good example of what you can expect when spending over $500k . It features several bedrooms for overnight trips, a galley, a nice flybridge seating area, and a lot of comforts you would find at home.

50-foot flybridge yacht sold

A yacht can mean vastly different things to different people depending on their style of boating, where they live, what they plan to do on the boat, and the amount of equipment they choose. A 50-foot yacht can vary in price by several hundred thousand dollars depending on how new it is, its engines, brand, and amenities. Having a conversation about your needs and budget with a professional yacht broker can answer all of these questions and take the guesswork out of your search.

While the average price of a yacht sold in the Southeast this year is $640,000, buyers can find yachts for less if they are willing to go a bit older and/or a bit smaller.

  • According to the list of 2021 sold boats, the average selling price for yachts between 40 and 50 feet was $329,000.
  • Yachts under 40 feet are generally called cruising boats and can still feature a lot of the same amenities found on larger vessels.
  • How much does a small yacht cost? Examples of active boats on the market right now show a sizeable difference in price depending on the length and year. For example, a 2021 40-foot Intrepid boat is listed for over $800,000 , while a 2011 Intrepid 40 is listed for under $400,000 .

(Seen below: This Cabo 40 would be considered a smaller yacht and is listed for under $375,000.)

40-foot cabo yacht for sale

The larger, newer, and more extravagant yachts can cost $5 million and higher. Forbes.com identifies a superyacht as a vessel ranging from "79 feet to more than 590 feet in length." The average selling price in 2021 for yachts over 100-feet, according to the industry MLS database, came in at just under $1 million. Of course, there were several superyachts that were between $10 million and $50 million on the list.

A prime example of a superyacht would be " ANTITHESIS ", a Horizon Yachts 136 that had an asking price of $7,990,000 at the time of sale. This superyacht featured 5 luxury staterooms, a pilothouse with full electronics suite, a jacuzzi, sauna, 2 water-makers, 2 generators, and a lot more top-end equipment. Yacht owners looking to cruise long distances or possibly turn the vessel into a yacht charter business would be interested in a boat of this stature.

( Seen below: This Horizon 136 required massive engines that gave it a range of over 1,400 nautical miles. )

The cost of a yacht is not the only cost to consider. Purchasing your new boat is the largest upfront expense, however, there are also the costs of owning a yacht that need to be considered. This is again where hiring an experienced, professional yacht broker can really pay dividends and take a lot of the stress out of the process. Things like insurance, storage, routine maintenance, captain and crew salaries, all need to be factored in to your expectations. We dive into this a bit more in our articles Why Are Boats So Expensive? and What Should I Spend On A Yacht?

Despite the potentially high cost of yacht ownership, it is still an excellent investment in your well-being and will bring countless joyful memories. There is no other recreation in the world that brings families and friends together, while enjoying the wonders of the ocean.

( Seen below: CHIMERA is a 60-foot Hinckley sailing yacht listed for over $1 million. )

While the purchase of sailboats still account for less than 10% of all boats sold, sailing is still a popular past-time which has some very passionate enthusiasts. According to Trade Only Today , in 2019 and 2020 there were more than 1,100 sailboats sold in the United States. As you begin to figure out exactly what type of boating you want to enjoy, as well to learn the advantages and disadvantages of different boat types, you can begin to narrow down the selection process.

Below is the average cost to purchase a small yacht broken out by type :

  • Sailboats Over 40': $193,000
  • Sailing Catamarans - All Sizes: $361,000
  • Power Catamarans - All Sizes: $304,247
  • Downeast Yachts - Over 35': $532,240
  • Sport Fishing Yachts - Over 40' and in Southeast: $815,500

With so many factors to determine how much it costs to buy a yacht and maintain it, it is in the best interest of boat buyers of this magnitude to speak with a certified professional yacht broker. "Pricing a yacht in this market can be a difficult thing," said Brian T. Franc , CPYB and manager of United's Emerald Coast Division. "Pre-owned prices are definitely inflated due to lack of inventory, but there are still some great opportunities if you are fast and have someone watching the market daily on your behalf. As someone who has been in the yacht brokerage industry for almost 30 years, I can tell you that working with a professional makes a difference. We can tell almost immediately whether a boat is over-priced, what it will likely sell for, and whether or not it is the right boat for your needs.

Small motor yachts for sale

Arcon Yachts has a wide range of small yachts for sale. Small yacht concept refers to motor vessels with a hull under 14 m. Starting from 9 m boats are becoming comfortable and spacious reaching more performance of a bigger yacht. There's enough space for a cabin and a small galley onboard. Open areas are big enough for sunbathing zones. At this moment we start to call them small yachts rather than motor boats.

Small yachts are diverse. In this category you can find cruisers, cabin boats,  fishing boats, bowriders, ski boats, runabouts, aluminium yachts.

Strong points of the small yachts are high mobility, most attractive price, easy storing during the off-season. Normally it's easy to launch them by yourself and to move on tow around the country. Less formalities while using the mini yachts is always a pleasure. And while on water there are no limits for fun and relax. That is why the small yachts are always a good option for those who like to move a lot, who treasure their freedom and for the moment prefer not to spend too much on a yacht.

With Arcon Yachts it's more than easy to buy a small yacht, either new or brokerage, in Russia or in any other region. After all the years in the industry we have good relationship with all the major brands and companies who might be of use while small yachts sale.

How Much Does a Yacht Cost?

11th jul 2023 by samantha wilson.

Rightboat logo

We hear the question, “How much does a yacht cost?” on a regular basis, and it’s a difficult one to answer. Much the same as with houses, the prices vary in a surprising way depending on size, style, age, and finish (not to mention location). We’re talking millions of dollars in price difference for yachts, as well, because there are yachts of many different sizes with all the same variations. But first, let’s tackle the more fundamental question, “What is a yacht?’

What Classifies as a Yacht?

To begin with, a yacht can be a sailing yacht or a motor-powered yacht. Merriam-Webster Dictionary defines it as “any of various recreational watercraft: such as a) a sailboat used for racing; b) a large usually motor-drive craft used for pleasure cruising.” Size is not technically part of the definition, but in modern practice, size has a whole lot to do with it.

Many in the industry classify a boat as a ‘yacht’ from 40 feet up to 70 feet, although there are others who will include vessels as short as 33 feet. Not too many years ago, yachts as small as 80 feet (24 meters) were considered superyachts, but with the proliferation of much larger yachts, 130 feet (40 meters) is a more common yardstick. Beyond that are megayachts, variously defined as beginning at 165 feet (50 meters) or 200 feet (60 meters).

The point is, there are no hard-and-fast rules, and what may be one person’s pretty little 20-foot sailboat may be another’s luxury sailing yacht. And any shiny, private vessel 40 feet and up will be called a yacht by almost everyone.

While size is the main determining factor in labeling boats as yachts, amenities aboard also play a role. For example, yachts frequently have cabins and heads below allowing for overnight stays, as well as a galley, and plenty of deck space for leisure.

The term ‘yacht’ has become synonymous with luxury, especially with the boom in huge superyachts across the world. But a yacht doesn’t have to be fancy. A sprightly 30-foot trawler yacht might look to some like a luxury palace, but Jeff Bezos and the guests aboard his brand new $500 million sailing yacht Koru would probably see it differently.

Cost of Buying a Yacht

Looking for an average price across all types of yachts isn’t helpful either, with sizes of yachts varying from 30 to 300 feet. And that doesn’t take into account whether a boat is new or used.  Broadly speaking, in the United States you can often buy a small used sailing yacht for $15,000 or less, and you can expect that figure to go up to $50,000 or $100,000 for a small motor yacht. A larger motor yacht, or even a new 40-foot day boat, can easily run up to $1 million or more. Superyachts, of course, will cost multiple millions of dollars.

Cost of Owning a Yacht

The cost of owning a yacht goes far beyond the initial purchase price, and even if you’re in the market for a small yacht, you’ll need to factor in the annual costs which include:

  • Marina fees: These will vary depending on your location and the size of the boat. Expect to pay from $5,000 for a yacht at the smallest end of the scale up to tens of thousands for larger yachts.
  • Insurance: As a general rule, you can expect to pay around 0.5 percent of the value of the boat annually. Check out our guide to boat insurance for more information.
  • Maintenance and repairs: As a rough estimation you can expect to spend around 10 percent of the value of the boat on upkeep each year. This might be lower if it’s a new yacht.
  • Fuel: This will vary depending on how far you cruise and how large the yacht is.
  • Crew: Yachts up to 70 or 80 feet often don’t require a crew, but the larger the yacht, the more crew it will need. Crew salaries range from $3,200 per month for junior crew to $10,500 per month for captains and chief engineers. In general, a yacht of 80 to 100 feet in size will require a crew of between two and eight, while yachts between 100 to 200 feet will require between 8 and 20 crew members.
  • Depreciation: Brand new boats depreciate the most and the quickest, with most depreciating by 40 to 50 percent of their initial price over the first 8 to 10 years.

Types of Yachts per Cost

When we talk about yachts and their values, we usually refer mostly to the length of the yacht as that tends to be the identifying factor, but the style, engine size, and finish also play a huge role in determining how much they cost. Here we take a look at the average price differences between new and used yachts in the United States at varying sizes.

How much is a small yacht? (25 to 40 feet)

A small yacht around 40 feet (often referred to as a cabin cruiser) is often considered an entry-level yacht, but a big step up from much smaller day boats. These are likely to have cabins, heads, and a small galley, and most offer the chance to spend weekends onboard. Prices will vary widely depending on whether it’s a used or new boat, and depending on the model, finish, and engines. New and recent-model yachts around 38 to 40 feet may cost anywhere from $250,000 to over $1 million, while the price of older models is often substantially lower. The average price in the United States for all new and used yachts sold between 36 feet to 45 feet was $238,000 according to the Boats Group Market Index of 2022.

When we’re looking at smaller yachts around 25 to 30 feet, these are unlikely to have cabins and so are considered day cruisers. Motor cruisers between 25 and 30 feet range from $70,000 for an almost-new model to well over $100,000 for a brand new one. Of course, yachts with smaller engines and simpler layouts will have considerably lower price tags, but those with premium finish and accommodations may cost much more—for example, a new Ranger 29 (pocket trawler) starts at over $350,000. See our guide to the different types of boats for a better understanding of what is available and what might be right for you.

How much is a medium-sized yacht? (40 to 70 feet)

Mid-sized yachts that fall within the 40- to 70-foot category vary in price from around $250,000 to well beyond $4 million, a figure that depends on the size, model, finish, engines, and extras, as well as whether it’s a brand new boat or used. According to the Boats Group Market Index of 2022, the average yacht price in the United States of vessels 46 to 55 feet was $467,899 with 2,273 boats sold, while the average price for yachts in the 56 to 79 foot category was $1.18m with 997 sold in 2022.

Yacht prices vary a lot depending on whether the yacht is new or used. As an example, the base price for a new Viking 58 is $4.1 million, a three-year-old model can be purchased for $3.5 million for, and a 10-year-old model for $600,000. Check out our new and used luxury yachts for sale on Rightboat for more comparisons.

woman on a yacht

How much is a sailing yacht?

Long before the combustion engine was invented, yachts (or sailboats) graced our oceans for centuries. While these days we tend to think of yachts as the luxurious motor vessels that far outnumber their sailing counterparts, sailing yachts have their own class. As we’ve seen with motor yachts, the size, age, and finish of a sailing yacht will determine the price tag, with prices ranging from $5,000 to several million dollars—and much more for superyachts. The largest sailing yacht in the world is Sailing Yacht A , which cost an estimated $600 million and measures 470 feet in overall length.

When referring to larger sailing yachts—and by larger we are talking about 100-foot yacht prices—there is a “rule of thumb” estimate of $1 million per 3 feet in length. So a 100-foot yacht may cost in the region of $30 million. But sliding back down the length ladder, it’s possible to pick up a small, used sailing yacht for a fraction of that. A 55-foot yacht that has been sailing for a few years may sell for around $700,000, whereas a new one could easily retail for $2 million or more. An older (30 to 40 years) sailing yacht of 30 to 35 feet might cost only about $25,000 while a brand new one might cost $250,000 and more. See what you can get for your money with our sailing yachts for sale on Rightboat.

How much is a luxury yacht or superyacht?

Superyachts are some of the most luxurious vessels on the sea, and they don’t come cheap. As mentioned, yachts above 78 feet (24 meters) are accepted by many as superyachts; when they range up over 165 or 200 feet, some in the industry refer to them as megayachts. This term is still debated in some quarters, so you may hear yachts over 300 feet referred to as superyachts too.

Superyachts require a full time crew to manage them, and this adds considerably to the overall cost of running such a large vessel. Given that, how much does a superyacht cost? The costs vary, with some estimates of up to $1 million per foot of length to build a new top-of-the-line custom superyacht. Used superyachts will cost less than a new build, and you may be able to buy a 10-year-old, 90-foot superyacht for around $2.5 million—although most owners will engage in a significant and costly refit every 10 years. Models less than five years old will be closer to the $4 million mark, while a brand new one will cost around $9 million. Check out our listings for superyachts for sale all across the world.

How much is a megayacht?

When we reach megayacht status, prices skyrocket along with the length of the vessels and the volume of the interiors. The largest megayacht in the world is currently Azzam, 590 feet long at a cost of $600 million to build. Yachts in this class are the most luxurious in the world, and feature large swimming pools, helicopter pads, huge guest and crew accommodations, beach clubs, and much more. The upkeep of vessels of this size can run to $20 million or more for the crew fees, fuel, mooring fees, insurance, food, and maintenance. If you want to set eyes on the world’s most astounding superyachts and megayachts check out our superyacht travel guide to where you might find them, or use our search to discover megayachts for sale .

For many yacht owners, the solution to finding more space aboard for friends and family is summed up by that immortal line by Chief Brody in Jaws: “You’re gonna need a bigger boat.”

Until now, bigger has typically meant longer. But that’s quickly changing as more and more builders are creating interior volume by going wider and taller. For disrupter builder Wally Yachts and its polarizing new Wallywhy 150—which refers to its internal volume rather than the boat’s length—the quirky design is said to deliver 50 percent more space than more traditional 78-footers.

Other builders like Princess have been in the game since 2021. Its X95 first appeared several years ago, effectively throwing down the gauntlet as a way forward for sub-100-foot yachts to supersize both interior and exterior volumes.

Since then, many other builders of small superyachts have jumped on board, with designs that typically have somewhat bloated profiles, far-forward main suites, and open transoms—features all designed to maximize space but minimize length.

Here are 10 new yachts 100 feet and under that are breaking the mold in an attempt to dominate the nautical space race.

<p>It’s no wonder that disrupter Italian builder Wally—now part of the Ferretti Group—calls its latest head-turner a “spaceship.” Claiming up to 50 percent more space than comparable 78-footers, the 150 (named after interior volume rather than length) has standout features like a main salon with over eight feet of headroom, and a beam of more than 22 feet. The pragmatic design includes a one-level main deck attached to an open rear cockpit that offers easy access to the water. Its most noteworthy feature is the rule-breaking, full-beam master suite tucked into the bow on the main deck. It has wraparound glass—stretching all the way around the bow—for panorama-like views from the main bedroom. Priced from about $6.7 million.</p>

<p>Short for Ultra High Volume, this new Turkish-built pocket superyacht is a sistership to Lazzara’s UHV 100 and 125 models. The newest Lazzara boasts an impressive 2,153 square feet of interior space in its 87-foot length. Arguably, the boat is not pretty in a classic sense. The towering hull sides, blunt, plumb bow, and dark-tinted glass make it look more like a dinner cruiser than a mini-superyacht. But the interior space is astonishing, from the cavernous Sky Lounge, with its floor-to-ceiling windows, to the salon with a separate, chandelier-lit dining area and chef’s galley. With a fuel capacity of 3,000 gals, the twin 1,000 hp Volvo D13s deliver a top speed of 16 knots. The boat also has transatlantic range. Base price starts at about $10.9 million.</p>

<p>Movie nights under the stars should have a whole new appeal aboard UK builder Sunseeker’s brand-new 98-footer. Lie back on the yacht’s extra-wide foredeck sunpad and watch the latest blockbuster on a 140-inch screen with laser projection. Or, if you’re the lucky owner, stargaze from your private terrace tucked away in the bow, just steps from the full-beam main-deck master suite, with atrium-style glass sliding doors. One of the best innovations here is the wide, uninterrupted walkway around the entire top deck, which provides safe, easy access from the flybridge to the forward entertaining space. With its twin 2,600 hp V16 MTU diesels, top speed is an impressive 29 knots. Priced from about $10.5 million.</p>

<p>For its brand-new Grande 26M compact superyacht, Italian builder Azimut has gone extra wide to create massive interior and exterior spaces. Spatial highlights include a full-width flybridge that’s almost 20 feet across and close to 40 feet long, and a foredeck entertaining area that seems more like an outdoor patio. The Alberto Mancini-styled go-fast cruiser is crammed with space-enhancing innovations, such as a teak-decked garage door that, at the touch of a button, hinges upwards to extend the rear cockpit by almost five feet. New ZF pod drives coupled to the yacht’s twin 1,650 hp MAN V12 diesels also save space. It is priced from about $6.2 million.</p>

<p>As we said during our <a href="https://robbreport.com/motors/marine/on-superyacht-breaks-all-the-rules-1234606462/">2021 tour</a> of Britain’s Princess Yachts’ tri-deck X95 “When it comes to the polarizing, head-spinning design, there are no half-measures, no in-betweens. You either love it. Or loathe it.” But what those eye-popping lines hide is perhaps the most spacious 95-foot luxury cruiser in the category. Reckoned to be some 40 percent roomier than cruisers with the same length, the X95 has stretch-out accommodations for up to 10 in five cabins and living spaces that rival most apartments. The flybridge covers almost the entire length of the yacht. The 100 is also fast, with twin 1,990 hp MAN V12s delivering a top speed of 23 knots. Prices start at about $12 million.</p>

<p>This broad-beamed 96-footer is from the Italian builder Extra Yachts, which is part of the Palumbo Superyachts Group. While it’s called the Triplex, there are actually four levels if you include the cozy upper sundeck with its outdoor kitchen, dining area and oversized sunpads. The exterior comes courtesy of Italian designer Francesco Guida, while interiors are by Milan-based Hot Labs. Both teams have made the most of the yacht’s class-leading 25-foot beam. Notable features include a vast full-beam master on the main level and an upper salon dedicated entirely to dining, with a table for 10, an open chef’s galley and an adjoining outdoor bar. Twin Volvo IPS1350s deliver a 16.5-knot top speed. Priced from $12 million.</p>

<p>This Sunreef power catamaran’s beam spans a staggering 44 feet, offering the kind of interior and exterior spaces you only get with superyachts twice the length. Every element of the yacht is XXL-size—from the massive hydraulic swim platform to the full-width flybridge that covers almost 1,000 square feet. Down in the salon is a huge 11-seat U-shaped bar that would delight any mixologist. The five staterooms in the twin hulls have space for 10. A pair of 1,300 hp MAN V8 diesels delivers a six-knot top speed. It is priced from about $15.3 million.</p>

<p>In Italian, the word “navetta” translates to “little ship.” Which is a perfect description for Absolute’s new 75-foot fast cruiser. It’s an evolution of the strong-selling Navetta 73 but with nearly two feet of extra length. The yacht’s expansive interior volumes will remain the same, with features like a forward master stateroom on its own level that has a private entrance steps away from the main salon. <p>Cross a spacious Miami high-rise penthouse with a Canyon Ranch spa and the result could be this new 96-foot superyacht from Italian builder Arcadia. Boasting a remarkable 4,300 square feet of total living space, there’s room for 12 guests and five crew. And the living spaces even expand, courtesy of fold-down terraces in the main salon and on the rear deck. But the yacht’s focus on wellness and healthy living sets it apart. That expansive, teak-decked foredeck, spanning over 500 square feet, is perfect for yoga sessions or meditation, while the cockpit and beach club offer another 1,000 square feet of social space. <p>Think of it as offering pace, with space. Turkish yard Numarine has been building its bold 85-foot 26XP explorer style mini-superyacht since 2018, but later this year, it will launch the U.S.-focused 26XP Fast. Instead of slow-churning 435 hp diesels and nine-knot cruising, it’s bolting-in a pair of mighty 1,800 hp MAN V12s and modifying the hull to deliver a top speed of 31 knots. What hasn’t changed is the XP’s cavernous interior and expensive deck space. Take the top-deck flybridge which, thanks to the yacht’s 21-foot beam and far-forward helm, spans over 700 square feet. That space will include a dining table for eight, a full outdoor kitchen, and more lounges than a Saint-Tropez beach bar. Prices start from $6.95 million.</p>

The World’s Most Expensive Yachts—Including Some That Cost Billions

By Brett Berk

most expensive yachts

Though superyachts are already among the most costly consumer items available, the prices of the most expensive yachts in the world are still astounding. In recent decades, those with money to burn have settled on these floating palaces as an ideal locus for demonstrating their prosperity, and, as such, the global luxury yacht industry is undergoing a golden age. The world’s überwealthy think of their motor yachts as toys, and they’re constantly trying to outdo each other in scale, design, amenities, materials, and sheer profligacy.

Knowing this, what features does it take to own one of the most expensive yachts in existence? And how much do these opulent vessels actually cost? To that end, AD has compiled a list of the five priciest superyachts currently out on the water. As with many things connected to the very wealthy, details are shrouded in secrecy—often intentionally—to shield the assets from taxation or seizure, or to protect privacy.

Below, dive into the five reportedly most expensive yachts in the world.

5. Dubai ($400 million)

Image may contain Transportation Vehicle Yacht and Boat

This 531-foot yacht is reportedly owned by United Arab Emirates Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Ruler of Dubai. Though it was originally planned for another Middle Eastern potentate, Prince Jefri Bolkiah of Brunei, he suddenly voided the contract in 2001. With exteriors designed by Andrew Winch and interiors by Platinum Yachts, this German-built Blohm + Voss vessel features several Jacuzzis, a pool inlaid with handmade mosaic tiles that is reportedly large enough to hold 115 people, a circular staircase, a discotheque with an appropriately sized dance floor, squash courts, a movie theater, a dining room for 90 guests (the other 25 presumably have to eat in the pool?), a helipad, and a submarine.

4. Topaz ($527 million)

most expensive yacht

Resembling a stealth bomber, this 483-foot ship is reportedly owned by Russian fertilizer and coal oligarch Andrey Melnichenko. With exteriors by Tim Heywood Design Ltd. and interior designs by Terence Disdale Design, this German-built Lürssen Yacht features a 2,500-square-foot primary bedroom, six guest suites (with moveable walls so they can be transformed into four grand staterooms), glassware and tableware fashioned from French crystal, a helicopter hangar, a 30-foot speedboat tender, and three swimming pools, including one with a glass-bottom dangling menacingly above a disco.

3. Azzam ($600 million)

most expensive yachts

This 590-foot ship is currently thought to be the largest private yacht in the world and one of the fastest, with a top speed of 35 miles per hour. To achieve this immense scale and speed, it required a pair of gas turbines and two stratospherically potent diesel engines, rendering it very difficult to build. It is reportedly owned by a member of the royal family of the UAE, Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan. With exteriors by Nauta Yacht and interiors by French decorator Cristophe Leoni, this yacht was also built by Lürssen in Germany. The vessel is set apart by its early 19th-century Empire-style veneered furniture, as well as its state-of-the-art security systems, including a fully bulletproof primary suite and a high-tech missile deterrence capabilities.

2. Eclipse ($1.5 billion)

most expensive yachts

In addition to being the second-costliest, this 533-footer is thought to be the world’s second-largest private yacht. Owned by Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich , the ship was claimed to be located in Turkey and may be impounded as part of the United Kingdom’s sanctions against Russia. Designed by Terry Disdale and built by Blohm + Voss, it features two-dozen guest cabins, two swimming pools, two helipads, and multiple hot tubs. For privacy and security reasons, it hosts a missile detection system, bulletproof windows in the primary bedroom and on the bridge, an anti-paparazzi shield, and, when all of that fails, a mini-submarine that can take a few VIPs 164 feet under the ocean’s surface.

1. History Supreme ($4.8 billion)

History Supreme has never actually been seen in a major port, and rumors suggest that the yacht may not be real and instead just a publicity stunt. Reportedly owned by Malaysia’s richest man, Robert Kuok, and designed by Stuart Hughes in the UK, the yacht is only a paltry 100 feet long. Its worth is said to be derived from its lavish finishes, including a statue constructed from genuine Tyrannosaurus rex bones, a liquor bottle embedded with an 18.5-carat diamond, and a primary bedroom with one wall made from meteorite and another from a 24-karat gold Aquavista Panoramic Wall Aquarium. If you see it somewhere, let us know.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much is Jeff Bezos’s yacht?

Most Expensive Yachts

This is why people like Amazon founder Jeff Bezos work to keep their yachts out of the public eye. Though we are not including Jeff Bezos’s yacht, Koru (Maori for “coil”), in this list because it is a sailing yacht and thus excluded from the realm of these motor yachts, it created controversy in the Netherlands when its presence became known. Jeff Bezos’s abided the $500 million price tag of Oceanco, the Dutch custom yacht builder, to create the 417-foot megayacht. But when the company, at Bezos’s behest, requested that a local bridge be dismantled to make way for its gigantic mast on its journey from the shipyard, public sentiment turned against the cento-billionaire, and Oceano shelved its request. Maybe a port like Monaco would be more accommodating?

Also not on this list is the world’s largest private yacht, reportedly owned by Alisher Usmanov. Though size and cost typically scale in the world of superyachts, this is not always the case (see #1 in this list.) Also, Somnio, the 728-feet dream-monikered yacht liner that tops our list of the world’s largest private yachts , isn’t quite done being constructed. And it is not, like most of the largest superyachts, privately owned by one individual or family—it’s a kind of floating condo, with 39 eight-figure homes available to potential owners solely by invitation.

Election latest: Multiple Conservative candidates 'facing investigation by gambling watchdog'

Multiple Conservative Party candidates are facing an investigation from the Gambling Commission, the party has said. And Housing Secretary Michael Gove will be reacting to the dire polling on Sky News.

Even the world of escapism can't escape politics.

Decisions made on the green benches of parliament could be life or death for the circus. Like many businesses, it is walking the wire between rising costs and cash-strapped audiences.

As part of our Bench Across Britain series we visited a circus tent in south Leicestershire where punters try to forget the world for an hour or so - only to be confronted by Sky News, asking them about the general election.

First, we spoke to the performers: high wire walker Ksenia Archer literally dropped in on our bench while still attached to her safety harness.

"Our costs have gone up miles high," she said.

"Unfortunately, our customers' costs have gone up as well. We've not been able to increase ticket prices - they have had to go down, to ensure we get any customers at all."

She added: "The circus was invented in England - it's over 250 years old. But unless we get support we will be slowly dying out."

Read Jason's full story below:

Michael Gove, who is speaking to Sky News, is asked about the series of polls yesterday that all forecast a Tory wipe-out.

Mr Gove says they do not make "cheery reading" for his party - but insists it can turn it around.

"The opinion polls, as I acknowledged and as we both know, they're not great," he says.

"But it's not the 90th minute, you know, we're not in Fergie time yet.

"So there is still an opportunity."

Asked about reports Boris Johnson might make a return to try and be Conservative Party leader at the 2029 election, Mr Gove says this is "so far in the future" and he wants "Rishi Sunak to be prime minister".

Michael Gove is speaking to Sky News this morning.

The housing secretary is asked about the potential Gambling Commission investigations into Conservative Party candidates.

Mr Gove says: " know that there are two people who are now subject to this process, I think, from the Gambling Commission."

He adds that a police officer is being subject to a "sort of parallel process".

The minister - who is not standing for reelection - says it is "deeply disturbing" that people may have been betting on the date of an election being called.

But, he say,s it is the "exception rather than the rule".

Mr Gove, however, says he does not want to pre-empt the process by giving a running commentary on it.

We've just been given the date for when Boris Johnson's memoirs from his time in Downing Street will be released.

William Collins Books, part of HarperCollins, says the book will be coming out on 10 October this year.

The Gambling Commission is considering investigating multiple Tory candidates, according to the Conservative Party.

It was reported last week that Craig Williams, an aide of the prime minister, was facing a probe over allegedly gambling on the date of the election.

Rishi Sunak took people by surprise when he called the vote for 4 July.

After reports of a second candidate being looked into by the Gambling Commission over similar claims, a Conservative Party spokesperson said: "We have been contacted by the Gambling Commission about a small number of individuals.

"As the Gambling Commission is an independent body, it wouldn't be proper to comment further, until any process is concluded."

This follows the news yesterday  that one of Mr Sunak's close protection officers was arrested and suspended over alleged bets on the election date.

Welcome back to the Politics Hub.

Yesterday a string of polls, which made damning reading for the government, were published - with some suggesting the Conservative Party could fall below 100 seats.

YouGov's MRP poll, carried out in conjunction with Sky News, shows Labour are on course for a 200-seat majority - with the Tories down to 108.

Housing secretary Michael Gove - who is not standing in the election - will be speaking to Sky News just after 7am.

Shadow housing minister Matthew Pennycook will be on for Labour just after 8am.

Both parties want to talk about housing today - with the Tories saying Labour are not matching their pledges on housebuilding.

The Opposition has attacked the government over their record on mortgage rates.

Thank you for following our coverage of the day's political events.

See our 10pm bulletin for the key points from today.

Join us again tomorrow from 7am for the latest updates.

Earlier, YouGov pollsters asked 2,238 people how they felt about various party leaders - and who would make the prime minister.

In a series of head to heads, Sir Keir Starmer came ahead of all the other leaders.

He beat Rishi Sunak by 41 points to 21 points, Nigel Farage by 50 points to 25, and Sir Ed Davey by 40 points to 14.

The rest of the 100% in each case was made up by "don't knows".

Out of the other match-ups, Mr Farage came second in them all - and Mr Sunak lost out to Sir Ed.

The grim news for the Tories in the latest Sky News/YouGov poll begs another question about Rishi Sunak's political judgement. Was a long election campaign a blunder?

The prime minister is already under fire from Conservative MPs and activists for gambling on an election in July rather than waiting for October or November.

The conventional wisdom was that economic news would be better by the autumn and deportation flights to Rwanda would help stop the boats bringing migrants across the Channel.

But as well as doubts about a July poll, the big slump in Tory support since the last Sky News/YouGov poll on 3 June, suggests a long campaign of six weeks may also have backfired.

On 22 May, the day the prime minister made his shock general election announcement, some veteran Tory MPs privately questioned Mr Sunak's decision to fight a long campaign.

But with the Tories trailing badly behind Labour in the polls for months, Mr Sunak clearly hoped a long election campaign would give his party more time to recover and close the gap.

However, the opposite appears to have happened. As the campaign continues, with polling day still two weeks away, opinion polls are suggesting bigger Conservative losses, not smaller.

It's 10pm and here's your rundown of the day.

It's been a day of manifesto launches and another YouGov poll for Sky News has projected Labour is on course for its best-ever election result - and the Tories set for their worst since 1906.

Here are the main things you need to know:

  • The poll projects Labour will win a historic majority of 200 with 425 seats, more than double the 202 won in 2019;
  • While the Tories would slump to their lowest number of parliamentary seats since the party's formation with 108, down from the 365 won in 2019;
  • Some 15 out of 28 Tory cabinet members still standing in the election are projected to lose , including Chancellor Jeremy Hunt, Defence Secretary Grant Shapps, and Commons leader Penny Mordaunt.
  • The Liberal Democrats would win 67 seats under the projection, the SNP 20, Plaid Cymru four and the Greens two;
  • Nigel Farage's Reform UK is on course to win five seats, with the party leader becoming an MP for the first time after winning Clacton;
  • History teaches us polls tend to narrow during election campaigns, but Patrick English, director of political analytics at YouGov, says "we're just not seeing that at the moment" .
  • A police officer in Rishi Sunak's close protection team has been arrested and suspended over alleged bets about the timing of the general election.
  • We had an in-depth interview with Lib Dem leader Sir Ed Davey , who discussed topics taking in migration, Brexit and social care, and his experience looking after his son;
  • The SNP's economy spokesperson also told Sophy Ridge the party is "fighting for every vote" in response to the YouGov projection showing the party would lose half of its seats;
  • The  SNP launched its manifesto  with a promise to continue its quest for another independence referendum, which the party claims could pave the way for Scotland to rejoin the EU;
  • Sinn Fein launched its manifesto, as did George Galloway's Workers Party of Britain .
  • Inflation falling back to the Bank of England's 2% target for the first time in three years has been welcomed by Rishi Sunak , but Sir Keir Starmer said people's lives wouldn't "suddenly get easier;
  • The prime minister and Labour leader condemned Just Stop Oil members spraying Stonehenge with orange paint;
  • Sir Keir's wife also said a protest outside their house - which involved a banner saying "Starmer stop the killing" in reference to the war in Gaza - made her feel "a bit sick".

On today's Sky News Daily podcast, Niall Paterson analyses the implications of today’s poll with our deputy political editor Sam Coates , while Sky’s political correspondent Tamara Cohen joins us from Edinburgh where she was at the launch of the SNP manifesto.
