A few words from some of our happy customers

The Ackinclose Family

This was the holiday of a lifetime. When we returned, we immediately got off the boat and walked straight into the office to book again for the following year.

We had an absolute blast. And really the boat was the centre piece of that. It was everything we could have asked for; spacious, luxurious, comfortable, plenty of water storage and fridge/freezer space, room to spread out, great cooking facilities, plenty of lounging areas and a hot shower and comfy bed at the end of every day.

Perhaps most importantly it allowed us to ‘choose our own adventure’! This holiday had it all…. turquoise waters, swimming, snorkeling, fishing, isolated beaches, white sand, incredible walks, beach combing, whales, dolphins, turtles, tropical fish, and some high sea adventures! It’s one thing to visit the Whitsundays, it’s another altogether to holiday ON the Whitsundays. Being on the water 24/7 is an experience unlike any other… it was pure joy!

We loved being on our own (the perfect covid safe holiday really!), enjoying each others company and everyday being an adventure. Not to mention relaxing and unwinding with the most amazing scenery and sunsets. This is a holiday you and your children will remember forever!

Billy & Friends

Thank you again to the Whitsunday Escape Crew for another amazing experience in the magnificent Whitsundays. We had a wonderful 10 days onboard the Seawind 1260 Volare, which kicked off with a great brief by Amee who was very thorough and very knowledgeable about operating Volare safely.

Throughout the charter the support from the ops team is first rate. Whether you want to know where the best place to overnight for the conditions, or if you need some advice about the boat, they will always go the extra mile to ensure you have the best holiday possible. Shoutout to Jordans mobile outboard repairs that paid us a quick visit in Stonehaven to help sort us out.

The absolute highlight for this trip was the time we had all of Whitehaven Beach entirely to ourselves for a few hours on a sunny afternoon. A magical moment that is unlikely to be repeated.

We’re already booked in for our next charter with Whitsunday Escape over Christmas and can’t wait to get back up there.

The Patel Family

We were first time ‘bare boaters’ and a little nervous about going out to sea in a million-dollar catamaran but Whitsunday Escape couldn’t have been more helpful providing boating information and ensuring we had the prerequisite knowledge.

Big thanks to Lachy for his ‘pep talk’ to my crew before we set off.

Best family holiday ever and we loved every minute.

Thinking of sailing?

Sailing a catamaran.

Sailing a catamaran offers a wide range of benefits, making it a popular choice among sailors and boating enthusiasts. Some of the key advantages include:

Stability: Catamarans have two hulls, which provide greater stability compared to monohull boats. This stability is especially beneficial in rough seas, making catamarans less prone to rolling and capsizing.

Speed: Catamarans are generally faster than monohulls of similar size due to their reduced water resistance and lighter weight. Their twin hulls allow them to glide smoothly through the water, making them an ideal choice for those who enjoy faster sailing.

Shallow draft: Catamarans typically have a shallower draft than monohulls, which allows them to access shallow waters and anchor closer to shore. This makes exploring shallow coves, beaches, and remote areas more accessible.

Comfort: The spacious design of catamarans provides ample deck space, allowing for more room to move around, relax, and entertain guests. The absence of heeling (tilting) in a catamaran also contributes to a more comfortable and enjoyable sailing experience.

Reduced heeling: Unlike monohull boats, catamarans do not heel over significantly under sail. This reduces the risk of spills and makes it easier to move around the boat, even while underway.

Low fuel consumption: Catamarans' efficient hull design and reduced drag often result in lower fuel consumption compared to monohull boats of similar size, making them more environmentally friendly and cost-effective in the long run.

Safety: The inherent stability of catamarans makes them a safer option for inexperienced sailors and families. Their twin hulls and generally shallower draft provide added peace of mind when exploring unfamiliar waters.

Better visibility: Catamarans typically have a higher vantage point on the deck, offering better visibility for the captain and crew. This improved sightline helps identify potential hazards and makes navigation easier.

Versatility: Catamarans are versatile vessels that can be used for various activities, such as cruising, racing, day sailing, fishing, and even chartering. Their adaptability makes them suitable for a wide range of sailing preferences.

Roomy cabins: Catamarans often have spacious cabins with large windows, offering panoramic views of the surrounding waters. This enhances the overall comfort and living experience while spending extended periods onboard.

Reduced motion sickness: Due to their stable design and minimal heeling, catamarans are less likely to induce motion sickness in passengers, making them a more comfortable option for those prone to seasickness.

Overall, sailing a catamaran provides a unique and enjoyable experience, combining comfort, stability, speed, and versatility. Whether you're a seasoned sailor or a newcomer to the world of boating, catamarans offer many benefits that can enhance your time on the water.

How Much Is A Yacht Charter In The Whitsundays?

The most popular luxury yacht charters are for smaller groups of around 8-12 people. The price for this size of yacht charter is generally around $8,000 - $9,000, which is the total cost for 3 days.

Whitsunday Rent A Yacht

Skippered & guided charters

Check availability, limited sailing experience let one of our sail travel guides show you the sights of the whitsundays while you find your sea legs. or consider hiring our fully skippered leopard 50 with a host..

When you charter a boat with us, no matter what your experience, you will receive a comprehensive boat and area briefing with a qualified briefer. The briefing will include a thorough introduction to manoeuvring your vessel, its fittings and your cruising area. You will also be offered assistance with planning the ideal itinerary.

If, however, you would like either additional training or a guide for the duration of your charter, we can arrange to add a sail guide to your booking. A sail guide will be able to assist you with learning how to operate your vessel confidently and safely.

Whitsunday Rent a Yacht offers a fully skippered charter service on our Leopard 50, Point of Sail. Our skippered service includes two crew, a Skipper and a Host.

A skippered yacht charter means you are not responsible for running the boat, whereas a sail travel guide is there to assist you and build your boating confidence.

Our host & skippered charter offering

Point of Sail, a Leopard 50 sailing catamaran , is the largest and one of the most high-end vessels in our fleet.

Due to her size and depending on your qualifications, if you want to charter Point of Sail, you may be required to have a skipper and host. Or perhaps you simply want to add a small professional crew so you relax, taking in the stunning Whitsundays onboard a luxurious and remarkable boat.

A skipper’s role is to be fully responsible for operating the boat and safety of those onboard.  They are the person who commands a boat — the captain if you like.

A host is there to ensure guests are looked after and comfortable. They also act as crew support for the skipper.

Your skipper and host onboard Point of Sail can assist in making itinerary decisions based on their extensive local knowledge. They will also allow you to be involved with the ins and outs of operating the boat if you wish.

Like a sail guide, the skipper and the host must be catered for and they each need a private cabin.

If you wish to have a skipper you must also hire a host (regulatory requirement).

A skipper and host on Point of Sail will cost approximately $950 per day of charter (both crew). Please note that this service is subject to availability.

* Price is indicative and subject to change. Cost increases with a public holiday

 Additional Training from your Briefer

Should you wish to organise some additional training, perhaps you have very limited sailing experience, however, would still like to do a self-sail trip, your boat briefer can accompany you for the first few hours of your charter.

We highly recommend first-time charterers spend additional time with their briefer on the first day, to ensure they are confident operating the boat on their own. Speak to our reservations team when making your booking so additional training time can be allocated.

Additional training is $70 per hour – between 1 and 3 hours

Overnight Sail Guide options

Take the pressure off with a sail-guided holiday. Whether you’re a novice wanting to cruise around the Whitsunday Islands or an experienced yachts-person looking for a chance to share the load, having a sail guide on board allows you to enjoy maneuvering your vessel with guidance from an expert.

Our sail guide will be happy to assist you to sail, motor and anchor the vessel while on your charter holiday.  All of our sail guides are qualified and highly experienced. They will be able to recommend anchorages and assist and provide a wealth of local knowledge all while showing you as little or as much as you would like to know about sailing.

You, the skipper, and your crew will still have full responsibility for the vessel , its inventory and all its fittings.

You pay a daily rate on top of your boat charter, so you have absolute flexibility to choose the days that suit you. All you need to do is provide your sail guide with a separate cabin to sleep in and food and drink for each day of your charter.

Overnight sail guide $400.00 per day of charter (subject to availability) * cost increases with a public holiday

Sail Guide FAQ’s

Our friendly, qualified and experienced sail guides are available at any time of the year, providing sailing expertise in a world-class sailing destination. You can organise a sail guide for your entire trip or just a day or two, whichever suits you. Below are some commonly asked questions about the finer details that come up when considering a sail guide and the answers to help you decide what’s right for you.

Can I do any sailing myself?

Depending on your level of sailing experience you can do as much or as little sailing as you like, including taking the wheel. You are the skipper and your sail guide is there to assist in a way that suits you.

We highly recommended adding a sail guide either for half a day or a night if you have minimal boating experience or if it’s been a while since you were at the helm. A sailing guide can also benefit you if you’ve been hoisting your own sails for decades and just want a little help and support with some of the more physical aspects of keeping a yacht moving under sail.

You may have a first mate on board who just prefers sunbathing to pulling ropes, or has too much on their hands keeping crew members (particularly the little ones) occupied!

Please note that sail guides will take pride in the presentation of the yacht, but they are not cooks, cleaners, babysitters or maids.

Where will the sail guide sleep?

Sail guides must be allocated a stern (down the back) cabin to themselves for the duration of your charter, though occasionally the bow (up the front) can be agreed upon. Anything outside of this normal arrangement may be arranged with discretion between you and your sail guide upon check-in. But please assume your sail guide will need a cabin in the stern.

What/How do we feed our Sail Guides?

If you are planning to pre-order all of your food through our recommended provisioning services or to do your own food shop, then remember to buy enough to accommodate the sail guide. Feel free to call our sales team so they can find out if your sail guide has any dietary requirements.

When visiting a resort, you may invite your sail guide to dinner on shore, and they may accept or choose to stay aboard. If there is no food aboard and you would prefer your sail guide not to come with you, then you can provide them with ‘pocket money’ so that they can pop into their favourite local haunt. They’ll only ever be a phone call away should you need them.

What does the sail guide do in the evening?

That’s entirely up to you as every group is different and interacts with people in different ways. Our sail guides are always friendly and professional, and comfortable with meeting new people and adept at reading different social situations.

If you invite your sail guide to be part of the fun in the evening they may accept or choose to decline, opting to stay on the yacht and wait for your return. You may find that your sail guide is an early riser who bunks down early after a long day’s sailing.

Do we have to tip our sail guide?

While it is not compulsory, we do encourage you to tip your sail guide. A guideline amount would be 10% of your yacht charter price, however as this could encompass quite a range, we leave it at your discretion and ask that you offer the gratuity you think your sail guide deserves.

Will the sail guide speak English?

Our sail guides all speak English and are friendly and excellent communicators.

How much value does a sail guide add?

A fully qualified, commercially endorsed and experienced sailor, with tonnes of local knowledge to share with you. Our sail guides can show you the best places to drop anchor, snorkel and dive, swim and sunbake – and the best times to visit popular locations. They can teach you new things about sailing, help you rediscover confidence at the helm, provide an extra pair of hands and handle the heavy lifting for you.

Adrian, one of our sail guides shares:

“When my wife and I go on holidays to new places we seek out the people that can share their knowledge and experiences, giving us a deeper appreciation and understanding of their way of life and the ecosystems that they live in,” Adrian says.

“For our first trek in the Himalayas, we chose to have a guide. When we tour new exotic countries we always have a driver/guide. When you explore the Whitsunday Islands and the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park under sail for the first time, why wouldn’t you have a guide? Oh yeah…and you get to learn how to sail too!”

For total indulgence, a hostess can also be arranged for an additional cost (please note the hostess will also require their separate cabin and to be included in the provisioning).

Sailing the Whitsundays on a Luxury Catamaran “Lucy” – Dec 17 featured

' src=

If you have never sailed before, fear not! This is something you must try at least once in a lifetime. I can guarantee that you will love it. Almost certain that once you are back to civilization you will be googling madly for your first boat! If you have, however, “been there, done that” kind of a person, then the next destination on your list must be the Australian Whitsundays at the Great Barrier Reef.

Sailing the Whitsundays on a Luxury Catamaran “Lucy” – Dec 17

Where are the Whitsundays?

The easiest way to get to Whitsundays if you decided to charter the boat is to fly to Proserpine Airport the day before your booked trip and overnight at Airlie Beach. I recommend staying at the   Mantra Club Croc . It is an inexpensive motel style accommodation but surprisingly has really good dinner menus with some top class cocktails at the bar! Abell Point Marina, where your journey will begin, is only 5 minutes drive from the hotel.

There are plenty of charter options in the Whitsundays from small power boats to large sailing yachts.  Lucy is a Lagoon 420 Sailing Catamaran that you can charter from Portland Roads.  It has a Mainsail which runs up her 60″ mast and a furling Headsail. Accommodation wise, it has 4 double cabins, all with private en-suites and can accommodate 8 people comfortably. The charter is a bare boat, meaning that Portland Roads provide you with a boat and you provide everything else. There are a number of options where you can hire a skipper for the trip and get all the provisioning and catering done for you if you are after a total luxury experience.

We have purchased all our food and supplies at Airlie Beach and brought to the boat ourselves. It is a bit of a hassle and somewhat of a logistical operation. Even if you are not ordering full catering, I recommend you organize for your provisions to be delivered directly to the boat on the day. Just drinks and ice for a week will take you several trips to bring to the boat!

More on Luxury Sailing Catamaran

Lucy is like a luxury floating serviced apartment. She has an outdoor barbecue ( with amazing ever-changing ocean backdrop) and a gas stove inside. All the bed linen, cooking necessities, safety gear and communication equipment is provided on the boat. She has 2 fridges, a freezer, and a giant esky. Just bring food! Lucy also carries 800 liters of water which is enough for 5 days of cruising but don’t expect long showers! There is aircon in all the rooms and main cabin but it works off the generator ( which is loud) so at night enjoy the sea breeze from the windows in your rooms.

Whitsundays Sailing Experience

Where you actually go will largely depend on the weather and an agreement with your sail guide during early morning phone calls (known as SKEDS). There are 74 islands in the Whitsundays, you will not visit them all in 1 trip. A book called 100 Magic Miles ( provided on the boat) will become your best friend. Study the map and read about the islands you want to visit. The book will provide all necessary information about the moorings, anchoring points, snorkeling and fishing spots.

If you up to a long day of sailing try to visit Whitehaven Beach on the eastern side of Whitsundays Island which is rated as one of the World’s Top 10 beaches.

For those that have never sailed before, I highly recommend booking a training session for the first day with your sail guide. This would be the best $150 dollars you ever spent. He will take you out of the harbor, show how to put up the sails and bring them down as well as how to pick up a mooring ( trust me, its a skill) and operate the anchor, as well as some basic skills for tacking and jibing.

Luxury Sailing

Luxury Sailing

You will find that at a short distance between the islands it will be faster and easier to just motor power the boat but on the long stretches of sea, it is an amazing experience to travel at sail. Learn the map and the tidal schedule but mostly listen to your sail guide. He will point out the best locations and best ways to get there based on the daily wind, currents and weather conditions. If you mostly use the Sails for your travel your fuel costs will be minimum. We used sails 30% of the time and fuel cost over 5 days was still only $260 dollars.

Mooring and Anchoring

Picking up moorings was the least favorite activity for me on the whole trip. It eventuated in a lot of bruises and scratches as well as a loss of a boat hook (twice) and subsequent chasing of it in the tender boat around the bay (by the husband with a lot of complaining).

Moorings are marked on the map and typically there are several of them of different sizes next to each island (suitable for different boat sizes). The trick is to pick the floating rope (attached to the buoy) with the boat hook, lift it up, pull it over the bow roller until you can hook it to the bollard on the deck. The problem is that the rope is thick and heavy and the boat is moving to/from the mooring in the wind. Moorings can cause a major damage to propellers if the rope wraps around them. So whilst pulling the heavy rope you need to communicate its whereabouts to the skipper driving the boat for him to maneuver around it. That’s pretty hard in the wind and often a lot of screaming is involved.

Also, there is a 2 hour limit in the Whitsundays for you to stay on the mooring with the exception of night time.

Then there is a swinging problem. Your catamaran will be moving around the mooring as far the rope permits. Once the mooring ball swings to the side of the boat it will be hitting it with a loud “bang” until the boat swings the other way. At night, this is not a lot of fun.

As a result, I highly recommend using an anchor instead, where you can. You can operate it with your foot without scratching off your pedicure. Anchoring points are also marked on the map but they are not available everywhere. Make sure you plan ahead. The advantage of an anchor is that you can also attach a rope to the chain that is attached to both hulls of the catamaran (bridle) to stop it from swinging.

Sailing Whitsundays

Snorkelling and Fish Watching!

We found that the best snorkeling was around Butterfly Bay and Langford Island.  In both places, you can take your tender to shore and snorkel off the beach. You will see some incredible corals of all shapes, sizes, and colors as well as some pretty amazing bright fish. At Langford Island as well as near the Black Island you will also most likely be sharing your swimming space with some inquisitive turtles. If underwater photography is your thing, this is the place to be. Be mindful of the current and the wind, particularly around Black Island. When on the boat, get entertained by giant fish that circle you and eat biscuits on your hands. Apparently totally normal at the Whitsundays!

Snorkelling Whitsundays

What to bring

You will be doing a lot of snorkeling along the Great Barrier Reef. It is beautiful and you will not get enough of it! You can snorkel directly of the tender wearing full snorkeling gear. However, if you have kids, most likely, you will get to shore first and then snorkel towards the reef. I highly recommend reef shoes as oyster shells and corals are so sharp they will cut and slice your feet in seconds.

All the snorkeling gear and reef shoes as well as “stinger” suits you can hire at Aqua Dive at the Adell Point Marina before the trip. Stinger suits are a must and you will be reminded several times to make sure you have them. Marine stingers may be present in the waters of tropical Queensland year round, with the higher risk season during October – May.

If you are into finishing, hire all the gear at  Aqua Dive  as well. You will do some phenomenal finishing around the Whitsundays.

If motion sickness is something you are afraid of then stock up on some tablets. I recommend Kwells. I was taking them twice a day ( I get very sick normally) and had no issues whatsoever even in rough sea.

Other than that, bring some shorts and teeshirts. You will spend 5 days with no shoes, no hair dryer, and no makeup!

Yacht Charter Greece – The Aegean Yachting offers a wide range of sailing yachts, motor yachts, and catamarans in some of the most beautiful destinations in Greece .  A brand of Nikolas Yachting Ltd. , Aegean Yachting provides affordable yacht charters in Greece and the Greek islands . You can explore the Greek islands with a sailing or motor yacht, bare-boat or with a skipper for the vacation of a lifetime. The Greek peninsula is at the far south east of Europe is made up of the mainland (Attica, Peloponnese, Central Greece, Thessaly, Epirus, Macedonia and Thrace) and the islands in the Aegean and Ionian Seas. The area has a population of about 10 million.

Athens , the capital and largest city of Greece: The name of Greece’s capital derives from the name of the Goddess of wisdom and intelligence, Athena. This unique city is where democracy first saw the light of day, and where the Parthenon, the gem of architecture, was built.

Yacht charter bases in Greece – Greek islands:

Greece has an extremely large number of islands – 6,000-odd islands and islets scattered in the Aegean and Ionian Seas, of which only 227 islands are inhabited. Most of the islands are found in the Aegean Sea and are divided into many groups:

Sporades Islands: Pine-clad, picturesque, and hilly islands with some of Greece’s most beautiful beaches — Alonnisos , Skiathos , Skopelos , and Skyros .

Dodecanese Islands  ( Yacht Charter in Dodecanese, Greece ) – This group of islands has some of the most cosmopolitan and tranquil of the Greek Islands – 15 larger and about 150 smaller Greek islands — Astypalaia , Agathonisi , Alimia, Arkoi, Chalki, Farmakonisi, Gyali, Kalymnos , Karpathos , Kasos , Kastellorizo , Kinaros, Kos , Lipsi , Leipsoi, Leros , Levitha, Marathos, Nisyros , Nimos , Patmos , Pserimos , Rhodes , Symi , Saria, Strongyli, Syrna, Telendos , and Tilos .

Cyclades Islands  (Yacht Charter in Cyclades, Greece), situated in the heart of Aegean Sea, Cyclades is one of the most popular yacht charter destination in Greece.

This group of islands is made up of 56 islands of various sizes, with the most important being Amorgos, Anafi, Andros, Antiparos, Delos, Ios, Kea, Kimolos, Kythnos, Milos, Mykonos, Naxos, Paros, Santorini, Serifos, Sikinos, Sifnos, Syros, Tinos, Folegandros, as well as the “Minor Cyclades” comprising Donousa, Irakleia, Koufonisia and Schinousa.

Saronic Islands  also known as  Gulf of Aegina   (Yacht Charter in Saronic Gulf, Greece), easily accessible from Athens or Poros, excellent for bareboat yacht charters or flotillas alike.

This area is also ideal for beginners with steady predictable afternoon breezes – the islands of Aegina/Aegena, Salamina/Salamis, Poros, Patroklos, Fleves, Angistri,  Methana, Spetses, and Hydra.

Ionian Islands  ( Yacht Charter in Ionian, Greece )  – The Ionian Sea is an ideal yacht charter destination and somewhat more peaceful than the Aegean.

The lush green beauty of the Ionian Islands offer gentle sailing from bases in Corfu and Lefkas makes this a family friendly yacht charter area in Greece – lying just off the West coast of Greece, Ionian islands resemble a necklace, and include Paxos and Antipaxos, Corfu, Levkas, Kefalonia, Ithaca and Zakinthos.

Chinese sailor Guo Chuan plans to set a record through the North East Passage – in a giant trimaran

  • Elaine Bunting
  • April 7, 2015

Chinese sailor Guo Chuan is planning to go through the North East Passage in the 97ft trimaran that Francis Joyon sailed round the world

Guo Chuan trimaran Qingdao

What’s the ideal yacht for attempting to set a record transiting the North East Passage?

You might think a steel yacht, or aluminium perhaps, something that resists crushing by ice, a sturdy craft equipped sensibly, if not beautifully, with a pilothouse or other shelter on deck.

You mightn’t think: the best yacht would be a round the world racing trimaran.

But Chinese sailor Guo Chuan did. He has just bought has bought Francis Joyon’s 97ft trimaran IDEC. Surprisingly, he didn’t buy it to better Joyon’s lone round the world record – or at least not for now – but to set a record, the first officially recognised speed record, for going through the North East Passage.

Guo Chuan and Francis Joyon

Guo Chuan and Francis Joyon

Guo Chuan, former Volvo Ocean Race crew and the first from his country to sail solo round the world, took over the Nigel Irens-designed trimaran in La Trinité sur Mer last month and will train with Joyon throughout April before renaming the yacht Qingdao.

The project follows nearly two years’ research on the feasibility of attempting the North East Passage from Murmansk to Providenya. The World Speed Sailing Record Council has agreed to adjudicate on the first attempt of this world record challenge, skippered by Guo Chuan with an international crew from the UK, France, Norway and Russia.

After attempting to set a North East Passage record, Guo plans to sail along the maritime silk road from China back to Europe. His team says: “Guo has no plan to sail round the world with this boat yet, but we do have plans for the next three years.”

But going through the North East Passage is not guaranteed in one year. The route can often be impeded by ice, with every possibility of having to spent two seasons making the long journey through the Bering Strait. The map below shows the remoteness and length of this most difficult ‘sea voyage’.

Who is Guo Chuan?

Guo, 50, is an aeronautical engineer who got the bug for sailing back in 2000 when he joined friends from the Royal Hong Kong Yacht Club for a day on the water. In 2008 he was picked to be the media crewmember on the Irish-Chinese Volvo Ocean Race entry Green Dragon and in 2012/3 he set a record as the first Chinese person to sail solo round the world, sailing a Class 40.

North East Passage

North East Passage

The North East Passage

The passage from Novaya Zemlya or Franz Josef Land to the Bering Strait was first completed in 1878 by Swedish scientist Nils Adolf Nordenskjöld in the ship Vega.

The first modern yacht to do so was Apostle Andrew, skippered by Nicolai Litau from the Moscow Adventure Club in 1999, who sailed from Murmansk back to St Petersburg.

It is now commonly used by the people of Russia as the shortest water route between Russian ports in Europe and the Far East, and this passage offers a saving of 5,000 miles. It is, however, carefully guarded, and taking a Russian crew is often a precondition of gaining the necessary permissions.
