What used to be a Bed Bath & Beyond in the Dulles Landing shopping center now houses dozens of tiny, locally owned boutiques, with more on the way.

Started in Arkansas in 2015, the Dulles, Virginia, location , which opened this month, is the first Painted Tree Boutiques store in Northern Virginia. A second Loudoun County location, in Sterling, will soon open.

“We like to say it’s the big way to shop small,” said Caylie Barnett, creative director at Painted Tree Marketplace, standing in front of a vendor’s booth, artfully displayed with handmade crafts.

Potential vendors can choose to establish their tiny shops in a variety of sizes, ranging from 6-by-10 feet to 10-by-15 feet. Painted Tree provides the leased space and freshly painted walls.

“We have a handful of very neutral, subtle colors, that are used in all of our spaces,” Barnett said. “So, you have a really nice blank canvas, complete with outlets.”

From there, vendors decorate their own boutique, with guidance and options provided by Painted Tree.

“You’re really able to start your dream shop without the risk and the stress that can often come along with opening your own brick and mortar,” Barnett said.

Many artists aren’t in a position to give up their day jobs to display and try to sell their gifts, decor, fashion, art, jewelry or candles.

“You don’t have to be here all day,” Barnett said. “As the shop owner, you get to determine your own pricing, with your own little description on the paper tag of every single item in your space.”

Similar to an antiques mall, shoppers can browse through several small businesses, all in one place.

“If they see something they like, they can put it in their cart, and at the end, they bring it all to the checkout at the front,” said Barnett, pointing to the cashiers who ring up the purchases based on bar codes placed on each item by the vendor.

Setting up her space under a sign labeled Focal Point and pricing her polymer clay home decor, vendor Shelley Miller said she is “really excited.”

Until now, she had been displaying her work at weekend shows, fairs and galleries.

“This is just so much easier,” Miller said. “I have my stuff in one space. I don’t have to drag my stuff to a show every weekend.”

Walking slowly through the boutique spaces with a friend, one woman said she prefers to shop small.

“Especially if you’re looking for that one special housewarming or hostess gift,” she said. “If you bring something (from here) they’re not going to see it somewhere else, because it’s made by an individual artist, for the most part.”

Roger Federer Just Rocked One of Rolex’s Coolest Sports Watches

Earlier this week, at the New York premiere of his new documentary Federer: Twelve Final Days , tennis icon and Rolex testimonee Roger Federer strapped on the Yacht-Master II ref. 226627—a watch so lightweight that I feared, upon first handling it in Geneva last year, that I might crush it, thus owing Rolex corporate headquarters a check for $14,050 (plus tax).

The ref. 226627 was not Rolex’s first titanium watch—that distinction belongs to the 50mm-wise Deepsea Challenge , which was seemingly designed for James Cameron to wear while plumbing the depths of the Atlantic for sunken ocean liners. The Yacht-Master II, on the other hand, is arguably more exciting: Measuring a more comfortable 42mm wide, it was first spotted on the wrist of skipper (and fellow Rolex testimonee) Sir Ben Aislney back in the fall of 2021. No longer a prototype and now a full production model, it’s crafted from Grade 5 RLX titanium and is available for purchase. ( Theoretically, at least. )

What makes this Submariner-esque watch different from, well, a Submariner ? The two are admittedly similar in design, with a few key differences: There’s the RXL titanium case, of course, but then there’s also the 42mm sizing (as opposed to 41mm on the Sub); a bidirectional timing bezel with a sand-blasted Cerachrom insert (instead of the Sub’s unidirectional dive bezel); the date window (which is only seen on Submariner Date models); and the matching, RLX titanium Oyster bracelet with Oysterlock folding clasp and Easylink comfort extension. (The Sub doesn’t have an available titanium bracelet.)

Other than that, both the Submariner Date and the Yacht-Master II are powered by Rolex’s automatic Calibre 3235 movement with 70 hours of power reserve, and both are made for aquatic use. The Sub, however, is a diver’s watch rated to 300m of water resistance; the Yacht-Master II, on the other hand, is made for sailing and is water resistant to 100m—still respectable, to be sure, but best kept to the deck of a cutting-edge racing craft.

Seeing the Yacht-Master II on Federer’s wrist is more fun than notable—it looks perfectly at home when paired with his dark suit at the photocall, though it's a distinctly sporty piece made to be used and abused. Being a Rolex testimonee, of course, Federer has been spotted in just about every notable Crown offering over the past few years, from the Le Mans Daytona to the Sky-Dweller in precious metals and more. (The man pulls off a dressy 1908 with black tie beautifully, but let’s be real—this is a brand famed for its sport watches, and we’re talking about one of the world’s most renowned athletes.) Having cycled through many of the brand’s most compelling offerings, the only remaining pertinent question is: How do we get Fed into a “Leopard” Daytona ?

Asteroid as big as a YACHT to surge past Earth at 'alarmingly close' proximity

Nasa has warned that a huge asteroid, the size of a 210-foot yacht, is set to pass Earth in just days.

The space rock - named Asteroid 2024 LJ - is expected to travel at a speed of 66,584 miles per hour.

It will surge past Earth on June 22 at a distance of 2.1 million miles.

Astronomers say its journey is particularly notable due to the rock's size and "alarmingly close" proximity to Earth.

However, the 2024 LJ is being observed and does not pose an immediate threat.

Although the phrase "alarmingly close" is subjective given the vastness of space, any sizeable object passing near Earth requires meticulous monitoring.

Scientists at Nasa say they will be closely monitoring 2024 LJ to gain a broader understanding of these celestial wanderers.

The agency’s Planetary Defence Coordination Office (PDCO) aims to locate potentially hazardous asteroids.

Any comets that come within 30 million miles of Earth’s orbit are tracked.

The speed of the space rock is more than 80 times faster than the speed of sound - which travels at about 767 miles per hour.

Astronomers say the asteroid will fly past Earth at a safe distance.

The event will provide a "unique opportunity" for scientists to study the asteroid’s composition, trajectory, and other characteristics.

A recent collision occurred between giant asteroids in the nearby star system Beta Pictoris.

The system, located just 63 light-years from Earth, has long intrigued astronomers because of its proximity and age.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.

The Unique Burial of a Child of Early Scythian Time at the Cemetery of Saryg-Bulun (Tuva)

In 1988, the Tuvan Archaeological Expedition (led by M. E. Kilunovskaya and V. A. Semenov) discovered a unique burial of the early Iron Age at Saryg-Bulun in Central Tuva. There are two burial mounds of the Aldy-Bel culture dated by 7th century BC. Within the barrows, which adjoined one another, forming a figure-of-eight, there were discovered 7 burials, from which a representative collection of artifacts was recovered. Burial 5 was the most unique, it was found in a coffin made of a larch trunk, with a tightly closed lid. Due to the preservative properties of larch and lack of air access, the coffin contained a well-preserved mummy of a child with an accompanying set of grave goods. The interred individual retained the skin on his face and had a leather headdress painted with red pigment and a coat, sewn from jerboa fur. The coat was belted with a leather belt with bronze ornaments and buckles. Besides that, a leather quiver with arrows with the shafts decorated with painted ornaments, fully preserved battle pick and a bow were buried in the coffin. Unexpectedly, the full-genomic analysis, showed that the individual was female. This fact opens a new aspect in the study of the social history of the Scythian society and perhaps brings us back to the myth of the Amazons, discussed by Herodotus. Of course, this discovery is unique in its preservation for the Scythian culture of Tuva and requires careful study and conservation.

Sergei Ryakhovsky (Sergei Vasilyevich Ryakhovsky) a Soviet-Russian serial killer known as the Balashikha Ripper and The Hippopotamus. Ryakhovsky was convicted for the killing of nineteen people in the Moscow area between 1988 and 1993. Ryakhovsky's mainly stabbed or strangulated his victims, he mutilated some bodies, mainly in the genital area. Allegedly Ryakhovsky carried out necrophilic acts on his victims and stole their belongings. Ryakhovsky standing 6’5" tall and weighting 286 pounds, gaining him the nickname, The Hippo. Sergei Ryakhovsky died on January 21st 2005 from untreated tuberculosis while serving his life sentence in prison.
