What becomes of a sanctioned Russian billionaire’s superyacht after it’s seized ? In the case of the $75 million Axioma , the end result was an auction for way below its market value.
The lavish 236-footer, which was seized from Russian steel magnate Dmitry Pumpyansky in March, attracted 63 bids at a sale in Gibraltar. A true watershed moment, it is the first public auction of an oligarch’s asset since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February.

The superyacht, which boasts six luxurious guest cabins, an infinity pool, a spa and a 3-D cinema, was detained by the Gibraltar government after a legal claim from JP Morgan said Pumpyansky’s holding company Pyrene Investments owed the bank more than $20 million.
The Office of the Admiralty Marshal in Gibraltar confirmed on Tuesday that 63 bids were received for Axioma , but refused to reveal the value of the bids, as reported by the Guardian .

“The successful bidder will be selected by the Admiralty Marshal but details of the bidder and the value of the offer will remain confidential,” the court said in a statement. “Details about the sale value of the vessel will be made available once the transaction has been completed which could take place in approximately 10 to 14 days.”
James Jaffa, a lawyer for British firm Jaffa & Co, told the Guardian that he expects Axioma to sell for “way below” $20 million.
The west has confiscated billions worth of assets since March. British and American authorities have previously said they would seek to funnel the proceeds of sold assets back into Ukraine. This auction has attracted controversy, though, because Axioma has been sold not for the benefit of the Ukrainian people, but for the US investment bank.
Still, the has set a “benchmark” for other banks looking to recoup losses by auctioning assets.
“ Axioma will be a watershed moment for assets that have bank financing against them because all the other banks will realize that the asset can be sold and that they can get some or all of their money back,” Jaffa adds.

$4 Billion Worth of Seized Russian-Owned Superyachts: This Is What That Looks Like
Following the February 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine, a string of wow-worthy superyachts has been seized from Russian oligarchs allegedly associated with Vladimir Putin.
Take a look at these massive superyachts that have already been seized by local authorities earlier this year. All the vessels on this list are over 200 feet long, with the largest measuring in at over 500 feet! Their values range from $75 million all the way up to $750 million…that’s billions of dollars worth of superyachts, coming right up.
512’ Lürssen | DILBAR
Russian billionaire Alisher Usmanov’s colossal 512-foot superyacht looks more like a cruise ship. DILBAR was seized in Germany on March 2, 2022 by the German government.
The Lürssen yacht was valued somewhere between $600-$750 million–talk about a hefty loss.
469’ Nobiskrug | SAILING YACHT A
The largest “sailboat” in the world, SAILING YACHT A (aptly named) had a similar fate.
It was seized in Italy from owner Andrey Melnichenko. The 469-foot Nobiskrug sailing yacht was valued at $577 million.
459’ Lürssen | SCHEHERAZADE
459-foot SCHEHERAZADE (say that three times fast) was seized in Italy in May. Since one helicopter landing pad isn’t enough, the Lürssen superyacht has two.
Valued at a cool $700 million, she was reportedly owned by former energy exec Eduard Khudainatov.
443’ Lürssen | CRESCENT
Another executive (this time of a Russian oil company), Igor Sechin had his 443-foot Lürssen megayacht seized in March in Spain. The seizure of CRESCENT made for one oily situation.
This massive piece of machinery was valued at $700 million, too.
348’ Lürssen | AMADEA
Fiji is a dream destination, but not so much for Suleiman Kerimov. His 348-foot Lürssen superyacht AMADEA was seized by local authorities in May 2022.
With an estimated $300 million value, that was one pricey visit to the island country.
304’ Feadship | ROYAL ROMANCE
The 304-foot Feadship superyacht linked to Viktor Medvedchuk was recently dethroned. ROYAL ROMANCE lost some of her royalty and a lot of her romance when she was seized in Croatia this past March.
Her highness was valued at $200 million.
282’ Oceano | AMORE VERO
2022 was not Igor Sechin’s year, with not one but two of his yachts on this list. The Russian billionaire’s 282-foot Oceano yacht was also seized earlier this year in France.
AMORE VERO is worth $120 million, adding just a bit to his total losses.
279’ Lürssen | VALERIE
A 279-foot Lürssen yacht was seized in Spain in March 2022. The impressive vessel was linked to Russian executive Sergei Chemezov.
VALERIE was valued at $140 million
255’ Feadship | TANGO
255-foot TANGO met her match when she, too, was seized in Spain in April. The Feadship yacht was tied to Russian oligarch Viktor Vekselberg.
This dancing queen was valued at $90 million.
236’ Dunya | AXIOMA
Gibraltar was the location of the seizure of AXIOMA, a stunning 236-foot Dunya yacht. The vessel was linked to Russian “businessman” Dmitry Pumpyansky.
Her value was estimated to be $75 million.
The string of spectacular superyachts seized from Russian oligarchs is a long one. Billions of dollars worth of these beauties have been taken since the Russian invasion of Ukraine earlier this year.

How a Russian oligarch’s $90 million megayacht landed in U.S. custody
Scroll to continue
Over the past 20 years, the use of economic sanctions has exploded. The United States now targets more than 15,000 individuals, businesses and governments, imposing penalties that affect roughly one-third of all nations on Earth.
But how do sanctions work? Let’s follow the path of one Russian yacht to its seizure in Mallorca.
A sanctions program starts when the president determines there is a threat to the U.S. economy, foreign policy or national security — in this case, Russia’s 2014 invasion of Ukraine, seizure of Crimea and other activities abroad. White House aides then direct the Treasury Department to start looking for targets connected to that threat. With Russia, potential targets included billionaires accused of benefiting from the regime of Russian President Vladimir Putin.
Among those billionaires was Viktor Vekselberg, a Russian magnate with assets all over the world. Soon after the invasion of Crimea, U.S. officials ramped up their investigation into Vekselberg, according to a person familiar with the matter, who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the government process.
Vekselberg’s assets included Fabergé eggs in London ...
... high-rise apartments in New York City ...
... and the Tango,
a $90 million, 255-foot superyacht equipped with a sky lounge, sun deck, “contra-flow pool” and outdoor cinema, among other amenities, according to media reports, yacht brokerage firms and Justice Department documents.
Why Vekselberg? Treasury later said it targeted the billionaire “for operating in the energy sector” of the Russian economy.
Treasury argued that Vekselberg and other members of the Russian financial elite should not escape “the consequences of their government’s destabilizing activities.” The U.S. has assumed broad authority to issue sanctions for a range of behaviors, trying to cast a wide net around what officials see as rogue regimes.
Vekselberg denied wrongdoing in a 2019 interview with the Financial Times and said he had resettled his family in the United States.
Once the decision has been made to impose sanctions, Treasury adds the target’s name to a public government database, known as the list of “Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons.” They did this with Vekselberg in April 2018.
Americans are legally prohibited from doing business with anyone on this list. Foreigners also can be charged with a crime or held liable by the United States if they do business with anyone on the list. This is what it means to be “sanctioned” — you get cut off by anyone who needs continued access to the vast global financial systems connected to the United States. The penalty can be applied not just to oligarchs, but foreign officials, banks and even government institutions.
Being on the list can create huge problems, even for a billionaire like Vekselberg. It’s difficult to move money and assets around the world without touching the U.S. financial system.
Banks in Europe generally will refuse to open an account for someone on the list. Vekselberg, for instance, probably can’t withdraw or remove funds on deposit with Western banks. (He technically still owns the money, but it is now considered “frozen.”)
Art galleries that work with Americans are likely to stop exhibiting his Fabergé eggs, because they won’t want to risk appearing to do business with a sanctioned person, said Adam M. Smith, a senior sanctions official in the Obama administration who is now at the law firm Gibson Dunn.
And if he wants something for his megayacht, he will have to figure out how to buy it without violating the sanctions rules. He cannot pay a marina, an insurance company or even a cleaning crew if the money has to move through banks tied to the United States.
Sanctioned targets sometimes try to evade the law by disguising their identities so trading partners continue to do business with them. Federal prosecutors say Vekselberg’s surrogates tried to hide the fact that they were working for him.
One longtime associate in Switzerland was accused of ordering embroidered robes and internet services for an imaginary megayacht named “Fanta” when he was really placing the order for the Tango. (The associate has denied the allegations.)
The U.S. government has been trying to crack down on this kind of sanctions evasion. And it’s hard to hide a 255-foot megayacht.
U.S. officials found that Vekselberg associates used U.S. banks to pay for maintenance of the Tango, including for a stay at a luxury water-villa resort in the Maldives in December 2020, according to an April 2022 news release .
The discovery allowed the Justice Department to link the yacht to alleged criminal activity and obtain a warrant to seize it. Prosecutors accused Vekselberg’s associates of violating the sanctions by carrying out transactions involving the U.S. dollar. A Vekselberg spokesman did not respond to a request for comment about the charges.
In April 2022, Spanish authorities and FBI agents took possession of the Tango in Palma de Mallorca.
It’s not clear that the seizure of the Tango has done much to disrupt Putin’s war aims. But the impoundment — and hundreds of other sanctions imposed since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2014 and 2022 — have made life much more difficult for Russian elites like Vekselberg.
The Money War
The U.S. government is putting more sanctions on foreign governments, companies and people than ever. But these powerful tools of economic warfare can have unintended consequences , hurting civilian populations and undermining U.S. foreign policy interests. The Money War investigates the proliferation of U.S. financial sanctions and the dangers of overuse.

Russian oligarch's yacht costs U.S. taxpayers close to $1 million a month
A mega-yacht seized by U.S. authorities from a Russian oligarch is costing the government nearly $1 million a month to maintain, according to new court filings.
The U.S. Department of Justice is seeking permission to sell a 348-foot yacht called Amadea, which it seized in 2022, alleging that it was owned by sanctioned Russian billionaire Suleiman Kerimov. The government said it wants to sell the $230 million yacht due to the “excessive costs” of maintenance and crew, which it said could total $922,000 a month.
“It is excessive for taxpayers to pay nearly a million dollars per month to maintain the Amadea when these expenses could be reduced to zero through [a] sale,” according to a court filing by U.S. prosecutors on Friday.
The monthly charges for Amadea, which is now docked in San Diego, California, include $600,000 per month in running costs: $360,000 for the crew; $75,000 for fuel; and $165,000 for maintenance, waste removal, food and other expenses. They also include $144,000 in monthly pro-rata insurance costs and special charges including dry-docking fees, at $178,000, bringing the total to $922,000, according to the filings.
The battle over Amadea and the costs to the government highlight the financial and legal challenges of seizing and selling assets owned by Russian oligarchs after the country’s invasion of Ukraine. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen said last week that the European Union should use profits from more than $200 billion of frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s war effort.
Her comments echoed government calls in the spring of 2022 to freeze the yachts, private jets and mansions of Russian billionaires in hopes of putting pressure on Russian President Vladimir Putin and raising money for the war effort.
Yet, nearly two years later, the legal process for proving ownership of the Russian assets and selling them has proven to be far more time-consuming and costly. In London, Russian billionaire Eugene Shvidler has waged a court battle over his private jets that were impounded, and Sergei Naumenko has been appealing the detention of his superyacht Phi.
The battle over Amadea began in April 2022, when it was seized in Fiji at the request of the U.S. government, according to the court filings.
Though the U.S. alleges that the yacht is owned by Kerimov, who made his fortune in mining, attorneys for Eduard Khudainatov, an ex-Rosneft CEO who has not been sanctioned, say he owns the yacht, and have sought to take back possession of the vessel.
In court filings, Khudainatov’s attorneys have objected to the U.S. government’s efforts to sell the yacht, saying a rushed sale could lead to a distressed sale price and that the maintenance costs are minor relative to the potential sale value.
Khudainatov’s attorneys refuse to pay the ongoing maintenance costs as long as the government pursues a sale and forfeiture. However, they say their client will reimburse the U.S. government for the more than $20 million already spent to maintain the yacht if it’s returned to its proper owner.
In court papers, the government says Kerimov disguised his ownership of Amadea through a series of shell companies and other owners. They say emails between crew members show Kerimov “was the beneficial owner of the yacht, irrespective of the titleholder of the vessel.”
The emails show that Kerimov and his family ordered several interior improvements of the yacht, including a new pizza oven and spa, and that between 2021 and 2022, when the boat was seized, “there were no guest trips on the Amadea that did not include either Kerimov or his family members,” according to the court filings.
The government also says Kerimov has been trying to sell Amadea for years, so a sale would be in keeping with his intent.
“This is not a situation in which a court would be ordering sale of a precious heirloom that a claimant desperately wishes to keep for sentimental reasons,” the government said in filings.
Even if Amadea were sold quickly, the proceeds wouldn’t automatically go to the government. Under law, the money would be held while Khudainatov and the government continue their battle in court over the ownership and forfeiture.
