Set sail with safety bay yacht club.

If you’re looking to make 2023 a brilliant year and would like to be part of an exciting and welcoming community, then joining the Safety Bay Yacht Club should be top of the list, especially if you’re into or would like to learn a water sport such as sailing, wind surfing, kiteboarding or foiling. SBYC provides endless opportunities to get out on the water, improve skills, meet new people and of course, enjoy spectacular views from the club house located on Safety Bay Foreshore. Celebrating their 75th anniversary this year, SBYC is one of the longest standing clubs in Rockingham. The club volunteers have worked super hard to make SBYC epic and have planned many exciting events through the season, which typically runs from November to March.

There’s something for everyone with membership benefits including access to club house facilities, discounted event entry prices, access to club dinghies, Friday evening social events, school holiday activities and skipper’s ticket, and marine radio courses through ‘Go Sailing’. SBYC runs three kids sailing course (for different ages), where kids will learn the fundamentals of sailing including parts of the boat, steering and wind reading. The most recent course included a fun treasure hunt around the pond.

One of the highlight events is the upcoming ‘Boss of the Bay’, happening on 28 January 2023 (wind dependant). In this race, participants will sail, kite, windsurf, or foil their way through the course from Port Kennedy to Penguin Island, finishing in Safety Bay; the fastest rider takes the prize. Boss of the Bay makes up one of three major events in the WA kite down winder series, and count towards the sought after ‘Best in the West’ title. The Boss of the Bay event conveniently coincides with the SBYC 75 th Anniversary. After the race many celebrations will take place as we look back at events over the last 75 years and get excited for what’s still to come!

Other exciting events include the Twin Tip and windsurf slalom series consisting of seven rounds. Sign up on the day to join in the action. Next race kicks off Sunday 12 th February 2023. Keep an eye out for other spontaneous fun filled events that pop up throughout the season.

If water sports aren’t your thing or you prefer a more casual membership, consider joining as a social member to enjoy the ocean front dwelling to relax, have a drink and meet new people. Laura, the SBYC Commodore describes the club as open, friendly, and laid back – that’s exactly what you will feel when you walk in. Laura would love nothing more than for the Rockingham community to be part of the SBYC community. Nothing beats a day on the water with friends and having a place to go to share the stoke and the stories, making those days even better!

A special shout out goes to Andy and Ali Byne, these amazing SBYC volunteers recently won the ‘Australian Sailing Volunteer of the Year WA’ award and were in the final three to receive the national award.

Why not check out WA surf shop located underneath SBYC for all your water sport’s needs. The friendly staff will help you chose the most suitable gear for your chosen sport. Lesson packages available.

If you’re in the area and feeling peckish, pop into one of the following local café/restaurants;

  • Azacca Kitchen – Enjoy a craft beer and some tasty share snacks in the beer garden.
